Just found this story and I am desperate to find out what happens. Little Jacen is so cute and I love the way you have written Han tougher and more responsible than he normally is.
Please update soon batting

Before I post these comments, I wanted to say thanks to my loyal readers who have stuck around so long. I don't have a ton of stuff done, but a few chapters have been written, and I'll post them over the next few weeks. Thank you for all your kind comments when my computer crashed. And thank you to my wonderful beta, Gabri_Jade, who always does such a wonderful and thorough job.

Gabri_Jade: Ah, Vader and Mara. Always lots of potential there. And seriously, Jieh, with everything else Mara is dealing with, you just had to throw in the holocams, didn't you? So, where do we go from here? I'm intrigued. We must chat.

- I'm always happy to chat. Although you know where this story goes before anyone else does tongue

Jedi_BMK: I get this odd feeling that this slicer could be someone familiar. Though I have been known to be wrong. From time to time.

- Well, in my personal canon, this slicer would be Kyle T'Bale, a character of mine from my previous trilogy, but just because it's a convenient name for me to use. happy

Jedi-2B: Vader as a matchmaker? laugh

PonyTricks: so Vader has seen the Light, now that it's too late. Too bad he didn't say these things to his son, before Luke turned into a Sith.

- Such is life. Or at least, such is life in one of my stories wink

Blue-Milkshake: Mara's always snarky. That's why I love her wink

Jedimaster_JainaSolo: Thanks for reading. Glad you liked that Mara/Vader bit.

Jaina_and_Jag: Daddy Vader is always interesting to me, although after IHarthDarth, I can never see him as a hulking menace anymore.

Irish_Jedi_Jade: But luke needs another snuggle session with mara...

- I don't know if I'd call what he does with Mara as snuggle sessions shock

dm1: Next back to Han, Leia and Jacen, whenever you can get to it...

- Sorry, just the way the story turned out, the next post is actually L/M...but then it's H/L after that.

Golden_Jedi: Sadly, it is somewhat too late for DarthDaddy to be trying to be a father...but at least he gave it a shot.

jade51999: also i wonder what's on the disc..is Luke secretly spying for the rebellion?
- Sadly, it's nothing as nice as that. sad

JediNat: Thanks for reading!

I_Heart_Han_Solo: Thanks for the bump happy

RavynNightstorm: Thank you for reading! I'm so flattered that you like it so far happy

recklessabandon: Thanks for reading. It's great to see you again!

YmaSolo: Welcome to the story and thanks for reading.

(Thanks for reading In Name Only, too, although my muse is being most uncooperative about that one)

maramijade: Wow, it's great to see you again! In answer to your question, Leia and Jacen were only on Murion for a few weeks.

AvenKiel: * waves * Great to see you. Thanks for reading (and for waiting!)

LASOS: Welcome to the story and thanks for reading.

The-Solo-Smirk: Welcome to the story. I'm flattered you like my portrayals of Luke and Han happy

TizTiz: Welcome to the story and thanks for reading. I'm flattered you like Jacen happy

JediFarfy: Welcome to the story!

Sorry to the H/Lers, but the next postie is L/M. It just has to do with how this story has to be paced out...

And thank you so much to my kind readers who nominated this story! You're simply the best! hugs

Chapter Twenty-Seven

It had taken three days to decode the disc, but finally, Mara had a trilobyte of data; preliminary analysis of the data revealed that the Empire had plans to relocate, decimate or infilitrate the population of several star systems located in key positions around the galaxy. They would then build up key military bases in those areas that could well threaten some of the largest and most affluent systems in the Core, the Hydian Way, and the Corporate Sector, even in the Corellian Trade Spine. It seemed that Skywalker was coordinating these plans; some of the data streams showed half-completed files and others showed changed drafts of proposed data.

After initial confirmation and analysis tests showed the data to be authentic, Mara sent the data stream to a predesignated receiver site monitored by Shoru Klee who would retrieve and analyze the data that Mara sent. The information on this disc was, by far, the largest and most high-level that she had been able to access since her return to Coruscant, and Mara felt a rare surge of satisfaction when she completed the transaction.

The slicer, a pale, reedy man named Kyle T’Bale, handed Mara the original disc, and she stowed it into her compact, ready to return the disc to Skywalker’s suite.

Her comm. unit beeped as Mara entered the corridor outside the slicer’s lab, and Mara frowned, hitting the comm. “What is it?”

