Ooh I like Jag standing up to Jacen like that. Good for him.
But that was too funny seeing Han and Soontir the only ones behaving themselves.
Thank the Force that whiskey bottle was accessible. I'm just saying.
You know I'm still liking Davert. Probably because he's so sarcastic. It seems I'm drawn to those types.
Jag and Jaina working together. Perfect. This kind of makes up for him doing the noble thing in As Time Goes By.
Great update

I must confess I'm enjoying this story very much. Your Jag is just too cool.
Great how Jag stood up to Jacen. He would make a great Emperor!
As for Jacen, that boy really needs a good spanking.
He's worse by the chapter...
I can understand Jag's apprehension about the meeting... and to find that only Soontir and Solo are behaving themselves
Nice job!
I'm looking forward to those weekly updates.

What a wonderful chapter....
I loved the way Jag stood up to Jacen.
Too cool...
The scene in the conference room was priceless... Han and Tir just watching the show... that was hilarious!!!
Can't wait for more.

Han and Soontir exchanged a glance. “We decided to let bygones be bygones, found the whiskey, and settled in to watch the show.”
I also loved Jag standing up to Jacen. Great update.

Jag vs. Jacen - Rocked my world.
A lesser man would have been silenced by the look of fury on Jacen’s face. When he spoke, his voice was quiet and colder than the vacuum of space. “Enjoying your power trip, Jag?
Jag matched him tone for tone. “Less than you are, Jacen.”
And Fels & Solos - very cool. Interesting to see them pair up and go at it. I think Han & Soontir's response was the best.
Can't wait for more!

I am so glad I was introduced to your stories. This one is phenomenal and makes me mad at myself for not being able to write action and strategy sequences. Well done and I look forward to an update.

