Title: Foreign Shores Unknown

Author: The_Burberry_Ewok
Timeframe: Legacy Era (WARNING- spoilers for Tempest and Legacy comics)
Characters: Jagged Fel, Jaina Solo, Han and Leia Solo, Admiral Pelleaon, Wedge Antilles, Jacen Solo, etc.
Genre: Drama, Action, Romance
Summary: It was a time of flexible loyalties. Governments rose, governments fell. Friendships were made, and betrayed. It is the story of how a pilot became an Emperor, a Jedi became a Sith, and how a love was born from the ashes.
Disclaimer: All names, places, situations, etc. recognizable belong to others. I am merely playing with the masterpieces of others.
Authors Notes: This is my first bit of fan fiction, so any constructive criticism would be great. This is pretty heavy on speculation and spoilers, so consider yourself warned. Unless my latent omniscience kicked in, this will be AU come February, but hey, it’s all mine until then.

Enjoy!

Prologue

There is a story told on some of the Outer Rim worlds, a story of the favored son of a fallen empire. Aeneas was his name. With a few of his family and friends, all that remained of his once great civilization, he fled Ilium for foreign shores unknown. This weary band of exiles laid anchor for a while in the port of strangers, and might have built their home there, had it not been for the influence of others and the call of something greater. Eventually, they alighted on a shore not unknown, not unclaimed. It was a land split with strife. But Aeneas would not be swayed. He had a mission. He had a future to build. He had a destiny.

Jagged Fel stared out the viewport, arms crossed over his chest. The reflection in the transparisteel showed how the gesture pulled at the rank insignia on his chest, tilting the commander’s bars at a less than square angle. He scowled, but made no effort to correct them. Past his reflection, he strained to see the stars, but height of the mountains surrounding the base blocked all but a few from his view. He stared, idly wondering which systems those pinpoints of light represented. Ultimately, he decided it did not matter. They were probably so concerned with their own petty struggles, they could not care less if the galaxy at large recognized them at all.

Jagged was interrupted from his musings by the sound of a door quietly wooshing open behind him. The noise from the corridor filtered in momentarily, but was quickly silenced as the door closed just as quietly as it had opened. Still, he did not turn around.

“Admiral,” he offered to the viewport, punctuated with a quick nod of his head.

In the reflection, the approaching white uniform of an Imperial Grand Admiral joined the outline of Jagged’s own immaculate gray uniform.

“Commander.” Admiral Pelleaon responded in the same tone. “I trust your trip had no unexpected difficulties?”

Jag finally turned around to face the veteran warrior.

“No, sir. I was able to make contact with the Solo’s and deliver our warning to them without any undue suspicion on their part. They seemed to accept my status as a bitter exile without question.”

His voice grew harder on the words “bitter exile.” The story that he had offered the Solo’s in that cantina on Telkur Station had not been so very far from the truth. He had spent two years marooned on the miserable planet of Tenupe, and his family had finally commissioned their own search party. What he had left out was the fact that the search party had been made of Imperial troops, called in as a personal favor between his father and Admiral Pelleaon. After his rescue, he knew that he could never- and would never want to- return to Chiss service. He accepted a commission under the Admiral, and while he remained in the shadows, his rise through the ranks was nothing short of meteoric.

Jag continued, “I was also able to ascertain their position in the conflict. In true Solo fashion, it seems that they have managed to alienate every governmental entity. However, my sources tell me that they were able to escape the battle at Hapes. Their current whereabouts are unknown, but it is assumed that they will surface somewhere along the Outer Rim.”

He dropped his arms, and with them fell some of the stiff formality he had displayed until that point. “And I am blasted glad to be finished with that beard.”

Admiral Pelleaon chuckled and moved toward the chairs set away from the viewport, motioning the younger man to follow him. He reached the small hard-wood table set between the tapestry-covered chairs and lifted the decanter of Corellian brandy, swirling it gently before pouring two glasses. As he sat down, he quirked an eyebrow, saying, “ I understand that this is your office, but surely you would not begrudge an old man a few comforts.”

Jag lowered himself into the other chair. “Admiral, you are nowhere approaching old and I begrudge you nothing.”

At this the Admiral chuckled. “A diplomat as well as a warrior. I knew I had chosen well.”

Jagged had been sitting fairly relaxed, but at the Admiral’s last words stiffened.

