[ Chapter 10 – Opening Hearts ]

Delicious. Was the only word for Orion’s cooking.

Jaina realised this man only bragged when it was the truth. And tonight he had definitely impressed her. A guy who knew his way around the kitchen was deadly attractive. Not that he wasn’t gorgeous already, she thought.

He had served the tastiest meal: A succulent nerf steak smothered in spicy herbs and marinated in a mixture of sweet fruit juices made her mouth water. It had an odd but scrumptious flavour about it. Sweet yet hot. This perfectly cooked meat was sided with chili dumplings in thick gravy, giant potato wedges, and pasta mixed with a variety of vegetables in a thin cream.

She was well and truly stuffed by the end.

He’d been right to boast. The man could cook a fantastic meal.

“. . Well?”

Jaina held up a glass of emerald wine and smiled,
“Here’s to the chef.”

He chuckled and inclined his head,
“Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.”

“It was exquisite.”

“To hear that from a Corellian is a huge compliment.” Grinned Orion, “You’re not easy people to impress.”

Giggling slightly, she assured him,
“Don’t worry. I think you’re passing expectations with flying colours.”

“Good.”

Placing her empty glass upon the table, Jaina leaned closer. Resting her chin on her clasped hands, she returned his smirk as she studied him quietly.

Orion moved to pour himself another Chandrilan brandy when she stopped him.

The touch of her hand made his heart pause a beat.

Her delicate fingers moved his hand away. She picked up the small brandy bottle and poured him a drink. He took the glass she offered, drank slowly, all the while his eyes watched her.

“Ever tried Chandrilan brandy?”

Jaina raised a challenging eyebrow and asked,
“Is it as good as my father’s stash of Corellian brandies?”

Shrugging nonchalantly he replied,
“Its good enough for me and my Chandrilan mates. I used to get drunk on it quite a lot when I was younger.”

He handed her the brandy. After a tentative sip Jaina nodded in approval.

“Not bad,” she handed it back, “Not bad at all.”

After a pause, Orion asked,
“You know your beverages well. But what about food? Do you cook?”

“Honestly its one thing I try to avoid.” Jaina smiled as she admitted, “It’s not a talent that runs in my family. Flying, gunning, and blowing up stuff, now that I can do with my eyes closed.”

His gorgeous laughter set her heart on fire. He poured her another glass of wine and spoke warmly,
“Now, that I believe wholeheartedly. I’m not naïve. I have heard about your reputation.”

“All bad I’m sure.” She jested.

Shaking his head earnestly, he was quick to comfort her,
“Not at all. In fact, the galaxy has nothing but compliments to give you.”

“What did you hear?”

Gazing at her solemnly, he answered,
“I heard you were harsh but fair. Tough, very independent and a fighter till the end. You’re the Sword of the Jedi. Predicted to have a troublesome life, but to also bring peace and protection to all you help. I know from just having met you, that you give your all and ask for nothing in return.” A gentle smile curved at his lips as he added, “It’s rare to find someone so beautiful, with a warm heart to match.”

Jaina suddenly felt self-conscious hearing such a description of her self. Modest, she couldn’t stop from turning slightly red in the face. It was flattering to be thought of in that way. And for some reason she knew that if anyone else had tried saying such things, she would have thrown it back with a shrug.

But with Orion it was different. He had spoken so sincerely that it had stunned her. It felt real and truthful coming from his mouth.

“You shouldn’t believe everything you hear…” She tried to control her blush.

Thoughtfully he looked at her, and replied,
“Maybe. But in this case, I think I’m safe.”

There was a short silence.

“You read people instinctively,” Jaina commented quietly, “I sense it. You’re very perceptive. You’re Force-sensitive.”

Intrigued, Orion frowned,
“You can tell that? Just by sitting and talking with me? Don’t you need to test me?”

“I can feel the Force. It lies in you, dormant but strong.”

Orion already knew what she spoke of. When he was a boy he had been told he had special qualities. He had always had quick reflexes, had confident instincts and even had occasions of sensing or seeing things before they happened. It was these qualities that gave Orion a cutting edge in racing.

