It seems that Luke has had to make that same decision before. Except that time it was with C'baoth. He will also have to have a mental decussion with himself about that Jedi attachment thing. Holding my breath until the next post. Great job and thanks.

AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was afraid you'd do that! I don't want Mara to be assimilated.  Luke isn't going to be very happy though....we'l probably see some of his daddy coming out then.  great update, btw.

Clockwork-axeman876: Sorry about the delays in posting, but I had only planned to post on this fic once a week, due to the other stories I've got going.
MU: I don;t know if I'd count Mara out yet...
divapilot: But is the Borg Queen's accumulated knowledge a match for an "energy field created by all living things?"
Kara: Yeah, attacking those close to Luke is a good way to get yourself in deep poodoo.
FLYSWATTER: Luke's faced this challenge time and again. Look at Vader, threatening Leia on the Death Star. Not a smart move on the Dark Lord's part, was it?
smiley: One thing I've learned, is never to underestimate Mara Jade.
tannim: She does expect Luke to surrender, but that's because she doesn't know what the Jedi are truly capable of.
Petra: If the Borg do assimilate Mara, Luke might have to do to the Borg what Anakin did to the Tuskens. And that would not be a good thing.
Leona: I'd say that Mara still has a sya in things.
tejdog: Indeed.
Okay, I know everybody's been waiting with baited breath. Here's the next post!
Luke looked at Mara, held between the drones. Her gaze was similarly locked on his. Don't do it, Farmboy, he heard in his mind, as clearly as if Mara had actually said the words. Don't even think about it.
"There's an old Camaasi saying about not submitting to evil," Luke said. "In fact, it's that creed that helped set the Jedi on their path, teaching them to use their abilities to serve rather than to dominate. I'm afraid that I have to decline your offer, your Majesty."
"Then I shall take these abilities that you're so determined to protect by force," The Queen said. She merely gazed at the drones holding Mara, and before Luke could blink, one had snapped its hand up, injecting its nanoprobes into Mara's neck. "You've failed, my young friend. Already, I can feel what it is like to control this Force of yours."
Luke wasn't looking at the Queen, but rather at Mara. Her eyes were almost closed, and Luke would only see a hint of white.. He could see grey mottling beginning to appear as the nanoprobes spread through her blood corrupting it. Fight it, Mara, he thought, reaching towards her with the Force. Fight it like you've never fought anything before.
Then he felt it, a touch against his mind that could only be his wife. It didn't have the cold, monolithic feel that he got from the Queen and her drones, but rather the spark of individuality, the fierce competitive nature that had always characterized the woman he loved. What do you think I'm doing, Skywalker?
"You may be able to feel it, but you will never be able to use it," Luke said. "You may know what it feels like to merge with the Force, but you can't do it any more than I could breathe in a vacuum."
"But I can," the Queen said. "Maybe not myself, but your wife is little more than an instrument of my will." The Queen looked at Mara. "Assimilate him."
Mara's eyes opened, but there was no warmth to be found. Her green eyes chilled him to the core. "We will add your distinctiveness to our own," Mara said, her voice flat and unencumbered by emotion. The drones released her, and she called her lightsaber to her hand. She stepped towards Luke, extending a hand to him. "Join us, Farmboy."
"It's not going to happen," Luke said, turning to face Mara, the green blade of his lightsaber between himself and his wife. "Mara, I know you're still there."
"Resistance is futile," Mara said, igniting her own blade. Then she added, "Farmboy." Luke saw that from her elbows, a thin black fluid was slowly dripping. She's playing a role, he realized, and he felt her smile in the Force. Then he turned back to the Queen.
"You can assimilate a Jedi, but you cannot assimilate the Force," Luke said. "As long as the Force exists, there will be hope." Then he lunged at the Queen, his lightsaber rising and descending in a circular slash that cut through the Queen's torso. The drones lunged at Mara, who had spun to face them, igniting her lightsaber.
"You didn't really think they'd defeat me that easily, did you, Skywalker?"
"I couldn't be sure," Luke said, taking position back to back with Mara. Just like Nirauan all over again, isn't it?"
"Except that this time we know what we're doing," Mara said. He felt her reaching towards his mind, and reached for hers in turn. He felt the wonderful sensation of their minds meshing, melding. It truly was like nothing else in the universe. And as Mara covered his back, Luke stepped forward, stabbing the blade down through the face of the Borg Queen.
