----------
Prologue
Hole In The World
----------
Numb.
He wanted to feel numb again. It was easier.
The pain was so ragged, so raw that he could hardly breathe.
She had been a part of him in every way. Then she was gone. Now there was a hole in his world, and it could never be filled.
Luke took a deep breath, fighting past the tightness in his chest. He slowly exhaled, and the quiet sound echoed in the dark room. In the days since his battle with Lumiya, since the torturous journey back to Coruscant, he had hardly left. Just off the main Council chamber, it was his much-begroaned, de facto office. Mara laughing dubbed it the “Inner Sanctum.” And while every inch was space was inundated with memories of her- a holo displayed here, a houldout blaster holster discarded there- it was easier than going home.
It was also the first time he’d been alone since his return. Jaina and Ben turned into his shadows, trailing him everywhere. It was all they could do; neither knew what to say. As long as they focused on holding Luke together, they wouldn’t have to fall apart. At the moment, they were on their way to the Temple’s landing pad. Han and Leia were on approach. The plan was to sneak them into the Temple before the Guard was alerted to their presence on the planet. Before she left, Jaina told him to get some sleep. It didn’t matter if he did. The hole would still be there tomorrow.
Luke stood and stretched. He had been sitting for far too long. There had to be something he could do…anything. He tried to meditate, to seek guidance, but everything was under a cloud of fear and sorrow. Bitter frustration gnawed at him. Of their own accord, his fists clenched. Frustration morphed into anger.
Sith. I will destroy…
Immediately, he clamped down on his feelings, waiting for the exasperated “Farmboy” in the back of his mind…
That would never come again.
He fell back into his chair and buried his head in his hands. It took all his strength to will the tears not to return.
----------
The military corridor was buzzing with activity. Officers scurried around, carrying datapads of utmost importance and greatest secrecy. Most were so absorbed in their own little battles that they scarcely noticed the two men in dark robes. Within breaking stride, they moved unerringly toward the office of Admiral- and now acting co-Chief of State- Cha Niathal.
When they reached the outer office, the young Lieutenant didn’t even spare them a glance. “I’m sorry; you’ll have to return later. The Admiral is terribly busy now and running behind schedule as it is. Please give our office a call and we can schedule an appointment some time in the future.”
“I think the Admiral will want to see us now,” the taller of the two men said.
“As I said, she’s already-” the lieutenant finally looked up from his datapad. “Masters,” he yelped. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t recognize you. Just a moment please.” With an apologetic smile, he turned away to inform his commanding officer of her visitors.
The shorter man sighed. The taller- and younger- of the two men looked as if he wanted to say something, but just shook his head. They waited in silence.
Finally, the young officer turned back their way. “The Admiral will see you now. And, again, my deepest apologies.”
The door to the inner office sprang open and a rush of cool, moist air escaped. Inside, they could see the Mon Calamari officer rising from her desk. Her webbed hands were spread wide in a gesture of greeting. The two men entered the room.
“Master Horn, Master Durron- what an unexpected pleasure. It’s not everyday that two of the most illustrious members of the Jedi Council stop by my office.” She paused, then continued in a more sincere voice, “Please express my deepest sympathies to Master Skywalker. Mara Jade Skywalker has done much for the Galactic Alliance and her presence will be sorely missed.”
“Thank you,” Corran said. “I’ll be sure to pass that along.”
“Now, what can I do for you gentlemen,” the admiral asked brusquely, quickly shifting gears. “I’m sure that this is not a social call.”
Kyp leaned forward, looking uncomfortable. “We’ve got something of a personal favor to ask of you.”
Niathal’s eyes swiveled in his direction. “Really. What might that be?”
Now Corran leaned forward and matched Kyp’s position. “We would like you to consider granting temporary amnesty to Han and Leia Solo. Nothing permanent or a pardon, just an arrangement so that they can be present for the funeral.”
