Interesting seeing Jag use his anger towards Jaina to fool Han and Leia, and later Luke and Mara. But I don't think Jag is really as detached from his emotions as he thinks he is.
I love the idea of the Empire of the Hand having a secret base of operations on Coruscant. And I think if everyone knew that Jag wasn't quite the exile he said he was, they'd be a bit more skeptical. If there's anyone the Solo's and Skywalkers are perhaps too quick to trust, it's a renegade. But then so much of the evil they've faced over the years has been bureaucratic. It's a weakness that makes sense, and it's very clever of Jag to exploit it.

Haven't read Exile yet, although I've got it sitting on my desk. I suddenly feel more compelled to read it knowing that Jag's going to figure in it
Despite my reservations about Jag and Jaina, I'm looking forward to the inevitable confrontation with these two and what effect just speaking with her will have on him. Poor, poor Jag.

Not sure I really enjoy Jag using the Skywalkers so much...but I do think his motives are for the greater good. I do love Soontir in "the match making" dad mode!

Another great post featuring Sneaky!Fel.
Chapter Thirteen (during Exile) next week… Jag and Jaina, but probably not what you expect…
Then I do NOT expect them to be making out in a conference room somewhere.

And I was impressed before.” Soontir shook his head, amazed. “You arranged for a leader of the Rebellion to install Imperial tracking technology on Galactic Alliance systems. You know how much confidence I have in you, son, but I’m not sure I’d have thought that was possible.”
“To be fair,” Jag said, spreading his hands, “I didn’t present it to him in quite those terms.”
“Nonetheless, it is no small accomplishment. You obviously have earned their trust, if they were willing to grant your request with so little skepticism. Especially considering they haven’t spoken to you, much less seen you in person, in years.”
Jag nodded. “The memory shock device was a helpful diversion in that regard, I think. Its effectiveness is immediately apparent, and it lent instant credibility to the extent of my investment in the hunt.”
“I’ll give you credit, Jagged,” his father said. “When you perpetrate a charade, you go all out.”
Ok Lex I like Jag but this kind of gave me the creeps. You know I dont like people who would hurt the Skywalkers even if it wasnt purposeful. The whole stuff about the false reasoning for the security feeds makes me uncomfortable.

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 27th!!
Jagged Fel tapped the security code into the wall panel and the door slid open. With a quick glance over his shoulder, he stepped inside the clandestine Coruscant operational base of the entity known as the Empire of the Hand.
Bond… James Bond.
No new messages. Not even from his sister Wyn, who was stuck in the medward after breaking her leg in a particularly vicious game of smashball…“Must not be as bored today,” Jag said under his breath.
Great portrayal of Wyn! This says a lot about her personality. She’s a Fel, alright.
Soontir laughed. “The Jedi providing you resources? If they only knew.”
Gotta love the Fel boys: great foils for the rest of the SW regulars.
“And I was impressed before.” Soontir shook his head, amazed. “You arranged for a leader of the Rebellion to install Imperial tracking technology on Galactic Alliance systems. You know how much confidence I have in you, son, but I’m not sure I’d have thought that was possible.”
Well, when you put it
that
way… quite an accomplishment indeed. And just a tad scary.
“I’ll give you credit, Jagged,” his father said. “When you perpetrate a charade, you go all out.”
The question is, just how much of Jag’s life right now is a masquerade? How far is he willing to play this thing? Excellent POV.
Soontir acknowledged the request with a tip of his head. “You think she may be a former agent of the Emperor, just as Gilad predicted.”
Soontir and Gilad: always a lovely combination.
“Speaking of working closely with the Skywalkers – it is inevitable, now, that you will see Jaina again soon, don’t you think?”
Jag, your father is a bit of a buttinsky.
Soontir chuckled. “You’re a smart man, Jagged. You’ll figure it out.”
I sincerely hope so!
Two simple questions. Just her having asked them answered a few of his own – and raised so many more. This was going to be complicated. Very complicated.
“Great,” Jag muttered, rising to his feet. “Just what I need.”
Ah-HAH!!
The exchange between Soontir and Jag was terrific. I particularly love the sense of humor you’ve brought out in Soontir since this fic began.
I wasn’t expecting such a beautifully organized clandestine operation—although I probably should have. There’s something about profic's poor-and-homeless-Jag situation that doesn’t ring true. Your resolution of that here seems very
right
.
Your writing is so full of wonderful details that say so much. I really enjoyed this, as always.