Despite knowing his Force talent, he had never wanted to become a Jedi of any sort. Piloting and racing had been his love since he could walk.

Decisively Orion decided to share something with her, that he had not told anyone,
“I’ve known of my Force potential since I was a kid. And I think I know where it comes from….My grandfather told me something when I was very young. He spoke of our ancestors and their stories. But there was one story in particular that held my attention. He said we had a Jedi in the family history. I don’t remember the name. But the story goes that: one of my great-great grandfathers was a Jedi, a healer to be specific. He wasn’t famous. But I’d like to think he was a man of principle, of great heart and courage. Apparently he left the Jedi Order for something more important. He fell in love. Instead of living a life of loneliness, he chose to have a life of family. .”

“Sounds like a brave man to choose heart over duty.” Jaina noted, “If the Jedi Order today, had the same rules as the Old Republic Order, I’m not sure I could choose. Being a Jedi is everything I know and love. It’s my life. To give that up for love is a great thing.”

“I agree.” He murmured, deep in thought, “I wonder how it all played out. It must have been a big commotion back then to do such a thing.” His blue eyes focused back on her as he added, “But I’m sure my family history is dull in comparison to yours.”

“No, not dull at all. Just be grateful your history is kept far more private.” Changing the subject slightly, Jaina asked, “It’s a shame you don’t remember the name. . . Does Pedro know he’s the descendent of a Jedi?”

Giving her an amused stare, Orion replied,
“The kid doesn’t sit still enough to tell him anything. He has no patience to hear such stories.”

“I bet a thousand credits that you were exactly like him at that age.” She said sipping more of her wine.

Nodding guilty, he responded,
“Yeah, I was. Which is probably why I don’t remember the Jedi’s name.”

“That doesn’t matter so much.” Jaina reassured him, “You still have the story to tell. That’s enough.”

Pausing for a second, Orion frowned curiously at her,
“Could Pedro be Force-sensitive too?”

“It’s very likely that he is. The trait tends to be passed on genetically. I know whole families of Jedi, not just my own.”

“I understand you were brought up as a Jedi. I don’t know if I agree with bringing up children in such circumstances.” He expressed his views frankly, “It’s like forcing them into a lifetime career, without any choice for something else.”

“It can appear a little harsh and unfair. Jedi life isn’t easy.” Jaina confessed, “My own twin questioned whether or not he should serve the Order and the Force. He experimented with other career options and came to a decision to continue his Jedi training. I think the Order we have today is very different to the one before it. We have Jedi who live complicated lives, full of duty and family. Jedi vary so much now, some are: doctors, business people, traders, pilots, soldiers, and some are ordinary citizens with other careers on the go. We don’t force beings or children into it. We just help show them their potential.”

“You really love what you do?” He queried softly, “Even after all you and your family has been through?”

“I’ll admit, I have thought many times about changing my career. But I know that if I did, I wouldn’t be happy. It’s a part of my identity.” Proudly, Jaina simply stated, “I am a Jedi. It’s what I do best.”

“Would you bring up your children as Jedi?”

“Probably. I’d like to.” She added jokingly, “But I don’t see that happening any time soon.”

Gazing intently at her dark eyes, he cautioned her good-humouredly,
“Never say never.”

“What about you? You want to have any more kids?”

Giving her a winning grin, he confessed a sentimental wish,
“I’d like a whole house full of them. I’m terrible though, I’d let them get away with murder and spoil ‘em rotten.”

Thoughtfully, he glanced around his apartment, then returned his gaze to Jaina to say, “I’ve done the parties, the boozing, and the womanising . . its not my thing anymore. I want a family to fuss over, to care for and love. A bunch of little troublesome Signoretti’s sounds like my cup of caf right now.”

Fascinated by his declaration, Jaina stared at him, somewhat stunned.
“I thought women were supposed to be the broody ones.”