“That would be highly unorthodox. And while it is not exactly conspiring with the enemy, it could be perceived-”
Kyp cut her off with a humorless snort. “Admiral, considering who it is and the circumstances, I think that the public will be forgiving.”
Niathal considered them both for a long moment. It was clear that they weren’t comfortable with begging. She considered the situation. Public opinion would fall on the side of the Solo’s and Skywalker. And in the coming battle over who would be anointed, public opinion would be an asset.
“Did they ask you to do this?”
“No,” Corran replied. “No one else knows we’re here.”
“Then why are you here?”
The two Jedi shared a helpless, hopeless look. “It’s all we can do,” Kyp said quietly.
“And the Solo’s will probably come here regardless of what I say, correct.”
Definitely
, both men thought to themselves. To Niathal, however, Corran merely said, “It’s possible.”
“Alright then. I’ll arrange it all.”
Kyp and Corran quickly stood and nodded respectfully to the admiral. It was clear that they wanted to leave as soon as possible.
“Just one more question,” Niathal said. “Why didn’t you go to Colonel Solo with this?”
Startled, Kyp and Corran simply shrugged. The thought of going to Jacen had never once crossed their minds.
--------
Jaina and Ben walked along the corridors of the Jedi Temple in silence. Although it wasn’t particularly late, there weren’t many people moving about. They were on their way to the Temple’s private spaceport to meet Han and Leia. They were coming for Luke, and for themselves if the truth were told. Family needed family. It would be dangerous for them to attend the funeral; if the Guard was serious about having them arrested, that would be the first place they would look. It didn’t matter to Han and Leia, though. Some things were too important to worry about outstanding warrants.
Jaina looked at her cousin out of the corner of her eye. Honestly, Ben was a little nervous. The last time he saw his aunt and uncle, he tried to arrest them. And while he really should be thinking about doing it again, he couldn’t bring himself to consider it. For a Jedi and active member of the Guard, he wasn’t doing a very good job at disguising his feelings. “Don’t worry about it. It’s the last thing that they’ll be thinking about.”
Surprised, Ben turned and stared at her. Jaina took a moment to really look at him. While they had been together for the last few days, most of her focus was split between comforting Luke and dealing with her own grief. Her younger cousin seemed so much older, so much more mature, and so weary that it derailed her train of thought.
“C’mon,” she said finally, wrapping her arm around his shoulders. “Let’s go find my mom and dad before they really do get arrested.”
They hadn’t gotten more than half way down the corridor before Jaina’s comlink buzzed in her pocket. Curious, she fished it out of her jumpsuit’s pocket and thumbed in on.
“Solo.”
“Jaina, you can tell your parents that they don’t have to hide now.”
“Kyp?” Jaina asked, confused. “What’s going on? What are you talking about.”
“We- Corran and I- talked to Niathal. When Han and Leia get here, they won’t have to worry about being arrested. They’ve got temporary amnesty for the funeral.”
Jaina stared at her comlink in disbelief. It seemed too good to be true. On a level that she didn’t really want to think about, it bothered her deeply that it had come to this. Instead, she chose to accept it for the gift that it was.
“Thank you,” she choked out.
“It’s the least we can do for Master Skywalker. If you need anything, you know where to find us. Say hi to your parents for me.” With that, Kyp ended the call.
“Well,” Ben said after a moment, “that makes things easier.”
The two Jedi continued on their way, taking less care to mask their presence in the Force. At the end of the corridor a door slip open, sensors having detected their approach. Privacy shields dampened the ambient noises of the Coruscant night beyond the landing pad. Still, the distinctive whine of the
Falcon’s
engines cut through the hallway. From what Jaina could see, it was close to a perfect landing- not that it was unusual, assuming of course that the
Falcon
was in a good mood and not in dire need of repair.
Jaina could hardly have been less interested in Han’s piloting technique. She needed her parents, needed them in a way that she hadn’t needed them for years. Jaina sped up, reaching the
Falcon
as the boarding ramp started to lower.
