Great explanation for Jag's being on the Killik front for DN.
Poor guy, breakups are hard.Let me give o a hug Jag.
It was funny how Soontir tried to lift his spirits. Kids never appriciate their parents suggestions for matchmaking.
Wonderful update!

Beautiful exploration of the relationship between Jag and his dad. (I think I'm definitely falling for your Soontir! What a guy.)
Enjoying the Fel humour a lot - very wry, but with fondness as its basis. It has a real world ring to it, too.
I enjoyed the comment that Parck must have been miffed he died of natural causes. Very apropos.

Voz

I’m just glad you didn’t actually write the scene where she *gulp* rejected his offer. I couldn’t handle it!
Me too.
I thought about including that scene in the story, but I decided not to for two reasons. One, I really do want this story to focus on Jag’s path to becoming Emperor. The J/J relationship is part of that, but it is secondary. The rejection scene itself wouldn’t add anything to Jag’s characterization as proto-Emperor. Two, exactly what Jaina said isn’t important. What matters is how Jag feels, and we see enough of that anyway.
Good grief – moving a little quick, aren’t we?! For shame!
Nah, he’s not serious.
It’s just typical man-talk. We always recommend to our heartbroken friends that they jump immediately into unhealthy, doomed rebound relationships.
It’s really bad advice but men keep giving it.
Either? What else is he not supposed to tell his mother??
Don’t tell her about the brilliant plan. Don’t tell her that Soontir’s noticed that Karri has grown into a woman, either.
Jag certainly was the best choice, even if it DID make it interesting later…
Yep.
Soontir certainly had no way of knowing about Raynar’s involvement with the Killiks, or any other possibility that Jaina would show up on the Killik side.
stickster
:
I'm excited to see what these add up to...(more mush??)
Well, the Dark Nest crisis is next on the timeline…
RedGold
:
Jania had a good thing and she went all EMO on us and I am really annoyed that it looks like they get hooked back up...
Jaina just took a few too many romance tips from her former Master. Apparently she thinks you’re supposed to take a decade off before you finally end up with your true love.
ccp
: Exactly! I knew another guy would understand.
OJN
:
I loved your introductory scene
Thanks!
I worked on those first few chapters for a while. I needed to be sure they set the right tone for the scene.
I can't imagine that he isn’t, given the way Jagged Fel has been written in profic. Had Soontir been utterly hardened and not compassionate, I doubt Jag could have turned out as he did.
I agree. I think Soontir’s characterization in the NJO is calculated to show only his professional, General Baron persona. But from what we see of Jag, as well as brief hints with Syal and Wyn, we can infer a lot more about what he’s like behind the scenes.
If Jag doesn’t tell Syal, I will.
Lyne
:
I sincerely doubt it came as a shock to him when she left him.
I agree. I think Jag’s scenes in TJK really set that tone. He would react very differently to Jaina if she had abruptly and unexpectedly broken his heart. Instead, he projects something much more like resignation and disappointment…
Flowerlady
:
The explaination of Jaina's settling down phobia was very good...I've always thought this too.
The fear of having a family of her own has been an important piece of Jaina’s characterization for a long time. Even before Myrkr, she didn’t want to end up like her mother, not being there for her children. Profic didn’t have to take the issue to the extreme they did (compare COJF
) but the issue has to be addressed and resolved no matter what direction she goes.
I also like the Killik explaination... and personally think you did a better job of it than Denning did....
Actually, this Killik threat/Raynar retcon was one of the two big speculations I wanted to explore in this story. (The other was the Empire of the Hand’s relationship to the Ascendancy in the first two chapters.) I just don’t buy Formbi’s explanation to Luke in TJK. Maybe it’s meant to be the “true” canon reality, but Formbi’s such a deceptive sneak I think it’s entirely plausible he’s just spinning out a story he thinks Luke will believe. If I’m right about that, I think my speculation here ties up the threads pretty well. Glad you agree.
Solo_and_Fel
:
Bah bah bummmmmm.... foreshadowing.... perhaps.
Those Moffs are the worst!
Bam! Nail on the head! I really like your take that Jag was understanding of her situation. I'm glad he realizes she wasn't just pushing him away, she was pushing everyone. It gives hope that this relationship isn't over quite yet. And yet there's still room for him to be bitter during the DNT.
I see Jag as a very perceptive and insightful man in general, and very good at reading other people in particular. Given how close he was to Jaina and how deeply he cared for her, I think he would have seen her emotions for what they were. He wanted to help her, but she wouldn’t let him. He would be hurt, of course, it seems clear from TJK that the breakup triggered emotions of sadness, not anger, in both of them. Which does indeed leave hope for reconciliation.
(Although we do have to get past TUQ and TSW first…
)