They were soldiers and professionals. This was business.
Nothing more.

Loved the chapter. I kept waiting for Soontir to bring Jaina up. Looking forward to the next chapter.

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post March 27th!!
Maybe convincing Han and Leia wouldn’t have been so hard, though. After all, deceiving them had been easy enough.
Jag shook his head. He had been worried that lying to the Solos would be all but impossible. Between Han’s smuggler’s skepticism and Leia’s Jedi talents, he had feared they would see right through his deceptions. Instead, they seemed to have accepted everything he told them at face value. It almost had been too easy.
In a funny way it all made sense. If you were careful not to betray your emotions and told a story that fit with their preconceived notions, Jedi were just as easy to lie to as anybody else. Especially when they were off-balance before you ever started talking.
This is a good point, and it shows how no Jedi is infallible or unfoolable. They are still human after all.
I'm enjoying getting into Jag's thinking - it's enlightening for me, not having always taken as much note of Jag as I could have. And I loved the whole "stags in the paddock" view of Zekk.
Such boys!
Last chapter:
“That’s not even the half of it. To facilitate the hunt, Luke Skywalker agreed to install the surveillance program in as many applicable locations as possible.”
Soontir gaped.
“Yes,” Jag said with a sly grin, “you heard that right.”
“And I was impressed before.” Soontir shook his head, amazed. “You arranged for a leader of the Rebellion to install Imperial tracking technology on Galactic Alliance systems. You know how much confidence I have in you, son, but I’m not sure I’d have thought that was possible.”
“To be fair,” Jag said, spreading his hands, “I didn’t present it to him in quite those terms.”
Oooh, you tricky lad, Jag! I'm impressed.
ojn
is spot on with her Bond parallel.
“I’ll give you credit, Jagged,” his father said. “When you perpetrate a charade, you go all out.”
Well, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.
“Speaking of working closely with the Skywalkers – it is inevitable, now, that you will see Jaina again soon, don’t you think?”
Jag kept his face unreadable. Right now he didn’t want to tell his father that he already had crossed paths with Jaina, if only for a few seconds. He didn’t want to talk about it. Right now he didn’t even want to think about it. So he said, “I suppose it is.”
Oooh - I want to know more about this. You're keeping us in the dark aren't you? LOL
“Were you just going to walk past? Not even say hello?”
Two simple questions. Just her having asked them answered a few of his own – and raised so many more. This was going to be complicated. Very complicated.
“Great,” Jag muttered, rising to his feet. “Just what I need.”
Okay - well not completely in the dark, but still . . . it does sound like a potential distraction Jag could do without.
Really enjoyed these two chapters.

Flowerlady
:
I really love this cloak and dagger version of Jag
Me too.
The grumpy, bitter, exiled scoundrel Jag from Tempest and Exile is a neat twist on his character, too. With only one scene from Jag’s POV in Exile, and a very craftily written one at that, I’m still not convinced Jag’s explanation is the truth…
I guess we’ll see as LOTF develops, though. And in the meantime, the ambiguity gives me lots of room to work with my alternative EOTH secret agent Jag in this story.
Chimpo

Great read
Thanks!
I have a feeling you’ll like the next chapter even more.

Jag is so sneaky and cool...
He gets it from his dad.
lurker2209
:
But I don't think Jag is really as detached from his emotions as he thinks he is.
Is anyone?
Jag can convince himself rather easily when it’s just fooling others. How he reacts to being around Jaina again is a different issue entirely.
And I think if everyone knew that Jag wasn't quite the exile he said he was, they'd be a bit more skeptical.
Especially when you combine that with the fact that what he’s hiding is Imperial. If he weren’t in exile but were working for somebody else, he might be able to tell them the truth without risking too much skepticism. But not the Empire.
If there's anyone the Solos and Skywalkers are perhaps too quick to trust, it's a renegade. But then so much of the evil they've faced over the years has been bureaucratic. It's a weakness that makes sense, and it's very clever of Jag to exploit it.
I’m glad you agree.
The events of LOTF itself are only reinforcing that dynamic for the Solos and Skywalkers. They get help from renegades like Boba Fett, Aurra Sing, and Uran Lavint – and government types like Thrackan, Niathal, and Jacen and his GAG are the menaces they need to stop (when they’re not on the run from them).

