Still, Chief Omas asked me to relay a request, a request that I happen to agree with. Since the number of incidents connected to the Corellian insurrection has increased galaxy-wide, we ask that the Jedi coordinate any missions that might involve that conflict with the GAG.”

That's not one of Luke's brightest ideas. Now when the GAG does something awful, the Jedi's honor and integrity will be questioned.

Jacen is turning evil - he just killed 17 people without even blinking an eye. And Luke is too blind to do anything.

I like your Kyp.

As Luke watched him walk down the corridor in the opposite direction, he thought, I’ve lost another one. I wonder how many more we can afford to lose.

That last thought shook him. He wondered if the fact that he was even asking the question meant that he hadn’t already lost himself along the way.

Disturbed, he continued his walk down the corridor.

You should be disturbed, Luke.

And Kyp said it perfectly.

Great chapter! applause

Jessoass: Thanks!

The Jedi are crumbling down, I like it! devil

Without entirely meaning to, Jacen knows just which buttons to push.

Lyne: Thanks!

That's not one of Luke's brightest ideas. Now when the GAG does something awful, the Jedi's honor and integrity will be questioned.

You know that, and I know that, but somehow poor Luke just doesn't get it.

Jasa: Thanks!

Jacen is turning evil

Turning? I think he's pretty well on his way to being there.

Flowerlady: Thanks!

The Jedi really are falling apart and poor Luke is blinded by the fact he doesn't want to believe Jacen could have fallen as far as he had...

I think that's really the key issue. Luke doesn't want to see that his apprentice and nephew has fallen. So he acts like Jacen is confused, instead of realizing that his nephew is all but a Sith.

Kyppie, spot on perfect

Thanks! Even though I like Jag and Jaina together, I have always loved Kyp. He could really be one of the more interesting characters in LOTF if the writers will ever include him again.

_sticks: Thanks!

A new reader! Consider yourself added to the PM list.

G_Anakin: Thanks!

Jacen is evil

Pretty much, yeah.

PrincessCambria: Thanks!

You should be disturbed, Luke.

Should being the key word.

Thanks to everyone!
Next chapter will be up by Friday!

Great chapter, very disturbing. Why do I always like the dark ones? Kyp's comment about being disappointed...ouch. That's always the worst comment to make and I can see Luke really taking it to heart.

Can't wait for the next chapter. happy

Tell me about it rolling_eyes ...and it may come up again later in the story whistling .

Next chapter will be up soon!

P.S. Just a little reader poll: Do you think I should try to have this finished by Exile, or would is it okay to continue it even as an AU?

Sorry for the long delay. We've been traveling for Christmas, and I didn't have internet access.

Also, I've decided to go ahead and make this full length. I was debating whether to cut it down to finish before Exile, but what the heck. I'll just move it from the Speculation column to the AU column.

Chapter 7

“…Couldn’t have made it any faster!” Han practically shouted.

Leia and Jaina exchanged looks. It had been a long trip from Bilbringi to Ord Sedra. Han and Davert had spent the entire time trying to irritate the other, usually succeeding. Davert would make a remark about the Falcon, Han would say something about Imperial life, and it would keep going back and forth until either Jaina or Leia stepped in and changed the subject. Privately, Leia found the whole thing rather amusing, and she had the feeling that Jaina did too.

The trip had been good for Jaina and Leia, though. At first, Jaina had been quiet and withdrawn, preferring to meditate alone rather than interact with the others aboard the ship. Gradually, Leia was able to draw her out. For the first time in thirty-something years, they were able to sit and really talk to each other. It surprised Leia just how nervous Jaina was about seeing Jag again. The years since the Killik Crisis had given her time to think- about the end of their relationship, about her actions. She had assumed that she would never see him again. Now she had to deal with the reality of meeting him face to face.

Leia turned her attention back to Han and Davert. She had temporarily given up her co-pilots seat, as Davert had a complex series of codes he needed to enter to ensure safe passage through Imperial space. Han made sure that Davert understood that it was a very temporary position.

“We’ll be landing at the public spaceport,” Davert informed the cockpit, after a brief exchange with control.

“We will, huh? And nobody’s going to notice a few Rebels sneaking in? Or do you do this sort of thing often?” Han asked.

