Great chapter! I definately loved the hints that you threw in there. I can't wait to see how you throw an Emporer into the mix when Pellaeon steps down. The Empire will rise again (hah that made me think of the Revolutionary War...cause I'm from the South...and we
shall
rise again
jk )) But I really like the fact that you show the empire planning and looking ahead...it shows that they don't want to come in and pick up the inevitable pieces of the GFFA. They're sneaky!

On the catch up trail at last. I've just read the 2/13 post. Really enjoyed Jag's introspective commentary filling us in on his thoughts about Jana and Jacen. Now I'm finally reading the DN books, I'm more up with the context.
“I have little doubt the Ascendancy will need its allies more than ever after this. But Skywalker has no idea who their real friends are, does he?”
“Not a clue.”
Jag grinned. “Someday, when the Chiss are chastened and the Alliance is humbled, I’ll have to thank him on behalf of the Empire.”
Hee hee - loving the intrigue. The scene with Pellaeon was excellent.
Enjoying this a lot.

OJN
:
a not-very-innocent conversation
Whyever would you say that?
Those hints and questions raise emotional responses -- for me, at least. Some are ominous, others are hopeful.
There’s certainly a lot of ominous stuff to deal within LOTF…
Although the post-LOTF chapters should be fun. I can’t wait to write those.
I would speculate on several comments by Gilad, but you'll probably fool me anyway and I think I'd rather be surprised.
I dunno. Sometimes, like cigars, foreshadowing is just foreshadowing.
You're a proficcer in disguise... right?
Not… yet.
obsessedwithSW
:
Ditto on everything oldjednurse said!
Works for me!
Also I noticed the line about when a Jedi goes bad is a reference to our budding Darth-wanna-be.
I think Jag’s been worried about Jacen Solo since the whole Tenupe affair. Anyone who would sell out his own parents is dangerous… And I think Jag would be watching Jacen’s actions very closely.
Guess that shows the Empire's network is better connected than The GA or Jedi.
Not so much better connected, as more open-minded. The options are pretty obvious if you think about it, but the Jedi are affected by their own presuppositions and values. Just as Luke and Mara were blind to the extent of Jacen’s darkness for too long, they wouldn’t see other alternatives that were right in front of them either. But Jag and Pellaeon have no such blinders on.
Do we have Jaina in the next post? Is Jag shirtless?
Sorry, no Jaina for a couple more posts. Probably no shirtless Jag, either.
jedi_princess18
:
the way you tied together details from the books (different books) and then made them work together was amazing.
Wow, thanks!
I will say, LOTF has given me a lot to work with in this story. I don’t think Lumiya is the only one with a hidden agenda…
Although I was a little disappointed in Jag that he couldn't figure out who Pellaeon had in mind for Emperor...
Jag may have a bit of arrogance in him, but not
that
much.
Besides, Jag still perceives himself as serving his father. He wouldn’t be able to see himself as Emperor until he steps out of Soontir’s shadow.
Solo_and_Fel
:
But then I thought about it a bit and I guess it is a case of the Jedi being too close to the situation to see the whole picture. Jag, on the other hand has a bunch more perspective and distance.
Exactly. I think a major theme of LOTF is turning out to be the extent to which our attachments – to family and to our values – can become our greatest weaknesses. Luke is very wise, but he’s blind to some obvious things right in front of him, for example. Very much like the PT Jedi Masters, who for all their wisdom didn’t understand, and couldn’t figure out how to handle, Anakin or Palpatine until it was too late.
Flowerlady
:
And yet it all still fits with everything you've come up with before...that is simply wonderful writing.
Thanks!
I tried to set a lot of this up in earlier chapters. Jag certainly would prefer to be a fleet commander for the EOTH, but with Alema Rar on the loose he’s got to set that aspiration aside and “remove” the threat.
And I do think Pellaeon’s loyalty has always been to the Empire – so anything he does to benefit the NR or GA is only because it benefits the Empire.
What's more....It all makes more sense than any hints of explanation we got from the books.
Actually, I think so too.
I have some ideas about how I think the LOTF authors will play out their version of Jag’s backstory in the later books – but I think the Imperial angle has a lot of great possibility to it, too.
RedGold
:
i see where you're going here... coolies
I think I’ve probably still got a surprise or two up my sleeve, though.
Auntie
:
Wonder if Jag knows who is on the Admiral's short list for Emperor?
He will soon enough.
IceFire27
:
It's amazing that as you read the books everyone was so blinded to what was going on. At least here, some one knew there was more to the situation then meets the eye.
It’s only human nature, I think, to see the world the way we wish it was, rather than the way it really is. And it can be quite difficult to get past our preconceptions about things, too. That’s why an outside perspective, with some emotional distance, is always helpful in providing insight.
lurker2209
:
When I think about it, it doesn't strike me as so strange that Jag wouldn't see himself as candidate for Emperor. It's a pretty heady title, and I think he sees himself as more of a military guy.
Yep. Jag has spent his whole career serving under the command of others. Even now that he’s near the top of the ranks, he’s still not very accustomed to being the one in charge. He has to get there before he could start seeing himself as Emperor material.
But I think he'll eventually be convinced!
Well, Jag certainly has a streak of that, “if it’s got to be done right, do it yourself” mentality…
Jedi_Vai
: Thanks!
ChissGoddess
:
I can't wait to see how you throw an Emporer into the mix when Pellaeon steps down.
It might not be right away… Which could be part of the problem…
it shows that they don't want to come in and pick up the inevitable pieces of the GFFA. They're sneaky!
Pellaeon didn’t serve alongside Thrawn all those years without picking up a few tricks – and some insight into strategy and tactics for the long haul as well as the immediate battles in front of you.
Conquering the GA and ruling the galaxy right now isn’t even on the table. The Empire just doesn’t have the resources. But waiting for the GA to implode itself, that’s another idea entirely…
Tahi
:
On the catch up trail at last.
Good to see you back!
Hee hee - loving the intrigue. The scene with Pellaeon was excellent.
When I started writing this, I had no idea just how much fun the scenes with Jag and Pellaeon would turn out to be. But there’s such an interesting dynamic between the two of them, it’s turned out great.
Thanks again for all the feedback, everyone!
Due to a crazy weekend and a bit of DRL, the next chapter won’t be up today.
But check back on Thursday for

