Disclaimer: Star Wars is the property of George Lucas and LFL, and is not mine, for which we should all be thankful. This is just one fan’s ideas about how LOTF could end up going.

Author Notes: There are spoilers for Sacrifice (and a lot of other SW books) within, both small and large, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, you should probably stop reading right about now. And I’ll go ahead and warn you that this is my first ever fan-fic so forgive any writing quality issues. Comments are welcome, try to be nice though.

Prologue

It has been just over a month since Cha Niathal and Jacen Solo deposed Cal Omas and taken control of the Galactic Alliance. The Imperial Remnant withdrew from the Galactic Alliance nearly three weeks later, and rumors began soon after that the Moff Council intends to enter into a formal alliance with the mysterious Chiss Ascendancy. Since then few systems have joined the dissenting worlds of the Confederation, for fear that a reinvigorated Empire could arise and attack either a weakened GA or the Confederation. Yet many planetary leaders have continued to express doubts about the new GA leadership. In an attempt to both placate the loyal leaders and discover potentially traitorous leaders, Solo has organized a secret meeting on home world of the loyal Wookiees. However, the Confederation military has learned of this conference, and has made plans to disrupt this meeting.

Even as these new political and military battles loom, a far more ancient feud is being renewed. Jacen Solo has become Darth Caedus, the newest Sith Lord, and has decided the existence of the Jedi Order conflicts with his plans for the galaxy. But for now he must work with them and use them for his own ends. Meanwhile the Jedi have their own quests, to find the identity of the killer of one of the own, Mara Jade Skywalker, and to apprehend the Dark Jedi Alema Rar. Meanwhile Han and Leia Solo remain outlaws, pursued by seemingly every faction in the galaxy besides the Jedi.

But this is a time when heroes become villains, family becomes enemies, and things once thought dead return to life. Many changes await a galaxy being torn apart by deception and desires, some planned far in advance and some completely unforeseen.

Chapter 1: Jedi Choices

Jedi Academy Complex, Ossus

It said a lot about the state of the galaxy that Luke felt the Jedi Council should meet in their chambers on Ossus instead of Coruscant. Not only had none of the other council members disagreed with his decision, but Corran and Kyp had heartily agreed with it. The fact that Corran and Kyp were agreeing about anything of importance was itself as shocking to some on the Council as any developments in the larger galaxy. Luke was almost thankful that they still disagreed whenever possible, it was one of the few things that still were the same as they used to be. They were currently debating rather vigorously over Jacen’s request that the Jedi help with security for a secret diplomatic meeting. Luke had presented Jacen’s request, then sat back and let the other Master’s discuss it, but he could feel that the debate was calming back down, and a decision was coming soon, so Luke refocused on the conversation, where Corran was making his final plea.

“Kyp, even you must admit that having the Alliance stable again and this war not lasting any longer than necessary is good for the galaxy, and that needless war is never the Will of the Force. I don’t like Jacen’s policies any more than the rest of you… I am Corellian in case anyone’s forgotten. But for once he’s at least trying to solve his problems with a civilized discussion instead of just arresting or eliminating those who disagree. And he’s doing so in secret for the safety of the leaders that will be attending, many of whom have advocated a moderate, diplomatic approach and it’s their safety he’s asking us to help with. Even if we won’t do it for Jacen or the GA in general, what about Tenal Ka, Triebakk, and those like them?”

Kyp finally conceded defeat. “Alright, I won’t say we shouldn’t allow some Jedi to help out, but I will say we should make this an entirely voluntary mission. Don’t assign any Jedi to go that don’t want to. Based on the history books I’ve read, Jedi taking orders from the government in times like these doesn’t work well for the Jedi, either individually or as an Order.”

“Alright, that’s settled. We’ll send out an encoded message to all Knights and Masters that are available about the Co-Chief of State’s request.” Luke looked around for any signs of dissent, and saw that the Council agreed with his decision. “Corran, I assume you’ll want to go given your arguments for accepting this request, so I’ll leave this mission in your hands. Now if you’ll all excuse me, I’m going to go eat dinner with my son.”

Luke stood up from his seat and headed out from the Council Chambers as his fellow Masters began to stand up and converse among themselves. Luke was in a hurry to get to his apartment, where Ben was cooking dinner. He and his son were closer then they had been in years; but it had taken the death of Luke’s greatest love and Ben’s mother to finally bridge the gap that had formed between them. And to make matters worse, they still hadn’t figured out who killed her, much less brought that person to justice. Luke had killed Lumiya out of revenge, but then found out she wasn’t guilty of this particular crime; Jaina suspected Alema was involved, as she was known to use poison darts, while Leia had pointed out that Lumiya almost certainly had trained a new apprentice at some point, and that the ascension of a new Sith to take her place would allow Lumiya to let herself be killed. But Luke put these thoughts out of his mind; his Sith hunt could wait until after dinner.

