Hopefully neither side is asking Daala to win a battle for them... But just what do they want from her? I'd love to see Leia and Mara exchange more than words right now, but that might not be good for Ben and Jaina.
And at least we have a mention of Han. Is there hope that he might be a positive influence here?

Very interesting thing you threw in there, about Leia's being half-crazy.
I never thought of Admiral Daala and had no clue who it was 'til Ben said it. Although immediately afterwards I berated my stupidity.
I look forward to your next update! And don't worry, I have a problem with updating on time too.

Jaina: Yup, catfight. I couldn't resist. And one of your guesses is right.
Jade_eyes: They'll come away with something, yes. Will it be what they wanted? Probably not.
padawanlost: Guarantee: Han is alive now. I don't quite know where, but he is alive and will show up later in the story. And Leia and Mara do exchange more than words. Read on. (I've been wanting to do this for a long time...) Remember how deceptive both Leia and Mara can be, so no guarantee that they'll tell Daala the truth about what they want from her.
MarasFire: Leia is more or less insane. You'll learn a bit more about why in this post. And you could say that Daala walked in and demanded to be added to the story, so like usual I acquiesced.
My updates will be on time if Vertebrate Biology decides to give me a break.
Jaina sat down next to Ben, shaking her head. “Is there anyone sane left in the universe?” she muttered.
“Do I count?” Ben asked.
“Considering your parents, no.” Jaina sighed. “I wonder how long it will take for them to kill each other in an argument.”
Mara said something that sounded like, “anyways, it wasn’t my fault that Luke fell,” with a roll of her eyes. Leia responded with a shove, and Mara retaliated with a slap…
Jaina actually giggled in spite of herself. “Okay, Ben, after this, our moms can’t tell us to be mature anymore after we saw them fighting like little kids.”
Ben was laughing too. “How did they ever get into such a big fight anyways? It’s kinda obvious that my Dad’s a Sith and your mom is crazy. Why is that such a big deal?”
Daala cut in. “I don’t care who is a Sith and who is sane, but I do care about those two killing each other before I have a chance to get the truth out of both of them.” She stormed over to Leia and Mara, and broke them up with great difficulty.
“Listen, you two. I don’t care how badly you think of each other- I don’t like either of you any more than you like each other.
Just put off killing until I’ve had my questions answered. Leia Solo, I’m starting with you.
“Why are you here?”
Leia rolled her eyes and started rearranging her mussed hair. “I need your help to keep myself and Jaina away from Luke for a little while until I figure out where to go next.”
“Why are you still alive?”
“I don’t understand.”
“You ran away from the all-powerful Emperor. You should be long dead by now. And here you are, still alive if not sane-“
“Don’t ever accuse me of being crazy!” Leia jumped up with indignation. “Fine, I’ve dabbled in the Dark Side- perhaps more than dabbled. I played Luke’s game of psychological torture for quite a few years, until I’d had enough of the Dark Side. And I’ve been on the run throughout the galaxy causing trouble, but I’ve done nothing to make anyone think that I’m crazy.”
“Why are you still alive?”
“You’re an Imperial all right; you’re not going to rest until you’ve had a satisfactory answer. Fine. I’m still alive because I’ve been hiding here and there. It’s none of your business where. I haven’t dared go back to the Rebels since they’ll think I’m a traitor. So I’ve been on the run. That’s all I’m willing to tell you.”
Daala sighed angrily. “What do you want out of Jaina?”
Jaina glanced up in surprise. Did her mother have an ulterior motive for rescuing her?
“You really want to know?” Leia hissed. “I took Jaina away from Luke out of pure spite. I seriously don’t care if she ever becomes a Jedi. I don’t care if she ends up a Sith. I just want my psychotic ex-brother to stay away from Jaina and let her screw up her life on her own.”
Jaina just barely managed to sit down in the chair rather than falling to the floor. “I thought you rescued me because you cared about me and didn’t want me to fall!” she yelled, unexpectedly close to tears.
For some reason, Daala did not look surprised at all. “I have no reason to believe anything you say, Solo. Just for the strong possibility of your lies, you are now under arrest. Do not expect any mercy from the Emperor, considering what you have said about him.”
Leia coldly regarded Daala with the look of one whose enemy has made an enormous mistake. “You’ll regret this,” she whispered.
Next up: Mara's explanation.
PM's will come later- I have about another half hour before the library closes, and I need to return a book... PM's by 10:30, promise.

