I loved the Mara/Luke mush!
As Jade_Eyes so eloquently put it: SQUEE! grin

The Chief of State strode purposely across the large expanse of pale carpet and paused at the edge of the living area, halfway between the Jedi and the front door. “Then I’ll just have to change the rules so I can.”

Snake! Can he do that?! He can't just go ahead and change the rules as he sees fit, can he?
... Politicians! Snakes! Conniving little bastard.

Obviously Kyp would go out and help find the other Jedi. Or at least join in their fight. What else would there have been for him to do anyway? The Council wouldn't be an option anymore so he'd be stuck doing nothing. And Kyp strikes me as a man needing something to do.

Great post, as usual. wink

Caught up at last. happy Great story idea with the rescue mission, and it's good to see Kyp having a major role. It's true that Luke and Kyp have been at loggerheads more often than not. Ah, men! wink

Mara herself had in no way gotten over the deaths of her two nephews and niece, either; the difference between her and her husband was that she was willing to broach the subject in an attempt to find some closure, and he was not. She knew things would be much easier for both of them if they could just learn to deal with their grief together, but with the way Luke had been acting lately, that didn’t seem likely.
I liked that bit - nice character analysis of both Mara and Luke andthe way they balance each other.

Poor Luke - always having to walk the tightrope isn't he? Such is the role of the leader sadly.

It will be interesting to see how the rescue mission deals with their challenges. happy

I'm so sorry I haven't replied to this before now sad Things have been really crazy lately.

Aren’t they the best, though? Mine are dark purple, matt. I wuvsies them!

I've had a few pairs over the years. Mine are just brown tongue

I think that might be it. I’d always half expect him (in the NJO) to jump out and say, “Surprise! I’m arresting you!”

laugh

Exactly!

You’ll see one of them around # 10 – but I’m not saying which one.

Damn thinking

[/obi_wan] You’re insight serves you well.

dancing

Back in the safety of his bedchamber, Luke Skywalker was free to let out his first contented sigh of the day. His wife, Mara, had magic hands, and they’d been working wonders on his taut shoulders for the last half hour. Though he was nowhere near as relaxed as he’d like to be just yet, he was certainly in a lot better shape now then he’d been back in the Council chambers.

A massage from Mara Jade... Nice wink

The redheaded Jedi help up her hands in mock-defence. “I never said I agreed with any of the criticism of today, I only meant that you should have anticipated something like this happening when you appointed Kyp. Don’t get me wrong; I like Durron. I’m not his biggest fan, but he has done some good in recent times, however, you and I both know what he’s like.”

Can't really argue with that. Kyp says what's on his mind, no matter what. He's prone to outbursts tongue

“You’re not exactly gentle when you tell the truth,” he pointed out matter-of-factly.
“Newsflash! Neither is Kyp, or did you need another demonstration at the next council meeting?”

Exactly what I was thinking laugh

Mara laughed this time and gave her husband a quick peck on the forehead. She leaned in closer still and placed her hands firmly on the tops of his shoulder, gazing up at him with a mischievous twinkle in her emerald eyes. “Well, now that the politics are out of the way, there’s the matter of your relaxation to discuss.” His wife gave a brief experimental rub on either side of his neck and tutted. “You’re still so tense, and I’ve been cooped up here all day…”
Luke tilted his head to one side in order to give her hands more room to move, stealing a kiss on his way past her luscious lips and humming in reply. “Mmm… what did you have in mind?”

thinking

He laughed for the second time in as many minutes and ran a suggestive hand down the length of his wife’s robed arms. “Ok, what about a sparring session? It’s been a while since you’ve played with me and my sword.”

laugh

You're bad, Ant shame_on_you

As he pulled his beautiful wife down on the soft duvet with him, Luke Skywalker decided that right now was the perfect time to begin to make things up to her. By the enthusiastic sound that rumbled between their fused lips, Mara didn’t object to that one bit.

So what is it they were going to do? tongue

He’d been knocking for maybe a minute when the lock clicked in the electronic mechanism in front of him, and the wide mahogany door of the apartment swung open to reveal a wet-haired Mara Jade Skywalker, dressed only in a fluffy white bathrobe. Small beads of water still clung to her exposed calves, and for a moment Cal Omas wondered exactly what he’d interrupted.

LOL!

A nice getup for Mara too silly

Now that he was alone, the politician let his gaze sweep over his surroundings; taking in the freshly brewed pot of caf resting on the bench directly across from where he was sitting, the thick camel and azure curtains hanging, closed, from a set of mock-gold rings, and the large holo-screen that was the focal point of the room. The latter was currently displaying yet another of the ‘Solo Children Tribute’ shows that had been running non-stop since their tragic deaths.

sad

That's so sad to picture.

Love the descriptions of the Skywalker's apartment. Very vivid.

Curious, the Chief of State rose from his chair and made his way over to the designer sideboard hosting the holo-pics. He gave a wary glance over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching him, and then carefully picked up the upside-down frame with his fingertips.

Silly Omas. Thinking he could do something in a Jedi's home without them sensing it wink

“If you’re quite done riffling through my personal affects…” Luke commented mildly.