“Sir?” he asked in a neutral tone. He had an idea of where this conversation was heading, but did not want to commit himself to anything until he knew the Admiral’s exact trajectory.

Pelleaon sat his drink down. The formerly congenial glint in his eye faded, and determination shone in its place. He shifted forward.

“We are going to play a game, you and I, a game of hypotheticals. If I were to ask you about the chances of the Corellian separatists in this conflict you would say…” The Admiral trailed off, waiting for an answer.

Jagged thought for a moment, staring into the amber liquid at the bottom of his glass. He lifted his head and responded, without a doubt in his voice, “Poor. They have neither the numbers, the resources, or the apathy to hold the GA for any extended period of time. The GA has a greater number of worlds from which to draw a fighting force. The greatest resource the Corellians can claim is the talent of their commanders. They do not have the manufacturing, armaments, or ship-production for sustained isolation. Finally, most people in the galaxy will support the GA out of apathy. They simply do not care enough to fight with the Corellians.”

“Very good analysis,” the Admiral replied approvingly, “very good. And if I were to ask you the benefits of a new, independent Empire…”
Although Jag had been expecting this, it still took him aback. “Your meeting with the moffs? They approved your plan?” Jag managed to ask.

The Admiral shook his head, leaned back, and ran a finger over his white mustache. “I would hardly call it my plan, young Fel,” he stated. “I seem to remember you being rather instrumental in its development. But yes, the moffs have approved the implementation of the first steps, with one condition.”

Jag frowned. For all of his relative skill in the area of politics and diplomacy, he hated it. “And what condition might that be?” he asked.

Immediately, Jag grew afraid at the slow grin spreading over the Admiral’s face. “Why, they want you in command, of course.”

Seeing how as I'm supposed to be writing a paper, I thought this would be a good time to go ahead and post Chapter 1. Not a whole lot plot wise is happening...I'm just trying to get a handle on the characters and set up what is going to come.

Chapter 1

Han sat in the pilot’s seat of the Millennium Falcon, holding a bacta bandage against his burned hand. Thinking back, grabbing the barrel of a woman desperate enough to actually shoot wasn’t one of his brighter ideas. Granted, it wasn’t bad enough to make the top ten worst decisions he’d ever made, or even the top fifty, but as Leia leaned over with an injector full of pain reliever, he thought that it was surely creeping its way up the list.

“Hold still. This is going to sting,” she said. Without giving him time to respond, she injected him in the arm.

“Yeow!” he cried. “Give a guy some warning, willya?” He leaned back, rubbing his offended arm.

“Han, with as many times as I’ve had to inject you with these, I would think that you’ve had enough warnings for a lifetime. A lifetime that gets shorter every time I have to use another one, I might add.” Leia closed her remarks by capping the injector and throwing it into the medical kit open on the seat behind Han.

“Yeah, and your bedside manner still isn’t any better,” Han mumbled under his breath, turning his attention to the battered console in front of him.

The Falcon had seen better days. Han and Leia were holed up in the cockpit, because, quite frankly, there was no where else to go. The turrets had been destroyed by the fire from the Anakin Solo(Han still couldn’t get over the name). The patches that he and Jaina had put up were holding, but barely. All in all, Han felt it was safer to stay in the only area of the ship not catastrophically damaged. He glanced at the navicomputer and saw that the screen was shot to pieces. Leia noticed the direction of his gaze.

“That’s going to make traveling fun,” she said. “Where are we headed anyway?”

Han glanced at her over his shoulder. “Coruscant,” he replied. “I managed to lock the coordinates in before Little Miss Coup back there went all trigger happy.”

“Coruscant?!” Startled, Leia spun to face Han straight on. “Han, I know that politics isn’t your favorite thing, but even you should realize that we aren’t going to be exactly welcome.”

“We’ll have to make sure they don’t notice we’re there, then, won’t we. Besides, where exactly are we going to be real welcomed right now. Congratulations, Princess, we've once again got the whole galaxy gunning for us.”

Leia could not deny the truth in his words. By offering to help the Corellians, they would no longer be welcomed by the Galactic Alliance, and by extension, the Jedi. By helping Tenel Ka, they had managed to thwart the Corellia's plans. Hapes would not welcome them, though, because of their assumed association with those planning on usurping the throne. After the Swarm War, the Chiss would never welcome them. If only we can find a Star Destroyer to attack somewhere along the way, thought Leia, we will have managed to antagonize every major government in the galaxy.