“Hey Dad,” Ben called as Luke walked through the door and entered the kitchen, “I think I’ve burnt the chops, are they supposed to turn this color?”

“That depends on who’s doing the cooking. Mine generally end up around that color, so I guess yours can as well. Just put some more sauce on it and it’ll be fine.” Luke set the table and served himself and Ben, and they sat down to a proper meal together.

“So are we going to help Jacen on Kashyyyk? I really want a chance to talk to him; he’s been so busy lately. I think he really needs us right now Dad, and as much as we may not like his recent actions abandoning him aren’t going to accomplish anything.”

Luke debated whether to allow Ben to go. On the one hand his logic was sound; it seemed to Luke that Jacen’s problem was putting “peace” above and individual life and his family, and if that was true then having his family abandon him would just make things worse. But Luke didn’t trust Jacen farther then he could throw him without the Force. Yet he knew this Kashyyyk mission wouldn’t be too dangerous with as many Jedi as Corran wanted to take, especially if Luke himself went as well, and Ben would be useful and familiar link between the Jedi and the Guard units that Jacen would undoubtedly bring with him. So Luke decided to let his son go, though of course he would come as well.

“Yes, I’ve authorized a voluntary Jedi mission. If you really feel you should go I’ll tell Master Horn that we will both be coming.”

“I do, and I’m glad you’ll be coming Dad. When do we leave?”

later that night

“It appears Master Skywalker has authorized a Jedi team for the GA’s secret meeting” Zekk noted as he looked at his terminal, scouring for any news of Alema or other Dark Jedi. “do you all want to go? I have a feeling that Alema or some disciple of Lumiya might show up to stir up some trouble… plus it’d be nice to go do something worthwhile for a change instead of sitting around here on Ossus reading security reports, or even worse, going all the way out the Tatooine on a wild bantha chase like we did last week.”

“And here I was hoping to just sneak off and leave you two here wondering where I’d gone off to again.” Jaina replied with the signature Solo grin. “But yes, I think we’ll be need at this meeting, even though personally I would rather not, considering who its organizer is.” Jaina was still furious at her twin for not even showing up to her aunt’s funeral a month before, giving some excuse about a political emergency. The upside had been her parents had been able to show up and stay for nearly a day without fear of their own son trying to arrest them.

“For a group that advocates minimal attachment you Jedi sure do have a lot of family issues. And for your information, Zekk here knew you were on Hapes the whole time; sometimes that unnatural bond you two share comes in handy.”

Jaina couldn’t help but admit that Jag had a point about her family. Thankfully her mission partners were finally getting along even if her family wasn’t, though that also meant that they were ganging up on her at times, like that incident about her shirt while chasing after Alema (thankfully she had been wearing an undershirt that day). Jaina still wasn’t sure why Jag had become so much nicer to Zekk and her in the last few weeks; Zekk had shared suspicions that he had found a girlfriend, but Jaina figured that was just wishful thinking on his part, as despite his claims on Terephon it was obvious that Zekk did not like the idea of Jag getting too close to her. But Jaina was supposed to be the “Sword of the Jedi” and definitely did not have time for romance or jealous friends with both Alema and Mara’s killer still on the loose; she did however have time to help maintain galactic peace, so she would do her part to keep the politicians safe, and apparently Zekk and Jag were coming too.

“Alright, so we all agree, we’re heading to Kashyyyk. Though I will go ahead and warn Master Horn in my message that if we get word of Alema elsewhere, our prior mission takes priority unless there’s an actual attack underway.”

I'm glad to see you kept your promise saber_death! And you stayed true to the characters, with the debates of the Jedi Council, the sombre and deep feelings between Luke and Ben, and the newfound humour between Jaina, Zekk and Jag.

And Jag acting nice towards Jaina and Zekk? That's quite a pleasant addition. I wonder what caused the change in attitude thinking .

Oh well, I have faith that you will deliver. wink

Keep it up, my friend!

as for when Tahiri, Tenal Ka, and Allana to are going to show up, just keep reading:

Chapter 2: Uninvited Guests

The forest world of Kashyyyk

Darth Caedus stood in the darkness looking out over the forest, peering into his future and feeling the subtle currents of aggression from the nocturnal predators in the undergrowth, and the fear of their prey. The new Sith Lord was quite pleased with the progression of his new plan; he knew the Force was with him, and all was going as he had foreseen. The various leaders of the Alliance would all be gathering here over the next day, and the actual meetings would begin the day after. Caedus was certain that no matter what happened Jacen Solo would once again be seen as a great leader and hero.