Busted.

Cal took the proffered mug and raised it to his own lips in silent appreciation, taking an experimental drink to gauge the flavour. It was bitter, but with a hint of sweetness not unlike hot chocolate. He decided rather quickly that he could get used to this.

Luke may have added some hot chocolate whistling

Omas downed half his cup in one scorching mouthful, using the burning sensation to prevent him from losing his nerve. “I came to apologise… for my behaviour earlier today. I was out of line, and I’m sorry.”

Awesome applause Glad to see the mostly reasonable Omas from DW here and not the crazy, bitter Cal Omas from DN.

Dif Scaur’s response had been expected: he wanted to have nothing to do with the unstable Jedi, and believed that neither should the government. Look at all the trouble they gave Fey’ela, he’d protested.

I'm sure Scaur has a better plan on how to neutralize the Yuuzhan Vong threat anyway. Perhaps some sort of biological weapon wink

“I’m afraid the other members were unwavering in their decision regarding Kyp Durron.”
The Jedi’s blue eyes narrowed. “They want him off the Council,” the aging Master stated flatly.
“Effective immediately.”

I was afraid of that sad

But then, this will free Kyp up to do something else mischief Not that he wasn't going to anyway cool

“But Master Skywalker, be reasonable…”
“No! I won’t kick Kyp Durron off the Council!”
Cal Omas sighed in frustration and rose from his chair. He knew a dead end conversation when he heard one, and he was far too busy to bother himself with such a pointless discussion. “If you won’t, then I will.”
“That’s not the way things work, Cal,” Luke warned. “You can’t just make decisions like that.”
The Chief of State strode purposely across the large expanse of pale carpet and paused at the edge of the living area, halfway between the Jedi and the front door. “Then I’ll just have to change the rules so I can.”

Okay, turns out he is kind of the power-grabbing egomaniac from DN tongue

Mara found Kyp Durron in the very last docking bay of the Mon Calamari spaceport, crouched beneath the underside of an X-wing fighter, a box of greasy parts and soiled rags by his side. As she drew nearer to his hiding place, there was a loud bang, a clatter of durasteel against durasteel, and then a string of curses that could rival anything Han Solo had ever said.
“Charming,” she remarked sarcastically. Another tinny clatter sounded at that, followed by the hollow noise of flesh connecting with something solid. Then, of course, came another splattering of obscenities, before the man crawled out from towering over him.

laugh

Poor Kyp. He's really having a bad day.

Others might have been able to put up with his teasing antics, but not Mara. In one swift move, she’d caught the ball of his left elbow and twisted it at an awkward angle, eliciting a small gasp of surprise from the man. When she had him properly subdued in one of her trademark arm locks – courtesy of her time spent as a smuggler in Karrde’s crew – the scarlet-haired woman hissed, “Shut it, Durron! I’m not here to play games!”

laugh

*Makes note never to mock Mara*

She is so awesome applause

The other Jedi held up a hand to silence her, cutting her off mid-sentence and interrupting with a somewhat rehearsed tirade of his own. “I know what you’re going to say: ‘you shouldn’t have reacted that way, blah, blah. You should have been more considerate of the politicians, blah, blah. You should be grateful for the opportunity to represent the Jedi on the council, and be mature enough to know when to restrain yourself, blah, blah, blah.’ That about cover it?”

He's a slow learner, huh? raised_brow

“Luke put his neck on the line for you in there this morning, and all you can do is make wise-crack jokes about his efforts to protect you? I know Omas and his cronies had no right to say the things they said about you, but Luke didn’t have to stand up for you. He could have just as easily said nothing and agreed with them, but Luke Skywalker has never taken the easy out in life, and I doubt he ever will. He risked his own position with the new government to stop them kicking you off the Council after your little outburst, and yet you sit here, already thinking you know what I’m here to say and ridiculing me for it? How dare you?”

applause

“Then Omas was right,” Mara said softly. “You should never have been put on the Council.”

Ouch.

Kyp shook his head vehemently, picking up the socket wrench he’d discarded earlier and bending down to prepare himself for the shock of the enclosed space beneath the X-wing. “No, tell Luke not to fight this. I don’t want to be the one to alienate the Jedi, not this time. Let Omas and his cronies have their way; it doesn’t matter to me.”

I thought he might say something like that. Kyp has something else in mind mischief

Kyp paused on the panel he was working on long enough to answer her. “No,” he said. His face was pulled taut in a grim smile, and his voice was low with determination. “But if they’re out there looking for Jaina and Anakin, then there’s no place I’d rather be.”

dancing

Exactly what I was hoping for grin

“May the Force be with you, Master Durron,” she said. She didn’t stick around long enough to hear Kyp’s whispered response.
“May the Force be with you, too.”

I really like that Mara didn't try to fight him on it. Great ending for this chapter applause

And it was a great post as well grin Lots of pieces in motion now. I liked Cal Omas for most of this chapter tongue But Mara was awesome all the way through. She seems to be putting out fires all over the place, helping to ease Luke's pain, and taking some of the burden off of his shoulders while he's grieving. I wonder how long it will take Kyp to find Ganner and company thinking

Can't wait for the next chapter, Ant happy Another wonderful post!

