IceFire27: Will you forgive me?
Sure. wink

I really enjoyed the talk between Jag and Soontir.
Those two really have been a lot of fun for me to write. cool And Soontir knows a thing or two about being madly in love on someone. love

Shinar: Complications for characters can mean fun for readers
laugh Very true!

_Tenel_Ka_: *awesome*, *incredible*, *amazing* story!
Thanks! grin

I wandered in while I was avoiding homework and here I am!
Welcome back, then. cool There’s a lot of good stuff, fanfic and profic, worth catching up on, IMO. wink

The whole thing is just so... Imperial. I mean, you do have to figure that they have, and always will have, their own agenda. And that's part of what makes them so cool.
Exactly. devil Once you get evil masterminds like Palpatine (and Thrawn, to a lesser extent) out of the picture, and put good people like Pellaeon or the Fels in charge, the Imps are a pretty cool power to be reckoned with. mischief

You'd think Han and Leia would like, retire, or something...
I blame their kids. If they had some grandchildren to play with, they wouldn’t still be gallivanting all over the galaxy on dangerous missions. laugh Okay, they probably still would – but not as many. tongue

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone! grin

New post momentarily! dancing

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

40 ABY, several days before the Battle of Gilatter VIII
Hangar bay, Galactic Alliance reconnaissance cruiser

The mission was simple enough: fly reconnaissance to monitor all arrivals and departures from the system. That alone was likely to be uneventful. Even if he did observe something noteworthy, the overall operation was too delicate to permit him to intervene directly. Instead, he would report his findings for further analysis.

It wasn’t exactly the most challenging mission Jag had ever flown. But it did involve the opportunity to fly one of the starfighters that had been the biggest opposing threat during the Killik war: a Stealth-modified Jedi X-wing.

Considering Jaina had nearly shot Jag down from a StealthX, there was no small irony in the fact he was now going to fly one – hers specifically, no less. Life was funny that way sometimes. Jag shook his head and bounded up the ladder. Bracing one hand on the open edge of the cockpit, he sprang into a smooth arc that landed him cleanly in the empty pilot’s seat.

Behind him, the astromech whistled a greeting.

“Hello there,” Jag said.

“Hello yourself.”

Jag nearly flew back out of the seat. Instead he turned his head to look at Jaina, who stood on the top rung of the boarding ladder. It was strange to see her towering over him. “Don’t do that.”

She grinned. “Do what?”

“Sneak up on me. I might have shot you.”

She peered down into the cockpit. “You’re not wearing a blaster.”

He glowered. “That’s not the point.”

Jaina shrugged. “No sign of Alema, I take it?”

“No,” Jag replied, blinking at the abrupt change of subject. “Not a single glimpse of her anywhere since the Errant Venture. But she’s nearby.”

Jaina looked confused. She knew he couldn’t sense that in the Force.

“Her targets are all here,” Jag pointed out before she could say anything. “So she’s here, too.”

“That’s what I figured,” Jaina said, nodding. She looked firmly into his eyes. “You’ve gotten very good at diagnosing and assessing threats.”

He held her gaze unflinchingly. “I’ve had practice against the best.”

For a long moment a look of profound, heart-rending sadness flickered across her face. He was referring primarily to opposing forces from the Killik war – the Galactic Alliance, Bwua’tu, the Jedi, the Dark Nest, even Jaina herself – and to his recent hunt for Alema Rar. But they both knew the biggest threats in the galaxy right now weren’t the Corellians and their allies, or the war they had incited.

A few weeks ago a Dark Lady of the Sith named Lumiya had nearly killed Luke Skywalker at Roqoo Depot in the Hapes Cluster. Over the past two and a half months, Jaina’s brother Jacen had been falling further and deeper to the dark side of the Force, leading his Galactic Alliance Guard in acts of oppression that reminded everyone except himself of the evil tyrant that had been his grandfather.

Although nobody in the family said it aloud, at least around him, Jag was certain everyone had their moments when they wondered if those two facts weren’t a coincidence. In Jaina’s eyes, he saw that she never stopped wondering that any more. Jag’s words haunted her. The Sword of the Jedi as a weapon against the Sith. Against her own twin brother?

Abruptly the look was gone as quickly as it had arrived, and Jaina smiled. “I’m glad we’re on the same side this time.”

She wasn’t just talking about Alema. “Me too,” Jag said, and meant it. “By the way, why exactly are you here?”

“Oh. Right.” Jaina laughed, a chagrined curl to her lips. “I wanted to give you a few tips before you fly off in my ship.”

“Ten hours in the simulator wasn’t enough? Not to mention all the time I’ve logged in X-wings in the past. I think I’ve got it all under control, Jaina.”