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 8th!!
Lemme first state that it's quite a big thing for me to read a Star Wars fic that doesn't star Luke as the main character as I am one of
those
readers. But I do happen to have a soft spot in my heart for Jag and I've always thought that his character had so much potential. It's a shame it's rarely utilized and I was pretty happy to see a Jag centered fic, especially a Jag fic that's doesn't have Jaina chained to him. I'm not a particular fan of J/J and I actually believe her personality tends to over shadow his, so I was glad to see that you chose not to go down that particular route. If sometime in the future you do write J/J together, I trust you'll do it wonderfully as your writing has been superb thus far.
I'm very interested in reading your speculation. It's always been a big stretch for me to believe that the Empire could rise again in the Legacy series, especially led by the Fels, but your fic is certainly showing possibilities. I hope to see an update soon, looking forward to it

I agree.
Of course, that’s probably obvious since I’m writing a fic where he becomes the first Fel emperor.
Seriously, though, I’m delighted that my Jag fic lured you away from Luke, if only for a bit.
especially a Jag fic that's doesn't have Jaina chained to him. I'm not a particular fan of J/J and I actually believe her personality tends to over shadow his
When written well, I think Jag holds his own with Jaina.
She certainly is a strong personality, though, regardless of who she’s on a mission with (or ‘shipped with) – and that’s a challenge for any man in her life. Personally, for example, I think in DN and LOTF so far Zekk has shown a lot less independent personality and willingness to stand up to Jaina than Jag did during the NJO (or in DN for that matter). For J/J to work, in-universe or for the readers, Jag has to be a strong personality of his own to match hers; much like, say, Han/Leia or Luke/Mara.
If sometime in the future you do write J/J together, I trust you'll do it wonderfully as your writing has been superb thus far.
Thanks!
Well, Jaina will be showing up again in TMOAE shortly.
But this is ultimately the story of Jag and his rise to become Emperor, so I have to make J/J work in the context of that.
It's always been a big stretch for me to believe that the Empire could rise again in the Legacy series, especially led by the Fels, but your fic is certainly showing possibilities.
Definitely more answers about that before this story is over.