Darn. They're going to kick Kyp off the Council. That sucks. I'm feeling really sorry for Kyp right now.

Great update, Ant. I loved the Mara/Kyp conversation applause .

Sorry! As you've probably noticed (because I've been so slack in catching up with your fic, yet again - my apologies!), DRL has claimed me once more. I've got about half of the next chapter completed, and plan on finishing it this weekend. happy

My work Christmas party is on tonight, so I won't be online at all, but I'll catch up with the replies and respond to those Saturday, and then work on having a new postie up for you all. grin That's the plan, anyway.

And then I have to really catch up with your fic, Yobi. blush I only have 1 week until my three-week vacation now, so I'll have ample time shortly. grin

Thanks for the up, and I'll go work on that new update for you. wink

It's very understandable, Ant. DRL has claimed my life as well. Plus my modem has been acting stupid. I'm looking forward to your next update. I can't wait to see what happens to Luke, Mara, and especially Kyp( I think Kyp is cool).

Jade_eyes:

Woo Hoo!!!! Mara told Kyp didn't she??? Foot, I love her in her "predictable" mode. That was wonderful!!!!

Thank you. happy Glad you like Mara telling off Kyp… she really is wonderful. love

I admire Kyp's choice very much, but not if it was just made in the heat of a snit. And I HATE giving the politicians anything that looks like a victory that they can rub in!!!

Yeah, the politicians have kind of won at this point, which sucks, I know. But I think Kyp would have made this decision, regardless of what the politicians thought of him. He’s all about finding Jaina and Anakin and doing the most “active” thing in getting them back. I heart Kyp.

Now, to the melty parts!!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEE!!!! The L/M scene.... SQUEE!!!!!! again!!!

Hehe, glad you liked it. That L/M part was for you, dear!

Feel free to put in more mush at ... very regular intervals!!!

Lol, I’ll try, don’t worry! peace I’m not so used to writing mush, so it’s a lot of fun to do when the muse bites in that area. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

HUGGLES!!!!!!

HUGGLES back!! grin

Thanks so much for reading!

iamobiwan1970:

Luke’s philosophy of get something unpleasant over with!

Hehe, yeah, it’s kinda like ripping off a bandaide..

I loved the L/M interplay...very real, but sweet too.

Thank you very much. It was a lot of fun to write, and the first L/M mush I’ve really written, so I’m glad you enjoyed it. grin

Oh…..nice! L/M mush is good stuff I don't read very often!

I don’t read it often, either, but I’ve come to appreciate it more and more of late.

Busted!

Omas’ apology was so calculated. Then he drops the bomb of kicking Kyp off the council. Luke had strength here! Yay!

Yeah, Omas is a snake. mischief Glad you liked Luke, he really had to stand up and make his voice heard. Expect more of this kind of Luke in later chapters.

Love her thoughts there. So Mara is trying to be diplomatic. Not the easiest thing for her to do.

No it’s not, but she feels she really needs to do this for Luke. Glad you liked Mara here. She’s one of my favourites, so I’m really trying hard to do her character justice.

Well, Mara had a small chance of bringing Kyp around and keeping him on the planet. But knowing the council didn’t want him certainly pushed him to the decision to go after Jaina and Anakin.

Excellent!

tongue Glad you liked Kyp’s decision. Poor Mara, no matter what she said, she was never going to stop Kyp, not once he’d already decided to go after the Solos.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!!

PHGS_Weyr:

Great Job Ant! will try to get a more in depth review later, but this is great and thanks for the PM!

That’s fine, I understand all too well how very little time we all have at this time of year, so I’m just glad you found time to read, and that you enjoyed it. peace Thanks for stopping by.

Jedi_Scribe:

Ahem...yes...well, a little lovin' goes a long way sometimes. Quality time indeed.

LOL!

---

Busted! What a tool - Omas ought to know better than that.

Yeah, he ought to… I was never very fond of his character, so expect him to stay in his “political snake” mode. tongue

Hmmm...I'm not buying it. Omas must be up to something.

You’re right, he is!

He'll figure it out soon enough, no doubt.

Oh yes… Luke isn’t a stupid Jedi, despite public opinion…

Gosh, I'm so sorry that working together to save the galaxy isn't as politically convenient as they would like. Maybe they will feel differently once the Vong take over and they all get their slave implants.

LOL! Loved your reaction there, because it’s how I feel towards more politicians. applause

Good 'ol Luke...still willing to see the good side of things, even if it is a bit naive of him. Too bad the council hardly deserves his cooperation.

Yeah, his “nice guy” approach isn’t always the best for the situation, is it?

For goodness sake, how full of himself can this guy get? Go ahead Skywalker, give him one of Darth Vader's patented Force-chokes from the other side of the room...I won't tell

LOL! laugh Me either. mischief

---

Kyp has every right to be ticked off right now, but taking it out on Mara is both unfair and unwise.

Yes… definitely unwise. wink

Really, he should have seen that coming.

*nods*

That too.