“If you like, we can land in the middle of a squadron of TIE fighters or on a Star Destroyer. Might provide a bit more excitement, if that’s what you’re after,” Davert replied.

“Nah. Wouldn’t want to mess up your nice spit and polish finish on the deck. Or, stars forbid, scratch the paint.”

Jaina intervened. “Seriously, Davert. Why the public spaceport? Surely Ja…Admiral Fel rates his own hangar, and the Falcon is kind of recognizable.”

“The admiral does have his own hangar, and yes the ship is recognizable,” Davert explained, almost patronizing. “That’s why we’re landing in the public spaceport. People would never think that you would be foolish enough to actually land there, in plain sight. It’s really the perfect cover.”

“Great, Han. He thinks like you do.”

Both Han and Davert swiveled to glare at Leia.

----------

It shouldn’t have been this easy for Han and Leia Solo to land on an Imperial controlled planet. Yet, after they sat the Falcon down, they encountered no problems. A ground transport was waiting to take them to the base, clearance to enter had already been granted, and within one standard hour they were waiting to see Admiral Fel.

“Captain, Princess. The admiral should be here in a moment. Why don’t we wait in his office?” suggested Colonel Davert. He entered a code and pushed open a set of large wooden doors. Motioning Han and Leia in, he moved to follow, leaving Jaina standing in the outer chamber.

“And what about me?” Jaina asked suspiciously, arms folded.

Davert hesitated.

“He doesn’t know I’m here, does he?” Jaina sighed and ran a hand over her eyes. “Great. Just great. As if this wasn’t already going to be hard enough, now I get to jump out of a closet and yell surprise.”

“Jump out of a conference room, actually.”

“Even better. Which way?”

Davert just pointed to another door leading off to the left.

Han and Leia barely had time to glance around the room before Davert joined them. It was spotless, but that was no surprise. Instead of the usual sterile look associated with Imperial bases, Jag’s office- really, the whole complex- had a much warmer tone.

Han made himself right at home. After he sat in one of the office’s two tapestry chairs, he poured himself a glass of brandy from the crystal decanter on the table between them.

“There’s something about this whole deal that I don’t get,” he said.

“I’m astonished,” Davert deadpanned.

Han ignored him completely and addressed Leia. “When we met up with Jag on Telkur Station, he had to have already been a commander in the Imp forces. Possibly already knew that he was the next head honcho. So why did he come personally and warn us? We can’t be his favorite people.”

“If I were in his shoes,” Davert said, “I would have made your shooting me down a retroactive assassination attempt and issued a warrant for you arrest.”

“Call it professional courtesy. After all, the Princess did tell me to eject.”

Admiral Fel walked into the room. He gave a slight bow in Han and Leia’s direction.

“Thank you for coming. I realize that my invitation must seem odd.”

“That’s one way of putting it,” Han mumbled.

“If you'll allow me to jump past the polite small talk, there are three distinct items of business I want to discuss with you. First, I have to ask- who in the Corellian government thought up the idea of assassinating the Queen Mother?”

“Why does it matter?” Han asked.

“It matters a great deal. If the order came from as high up as I’m afraid it did, then it will impact how we set up diplomatic relations with the Corellians. That was a huge strategic blunder.” Jag glanced at Han. “I know it wasn’t my uncle who planned the attempt. He has a better sense of strategy than that. Frankly, I thought you did too.”

For the first time since Jag entered the room, Leia spoke. “We had nothing to do with the planning. Han and I never even knew about it. We were duped into going to Hapes as cover.” She stopped for a brief second. “Did you really think that we would kill one of our children’s closest friends?”

“Judging from personal experience…” Jag started before Han cut him off.

“C’mon, kid. Aren’t you ever going to let that drop? Trust me, we are very aware of the fact that we shot you down.”

The beginnings of a smile were on Jag’s face. “Captain Solo, had Darth Vader survived the Battle of Endor, would you have ever let him forget the fact that he froze you in carbonite?”

Han was stunned silent by the question. Jag took that as an affirmative.

“I didn’t think so.”

“Great,” Han said, turning to Leia. “The kid goes Imperial, then he gets a sense of humor.”