They really don’t.
And you just know that Syal, loving and caring mom that she is, tried exactly the same thing with Jag, too!
Chimpo
:

Lucky for Soontir, Jag was too depressed to get angry.
Maggy
:

Exactly. What were you thinking, Jaina?
Tahi
:
(I think I'm definitely falling for your Soontir! What a guy.)
We don’t have a lot of Soontir in profic, but I like to think of his characterization as reverse engineered: a career soldier like Jag but with a healthy dash of Han Solo Corellian Recklessness thrown in.
After all, the Baron defected from the Empire, flew with Rogue Squadron, and gave up everything for a woman.
Enjoying the Fel humour a lot - very wry, but with fondness as its basis.
There’s the Fel vs Solo difference. Less sarcasm, more dry wit.
I enjoyed the comment that Parck must have been miffed he died of natural causes.
Well, I had to figure a man who gave up a comfy Imperial life in the Core for a hard, cold existence in the Unknown Regions would expect to go out in a blaze of glory.
Thanks for all the great replies, everyone!
Next post on Tuesday like usual.

Wow I just found this and I'm absolutely entranced! I really like the way you're looping everything together. I can't wait to see what you do for the LotF era.
I loved Soontir joking with Jag about Wyn's friend, and I really like the dynamics you've got going between the two.
Wonderful post ^_^ I'll definately be back on Tuesday.

Better late than never
“What happened?” Soontir’s good eye spoke more of worry and regret than his voice ever could. “It’s obvious how much Jaina loves you.”
Jag shook his head, searching for the words to explain the inexplicable. “I don’t know… Sometimes love just isn’t enough, I guess.”
Soontir said nothing, but his expression read, That’s absurd. [/i]
I'm with Soontir on this one. Fight JAG!
“You’ve been gone a long time, Jagged.” He glanced over. “A lot longer than it takes a girl to grow into a woman.”
“Dad…”
“I’m just saying –”
“Dad!”
“What?”
“You’re not helping.”
That's too funny
I can see Jag's discomfiture...
I like that you didn't show the breakup. It's not necessary to the story of the making of an emperor. What we learn from the on-camera discussion is good enough to see how it went down, and let our imaginations fill in the gap.
This all ties in nicely to how Jag ended back in Chiss space, fighting the Killiks. You're so good at wrapping your hands around the details so we can read and nod our heads as if to say, Now it all makes sense.
I'm promising to get to that beta tonight. Looking forward to more

Wow I just found this and I'm absolutely entranced!
Glad you’re enjoying it so far.
I can't wait to see what you do for the LotF era.
I was hoping I’d complete the story before
Exile
at the end of February. But I’ve added a few chapters to the outline, so it looks like I might not make it.
Oh well. I’ll either make this story into an AU after all
or just finish it up as canon-speculation-as-of-
Tempest
TKL
:
Better late than never
Yeah, that’s canon J/J, all right.
I can see Jag's discomfiture...
Dad’s can be so cruel tormenting their sons sometimes.
I like that you didn't show the breakup. It's not necessary to the story of the making of an emperor. What we learn from the on-camera discussion is good enough to see how it went down, and let our imaginations fill in the gap.
Yep. How Jag reacts to the breakup is much more important than what exactly was said in that moment…
You're so good at wrapping your hands around the details so we can read and nod our heads as if to say, Now it all makes sense.
Until
Exile
comes along and contradicts everything, anyway.
Seriously, though, even if this does end up as AU, I do think it makes a pretty good alternative explanation for a lot of the bits and pieces of canon.
Posting momentarily!

