RE: Foreign Shores Unknown (Post-Tempest AU, J/J, H/L, Jacen, etc.) AUTHOR'S NOTE 7/9!
And it's a long one!
----------
Chapter 14
Jacen brushed a hand down his dark uniform as he walked out of the Jedi Council room. It hadn’t gone well. In fact, he’d been in battles with less tension.
“Jacen!”
It took him a moment to respond. Practically everyone he talked with called him Colonel or Master. Only his family still called him Jacen, and he hadn’t spoken with them in weeks.
He turned to see who addressed him so informally. Kyp Durron hurried to catch up with him. Jacen stifled a sigh and slowed down. Kyp was on the list of opponents he tried to avoid.
“What is it, Master Durron? I’ve got a meeting at Crix Base that I’m already late for,” Jacen said, irritated.
Kyp held out both palms in front of him in a placating gesture. “Sorry, Sorry. Just needed to ask you a question. Or two. First off, if you were trying to make a statement by not wearing your Jedi robes, we got it.”
“Durron, I really don’t have time to stay and critique my wardrobe choices with you. If there’s nothing else…” Jacen turned to walk off.
“Like I said, sorry.” The older Jedi Master dropped his forced air of geniality. “There is something else. Have you heard anything from your parents or Jaina? They seem to have disappeared.”
Jacen reverted to his role as Colonel Solo of the GAG. “Master Durron, all three of my family members are unfortunately enemies of the GA. What makes you think I’ve kept in any sort contact with them, other than issuing warrants?”
If Kyp was surprised at Jacen’s lack of sentimentality, it didn’t show. “Apparently, I’m mistaken.” He offered the younger man a short nod. “Good evening, Colonel Solo.”
Without a look back, Jacen walked away. The conversation didn’t improve his mood any; it only worsened it. He glanced at his chrono and did a quick conversion in his head. The team he sent to Ord Sedra should touch down any minute.
In the past few days, Jacen’s eyes turned increasingly toward Imperial space. Corellia had become little more than a hindrance. It wasn’t
if
Corellia would be defeated, but
when
. The Empire would be the only remaining obstacle to Jacen’s vision of the galaxy. What had started as an attempt to protect his family spiraled into so much more.
Now, I can’t settle for a safe galaxy,
Jacen thought.
Nothing but a galaxy remade will be enough. Lumiya opened my eyes, but even she can’t see the horizon.
The last time he spoke to Lumiya, she assured him that his Imperial problem would soon be taken care of. Jacen wasn’t sure if he believed her; of course, he tended not to believe anyone these days. Still, if her plan worked, it would save him the hassle and if it didn’t, then he wasn’t responsible.
He arrived at the base on autopilot, lost in his thoughts. The corporal on duty offered a perfect salute, which Jacen returned.
“Corporal Lowet.”
The corporal beamed at the personal address. “Colonel Solo, sir.”
“I have a few things to take care of. Admiral Niathal will be here soon. Show her in when she arrives,” Jacen ordered, not unkindly.
“Of course, sir. Anything else?”
“Comm Ben Skywalker for me, let him know I’d like to see him first thing in the morning.”
“Will do, sir. Be good to see the kid again.” At that, Jacen smiled. Ben commanded a real respect and affection from the men. He could use that.
“Good night, Corporal.”
“Yes, sir,” Corporal Lowet responded, again snapping off a perfect salute.
Jacen reached the large room that he used as an office when not on the
Anakin Solo
and sat down to wait for his report from the Imperial Remnant.
----------
It was the middle of the night at Ord Sedra, but the Imperial base was on high alert. The team from the GA would be arriving any minute. Jag and Davert stood on the walkway above the VIP hangar, watching the troopers below ready the hangar. It was no sign of respect that the GA was to land in the VIP hangar. Jag did not want the GA to see the squadrons of newly built and improved clawcraft in the main hangar bay.
“Do you think he planned it all?” Davert asked suddenly, resting his hands on the railing in front of him.
“What do you mean?” Jag responded. He was careful not to stand too closely to the railing. His white grand admiral’s uniform was carefully chosen to make an impression on the GA delegation, and it wouldn’t do to have streaks across the front.
“Solo. Do you think he planned the entire spaceport operation as a front to get a spy team in here?” Davert elaborated.
“He didn’t.” Both men turned as Jaina Solo approached them on the walkway. Her black jumpsuit stood in stark contrast to the gray and white dress uniforms. “It’s not his style.”
Jag threw her a look. “Lumiya?”
“It fits,” Jaina sighed. “And takes my mind places that I really don’t want to think about.”
