Heh heh - I kind of agree with [b[Red[/b]. However having said that we seem to often go for people we need, if you know what I mean. And some people need to be needed.
He held the bike on track, and flew through it. The goggles kept the debris out of his eyes, but his mouth and nose weren’t so fortunate.
“Pthtbpt!” he spat, trying in vain to expel the grit. He couldn’t afford to lift a hand to wipe his lips. Not yet.
Yep - he who smiles while on a bike lives to regret it.
Beautiful but sad scenes here. I can feel Jaina's intense grief hidden behind all this semi-deathwish type behaviour.
Loved the dialogue and the wry humour - especially the line of Jag's about taking her to the opera. Tempting to try and come up with a story where she manages to even turn that into a competition. LOL
Jag seems to have the endless capacity to absorb and dispell her angst doesn't he?

Flowerlady
:
Jag should know that Jaina would never let him win...
A man can always dream.
The ending with Jaina breaking down was so sad. She definitely has a destiny few others would ever want to touch...
Yeah.
And this is even before she realizes what’s happened to Jacen…
Voz
:
Beautiful.
Thanks!
Chimpo
:
Looks like next post might be a proposal from Jag and next one will probably be the ( temporary ) end of their relationship and Killik crisis will start.
Possibly.
Give Jaina something that flies and is fast and you are sure to lose whole day on racing or flying
Exactly!
Of course, something tells me Jag doesn’t mind spending a day that way, either…
Solo_and_Fel
:
Although if he did win... she'd say she let him.
You know it!
Plus, you do a great job of writing how good of a team these two make... not just on missions, but just together in semi-"normal" situations.
We don’t get much of the “normal” stuff in canon, since those kinds of passive scenes usually don’t advance the plot or characterization enough (compared to active scenes). In the few we do have, though, I think we see this kind of easy partnership between Jag and Jaina.
Sigh. I miss them being happy... and together.
Me too.
ccp
: Thanks!
Lyne
:
I love reading about the time between TUF and Joiner King. It's bittersweet because you know that they will break up.
I think there’s some great story possibilities there. In the books Troy’s hints suggest he has some definite ideas in mind for how the J/J romance developed and then faded between TUF and TJK, and I expect we’ll probably find those out in more detail later in LOTF. For this fic, though, I decided to stick to the canon speculation idea. Not much to work with, but I think it turned out consistent with what little we do have in canon.
obsessedwithSW
:
Lex you do present J/J as quite an engaging couple.
Thanks!
Although I do think the profic did most of the work for me. I’m just adding a few missing scenes to their lives.
I really enjoyed detail of the swoop race. Lots of fun!
Yeah, those two are insane.
That was a fun intro scene to write.
TKL
:
There are dire consequences otherwise.
ojn
:
This reminded me of Jaina’s Tie-fighter run at Lando’s Folly. Great!
Yeah, Jaina’s the Pilot With No Fear.
A bit of her grandfather’s podracing heedlessness too.
Ego. Fighter pilot. Fel. Solo. All synonyms.
Busted!
Like Jag would ever let himself go…
True.
But most men do fill out a bit between 18 and 25. The CSA probably looks even better now, too.
ROTFLMAO
Thanks for noticing that.
Worked up an appetite, did you?
Whatever could you be suggesting?
I’m trusting you to find some good for their future.
No pressure.
RedGold
:
Jaina doesn't deserve Jag...
Relationships are always difficult when one person is ready for a bigger commitment than the other. All the worse when it isn’t about depth of feelings for the other person or confidence in the strength of the relationship, but internal factors of personal emotional health. “It’s not you, it’s me” may be a cliché, but with the way Jaina’s been portrayed in canon (particularly Dark Nest, although somewhat in LOTF as well) I think it’s really true in her relationship with Jag.
Tahi
:
we seem to often go for people we need, if you know what I mean. And some people need to be needed.
I do see Jaina and Jag as an inversion of Han and Leia in that way. Like her father as a young man, Jaina is an independent person who doesn’t want to need somebody else. Yet when the right person comes along, she opens herself up and lets Jag take care of her.
especially the line of Jag's about taking her to the opera. Tempting to try and come up with a story where she manages to even turn that into a competition. LOL
Yeah. I’m sure she could, though. As long as it doesn’t involve a sing-along.
Jag seems to have the endless capacity to absorb and dispell her angst doesn't he?
In large part I think that’s because Jaina puts too much emotional pressure on herself. Jag is just helping her to let go of that anxiety she’s built up to unhealthy levels…
Thanks for the great replies, everyone!
See you Tuesday for the next chapter.