LOL!

I can respect a man who knows his priorities, even if it does cause trouble for Luke with the council. Politics aside, I'm sure Luke would be right there with him.

Yeah, he really would be, and still is, I’d wager.

That says it all.
There really isn't one perfect solution for Kyp here - he wants to do the right thing, and he probably appreciates the support Luke has shown him with the council, but he knows where he can do the most good & it isn't in a committee.

Exactly!! grin I’m glad you see it that way, too. This chapter did a total 360 from how I’d originally planned it, so I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for reading and reviewing, mate!! hugs

Ceillean:

I loved the Mara/Luke mush!

dancing Thank you, thank you! I’m really happy everyone seems to have enjoyed the mush. grin

Snake! Can he do that?! He can't just go ahead and change the rules as he sees fit, can he?
... Politicians! Snakes! Conniving little bastard.

LOL! My thoughts exactly! I’m not really a political fan, as you’ve probably noticed. angel I guess he can do what he likes if he has the support behind him to change the rules..

Obviously Kyp would go out and help find the other Jedi. Or at least join in their fight. What else would there have been for him to do anyway? The Council wouldn't be an option anymore so he'd be stuck doing nothing. And Kyp strikes me as a man needing something to do.

Yes, he certainly is that type of man, and that’s what he plans to do, go and help the others. But everything is not what it seems there… mischief

Great post, as usual.

Thanks so much!! kiss Thanks for reading and for your lovely review!

shahid_chestro:

Thanks for reading. happy Yes, Han and Leia’s reaction is coming up in future chapters.. and don’t worry, I totally understand RL getting in the way.

More replies to come when I have more time. I thought I’d get time on the weekend to catch up, but things just got way out of hand, so I did these ones quickly during my work smoko break.

A festive note from Ant...

Happy Holidays my faithful readers! dancing The silly season is upon us all again, and just before I logged off the net after counting down the last few hours of Christmas Eve at home in my wonderfully air-conditioned bedroom, I thought I'd drop in my Holocaust thread (which I've been neglecting again) and wish you all a wonderful Christmas. happy

Christmas came early for me this year, as I finally managed to save up enough cash for my new computer!! dancing The day it arrived on courier last week was about 7 months in the making, and I was overjoyed when I was able to unwrap it from its pretty white packaging and switch it on for the first time. Of course, I've managed to christen it with much typing and blogging, and have been trying my hardest to get caught up on the boards. It hasn't happened yet, but I have high hopes for the new year. wink

Tomorrow I'll be spending the day with family and friends, have cooked a delicious roast cashew and honey Christmas ham (which is cooling on the kitchen bench) and have managed to wrap thirty presents. The joys of having a big family!! tongue And as if all that isn't enough to keep me busy, tomorrow I'm also turning 23!! dancing I'll be taking piccies of the big day, and for those of you who check out my blog from time to time, keep an eye out for a few pics that might appear tomorrow evening. I should have time to upload them by then, but if not, it'll be the next day.

Anyway, I'm rambling again. I just wanted to thank you all for the support and lovely, kind comments you've each given me over the last year. hugs Your words and assistance have meant more to me than I can articulate, and I'm so thrilled to have had the privilege of speaking with you all. happy

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe, and very Merry Christmas! Enjoy the day, wherever you may be, and I'll no doubt see you all when the craziness is over! grin kiss

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!!

Gah! I’m so behind in my replies to this!!! blush Consider this part of my catch-up plan… and I apologize profusely for being so behind in this.. I thought I’d done these ages ago!

Tahi:

Caught up at last. Great story idea with the rescue mission, and it's good to see Kyp having a major role. It's true that Luke and Kyp have been at loggerheads more often than not. Ah, men!

Yay! Nice to see you back on board! dancing But in saying that, I completely understand RL getting in the way… we all know how much time I’ve had for reviewing and such of late (is soo embarrassed) blush

I’m glad you like where the plot’s headed at the moment, and that you’re liking Kyp’s larger role. grin He’s such a great character (I blame iamobiwan for falling so in love with him – she’s almost single-handedly made him one of my all-time favourites!).

I liked that bit - nice character analysis of both Mara and Luke and the way they balance each other.

Thank you. hugs I’m glad you liked it.. I have a tendency to psycho-analyse my characters a bit, so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Poor Luke - always having to walk the tightrope isn't he? Such is the role of the leader sadly.

Yeah. sad He’s really going through the wringer, and it’s more than likely going to get harder for him as time goes by.

It will be interesting to see how the rescue mission deals with their challenges.

It will indeed… that is coming up in Chapter 7 (when I get around to posting it, and Chapter 6, of course).

Thanks for reading and taking the time to get caught up! happy

YodaKenobi:

Yobie!! Hey!! *throws a high-five Yoda’s way*

I'm so sorry I haven't replied to this before now Things have been really crazy lately.

Don’t worry at all.. I am so far behind in your ‘fic that I feel bad sending out PM’s to let you know I’ve updated mine. blush I’m getting on top of things, though, as these reviews suggest, so it shouldn’t be too much longer and I’ll be back on track. My goal is to have all of my reviews and updates caught up with by the end of January (I’m being realistic here). tongue

I've had a few pairs over the years. Mine are just brown

I’ve never had a brown pair… I once had those floral ones, though. Really girlie, but really cool, too.