Suddenly Caedus felt a familiar presence appear above the planet. Actually, there were two familiar presences; so much for everything going as planned. It took all of Caedus’ self control to keep his various emotions from leaking into the Force, as the Jedi that were still awake would undoubtedly feel them. He saw the craft entering the atmosphere and made his way down to the landing bay to greet his newly arrived guests.

Because the shuttle that was landing belonged to one of the most important leaders in the Alliance, both militarily and politically, none of the elite Alliance soldiers guarding the landing bay thought twice about their commander arriving to greet her personally. What they didn’t know was his presence had almost nothing to do with the leader having one of the largest independent fleets in the galaxy or the fact that she was a young and popular politician. As the shuttle settled down and six of the young Queen’s guards exited the craft, she walked down the ramp to be welcomed by her old friend.

Jacen knew he had to show proper decorum in this public meeting, so he bowed and greeted his lover in a far more formal way then he’d have liked. “Greetings your Majesty, and welcome to Kashyyyk. I was not expecting you till tomorrow, but I am glad you were able to come to this conference in spite of the recent unrest in your own system.”

“We feel that the stability of Hapes is directly related to the stability of the greater galaxy. It is the Confederation that is urging the nobles to threaten the throne. Furthermore, they have made further attempts on our family, which forced us to come earlier than expected.”

Implicit within her statements was her reason for bringing her daughter, Jacen’s daughter, along with her. The nobles had continued trying to attack her, and as far as Tenal Ka knew Kashyyyk would be safer, especially with Jacen there to protect Allana. While this conference would not be as safe as Tenal Ka thought it would be, Caedus would do everything in his considerable power to protect the only family he had left.

“Indeed. Your Majesty, if you’ll follow me, I will personally take you to your suite for the week” Jacen then mentally asked her a more private question through their Force bond. “What about Allana?”

Tenal Ka glanced for a second at the Guard troopers stationed in the landing bay, and replied just as silently. “Your guards know to keep quiet, right? I’ve told her not to say anything or react towards you in any way. Just tell your men not to tell anyone about her and we should be fine.”

General Solo nodded and went to remind his soldiers that the privacy of the planetary leaders was just as important as their safety. Meanwhile the Queen Mother went to went to retrieve her heir and instruct the few servants she had brought on which items needed to be brought to the suit.

As the two most beautiful people in the galaxy joined him on the landing bay, Jacen led his secret family to the apartments they would reside in for the next week. This was only the second time Allana had left the Hapes cluster, and Jacen could tell his daughter was impressed by the Wookiees’ island city. He couldn’t help but wish he could take her to all the planets he had seen over the course of his life; but there would be time for that once Caedus’s rule over the galaxy was secure.

three days later

Jaina had finally finished her middle of the night patrol with Tahiri. It was the first time the two friends had had alone in weeks, and as annoying as walking laps around a conference center could be, it was great to catch up with the woman that had over the years become a sister in all but blood and name. And, as they both knew though neither would ever say out loud, if a certain mission in the Vong war ended differently it would have just been blood that kept them from being sisters.

They had discussed seemingly everything from the abilities of the new young Jedi that had come on this mission to the recent mechanical difficulties that had plagued Tahiri’s Stealth-X. But the one of the few topics they had avoided, by unspoken agreement, was the rift that had grown between Jacen and the rest of the Solo family. Tahiri and Jaina had argued about that very issue right after Mara’s funeral; Tahiri thought Jaina should go have a long talk with her twin, while all Jaina wanted to do was either avoid him or beat him over the head with her hydrospanner. Since beating the co-Chief of State of the Galactic Alliance with a blunt object was still a crime, Jaina had chosen the avoiding method.

Though avoiding such a huge topic had made the conversation somewhat tense at times, it had still been a good night. After returning to the Jedi meeting area both of them had meditated for awhile, but now Jaina needed something to do since Tahiri had gone to bed. She considered waking Zekk up a full four hours earlier than he needed to be up to spar, but decided not to wake her best friend up at such an early hour; she knew he’d only return the favor by waking her up as soon as his shift was over.

Suddenly she felt a quiet and subtle call in the Force from her uncle. “Jaina… supplies hangar bay.” Jaina knew Master Skywalker was on patrol, he had of course volunteered for the early morning shift alongside young Thann Mithric. Obviously something strange was going on for him to contact only her.