CHAPTER FIVE
35 ABY, shortly after the capture of Lowbacca at Qoribu
CEDF Star Destroyer
Fell Defender
, Gyuel System
Jag sat at his broad desk, elbows braced on its edge, and appraised the array of battle assessment reports spread out before him. The events of the last several days had been very informative – and very costly. With Jedi assistance, the Killiks had come to learn how to repel the defoliators effectively. That had left him no choice but to remove the Jedi from the equation, so he had sprung his favorite cloaked Star Destroyer trap. It had worked to perfection, just as it had against the Yuuzhan Vong years earlier. Just as he had known it would. If not for a massive suicide attack by a swarm of Killik dartships that had annihilated the Star Destroyer at the last moment, he would have captured more than a single Jedi prisoner. He would have them all.
Including Jaina.
What was she thinking? He had been wondering that since the very first intelligence report that had shown her face among the seven Jedi who now fought alongside the Killiks. Couldn’t she see the menace they posed to the Ascendancy – and after that, to the rest of the galaxy? The bugs were no innocent victims here. They were a threat. And not just a military one. Even a brief recollection of the few Joiners he had encountered made him shudder. He had so many questions he needed to –
A knock came at the open portal to his stateroom, followed by a female voice. “Commander Fel?”
He looked up to see one of his squadron leaders standing just outside. She was tall and lithe, with shimmering auburn hair and freckled skin. “Yes, Karri?”
“You have a transmission from the Aristocra.”
He furrowed his brow. “Why didn’t they –”
“It seems you shut it off.” She tipped her head toward his desk.
“No, I –” He stopped in mid-thought as he glanced to his comlink, which rested deactivated on the side of his desk. “It seems I did. Thank you.”
Without a word she tossed him a salute and a sly smile, then left.
Jag reached over and tapped the button to activate the large viewscreen on the opposite wall. A few moments later the blue face of Chaf’orm’bintrano flickered into focus.
“Commander,” the aged Chiss diplomat said.
He tipped his head. “Aristocra. What can I do for you?”
“I am arriving presently at Coruscant. I wanted to be certain I have the most recent, and most accurate, accounts from you before I have my audience with the Jedi Masters Skywalker and the Chief of State.”
Briefly Jag summarized his preliminary conclusions, as well as the lingering questions that continued to trouble him. Then he sat back in his chair. “I’m sorry I don’t have anything of more use to pass along.”
Formbi lifted a hand to ward off the apology. “You have provided a great deal of insight, Jagged. And undoubtedly I will know considerably more about the situation here than the leaders of the Galactic Alliance.”
“Very true. It is fair to assume the Jedi at Qoribu have shared nothing with their superiors. From our brief conversation and their actions, it is clear to me that Han and Leia Solo are here not to assist them, but to retrieve them.”
“Indeed. Do you think the Jedi leadership on Coruscant is aware of your prisoner?”
“I don’t see how they could be. We are monitoring all outbound transmission from this system.”
Formbi nodded. “Then I think I shall fail to mention anything about it to them. I very much doubt they would have any occasion to ask.”
“The Skywalkers almost certainly will find a way to ask you about the Empire of the Hand. They make a habit of asking too many questions.”
“And not paying close enough attention to the answers. Yes, you’re right. I imagine they will.” Formbi grinned mischievously. “Fear not. I have an account of the Killik crisis, Ascendancy politics, the Empire of the Hand – even your family, in fact – prepared for just such an eventuality.”
Jag peered at him skeptically. “You’re planning to deceive a Jedi Master?”
“I’ve done it before.” Formbi shook his head. “Luke Skywalker is too trusting for his own good.”
“I’ll leave the lies to you.”
Formbi smiled. Then he hesitated, frowning. “Does Jaina Solo know you are in command of the Chiss forces at Qoribu?”
“I don’t know. I imagine she recognized the trap I set for the Jedi pilots. And now that I have spoken to her mother, it is only a matter of time.”
“But she has not attempted to make contact with you?”
“No.” Jag realized his hands were clenching the arms of his chair so hard his knuckles were white. “Although she has attempted twice already to rescue her Wookiee friend. She
will
try again. And he
will
try to escape.”
“Escape? How?”
“Never underestimate a Jedi, Aristocra.”
Formbi tipped his head. “You would know better than I.”
Jag chuckled. The Chiss had
no
idea what they were dealing with. They couldn’t even handle a single Jedi Knight. With seven, they were completely out of their league. “I wish you luck with your meetings, Aristocra. You will need it, if Tsweck’s earlier futility is any indication.”
“Not at all,” Formbi scoffed, grinning all the while. “He is a rank amateur compared to me. I shall obtain as many answers you seek as the Jedi know.”
“I look forward to it,” Jag said, and meant it. “We will speak again soon.”
“Fight well, Commander,” Formbi said, and terminated the feed.
********
35 ABY, a month after the Battle of Kr
CEDF Star Destroyer
Fell Defender
, Qoribu
On the viewscreen, his father ran a hand through graying hair. “You are confident the Jedi genuinely see preventing a war as their most important objective?”
“I am certain.” Jag was sitting forward in his chair, arms crossed in front of him on the edge of his desk. “Luke and Mara Skywalker risked far too much in their operation at Kr, if their goal was not to
stop
the Killiks in some way. Leia Solo was instrumental in reasoning, such as it is, with the Killiks during the truce negotiations.”
“True. But what about the Jedi Knights who are actually fighting alongside the Killiks?”
“Jaina wants peace, as well.”
“And the others?”
Jag shook his head. “Jaina is by far the most experienced commander among them. The others defer to her leadership.” When his father didn’t question that conclusion, he continued. “She would never reveal strategy to the enemy – unless she
wanted
her own attack to fail. There is no other explanation for her warning of the ambush. She believed the Killik attack was a mistake.”
Soontir nodded thoughtfully. After a long pause he said, “I’m sorry you had to fire on her during the battle.”