A massage from Mara Jade... Nice

I’ll remember that and send you one for your bifday wink

Can't really argue with that. Kyp says what's on his mind, no matter what. He's prone to outbursts

He is indeed… it’s one of his traits I love most. love

Exactly what I was thinking

LOL!

You're bad, Ant

Sorry, couldn’t resist!! mischief

So what is it they were going to do?

Practice CPR… a Jedi can never have enough knowledge in that department, you know. wink

LOL!

A nice getup for Mara too

Glad you approve. tongue

That's so sad to picture.

It is. sad It was a hard section to write, actually, to get in that frame of mind.

Love the descriptions of the Skywalker's apartment. Very vivid.

Thank you very much! grin I thought long and hard about it, and had a 3D image of exactly what it all looked like in my mind before I started writing it. silly Maybe that’s taking things a little too far… blush whistling

Silly Omas. Thinking he could do something in a Jedi's home without them sensing it

Yeah, he really should have known better. rolling_eyes

Busted.

Big time!

Luke may have added some hot chocolate

I add hot chocolate to mine… doesn’t everyone?? whistling

Awesome Glad to see the mostly reasonable Omas from DW here and not the crazy, bitter Cal Omas from DN.

Erm… yeah… I don’t think you’re so pleased with him as a character anymore, though. mischief

I'm sure Scaur has a better plan on how to neutralize the Yuuzhan Vong threat anyway. Perhaps some sort of biological weapon

It’s been mentioned once or twice, I think (not in this ‘fic yet, but you get my drift). silly

I was afraid of that

But then, this will free Kyp up to do something else Not that he wasn't going to anyway

You’re right there!! grin

Okay, turns out he is kind of the power-grabbing egomaniac from DN

LOL! Yeah, he’s more like that version of Omas. tongue

Poor Kyp. He's really having a bad day.

The Force certainly wasn’t shining on him that day. silly

*Makes note never to mock Mara*

She is so awesome

She is the optimum of cool!! cool

He's a slow learner, huh?

If you asked Jaina, she’d say yes. silly

I thought he might say something like that. Kyp has something else in mind

Something involving lasers and flying ships, perhaps?

Exactly what I was hoping for

Glad you’re excited. Just wait until Chapter 7!

I really like that Mara didn't try to fight him on it. Great ending for this chapter

Thank you. kiss

And it was a great post as well Lots of pieces in motion now. I liked Cal Omas for most of this chapter But Mara was awesome all the way through. She seems to be putting out fires all over the place, helping to ease Luke's pain, and taking some of the burden off of his shoulders while he's grieving. I wonder how long it will take Kyp to find Ganner and company

The plot has certainly thickened over the last few chapters, that’s for sure. mischief I’m glad you liked Mara, she’s an awesome character to write, so expect more of her (and Kyp, and Ganner).

As for Kyp finding Ganner and the others… you’ll find out in Chapter 6. wink

Can't wait for the next chapter, Ant Another wonderful post!

Thank you very much!! hugs hugs Thanks for the awesome review, my friend! It was fabulous to read, and really made my day. peace

I’ll try and reward you with the new post really soon… I’m hoping to update all my current WIP’s by the end of the month as part of my 1-year anniversary present to myself and my wonderful readers. Thanks for sticking with me.

Earthknight:

Darn. They're going to kick Kyp off the Council. That sucks. I'm feeling really sorry for Kyp right now.

Yeah, they are. sad I feel sorry for Kyp, too, but don’t worry, he’ll be fine. grin He’s got a rescue mission to crash. wink

Great update, Ant. I loved the Mara/Kyp conversation

Thanks so much! kiss That one was a lot of fun to write, too. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for reading.

It's very understandable, Ant. DRL has claimed my life as well. Plus my modem has been acting stupid. I'm looking forward to your next update. I can't wait to see what happens to Luke, Mara, and especially Kyp( I think Kyp is cool).

Thanks for the understanding, buddy! happy I know you understand the pressures of DRL, and I hope things ease up for you, too. And also that your modem gets better.. it really bugs me when mine plays up.

Hopefully you won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what happens to them all. I’m planning to have the next update really finished soon.

Thanks for hanging in there with this one, guys! peace I’m really sorry there’s been such long lags in between updates… hopefully this New Year has brought along with it a less hectic schedule for me work-wise, so that I don’t get so behind again when I manage to catch up.

A new update for you all.... finally!! blush Sorry it's taken so long, I'm trying to get on top of things in the land of RL, but it's not easy, and I fear it will always be a struggle from now on. I have just been given a new role at work which keeps me busier than ever before, and while that's good news for me work-wise, it doesn't help my writing, original or fanfiction. sad Please bear with me... I do plan on finishing this 'fic this year...

Chapter 6: Road to Recovery.

“Come on, Tahiri! You have to work with me here!”