CHAPTER FOUR
33 ABY, shortly before the first Killik Frontier Operation
Funeral of Admiral Voss Parck, Nirauan
A chill wind whipped across the small plateau, scouring the barren rock and whistling past the solemn obelisk that rose at the place of honor in the cemetery’s center. The stone monument would withstand the elements and the passage of time, a fitting testament to the enduring legacy the great man it memorialized had helped to build.
By now all the others who had come to pay their respects had departed. Jag pulled his long coat tighter around him and strode the last few paces to the side of the sole figure standing in the cold. If his father had shed a tear, there was no trace of it on his face.
“I’m sorry,” Jag said. He had cut short a treaty negotiation and rushed back for the funeral without hesitation. His father hadn’t asked, but he knew just how much it would mean to him to have his only surviving son here.
Soontir nodded. His shoulders rose and fell in a long, slow breath. “We served together a quarter century,” he finally said. “It’s hard to believe he’s really gone.”
“I just hope he’s not too disappointed it was old age that got him.”
“True.” Soontir glanced over, a bemused smile curling his mouth. “Voss always did insist a Moff or one of the Syndics would best him.”
“I’m grateful not to have enemies like that.”
“Yet.”
Jag scowled. “Thanks.”
Soontir reached out to squeeze his shoulder. “I’m sorry about Jaina.”
“Me too.”
“Princess Leia called your mother the very next day after you asked them for Jaina’s hand. They were so excited.”
Despite himself, Jag laughed. “That’s an understatement.”
“We were delighted for you, too.”
“I know.”
“What happened?” Soontir’s good eye spoke more of worry and regret than his voice ever could. “It’s obvious how much Jaina loves you.”
Jag shook his head, searching for the words to explain the inexplicable. “I don’t know… Sometimes love just isn’t enough, I guess.”
Soontir said nothing, but his expression read,
That’s absurd
.
With everything his parents had sacrificed to be together, all the fear and separation, agony and loss, they had endured, Jag understood why it sounded so incomprehensible to his father. Not that it made any more sense to him, but… This was Jaina. She had her reasons and he respected them, even if he didn’t – might never – understand them. He loved her. How could he deny her that, or anything else?
“Something happened to her during the war. The girl I met at Ithor, and the one I found again at Hapes…” Jag blew out a deep sigh. “She tells me everything, things no other person in the galaxy knows, not even Jacen, and yet… There’s something about that mission to Myrkr, something more than just the loss of her brother, that haunts her. Something deeper, darker…”
Still Soontir stood silent, listening, arms crossed over his chest in the icy wind.
“During the war there was never a moment to stop and think, to deal with anything. And she had me. She could bury that pain, banish it. Now… Now she can’t run from it any more. And it’s not just me she’s pushing away. It’s everyone, even her parents. She can focus on her missions, crush the next warlord without flinching. But the moment something, anything, starts feeling permanent, real – suddenly she’s just a scared, lonely girl again. Even with me. Even
about
me.” He shook his head. “I’ve done everything I can, given her everything she’s asked. But I can’t heal her if she won’t let me in.”
“She’ll come back to you, Jagged. I know she will.”
“I never used to doubt that. Now… I just don’t know any more.”
Without warning his father pulled him into a fierce embrace. “You don’t know how sorry I am, son,” he said into Jag’s shoulder. “I pray you never do.”
Jag nodded, and held his father close. A long moment later they parted, and Soontir tipped his head toward the rocky path back to the Hand of Thrawn. Jag matched him stride for stride as they began to walk.
“If Jaina doesn’t come to her senses,” Soontir said after a minute, “I know Wyn’s friend Karri is still carrying a torch for you. She asks about you every single time she sees me.”
“She’s a little young for me, don’t you think?”
“Actually, she’s commanding officer of Nova Squadron.”
“Really?”
“You’ve been gone a long time, Jagged.” He glanced over. “A lot longer than it takes a girl to grow into a woman.”
“Dad…”
“I’m just saying –”
“Dad!”
“What?”
“You’re not helping.”
He held up his palms defensively. “I’m just trying to cheer up my despondent son.”
“By suggesting I take an interest in my sister’s best friend?” Jag glowered at his father. “Does Mother know about this brilliant plan of yours?”
“Well, no.” Soontir flashed a smirk. “Best you not tell her what I said about Karri, either.”
“Now that you mention it…”
“All right, all right. Point made, and taken.” He slowed his pace down the path. “Perhaps I can suggest a more suitable distraction?”
Jag raised a brow and put on as dubious an expression as he could muster. “You’ve set the bar rather low on that score, Father.”
“My son, the comedian.” Pensively, Soontir ran a hand along his clean-shaven jaw. “No, this idea is entirely serious.”
“I’m listening.”
“How much attention have you paid to the updates in the dossiers concerning developments on the Killik frontier?”
“Not much, I’m afraid.”
Soontir waved off the apology. “No reason you should have. Those were the reports prepared for the diplomatic corps anyway.”
“The CEDF reports say something different, I take it.”
“Don’t they always?”
Jag frowned. “How bad is it?”
“Not terribly so – yet. It is the trends that are disturbing.”
“Trends?”
“In population growth. In consumption of resources and production of military assets. Most troubling, in the scope of territorial expansion – and the rate of accumulating Joiners. All of these have increased exponentially.”
That was troubling, all right. It wasn’t the weather that made Jag shiver. “For how long?”
“Only in the last two years have the numbers really made a difference.” Soontir gazed up into the sky. Dusk loomed, and the brightest stars were beginning to speckle the indigo vista. “The xenobiologists have not been able to pinpoint the precise time of origin, but it appears to be at least a year prior to the end of the war, perhaps as early as just after the fall of Coruscant.”
“So the Yuuzhan Vong were not involved.”
“There have been no indications of that at all. This appears to be something arising within the Killik hive itself.”
“I don’t know,” Jag said, “if that’s better or worse.”
“So far, worse. For all their fanaticism, the Yuuzhan Vong were deterred by defeats, and heavy losses could compel them to change course. The Killiks are willing, apparently, to expend unlimited resources to acquire their objectives.”
“Apparently? So far?”
Soontir tipped his head, and stopped in the gloom amid the boulders. “There is still a great deal we do not know about the Killik threat. That is why I need to deploy one of my very best field commanders and strategists to the frontier.”
“You mean me.”
“Yes.”
Jag paused. This was unexpected. He had several unresolved diplomatic endeavors in play, but nothing that couldn’t be finished by someone else. And maybe getting away from the Galactic Alliance – and everything there that reminded him of Jaina – was just what he needed right now. It was certainly worth thinking about…
“I suppose I
am
the resident expert in assessing new alien menaces.”
“And learning how to defeat them.”
“You think it will come to war?”
Soontir sighed. “If the Killiks do not redirect their expansion, we will have no choice but to defend the Ascendancy. And even if they do, we cannot allow a major military threat to remain so near to our borders.”
“Then I suppose my mission is rather cut out for me.”
“Take some time to consider it, Jagged. I don’t need an answer right away.”
“I will.” He motioned to the path. “We should get back. Mother will be worried if we take much longer.”
“Good point.” Soontir patted him on the shoulder. “Besides, I think Karri is waiting for you.”
Jag waggled a finger. “Don’t press your luck, General.”

