	Chapter Nine: On the Job Mara brought the landspeeder to a halt outside of a private hanger at the Coronet spaceport. After beckoning for Sera to follow her, she strode inside. Sera quickened her pace. When she reached the entrance, she stopped for a minutes to watch her mother walk over to two arguing men. She shook hands with one of them. “Ms. Jade,” the man said, “I’m very pleased to see you. Your . . . associate . . . here seems to be upping prices whenever he feels like it.” “I’m sure Aves isn’t trying to harm our negotiations,” Mara said smoothly. “However, Captain Karrde just increased prices because the recent pirate attacks have made it harder to get our supplies. He feels that compensation is required. “It’s not my fault that –” The man paused, seeming to notice Sera for the first time. “Who’s this?” he demanded brusquely. “My daughter,” Mara replied in a similar tone. “She just got back from camp, and we had planned to spend the day together.” Sera noticed the slight emphasis in her mother’s voice. Mara beckoned her over, and she came willingly. “I’m Shae,” she said, giving the man a sickly sweet tone that she had heard her aunt Leia use on people she thought were rude. “I’m very pleased to meet you. My mother hasn’t had time to introduce me to anyone new since I got back. I had to stay at camp longer because she was late getting home – pirate attacks, you know.” Sera crossed her fingers behind her back, hoping that the man wouldn’t see through her flimsi-thin lie. As much as her uncle Han and cousin Jaina had tried, she still only had a somewhat passable sabaac face. He didn’t seem to be able to tell that she was making things up, so she upped the charade. She leaned against her mother and allowed tears to come to her eyes. “I missed her so much,” she said, trying to hide a laugh. “We don’t get to see each other much.” It struck Sera that she suddenly wasn’t lying at all, but she forced back the lump in her throat. Getting truly upset wouldn’t do any of them any good. The man looked at her for a moment, then turned back to Mara and Aves. “Fine,” he said shortly. “I’ll pay it, but next time I run into Karrde, we’ll be having a talk.” He correct the amount on a credit slip he was holding, shoved it at Aves, and then stalked off. After she was done, Mara and Aves turned to her. “Good job, kid!” Aves said enthusiastically. “You’re welcome to join me any time,” he continued with a grin. He ruffled her hair affectionately, and then said to Mara, “I have to deliver this to Karrde. Thanks for coming down here.” “No problem, Mara replied. She gave Sera a strange look. “Where did you learn to do that?” Sera put up a mental block so that her mother wouldn’t try to probe her with the Force. “Oh, camp,” she said, pretending nonchalance. Inside, her heart was beating rapidly. “So,” she forced out, “we have plans?” Mara continued to watch her carefully, but said, “Of course. What did you have in mind.” Sera’s stomach rumbled. “Lunch?” she asked hopefully. Mara smiled. “Right away.” As they walked out to the speeder, Sera took a deep breath. She didn’t want to ruin her first day with her mother, but she hadn’t forgotten her mission. Besides, who knew if Mara would have to head out tomorrow on a late-notice mission for Karrde? Shae had warned her that things like that happened often. “I have a question,” she ventured hesitantly. “Ask away.” “It’s about the ‘D’ word.” Mara stopped at looked down at her daughter. “The ‘D’ word?” “Dad.” “Oh.” Mara was silent for a moment, and then said, “You know you can ask.” “How did you two meet?” Sera crossed her fingers that her mother would answer. Mara took a deep breath and then blew it out, remembering. “It was about five years after the Empire fell. I’ve told you I was the Emperor’s Hand, remember?” No, she didn’t, but Shae had told her that their mother had been an assassin for Palpatine, so she assumed enough that she was able to nod for Mara to go on. “Well, your father was a very high-ranking officer in the Rebel Alliance. I thought that I had heard the Emperor’s . . . voice, I suppose . . . tell me to kill him. Over and over, that’s what I heard in my head, like it was his last wish. So, I tried to kill him.” “And ended up falling for him?” Sera asked with a grin. Mara grinned back. “He was a naïve farmboy, even after fighting a galactic war. Plus, he wasn’t hard on the eyes. A very alluring combination. We saved each others’ lives a few times, and – yes, I ended up falling for him.” They climbed in the speeder, and Sera scooted over to snuggle against her mother. Mara put an arm around her and kissed the top of her head. “Anything else you want to know?” Sera shook her head; the rest of it was Shae’s job. “No,” she said, but then had an idea. “Just . . . what was his name?” “Luke,” Mara said softly. 	Haha! I loved Mara using Sera as a bargaining chip of sorts. It's all in the family. And great way to bring "Sera" asking about her dad.
