Title: He Said, She Said
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: Luke, Mara
Summary: Love is complicated; love hurts; love stinks.
Notes: Based on the song “I’ll See it Through” by Texas. And I have no idea what the Star Wars equivalent of boxers are, so I just went with what I know. tongue

He Said, She Said

When you touch me
I feel there's nothing you can do to turn me away
And I know that
In the past you've had bad luck so I should help you stay

You're all I ever wanted
You're all I ever needed, it's you
You're all I've ever wanted
And loving you's the right thing to do
And I'll see it through

His hand brushed across her shoulder – accidentally of course. Luke bit his lip and turned away, deliberately tamping down his chaotic emotions in the Force. With Jade, one had to be careful, he mused. She was so damned perceptive.

“Got everything you need?” he asked in what he hoped was a polite, though somewhat detached voice. It was best to keep things professional for now.

For now? Where the hell had that come from?

“I’ve got everything, Skywalker,” Mara muttered with more than a touch of impatience. She eyed him carefully. “What’s got your boxers in a bunch?” she asked bluntly.

He quirked one eyebrow at her. “Boxers?” he asked.

Mara shrugged. “Listen, I don’t want to know what you wear under those Jedi robes,” she informed him haughtily. “I’m just making conversation.” She smirked at him. “So don’t get your boxers in a bunch.”

With that, she gave a self-satisfied snort of laughter and turned, gliding up the ramp to her ship with a lethal grace that Luke could not help but admire.

Shaking his head and smiling like an idiot the whole time, he watched as she closed the hatch without a backward glance.

That was Mara.

Never look back.

~~~~~~~~~~
Mara’s shoulder tingled where Luke had brushed against her.
He did that a lot.
If she hadn’t known better she might have thought he did it deliberately.
No.
Too bizarre. Skywalker had ice water in his veins. And besides, a guy like that most certainly did not get interested in a woman like her. Not that she’d want him to anyway.
She hauled her pack onto her shoulder and once more thanked the Force that she wasn’t one of those females who felt compelled to lug around the contents of a women’s clothing store. Give her a few changes of clothes, and a host of weapons, and she was ready to travel. Who needed cosmetics when you had a handy little blaster?
“Got everything you need?” Luke asked, and his voice sounded funny. Sort of strained. Something odd swirled briefly in the Force before it disappeared.
Interesting.
“I’ve got everything, Skywalker,” she muttered. “What’s got your boxers in a bunch?”
Yes, Skywalker, what exactly do you wear under those infuriatingly loose Jedi robes? She stopped. Where the hell had that come from?
Luke was staring at her, bemused and embarrassed. Stars it was fun to goad the farmboy. All too easy, she thought with a touch of dark amusement.
“Boxers?” he asked, trying to look like a dignified Jedi Master – and failing miserably.
“Listen, I don’t want to know what you wear under those Jedi robes.” And I wonder how long it would take me to get you out of them? “I’m just making conversation.” What I’d really like to do is make love. “So don’t get your boxers in a bunch.”
Because I just might be tempted to remove them to spare you the discomfort.
She laughed at the image of Luke’s shocked face if she hitched her thumbs in his tunics and gave them a good shove off his chest. Not looking back, but exquisitely aware of Luke standing there – watching her – she closed the hatch behind her.
Don’t look back, Jade. Or you’ll be tempted to go up to him and give him a big wet kiss just to see what he does.
When I close my eyes
And think of you it takes me places that I've never seen
And the rain, it blows
You're brushing up against my skin to wash me clean
You're all I ever wanted
You're all I ever needed - it's you
You're all I've ever wanted
And loving you's the right thing to do
And I'll see it through
She swam like a water nymph, he thought. Her red hair streamed behind as her strokes took her back and forth across the small lake. When she paused for a moment to merely float in the water, eyes closed, he decided to make his presence known.
“You want to be alone?” Luke’ called out from the shore. I sure hope not.
Without opening her eyes, Mara answered, “There’s enough room for two of us in this lake.”
He didn’t need any further prompting and quickly stripped down to what was necessary to maintain modesty. He splashed into the water, giving a yelp at the cold temperature. Why didn’t she warn me? He heard Mara laugh but ignored it.
Plunging under the water, he swam to where she was. When he surfaced she was upright, treading water. “Boxers,” she murmured. “I knew it.”
“What’re you talking about?” His teeth chattered slightly. Mara, however, appeared perfectly comfortable. Damn it.
“I knew you’d wear boxers,” she told him with a grin. “A woman knows these things.”
“So you have been imagining me without the robes,” he said with a wicked leer. Thank the Force I’m not the only one having those sorts of thoughts.
She moved in closer and Luke held his breath. Am I finally going to find out what her lips taste like? Mara gave him a wink and just before she dove into the water, she whispered, “It’s amazing what you’ll do to pass the time when you’re bored.”
~~~~~~~

The water was cold, but Mara wasn’t ready to get out. She sensed Luke coming closer, his gentle presence in the Force a beacon that announced his arrival. Deciding to ignore him for the moment, she continued swimming. She almost smiled when she sensed him stop on the shore and watch her.

At last, growing tired, she stopped and floated on her back. She wondered how long it would take his conscience to prompt him to announce his presence.

“You want to be alone?” he called out. That didn’t take long.