“It was her choice to attempt to rescue her friend,” Jag said. “And I was not concerned for her safety in any event. She is too good a pilot to fly into a turbolaser blast.”
“Even so, it is never easy to set emotion aside and make such a decision.” Then Soontir chuckled. “On a lighter note, you must be relieved the Hapans are finally leaving the system.”
“That’s an understatement.” Despite himself, Jag let his disgust show on his face. “Dukat Gray has caused nothing but trouble since he arrived. It’s no wonder the Hapans became a matriarchy if all their men are such idiots.”
Soontir chuckled. “Perhaps due to their inferior social status, they cannot acquire the education and training you expect.”
“No,” Jag said. “Stupidity of that magnitude has to be genetic.”
“While we’re on the topic of stupidity…” Soontir blew out a brisk sigh. “I agree that the Ascendancy had no chance of successfully maintaining custody of the Wookiee Jedi. Nothing good could have come of attempting to hold him prisoner any longer.”
Jag tipped his head. “I hope I did not overstate my argument too much in the report.”
“Not at all. Well, the Chiss may think so, but I do not. This is nothing more than another situation of Chiss inflexibility clashing with reality – at the risk of grave consequences. A Jedi prisoner is by nature a special case requiring special consideration.”
“I will admit,” Jag said, holding his father’s gaze, “I am relived you see it my way.”
Soontir flashed a smirk. “I always see matters your way – when you’re right.” Then he frowned. “I am sorry you had to guarantee Lowbacca’s parole personally, Jagged. That demand by the CEDF was completely uncalled for.”
Jag uncrossed his arms and held out his hands. “Inflexible Chiss thinking strikes again. But it is the price I am willing to pay to do the right thing.” He rested his palms on the smooth, cool surface of the desk. “Besides, this outcome might be for the best.”
“How so?”
“The Jedi will not back down from a cause they believe in, and I very much doubt that my personal jeopardy in his repatriation will be enough to lead Lowbacca to walk away from this crisis. Damage will be caused, and my reputation with the Chiss will suffer.”
Soontir gave him a skeptical look. “You say that like it’s a good thing.”
“It is.” Jag leaned back in his chair. “The Chiss have become too accustomed to my role in the CEDF. Yours as well, for that matter. The Ascendancy is an important component of our Empire, but they are overdue for a reminder that
they
joined
us
, not the other way around.”
“You surprise me, Jagged,” his father said. “You’re not ordinarily quite so ruthless.”
“Ruthless?”
“You’re preparing as though the truce is certain to fail.”
“It is.”
Soontir grinned. “And you are using that inevitability to engineer your own disgrace. Thrawn would be proud.”
“Maybe so. But he would not be proud of my failure to identify the conflicting loyalties among the Killiks. Over and over I saw the inability of the Will to prevent the situation from escalating. I should have identified the existence of the Dark Nest long before now.”
“You can’t blame yourself,” Soontir said, peering intently at Jag from the viewscreen. “There was no way you could have discovered the Gorog on your own. Even extensive study of ordinary Joiners would not have revealed the Dark Nest. It was only by examining the unique attributes of their own Joiners that the Jedi made the discovery – and even then they nearly missed it.”
“I know.” Jag sighed deeply. “You know, Father, it is much easier to fight a war when the Jedi are on
your
side.”
Before Soontir could reply, Jag’s comlink trilled with an urgent message. “Duty calls,” Soontir said from the viewscreen. “We’ll speak later.”
“Affirmative,” Jag said as the two men tipped their heads in farewell. Then he tapped a button and toggled the viewscreen to the bridge communications station.
Formbi’s blue face was waiting. “The Hapan fleet is about to jump to hyperspace. Jaina Solo would like to speak with you before they do.”
Jag’s heart skipped a beat, and a hollow ball plunged its way through his gut. He swallowed hard. “Put her through.”
For the moment it took the transmission to switch, all Jag could think about was the way she had touched him through the Force over a month ago.
See if you can catch me, lover boy
. It had been a warning of the Killik ambush. Had it been more? Did she –
The viewscreen filled with an image of Jaina… and… Zekk… –
Jag found himself staring at his own reflection in the smooth, polished tile of the refresher wall. His green eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled, his skin pale. His body, which slumped limply on the floor in a corner of the small room, trembled with the dry heaves that clenched sharply, painfully, on his empty stomach.
He could remember none of the words from their conversation. He had no idea how long ago it had taken place, a few minutes or an hour. Jag knew only that it had been horrible, more horrible than the most awful of his nightmares and the most terrible of his darkest and deepest fears. He didn’t even know which was worse: seeing Jaina betray all the symptoms of a Joiner, or seeing her beside Zekk. It didn’t even matter any more if she still had feelings for him. His Jaina – the Jaina he still loved – was gone.
A tone sounded from the door panel. Someone was in his office, and whoever it was had figured out he had disappeared into the refresher.
“Go away,” he croaked.
“Jag?” He knew that voice.
He didn’t answer, but that didn’t stop her. A series of beeps indicated the override code, and the refresher door slid open. Karri stepped inside.
“Jag!” In a heartbeat fear and worry flashed across her face, and then she was kneeling at his side. “Are you all right?”
“No,” he whispered hoarsely. “No, I’m not.”
She looked at him, hesitating, then rose to her feet. She found a small towel, wet it in the washbasin, and knelt at his side again. Slowly, gently, she used the warm, damp fabric to wipe his face, his jaw, his chin. Last, tenderly, his lips. She sat back on her heels, tentative.
“Thank you,” Jag said.
Karri nodded. She tossed the towel up into the washbasin, then settled herself on the floor next to him. Her hand touched his shoulder reassuringly.
She was the closest thing he had to a friend on this entire Star Destroyer. Among the Chiss, that really wasn’t saying much. But it was something.
Jag slumped into her, letting his head collapse onto her shoulder, and wept.