The young girl groaned in response to Tekli’s persistent nagging and gripped the two solid bars protruding horizontally from the ground until her knuckles turned white. “I’m trying!” she protested, not even flinching as her voice echoed loudly off the stark white walls of the rehabilitation wing. “I just… I just need to lie down for a moment.”

She was standing in between the two matt bars, both hands clamped firmly over the diameter of each one, holding her tiny frame in an upright position. After spending two months suspended in a bacta tank, some of her muscles had begun to break down from the lack of movement, and she was now forced to undergo the painful task of reanimating them.

Tekli had agreed to help, and with Ganner missing, the job of encouraging and pushing Tahiri to work harder on her healing had been left solely up to the little Chadra Fan. They’d worked on her arms first, slowly rotating them in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions until the only feeling pulsing through them had been a dull ache, and not the burning sensation she’d been feeling since waking from her deep slumber.

Today was the first day they’d decided to tackle her legs. It had been excruciatingly painful at the beginning, but as the day wore on, the pain had gradually subsided. Now, it was almost at a bearable level; however, Tahiri was just too exhausted to keep up the rigorous act of walking herself down the length of the bars.

She knew Tekli could sense her frustration at this through the Force, which made her insistence all the more annoying, yet necessary. Tahiri wanted nothing more than to be back to full strength, but her body wasn’t allowing it. Each day ticked by slower than the previous, with little change in her mobility. It was as if some invisible force was stilting her progress; stopping her from rejoining the battle like she so sorely wanted. Tekli had told her that she was simply expecting too much, too soon. The Healer was constantly reminding her that she was still getting over the massive injury she’d suffered on Myrkr, that she’d almost died, and would hence take a significant amount of time to recuperate.

Time was something Tahiri had very little of these days. Less than a standard week ago, she’d woken up to Ganner Rhysode’s concerned face and told that the boyfriend she’d so desperately tried to save had perished back on Myrkr, along with his older brother, Jacen, and sister Jaina. At the time, she’d been too shocked to know what to do, or how to react. Self-blame seemed as good a place as any to start with the grieving process, so that’s what she’d done.

For the first two days, Tahiri had lain in a shell of self-pity, wallowing in her own mistakes and crying until the tears had all but dried up in their ducts, nothing left but her own brand of mortal salt to dispel. Ganner had gone by this stage, presumably regrouping with the original strike team to mount a rescue mission for their dead friends.

Tahiri was more than a little hurt that he hadn’t thought to mention it to her. Sure, she was still too raw to re-enter the battle front, so being involved in any kind of search and rescue was out of the question, but she and Ganner had grown close over the last two months, and she’d expected him to have the decency to confide in her on things of importance. Running off to find Jaina and Anakin was certainly high on her importance list, yet he’d not said one word to her about it, simply disappearing without so much as a goodbye or a ‘nice knowing you.’

To say it hurt would be an understatement. She was still coming to terms with her own loss and failure on Myrkr, and then to have Ganner abandon her like he did was more than she could bear. After her conversation with Master Skywalker yesterday, Tahiri had completely shut down, not even moving for the most basic of functions. She’d felt betrayed, unwanted, and most of all, utterly alone.

And there was nothing she could do about it.

In her weakened state, Tahiri’s legs gave way beneath her, causing her thin, sinewy frame to come crashing down to the soft deck below. Her hands, which had still been gripping the set of bars, slipped away from their task, the sound of crunching bones meeting her ears as she splayed them out in front of her seconds before the fall. The pain that followed the dislocating of her joints was nothing but a crude numbness, overshadowed by the fire currently coursing its way through her back and leg muscles. She cried out all the same, more in vexation at Tekli’s lack of attentiveness than in the agony she should be feeling.

The little Chadra Fan started at Tahiri’s hoarse bellowing, spinning around in a tight arc from where she’d been standing, staring off in the opposite direction. She rushed over to the young blonde’s side, her soft golden fur rippling like waves against the resistance of the artificial air flowing past her as she ran. In two seconds flat, she had the girl levitated and on her back, and was in the process of putting her in a semi-lucid healing trance.

Tahiri mumbled her protests, trying to explain to the diminutive Healer that it was nothing a bit of bacta patches and sleep couldn’t fix, but Tekli would have none of it. The anxiety swirling through the Force told her that the Healer was mentally admonishing herself for being so careless, particularly with such a delicate patient. Though Tahiri wouldn’t agree with the ‘delicate’ part, she wasn’t entirely adverse to the fact that the Chadra Fan was at least part to blame for what had just occurred.

“And you were making such progress, too,” she heard Tekli murmur in a disappointed tone as she meticulously bandaged up her injured wrists. “I was just so surprised to see Ganner…”

Ganner? Tahiri’s fair eyebrows shot almost all the way up to her hairline at the mention of the older Jedi’s name. Ganner had been missing for the better part of a week, yet Tekli had just said she was surprised to see him, meaning that he was here, right now, and had distracted the Healer from her task of rehabilitating the young girl. If Ganner was here, than that meant he was back from his mission – or that he didn’t go at all.