He chuckled,
“I know, I am broody I suppose. But I can’t help it.” Sobering slightly he told her, “It’s just I’m sick of the silence in my home. When Pedro’s here, there’s life and noise, it feels almost complete. But then I have to drop him off, back to his mother. And each time I say goodbye and return to my quiet home, its cuts me up inside. Because.. a home is pointless without someone to come home to.”

Mutely, Jaina nodded in agreement. Ever since losing her husband, Jaina had never felt comfortable in her apartment. The silence was deadly. She understood the loneliness he described. It did hurt. Without someone there, home became just a word.

A home is where the heart is. And Jaina’s heart and love had died along with her husband.

Slowly though, she felt her heart starting to heal. Just by having Orion’s company, the sound of his voice and echo of his laugh helped her to ignore the quiet. She didn’t feel so alone anymore.

“You know…” Jaina spoke lowly, “I think that’s the most truthful thing I’ve ever heard.”

“Really?” He bantered, “I think I’ve had too much to drink.”

She laughed as he checked the amount left in the brandy bottle.

Orion smiled, but it faltered. He cleared his throat and sat straighter.

Suddenly he seemed very uncomfortable.

A tic began to work at his jaw for several seconds. His expression turned sober. Gripping his glass tightly he swigged the last of its contents and rose up from the table.

His abrupt change in mood had Jaina perplexed.

“You okay?”

He offered her a small smile and answered,
“I just forgot something. You can relax on the sofa if you want. I’ll just clear the table.”

Accepting that, Jaina rose from her seat,
“Okay, if you’re sure.”

“Absolutely, please by all means make yourself at home.”

He gathered up the cutlery and strolled into the kitchen. Meanwhile Jaina got comfortable on one of the couches.

With gritted teeth he set the plates down on the side. He clenched his hands to stop them from shaking. The evening had been going so well. But Orion had forgotten to take something.

It didn’t happen as often as it used to, but occasionally he suffered from severe episodes of painful spasms in his muscles and ligaments. Most of the pain came from his back and shoulders. Sometimes the agony was so intense he couldn’t move. Hopefully though this attack wouldn’t be so vicious.

Not wanting to worry Jaina, he said nothing. And tried to act as casual as possible.

He headed for the medicine cabinet and tried to carefully pull out a little brief case. His flesh fingers and palm was trembling and sweating so badly that the case slipped through his grasp. Under his breath he cursed.

She heard a loud clutter from the kitchen.

“Orion? You okay?”

Sensing something was wrong, Jaina examined him in the Force very subtly.

Agony slammed into her senses. But it wasn’t hers. What she felt of it was very brutal.

Jagged pain was ruthlessly ripping through Orion’s back muscles and spine. It was spasms of soreness jolting his body, getting stronger and more excruciating. No wonder Orion was distracted and unlike himself all of a sudden.

Noiselessly, she rose from her seat and went to the open doorway he had vanished through. In the kitchen, on his knees, in obvious pain, was Orion. He was trying to open a little case, but having difficulty.

Without thinking, she ran forward and kneeled down beside him,
“Here, let me.”

Orion allowed her to take the case and help open it. She laid it out on the floor unsure of what to do next to aid him.

He nodded rigidly, clearly trying not to show just how much pain he was in.
“T-Thank you.”

Carelessly he routed through the case, which had a variety of medicines stocked in it. He stopped once he found the shot he needed. Roughly he tugged at the sleeve covering his right flesh arm, rolled back the clothing to inject a shot of painkiller called symoxin into his blood.

After a few seconds, the relief was almost instant. His trembling came to a stop and his breathing slowly returned to normal. The agony gradually faded away.

Feeling very exposed, Orion was almost too embarrassed to look at her.

“I. . I’m sorry you had to see me like that.” He whispered shakily.

Concerned, Jaina supported him to his feet.
“What was that? Why were you in such pain?”

“It just happens sometimes.”

Gradually, they walked back into the living room. Jaina stayed at his side, helping him walk steady. As they got settled on the large sofa, Orion was considering whether or not he should try to explain.

“Orion, please tell me what just happened?”

Eventually he decided to confide in her.

