Great start! I bought and read Tempest the day it came out and I have been waiting (all 3 days) for someone to do a Tempest fic. Lots of interesting material in that book. You've really done well so far. Will Luke/Mara/Ben be making an appearance? If you start a pm list, please add me to it.

Thanks for sharing

Chapter 4

If asked, Wedge Antilles would not say that he was a superstitious man. And despite prolonged exposure to such merry bands of miscreants as the Rogues and Wraiths, he did not consider himself a gambling man. Yet as he watched his white-uniformed nephew- his supposedly dead nephew- greet the moffs that lined the table pictured on his viewscreen, Wedge made himself a bet. If the first call I receive after this broadcast is from Iella, celebrating the return of a beloved family member, then everything will turn out alright, he wagered to himself. On the other hand, if the first call is from Gejjen or any other politician demanding a solution to this new complication, things go downhill from there.

As Jag sat at the last remaining chair, the holocameras in the room zoomed in until none of the others could be seen. Wedge studied his nephew. He looked older- who doesn’t these days, he thought to himself, wryly. The Grand Admiral’s uniform emphasized the streak of white in his hair, and while the scar that ran up from his eyebrow was still the most prominent, there were other, smaller scars that had not been present the last time Wedge had said goodbye.

“It is an honor to be here before you today,” Jag began without preamble. “I follow in the footsteps of a great leader. Admiral Pelleaon is a fine and true son of the Empire. It has been his steady hand on the yoke that has guided the Empire through decades of conflict and tumult.”

“Such days are not resigned to the past, however. Even now, the winds of change are once again sweeping across the galaxy. And we are faced with a choice. The time has come to move toward the future, to throw off the shackles of the past and the entanglements of the present. It is now our responsibility to forge a New Order, one that can address the challenges and opportunities laid out before us.”

A spark seemed to spring from his eyes. The camera view pulled back to show the entire table. For once, there were no visible divisions amongst the moffs. There were no sideways glares, no tense body language. Instead, they were all sitting stiff and upright, with expressions of anticipation.

That hard knot returned to Wedge’s stomach. He had a feeling that whatever was about to happen next was certain to make his life harder.

“It is toward that end that I, with the unanimous support and full confidence of the Imperial Council of Moffs, declare the Imperial Charter and all its accompanying documents and treaties null and void.”

It should not have been possible to startle Wedge Antilles. He was one of the greatest pilots in recent history. He had lived the day-to-day uncertainty of the Rebellion. He had served with Wes Janson for almost forty years. He was still stunned.

He reached down into the bottom drawer of his desk and drew out his reserve bottle of whiskey. Idly he wondered if he was toasting his nephew or deadening the blow. It doesn’t really matter, he thought as he poured himself a good-sized amount. I’m sure I’ll get around to both soon enough.

“Good luck, Jag,” he said, lifting his glass, then downing the contents. “You’re gonna need it.”

----------

In a rented room on Bilbringi, not far from the ground-side portion of the shipyards, Jaina Solo lifted her head. She made no move to wipe away the tears streaming down her cheeks. Seeing Jag walk into that room was absolute last thing she had expected. Last she had heard, he had been waiting for recovery on Tenupe after her mother had shot him down. That was five years ago. Now he was the Supreme Commander of the Empire. And people said the Force didn’t have a sense of humor.

She was happy for him of course, happy that he had found a place. Even though her emotions had been dulled and diluted during her time as a Joiner, Jaina knew that Jag was not entirely satisfied with the position among the Chiss. That happiness was marred by a twinge of selfishness. He had found his place; she was still looking.

Instead of being out there on the front lines, where she was most comfortable, she was sitting in a dingy room on Bilbringi, with a hastily forged alias and a stolen ship. It had been a long journey physically; emotionally, she felt farther from home than she ever had before.

---

Jaina walked down the corridors briskly. She had just stopped by to see Zekk in the medward. Cilghal, who was luckily on-planet, said that he would heal, only that it would take time. Stopping in her quarters only long enough to stow her most prized belongings in a duffel bag, she made her way to the hangar. It took all of her skill and training to avoid any of the masters on the way there.