It was easier, however, to think of their relatively isolated political status than it was to think of their children. While Leia had not been back in the hold while Jaina was aboard- she had been too busy attempting to avoid bolts from turbolasers at that point- she had felt Han's emotions spike. Fear, anger, surprise, regret, overwhelming sorrow- she had felt them all. She wanted to ask him what precisely had occured back there, but a quick brush of Han's emotions told her he was still processing everything. That was not even taking into account the fact that their son had issued warrants for thier arrest and actually fired on them. That discussion would have to come later.

After a while, she spoke. “I’m assuming you have a plan, then,” Leia asked, almost afraid to hear the answer.

“By my standards or yours?” Han replied.

“Right now, I’d take either.”

“Well, by my standards, I’ve got an idea. By your standards, we don’t have a chance in the universe,” Han said through a lopsided grin. “So no worries.”

Leia just glared.

She kept glaring until Han sighed and started to explain. “If everything goes according to plan,” he threw her a pointed look on the word, “then we’ll come out on the far side of the system from Coruscant. Traffic control will notice a ship, but we’ll be runnin’ under a false transponder. Hopefully we won’t be in system long enough for them to do anything but yell at us a little about not wanting to share our life stories. From there, we get Goldenrod back there to tweak the coordinates in the ship’s log a bit, and hightail it to Tatooine. There we dump our resident usurper, and make like we’ve moved on. Only, we stick around and lie low until things kinda calm down.”

“Not bad, flyboy, with one exception: Tatooine? With our history, that’s the last planet we should be choose to ‘lie low’.”

Han jabbed a finger at her, saying, “Precisely. Because we’ve had so much bad luck there, it’s the last place that normal people would think that we’d go. If they’re better than average strategists, they’ll think it is too obvious for us to think about. For the lowlife scum that seem to spontaneously pop up, they’ll think that we couldn’t possibly be stupid enough to meet them on their territory. Any which way you look at it though, people aren’t going to be expecting it.”

“Han,” Leia replied, shaking her head. “That has to be the worst logic I’ve ever heard.”

“Hey, it’s always worked for me before.”

“I know. That’s what scares me.”

Enjoy!

P.S. As this is my first fanfic, any insights and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Since I seem to be procrastinating today, I figured I might as well put up the next installment. As you've probably figured out, this will be updated pretty frequently.

Darth_Dragon: My first reply! Thanks! hugs
PrincessCambria: Thanks...let's see how long I can keep it going whistling grin

Chapter 2

The Anakin Solo slowly appeared over the far edge of the city-planet of Coruscant. In the airlessness of space, it seemed to move silently, propelled not by giant engines, but the will of those inside. It massive shape seemed to dwarf the smaller vessels that swarmed around it. Usually the space lanes around Coruscant were defined; it would take an act of the Senate proposed by the force itself to interrupt that flow. Yet it seemed that the power wielded by Jacen Solo and his Galactic Alliance Guard seemed to supersede even Coruscant traffic control as it moved in towards the planet on its return from Hapes.

On the bridge of the ship, Alliance officers went about their duties, efficiently as always. These officers were amongst the most proficient and loyal in all of the Galactic Alliance. That loyalty had been transferred to their new commander; loyalty, and a sense of respect-even fear- that they could not name and would never mention.

Jacen Solo was seated at his desk in the office he had claimed for himself. It was sparsely decorated, almost sterile. The furniture, while functional, was utilitarian without any color to lessen the severity. The centerpiece of the room was a large viewport behind the desk and the myriad of stars it showcased. His back was pointedly to the viewport. Ever since that vis…dream he had experienced, he felt vaguely uneasy around it. Instead, his attention was fixed on the young man in front of him.

Ben sat in front of Jacen’s large metallic desk, trying his best not to fidget. He had reported his actions to Jacen on the return trip in his role as a Jedi, but had only just submitted his GAG report.

“And you have left nothing out?” asked Jacen. Ben shook his head. “Well then, everything looks in order. Personally, I think you acquitted yourself well.”

“But I failed,” Ben interjected. “I didn’t arrest Uncle Han and accidentally slashed Zekk. How’s that a success?”

