Thank you Miri_Jade, Healer Leona and VaderLVR. Here's more, I hope you like it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day:
Alexis stood quietly in the council chamber between her master and her father. She felt small and insignificant, not to mention unsure of why she was there. She could understand Seym being there since this was about whether or not her father, his master, was going to go to Korriban and Seym would be going with him. It was already decided she was staying behind.
“Padawan Wingstar,” Master Trendor began. “Master MqCray tells us you heard from Darth An’Thrax.”
“Yes, master.” She looks up at her father then Master Hauzer briefly before looking back at the council leader.
“Are you sure it wasn’t a dream?” The master looks into her eyes.
Alexis forced herself not to look away from his intense scrutiny. “It was as real as me standing here speaking with you, Master Trendor.” Then she raised her eyebrow before adding in a dry tone. “Unless you are a dream as well.”
Healer Hauzer cleared his throat. “Master Trendor, I was there the third time An’Thrax came to her. I definitely sensed him.”
Master Trendor nodded in response to the healer, but kept his gaze on Alexis. “I suppose you wish to go with the team of jedi we send to capture the dark lord so you can confront him.”
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t, sir, but…” she stops as she puts a hand to her belly, “there is someone else I must consider before my own wants and needs.”
Both Healer Hauzer and Master MqCray proudly placed a hand on Alexis’ shoulders.
“Master Healer, your request to go on this mission is granted. It is your choice whether or not to take your padawan. Though if she does go, it is this council’s recommendation she not be allowed down on the surface of Korriban.”
“Alexis and I shall follow the council’s recommendations.” Healer Hauzer bowed.
Alexis could scarcely believe what she was hearing. She was going to be able to go on the mission after all.
“No!” Master MqCray exclaimed as he stepped forward. “Her mother and I forbid her to go!”
Master Trendor raised an eyebrow in Bryont’s direction. “Do you support your daughter being a jedi, Master MqCray?”
“Yes, Master Trendor.” Bryont bowed his head.
“We appreciate your concern for your daughter, Bryont.” Master Covtai, who was Bryont’s former master and had raised a family of his own, spoke kindly. “However, you of all people should know once the child has chosen the path of the jedi, the force must guide their path from thenceforth.”
While Bryont struggled for control, Alexis stepped forward. “Masters, I know you are much wiser than I, but, I fail to understand why I should put the life of my unborn child at risk to go on a mission of which I would only play a minor, if any, role.”
Master Trendor looked at Healer Hauzer. “Your master can answer that question better than we, for it is his visions which prompt us to send you.”
Both Alexis and Bryont looked questioningly at the master healer who cleared his throat before speaking. “My first vision was of Alexis playing the flute here, in this room,” the healer began as he locked eyes with Bryont, “while you beheaded Darth An’Thrax in a rage. Afterwards, Alexis’ flute broke…” he paused slightly as he looked at Alexis with sorrow. “You miscarry.”
Alexis paled slightly as she touched her stomach. Yesterday morning I tried to kill him, but now I’d give my life to save him. “What was your second vision, Master?”
“The second one seems more vague than the first, being just impressions along with images. It showed you boarding a spaceship with the rest of us, and then you standing at the bedside of Darth An’Thrax. There was an impression of time having passed, and you were showing a young infant to an elderly woman.”
“So, if these visions are true, to protect my baby we should put it at risk.” Alexis said slowly with one of her eyebrows raised.
“It seems that way.” The healer replied.
“And if I go, I prevent my dad from killing Darth An’Thrax.” She gazes up at her father.
Master Trendor spoke as he leaned back in his chair. “Preventing Master MqCray from going would assure that just as easily.”
Bryont took a deep breath and slowly let it out, saying nothing.
“It would also prevent him from falling to the dark side.” Master Covtai observed.
“Or just delay it as self-doubt consumes me. A slow slide as opposed to a quick plunge is still a fall.”
Silence fell upon the room.
Alexis cleared her throat. “Um, masters, what would be the point of me going if my father doesn’t go? It seems to me that my father possibly beheading Darth An’Thrax and me miscarrying in the first vision were connected. If my going on the mission somehow prevents him from killing the dark lord and me from losing my baby, as the second vision seems to imply, then why shouldn’t he go?”