“. . I have medical problems, permanent ones. They are internal. In the pod crash I damaged my back and my spine in particular. It’s like the effects of whiplash, only worse. I slipped, cracked and crushed several discs in my spinal cord. To top it off, I snapped and tore muscles throughout my back and shoulders. My muscles are healing but very slowly. My spine however, will never completely heal. Surgery is an option, but there’s no guarantee of a full recovery if I do have another operation.”

Solemnly he admitted, “I take painkillers daily to resume some kind of normal life. Tonight I just forgot to take my regular dose.”

“Kriff,” Jaina swore softly, “Orion.. I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be.” He took her hand. “Thank you for helping me in there.”

“You’re welcome.”

Dejectedly Orion said,
“I don’t let many people see that side of me. The weak side. Not even my parents know about the heavy medication I’m on.” His blue eyes glimpsed at her guilty as he clarified, “They think I’m off the drugs.”

“Why’d they think that?” Jaina probed gently.

Dismayingly he leaned his head back on the couch and stared up at the ceiling. He felt guilty for lying to his parents. But he didn’t want them or anyone else to worry about his problems. He was a grown man. He should overcome his own obstacles and not have to depend on others to help him.

If his mother and father knew about the amount of drugs he took just to not feel pain, they’d worry about him constantly. He didn’t want that. He wanted to be normal again. Or at the very least, appear normal.

“Because.. I told them.” Orion answered reluctantly, “A few months ago, I told my parents I was off the medication and starting to fully heal. They were happier hearing that. I don’t want to worry them.”

“Does Pedro know about your condition?” She asked, truly concerned.

“Unfortunately, yes.” He toyed with and focused on Jaina’s hand, as he went on, “Natalia told him, even after I asked her not to.”

“Why did you not want Pedro to know?”

“Because I’m his father!” Orion bit back a little, obviously upset, “He’s just a kid, he shouldn’t have to worry about such things. My health is my business. Pedro should worry about what game he’s going to play next, or what cereal to have for breakfast, or what cartoon to watch on the HoloNet. A four year old boy shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not his daddy will collapse at any moment. He shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not his dad will drop him because he’s too weak to hold him up. It’s wrong. Parents worry, kids don’t, and that’s how it should be.”

Speechless, Jaina just sat there watching him.

With that outburst, Orion had shown just how much he loved and considered his son. Unconsciously, Orion had revealed his selfless warm heart. It showed a side of him, she found most endearing. He was a passionate father, full of so much adoration and caring. Pedro was lucky to have such a great daddy.

When he didn’t continue, she said simply,
“You miss him…”

With glistening eyes, Orion replied,
“Every day.” Sadly he smiled, “There’s a part of myself walking around the galaxy . . and I’m not there to witness it. He’s my little boy.”

“He’s a lucky kid to have you as his dad.”

Out of the blue, he brought her knuckle to his lips and kissed her hand.
“You’re too kind Jaina. Thank you.”

Without thinking Orion clutched her hand tighter. Her fingers twined with his felt right. At ease, he sighed and sank further into the sofa. Jaina joined him. Getting comfy, she rested her legs over his and leaned her forehead on his shoulder.

Orion savoured the moment, allowing the peace and contentment to wash over him. It had been so long since he had felt anything close to what he experienced with Jaina. Being around her was intoxicating. He felt close to her, like he could trust her with his very soul and knew she would never disappoint him.

Sweet gods help him, he wanted her. All of her.

He kissed her lush brunette locks and inhaled her scent.

“I like this..” He murmured, “You and me.”

Jaina looked up at him. The comfort of his presence overwhelmed her. She edged closer. Warmth radiated from his body, drawing her in, making her want to press against him. He projected a sense of protection, of acceptance, and understanding. She wanted to lean into him, for his support and affection.

Guilt of betraying Calvin seeped into her heart. She drew in a deep breath. And when she let it out, she let go of the shame. The painful memories tried to hold on, but she brushed them away in her mind.

She couldn’t keep holding on any more. The darkness of grief was swallowing her. She had to stop it. Otherwise she’d never be happy. After so much loss and hurt, didn’t she deserve a little joy?