Chapter 13
----------
For the first time in a long time, he stared at the vista of space from inside a cockpit. The view was breathtaking- stars in every direction. If he hadn’t been so nervous, he might have tried to identify a few of them.
It had been much too long since he’d been in a cockpit. Sure, he’d had the typical training every officer experienced. It simply wasn’t one of his favorite things to do. He had never enjoyed the dogfights, even in the simulators. And, if he was honest with himself, he wasn't any good at flying.
And then there was this particular battle. He made a lazy arc around the burned out hulk beneath him, trying to divide his attention between his scanners and the space around him. It didn’t matter, though. He knew he was dead regardless of what he did.
There it was. A tiny blip on his scanner and a shrill alarm alerted him that another ship had entered range.
Probably an X-wing…little surprise there
, he thought to himself. Instinctively, he juked to the right as two shots lanced over his left wing. They hit the derelict beneath him, shooting debris up and away. He spun through the debris and newly created hole, hoping to buy himself a few moments to regroup and turn towards his attacker.
It didn’t work. As he cleared the remains of the ship, the X-wing was waiting for him, already firing. In a desperate attempt to get away, he looped back over the ship, twisting the yoke as he did. When the other ship followed his path, he was already in position and fired a volley toward the other. One bolt managed a glancing hit, but the pilot was good enough to avoid the others. Putting on a burst of speed, the X-wing raced towards him. For a moment he was afraid they were going to collide.
Then, in an impossible move, the other ship pulled up and over, rotating as it did. In a split second, the ship that had been on a collision course with him was now on his tail, relentlessly firing. He watched his shields weaken with every hit, and wondered why his attacker didn’t just finish him off. He reached for his stick one last time, but everything went black…
----------
The hatch behind him sprung open with a hiss. Groaning, he levered himself out of his seat and into the hanger. Ten sealed cockpits sat around him, simulators hooked together. He rubbed the back of his neck and walked towards the only other open simulator in the room.
“And why do I continue to put myself through this sort of humilitation?”
Wedge Antilles turned around and faced him. “I don’t know, Captain. Maybe because you have a constant desire to better yourself and want to learn from the best?”
“No, that’s not it.”
“Maybe then it’s because you’re a Captain and I’m an Admiral, and I can order you to?”
Captain Jon Vetter looked at Wedge. “That’s probably it,” he sighed. “I have a law degree from the University of Coruscant and I’m a toy to keep the admiral from getting bored.”
Wedge started walking away; Jon followed. “That’s insubordination. If it weren’t true, I’d write you up for it. At least you’re better at that than you are at flying.”
“Yes, sir.” They walked along in silence. Without looking at Wedge, Vetter casually asked, “That’s not all, is it?”
“Why don’t we talk in my office?” Wedge replied just as casually, scanning the corridor. There were a few people around, and though no one looked particularly interested in their conversation, it was better to be safe. In the Corellian military, paranoia was healthy.
It was only a short walk from the sim room to Wedge’s office. That was no accident; Wedge still preferred to be closer to the pilots than the officers. The office lacked a personal touch. It was large and well appointed, as befitted an Admiral in the Corellian military, but there were no personal effects- no holos, no displays. Instead of taking a seat behind his desk, Wedge sat in one of the chairs on the other side of the room. He indicated for Jon to join him.
This isn’t going to be official
, Jon thought to himself as he took a seat.
Something’s going on
.
Neither man spoke. Wedge studied the man in front of him. As Jon was the captain of his flagship, Wedge had quickly struck up a friendship with the younger man. By now, he knew Jon’s file backwards and forwards. He had studied it constantly over the past few days. Native Corellian, law degree from the University of Coruscant, effective ship commander. He had been in the GA military, left abruptly five years ago, joined the Corellian military soon after. What Wedge didn’t know was how Jon would react to next request.
“Captain,” Wedge started out before correcting himself, “Jon.” He paused for a moment, thinking of how to start. Technically, he was about to propose treason.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time
, he thought to himself.
I’m getting good at it.
“Let me tell you about a conversation I had a few days ago…”
----------
It was long past working hours onboard the ship. Wedge Antilles stretched and glared at the datacards lying on his desk. For years people had asked him why he turned down so many promotions in his career. Usually he told them that he wanted to stay in the cockpit as long as possible. And while that was true, it wasn’t the whole truth: Wedge just knew that the higher the rank, the more paperwork. He glanced out the viewport, wondering if there was some sort of scouting mission that he could claim rank on.
The quiet ding of his comm system shook him out of his reverie. He sighed and pressed the button.
“Sir, this is Lieutenant Akeed in Communications.”
Even with a skeleton crew, Wedge hadn’t been able to learn every name. “Of course, Lieutenant. What is it?”
“Sir, I’m receiving a communiqué from what looks like the Imperial Remnant. It’s addressed directly to you.”
All fatigue bled away. Like most others in the galaxy, Wedge had been keeping a close eye on the Remnant for the past few weeks. First, he was stunned to see Admiral Pelleaon retire. He had figured that the old man would never step down. Then he was floored when his own nephew was named Supreme Commander of the Remnant. Wedge favored long odds; it was a necessity for being a Rogue. Still, he would never have guessed that Jag would take over. Then, only a while ago, the news of Pelleaon’s death had been broadcast.
“Send it on up. And if anyone asks, I’m not available,” Wedge said.
Within moments, his nephew’s face appeared on the viewscreen. Wedge decided to take the initiative.
“Admiral,” Wedge said coolly.
“Admiral,” Jag acknowledged in turn. He hesitated. Drawing a deep breath, Jag started again. “Uncle, I…”
Wedge held up a hand to stop him. “I’ll make a deal with you. I won’t say a word about you ruling the Empire if you don’t ask why I never tried to check up on you after that Killik mess.” He heard about what had happened at Tenupe from several sources, including an apologetic Leia Solo, but he had never sought to contact Jag personally. For the past five years, Wedge felt vaguely guilty and seeing Jag again brought those feelings out full force.