“Well, you’re going to have to start thinking about it soon,” Davert interjected.
Jaina started to respond, but was cut off by the mechanical whine of the hangar doors opening. Against the backdrop of the night sky, a glimmer of light was quickly approaching.
“You need to leave now, Jaina,” Davert said. “Our greeting party is by invite only, no Rebels allowed.”
“No,” Jaina said defiantly.
“You do realize that if they see you here, they just might consider it treason?”
Jaina shrugged. “Been there, done that.”
Jag stepped into the conversation. “Seriously, Jaina. If they know that you and your family are here, things will get even more difficult and dangerous.”
“I know,” Jaina said as she turned to Jag. “But I also know that if this is a plot of Lumiya’s, I might be able to sense something from someone. And since I’m the only Jedi here, it has to be me. It might give us just a little more to go on than what we have now.”
Jag unclasped his hands from behind him and tugged on the cuffs of his sleeves to straighten them. “Fine. But stay on the walkway, out of sight.”
Jaina slunk back into the shadows as Jag and Davert made their way down to the deck of the hangar bay. The boxy GA shuttle settled down with a hiss. While no weapons were visible, earlier scans proved that it wasn’t unarmed. After a few minutes, the ramp lowered.
The first onto the hangar deck was an older woman with dark skin and hair. She was followed by a deep green colored Twi’lek and four other, younger humans. Jag guessed that they were intelligence operatives rather than legal specialists. All were dressed in the black uniforms of the GAG.
The woman approached Jag and offered a respectful salute. “Admiral, I’m Major Lona Aquilla of the Galactic Alliance Guard Legal Department. Let me express my sympathies on the tragic loss of Admiral Pelleaon. I wish that our visit could have been under better circumstances.”
Jag returned her salute. “As do I, Major Aquilla.”
“Allow me to introduce the rest of my team. This is Lieutenant Dis Tymp,” she said, pointing to the Twi’lek. “And Specialists Eornen, Sander, Oford, and Greeves,” pointing to each in turn.
Jag inclined his head in their direction. “And this is my attaché, Colonel Bronnan Davert.” He started walking toward the hatch, with Davert right behind him. A squad of stormtroopers closed ranks around the colonel and admiral. The GA team hurried to catch up.
As they walked, Jag continued, “I assume that Colonel Solo informed you of the conditions placed upon your visit.”
“He did, sir and I must protest…” Major Aquilla began, pushing her way past the group of guards surrounding Admiral Fel. Each guard tensed and moved to raise their weapons, until a subtle signal from the Admiral told them to stand down. They did so, but underneath their white armor their body language remained tense.
“Those conditions are not up for negotiation, Major.”
“Sir, I don’t care if we’re in the GA, the Empire, the forests of Endor, or the Unknown Regions. That man is entitled to his legal rights and the conditions that you have placed make that impossible,” Aquilla continued.
Jag stopped in the middle of the corridor. “I said, Major, those conditions are not up for negotiation. And if you attempt to work around them, it will be considered an act of war.” There was no mistaking the steel underlying his voice.
“Yes, sir,” the Major replied.
The rest of the trip to the brig was silent. When they arrived, Major Aquilla was shown to the holding cell where Endran Jeandro was held. He sat in a metal chair against the wall, bloodshot eyes staring straight ahead at nothing. When Major Aquilla walked into the cell, he didn’t even acknowledge her presence. She sat in the only other chair and took out a datapad.
“Ensign Jeandro?” she asked, gently.
The transparisteel doors slid closed, muffling the rest of her words. For a moment, the group stared at the GA lawyer trying to coax the catatonic man into opening up. It seemed futile.
Lieutenant Tymp was the first to speak. “Would it be possible for me to stay here, in case the Major needs my assistance for anything?”
Davert shared a quick look with Jag before responding, “Certainly. With a guard, of course.” Turing to the others, he continued, “If you will all follow me, we’ve set up a room were you can examine the recording of the incident to your heart’s content.”
As the rest of the GA team followed him, one of the intelligence operatives muttered under his breath, “After you’ve doctored it, you mean.”
Even though the comment wasn’t meant to be heard, Davert picked up on it. “Of course we wouldn’t tamper with the recording. We know how much the GA Guard values the integrity of the legal system.”
The intelligence operative glared.
Jag watched the GA team until they disappeared around the corner. A noise from behind him caught his attention, and he turned to see Jaina standing next to the open door of a little used conference room a good distance away from the holding cell. Glancing in the cell in front of him, he saw that Major Aquilla had completely forgotten his presence behind her. He walked down the corridor to the conference room, leaving two guards outside the door as the closed it.