Batting the Chadra Fan’s furry hands away, Tahiri broke out of the Force hold on her body and steadied herself by resting her weight on one of the two horizontal bars standing mere centimetres away from where she was being tended to. When she’d taken a few calming breaths, she lifted her blonde head and scanned the surrounding area with a set of wide, emerald eyes. Sure enough, when she got to the entrance at the other side of the room, there stood Ganner Rhysode, dressed in a bland ensemble of tan on tan.

“Ganner!” she croaked, wanting to run over to him but not having the strength in her legs to complete the task.

The man flashed her a guilty smile that was recognizable to her even from this great distance, before taking a few awkward steps towards her, his hands hidden behind his back. Even though his journey across the room was slow and somewhat uneasy, he didn’t look injured in any way. That didn’t sit well with her and Master Skywalker’s assumption that he’d planned the whole ‘Jedi abandonment’ thing; Tahiri would have thought that if he’d been off on a mission of some kind, he’d at least have a few cuts and bruises.

“What are you doing here?” She didn’t mean for the words to come across so accusing, but she didn’t bother correcting her tone.

Ganner stopped mid-step, staring at her with an open-mouthed expression. “I-I’m sorry… I d-didn’t realize… I just wanted to see how you were doing,” he stammered nervously.

It was then that Tahiri realized the older Jedi thought she meant here in this room, and not here in general, but by this stage, her mind had reminded her of the fact that Ganner had lied to her and left her behind, so her reply came out much colder than it otherwise would have. “I thought you’d still be off with the others, looking for Jaina and Anakin.”

“The others?” Ganner repeated, his shocked expression turning into one of puzzlement. “Looking for Jaina and… what are talking about, Tahiri?”

Now it was her turn to look bewildered. She’d thought for sure that he’d organized the Jedi revolt, but the look on his face was quickly making the young girl re-think her initial theory. “You mean you didn’t go off with Tesar, Lowie and the others?”

Ganner’s brow furrowed as his mind processed the information she’d just given him. His eyes flashed briefly with an unknown emotion before he addressed her, stepping the last few feet until he was at her side. “I still don’t understand… where exactly did Tesar and the others go?”

Realization dawned on Tahiri at that moment, and she couldn’t stop the gasp that issued from her open mouth. “You really had no idea, did you?”

“No idea about what?”

“They went back,” she told him, letting her pained body slip the last few inches so that she was resting on the soft mat at her feet. “All of them… they went back to Myrkr.”

Ganner stopped his journey mid-step, staring ahead with eyes so wide they looked to be straining out of their sockets. All of the colour had drained from his face, making him look like some kind of white apparition. It wasn’t very becoming. “Myrkr…” he echoed with a slight shake of his head. “How could they?”

“How could they?” the blonde repeated, her voice rising to a pitchy crescendo. “They’re searching for Jaina and Anakin!” She was confused and also angered by Ganner’s attitude. He’d been the one to give the abandonment command on Myrkr, and their friends had still been alive when they’d left, yet he was clearly incensed that any of the strike team members would feel the need to attempt a rescue. Tahiri couldn’t grasp where the man was coming from. Didn’t he want Jaina and Anakin to be brought home safely?

“It’s insane!” Ganner bellowed, breaking into her thoughts. His cheeks had regained their colour after his outburst, and were now flushing a bright fuchsia. “I saw how many warriors were there; I remember! There’s no way they made it out alive - even the Solos aren’t that lucky.”

“But you didn’t see them die, you told me yourself! They were alive when you left them!”

“No, you’re right, they weren’t quite dead, but they were as good as.”

His androgynous tone rang harshly in her ears, but Tahiri didn’t believe it: she didn’t want to; she couldn’t. When she’d heard the news of the rogue mission from Luke, it had given the girl something she never thought she’d have again; a feeling that each of the Jedi had lost the day they’d been forced to leave behind their dearest of friends.

Hope.

And now Ganner was trying to take her newfound hope away with his painful realism. Tahiri wouldn’t have it. She needed the little hope she’d managed to salvage since waking from bacta, they all did. One could not function without it, and you certainly couldn’t expect to win a war as brutal as the one raging currently without some faith.

“There was a chance,” Tahiri began, though she couldn’t hear her own voice for the ringing in her ears. “There was a chance they made it, that they beat them…” She trailed off as Ganner shook his head, and the ringing sound grew so loud that all she could hear was his disbelieving words, repeating over and over in her mind: They were as good as… they were as good as… they were as good as…

“No!” she cried, more to silence her own demons than anyone else’s. “Tesar and Zekk, they would never… they wouldn’t abandon the fight without… without some kind of proof…”

Ganner was now at her side, kneeling down on one knee and enveloping her small, quivering frame with a pair of strong arms. She fell into the embrace with grateful ease, the dam walls that had been holding her emotions in check for the last hour opening wide, letting loose a torrent of angry, tortured tears. Her despair flowed freely across the panes of her porcelain-like face, and she clutched at the sleeves of Ganner’s brown Jedi robes, wishing to the Force that she never had to let go.