Aaron’s always written a great Jag.
Jag gets some classic moments and lines in Exile, for sure.
Despite my reservations about Jag and Jaina, I'm looking forward to the inevitable confrontation with these two and what effect just speaking with her will have on him. Poor, poor Jag.
I’m going to defer to Exile on the initial encounters, but there’s still plenty there for me to play around with in TMOAE.
Auntie
:
Not sure I really enjoy Jag using the Skywalkers so much...but I do think his motives are for the greater good.
Turnabout is fair play, I think. The Skywalkers and Solos have kept more than their share of secrets over the years when it suited them – usually when they decided that other Jedi or the New Republic government weren’t “ready” for the information. For example, Luke and Mara told almost no one about the Hand of Thrawn and the Nirauan base when they returned after VOTF. They believed knowledge of the EOTH and its assets would provoke a crisis within the NR, possibly within the Remnant as well, and could even lead to war – so they kept it quiet. For the greater good.
Solo_and_Fel
:
Then I do NOT expect them to be making out in a conference room somewhere.
Well played.
obsessedwithSW
:
You know I dont like people who would hurt the Skywalkers even if it wasnt purposeful. The whole stuff about the false reasoning for the security feeds makes me uncomfortable.
I don’t think Jag is hurting the Skywalkers here; his motives are genuine. He needs the surveillance program installed to catch Alema Rar, and it’s better for everyone if they catch her sooner rather than later. And of course Jag’s prediction turns out to be correct – it’s his program that identifies Alema on the
Errant Venture
and enables the whole gang to almost catch her. So getting the program installed was a big help. The problem, though, is that if Jag tells the Skywalker it’s a modified version of an old ISB program once used to track (and murder) Rebel agents, they’d never agree to install it. Not because it wouldn’t work, or because they don’t trust Jag, but because of their own emotional reactions. So Jag just omits the whole Imperial connection part, and everybody wins.
OJN
:
Gotta love the Fel boys: great foils for the rest of the SW regulars.
Definitely.
The question is, just how much of Jag’s life right now is a masquerade? How far is he willing to play this thing? Excellent POV.
The short answer, presumably, is that he’ll play it at least until they eliminate Alema Rar. That’s his mission, and he’s going to carry it out. Once that’s successful, he’d have to make a choice. Return to the EOTH, mission accomplished? Or stay to help with the Corellian conflict, the Sith (Lumiya and Jacen), or both? Some of that depends on how quickly they eliminate Alema and how badly the rest explodes in the meantime. The rest depends on where things go with Jaina.
Jag, your father is a bit of a buttinsky.
Just a bit.
There’s something about profic's poor-and-homeless-Jag situation that doesn’t ring true.
I agree.
He claims to have few resources, but he has a customized tracking program for holocams and a customized zapping device to safeguard short-term memory. He claims to be hunting Alema Rar, but he seems well informed about the nature of a Sith threat (as it relates to the Sword of the Jedi prophecy) and the trajectory of the Corellian crisis (great minds thinking alike with Wedge in the planning session on the
Errant Venture
). He may be telling partly the truth, even mostly the truth, but the pieces just don’t quiet add up…

Yes, the crossing paths for only a few seconds, and Jaina’s questions, are taken directly from the early pages of Exile.
As for Jaina The Distraction… You’ll have to wait and see in the next post.

:
Too bad Jaina's going to screw up his plans in one way or another You know, like a baby
It might be a little early for that! But it’s safe to assume things won’t go according to plan for Jag now that Jaina’s back in his life.
Thanks again for all your great feedback, everyone!

....
*awesome*, *incredible*, *amazing* story!
My confession is that I stopped reading SW after Destiny's Way because, well, ugh, and partly because of school (Chem major=bad) and then I wandered in while I was avoiding homework and here I am! So now I think I shall have to get caught up on everything...
The whole thing is just so... Imperial. I mean, you do have to figure that they have, and always will have, their own agenda. And that's part of what makes them so cool. People seem to have aged a lot though, that takes some getting used to. You'd think Han and Leia would like, retire, or something...
Anyway, I'm really enjoying this! Wonderful stuff!