“Well,” he asked without preamble.
“It’s no better or worse than I thought it would be. They are all here on a mission- just not the same one. Aquilla seems to be what she says- definitely passionate about her job and not too pleased with you,” she said with a quick smile. Jag was tempted to return it.
“Lietutenatn Tymp is harder to read. He is definitely focused on his mission, but doesn’t seem to share the same drive. I just don’t know.”
“The other four are definitely not from the legal department. Probably Intelligence.”
Jag nodded thoughtfully. “That’s about what I guessed.”
“I don’t think that they will get much from Jeandro. If it is Lumiya, then she has probably manipulated his mind to the point where he won’t make sense,” Jaina theorized.
“Makes sense,” Jag replied, even though his full focus wasn’t on Jaina. He visibly struggled for a moment, seemingly wanting to say something but unsure how to start. Jaina considered asking him what it was, but a part of her wanted to see him as uncomfortable as she had felt earlier.
“Jaina, I just wanted to say…thank you,” Jag finally managed. “These past few days have been remarkably difficult and…just thank you for what you’ve done.” He reached out and put a hand on her upper arm lightly.
She smiled, a genuine smile and said, “Really, it’s nothing. But you’re welcome.”
They stayed like that for a long minute. Although there was no way to know, they were both thinking the same thing. Both wanted to pull away and both wanted to stay exactly as they were. Neither was willing to make the first motion.
Neither one had to. The door slid open and Davert walked in. He stopped just beyond the doorway as Jaina and Jag hastily moved apart. He looked from one to the other.
“This is going to become a habit, isn’t it?”
He looked down at his chrono to avoid meeting either the Admiral or the Jedi’s eyes. He was brash, not crazy.
“On an entirely different and much safer note, Major Aquilla is now viewing the recording. She wasn’t able to get anything out of Jeandro. All he would say was ‘She said’ over and over again.”
Jaina and Jag exchanged a significant look.
“Jaina, do you think that later you could…” Jag was cut off by the snap-hiss of Jaina’s lightsaber. Davert half stepped, half fell backwards as Jaina pushed toward the door. Both officers followed her, blasters out of their holsters before they stepped into the corridor.
Jaina sprinted down the corridor toward the holding cell where Jeandro was kept. The first thing she noticed was the decapitated trooper outside the open door. Senses open and eyes scanning the area for any remaining enemies, Jaina skidded into the open cell.
The distinctive tang of ionized air hung in the room. It was a smell that Jaina was intimately familiar with. The cell was empty, except for the body of Endran Jeandro lying on the floor. His eyes were open, glazed over. There was no blood anywhere, but the cause of death was easy to determine. The cauterized hole in the middle of his chest left no doubt.
As Jag and Davert sprinted to catch up with Jaina, they noticed the GA team loitering outside the room where they had been investigating the recording of Admiral Pelleaon’s death. Lieutenant Tymp was the first to notice the dead trooper. Before Jag could order the guards to keep them back, the entire GA team was also rushing toward the open cell.
They arrived at the same time. Jaina was standing with her back to the onlookers, lightsaber ignited at her side as she knelt over the body.
“Jedi Solo!” Major Aquilla gaped, her voice a mixture of shock, anger, and confusion. “What have you done?”
Jaina whirled around, ready to defend herself, but Davert beat her there. “Impossible. She was with the Admiral and myself the entire time.”
Lieutenant Tymp stepped forward. “Regardless, this is a very serious situation. Jedi Solo is a wanted criminal and now we find her standing over the body of a dead- a defenseless- Guardsmen. I formally request that we be allowed to extradite Jedi Solo back to the GA to stand trial.”
“Again, impossible.” This time it was Jag who defended Jaina. “Jedi Solo has requested amnesty from the Empire and it has been granted.” He didn’t spare a glance for Jaina. She and Davert were the only ones in the room who knew that no such request had been made. “Regardless, the GA has no grounds to request an extradition of anyone in Imperial Space. All extradition treaties were dropped when the Charter was nullified.”
“Then, Admiral, we have no further business here. But I will be making a report to Colonel Solo, and I can assure you that this is far from over,” Major Aquilla threatened.
“I have no doubt of that,” Jag said and walked away. His rudeness was calculated. I
need to know how far Solo’s ego can be pushed, how to get under his shields,
he thought to himself as Davert, Jaina, and the remaining guards closed in around him.
Things are going to become very bad very quickly. I need every advantage I can get.
