The Jedi will not back down from a cause they believe in, and I very much doubt that my personal jeopardy in his repatriation will be enough to lead Lowbacca to walk away from this crisis. Damage will be caused, and my reputation with the Chiss will suffer.”

Soontir gave him a skeptical look. “You say that like it’s a good thing.”

“It is.” Jag leaned back in his chair. “The Chiss have become too accustomed to my role in the CEDF. Yours as well, for that matter. The Ascendancy is an important component of our Empire, but they are overdue for a reminder that they joined us, not the other way around.”

“You surprise me, Jagged,” his father said. “You’re not ordinarily quite so ruthless.”

“You’re preparing as though the truce is certain to fail.”

Soontir grinned. “And you are using that inevitability to engineer your own disgrace. Thrawn would be proud.”

I love how your plotline is so seemless! This is exciting!

And that comment about working against the Jedi- is so true.

I had to feel bad for Jag in the end. He is not going to have a fling with Keri(sp?) chick is he?

I cant wait to get to LOTF timeline. It is my current obsession

delurking...

Lex, I really enjoyed this, I think it is fitting that the Fels are manipulating the Chiss - I believe Jag wanted "out" long before Tenupe. It is great to read of Jag's misery over Jaina's Joining - thanks for that scene even if poor Jag turned to Karri for comfort. The relationship you write between Jag and Soontir is wonderful - I love that they are on an even par here.

I hope to catch up on all the earlier chapters too!

Oh my goodness - poor Jag. It must be like the feeling one would get if an old friend suddenly got sucked in by some weird religious sect. How totally powerless he must feel. sad

Jag is carrying a huge load at present what with all the intrigue AND the Jaina situation. I wonder if his dad's provocative mention of Karri previously is going to bear some fruit? thinking Still - I can understand Jag's need for a shoulder to cry on.

I'm not sure what I think about the elderly Chiss guy: is he a bit too sure of himself?

Very interesting developments in this viggie, Lex. happy I really must catch up with my profic reading, I can see.

Darth Lex posted:
He would be hurt, of course, it seems clear from TJK that the breakup triggered emotions of sadness, not anger, in both of them. Which does indeed leave hope for reconciliation.

YAY HOPE! dancing

“Yes, Karri?”
Ha! Nice cameo, Lex.

“I always see matters your way – when you’re right.”
Soontir is great. Plus Fel humour is great. Like you said in your responses... more dry humour. I think you really have the differences down.

"...Damage will be caused, and my reputation with the Chiss will suffer.”
He would do that on purpose?!?! That makes me think his bitterness over it in the Legacy series is even more of an act.

His Jaina – the Jaina he still loved – was gone.
Aw. Unfortunately at this point... that's pretty true.

And the end... I didn't think much about how Jag would react to seeing her all Killiky... I was too busy being disturbed by it myself at the time.

Sad post. I remember cringing along with Han when Jaina and Zekk talked to Jag at the end of Joiner King.

I'm looking forward to see more of Jag's point of view during the dark nest crisis. One last thing, I have a bad feeling he's going to turn to Kerri to try to replace Jaina.

Maggy: did Jag really cry in the end?!?
Yep. cry Losing the love of your life will do that to even the toughest guy…

ccp: Thanks! happy

Flowerlady: I really liked your ideas concerning Lowie's release. I never did get that...Jag should have known he'd go back to the Killiks.
I agree. There’s no way it was a “mistake” on Jag’s part; he’s far too perceptive and knows too much about how the Jedi think and act. Troy is playing at something, and was careful with his POV usage in those scenes. I think either Jag is intentionally setting up his own exile (like Thrawn did), or the entire parole guarantee/family dishonor story is all one big lie spun out by Formbi and Jag to cover the real story. For my purposes in this story, the former is more fun. grin But I wouldn’t be surprised to see canon use the latter… thinking

seeing his POV now that I do...about made me cry too.
I think Troy chose to show the holocomm call from Han’s POV because, of the group on the Hapan ship, he was the one most upset and disgusted by Jaina’s Joiner behavior (and Zekk, for that matter tongue ) – which means he’d pick up on the subtleties of Jag’s reaction better than anyone else, too. sad