“Get to my suite. Now.”

Mara felt a sudden chill. Skywalker had said he’d be away for a week. How was it possible that he was back already? Moreover, the tone of his voice didn’t bode well for his state of mind. She had never heard such an unhinged curtness in his voice.

While she spent most of her time in Skywalker's suite, she still retained her own rooms; it was the work of a moment to secret the disk in a double hidden panel in one of the sidewalls

Less than five minutes later, she had arrived at Skywalker’s suite. Her normal habit had been to enter as soon as she arrived. She had the entry code, and Skywalker had told her not to bother chiming. But this time, she froze at the door, an unaccustomed fear gripping her. It took several heartbeats before Mara realized that she was not afraid for herself; rather, she was afraid for Skywalker. Even separated from him by the door, Mara could feel a surge of pain, anger, fear—empty darkness that seemed to drag her soul down into a place she did not want to go.

Even as she wrestled with her thoughts, the door slid open. Skywalker loomed before her, seeming larger than life.

“What are you waiting for?” he hissed. “A royal invitation? Get inside! Where were you?”

“What in the name of—“ Mara’s startled words were cut short as he grasped her arm and yanked her inside the suite. His eyes, normally blue, sometimes steel gray, were now almost red, and Mara recoiled from the glowing crimson she saw in his irises. “No,” she breathed, feeling that her limbs were turning to water.

The kiss Skywalker gave her was brief, harsh, impersonal, and likely the most unnerving contact she’d ever had with another sentient being. Through his kiss, louder than if he had shouted it, with more clarity than a precision-beam holorecording, Mara was able to ‘see’ exactly what Skywalker had been doing in the days that he had been away from her. It was as though he had taken her into his arms as a way to cleanse himself, an anodyne to his pain and anger, as though she was some sort of purification conduit for his soul. But even the physical contact was not nearly as troubling nor as painful as knowing the savagery he had committed, of reliving and feeling through him the anguish and the terror and the malignity that he had sown on his mission.

“Stop!” Mara burst out, as she broke out of his embrace.

For a moment she thought that Skywalker was going to strike her. The red still glowed in those eyes, and his breath came in short, sharp stabs. “Who are you?” he asked harshly.

“What?” Mara wondered if he’d lost his mind. “You know who I am. Mara J—“

“That’s not what I meant and you know it,” he said. He was making a visible effort to control his anger, and spoke slowly, deliberately.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You’re more than just a bit of Court fluff. Who do you really work for?”

“In the end, don’t we all work for the same master?” Mara asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Don’t play games with me! I’ve seen you—and him. Palpatine!” Skywalker spat the word. “He’s sent you to spy on me, hasn’t he?”

Mara said nothing for several moments. When she spoke, there was a sudden bitterness in her voice that she hadn’t known she had been feeling. “He sent me to you for your enjoyment. He wanted you to have a toy to play with.”

“You’re a liar!” Skywalker hurled the accusation at her, the rage leaping into his eyes again. “Tell me the truth!”

“What is truth?” Mara challenged. “How would you even know what the truth was?”

“How dare—“

“Why the sudden questions? What’s behind all this?”

Anger was still flickering in his eyes, but he tried to control himself again. Using the Force, he picked up a few objects from the end table, all heavy jadeite weights and slowly rotated them through the air, as he paced back and forth, as though the exercise was calming to his nerves. “No one tells me the truth around here. It’s only what they think I want to hear.” And with that last, he punctuated his anger by sending one of the jadeite weights hurtling into the wall on the other side of the room where it smashed with a splatter of jadeite and plaster fragments.

Underneath the anger, Mara thought she heard a faint thread of despair. What was it that had set him off? Had the horrific things he’d done on his mission triggered something? But, no, it was something else.

But what in the galaxy could affect him like this?

And then it came to her. “Vader,” she murmured.

Abruptly, the pacing stopped. Skywalker rounded on her so quickly that Mara had to summon every ounce of will power to face him without flinching.

“What did you say?” he demanded.

“Is it Vader?” Mara asked, her brow furrowed.

“How—what makes you think—how—?” The anger was growing again. Mara could almost see it rising like a tide.

“He summoned me. We—I—“ Mara hesitated, not sure how to even categorize her relationship with Vader. “I knew him when I was growing up.”