CHAPTER TEN
40 ABY, three days before the failed assassination attempt at Hapes
Imperial Star Destroyer
Chimaera
, in transit
When Jag descended the boarding ramp of his shuttle, Grand Admiral Pellaeon was waiting. He had no guards; they were alone in the hangar bay. The two men saluted crisply, then began walking across the smooth, polished floor. Jag made an effort to keep his strides slower than usual, letting the old man set the pace.
“I am glad we were able to cross paths before your return to Bastion,” Jag said.
“As am I,” Pellaeon replied. “We have much to discuss.”
That was an understatement. In the month since their previous meeting on Coruscant, the crisis between Corellia and the Galactic Alliance had spiraled out of control. “Well, you were right about one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“It didn’t take long for the GA to give you a reason to resign.”
Pellaeon chuckled. “No, it certainly didn’t.” He shook his head. “I don’t know which is the bigger disaster – creating the Galactic Alliance Guard, or promoting that crazy fish Niathal to Supreme Commander.”
“As long as Omas and the Senate feel the need to rein in the scope of the conflict, there is only so much Niathal can do to escalate a war. A blockade certainly seems a far less aggressive measure than she would have preferred.”
“No doubt about that. Still, it is far too easy to outflank the politicians. Even in a blockade, the situation can be manipulated to produce a shooting match.”
“Perhaps it already has,” Jag said.
Ten days earlier an Atzerri freighter had attempted to run the GA blockade. The result had been its destruction – by Jacen Solo, personally. Now Atzerri, along with Bothawui, Commenor, and others, were threatening to join the Corellians. All based on the pretext of the GA’s continuing aggression in the conflict.
Pellaeon glanced over. “You’re referring to the incident that led to the court-martial of Jaina Solo by her brother.”
“Yes.”
“And what is your opinion of the matter?”
Jag paused, collecting his thoughts. “I’ve seen the recordings of the firefight. Given its apparent armament, the freighter was a continuing threat even though it had moved to retreat. Assuming standard rules of engagement, the order to fire was not improper.” He frowned. “Which is why, I imagine, she chose not to contest the charge and resigned her commission.”
“It doesn’t sound very much like a Solo,” Pellaeon said thoughtfully, “to give up on her defense without a fight.”
“No,” Jag conceded. “But I think I see her dilemma. She has no defense under the rules of engagement, because the order was technically lawful. But it’s an order that shouldn’t have been given. Firing on the freighter was unnecessary – and excessive.” He sighed. “And that is an argument she can’t win, even if it did not involve condemning the military judgment and morality of her own twin brother.”
They reached the turbolift bank on the wall of the hangar bay. Pellaeon tapped in a security code and the door swished open. Once they were inside, he selected the stateroom level.
“If she needs any help with condemnations,” Pellaeon said, turning back to Jag, “she should give me a call. Her brother is a menace.”
“There are rumblings on the Holonet,” Jag said quietly, “comparing him to his grandfather.”
“I remember the
real
Darth Vader, and young Colonel Solo has a long way to go before he’s worthy of any such comparisons.” Pellaeon shook his head. “Still, he is already well on his way to making himself a petty little tyrant.”
Jag nodded. “The emergency measures by Chief Omas weren’t unexpected, but I never thought I’d see GA forces carrying out internment. Or some of the other things the Guard has done.”
“I agree.”
“Which explains the other rumblings – comparing all these new measures to the Empire.”
“Indeed.” Pellaeon’s scowl was sharp. “To the worst abuses of
Palpatine’s
reign. That is a tarnished legacy the new Empires – Bastion, and the Hand – will be fighting to overcome for generations. For now, we can only do our part. Such as my resignation.”
“Yes.”
Jag understood the problem all too well. It was the primary reason why, after the withdrawal following Ithor, he always had emphasized his involvement with the Ascendancy and CEDF during the Yuuzhan Vong war. Everyone in the Known Regions believed he served the Chiss; no one had ever learned that he truly had been serving the Empire of the Hand all along. No one – not even Jaina.
“Now that there is state of war proclaimed by both sides,” Jag added, “we’ll wait and see who makes the first move.”
The turbolift slowed to a stop, and the door slid open. Pellaeon motioned Jag ahead, then followed him into the ornately decorated corridor. For a moment they stood in place.
“Whoever it is,” Pellaeon said, “it
won’t
be the Empire. Even if I spend all my time in the coming weeks browbeating Moffs to ensure it.”
“That,” Jag said with a sly grin, “doesn’t sound particular fun.”
Pellaeon grinned back. “It is in its own way, I suppose. But if I were a younger man, I would much prefer to be in your place rather than mine.” Then he indicated down the corridor. “You have time to join me for dinner? With no talk of politics?”
“For you and for that,” Jag said, sincerely, “I would always
make
time.”
********
40 ABY, the following day
Heavily modified shuttle
Wampa’s Claw
, near Anaxes