OJN: I'm really enjoying Jag's maturity in this story, and the way his father regards him as something of a peer.
Thanks for noticing the transition. cool More to come… wink

Karri seems to be a kind and sensitive woman who is still carrying that Jag-torch.
Actually she’s crazy and manipulative. I’ve just disguised it well so far. silly

If I read that bathroom scene correctly, there's more to come on that subject.
You’ll find out on Tuesday… shhh

Chimpo: Thanks! grin

stickster: I didn't even think about--you know, beyond the Zekk thing--how terrifying it must've been to see her all...buggy. Yikes.
I tend to think Jag was much more upset by seeing Jaina as a Joiner than by seeing her with Zekk. Given the way Jaina broke up with Jag and the reasons she gave, Jag would probably have confidence that any relationship with Zekk wouldn’t last long and would fail for the same reasons. He might worry a little that Zekk could soothe Jaina’s issues better than he can – but if he believes Jaina’s really meant to be with him then he wouldn’t fear that too much. On the other hand, as far as Jag knows at this point, being a Joiner is permanent and irreversible. He knows Jaina was fighting alongside the Killiks, but he probably didn’t know if she was actually a Joiner or not. When he sees that, he’d be heartbroken. To him, Jaina is now a bughugger (if not bugslut) for the rest of her life… cry

RedGold: I’m sensing a theme. tongue

Voz: It's no good if I'm crying at work...
mischief Just wait for the post when Jag whistling

obsessedwithSW: And that comment about working against the Jedi- is so true.
It sure is. Helps explain why Jag would want some Imperial Knights in his Empire. cool

He is not going to have a fling with Karri chick is he?
angel

I cant wait to get to LOTF timeline. It is my current obsession
Looks like we’ll get to LOTF right around when Exile is released. doh! The next chapter is for TUQ; chapter six goes with TSW. Then one more chapter to deal with some intermediate events before chapter eight takes us to 40 ABY and the events of Betrayalgrin

jaynasolofel: I think it is fitting that the Fels are manipulating the Chiss - I believe Jag wanted "out" long before Tenupe.
I think so too. Time to get away from all the blue guys and hang out with Corellians again. tongue

It is great to read of Jag's misery over Jaina's Joining - thanks for that scene even if poor Jag turned to Karri for comfort.
I’m sure he has a whole line of fangirls eager to help comfort him… love

Auntie: Thanks! happy

Tahi: It must be like the feeling one would get if an old friend suddenly got sucked in by some weird religious sect. How totally powerless he must feel.
Exactly. sad If it were “only” Zekk, he could deal with that. (He’d just kick the twerp’s butt and knock some sense into Jaina. laugh ) But Joining… There’s very little you can do if someone is no longer herself – and Jag has no idea how an “intervention” for Joining would work, if it’s even possible… worried

I'm not sure what I think about the elderly Chiss guy: is he a bit too sure of himself?
Probably. silly But as I’m using the scene in TJK here, Formbi spins out a story for Luke and Mara that makes a lot of sense. It’s internally consistent and answers their questions about the events in Chiss space. So they believe it. mischief

Solo_and_Fel: He would do that on purpose?!?! That makes me think his bitterness over it in the Legacy series is even more of an act.
I like the theory that Thrawn got himself exiled on purpose, and I think Jag would do the same if he really wanted out. As for LOTF – yes, I do think Mr. Fel doth protest too much. whistling

I didn't think much about how Jag would react to seeing her all Killiky... I was too busy being disturbed by it myself at the time.
I think Troy did a great job portraying just how disturbing the Joining was for those close to Jaina. In some ways, Jag’s reaction would be even stronger than her parents, because of the lovers’ intimacy they shared… worried

Lyne: I remember cringing along with Han when Jaina and Zekk talked to Jag at the end of Joiner King.
Me too. sick

One last thing, I have a bad feeling he's going to turn to Kerri to try to replace Jaina.
Yeah, but does that ever work… whistling

Thanks for all the great replies, everyone! grin

See you on Tuesday for the next chapter. dancing

CHAPTER SIX

36 ABY, three days after the attack on Supply Depot Thrago
CEDF Command Center, Killik frontier

He sat in the darkness of the pilots’ briefing amphitheater. The only illumination in the room came from the large display screen on the wall before him, and it wasn’t much. The images of Supply Depot Thrago were filled mostly with the black sky of space and the dark rock of the moon. With two fingers he toggled the surveillance cam feeds to play forward, then back. Further back. Then forward again.