Skywalker said nothing, but turned away from her and paced again. After several minutes, he stopped and stood before the enormous transparisteel windows gazing past the thicket of buildings toward the view of the Manarai Mountains to the west.

“He’s gone into a coma,” Skywalker said at last.

Mara said nothing, but for the first time since she’d known him, she felt a stirring of sympathy for Skywalker. The flat, emotionless way in which he spoke conveyed the depth of his feeling toward his father, surprising her. At the same time, his words reminded her of what Vader had said to him when she had summoned her into his chambers.

“He didn’t want this for you,” she said.

“It’s too late, then isn’t it?” Skywalker snapped, the anger coming back again as he turned back toward her.

“Why do you do those things?” Mara asked, unable to stop herself.
“It’s what I do.”

“It’s not what you do,” Mara said, the words surprising even her. “It’s what you’ve been deceived into thinking you must do. That’s all.”

“What do you know about it?” Skywalker demanded, his voice fierce as he rounded on her again, gripping her arms tightly.

Mara forced herself to meet his eyes boldly. “I know you weren’t always like this. I know they broke you, did what they could to destroy the man you once were. Palpatine did his best to force you into his mold. But there’s still something left that he hasn’t reached.”

“How do you know this? What would a dancing girl, know about the man I once was?”

“I know plenty about you,” Mara said. And it was true that she had done her homework on him. “Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin Skywalker, you were raised on a moisture farm out on Tatooine by Owen and Beru La—“

“Shut up! None of that means anything! You know nothing!”

“You’re right,” Mara said, wrenching her arms out of his grasp. “Perhaps I was the one deceived. I deceived myself into thinking that you were more than a blunt tool for Palpatine to wield. Perhaps you were never capable of being more than that, never more capable of being a coward and a weakling, a sad excuse for a Sith, and the son of his Sith lackey—“

It was as though a storm had broken out, only the suite was hermetically sealed from the outside. All manner of objects began to rise in the air and swirl around them in a sudden, mad maelstrom that threatened to kill them both. Instinctively, Mara flung herself into an alcove in the nearest wall, doing her best to shield herself from the soaring missiles that smashed and splintered against the walls and windows in the midst of the howling Force-made winds. And through the mayhem, Mara thought she could hear Skywalker’s scream of primal rage.

She didn’t know how long the storm raged, with a suddenness that was unnerving, the wind died, dropping the last of the flying fragments to the floor with a cascade of crackling splatters.

The silence that followed was eerie. Mara knew instinctively that Skywalker’s absence had ended the Force storm, but she was still wary as she pulled her arms away from her face. The room before her had been decimated. The larger pieces of furniture lay cracked and splintered, while the smaller pieces and the objets d’art that had adorned the room now lay smashed into unrecognizable dust. Mara looked down at her arms—coated in the same white powder of smashed ceramics and glass and stone that coated the rest of the room—in wonder, amazed that she had been spared.

She stumbled through the clutter of broken objects on the floor, trying her best not to fall or to step on something too sharp, and then reached the door. She hit the controls.

Nothing happened. Mara frowned and hit the controls again.

Still, nothing happened. A flash of frustrated anger made her pound against the door, but she knew nothing would happen. She reached down to use her comm. link, but, she saw that it was broken, destroyed in the Force storm that Skywalker had created.

She looked on the wall next to the door, but saw that the comm. unit there had been ruined as well. Scowling, she made her way across the living room into the bedroom to find the comm. unit there. The bedroom door slid open, and Mara saw to her relief that this room had not been touched by the devastation that had raged through the other room.

She tried the comm. unit, but could not raise a response. She wondered if communications to this room had been cut off.

But even as she considered how to extricate herself from this situation, she suddenly realized that she was exhausted, felt more drained than any training session in the gyms or high intensity mission had ever left her. It seemed as though physical weights had been placed over her eyelids. She stumbled toward the shimmersilk covered bed and collapsed onto it, falling asleep almost instantly. Her last conscious thought was to wonder if this extreme fatigue might have anything to do with the strange sensation that had flared out of her as she had crouched in the alcove doing everything she could to protect herself from Skywalker’s rage, wondered if that sensation had anything to do with that mysterious power called the Force.

Definitely worth the wait!

Vader in a coma and Luke feeling like his world is crashing? -- not what it was made out to be? But I think the only person to bring him out of it would definitely be Mara -- who I guess is now seeing her Force potential too? Awesome update!