Keeping her eyes closed, afraid she would laugh if she looked at him standing there so hopefully on the edge of the water, she answered, “There’s enough room for two of us in this lake.”

She could almost hear his grin. There was the hurried sound of clothing being removed. At last the mystery will be solved. Then there was a splash and howl of shock.

Stifling her laughter with great effort, she continued to float. That will keep him in his place.

Then he was there beside her and she looked at him. His smile was an intriguing mixture of uncertainty and excitement. He likes being with me, she thought with a touch of disbelief. “Boxers,” she said. I’ve got a long memory, Skywalker.

“What’re you talking about?” The words were a little distorted by the chattering of his teeth.

I could keep you warm.

“I knew you’d wear boxers.” She had to smile at the expression on his face. “A woman knows these things.” Think about that for a while.

“So you have been imagining me without the robes,” Luke answered with a knowing grin. There was too much satisfaction in that smile and Mara knew she had to take him down a peg or twelve.

Leaning in close, as if she just might give him a kiss, she winked and said, “It’s amazing what you’ll do to pass the time when you’re bored.”

“So…” Mara glanced at Luke. “What’re you doing here?”

“Just in the area,” Luke answered. “Heard you were around, so I thought I’d drop by.” I wanted to see if I still felt the same way about you. And damn it, I do.

“Oh,” she said, obviously still somewhat taken aback. “Well in that case, how about I buy you a drink?” And she motioned toward the barkeep.

“Whiskey,” Luke answered. “Make it a double.” He glanced at Mara, taking in the surprised expression. “I’ll pay.”

Shaking her head, Mara crossed her arms over her chest. “Last I heard, working for Karrde paid better than being a Jedi.” She pushed some credits across the bar. “Keep your credits, Skywalker.”

“Thanks,” Luke answered and sat down with a sigh. The whiskey was good, a smooth flame that coiled in his belly.

“So what’s Master Skywalker doing in this little corner of the galaxy?” Mara asked after he had taken a few sips.

“Just wanted to get away from Coruscant, I guess,” Luke answered. I wanted to find you.

“Well, you got away all right,” Mara answered with a look around. “Way away.”

Luke didn’t answer, just took another sip of whiskey. They were silent for a moment, and Luke appreciated the way Mara could simply sit in silence. She didn’t feel a need to fill the void with words, polite or otherwise.

“Something on your mind, farmboy?” she asked after a moment, flicking a curious look his way.

“Not much,” he answered. Nothing I’d tell you at any rate.

“All right then,” Mara answered. “Maintain your mysterious Jedi mystique. Fine by me.” She sounded slightly disgruntled.

Luke turned and leaned in close, told himself that it was the whiskey that made him do it. His lips hovered over hers for just a moment, just long enough to feel her surprised little gasp. “When’s the last time you were kissed?”

~~~~~~~~
Mara sensed something – someone – familiar and turned in surprise to see a pair of big blue eyes staring at her.
“So…” she drawled. “What’re you doing here?” And why am I so happy to see you?
“Just in the area,” he said, shifting on his feet. “Heard you were around, so I thought I’d drop by.”
“Oh.” Another good question: Why am I disappointed in your answer? “Well in that case, how about I buy you a drink?” She gestured for the barkeep. At least a drink will keep Luke around for a while. Though why I’d want to do that, I’m still not sure.
“Whiskey,” Luke answered. “Make it a double.”
The farmboy was having a double? Had Palpatine risen from the dead?
“I’ll pay.” He sounded chagrined at his lack of courtesy. It was kind of cute actually, even though it was equally laughable.
She shook her head and crossed her arms, smirking a little. “Last I heard, working for Karrde paid better than being a Jedi.” It was a small enough price to pay. “Keep your credits, Skywalker.”
“Thanks,” Luke answered and sat down with a sigh. He looks tired.
“So what’s Master Skywalker doing in this little corner of the galaxy?” You always seem to show up where I least expect you, don’t you, Skywalker?
“Just wanted to get away from Coruscant, I guess,” he said. Something odd was in his voice, but even as she observed that she watched him push it under the surface.
“Well, you got away all right,” Mara answered with a look around. “Way away.” In fact, she was pretty sure that this place was just a step or two above Tatooine in the remoteness factor. Not that she had looked it up or anything.
“Something on your mind, farmboy?” She had to break the silence; it was wearing on her nerves. Is it me on your mind perhaps? Does a woman like me get a chance like that? No. The answer to that was no.
“Not much,” he murmured.
“All right then,” Mara said. “Maintain your mysterious Jedi mystique. Fine by me.” And I’ll maintain my façade that I don’t care about anyone or anything besides myself and we’ll both be happy.
Luke turned and leaned in close and she could smell the bite of whiskey on his breath. His lips were so close to hers that all she would have to do is –
“When’s the last time you were kissed?”
Too long ago to remember…
Their lips touched.
I enjoyed that HUGELY. It's easy to forget when you go away how good the writers are here, and especially you. This was L/M at its finest. You have the unique ability to write what could be catagorized as mush--but isn't, somehow, simply because it's so real, so believable, and so darn lovable. Luke and Mara are intelligent here. I adore that. Plus, something that makes this stand out is the POVs of each scene. It satisfies a niggling desire I've always had in L/M stories to know what they're both thinking.
Anyhoo, AWESEOME fic! This is going on my list of favs.