“It’s not that I don’t trust you,” she insisted, dropping to a knee on the ladder and leaning into the cockpit, “but a few of the systems are a little quirky right now.”

“Your fighter?” he asked with mock astonishment. “Quirky?”

“Funny guy,” Jaina said. Her face was only centimeters from his. “Watch out for the port stabilizers, they’ve got a short lag sometimes.” Then she pointed to a pair of switches. “I leave it set to lasers. The switch for the torps is sticky, you might have to double-click it. Or give it a good smack.”

“All right,” he said. Her shoulder was brushing his. Her hair, tied back in a ponytail, held the sweet aroma of Corellian roses. Jag nearly squirmed, but managed not to.

She glanced back at him, oblivious. “Oh, and I think the high end of the inertial compensator might not be working. It was giving me a little trouble, but I usually fly at ninety anyway so I haven’t really gotten it checked.”

He nodded. “Ninety’s fine – especially for what I’ll be doing.”

“True.” Jaina eased herself up and away from him. She sat on her haunches on the top rung of the ladder, and crossed her arms atop the edge of the cockpit. “So, you’re sure you’re all set?”

Jag had the distinct impression she didn’t want to leave. He was probably misreading her, though. She was probably just concerned about her ship. “I’ll be fine.”

“Okay, then.”

“Okay.”

She pushed off from the edge of the cockpit and stood, then descended backward two rungs down the ladder. When her face was level with his she said, “Clear skies, Jag.”

He tossed a salute, not quite lazy but not exactly crisp, either. “As ordered.”

Jaina laughed, and dropped away. Her feet thumped to the hangar floor, and her footfalls heading away were brisk. He listened until she was gone.

Jag flipped the switch to lower the cockpit canopy, then reached for his helmet.

********

The two Jedi Masters had listened closely and silently to Jag’s report. Not that he had much to say. In the hours of his surveillance flight the Confederation had brought no new ships into the system, and there had been almost no activity at the resort station either. So far, Jag concluded, they had no reason to change strategy. Contemplatively, the two Jedi nodded.

“Good,” Luke Skywalker said. “One less thing we have to worry about.”

Dressed in his flight suit but making no attempt to restrain his long hair, Kyp Durron had the next round of surveillance duty. Turning toward his StealthX, he reached out and gave a solid pat to Jag’s shoulder as he went by. “Good to have you back, Fel.”

“Uh, thanks,” Jag said.

Kyp looked back, and flashed a grin. “Hey, if this thing ends up with them shooting at us, I want as many aces in our squadron as I can get.”

As Kyp marched away, Luke glanced at Jag. “At least he said our, not my.”

Jag chuckled. “I was thinking the same thing.”

“I’d best be going,” Luke said. “Thanks for taking this flight, Jag. Having another pilot really helps us share the burden.”

“Any time,” Jag said, waving it off. “My pleasure.”

Luke nodded, then offered a simple tip of his head before walking away across the hangar bay. Only then did Jag realize someone had come up behind him while he’d been speaking to the Jedi Masters. He turned to find Jaina grinning up at him.

“Feels good to be in my cockpit again, huh?”

Jag blinked. “What?”

She canted her head and peered at him quizzically. “I said, it must feel good to be in the cockpit again.”

“Actually,” Jag said sincerely, “it does.”

He had flown a number of clawcraft missions during the Killik war, including the fateful battle at Tenupe. Mostly, though, he’d been a fleet officer. After the war his clandestine missions and subsequent promotion to admiral had consumed all his time until he’d left fleet headquarters to hunt Alema Rar. At least he’d recently had plenty of flight hours in the Wampa’s Claw, but Jag hadn’t flown a starfighter in over a year. And he hadn’t really been a squadron commander since the end of the Yuuzhan Vong war.

It was an odd feeling. When he’d been a younger man, he had nearly defined his whole existence as a starfighter ace and squadron leader. A decade later, he was an admiral and a secret agent, but not a fighter pilot. What, he wondered, would he be ten years from now? Of course, that assumed he could make any sense of his identity today.

“… had to make sure you’d brought her back without a scratch,” Jaina was saying. She was meticulously inspecting the length of the fighter with her gaze.

“Of course I did,” he said, a little more defensively than he’d intended.

When she turned back to him, her grin had faded to worry. “Jag? Are you all right?”

He shook his head briskly, brushing the distracting thoughts away. “Yes.”

Her hand moved toward his arm, then withdrew. “You feel…” For just a moment her eyes grew distant. “Disconcerted.”

Inwardly Jag sighed in relief. Even the Force only showed her his superficial emotions. She couldn’t actually read his thoughts. He couldn’t afford that – and not just because he couldn’t tell her about the Empire of the Hand. “I guess in a way I am.”