Mentally she whispered, ‘Forgive me Calvin.. I can’t hold on forever.’

She shed the sorrow and replaced it with acceptance. Calvin was gone. The past couldn’t be changed or argued with, but the future could. And right then, she wanted that future to include Orion. To do that, she had to let go of the past. Finally, after so many days and nights of being haunted by his passing, Jaina let it go.

Feeling lighter all of a sudden, Jaina gazed at Orion’s gorgeous face.

Entranced, she admired him, as if memorizing his features. She feathered her fingertips over his face, pausing at his delectable lips. He leaned into her hand, kissed her fingers and relished her every touch.

She breathed into his ear,
“Kiss me…”

Orion caught her wandering hand and placed a tender kiss onto the centre of her palm. Treasuring the taste and softness of her skin. The blue in his striking eyes darkened. He moved closer, his mouth hovered over hers. The temptation to hold and have her was unbearable, for he knew he couldn’t resist. Around her he had no strength, no façade to hide behind; his soul was naked to her eyes.

She saw him for what he really was: just a man, a lonely man.

Heat began to boil within Jaina. Her blood was rushing through her veins. And her heart started to quicken its pace. His every breath whispered against her skin, teasing her senses. She froze as he lightly pecked her cheek, brushing the corner of her mouth as he did. Instinctively she turned into his kiss.

There was a moment’s pause.

Desperate to sample her passion, Orion captured her parted lips and was lost.

She kissed him feverishly.

He cupped her face in his hands and returned her hot kiss. She scorched him with her fervour. It felt like she was persuading him to fall even further, to give her everything that he was. Every caress of her lips burned onto his memory. He wanted to cherish her every thought, action, word and touch, for fear she may vanish.

Nipping her bottom lip, he danced his tongue with hers. She was more delicious than he remembered, so sweet. He couldn’t get enough, he didn’t think he ever could.

Jaina’s hands clutched at his shoulders, holding him near. She lost herself in his embrace. Joy rose up within her. She smiled into his kiss, loving the way his lips moved against hers. Every hormone in her body went on alert. Her body sizzled with lustful needs. She longed for him, heart, body and soul. It was irrational, too soon, rash, but true.

Breathless, they paused for air. They gazed at each other for a long moment. Simultaneously they smiled.

“I know this may be a bit late to ask. .” Orion chuckled, “but, do you wanna go out? Officially I mean.”

Giggling like a happy teenager, Jaina replied,
“That depends….”

Distractedly, Orion started to nibble up and down her neck,
“Depends? . . On what?”

“Is every kiss going to be like that one?”

“Better, Jaina, it’ll only get better.”

“Prove it.”

Shortly after those two words left her lips, he did. Over and over.

Well? mischief

Well, that brought in a few interesting aspects. First of all, and yes, I really must comment on this, the dinner was awesome. Seriously, when men know how to cook, they KNOW how to cook. That description of the meal made my mouth water. wink

Orion's little problem with his back showed a very interesting side to him that we haven't seen before. I love how much you show his love for his son, and how much it hurts him to not have Pedro around.

And YAY! Jaina finally got past her guilt thing. 'Bout time. Hehehe, I wonder what Mara will have to say about this. wink Something along the lines of "I told you so," I can imagine. grin

I loved the meal...what woman doesn't love a man who can cook? love
I know! A guy who can cook a great meal is hot in my book.. food is the way to my heart a lot of the time. Lol.
Poor Orion he really was torn apart in that accident. But yay, he's Force-sensitive maybe Jaina can teach him some Force healing techniques to help.
Bless him, but you're right he's got Jaina now to help him heal! tongue
And finally, wow...that was some kiss! kiss
happy I'm never confident about writing kisses, but this one just seemed to write itself. Glad ya liked it!
Wonderful, Louise....as always... I love this story.
blush Again, thank you.. good to know you enjoy it.

Sorry about the delay, DRL is getting very busy lately. Uni and work is getting in the way. But in a week or so I should have more spare time to come back to this. There will be an update up within the next 2 weeks.

My apologies. Thanks for waiting. Your support is great! peace