“Because visions aren’t always that cut and clear, Alexis.” Master Covtai patiently explained. “Feelings, our way of looking at things, and our assumptions can color the true meaning. We could even question whether or not in Healer Hauzer’s second vision you were actually going on the mission. That part of the vision could have been a replay of you boarding the Queen’s Light yesterday with the same people who are going on the mission.”
Alexis brow furrowed in confusion. “So, you’re saying I shouldn’t go after all?”
“Master Covtai is just saying we have to be very careful when taking action based on visions, as our wishes and fears could trick us into interpreting those visions the wrong way.” Bryont gently said as he placed a hand on Alexis’ shoulder.
Master Covtai nodded in agreement with his former padawan.
“Then should we ignore the visions?” Alexis asked in bewilderment.
“By all means no, young padawan. What we should do is take careful consideration and meditate on what these visions mean.” Master Covtai said with a slight chuckle.
Alexis bit her tongue, for she did not wish to seem impatient.
“You’re probably wondering if we have meditated on these visions yet and if we’ve come up with the answer to what course we should take.”
She stood there open-mouthed. “Am I that transparent?”
Master Covtai laughed. “Contrary to the rumor mill, I was young once, and I had much the same questions you do about premonitions, dreams, and visions. Even if I were too old to remember my experiences, I have relived them through my children, their children, and even through your father when he was my padawan.” He smiles fondly at Bryont.
“So, have you?” Alexis asked. “Meditated and come up with what course we should take, that is?”
Masters Covtai and Trendor looked solemnly at each other before the latter answered. Master Trendor watched Bryont as he answered. “We have meditated. The course we take depends upon Master MqCray. Master Healer, Alexis, Seym, we need to speak with him alone, so if you will please step outside?”
Seym and the healer both bowed and left, but Alexis paused after bowing to look up at her father.
“I’ll be alright, Allie, go on.” He said quietly as he peered down at her with a warm smile. He looked back up at Masters Covtai and Trendor as his daughter left.
“Bryont, at our request, the healer left out part of his second vision.” Master Covtai began. “It appears that in it, you or Darth An’Thrax, or both, will die after he is taken into custody. The circumstances to the death or deaths were unclear. That part of the vision was murky.”
Bryont stood quietly as he thought about what his former master had told him. “So, it isn’t just the possibility I may go to the dark side that gave you pause to send me, but the possibility of my death? I have been on dangerous missions before, so the possibility of death is no stranger. I’d rather become one with the force than become an agent of the dark.”
“It is settled then. You and Alexis shall both go.” Master Covtai nodded then rose from his chair. He walked over to Bryont and put a hand on his shoulder. “For what it is worth, I have never doubted you. You are a true master, an honorable man, and a great friend.”
A little while later, Bryont walked in the front door of the modest home he shared with his wife and family. He took a deep breath in appreciation as Maci greeted him with a loving embrace. “Let’s get a babysitter for the triplets and go out tonight.” He whispered in her ear as he held her tight. “I want to dance with you.”
“You mean you’re not going on the mission?” Maci asks with a hopeful tone was in her voice.
“I am, but we don’t go until morning.”
“Oh.” She pulled away from him with a frown.
“Maci, it’s going to be alright. I promise you.” He kept a gentle hold on her hand to prevent her from walking away. “Honey, please don’t make this harder than it already is!”
Maci effortlessly slipped her hand from his light grasp and turned from him. She folded her arms in front of her as she insisted, “Bry, I don’t want you to go! I have a bad feeling about this mission.”
“Honey, we agreed we would abide by the council’s decision.” He hugged her from behind and kissed the back of her head.
“She turned around in his arms and returned his embrace, burying her face in his soft green tunic. “I know. I’m sorry. I’m trying to be strong, but it’s hard when every fiber of my being tells me I’m going to lose you if you go.”
Running his fingers through his wife’s soft brown curls, he kisses her forehead. “That will never happen, my queen. We’re a part of each other forever as long as there is the force.”