OOh! First post
- Review in a few...
Edit: Wonderful Father/Son moments.
“I’m grateful not to have enemies like that.”
“Yet.”
Jag scowled. “Thanks.”
Lol.
Good point, Soontir. Good point.
“What happened?” Soontir’s good eye spoke more of worry and regret than his voice ever could. “It’s obvious how much Jaina loves you.”
Not good…
Of course, we already know they DIDN’T get together, so perhaps I should let the emotions go for the time being.
Even about me.” He shook his head. “I’ve done everything I can, given her everything she’s asked. But I can’t heal her if she won’t let me in.”
“She’ll come back to you, Jagged. I know she will.”
“I never used to doubt that. Now… I just don’t know any more.”
Excellent explanation, Lex. Heart-wrenching, but very close to what I’ve always calculated in my head actually happened. I’m just glad you didn’t actually write the scene where she *gulp* rejected his offer. I couldn’t handle it!
Without warning his father pulled him into a fierce embrace. “You don’t know how sorry I am, son,” he said into Jag’s shoulder. “I pray you never do.”
*wipes tear from her eyes* This is the relationship I hope my [future] children have with their father. And because of the great man my husband is, I know it will be! *tries not to wail uncontrollably*
*sniff* Sorry, the pregnancy hormones make everything emotional.
“If Jaina doesn’t come to her senses,” Soontir said after a minute, “I know Wyn’s friend Karri is still carrying a torch for you. She asks about you every single time she sees me.”
Soontir Fel! Good grief – moving a little quick, aren’t we?! For shame!
“Dad!”
Either? What
else
is he not supposed to tell his mother??
“Only in the last two years have the numbers really made a difference.” Soontir gazed up into the sky. Dusk loomed, and the brightest stars were beginning to speckle the indigo vista. “The xenobiologists have not been able to pinpoint the precise time of origin, but it appears to be at least a year prior to the end of the war, perhaps as early as just after the fall of Coruscant.”
I was waiting for the bells to go off in Jag’s mind – but then, he probably doesn’t keep a running timeline of the entire galaxy in his head.
But with Jag, you never know.
“There is still a great deal we do not know about the Killik threat. That is why I need to deploy one of my very best field commanders and strategists to the frontier.”
“You mean me.”
“Yes.”
Well that’s quite the compliment. Jag certainly was the best choice, even if it DID make it interesting later…
“I will.” He motioned to the path. “We should get back. Mother will be worried if we take much longer.”
“Good point.” Soontir patted him on the shoulder. “Besides, I think Karri is waiting for you.”
Jag waggled a finger. “Don’t press your luck, General.”
These two crack me up!!
I love these fillers, Lex. Sometimes the deleted scenes add so much to the storyline that we wonder why they weren’t included in the forefront. Of course, then there wouldn’t be wiggle room for this fic! Great update!