Jag breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s a deal I’m willing to take.”
“As good as it is to talk to you, I get the feeling this isn’t a social call,” Wedge said leaning back in his chair.
Jag remained sitting perfectly upright. “It isn’t. I want to talk to you about the future. May I be blunt?”
“Please.”
“Then here it is. Corellia will fall. There is no doubt about it. It will fall and it will burn and it will be at the hand of Jacen Solo.”
Wedge was silent. Finally, he responded. “I know.” That one statement aged him twenty years. Wedge was much too good of a strategist to delude himself any farther. The civilians in the government could talk about settlements and treaties, but they were grasping at the wind. Things had proceeded beyond the point of diplomacy. This conflict would be settled by arms, and the Galactic Alliance had all the advantages.
Relentlessly, Jag continued. “And when that happens, what will become of your fleets, your troops, you? Prison camps and red tape- both of which are specialties of Colonel Solo’s."
“So you want me to join up with you, is that it?” Wedge asked. As usual, he was able to see several moves ahead on the board.
“That’s overly simple, but yes. We have a mutual enemy, and it only makes sense to confront it together. Corellia will be the first, but it won’t be the last. Bothawui, Commenor, Fondor…more planets will fall,” Jag replied.
“Jag, I know you’re family, but I have to ask: How do I know this isn’t an Imperial power grab?”
Jag broke his formal posture, leaning toward the holocomm camera. “Here is what I propose. Two negotiators, one from the Remnant, one from your fleet, meet and hammer out a treaty of mutual defense and assistance. Then, once the battle for Corellia begins in earnest, we have grounds to intervene.”
“But let me make it clear,” Jag continued. “I want a treaty with
you
, not the Corellian government. They have no idea about strategy. Who exactly planned the assassination attempt on Queen Mother Tenel Ka? That was a massive blunder.”
Wedge sighed. “Not me, I can tell you that. I found out about it from the Holonews. As for your other proposal…well, it can’t hurt to have a few negotiators look at it. I already have someone in mind. Of course, I want to see what they come up with before committing to anything. I hate flying blind.”
“Of course. I’ll transmit the details to you.” Jag moved as if to end the transmission, when Wedge cut him off.
“Jag, politics and planning aside…how are you?” Wedge asked sincerely.
“I’m fi-“ Jag stopped abruptly in the middle of a word. If there was anyone with whom he could be honest, it was Wedge. “Honestly, I don’t know. The past few weeks have been like flying through hyperspace without sensors. I have no idea what is coming up. Between the death of the Admiral, dealing with the GA, administrating the Empire, and trying to keep the peace between the Solo family and my own…”
“Wait a minute, the Solo’s are there?”
“Oh yes.”
“All of them?” Wedge asked, dumbfounded. He knew that things had not ended well between Jaina and Jag, even if he didn't know the specifics.
“Except for Jacen.”
“And your family.”
“That’s correct,” Jag said with a sigh.
“And Han and Soontir haven’t killed each other yet?”
Jag gave a humorless chuckle. “Believe it or not, they’re the only ones behaving themselves. It’s Jaina and my mother that I’m worried about.”
“Knowing Jaina, and if Syal’s anything like she used to be…let’s just say I’m glad I’m not in your shoes.”
“I’ll trade with you. Or exchange them…for Wes Janson, perhaps?”
“Jag,” Wedge laughed. “Even I’m not that desperate.”
----------
Jon Vetter leaned back in his seat. Of all the conversations he had expected to have with his CO, this wasn’t one of them.
“Let me try to sum this up, sir. The new Imperial Supreme Commander- your nephew- wants to work out a deal where this fleet joins the Empire if or when Corellia falls. The Solo family is in the Empire. And you are sharing this with me why, sir? As a lawyer, I feel compelled to point out that this is technically treason.”
“It’s because you’re a lawyer that I tell you all this, Jon. I want you to be that negotiator. And before you object, at least hear me out.” Wedge replied. He ticked off the points on his fingers. “One, you have both legal and fleet experience. Two, you have no real allegiance to the Corellian government; only Corellia herself. Three, there is no love lost between you and the GA. Four, you’re enough of a realist to see that this is our best option. And five…” Wedge leveled him with a stare. “You’re one of the only people I trust enough to do it.”
“That’s an excellent speech, sir.” Vetter stopped for a minute, thinking the proposal over. While he wasn’t enthusiastic about the idea, he couldn’t dismiss it out of hand. “If I agreed, how would this work?”
“Captain, you have 52 days leave stored up. How does a vacation sound?”
“Just for the record, boss, you’re a lousy travel agent.” Vetter stood and walked toward the viewport. “Alright, sir, I’ll do it. But there is something you should know beforehand.”
Wedge tensed. “What?”
Vetter turned back to face him, running a hand through his blond hair. “I only mention it now because with Jacen Solo on one side of this thing, and the rest of the Solo’s on the other, it might become an issue. About five years ago, I was an up and coming star in the GA Fleet legal department, if I say so myself. Around that time, I started having horrible headaches, passing out even. After seeing every doctor in a five system radius, they finally figured out what it was and corrected it. But, in the process, they found something else, too.”
“I’m slightly Force sensitive, sir.”
“Well,” Wedge said. “That’s unexpected. Why aren’t you with the Jedi?”
“Frankly, I didn’t want to join. Most of the time, I don’t agree with the policies, philosophies, or practices of the Jedi Council. I was afraid that if the Fleet knew, they’d push me into joining. So, I resigned my commission and came home. Then…well you know the rest of the story.”
Wedge rose and walked over to his desk. Vetter didn’t say anything; by now he could tell when Wedge was deep in thought. He saw it often enough on the bridge or in strategy sessions.
Finally, Wedge sat down behind his desk. “I don’t think it’ll be an issue. Who knows, it might even help.”
“If you say so, sir,” Vetter replied, even though a dubious expression spread across his face. He turned toward the door, looking back as his CO offered one last comment.
“Force sensitive and you’re
still
that bad of a pilot?”
Vetter just gave a resigned salute and walked out into the corridor.
