	Chapter 13: Emergency Shae found a blank flimsi in Sera's desk drawer, thanking the Force that she was able to find one for once. In her own room on Corellia, she probably wouldn't have found one so fast, and since she couldn’t get Sera a message any other way, she desperately needed one. She quickly drew a sketch on it. Then, peeking out of her bedroom, she saw Tionne bringing in a basket of laundry. She quickly motioned for Tionne to come to her room. "What is it sweetie?" Tionne asked, her voice just above a whisper. "Do we have a holotransmitter? I need to send this." She held up a flimsi for the Jedi Master to see. “Yes, of course.” She gestured to Shae. “Follow me.” ~~~ Sera smiled across the kitchen table at her mother, who smiled back. They were eating at Mara’s place with Karrde and Kam. The two men had just finished a friendly debate about the price of the best Corellian Whiskey, and all three adults were drinking a glass with their nerfsteak. The food was good, Sera decided, as good as her uncle Han made. “Can I have a sip?” she asked. Aunt Leia never let her try it when her uncle drank, and she was pretty sure that there wasn’t any kind of alcohol to be found on Yavin IV. Mara looked surprised. “Sure, sweetie, but I don’t think you’ll like it.” Sera was curious nonetheless, so she took the glass the her mother handed her. Before she could take a sip, she was distracted by a beeping. “I’ll get it,” said Kam. “Sounds like the holotransmitter.” Karrde and Mara looked after him. “Could be important,” Karrde said. Mara shook her head. “I don’t use it that much anymore,” she replied. “It’s probably a wrong number.” Sera shrugged off their conversation and took a sip of the whiskey, rolling it around in her mouth before swallowing. “Not that bad,” she said, handing it back to her mother. Mara was smiling. Kam came back and held up the piece of transmitted flimsi. “What in all the hells is this?” he asked. Sera turned around, and almost choked on the drink. It was a crude, quick drawing, but it was very obviously an astromech droid. There was a cartoon speech bubble next to the droid saying “HELP!” Sera felt a little woozy. It could be any astromech in the galaxy . . . but it wasn’t. It was Artoo-Detoo, and the message was from Shae. “That’s strange,” Mara said, “but it must be a wrong number.” She looked at her daughter. “Shae, are you all right?” she asked, concerned. Sera shook her head. “I’m just a little dizzy from the drink.” She set the glass on the table. “Mind if I go out for some fresh air?” “Go ahead,” her mother replied, still looking a little worried. Sera bolted out of the room. *** After she left the apartment, Sera ran down the street to where she knew a holocomm booth was. She fingered her pocket; she still had the pre-paid emergency card that her father had given her before she’d left for camp. Whatever Shae was trying to get her attention about, it had to be important. She shut herself in the booth and, with shaking fingers, punched in the number for the Academy on Yavin IV and the extension for the Skywalker quarters, crossing her fingers that her father wouldn’t answer. Luckily, Shae picked up. “Sera?” she whispered. “Yeah. What was that message about?” Sera asked, concerned. She knew that nothing really serious had happened, or Shae wouldn’t have hesitated to blow her sister’s cover, but she was nervous. Shae cut to the chase. “Dad’s getting married,” she said simply. Sera felt her jaw drop. “Married? No way.” “Oh, way. She’s a complete Sith.” Sera leaned back against the booth’s walls for support. “We have to stop it,” she said decisively. “We need to get Mom and Dad to meet again,” Shae replied decisively. “The wedding is being held on Coruscant. We’re heading there next week and staying at that big hotel on the Imperial Plaza. You and Mom need to meet us there.” Sera nodded, then realized that her sister couldn’t see her. “We’ll be there,” she promised before ending the connection. She stepped out of the booth and couldn’t avoid bumping into the man waiting there. “Oops, sorry,” she said, before looking at his face. When she did, she gulped. It was Karrde. “I think we need to talk,” he said, gently but firmly, as he led her down the street to a bench. *** The next morning, Mara was lying in bed, reading the holonews. Sera knocked hesitantly on the door. The former assassin looked up and smiled at her daughter. “Come in, sweetie,” she said, patting the bed. Sera snuggled against her. “I’ve got the whole day free today,” Mara said. “What do you say after breakfast the two of us go get lost on Treasure Row?” “I can’t,” Sera said. “I’m going on a trip.” To avoid her mother’s curious gaze, she pulled the covers over her head. “Going on a trip? Where are you going, Shae?” Mara asked, playing along with a smile on her face. “That’s exactly it – I’m going to see Shae.” Mara grinned; her daughter was seldom this silly. “Where is Shae?” “On Yavin IV, with her father, Luke Skywalker.” Mara froze. The words reverberated around her head. On Yavin IV, with her father, Luke Skywalker. Mara had never told Shae what her father’s name was, much less where he was. There was no way that her daughter could know. Of course, she had another daughter . . . no, that was impossible. Or was it? “If you’re not Shae,” she said slowly, “then you’re . . .” The redhead that she thought was Shae pulled the covers down slowly. “Sera.” Mara put her hand to her mouth and felt tears spring to her eyes. “Sera,” she whispered. She wrapped her arms around the girl and squeezed her tightly. Sera squeezed back. “You’re not mad?” she asked hesitantly. Mara smoothed Sera’s hair. “Oh, darling, of course not. I love you; I have always loved you. Oh, Sera.” *** “I have no idea what I’m doing.” Kam raised his eyes at a very disheveled-looking Mara. “What are you doing? Because you’re supposed to be packing.” Mara glared at him. “I haven’t seen the man in – what, eleven years? I swore I’d never see him again. And now here I am, flying halfway across the galaxy to meet him. And I’m a mess.” “I can see,” Kam said, eyeing her. Sera popped in the room. “I’m all packed,” she said cheerfully. “How are you doing, Mom?” “Ah, me too, sweetie.” Sera eyed her mother’s duffle. “You haven’t even started.” Mara looked at it. “Oh, right. Well, you go on, and I’ll be ready soon. You talked to your dad?” “Of course.” Sera forced a smile. “He says he can’t wait to see us.” “Oh. Good,” Mara said, and retreated back into her closet. Kam turned to Sera. “Liar, liar, pants on fire,” he whispered. Sera put her finger over her lips. “Shh!” she admonished, then left as quickly as she had come. Mar came out of the closet empty-handed and met Kam’s gaze. “I need a favor.” “Yes?” “Well . . . you know I see you as more than a partner, Kam; you’re my friend.” “And you need moral support so you want me to come along?” he asked wryly. “Yes, please.” “Of course, Mara,” he replied. 	So now one parent knows the truth. Though maybe not the whole truth. It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected. It was Luke. ~~And the rest is history~~

	Oh this was sooo good! I loved the cartoon of Artoo with the "HELP!" and then the run-in with Grandpa Karrde...! Mara packing and Kam's advice was brilliant. The characters are so solid in this.