The next part of her plan was to be the most difficult. The Jedi had been collecting freighters and transports to use on missions were the X-Wings were not prudent.
They’re a good ship, Jaina thought, but they do tend to stick out. She had overheard a snippet of conversation between Master Horn and another Jedi whose voice she didn’t immediately recognize. A new ship had been brought in today. Jaina was counting on her Solo luck not to fail her. If that luck held out, she could grab the ship before any of its specs were entered into the databanks. She felt guilty momentarily. Stealing a ship? Well, Jacen will probably have a warrant out for my arrest soon enough anyway. Ship theft, desertion, withholding evidence...Dad’ll be proud. She palmed open the door and glanced in. There was a lone ship sitting on the deck. Hefting her duffel higher over her shoulder, Jaina turned and…ran straight into a set of Jedi robes.

“Going somewhere?” a frighteningly familiar voice asked.

She looked up. Of all the people…

“Or maybe the better question is why have you been avoiding us,” he continued.

“Avoiding you, Kyp, never. Everyone else…definitely,” Jaina responded. She tried to add a Solo grin to convince him of her innocence, but just could not pull it off.

“That I can understand,” he said. “Without you around, things haven’t been nearly as fun.”

He looked down at her. Jaina could tell that he knew what she intended to do and that he was not going to do anything to stop her.

“You could go with me, you know. This time I promise not to make you carry my luggage.”

“Empty promise. I know you too well.” His smile faded as he looked over her shoulder. “No, I can’t leave. Not yet at least. I left too early during the Vong war. This time, I have to make sure there is nothing left to fight for.”

Impulsively, she threw her arms around his neck.

“Thank you,” she whispered. The very real reality was that she might not ever see this man again. It nearly broke her heart.

His arms tightened. “You’re welcome.”

Eventually, she stepped out of his arms and picked up her duffel. With one last look, she started for the ship. After that, she never looked back.

---

Now she sat alone. She had stopped on Bilbringi only to send a message to her parents and restock supplies. She rented a room under her alias and sent her message from there, as she did not want to run the risk of having it traced back to her ship. Chasing down criminals for the Jedi had given her a very good idea of how to disappear. It was a delightful irony. The message she had sent to her parents was simple: Room for one more?

The Alliance had forever lost its trust with her; she could not condone the actions of her brother or even of the Jedi. While she knew that Wedge would offer her a commission in Corellia’s forces if she asked, she could not betray her friend Tenel Ka by working with those who tried to assassinate her. No, for now Jaina simply wanted to be with her parents.

On the viewscreen, Jag continued. “The Imperial Charter has outlived its usefulness. It is merely a reliquary, a reminder of darker days. The time has come to form a government that addresses the needs of our people and maintains the Empire’s strength and security. Toward that end, I am forming a commission to draw up a new charter. This commission will be composed of the Council of Moffs, the planetary governors, and representatives of the indigenous species within the Empire. I would ask that Admiral Pelleaon head this commission."

For the first time, Jag’s stiff façade broke. He faced the much older man and, with a slight smile, asked quietly, “Surprised?” In a louder voice, he added, “Admiral, you have given much, and surely no one deserves the rewards of retirement more. But I ask this one last act from you, one last legacy for the Empire you have so faithfully defended.”

“Of course,” Pelleaon answered. “It would be my pleasure.”

Turning back to the camera, Jag concluded his remarks. “For the interim, the government will operate under the same principle as it has in the past. There will be no breakdown of law. There will be no economic collapse. There will be no gaps in defense. Even now, temporary diplomatic teams are being dispatched to the Galactic Alliance, the Hapes Cluster, and the Corellian systems. These teams will remain in place until such time as a new charter is enacted and more permanent agreements can be made.”

“Today is the dawn of a bright new future for the Empire. With the resources of her many worlds and the talents and devotions of her people, there is no challenge too large for the Empire. Only the stars hold her limits.”

A quick nod of his head toward the camera operator, and the feed from that Imperial conference was cut off.

Quickly, Jaina muted the sound to the viewscreen. She had no desire to hear the analysis and predictions of so-called experts. Her mind was focused on one fact alone.

Her ex-boyfriend had just restarted the Empire.

Wedge's reaction to seeing Jag on the holo was great. Loved how you showed how lost and lonely Jaina was for her parents.

Her ex-boyfriend had just restarted the Empire.
Loved that part.

Can't wait to see next chapter.