“I never said it was a success, I merely said you did well. You tried to do the right thing in arresting Han Solo, and while you did lose control of your lightsaber- we’ll work on control later- if Zekk had been doing his duty and helping you try to arrest Solo, he might not have been there,” Jacen explained.

Something about that explanation made Ben uncomfortable, but he was able to hide as the door chimed. A young female lieutenant Ben recognized as a communications officer on the bridge hesitantly walked in.

“The day’s comm contacts, sir. Military contacts are in black, diplomatic in green, and suspicious in red. There are three marked that seem especially suspect,” she reported, never quite managing to look Jacen in the eye. She handed over the datacard and Jacen slid it into his datapad.

“It all looks to be in order…take it down to records.” He started to remove it. “Wait. This contact, the Tender Box, what was it’s purpose and cargo?”

“Unknown, sir. It briefly jumped into system on the far side from the planet and remained only long enough to for us to hail before jumping out again. By the time we realized something was amiss, it was too late to calculate an exit vector. We…I assumed smugglers, sir,” the lieutenant replied hesitantly.

“You aren’t far off. Add this transponder to our known list of aliases for the Millennium Falcon. Make sure that the warrant for the arrest of Han and Leia Solo is updated with the new information. Also, have Judicial issue a bulletin that Jaina Solo is to be brought in for questioning- not an arrest warrant at this point,” Jacen ordered.

Ben looked at him quizzically, and asked, “Why Jaina? I was with her on board, and while she didn’t help me arrest Uncle Han, she didn’t do anything illegal.”

“She was asked to give a list of known aliases for the Millennium Falcon, and that one was left off the list. She thought it up. I simply want to know why she didn’t feel it necessary to mention.”

In a quick motion, Jacen slid out of his chair and moved around the desk. He stood before Ben. Looking down at him, Jacen lectured, “We cannot allow family ties to interfere with our duties. My parents are still my parents, but I have to look at it from another angle. They are also some of the most influential people in the galaxy. By throwing their support behind Corellia or any other rebels, they are only prolonging the war. By arresting them and bringing them in, I may lost my parents, but I come that much closer to ending this conflict. What good is it to keep our family together when the galaxy is destroyed around us?” Jacen’s eyes took on a faraway gleam. “Sacrifices have to be made. No matter the cost.” His eyes drifted almost unwillingly toward the viewport. “No matter the cost.”

Ben could only wonder what his master was seeing.

Here is the next part...now that Tempest is finally being put on the shelves, this story will make a little more sense.

P.S. This chapter is ridiculously long and unbeta'ed. Any mistakes are mine

Chapter 3

Two Weeks Later

Jagged Fel did not fidget. At least, not by most standards. The only signs of his nervousness were the occasional tugs on the cuffs of his jacket and the slight drumming of his fingers against the stripe on the side of his uniform pants. He stared at the two large, ornately carved wooden doors as though they would open strictly by the force of his will. The conference room that lay behind them was well appointed, but not remarkable. It was the meeting soon to start that was the cause of his unsettled state. He allowed himself a glance at his chronometer, followed by a glance to the man beside him.

“If I have heard nothing by my appointed entrance, I will not make the announcement,” he said. His tone made it clear that this was not a threat, merely a statement of fact. “I will not do this without assurance of my family’s safety.”

Admiral Pelleaon laid his hand on the shoulder of the nervous young commander. “I personally picked them team to extract them. I have little doubt that word will come soon. Besides, if you were not to make the announcement, I believe you would have several angry moffs. I did not warn them that you arranged to have this meeting broadcast over the HoloNet,” he said, his voice betraying a gentle amusement.

Jag pulled at his cuffs once again. “The events in the Hapes Cluster forced me to move up the timetable. I would have preferred to do this in several steps, rather than at once. Unfortunately, it appears that Colonel Solo has taken that option away from me.”

“Ah yes, Colonel Solo. It would appear that he has taken to his position in the Guard rather well. I do not know if you noticed in today’s intelligence report, but he has increased the urgency on the arrest warrant for his parents,” the white-haired admiral said, sparing a glance for the tall soldier at his side. “It also mentioned that Jaina Solo is also to be brought in for questioning.”