Leia was the first down the ramp. Without a word, she enveloped Jaina in her arms. They clung together. It wasn’t clear who was supporting who. After a moment, Leia spoke.
“Where is he?” she asked, voice tight and raw. She didn’t even bother to ask how he was. There was no need. Leia knew her brother.
“His office.”
“And Ben?”
For the briefest second, Jaina’s eyes darted to Ben. “He’s trying to stay tough- maybe trying too hard. Angry. Tired. I don’t know.” Jaina rubbed the heel of her palm into her eyes. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“I couldn’t be anywhere else- arrest warrant or not.”
“About that…I don’t know how, but Kyp and Corran worked out a temporary deal. While you and dad are here for the…ceremony, you won’t be arrested.”
“That’s good,” Leia replied distractedly.
“Go,” Jaina said. “I’ll stay and meet dad.”
With a final embrace, Leia hurried into the building to comfort and grieve with her brother. When she reached the doorway, Leia stopped and turned to Ben. He willing stepped into her embrace, but ended it quickly. It was clear that Leia was torn between comforting her nephew and seeking out her brother. Ben made the decision for her when he turned and walked toward Jaina. With a final anguished expression, Leia disappeared into the corridor.
A hand fell on Jaina’s shoulder, startling her out of her reverie. She turned and saw her father, face haggard and lined. He pulled her into a one-armed embrace.
“Hey, kid.”
“Hey, dad.”
“How are you doin’?” he asked gently.
Jaina just shook her head. She still wasn’t ready to deal with the grief of losing her former master. It was easier to focus on Luke and Ben, to deal with the details and logistics. If she really stopped to think about how she was doing, she would fall apart. Denial and avoidance were her preferred methods of coping.
Han understood perfectly. He wrapped his other arm around his daughter and just held her. It didn’t matter that Jaina was in her thirties; his little girl was hurting.
Eventually, Jaina sighed and pulled back. With a quick jerk of her head, she directed Han’s attention to Ben. The teen was standing near the door, looking lost and lonely.
Han got the hint. “C’mere, kid.”
With a hesitant expression, Ben stepped out of the shadows. He stopped a few feet from Han and Jaina.
“Why don’t you stay the night with us, kid? Assuming, of course, that
we’ve
got somewhere to stay?” he half-asked Jaina.
“That might be a good thing to know before you start inviting company, dad,” Jaina tried to joke unsuccessfully. “I’ve got a couple of the guest rooms set up.”
“Are you sure?” Ben asked. It was clear that he was uncomfortable. He made for a strange sight: a teenager in harsh uniform, the pursed lips of a child beneath the weary eyes of a veteran. “I mean,” he continued, “the last time I saw you, I tried to arrest you.”
Han clamped a comforting hand on his shoulder. “I don’t have nearly enough time to hold a grudge against everyone who’s tried to arrest me- and that’s just counting the people I call friends. Forget about it.”
The three left the landing pad. The further they got away from the Falcon, the more uncomfortable the silence became. It was too much for Jaina. She blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
“Dad, just so you know, you don’t have to worry about the arrest warrant that Jacen issued…” She trailed off, confused by the cold flash in Ben’s eyes at the mention of her brother’s name. He shrugged off Han’s hand and stalked ahead.
“He’s angry,” she observed. It was hard to tell whether she was surprised or not.
Han watched him knowingly. “They say that anger is just love disappointed.” His voice hoarsened. “Trust me. I know.”
Jaina responded with a blank expression. “But what happens if Jacen thinks that love is just a state of mind?”
Han didn’t have an answer.
----------
[Chorus:]
There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a Cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.
They say that anger is just love disappointed.
They say that love is just a state of mind,
but all this fighting over who will be anointed.
Oh how can people be so blind
[Chorus:]
There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a Cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.
Oh they tell me there's a place over yonder,
cool water running through the burning sand,
until we we learn to love one
another we never reach the promise land.
[Chorus:]
There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a Cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.
[Repeat chorus: (no music)]
[Repeat chorus: 4x's (fade out)]