“That is not the same as you being here to physically hold your children and me. I don’t want you here in spirit; I want you here to hold me until we grow old together!”
“Is that why you sacrificed Allie to rescue me?” Bryont swallowed. That was not what he had meant to say, but it seemed to have come of its own volition.
“So, finally we get this out in the open.” Maci pulled away from him.
“Maci, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…”
She backed away from him when he reached out to her and interrupted. “Bry, honey, we’ve been tiptoeing around this for too long. We need to talk about it so we can put it behind us.” She turned away from him again, this time to hide the tears that threatened. “I know you have harbored anger at Healer Hauzer and me for letting Alexis take your place in the clutches of the Sith lord.”
“Maci, I love you! I don’t want to fight. I understand why you did it.”
“Understanding isn’t always the same as accepting.” She spoke quietly.
“I have accepted it, Maci. Really, I’m alright with what you did.”
She swung around to face him. “Then why haven’t you made love to me in the past three months, Bry?” She quickly wiped a tear that escaped her eyes.
Bryont just stood there a moment, stunned, his mouth hanging open. Has it really been that long? “Maci,” he finally spoke as he reached out and took her hand, “I… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to neglect you. I love you.” His other hand rose to caress her cheek. “You don’t doubt that, do you?”
Maci closed her eyes as she leaned her face into his gentle touch. “No, I know you love me.” She reached her hand up to lightly stroke his. “Before this happened, we were planning on having another child. Yet, after we rescued Alexis, you’ve shown no interest in pursuing that. You hold me, but haven’t touched me in that way in so long.” She opened her eyes and looked up into his. “Can you deny you have anger towards me when...?” She stopped as her tears started to flow.
“Maci…” He put his arms around her. He was unable to say anything for a bit as he held her. Finally he whispers. “It wasn’t anger that kept me from making love to you. I,” he swallowed as he paused, feeling a bit awkward.
Maci looked up at him and gently stroked his cheek with her delicate fingers. “What is it, Bry, please don’t hold back.”
He kisses the tips of her fingers, “I wasn’t sure if you wanted me any more in that way.” His face flushed crimson in embarrassment and he turned his eyes away from hers. “I felt ashamed and well, you didn’t seem interested either.”
“You felt ashamed?” Maci tilted her head to catch his eye. “Why?”
“I know it’s stupid, but I felt ashamed that I was too weak to protect my family and that I got myself captured in the first place. I felt weak and inadequate. And when you didn’t touch me in that way…” He looked at her a bit shyly. “I’m definitely interested… are you?” He blushed once more, feeling silly for being bashful with his wife.
He looked so adorable to her when he blushed that she laughed lightly as she hugged him. “Oh, my sweet knight, I love you and want you so much!” She rose up on the tips of her toes so she could kiss his lips.
Bryont’s hands shook and his heart sped up as he returned the kiss, lightly at first but then pressed harder with rising passion. He ended the kiss briefly to whisper, “Let’s get a babysitter. We don’t have to go out if you don’t want, but we don’t want to be interrupted tonight.”
Maci smiled seductively up at him. “Good idea.”
Thank you, Healer_Leona and VaderLVR64. Wow, I didn't realize it's been so long since I updated here! I had written more w/ Bryont and Maci and then decided to scrap it because it was taking too much time away from the main storyline. I'll use it as a short story later though if I have time. I still haven't written anymore for this story though. blush Maybe by next weekend I'll have something.
An hour later, after dropping the triplets off at the babysitter’s home, Maci looked up at him in a decidedly less amorous mood. He had informed her about Alexis going on the mission and about the dream that compelled the council to make the decision that she should go. Maci was able to accept that, but, “What are you hiding from me, Bryont MqCray?”
Bryont sighed, knowing he should have expected her to sense his deception. He could never hide anything from her. He took her hand and guided her over to the couch and sat down with her. “There was more to Healer Hauzer’s dream, though it was less clear than the part about Alexis. There was an impression that after we capture Darth An’Thrax, he or myself would die.”