---------
It was a quiet walk back to the GA shuttle. Major Aquilla was mentally composing her report to Colonel Solo. She wanted to send it as soon as they were off planet. Of all the things she had expected, finding Jaina Solo standing over the dead body of the prisoner was nowhere on the list.
Each member of her crew debriefed her once they reached the safety of their shuttle, sharing their discoveries and observations. All were trained by Intelligence, and each came to the same conclusion: the recording of what happened at the Ord Sedra spaceport was authentic.
Aquilla sat alone in the captain’s quarters as the ship’s repulsorlifts fired, lifting them away from what she could only think of as the birthplace of a new Empire. A datapad lay haphazardly across the desk, displaying their position relative to the planet. She kept an eye on it, ready to report in just as soon as they cleared the range of the spy systems that were undoubtedly in place.
The datapad pinged when they were clear. Immediately, she punched in the comm code to Colonel Solo’s private office on Crix Base. He must have been expecting it, as he answered immediately.
“Solo.”
“Colonel, it’s Major Aquilla. We’ve cleared Imperial range and the channel is secure.”
“Good. Admiral Niathal is also with me. What did you find?”
Major Aquilla hesitated. She didn’t know where to begin. “Well, sir, it appears that the recording we received was genuine. All of my Intelligence experts determined that it hadn’t been tampered with in any way.”
“Unfortunate, but not unexpected. What else?”
“Did you speak with Jeandro?” Niathal added.
“Yes, sir, ma’am. I’m afraid that I didn’t get much. All he would say, repeatedly, was ‘she said’.”
Colonel Solo’s expression grew dark, but he didn’t say a word. “It’s possible he was mentally disturbed,” Major Aquilla offered, trying to fill the silence.
“Was?” Jacen asked pointedly.
“Yes, sir. While I was viewing the recording for myself, Ensign Jeandro was killed, apparently by lightsaber.” She took a deep breath and continued, “When I arrived, right after it happened, I found your sister standing above him with her own saber ignited. Admiral Fel claimed that she had been with him the whole time, and when my associate asked to extradite her, he claimed that she had requested amnesty.”
Colonel Solo was quiet. Aquilla had been watching her commanding officer closely. He looked more surprised at learning that Jeandro had been killed by lightsaber than at learning his sister was in the Empire. He had looked almost disturbed.
“Sir, I think that—” Aquilla was interrupted as an explosion shook the ship.
“What was that?” Niathal asked.
“I don’t know. It sounded like—” The rest of her words were swallowed by two more explosions in quick succession. Tendrils of smoke started creeping into the cabin.
The door slid open. Lieutenant Tymp strolled in, a detonator in one hand and a red lightsaber flashing in the other.
Major Aquilla sprang from her seat, shouting, “What the—!” She never completed her sentence as a red blade cut through her middle, just out of view of the holocam. He could hear Solo and Niathal shouting, trying to figure out what was going on.
He stepped in front of the holocam. “Sir, we’re under attack! It’s the Empire. There’s a whole squadron of TIE’s out there! The major’s dead and I don’t think,” he paused and faked a cough, “and I don’t think we’ll make it much longer!”
With that, he rammed his saber into the computer below the holocam, severing the connection. Leisurely, he made his way to the emergency hangar. There was a specially modified Tie-fighter waiting for this occasion. He climbed inside and carefully maneuvered the ship into open space. He made a pass over the bow of the ship, making sure that the still-recording ship’s log got a clear image. Using a backdoor that he installed on the trip to Ord Sedra, he remotely sent the log back to Coruscant.
Tymp rolled his ship over, and set a new heading. Almost as an afterthought, he touched the last button on the detonator. The ship behind him flew into a billion fiery pieces, spreading through space. He smiled and touched the hyperspace lever, ready to report to his master on a job well done.

Poor Davert.
OMG! Lumiya has sooo set up the Empire and now Jacen can claim no involvement and it would be the truth.
I wonder how Jag's going to handle this.
Wonderful update

Yeah it is.
Anyway, excellent come back. You do a wonderful job of writing all the different genres--romance, action, politics. This is a great story. Keep it up and I look forward to the next chapter.

I really liked this line, it shows with Jacen that there’s no stopping point with him. He’ll destroy the galaxy if no one stops him.

This was probably my favorite chapter of this story. Davert cracked me up plus I loved the Jaina and Jag scenes.

Heya!
Just found this story, and I love it!
Such great interaction between the characters, and you write them perfectly. I loved Pellaeon, not too mention Han and Leia. Also good original characters! Davert is an interesting one...
Mmmmm, J/J...