Hey!! First reply...
I must say, this is pure brillance.
I loved the entire thing and if doing a line by line review was my thing, I'd have to comment on every single line.
This was powerful and emotional and I actually teared up. Luke's grief was so potentant that I just wanted to hug him.
It was so nice to see Kyp and Corran work together in their own grief to get the amnesty for the Solos. It has been said somewhere that the Jedi Council are like family. They have grown together and lived and fought and died together for thirty years. Of course, they would grieve Mara's death as much as the family.
Oh the scene with Jaina and her parents. Poor Leia. Poor Ben. I really hope his family can heal the hole in his heart that, not only Jacen's betrayal and his mother's death put there, but also that Jacen's screwed up training had put there.
I really like where this is going...
BTW, the Eagles is one of my favorite bands of all time... I love their music and this is an awesomely creative way of writing a songfic.
And that song fit the situation so well... and I loved the way you were able to work in the lyrics so well that I did't even recognize it until I read the lyrics...

So glad to see that you've started this new story. I think it perfectly glides into place where Sacrifice sadly left off. Well done and I look forward to reading more.

That was brilliant, especially seeing as it was a prologue. I can't wait for you to get stuck into the actual story. I could feel the sadness radiating through the characters: Jaina being torn between her own grief and supporting her family.
Fabulous and if there's a PM list going, I'd love to be on it!

Thanks for sharing.

Quite an intriguing look at what might happen post-Sacrifice. Interesting how Corran et. al didn't go to Jacen to see if he would give permission… probably assuming he'd say no, eh?
If you're continuing this, I'd like a PM.

I think that's very true, about the Council being like a family. Sacrifice added some interesting development between Kyp and Mara that really showed that. Now that Mara is dead, they would definitely grieve, and I can't see them just sitting around doing nothing.
Poor Ben. I really hope his family can heal the hole in his heart that, not only Jacen's betrayal and his mother's death put there, but also that Jacen's screwed up training had put there.
Ben is going to need a lot of help after he finds out that his former hero killed his mother. More Skywalker family dynamics.
BTW, the Eagles is one of my favorite bands of all time... I love their music and this is an awesomely creative way of writing a songfic
I LOVE the Eagles. I had their greatest hits album on my ipod, and got listening to the words while rereading Exile and...this fic was born! I didn't want to do a straight up songfic, so this is a little bit experimental.

At the risk of losing my writing credentials, I have to admit that I wrote Jaina's response like my own response. I tend to push it away and deal with the details, trying to stay in control. And I don't even WANT to know what a shrink would say about that...

Thanks. I wanted to set up where the characters were emotionally before setting the story into motion.
I could feel the sadness radiating through the characters: Jaina being torn between her own grief and supporting her family
I hope the profic doesn't try to gloss over their grief in the next books. In some ways, I feel like Mara's death hits harder than Anakin's. He died in a war that most were pretty sure that they wouldn't survive, on a suicide mission, saving those he loved (in other words, the hero's death). Mara, on the other hand, was sudden, unexpected, and in unknown circumstances.
Fabulous and if there's a PM list going, I'd love to be on it!
Consider yourself added!

Interesting how Corran et. al didn't go to Jacen to see if he would give permission… probably assuming he'd say no, eh?
That's the idea that I'm operating under. I mean, it isn't often that the person who issues a warrant also agrees to suspend it. Not to mention, this isn't Corran and Kyp's first time around the block; they must know that there will be tension between Niathal and Jacen and that they can play them off each other (kinda like a kid working mom against dad).

Thanks for the wonderful response!
I'll see you next week with the next installment!

nice start, looks like this is gonna be a good fic. i can't wait to see Jacen's reaction to Niathal's granting of amnesty, as well as the most awkward funeral in GFFA history. and i love how Corran and Kyp worked together. as much as they may argue on the Council, Kyp was very right in Exile that the Jedi should always present an united front to the public and government.

That will be one sad and awkward funeral. The guest list will probably look more like a galactic political summit (think about it: there'll be Jedi, GA, Corellians, Hapans, maybe the odd Imperial, and one secret Sith)!
i love how Corran and Kyp worked together. as much as they may argue on the Council, Kyp was very right in Exile that the Jedi should always present an united front to the public and government.
Thanks, I thought it was a fun idea. Something about the idea of those two teaming up makes me smile. And I agree with you about Kyp being right regarding the Jedi. Things are so fractured and unstable, that the Jedi need to look together and united.

RE: If It All Fell To Pieces (Post-SACRIFICE, Whole Cast) Prologue: Hole in the World NEW STORY 6/28
I don't trust Niathal with this amnesty. I wouldn't put it past Jacen to arrest Han and Leia at the funeral regardless.
I feel for Ben and Jaina in this chapter. Hopefully, in canon we'll get to see them working on the same side together.
Can't wait for the next chapter.

I haven't really been following the LOTF series until now with all that happened in Sacrifice, but I must say that this has me highly intrigued. It's right in line with how I think the family would (will, I suppose) come together afterwards- awkward and fumbling because of events prior that have separated them so drastically, but with all the love they have for each other still there. When you get right down to it, they're family. They are all each other has.
Interesting how one approaches the notion of Jacen from such a perspective, now that I think about it.
Definitely looking forward to more!

Mediocrity- it takes a lot less time and most people won't notice the difference before it's too late.

I'm currently out of the country, and where I thought I would have internet access, I don't. So, the next update will be sometime after July 13, when I get access again. Thanks for being patient!