Maci paled as her eyes went round. “Bry, don’t go then!”
“Honey, we’ve been through this. You know I have to go. We agreed we would go by the council’s decision.”
“Does dying appeal to you so, my knight?” A tear rolled down her cheek and she felt it hard to breath.
“No, Maci, it doesn’t. But I must do my duty. You know this.” He spoke firmly, but his tone softened as he gently wiped her tear. “Besides, you know visions and dreams aren’t always what they seem. Death in dreams doesn’t always mean a loss of life, but a portent of change.”
“I don’t want things to change!” Maci exclaimed as she hugged her husband. “I don’t want to lose you!”
Bryont held her in his arms and kissed her forehead. “I promise you aren’t going to lose me, Maci. And I don’t intend to die.”
“Then why were you trying to hide this from me?” She looked up into his eyes.
“Because I didn’t wish to upset you. Every time I go on a mission we have this same discussion.”
“What? No we don’t!” She pulled away from him.
“Yes, Maci, we do!” He insisted. “Tell me one time since we were married you didn’t have a feeling when I went on a mission that I was going to die and begged me to not go.”
She remained silent awhile, for she could not think of a single time that had not occurred. “But, this time is different! There is Healer Hauzer’s dream.”
“Which was so vague we don’t know for sure who is slated for death: me, or An’Thrax.” Bryont reminded her. “Plus we don’t know if this death is a portent of a loss of life or of significant change.”
Maci looked away from him. She did not know what to say. She could not understand why fear gripped her heart every time he had to leave. No matter how hard she tried to let go of the fear, it seemed to well up from an unknown place deep inside her. Looking down at her hands, she fought back tears. Why can’t I shake this feeling of dread? I’ve been raised in the Jedi way since I was small. I know better than this!
“Maci,” Bryont spoke softly as he put a hand gently on top of hers. He could sense her inner struggle with fear. He wanted to help her through this, but knew it was her own personal trial she had to get through. If he gave in to her wishes and stayed, she would never be able to conquer it, just as if he stayed he would never be able to get rid of the doubt he felt about himself. “When you were pregnant with the triplets and you decided to leave the order so you could spend all your time raising our children, I was ready to do so as well. Do you remember what you said?”
Maci slowly looked back up at him and nodded. “I told you to stay in the order. I… I said you are a great Jedi and need to fulfill your destiny.” An escaped tear rolled down her cheek as she recalled that day that seemed like a century ago. Even through her fear, she knew what she said back then was the truth.
“Is it less true now then it was then?”
A panic seized her as she realized that it was just as true now as back then, and was aware that he must go on this mission. The rational part of her felt like she was trapped in a deep hole watching as a doppelganger spoke to her husband. She quickly rose from the couch and faced him angrily. “If you are so kriffing eager to die, go then! But keep in mind, if you do our marriage is over!”
Stunned, Bryont just sat there staring up at Maci. It took a moment before he found his voice. He stood slowly and reached out to her. “Maci, you don’t mean that.”
She backed away from him. “Yes, I do! I’m sorry, Bry, I’m not strong enough to deal with this. If you’re going to go, go now, and don’t come back!”
Bryont shook his head, remaining calm in spite of the fact that he felt like he had been thrust through the heart with a lightsaber. “Maci, don’t do this. I love you!”
I love you too my knight, so very much! She said from down the hole, but her evil doppelganger rolled a rock over the opening so she was not heard. She turned from her husband with her arms folded across her chest. “It isn’t enough. I can’t live like this, waiting and worrying that you will die and leave me forever every time you go on a mission.”
He stepped forward and laid a hand gently upon her shoulder. He closed his eyes as he felt a cold stone wall rise up between them. “I have to go, my queen,” he whispered in her ear. “I’ll be back, I promise.” He kissed her neck then turned to leave, his heart torn asunder.
So does Maci...
VaderLVR64: Thank you happy
Ok, this next installment keeps changing POV... I hope it's not too confusing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As soon as she heard the door close behind her, Maci collapsed to her knees and wept. “I’m so sorry,” she sobbed, “I failed you, my knight.”