Intriguing plot, can't wait to see what happens!

Well, my tail is firmly tucked between my legs. I feel so bad that I haven't updated this in forever.
But, in my own defense, I think I have a pretty good excuse. I've been overseas this summer, studying abroad. Between the fact that my professors actually expected me to study and the fact that I didn't always have computer access, updates were few and far between.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. I start back to school next week and should have new installments to go along with it.
On a semi-related note, would anyone be interested in being my fanfic accountability partner, i.e. prod me into actually posting when I say I am going to? PM me.
Anyway, thanks for being so patient.

P.S. This is a blanket THANK YOU for everyone who voted for me during the awards this summer. I'm thrilled and humbled that "As Time Goes By" won Best Crossover. So again, Thanks!

RE: Foreign Shores Unknown (Post-Tempest AU, J/J, H/L, Jacen, etc.) AUTHOR'S NOTE 8/11/07!
Sentenal
: Thanks!
Hey, I've been peeking in on this story for a while now. And I just have to say wow! Bravo, can't wait for the next installment.
Welcome! Always glad to have new faces on this crazy ride. As for the next installment, see next post!
CCP
: Thanks!
Interesting update. Can't wait to see more.
Interesting...is that a good "interesting" or a bad "interesting"?
Flowerlady
: Thanks!
What a cliff hanger!!!
If Dante were writing today, would he create a circle of Hell for those who write cliffhangers?
Or could we at least get upgraded to Purgatory?
Congrats on the Noms!!!!!
Thanks. I was a bit flabbergasted, but definitely tickled pink!
Lola64
: Thanks!
Poor Davert.
It gets worse.
OMG! Lumiya has sooo set up the Empire and now Jacen can claim no involvement and it would be the truth. I wonder how Jag's going to handle this.
It'll be interesting. I like how Lumiya is(was) not only an out-and-out villian, but also a backstage manipulator. Jag'll have to get creative. If I can say without giving too much away, it's going to be a more "realistic" situation, i.e. there'll be political manuevering, public relations, etc.
BigFatty
: Thanks!
Anyway, excellent come back. You do a wonderful job of writing all the different genres--romance, action, politics. This is a great story. Keep it up and I look forward to the next chapter.
By the way, thanks for offering to keep me accountable to a posting schedule. You're an angel!
TelannaTani
: Thanks!
Great come-back!
That's me, the Comeback Kid! (Yeah right)
Loved the hidden Sith, and the tender J/J moment. Bring on some more o'that!!
Ask and ye shall receive!
Lyne
: Thanks!
I really liked this line, it shows with Jacen that there’s no stopping point with him. He’ll destroy the galaxy if no one stops him.
That's so true. He's been given power and no way to check it, or reason to want to. But even more so than the galaxy, he's on the fast track to destroying himself.
This was probably my favorite chapter of this story. Davert cracked me up plus I loved the Jaina and Jag scenes.
Honestly, it's one of my favorite chapters too. I'm starting to get a feel for J/J scenes and feel more confident writing them.
ShortySC22
: Thanks!
I've just read this entire stoty and wow. I love your style of writing and I can't wait to read more. Do PM me to let me know when you update again? Great story!
Thanks! You're definitely on the PM list.
Demon28
: Thanks!
This story keeps pulling the reader along; really great writing! I love the way you've written Wedge, too. Also love your OC, Darvet. Looking forward to the next posting. Please add me to your PM's.
Consider yourself added to the PM list. Thanks- Wedge is probably my favorite EU character. The X-Wing and Wraith books are the ones that I pick up to read again and again. As for Davert, he's sort of a mix of my favorite TV guys- a little bit of Shawn Spencer, the Tenth Doctor, and Josh Lyman mixed together and put in a uniform. (And ten points to anyone who can figure out those references!)
Solo_and_Fel:
Thanks!
When Jaina was found standing there with the lightsaber = Oh bugger.
When Tymp pulled his attack and Jacen couldn't see = Oh bugger encore.
Pretty much, yeah. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse...
Angry_Bendu1
: Thanks!
Add me to the pm list if you have one please.
Consider yourself added!
_Tenel_Ka_:
Thanks!
Such great interaction between the characters, and you write them perfectly. I loved Pellaeon, not too mention Han and Leia. Also good original characters! Davert is an interesting one...
Thanks! It killed my (metaphorically speaking) to have to kill Pellaeon. And the next chapter will have lots of Han and Leia, as well as another old friend. I'm glad you like my OC's- Davert was the first I've ever really fleshed out.
----------
The next post will be a teaser for the next chapter!