Well, well. I like this characterization:
Love-‘em-and-move-on-to-the-next-pretty-girl-Soontir!
Wait ‘til Syal finds out!
I loved your introductory scene — vivid landscape easily imagined, cold easily felt, perfect tone, a sense of purpose. Your Jag and Soontir are created with great honesty and you have such a wonderful understanding of SW canon characters, both from the books and the comics. It's obvious that you consider everything in detail when you write.
“Princess Leia called your mother the very next day after you asked them for Jaina’s hand. They were so excited.”
Such a simple, believable bridge regarding the marriage “near-miss”, letting us fill in the rest of the details.
Without warning his father pulled him into a fierce embrace. “You don’t know how sorry I am, son,” he said into Jag’s shoulder. “I pray you never do.”
This is a great dynamic between Jag and Soontir. I would like to believe that Soontir is
this
father… I can't imagine that he isn’t, given the way Jagged Fel has been written in profic. Had Soontir been utterly hardened and not compassionate, I doubt Jag could have turned out as he did.
Besides, his affair and marriage to Syal would never have happened.
He held up his palms defensively. “I’m just trying to cheer up my despondent son.”
Yeah. Right.
If Jag doesn’t tell Syal, I will.
Soontir tipped his head, and stopped in the gloom amid the boulders. “There is still a great deal we do not know about the Killik threat. That is why I need to deploy one of my very best field commanders and strategists to the frontier.”
“You mean me.”
“Yes.”
Excellent bridge to DNT. Oh, yes.
“I suppose I am the resident expert in assessing new alien menaces.”
“And learning how to defeat them.”
Oooh. Some respect from dear old Dad. Way to go, Jag!
Excellent update,
Lex
! Every chapter leaves me wanting to read the next one!

Loved the father/son moments. Poor Jag. This is exactly how I picture this time frame where Jag knows that Jaina is pulling away and troubled. I sincerely doubt it came as a shock to him when she left him.
Can't wait to see where this story is heading.

I really loved the father and son talk...
The explaination of Jaina's settling down phobia was very good...I've always thought this too.
I also like the Killik explaination... and personally think you did a better job of it than Denning did....
***Sorry..DNT wasn't my favorite read***
I love the way you are showing us the more private moments of Jag's life and the ones behind the scenes...
This all makes great sense...and wonderfully written....

Bah bah bummmmmm.... foreshadowing.... perhaps.
“I don’t know… Sometimes love just isn’t enough, I guess.”
I hate to think that could be true.
But I understand Jag needing to justify it.
Even about me.” He shook his head. “I’ve done everything I can, given her everything she’s asked. But I can’t heal her if she won’t let me in.”
Bam! Nail on the head! I really like your take that Jag was understanding of her situation. I'm glad he realizes she wasn't just pushing him away, she was pushing everyone. It gives hope that this relationship isn't over quite yet. And yet there's still room for him to be bitter during the DNT.
“You’ve set the bar rather low on that score, Father.”
Jag humour is great.
Wasn't the happiest post ever, but I still liked it. Great job