“Why?” Jaina took a step closer, but still didn’t touch him. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, really,” he said. “It’s just… Well, I’ve been gone a long time. And sometimes it feels like nobody noticed.”

She never spoke the words, but I did was written all over her face. “Uncle Luke’s like that. It doesn’t matter to him how long you were away. He knows you’re a good person, and he can count on you.”

“It’s not just Luke,” he said quietly. “Everyone’s accepting me back without a second thought. Mara, too. Your parents, from the first moment they saw me at Hapes. My uncle Wedge on the Errant Venture. Kyp just now, of all people.” He took a breath, swallowed, and said it. “And unless I’m reading it all wrong, even you.”

Jaina said nothing. Her lips parted, then closed again.

He didn’t need the Force to know Jaina was struggling with her uncertainty. About how she felt having him back – and about how he would feel about her feelings. If nothing else, it told him he wasn’t reading her all wrong.

“It’s just a little strange, that’s all.” Jag kept his voice quiet. “It’s like I never left.”

When she spoke, her voice came out a whisper. “Maybe you shouldn’t have.”

How dare she? He wanted to turn on his heel and walk away. No, that would be letting her off too easily. He wanted to tell her what she’d done. To yell at her, give her every gruesome detail of just how badly she’d broken his heart. No, even that wouldn’t be sufficient. He wanted to –

Then he saw it in her eyes. The brown orbs were wide with fear. But it wasn’t fear of him, or his anger. It was fear she had inflicted a wound that could never be healed, fear that nothing she could ever say or do would ever be enough earn his forgiveness.

He didn’t even realize his hand was moving until he felt his fingertips grazing her jaw, his palm cupping the soft skin of her cheek. “You know why I did.” His heart was racing. He hoped she couldn’t feel it in his hand. To be safe, he drew it back. “You know why I had to.”

Jaina hadn’t flinched at his touch, and her eyes hadn’t broken their target lock on his. For a long moment she gazed at him. Finally, so softly he almost couldn’t hear, she said, “I’m sorry.”

Two words. Two simple words. His knees almost gave way beneath him.

Jag said the only thing he could find the words to say, and it was true. It hadn’t been true until just now, this very moment, but it was. “I know.”

From across the hangar bay came a loud crash, followed by an astromech’s warbling chastisement and a string of curses that would make a spice dealer blush. In unison Jag and Jaina turned toward the commotion. A few dozen meters away Corran Horn stood beneath his distinctive green-and-white painted X-wing. Next to him was his droid, and what appeared to be a rather large pile of mechanical parts that should have been installed and operational inside the starfighter’s belly section.

“Don’t mind me,” the Jedi Master called out, raising his voice and gesturing his arms like a CorSec officer securing a crime scene. “Nothing to see here. Move along.”

Jag and Jaina laughed, and waved farewell. Suddenly they were facing each other again, alone next to Jaina’s StealthX, everything unsaid looming over them once more…

But now Jaina was smiling. “Hey, it’s almost dinnertime. You want to grab something?”

Jag flashed a smirk. “Without your bodyguard?”

“My bodyg – Oh.” She laughed, light and effortless. “Yeah, without him. Just you and me.”

“Is that allowed?”

“Does it matter?”

“Not really, no.”

“Good,” Jaina said, already striding toward the exit. “Let’s go.”

Jag followed her, wondering every step of the way whether her invitation had been spontaneous – or whether it had been her plan all along.

Did someone say, "J/J"??? batting

FIRST!

Edit: dancing

*contented, romantic sigh*

You just made me whole day. To me, sometimes the small steps towards reconciliation are the far sweeter than the reunion itself. You did a fantastic job of illustrating the sparks flying back and forth between the two of them - the anxiety at close quarters, the desire but reluctance to touch, the constant eye contact... all culminating in the dearest, most honest apology that mended all wrongs. Like a bridge spanning a massive expanse, suddenly wounds can be and are being healed.

Beautifully written!

I think I have to go re-read it for the 5th time. love

Can't wait for next week, Lex!

Great chapter and great J/J scenes grin Now if only we could make Mrs. Traviss and Mr. Denning to go the same way it would be nice grin

"Feels good to be in my cockpit again, huh?"

Now that's a double meaning line from Jaina mischief

Oh I loved it!!! grin

I liked how you continued the acceptance of Jag that was in Exile. That was one of my favorite aspects of that book.

I loved the whole fighter scene where she was telling him what didn't work on her fighter. But I must say, isn't irony grand? tongue

And the whole time I was thinking they just need to kiss and get it over with... love

I can't wait until next week... hugs

Well, I'm beginning to warm up to J/J. I just have a hard time allowing myself to get into it what with the situation poor Jag's in at the moment with LotF unless he really does have some secret plan going on to resurrect the Empire.