 Leia is so insensitive!  Poor Jaina, she's really come from a messed-up family. The curse of being a Skywalker, I suppose.

Wow!!! The steel trap has just closed around Leia again and she's just burned any bridges she had with Jaina  Mara's explanation oughta be good.  I must say this is the first Leia/Mara physical battle I've ever seen LOL You've definitely turned Leia's character inside out

I can't believe that Leia would say something like that to her daughter! Poor Jaina. I love how Ben and Jaina had a commentary while their moms fought like little kids...talk about role reversal. I wonder what changed in Leia and Daala's relationship...I thought Leia trusted Daala? Ah, well, it's obviously misplaced. It would be entertaining if Daala tried to arrest both Mara and Leia after Mara's explanation - she might have a bit of difficulty.

Poor Jaina, Leia's comments sure leave very little doubt to me that she is totally crazy if she can say that about her daughter. And here I thought they might have a better relationship here than they did when Jaina was young in profic
I did like the idea that Daala had to break them up, though just why neither used the Force to get really out of control has me wondering. Can't wait to see how Mara weasels out of this. I'm alos hoping to see Leia get that vengeance on Daala.

MarasFire: I think right now we can call Jaina's family very messed-up. But don't worry, there still is hope...
Jade_eyes: One of the most fun parts of writing this story is turning Leia's character inside out and making her evil and crazy. It's quite a fun brain-stretch. And the catfight was just plain awesome to plan and write- at least I didn't kill myself trying to choreograph this one. The trap is indeed closing, but whose trap remains to be seen.
Jaina: I couldn't resist making the kids be mature while the grownups got in a fight. Leia did trust Daala, but trusting people is not all that wise around here... And Mara's explanation.. well, that'll come soon.
padawanlost: Daala intervened just before the Force was pulled in, or else there would have been some serious damage. What with the way this story goes, it could happen... And Leia is crazy. Sooner or later I'll write something nice with Leia and Jaina getting along, but at the rate I'm going... haha, not happening until summer break.
PHGS_Weyr: I have been a Daala lover since I first got into SW, and she does try to enter most of my longer stories; she usually succeeds.
There will not be an update next week, since I'm going to be on spring break and at home with my dial-up internet sleeping.
Mara smiled like a rather triumphant predator. “You realized that was a smart thing to do.”
“I’m not in the habit of collecting enemies without doing something about them.” Daala wore a smug smile as well. “I’ve had enough of Leia Solo’s games. At least her ex-husband still makes some sense, even if he is a bit crazy as well.”
Jaina had to enter the conversation. “Did you guys set my mom up?”
“Yes.” Mara looked totally calm and collected. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“Yes!” Jaina was fighting to not cry. “I don’t care if Mom’s crazy. I just want answers and I want a way to defeat the Empire!”
“If that’s all you want, then why were you consorting with an insane Sith acolyte whose true motives are probably only known to the Emperor?” Daala shot back.
Jaina faltered. “You… mean my mom…was working for the Emperor all along?”
Both Daala and Mara nodded.
This time, Jaina couldn’t resist and actually did burst into tears. “I thought she didn’t want anything else to do with him.”
“Sith are masters of deception,” Mara said quietly as she moved to comfort Jaina. Luckily, Jaina did not see the duplicitous and knowing look that passed between Mara and Daala.
But Ben did, and his eyes narrowed as he realized his mother was setting people up ruthlessly. First Luke… she had probably brought him to the Dark Side. Then the New Republic. Then Leia, for the first time when she fell to the Dark Side. And again, trying to permanently destroy an old rival. Now it looked like Jaina was going to be next, trapped by a powerful Sith who was manipulating everything and everyone. And just for good measure and covering tracks, Daala would probably die too.
But what about Ben? Mara wouldn’t harm her own son, right? He was going to be the next Emperor, right?
Ben could have sworn he heard Mara’s voice in his ear, feeding him reassuring pleasantries disguised behind a serpent’s tongue.
Jacen sat down heavily on the floor of the prison cell. He was positive he was in the Lusankya, wherever it was now hiding. He had been there for longer than he could keep track of, as the Imperials tried to break him and find out crucial Rebel secrets.
Of course, Jacen knew no Rebel secrets. He and Jaina hadn’t been in contact with the Rebels for many years.
None of the Imps believed that. They were all sure that Jacen was hiding something.
Jacen heard little of the gossip of the other prisoners. But there was one thing that stood out in his mind… some rumor about a man who had been a Rebel at one point, and had now been captured and kept here. Something about him being a general once, but he had resigned his commission… and even been a pirate, many long years ago…
It sounded so much like Han Solo. Jacen had almost lost hope of ever seeing his father again, but now these half-heard, mangled rumors were enough.
And there was still the matter of Jaina. For some inexplicable reason, Jacen could still sense Jaina. She was in distress, and it seemed like maybe her trust had been betrayed by one she thought she could trust.
Jacen wondered what was really going on behind the scenes. Maybe it was true that eh Emperor was not as omnipotent as he liked to present himself.