The communications array ran a last diagnostic, then beeped to indicate its readiness to initiate the encrypted transmission. Jag confirmed the access codes a final time, then activated the signal. While he waited, he pondered whether reaching out to this particular contact was the right decision. There were risks, certainly. And there probably were other, less risky, ways of finding out the information he needed. But no other method would be as efficient – and right now, time wasn’t on Jag’s side. If only he didn’t have such a bad feeling about this…
Bweep.
The tone startled Jag back into focus. He had expected to wait considerably longer. In fact, he’d expected he would have to leave a message and hope to hear back. Instead, his call apparently was about to be answered.
The face that materialized on the viewscreen was familiar, and yet… a stranger.
“What do you want?” the man growled.
Yes, I’m still alive. Thanks for asking. Nice to see you again, too, Jacen.
“To call in a favor.” Jag forced a smile to his face. “Don’t worry, only a small one.”
“A favor?”
“As you may recall, I kept my end of the bargain at Tenupe. Your parents’ mission never took place, and the Chiss did them no harm.”
Glancing away, Jacen furrowed his brow. He said nothing.
“After which, I might point out, they shot me down.”
“Yes, well, sorry about that.” Finally he looked back at Jag. “So. What is this favor you need?”
“I need to know where your parents are.”
Without hesitation Jacen asked, “You’re going to kill them?”
It took all of Jag’s mental strength to keep his face composed and his voice level. He’d known Jacen Solo was losing it, but… That question was pure madness. “Uh, no. I have information I need to provide to them. Personally.”
“What kind of information?”
Briefly Jag considered whether he should tell Jacen about the threat posed by Alema Rar. After all, Jacen was on the target list, too. The knot in his gut stopped him. “I’m not at liberty to disclose that at the moment, Colonel.”
Jacen scowled. Then he asked, “Does this have something to do with Jaina?”
“No. If it did, I would be trying to contact
her
.”
“Well, I thought you might prefer not to talk to her directly, so –”
“I’m a professional, Jacen, and this is business. If I have business with your sister, she’ll be the first to know. This is about your parents.”
“All right, then.” Jacen’s frown deepened. “I’d help you if I could, but I don’t know where they are. As you no doubt are aware, they’re on the Corellian side.”
He hadn’t used the word
traitors
, but it dripped in his cold voice. Jag suppressed a shudder. “I’ve heard that, yes.”
“So they’re probably on Corellia,” Jacen explained, his voice thick with black sarcasm.
Jag refused to rise to the derision. “Yes, I had deduced that possibility, but running a GA blockade isn’t exactly at the top of my agenda right now. Surely, though, your strategists have made predictions of what Corellia’s
next
move is going to be.”
“What makes you think I’ve seen any such speculation, if it even exists?”
“I would have thought,” Jag said, returning the sarcasm just as icily, “the leader of the Galactic Alliance Guard would be at the top of the list to receive such analysis.”
Jacen glared, but tipped his head. “You didn’t get this from me.”
“Of course not.” Jag flashed an innocent smile. “I
can
keep a secret.”
“You’d better.” Jacen glanced down. “Sending it now.”
A moment later Jag’s communications console beeped. “Received.”
“Is there anything else?”
Watch your back
was the only thing Jag was tempted to say. Instead he replied, “No.”
Without a farewell, Jacen Solo closed the feed.
“Nice guy,” Jag muttered.
He called up the document Jacen had transmitted. The GA military communiqué was short, and only took him a few minutes to read. It was the GA’s best analysis – from Admiral Bwua’tu himself, no less. At first its prediction seemed crazy, but Jag couldn’t argue with the reasoning. Bwua’tu was right about Corellia’s next move – and everything Jag knew about Han and Leia Solo said they would be right there in the middle of it.
Now he had to hope the Solos would take his warning about Alema Rar seriously. Before this whole crisis had exploded, Jag could do reconnaissance on Alema while she did surveillance on the Solos. The element of surprise was his, because she didn’t know he was there, waiting to strike the moment she left herself vulnerable. With the Solos and Skywalkers spread across the galaxy, though, the advantage had shifted. Now they were the vulnerable ones, unprepared for an assassination attempt they didn’t know was coming.
Jag could change those odds with a single move of his own, though – a simple warning. Once they were on the lookout for her, the Solos would have the advantage over Alema. True, he would rather kill the crazy Twi’lek himself after all the trouble she had caused these last five years. But if the Solos could manage to take her out, well, Jag wasn’t going to complain. As long as they really did kill her this time.
Besides, he knew the Solos. They were already bothered by their guilt for shooting him down over Tenupe. Add the warning about Alema on top of that, and they were really going to feel they owed him something. That would be useful later, one way or another.
Not to mention, right now Han and Leia didn’t even know Jag was still alive. And he certainly wasn’t worried about Jacen saying anything to them in the meantime. Yes, he sure couldn’t wait to see the looks on their faces. Too bad he couldn’t bring along a holocam to record the moment for posterity.
Jag set his destination for the Hapes Cluster, and jumped to hyperspace.