After she was finally able to compose herself, she rose from the floor. What is wrong with me? Why can I not shake this feeling of dread every time he goes on a mission? I know he can take care of himself. I have faith in him. Yet…

She hugged herself as she felt a sudden chill. She screamed and tripped backwards over the foot stool, just managing to keep on her feet. A bandaged face had suddenly flashed before her eyes then disappeared just as rapidly. Her heart threatened to leap out of her chest as she looked around but saw no one.

“What is happening to me?” She whispered breathlessly.

Bryont woke the next morning not remembering having gone to sleep. Without opening his eyes, he reached his hand over to caress Maci’s face. His eyes popped open when his hand touched the side of the bed and he moaned as he remembered he was in his old room at the Jedi Temple. He closed his eyes momentarily and reached out to Maci. ~~I love you, my queen. ~~

As he rose from the bed, he looked at his wrist-chrono. “I have just enough time.” He muttered as he hurried into the refresher and took a quick shower then dressed in some fresh robes. He looked in the mirror and scowled as he realized his razor was at home.

“Well, the hair is hopeless anyway.” Grumbling, he pulled the still wet, wild mass of red curls back into a ponytail. He rushed out to meet Maci as she picked up the triplets at the babysitter. Hopefully she didn’t pick them up yesterday after I left.

As a bleary-eyed Maci dressed, she could sense Bryont reaching out to her. Though a big part of her wanted to answer in kind and embrace him through the force, she closed herself off to him. Even then she could feel his presence through their bond. I’m holding him back.[/i] She thought. He’s better off without me. After she finished dressing, she rushed out to pick up the triplets.

As Bryont approached the babysitter’s home, he could see Miri talking to her at the door. He hurried his steps when he saw her turn to walk with the children toward the landspeeder.

“Daddy,” Starr squealed in delight as she saw him. She ran to him with her little arms outstretched.

Keegan and Bheltair jumped up and down excitedly and pointed towards their father. “Mommy, dere’s Daddy!”

Bryont smiled brightly as he picked his daughter up and swung her around. “Good morning, my bright starlight!” He embraced his daughter. At least somebody is happy to see me, he thought as he drew closer to Maci. He could feel her displeasure even through the wall she had erected between them. He hid the hurt he felt behind a smile as he cuddled Starr.

“Hi.” He spoke softly as he looked intently at his wife. He frowned in concern as he noticed how pallid and haggard she appeared. “Are you alright?” He reached out to take her hand.

Maci quickly drew away and turned from him, avoiding eye contact. She quickly loaded the boys into the landspeeder and fastened them into the safety seats.

“I’m fine.” She replied frostily, though she felt anything but fine. Due to strange flashes of images that disappeared too quickly to tell exactly what they were, she was unable to sleep. At times the images were accompanied by incoherent howls, grunts and the cry of a small child. She feared she may be going crazy.

A part of her just wanted to be in Bryont’s strong, loving embrace, but instead she heard herself inquiring irritably, “Don’t you have somewhere you need to be?” She reached to retrieve Starr from Bryont’s arms.

Starr protested by screaming and crying. “No!” She squirmed and kicked, clearly wanting to stay with her father.

“It’s alright sweetheart.” Bry spoke soothingly as he projected a sense of calm to the distraught toddler. “I have to go on a mission. I’ll be back.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.” Maci snapped as she fastened a still struggling Starr into the safety seat beside Keegan.

Bryont fought back anger at the situation. When Maci finished settling Starr in and started to walk around to the driver’s side of the landspeeder, he blocked her way. “Maci, please,” he implored as he lovingly took her hand and placed his other hand upon her cheek. “Don’t do this to us!”

I’m not doing this, you are.” She tried to pull away but Bryont pulled her into his arms to embrace her. He kissed her fervently upon her lips and she froze.

Two factions warred within her. The first was the part of her who dearly loved her husband; who sorely wished to return his affections and beg his forgiveness for her weakness. The other was a dark specter of anger and fear which had taken over her actions. It was this specter which prepared to use the force to choke Bryont.