Her hope was gone once again, washed away in the sea of her renewed grief. She could blame Ganner for this, but the truth was that she’d known, deep down, that there was no proof of the Solos’ survival. Tahiri had wanted to believe – so much – that Anakin was out there somewhere, alive; but he was gone in the Force, his whispered voice that usually rested in the back of her mind silent, empty. The only logical explanation for two months of nothingness was that he wasn’t coming back: they weren’t coming back.

All she could do now was get used to life without him, and try her hardest to move on. Anakin would have wanted her to.

After her tears had subsided for the time being, she drew away from the hug and looked up into the older man’s pale, anguished eyes, brimming with tears of their own. “I’m sorry,” she said meekly, blushing. “I didn’t mean –“

“It’s fine,” he interjected, cutting her apology off short. “I shouldn’t have said the things I said, either. We all make mistakes from time to time.”

Tahiri nodded. She herself had made more than her fair share over the last months, and she would always wear the consequences of those mistakes, for the rest of her life.

They were silent for a moment, both happy to use to time to get their emotions in check once more. Tekli stood off to one side, her big brown eyes staring resolutely at the tufts of glossy fur sticking out from between her toes. The Healer had obviously decided not to get involved in their discussion. It was probably a wise move on her part; both Ganner and Tahiri had a reputation for being rather hot-headed and stubborn in their stances.

“Wait a minute,” Tahiri said, looking straight at Ganner and narrowing her pretty green eyes as she spoke. “You never told me where you’ve been all this time. If you weren’t planning a rogue mission to Myrkr, then where were you?”

Ganner glanced up at her face through lowered lashes, his expression more than a little bashful. “I was, ah, still on Ossus, actually,” he mumbled. The colour in his cheeks got significantly darker as he said this, and Tahiri got the distinct impression through the Force that he was very embarrassed about giving a straight answer.

Spit it out, already! She grumbled, conveying her impatience through the Force-bond the two had managed to forge while on Myrkr together.

“I was hiding, if you must know.” He stared down at his hands as he continued, clenching and unclenching his fingers as a way to calm his nerves. “I was so disgusted with myself for how I’d handled things on Myrkr… for leaving them be – oh, I can’t even say it!” Ganner punched himself in the leg: it was a single hit, but the force behind it was considerable, and Tahiri couldn’t help the small sympathy wince that followed the motion. She grabbed at the hand that had struck, latching on tightly and giving the appendage a reassuring squeeze. The girl hadn’t had much experience in comforting someone, but she figured Ganner would get the general idea.

He did, smiling thinly at her before finishing his explanation. “After I spoke to you that first day you were awake, I thought you’d hate me for what I’d done, and I already loathed myself enough as it was, so I fled to my sleeping chambers, gathered enough belongings to see me through for a few days, and headed out into the jungle. I didn’t mean to worry anyone, and especially not you, but I wasn’t thinking clearly, and to be honest, I didn’t think anyone would miss me.”

“I missed you, Ganner,” Tahiri whispered.

“And you weren’t the only one,” Tekli piped up from the side, two small, flurry hands planted firmly on her hips. “General Antilles missed you at the outpost, where you were supposed to be almost a week ago now.”

Ganner grimaced. “I hope you didn’t have to handle too many irate calls on my behalf.”

“Just the one, really,” the Chadra Fan replied before Tahiri even had her response formed. “From Master Skywalker. Apparently, they’re blaming you for this Jedi revolt.”

Ganner looked to Tahiri for some kind of reassurance on the matter and received nothing but a tired sigh from the girl. “It’s true,” she told him. “In fact, Master Durron is on his way here now, looking for the proof that you’ve gone off on some crusade to save the Solos, before he jets off himself to join the others.”

“Sithspit!” Ganner cursed. “I’ve really kriffed everything up, haven’t I? First Jaina and Anakin, and now this…”

“No,” Tahiri said softly, “No, you haven’t wrecked anything. We can sort all of this out, you’ll see. Master Durron will arrive and see you here, and he can tell the council that you had nothing to do with the rescue mission, and then everything will be fine.”

The older Jedi shuddered in her grasp, turning his head away from her in an expression of disgust: not at her words, but at the tumultuous emotions swirling within his conflicting mind. “Everything won’t be fine, Tahiri. Jaina and Anakin are dead, because of a decision I made, and now the others have gone off on a crusade that could see them killed, or worse, and that could have been avoided if only I’d been honest with them in the first place.”

He stood from his position at her side and took a step backwards, shaking his head as he went. “Everything is not fine, and I don’t think things will ever be fine again.”

Tahiri desperately wanted to contradict Ganner’s dismal statement, to tell him he was wrong, and that life would go on, but in the wake of her own realization about Anakin and the future, words of optimism escaped her.

If there was but one hope left for them all in this turbulent galaxy, then Tahiri couldn’t see it, and neither, at this point, could anyone else.

The rehab part at the beginning with Tahiri made me cringe a little due to the wonderfully detailed descriptions of her pain. It must've been extremely painful for Tahiri. The conversation with Ganner and Tahiri was very touching though. I'm glad Tahiri is not mad at him anymore. By the way, you write Tahiri so well, Ant. You really do a great job in showing her emotions and feelings.

Great update as always, my friend applause .