Hm... I thought I replied - guess I didn't.
Another great update. I'm a bit behind in my reading, but I know enough of the novels to keep up to speed - especially when you take such care to connect everything. It's interesting to me to see Jag's emotional shift when it comes to Jaina. Not even 3 posts ago, he couldn't think about her without being filled with frustration and rage - now there is just calm... acceptance perhaps?
And I love to see Jag and Pallaeon interact. Pallaeon was the first Imperial I actually liked - to see the relationship you have developed here between the two is perfect.
Thanks for the update. Can't wait for next week!

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 15th!!
Hi! I'm new here and thought I would comment on how much I like this. If there's a PM list for updates, I'd like to be on it. If not, I guess I will just have to keep an eye open.
The whole idea of Jag as an agent of the Empire of the Hand as opposed to the Chiss really works for me. The EOTH is basically perfect for him - innovative, secretive, and strict, without an excess of bureaucracy. The only thing I find problematic about it is that it may lessen the tension between Jag and Jaina with regards to his isolation from his family. (I am such a sucker for angst.
No wonder I can't stop reading SW, even though they keep on destroying my favourite characters.)
Jacen is a sneaky little bastard and I'd really like to see him get what's coming to him - in fanfic or in profic; I'm not picky. I really like the way you have him knowing Jag is alive and communicating with him. It both shows how secretive and cloak-and-dagger he's become - very different from the boy he once was - and how easily he lets his own agenda blind him. Creepy, but good. And I like that Jag sees that it's often Jacen's fault he gets screwed over (although again with the lessening of the J/J tension. Apparently you can't have your cake and eat it too).
And as much as I like Jag, I have to admit, I like Pellaeon almost as much. He was cool as a villain and he's even better as a good guy, which is rare.
Anyway! Good job, and keep it coming!

“I have a bad feeling about this,” Jag warned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Wedge grinned. "Are you kidding? That's the sign that things are finally going right!"