I could really feel Wedge being torn by the news and feel Jaina's despair.

Great update applause

Those were my two favorite lines in the post too!

Lexu: Thanks! grin

Izzard: Hehehe and I thought my ex was bad...

Do I even want to know? I can't really complain about ex's, though. My last boyfriend was the one who first introduced me to the NJO. Ended up breaking up with him and keeping the books... whistling

Lyne: Thanks!

Honestly, I cannot wait for the reunion of Wedge and Jag in the books (if we get to see it rolling_eyes ). Methinks it could be a lot of fun...
Poor Jaina. I just can't help but feel sorry for her right now.

PrincessCambria:: Thanks!

Absolutely loved Jag's speech...spoke volumes.

This made my day. hugs I've thought about being speechwriter some day, and while writing speeches in fanfic isn't quite the same, it's still nice to know that I'm getting my point across.

The next update should be up tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/5). I've got a few days before finals start, so I should be able to get pretty far along in the story. (Who needs to study?)

Thanks for reading!

Oooh. Good detail. It definitely would.

You still managed to build even more tension in the beginning of this chapter up to when Jag made his stunning blow of an announcement.

Ship theft, desertion, withholding evidence...Dad’ll be proud.
Ah, she is Han's little girl.

The rest of Jag's speech was good. Looks like his short time as an ambassador/diplomat served him well.

And since other's have commented on the ex-boyfriend line, I'll say ditto to that.

Nice job. Looking forward to the next installment later.

Chapter 5

“Ya think maybe he left something out, back on Telkur?”

Leia could only nod in agreement. When they had run into Jag on Telkur Station, she had thought that something about his story did not fit. She had not pushed him for answers though; she was too busy trying to bury the guilt she still felt. Never in a million years would she have guessed this.

Han’s incredulous manner sobered up. “This is big, isn’t it.”

Again, Leia nodded, saying, “Han, this is huge. That charter has been in place since the foundation of the Empire. It stretches back to the end of the Old Republic. Now that the Remnant has decided to start over, well…there is nothing to predict how this is going to end.”

“But Jag’s a good kid. Sure he’s a little stiff, but I can think of a lot worse people to run the Remnant. At least he’s not going to get delusions of grandeur and name himself Emperor or start killing aliens or something.”

“I don’t know, Han,” Leia replied, toying with her glass. “I just don’t know. The Jag we ran into on Telkur wasn’t the Jag we knew during the Vong war. He wasn’t even the Jag I shot down over Tenupe. Something in him has changed. I just don’t know whether that change will be for the better or the worse.”

“Now that is hardly a charitable view toward the man who might very well have been your son-in-law.”

The voice from beside them startled Han and Leia. Instinctively, Han placed a hand over his weapon.

“You can relax, Captain Solo,” the voice continued. “I’m hardly the type to shoot first.”

“I am,” Han growled, not moving his hand.

“And somehow, that doesn’t surprise me.” A man slid onto the bench across the table from them. “Allow me to introduce myself. Colonel Bronnan Davert, of the Imperial Navy.”

Looking at him, Imperial would not be the first description that came to mind. In fact, he looked and acted like any of the other riff-raff scattered around the cantina. The only things that identified him as an Imperial were the military cut of his brown hair and the way he spoke, with a slightly clipped tone.

“Fantastic. Nice to meet ya. What are you doing here?” Han asked.

“Why, looking for the Solo’s, of course. Just like everyone else.”

Han and Leia exchanged looks. This was sounding all too familiar. The last time they had this exchange, they ended up stumbling out of a bar drugged, in the middle of a firefight.

“Actually, that is not entirely true. I’m here to deliver a message and to pass along an invitation from the Grand Admiral.”

Leia glanced up in surprise. “Fel?”

“No, Thrawn,” Davert shot back, handing a datacard to Leia. “Of course Fel.”

“I didn’t think that we would be especially high on his list of people to contact regarding his new promotion,” Leia replied as she started to read the message on her datapad. Han leaned closer to read over her shoulder. There was just enough information to convince Han and Leia that the message was in fact from Jag Fel. There was no way that someone else could know some of the conversations referenced.

“If I had my way, he wouldn’t be contacting you at all. Alas, I was overruled. Blasted chain of command.” Davert was quiet for a moment, giving Han and Leia a chance to finish reading the message. “So, will I be accompanying you back to Ord Sedra?”