“No, stop!” Maci used force push to send Bryont away from her, and then she rushed to get in the driver’s seat of the landspeeder. Burning tears streamed down her face as she quickly took off like a mynock out of hell.

Bryont sat on the side of the road, stunned, as he watched the landspeeder leave him behind. He whispered, “Maci, why?”

So to my friends that even call but I don't call back
I want you deep inside my heart upon a hill
It seems to hide sometimes and run away and wonder
I'm really sick of saying sorry but I will

VaderLVR64: Thank you.

Healer Leona: So, I'm doing a good job of weaving suspense in the story? devil

This part of the story isn't what I planned, but, I think it fits well... Lexi isn't the only one who is dealing with 'soul shadows'... and Maci is finding how it is when shadows hide too long within. Oops, enough with the forshadowing! doh!

Mira_Jade: I figured you were busy with finals and all happy I hope everything has gone smoothly. Anyway, I'm glad I could surprise you... in fact, the turn of events in this story sort of surprised me, too! A rabid sub-plot bunny ambushed me. laugh

Well, on with the story:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, onboard the Hand of Liberty, Alexis paced in the quarters she was assigned to share with her master, Healer Hauzer. They awaited her father to come aboard so they could lift off for their mission. She felt something was extremely wrong. She sensed great fear coming from her mother and deep sorrow from her father. The young padawan bit her lip anxiously.
“Are you alright, Alexis?” The healer sat calmly in a meditative pose.
I am fine. It’s my parents. I sense there’s something very wrong.”
“Will your agitation help them?”
Alexis scowled in irritation then closed her eyes, forcing herself to relax as she stopped her restless pacing. “No, master.” She sat down in the same manner as the gentle healer and reached out with the force. She could not get a clear sense from her mother, but… ~~Father, what is it? ~~
~~It will work out, Allie. With time, it will work out. ~~
In spite of the confidence and patience those words portrayed, Alexis could sense her father’s uncertainty. ~~What will work out? What’s happened? ~~
~~It’s between Maci and me, Allie. Don’t worry about it. ~~
Alexis frowned slightly, but understood. ~~OK, I love you. ~~
~~I love you, too, honey. I…~~ There was a hesitation in her father’s thoughts. ~~I’ll be there in a bit. ~~
Bryont sighed as he walked down the street at a fast pace. I can’t leave Maci like this! He headed home. When he arrived, he noticed the landspeeder was not there and frowned. Where can she be? He thought as he entered their home. He could only sense that she was really frightened, but not where she was or what she intended to do. ~~Maci, where are you? ~~
There was no response.
Deep in thought, he rubbed his chin, ignoring the stubbly growth. He walked over to the holo-imaging machine they had gotten as a wedding gift. He hit the record button.
“Maci, I don’t know where you are right now. I…” He hesitated, not knowing what to say. When he continued, his voice was full of emotion. “I love you. I want so bad to forget about going on this mission. Going to capture Anthrax means nothing to me if I lose you.”
He bit his lip as he stopped to compose himself. “Yet, will I be helping you if I stay? I can sense the fear in you. It’s fear of losing me… of being left alone. Though why you are pushing me away when you don’t want to lose me is something I can’t understand.” He sighed and lowered his head. He then raised it to look into the holo-cam. “I have to go for you now. I hope you can understand this. You need to face this fear; to conquer it so it doesn’t keep coming back to haunt you.”
He swallowed. “I love you, Maci. I will do anything I can to help you. Even risk losing you.”
He tapped the deactivator switch, and then folded his arms against his chest as tears started to flow and he wept. After composing himself, he got on the comm and called some friends. When a woman in pale Jedi robes came on screen, he nodded. “Hello, Noni. Is Jok there?”
“Hi, Bryont!” Noni looked off screen then stepped a little to the side. “Yes, he is,” she answered as Jok appeared beside her.
“Bry, what’s wrong? You look even uglier than usual.” Jok spoke jocularly, but then frowned as he saw the grave look in his friend’s eyes.