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 15th!!
Chapter 8:
“I could get in a lot of trouble with the Galactic Alliance for selling a Star Destroyer, especially one as new and fully operational as the Peerless.”
Holy Sith!
The Alliance is certainly going to notice that missing.
Like the name, by the way
Tibbix shook his head. “You’re ex-military, maybe. But no respectable government would ever hire someone like you.” He pulled his briefcase off the table and stood, false courage in his bearing. “I think you’re a bounty hunter.”
Tibbix has a copy of Tempest
Jag turned on his heel and headed toward the freighter’s cabins. His father would be pleased to hear that this transaction had been successful, just like the ones before it. In the past six months, Jag’s clandestine operation had acquired five new Star Destroyers for the fleet, along with an impressive collection of frigates and cruisers. With its starfighter factories already exceeding prewar levels of production, the Empire of the Hand was well on its way to once again possessing one of the largest single armadas in the galaxy. One that would be larger by far than the Remnant’s, and rival those of the most powerful systems, like the Corellians or Hapans.
Where are they finding the money to buy these ships?
Skullduggery
Great word
Jag sat down at the communications console in his cabin, and smiled. Yes, it would definitely be good to be back at Central Command.
Then, finally, he could shave.
Eighteen hours. That had been a serious mistake. Even allowing time for the bureaucratic labyrinth of the CEDF and the Four Families, there was no doubt the Chiss had intentionally delayed informing him. They weren’t going to like the consequences of their dilatory conduct at all. But that was for later, too.
“Effective immediately,” he said, “the CEDF is ordered to withdraw from any and all involvement in this matter. Is that understood?”
“But Admiral –”
“I’m sending the 501st Legion to Tenupe, Aristocra. There had better not be a blue face in sight when they get there.”
If he only knew! I wonder if they'll assume the hive is operational again
The Twi’lek shook his head. “Only a trained scholar could make a thorough and proper recounting. But I can read enough. Again and again –” he pointed to links in the cord “– she mentions her hatred of Leia Solo.”
“I’m sorry, sir,” the trooper said. “But she is clearly mad, and plotting revenge. She intends to murder Leia Solo – and her entire family.”
Someone has to keep the balance...
Terrifice post,
Lex
Interesting the way you worked in the memory cord and Alema Rar's survival. Cool seeing the buildup of the Empire of the Hand too
I'll try and catch up completely by tomorrow

It's interesting to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that Jag had a hidden agenda when he talked to Han and Leia. Although I think that he's taking another step down the road that Palleon has mapped out for the new Emperor.
As always another amazing chapter Lex. Can't wait untill next week.

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 15th!!
“I am glad we were able to cross paths before your return to Bastion,” Jag said.
“As am I,” Pellaeon replied. “We have much to discuss.”
The master and the apprentice. Ah, yes.
“And what is your opinion of the matter?”
Jag always has a thoughtful opinion, even where Jaina is concerned. So cool.
Jag paused, collecting his thoughts. “I’ve seen the recordings of the firefight…
About a billion times, you disinterested ex-boyfriend.
“If she needs any help with condemnations,” Pellaeon said, turning back to Jag, “she should give me a call. Her brother is a menace.”
Gotta love Gilad! (I do!)
Jag understood the problem all too well…Everyone in the Known Regions believed he served the Chiss; no one had ever learned that he truly had been serving the Empire of the Hand all along. No one – not even Jaina.
Liar, liar, pants on fire…
“You have time to join me for dinner? With no talk of politics?”
“For you and for that,” Jag said, sincerely, “I would always make time.”
Jag, you’re being groomed for a relatively rapid succession—if I’m not mistaken—whether you realize it yet or not.
Yes, I’m still alive. Thanks for asking. Nice to see you again, too, Jacen.
Sarcasm? Why, Jag, wherever did you learn that?
Jag has to feel just a little like he's in league with the devil. Better on his "good" side than his "bad", I suppose. If there is such a thing with Jacen. Love the way you've painted Jacen as the traitorous, untrustworthy, Sith-wannabe he seems to be.
“A favor?” … Glancing away, Jacen furrowed his brow. He said nothing…Finally he looked back at Jag. “So. What is this favor you need?”
Gilad, you’re right. Jacen is still “…well on his way to making himself a petty little tyrant” but not yet worthy of Vader comparisons. If he had reached
that
level, his answer would have been, “Pray that I do not alter (our deal) further…”.
Without hesitation Jacen asked, “You’re going to kill them?”
A wee bit touchy, there, Jace. He is so uncomfortable in his own skin these days, and apparently assumes that everyone else is as messed up as he is.
Without a farewell, Jacen Solo closed the feed.
Your mother would be appalled at your manners young man!
Loved the way you drew a straight line from Jag’s involvement with Jacen to Jag finding Han and Leia. Very well done!
Just another fabulous chapter… all in a day’s work, huh?
Terrific chapter,
Lex