“You know what this says?” Leia asked.

“Your Highness, I helped write it. I’m the Supreme Commander’s political attaché.”

Han gestured at the screen where the HoloNet was running repeats of Fel’s announcement. “If that’s true, how come you didn’t rate high enough to stick around for the big show?”

“I’m one of the few people that Commander Fel trusts enough to take a mission like this. For some reason, he doesn’t trust easily.” He threw a significant glance in Leia’s direction. “I wonder why that might be.”

“Besides, he seems to think that I lack a necessary level of tact for such a delicate announcement.”

Leia stared at the Imperial officer, brushing his mind with the Force. “You don’t like us,” she concluded.

Davert leaned back and offered a smile. “That’s right. I don’t. Oh, I’m sure that you are nice enough people at dinner, so long as one is on the same side. But you have always considered yourselves above the law. The rules that bind us mere mortals don’t apply to you. So, you have no problem betraying governments at will, starting rebellions whenever you don’t care for the direction of the leadership, and operating completely outside the law, just to name a few reasons.”

Abruptly, he stood. Rubbing his hands together, he said, “But you will have the entire trip to Ord Sedra to convince me otherwise. Now let’s get a move on.”

“Wait a minute. We never said we were going anywhere with you, or accepting any invitation. What makes you think that we’re just going to up and go?” Han retorted, although not as angrily as he might have.

“It’s very simple, Captain. You can accept my invitation and meet with Admiral Fel as an honored guest, or you can accept their invitation,” he pointed to two uniformed beings who had just entered the cantina, “and meet with Omas in binders. Your choice.”

It didn’t take long for Han and Leia to decide. They stood up and motioned to Davert to lead the way.

“Excellent. Now which way to the Millenium Falcon?”

Han bristled. “You think you’re going with us?”

“I’m certainly not about to fly myself. Captain, during the Vong war, I attempted to fly twice. The first time, I was shot down before I left atmosphere. The second, I was shot down before I managed to activate my repulsors. Do you really want to explain to the Admiral why his political aide was killed?”

Leia put a calming hand on Han’s arm, trying to warn him against doing something rash. Luckily for her, it seemed to work this time.

The walk back to the Falcon’s docking bay was fairly silent. Leia kept turning this rather bizarre meeting over in her mind. There were too many unanswered questions. Why does Jag want to meet with us? Is this some sort of elaborate plot of revenge? Or is it something else entirely? And how did Davert find us? Was it just convenient timing, or did he tip off the GA as to where we were? She didn’t have any answers.

When they arrived at the Falcon, they left Davert in the main hold. Escaping to the cockpit, the discussion they meant to have was put temporarily on hold by the light signifying that they had a holocomm message.

“Wonder what that is. Didn’t think we had any friends left who’d call,” Han remarked as he opened the message.

Han and Leia were startled when the face of their daughter appeared, asking if she could join them. Jaina gave her parents her location on Bilbringi, asking if they could meet her there.

Leia looked at Han. “We have to go. She’s reaching out to us. We’re all she has left.” Her tone left no room for argument.

“Yeah, I know. If you could have seen her face back at Hapes…” Han trailed off. “How’s this gonna work? We’re heading for Imp space…to meet with Fel. This could get sticky.”

“We’ll deal with that when the time comes. For now, let’s go get our daughter.”

“Fine, but you get to inform our guest. You politician types ought to be able to communicate well enough.”

Walking back into the main hold, Leia saw Davert idly inspecting the equipment. He did not seem ashamed to have been caught snooping.

“I have heard so much about this ship,” he said, running a hand over the comm station. “It’s fascinating.”

“Well, I’m afraid that you will have more time than you assumed to familiarize yourself with it. We have a slight detour.”

Davert raised an eyebrow. “And what might that be?”

“We will be making a quick stop at Bilbringi to pick up our daughter Jaina,” Leia explained.

It slightly amused Leia to see the brief look of panic on Davert’s face. “And I don’t suppose that I could dissuade you from that idea?” She shook her head. “I was afraid not. Well, the Admiral is always asking the people around him to surprise him. I suppose that showing up with her in tow will count.”

“I always thought that I looked better as a lieutenant anyway.”

----------

Enjoy!