“Jag?”

He had been so focused on the footage he hadn’t even heard her enter the room. He kept his eyes on the screen, peering at the nearly invisible spots of black.

“You’ve been in here for hours,” Karri said. “What’s the matter?”

He blinked, and shook his head. Tapping a finger to stop the feed, he glanced over his shoulder. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

She walked slowly down the wide steps of the aisle. “What doesn’t?”

He shook his head again. “It’s… complicated.”

“All right,” she said, sliding into the seat at his left. “Try me.”

Jag scrolled the footage back, to just after the start of the attack. With his free hand he snatched up the laser pointer. “A pair of StealthX trios. One –” on the screen, a small red dot circled three indistinct shapes “– went after the fuel tanks. The other –” he circled them, too “– went for the ammunition dumps.”

Karri squinted at the screen, then nodded. “Go.”

He tapped the button, playing the sequence in slow motion. He followed one of the starfighters with the red dot. “This is Jaina Solo.”

Karri glanced over at him. “How do you –”

“Trust me. It’s her.”

A pause. “She’s not flying lead in her trio.”

“Like I said, it makes no sense.” Jag sped up the playback as the attack runs commenced. “There isn’t a single Jedi Knight in the entire Order with more combat flight or squadron command experience than Jaina. But she’s deferring to someone.”

“A Jedi Master?”

“Perhaps. But I don’t think so. Watch.” The attack progressed. “Here –” he froze the image, and circled the pointer dot “– the trio leader takes direct hits on his forward shields, and now Jaina becomes the trio leader.” He sped ahead through the next phase of the attack. “The trio hits the first ammo dump, then… the second.” He slowed the footage. “Now, the third.”

Karri sat forward in her seat, but said nothing.

“They approach the target, Jaina in the lead. Then, abruptly, she pulls up. One of her wingmen – Zekk, no doubt – matches her move. The other – the former leader – stays on course.”

Karri nodded. “I see it.”

“The third pilot refuses to break course, and fires on the ammo dump with a delayed timer bomb. Jaina and Zekk turn back, and fire their bombs –” he circled the contrails “– not into the ammo dump, but the hangar.”

For a moment Karri was silent. Then she said, “It was a warning. They knew there were Chiss in there.”

“They sensed it in the Force,” Jag agreed. “That’s why Jaina and Zekk pulled off the third attack. The other trio did the same on their attack runs – hitting all targets in sequence, but omitting any where Chiss were present. Just as I would expect from Jedi.”

“Then why did the third pilot – Oh, right.” Karri looked over, and her hand reached out to squeeze his knee. “Doesn’t make sense.”

“No, it doesn’t.” Jag blew out a frustrated sigh. “We know who the Jedi Joiners are. Intelligence would observe it if anyone departed or arrived.” He shook his head, and slapped down the laser pointer on the small table beside his chair. “I know these Jedi personally, Karri. And they’re friends of Jaina. They don’t do things this way.”

She ran her fingers back and forth across his knee. “But they did, Jag. Someone did.”

Only at the last instant did he stop himself from repeating, yet again, that it didn’t make any sense. Instead he said, “I know, you’re right.”

“The answers aren’t in the video feeds. If they were, you would have found them by now.” She slid forward in her chair, preparing to stand. “And you’re only going to drive yourself mad if you keep watching this, expecting to find something.”

“I suppose that’s true,” he admitted. He tapped another button, and the images of Supply Depot Thrago vanished. In their place the display screen filled with a large CEDF emblem. Then Jag stood up, and she did too. “I’ll have to find my answers some other way.”

In the dark she took his hand. “What are you going to do about the attack?”

“Retaliate.”