If someone says, "Have a nice weekend," I never say, "You too." Because I never know if, perhaps, by the time the weekend rolls around, I will have other plans for that person. Come Friday, I may wish to have them slain. - George Carli

RE: The Making of an Emperor (canon speculation NJO-LOTF: Jag & J/J): New Post Jan 30th!!
Wow...that was very moving.
I loved the look into Jag's mind concerning the events during DNI. Very insightful and I really liked your ideas concerning Lowie's release. I never did get that...Jag should have known he'd go back to the Killiks.
And the end....That was heart-wrenching....I felt sorry for Jag even when I read the book...and I didn't even ship J/J then...but seeing his POV now that I do...about made me cry too.

OMG!
More later...
Edit:
More now...
I'm really enjoying Jag's maturity in this story, and the way his father regards him as something of a peer. There is obvious father-son pride in their conversation, plus their senses of humor are intact BKJ (Before Killik Jaina). You've done an excellent job developing their relationship so far.
Seeing Jaina and Zekk (and jumping to a few conclusions) must have cost Jag a lot. He would surely need a shoulder to cry on...
Karri seems to be a kind and sensitive woman who is still carrying that Jag-torch.
If I read that bathroom scene correctly, there's more to come on that subject.
Waiting for more!

You know, I got really mad at Jag for being a jerk during that conversation. I didn't even think about--you know, beyond the Zekk thing--how terrifying it must've been to see her all...buggy. Yikes. :\ And, you know, I kinda resent her, but I'm glad he had somebody to lean on...
I just wish it was Jaina. (Maybe it will be...eventually.
Those crazy Force-wielding Fels had to come from somewhere...
)
This part was really good, too. Just also really sad.