“So you really weren’t involved in the attempt on Queen Mother Tenel Ka’s life?” Jag clarified.

“Only if trying to stop it counts,” Leia replied.

“Interesting. I had thought…This throws things into a new perspective.”

“And brings me to my second point. As you are aware, I have dissolved all ties between the Empire and the GA.”

“Yeah, I remember hearing something to that effect,” Han said sardonically.

“Then I’ll be blunt. I want your support.”

Han and Leia couldn’t speak. Davert stifled a laugh at their shocked faces. It wasn’t often that one got to see two such well-known people looking so shocked.

“Let me clarify that,” Jag said after a moment.

“That might be a good idea,” Leia responded.

“I’m not offering you a commission or a planet to rule or anything of that nature. I really don’t even want you to stay in Imperial space. Staying around the Solo family too long is hazardous to my health,” Jag said. “But I don’t think you realize just how important your politics will be in the coming days.”

Jag walked over to a holographic display in the far corner of the room. It showed the current border of every galactic government, even those in the Unknown Regions. His movement drew every eye in the room. No one noticed that the wooden doors opened a bit, enough for a single person to watch the proceedings.

“The Known Regions are at war now. This time, it’s not an outside enemy, but one from within. But those differences would not be too hard to overcome if they once again faced a common enemy. I don’t want to become that common enemy.”

He turned back toward Han and Leia. “Most of the heroes associated with the Rebels have chosen one side or the other. Luke Skywalker's words won't be taken to heart by the Corellians. Likewise, whatever my uncle says is likely to be dismissed by the Galactic Allinace. The two of you are the most famous veterans of the Rebellion not currently affiliated with either side. As such, your words and actions concerning the Empire carry a lot of weight, even with those on both sides. Your support could be the deciding factor in how far this latest war spreads.”

Leia turned and looked at Han. Never in a million years would she have bet that the Empire would come to her asking for support. She could see that even he wouldn’t have taken that bet either.

“I’ve spent my whole life fighting for a free galaxy,” Leia finally replied. “What makes you think I’d start supporting the Empire now?”

“Do you really think we’re the same Empire as Palpatine’s?” Davert chimed in. She had forgotten that he was there.

“Well, no, but…”

Jag broke in. “You say you’ve spent your life fighting for a free galaxy. Just what does that mean, exactly? Freedom from fear? With the attacks on Coruscant and the actions of the Galactic Alliance Guard, that doesn’t seem like something that the GA knows.”

“Freedom of thought? Look at the aftermath of the Corellian Vigil.”

“Freedom from want? How many planets have yet to see any help with rebuilding from a war that has been over for more than a decade?”

“A galaxy without prejudice? Not hardly.”

“Peace? It seems to me that the Empire is the only government not currently in conflict with anyone.”

With every line, the intensity in Jag’s eyes shone a little bit brighter.

“Democracy? You’ve also spent your whole life working outside the system. And how many lives could have been saved during the Vong invasion if the military had been free to act without getting tied up in a corrupt bureaucracy? And what happens when democracy is subverted by its own principles?”

That is the Empire I am trying to build. An Empire free of its past and free of the shackles of your Republics. That is what I am asking you to support.”

In that instance, Leia knew that the Empire would thrive under the leadership of Admiral Jagged Fel. There was a passion there, a drive that would see an Empire through the trying times to come. There was a charisma, a seductiveness to his vision that even she was not immune to. The pilot she had known during the Yuuzhan Vong War, the young man who had almost become her son-in-law, had been an excellent commander. But that man was gone. In his place stood a leader, one who countless beings would give their lives and souls to follow.

“I…don’t know what to say.” Leia rose to her feet. “But I don’t feel that I can, in good conscience, pledge my support.”

“Then I ask for your silence in the matter,” was Jag’s reply.

For a long moment, no one in the room spoke. Finally, Han broke the quiet, asking, “What was the third thing?”

It took Jag a minute to realize what Han was talking about. “The third?…Oh yes.”

“Tell me- Captain, Princess- what do you know about the Sith?”

-----------

Enjoy!

----------

A.N. Sorry about the cliffhanger! devil Well, not really.

There wasn't any J/J interaction in this post, because I felt that adding it in would make the post too long. I promise it'll be in the next chapter. angel