I kinda wonder what exactly can come out of this between Jag and Jaina. I'm certain Jaina's not going to appreciate all this deception on Jag's behalf when the truth finally comes out. Regardless it was some nice bittersweet interaction between the two, certainly hints at the possiblity of them getting back together if Jag can let go of his personal baggage tongue

I loved it! I was laughing almost the whole time.

I think my favorite line was "Feels good to be in my cockpit again, huh?"

Now you have to wonder is that what she really said, or just what Jag wanted to hear? whistling

What's up with the lack of a hint for next week? No teaser for us? Ah man. tongue

I didn't realize how much I've missed J/J romantic scenes in profic until now...must be cause this story fits so well into LotF.
Anyways, it seemed so natural, their words. Kind of like how everyone just accepts Jag back.

But of course, my fav line was
"Nice to be back in my cockipit, huh?" wink

Yay! happy

What an excellent post! I agree with what TelannaTani was talking about. Sometimes, it's the anticipation of two characters slowly getting to that big moment where everything's on the table and they say what you've been waiting for them to say for the last few hundred pages or so... Things after that can be good, and at least you're not in a continual state of emotional anxiety, wondering what's going to happen, but then the romance gets complacent and it's all boring again. "Twilight", by Stephanie Meyer is a good example of this: AMAZING! Until the characters get together, then you wish they'd die. doh!

Maybe, because in real life it's hard to get what you want, you feel satisfaction at seeing them get what they want, but you also like to see them suffer a little.

Awesome job! grin

“I’m glad we’re on the same side this time.”

She wasn’t just talking about Alema. “Me too,” Jag said, and meant it.

Everyone say it with me now.... Awwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Why haven't Jag and Jaina have a scene in a fighter/on a ladder in profic before? I really like that choice. It sorta secludes them, but keeps them in their element.

"Feels good to be in my cockpit again, huh?”

laugh

What, he wondered, would he be ten years from now?

Ooh! ooh! I know! (I think) I know!

Here's Jaina being all mature, choosing her words carefully, not just blurting things out... well almost. I'm so proud of her. My favorite part of it was this: It was fear she had inflicted a wound that could never be healed, fear that nothing she could ever say or do would ever be enough earn his forgiveness. It was so beautiful.

It wasn't what I didn't expect wink (the making out in a conference room)... but I will definitely take it!

Now Mr. Alliston ahem... I mean Lex grin this post forced me break out my word processor!

Chimpo posted: Now if only we could make Mrs. Traviss and Mr. Denning to go the same way it would be nice
See I knew you really are Alliston- notice the lack of the third name. This post is proof positive that you are a pro in disguise.

Considering Jaina had nearly shot Jag down from a StealthX, there was no small irony in the fact he was now going to fly one – hers specifically, no less. Life was funny that way sometimes. Jag shook his head and bounded up the ladder. Bracing one hand on the open edge of the cockpit, he sprang into a smooth arc that landed him cleanly in the empty pilot’s seat

I love these little introspective moments.

Funny guy,” Jaina said.

Loved the tech stuff. I get lost on the details, how do you keep those details straight?

Ahh the sweetness of J/J mush! love

You included Kyp ! dancing Very funny exchange. I just finished Dark Journey and really came to love his character. Even in that book it seemed that Kyp supported a J/J romance.

Nice catch. wink The gang did seem to welcome Jag in the inner circle without so much as a look. By acknowledging it, it smooths out the seeming plot flub making it more legitimate.

Feels good to be in my cockpit again, huh?”

Jag blinked. “What?”

She canted her head and peered at him quizzically. “I said, it must feel good to be in the cockpit again.”

laugh Are we really talking about just a cockpit?

“My bodyg – Oh.” She laughed, light and effortless. “Yeah, without him. Just you and me.”

“Is that allowed?”

“Does it matter?”

“Not really, no.”

I like Zekk. Be nice to him. shame_on_you Maybe I can console him when J/J get together. thinking

Great post very satisfying. applause I will even overlook the fact that Jag still had his shirt on...this time. cool

Yay for the romance! I loved the part where Jag waited to leave until the sound of Jaina's footsteps died away, such an unselfconscious romantic moment. And the perpetual star wars line, "I know." Very well done there. So much said with so little dialogue.

And I totally agree with whoever said it above, Hanging a lantern on how easily Jag's been welcomed back makes it more believable. I think it also helps that they don't know his real agenda, and think he's been exiled. No reason not to trust him. But if the EotH plays it's cards at the height of the Jacen business, I think people might just be too distracted and thankful to worry about the deception.