If she was surprised by his answer, she gave no indication. Under Chiss law, his decision was perfectly justified. Because no Chiss had died, he technically could choose to treat the attack on Supply Depot Thrago as less than a full act of war. Even before the attack, though, the Killiks technically had been in violation of the Qoribu Truce by establishing nests inside the buffer zone. Not to mention their activities in harboring pirates and trafficking in black membrosia. He had the discretion to call this one either way – and there was no doubt in his mind.

Under the influence of the Dark Nest or not, UnuThul and the Killiks wanted a war. Jag was finished with waiting to bring it to them.

“What about the GA reaction?” Karri asked.

“What of it?” Jag shook his head. “Omas orders a blockade of Killik space, as though we are too stupid to see right through his pathetic attempt to make up for his prior mishandling of the crisis. The Jedi are in such disarray, they have allowed Omas to select their temporary leader in Luke Skywalker’s absence, instead of picking one themselves.” Then he chuckled derisively. “And the GA’s military leadership is such a disaster that an Alderaan survivor has appointed an Imperial Grand Admiral as the Supreme Commander of their forces.”

Karri laughed. “When you put it that way…”

“As a courtesy I will inform Pellaeon of my intentions before we launch our strikes. I trust him not to reveal that information to the politicians – or anyone else in the Alliance who might warn the Killiks.”

“You trust him because he’s Imperial?”

“Because he’s honorable.”

She nodded. “Well, then I guess there’s nothing to worry about.”

“Not from the GA itself, at least,” Jag said. “It’s the Jedi who could be a problem.”

“You’ll beat them,” she said, stepping closer. “I know you will.”

“We’ll see.”

One more stride brought her toe to toe with him. She barely had to tilt her head to look straight into his eyes. “Enough with the doubts, Captain. It doesn’t suit you.”

“No?”

“No,” she insisted, tugging him by the hand as she headed up the steps toward the exit at the back of the amphitheater. “Now, come on. You’ve been hiding in here all day. The least you can do is have dinner with me before you start a war.”

“Actually,” Jag said, staying rooted in place, “the least I can do is go off and start the war, and leave you to dine alone.”

Two steps up the aisle, Karri peered down at him. “True. And the least I can do is –”

“No need to elaborate.” Jag climbed the first step. She took his cue, and they walked up together. “The war can wait a few more hours.”

“Smart move.”

“Besides, I haven’t eaten since this morning.” They were almost to the back of the room, and he released her hand to reach for the door panel. He hit the button, and the door slid open. “As a wise man once said, never begin hostilities hungry.”

“Who said that? Thrawn?”

“No. Me.”

“You’re an idiot,” she muttered, and strode out into the bright corridor.

For only a moment Jag stopped, glancing back over his shoulder at the CEDF emblem on the display screen. At least one thing had gone according to plan. Lowbacca had taken part in the attack, and Jag’s separation from the Chiss was in motion.

But the rest… Too many questions, not enough answers. Something was very wrong in all this. Something almost within his grasp, and yet… He just couldn’t put his finger on it. Then his stomach growled, and his focus snapped back.

“Hey,” he said, striding after her, “that wasn’t very nice.”

********

Chapter Seven (37 ABY) next week… And what happens on Tenupe might not be what you expect. whistling

Karri doesn't give up easily, does she? raised_brow I'm beginning to wonder whether she's keeping an eye on Jag for herself, or for someone else...

I'm catching up.

Chapter 5

Any body but Karri?!?! shock Please?!?

“The Jedi will not back down from a cause they believe in, and I very much doubt that my personal jeopardy in his repatriation will be enough to lead Lowbacca to walk away from this crisis. Damage will be caused, and my reputation with the Chiss will suffer.”

Soontir gave him a skeptical look. “You say that like it’s a good thing.”

Soontir grinned. “And you are using that inevitability to engineer your own disgrace. Thrawn would be proud.”

Okay that part is just bloody brilliant! Jag wants to be exiled. It works well in canon, especially in light of what we know about Thrawn and Soontir's history. Your mind is detailed oriented to the point I have trouble keeping up with canon this and canon that, but when I do catch up each time I'm continually amazed at the level of detail you've invested in this story.

Keep up the great work! applause