Jag arched an eyebrow, but offered no other emotion as he sighed, “It appears that the divisions in that family are deeper than I had assumed. Even now, I pity them, so far as I…” Whatever he was going to say was cut off by the soft, urgent chimes of the comlink in his pocket. He had it in his hand, speaking into it before the admiral could react.

“Fel.”

A familiar voice issued from the small device. “Four packages in from the cold.”

A slight tremble shook the comlink. It took a moment for Jag to respond. “Four?”

“Four. It was time to get rid of the shadows.”

“Copy that…Father.”

With that, Jag replaced the comlink in his pocket. With one last tug on the cuffs of his uniform, Jag squared his shoulders. With a small smile playing at the edges of his lips, he motioned to Pelleaon. “After you, sir.”

As Pelleaon approached the doors, they opened out simultaneously, framing the Admiral in his entrance. Jag steeled himself to wait for his introduction by the Admiral.

----------

The cantina was like all of the others on Tatooine- dusty, dark, and armed to the teeth. Clusters of beings held to the shadows of room, paying little attention to the other patrons in hopes that the favor would be returned. Over the bar, a battered screen showed a game of smashball that held absolutely no one’s attention. It was fairly quiet- there hadn’t been a fight in at least the past half hour. All of this suited Han and Leia Solo just fine.

They had been on Tatooine for almost two weeks now. Their first act had been to release Lady Morwan. Needless to say, she was not happy after her long confinement in the forward hold of the Millennium Falcon. However, her indignation lessened as she saw the state of the rest of the ship. She quickly bartered her way off planet, back towards the Hapes Cluster. While they did not think that anyone on planet was keeping an eye on them yet, Han and Leia took no chances. They briefly left the planet and landed again under a different set of aliases.

Han stretched out his arm, meaning to lay it across the back of the booth. He quickly withdrew it when he noticed a dark sticky substance whose origin he didn’t want to question too closely. He gestured to Leia, and whispered under his breath, “Add a Wookie, a crazy old man, a farmboy, and a couple of droids, and we’re forty years in the past. Maybe this time around I’ll be able to avoid pushy princesses.”

He was rewarded with an elbow to the ribs for his efforts and a quiet laugh for his efforts.

“Watch it, hotshot. This time I might just leave you in that compacter,” Leia replied quietly. While a soft smile was on her face, even the darkness could not hide the dullness in her eyes. Han recognized it all too well; he saw it every day in the mirror. Tatooine was far removed from the conflict in Corellia and Hapes, but the HoloNet carried the reports everyday. Their son was at the center of the war. Their daughter had not been heard from.

Han attempted to lighted the situation, joking, “Well, I’ve been meaning to lose some weight. Trash compacter could probably take care of that real easy. I mean, all of this cantina food? My youthful figure isn’t like this just naturally. I have to…” He trailed off as he noticed that Leia’s attention wasn’t on him anymore. Rather it was on the screen above the bar. It seemed that most of the other patrons attention was fixed in the same place.

In the place of the smashball game was the face of Arda Fortten, one of the more popular news reporters. The barkeeper reached up and turned the volume up.

“…historic meeting of the Council of Moffs from the Imperial Remnant. This is the first time that reporters have been allowed to record live. There really is no precedent for this, as internal Imperial workings have never been open to the public, so anything that I say at this point is sheer speculation. But if I were to hazard a guess, I would assume that this is an announcement of the death of Grand Admiral Gilad Pelleaon. It seems the only announcement of significant magnitude to warrant an unheard of public address. As you know, Admiral Pelleaon was instrumental in holding the Remnant together during…wait, I’m receiving word that the feed is coming in. Let’s go to that.”

The screen changed to an image of two tall wooden doors. Almost instantly, both doors opened to reveal the image of a man in a white uniform. Another figure was visible in the background, but not clearly. It was the man coming through the doors that dominated the image though. It appeared that Arda Fortten had it wrong; Grand Admiral Pelleaon was very much alive.

The stately Admiral walked to the center of the room and placed himself in one of two empty seats in the center of the long, rectangular table. He nodded greetings to the others seated along the table’s edge, then turned his attention to the gaggle of reporters directly in front of him.

“Greetings. This is a historic moment for the Empire. This is also a historic moment for me personally. This is both my first and last address as Supreme Commander of the Forces of the Imperial Remnant.”