“Jok, I need you and Noni to do a favor for me. Maci… isn’t feeling well, and I have to go on a mission. If you see her, can you convince her you can take care of the triplets for awhile?”
Noni tilted her head. “Why can’t you talk to her about it?”
“I… we…” he stopped talking and looked down.
“It’s alright,” Jok put an arm around Noni’s shoulders. “We’ll do what we can, Bry.”
Looking back up, Bryont nodded. “Thank you.”
“May the force be with you.” Noni spoke quietly.
“Yeah, and may you get a new hairstyle while on the mission. It looks like something’s alive in there.”
In spite of himself, Bryont smiled lopsidedly. “You’re just jealous ‘cause you can’t grow any.” Then he got serious again. “I have to go now before they leave without me.”
While Bryont spoke with Jok and Noni, Maci stood before the Jedi temple, looking up at the spires. I don’t deserve to be here. But, I have no choice. I don’t know what’s happening to me, and I don’t want to harm my children. She gazed down at Starr, Keegan and Bheltair who held each other’s hands and looked up at her with their large, trusting eyes. She swallowed a lump in her throat as she thought how the boys’ eyes appeared so much like their father’s. Then she closed her eyes as she recalled the same trusting look in Bryont’s emerald orbs as she came close to force choking him.
She steeled herself as she took Bheltair’s tiny hand and lead the triplets into the temple.
Noni and Jok had gotten off the comm with Bryont several minutes before a knock came at their door. Noni went over to open it. “Maci,” she exclaimed in surprise. “Bry just called. Are you alright?” As she spoke, Noni put an arm around the younger woman’s shoulder and lead her in, the triplets following their mother inside.
“He did?” She asked in alarm as she sat down on the couch with Noni. The triplets climbed up onto her lap. “What did he say?”
“Only that you weren’t feeling well and that you may need us to babysit for you.” Jok replied as he sat in a chair across from them. “What’s wrong, Maci? Are you and Bry having problems?”
Maci stiffened. “I can’t talk about that right now.” She swallowed and looked sorrowfully at Jok. “Please, don’t ask any questions. I need… I have to deal with something, and I need you Noni to take care of the children. Will you, please?”
“Of course we will.” Noni spoke soothingly. “We haven’t had younglings this age in awhile. It will be fun.” She smiled at Bheltair who was looking up at her and grinning from ear to ear. “Won’t it, sweetie?” She held her hands out to him, and he giggled as he went into her arms. Taking the toddler into her lap, she grinned as she gently tickled him and he began laughing and squirming.
Starr joined Bheltair in Noni’s lap and tried to tickle the jedi under her chin. Keegan, though, stayed in his mother’s arms and snuggled against her. Maci looked down at the youngest of the triplets and smiled sadly as she hugged him. I love them so much! I must let them go before I hurt them.
Jok watched Maci closely and thought as he rubbed his chin. “Hey, Keegan, we have some numnums in the kitchen. Do you want to come with me to get some?” He asked as he rose from the chair.
Keegan looked up with a big smile on his face and immediately climbed off his mother’s lap to follow Jok.
Noni laughed. “Keegan is just like his father. Promise him food, and he’ll follow.”
Maci giggled for a moment, but then stopped and a tear came to her eyes. She stood quickly. “I have to go now. I’m sorry!” She turned and ran out of her friends’ quarters.
Jok paused on the way to the kitchen and looked over at Noni. A wordless communication passed between them then Jok took Keegan into the next room. Noni continued playing with Starr and Bheltair.
Maci walked down the hallway at a rapid pace, feeling the need to leave the temple right away. She did not belong there any more. At the time, she was not sure where she belonged. She took a quick intake of breath as she sidestepped, narrowly missing bumping into Master Covtai. “Master, I’m sorry!”
“That’s alright.” He laid a hand gently on her shoulder. “Are you alright, Maci?”
She backed away from him and looked down at the floor. She knew he would know she was lying so she did not bother to do so. “No.” Then she took off running and did not stop even after she had left the temple. She left the landspeeder parked across the street.