As Jaina neared the hangar bay she realized why her Uncle had called her and only her; she felt her parents’ presence in the Force and heard the Millennium Falcon was in the middle of its shut down cycle. Jaina simultaneously was happy to see her parents again and wondering how many deathsticks her parents had taken to make them thinking showing up in the middle of a political conference hosted by Jacen would be a good idea. It was a small miracle that Jacen hadn’t caught onto them already, and Jaina quickly put up her mental shields in case Jacen picked up on her own emotions. Their twin bond no longer was as open as it had been when they were growing up, but at this range Jacen could sense her feelings almost instinctively.

As her parents walked down the ramp and greeted Luke, she blurted out “Mom, Dad, just what do you think you’re doing here? If Jacen so much as casually scans this bay with the Force, he’ll know you’re here.”

“It’s nice to see you too Jaina,” her mother replied with a gentle smile. “Jacen’s presence here is precisely why we’ve come.”

“Yeah, we’ve decided not to run anymore. The Confederation doesn’t like us anymore than the Alliance after what we pulled before the battle at Duro, so there isn’t hardly anywhere that’s safe anymore without putting other people in danger. We figure Jacen is at least as likely to be forgiving as K’roylan or Willems, and if not you and Luke will at least be around to knock some sense into him, literally if need be.”

Jaina realized her parents had a good point. Life on the run wasn’t nearly as glamorous as the holovids made it out to be, and if Jacen still cared about his family at all he’d be lenient. For that matter, if he cared about popular support he’d have to handle this delicately. The biggest complaint those still loyal to the Alliance had with Jacen was his treatment of his own parents, the details of which had been leaked to the press a couple of weeks earlier, coincidently the same day that Lando had given an interview about his newest mining venture. In almost every other way he had become immensely popular throughout the Alliance, though of course one could argue, as Jaina often did, that most of those that did not like him or his policies had already defected, so of course he would be popular with those still part of the Alliance.

“Alright, so what’s the plan? I assume your not planning on just walking up the Jacen in the middle of the night and ask for directions to the nearest brig?”

“Of course not,” Han replied to his daughter with his trademark grin. “We’re going to wait till morning and catch him during breakfast. Everyone’s in a better mood while eating breakfast, especially if it’s been cooked by Wookiees. But in the mean time, we want to spend some time with out favorite daughter.”

“And my favorite brother” Leia added. She hadn’t spent nearly enough time with her brother since Mara had died, having had to leave the funeral after less than a day for fear of Jacen coming after his own parents.

“Well, I have to finish my patrol before I can relax, even with you two. My shift ends in just about two hours, how about you three stay here on the Falcon till then, I’ll head back here when I’m done.” Luke waved as he headed back onto patrol, and Jaina joined her parents on the ship she called home more so than any planet.

Excellent. Thank you so very much saber_death. By the way, I don't believe I have ever been on anyone's PM list before. Call me a n00b if you must, but what exactly does it mean?

Nevertheless, I'm glad to be chosen. And I'm glad that you kept your promise and updated. Admittedly, the chapters are not quite as long as I'd want, but that doesn't matter at all. You're doing a great job!

By the way, there was a battle at Duro? I wonder what happened there thinking . Because last time I checked, isn't Duro rather close to Corellia? And wasn't Thracken planning to attack it? I don't suppose you will elaborate further on this, will you?

I wish you were writing profic. But then, I wish I was too.

Another awesome post... applause

I like what you've done with Caedus and what he's setting up.

But I too was wondering about Duro, or is it a original battle that you came up with to progress the story a bit? I do that sort of thing all the time.

Well written and I can't wait for the next part. applause

thanks for the compliments. some of the upcoming chapters are going to be at least a little longer.

thanks a lot. i'm glad you like it, especially Caedus.

as for what happened at Duro: it's a battle i came up with that happened during the weeks in between Sacrifice and the start of this fic. much like Han's mention of Lando's actions at Taanab in ROTJ or "That business on Cato Neimoidia" in ROTS. and yes, it'll be talked about more later in the story.

Thanks for clearing up the Battle of Duro bit, I was having questions about that as well. What I really loved was when you switched between the Sith's names, calling him Darth Caedus when he's plotting and General Solo when he's with Tenel Ka and Allana.

Keep up the good work.

no problem. and seeing as how everyone is so interested in this battle, i may even throw in a full-blown flashback in the near future.

thanks, writing him is interesting, since his Sith-ness is a total secret (for now). it's not even like Palpatine where some of his minions knew him as Sidious and called him that; he's really always Jacen unless he's alone.