At this a low murmur erupted in the cantina. Han and Leia exchanged uneasy glances. While they had not always agreed with Pelleaon, he had been a strong leader and, in the past years, an occasional friend.

He continued speaking, “In my time, I have been a part of many wars and petty skirmishes, seen an Empire rise and fall, and…

----------

In the offices of the Corellian government, Wedge Antilles swung his feet off his desk and leaned closer to the viewscreen in his office. Pelleaon was a wily old warrior, adept not only at maneuvering in space, but also in politics. If Wedge’s knowledge of Imperial procedure served him right, then the Supreme Commander had the power to appoint his successor. He let out a low whistle. Well, this is going to make things interesting, he thought, just as the game heats up, let’s add a new player. He shook himself out of his reverie and turned his attention back to the screen.

“…may not be able to tell, but I am speaking to you today from Ord Sedra. Once a simple supply depot, it was overrun by the Yuuzhan Vong. Liberated in a joint effort by our own forces and a few Jedi, it quickly became a gathering point for refugees from around the system. In the past three years, under the direction of a new commander, this once insignificant world has become one of the wealthiest, most secure, most independent, and dare I say happiest worlds under Imperial control. All of this can be attributed to the efforts of one man.”

At this point, the Admiral stopped speaking and reached down for the glass of water sitting in front of him. Wedge knew that this was merely a ploy. Pelleaon wanted to make sure that everyone would pay attention to whatever he was about to say next.

“This young man has not always worn an Imperial uniform, but his heart is in the Empire. He has spent time amongst our allies…and amongst our enemies. His talents cannot be denied. On a personal note, I have not seen so good a strategist in a great many years.”

For reasons Wedge could not explain, a knot of dread began to develop in his stomach.

“This young man is the son of nobility, a pilot beyond compare, and a leader for the future. I have presented him to the moffs, and they have given him their unanimous support.”

That knot of dread began to grow as Wedge started to put the pieces together. If he was right, he didn’t know whether to rejoice or scream. If he was right, his family wasn’t as torn as he had assumed, and his planet had just gained a lethal potential enemy.

Pelleaon continued, “It has been my honor to serve my Empire these many years, but now it is time for this warrior to step back in favor of a new generation. A new generation for a New Galactic Empire. I may rest in piece knowing that the Empire I have devoted my life to will thrive in the hands of her new Supreme Commander, Jagged Fel.”

Wedge buried his head in his hands.

----------

In a cantina on Tatooine, Han and Leia Solo shared disbelieving glances.

----------

On a Star Destroyer far above Coruscant, Jacen Solo watched, betraying no emotion.

----------

In a dingy rented room on Bilbringi, Jaina Solo wept.

He gestured to Leia, and whispered under his breath, “Add a Wookie, a crazy old man, a farmboy, and a couple of droids, and we’re forty years in the past. Maybe this time around I’ll be able to avoid pushy princesses.”
laugh

I especially liked how you had the responses from Wedge, H/L and Jaina regarding the grand announcement.

Nicely done applause

Great start! I haven't gotten Tempest yet, but I've read some of the spoilers and everything seems to fit so far. It should be interesting to see your take on Legacy and how it will turn out. I especially liked this last chapter. Keep up the good work!!

Wow.

This is your first fan fic?!

This is very well done for a first effort.

I'll admit there were a few parts I didn't get the references on, but it might be because I haven't read Tempest yet.

You include a good amount of detail in here without seeming to go overboard. I especially liked how you showed the big announcement through several p.o.v.s. And I'm curious as to why Jaina's reaction was to cry.

I really enjoyed reading this start and look forward to what you come up with next.

Solo_and_Fel: Thanks!

I'll admit there were a few parts I didn't get the references on, but it might be because I haven't read Tempest yet. I started it right where Tempest ended. If you haven't yet, go read Tempest! wink It's great.

You include a good amount of detail in here without seeming to go overboard. I especially liked how you showed the big announcement through several p.o.v.s. And I'm curious as to why Jaina's reaction was to cry. Thanks! The next post will have more of those reactions, especially Jaina's, with a little of her backstory.

Lyne: Thanks!

I really like how you've built up the momentum in this story.

Thanks! Actually, my biggest worry was that it was dragging along!

The next post should be up sometime in the next couple of days...and once finals are out of the way worried , updates should come pretty quickly praying .

Thanks for reading grin .