Wow!!! Plots behind and in between more plots!! Leia's and Mara's schemes against each other and everyone else--woo! All tangled together. One or both of them's gonna outsmart themselves. So... Mara appears to be the mastermind behind all the manipulations and betrayals but... that could be a misdirection or for totally unknown motives.  This plot is really keeping me on my toes LOL

Oh, and who is Jaina going to trust now? First she finds out her mom is still a bad guy, and then she realizes that two other bad guys are the only hope she might have to escape her uncle- the big bad guy. She's getting a pretty Sithly education here. Ben should be wondering about his mother right now, cause I wouldn't put anything past the whole bunch. Hopefully Ben and Jaina can help save each other here.
You always give a little moment of hope, and now that Jacen has heard rumors of his father being alive and also on Lusankya I can only pray that it isn't another deception from his captors, hoping to use his father as a weakness in his resistance.
This just keeps getting more and more insidious. Well done

I love that line for no real reason.
Whoosh, all of the lies! I'm not sure whether or not to believe Mara that Leia is actually working for Luke. She really could just be royally messed up in the head, not even sure of what she's doing. And poor Ben: it can't be good to always be aware of the fact that your mother could betray or kill you.
Hmm, if and when Jacen finds his father, I wonder if Han would be able to go against his (ex?-)wife and former friend, Luke. Surely there must be reason that he went into hiding, or else returned to smuggling or whatnot, instead of fighting for the Rebellion...

padawanlost: I promise a happy ending when it's all over. Don't know who might die... or what might happen... but there will be a happy ending. Jaina and Ben could be in some major trouble soon if they don't get their acts together.
MarasFire: Jaina and Ben have some serious problem-solving to do. Some of it will get done for them. And you'll find out more about Han in this installment.

All right... I'm out of good excuses for not updating. A convention, lots of homework, the fact that Italian is ruining my life now, and the upcoming Fencing Nationals are among the better excuses. Without further ado, your update is here.
“I don’t believe a word of what you say,” Ben heard himself saying. He looked up in shock for a moment, wondering why he’d so openly told the truth about what he thought of his mother.
Mara smiled sweetly. “Ben, honey, of course you’re inclined to mistrust everyone. Everything has been going wrong lately and everything has changed. But you can always trust me.”
“You liar,” Daala hissed. “Listen, Jade, you’ve been shamelessly manipulating the entire galaxy for so many years, and I’m not going to stand by and let you destroy an innocent child. Get away from Ben or I’ll shoot.” She leveled a blaster straight at Mara.
“I’d think you knew better than to threaten someone who owns a lightsaber,” Mara hissed, angry at this sudden betrayal. “Don’t threaten me, Daala. I could ruin your life and career; I know more than enough about you to do so.”
“Perhaps you should be silenced permanently.”
“You’d need to get around a lightsaber first.”
“That’s not hard.” Daala flipped the blaster to the Stun setting, and after one shot…
Mara collapsed to the floor. Unconsciously, Ben let out a sigh of relief. Jaina looed totally lost and blank. Daala leaned back against the wall, looking rather pleased with herself.
“Jaina and Ben, you two deserve to know what’s going on.” Daala spoke far more candidly than either of them expected. “Leia has been through quite a bit under the Emperor, and she’s realy not in any mental state to be doing naything now. I’m sending her to a doctor and when she’s back together mentally, then we’ll see where that’s going. Right now I don’t trust her at all and wouldn’t be surprised if she’s still under the Emperor’s power.
“Jaina, your father is still alive. He was captured by Isard and is on the Lusankya. I don’t have an explanation as to why, but he wasn’t broken. I believe your brother has ended up there as ell, and extracting both of them is my main priority after keeping you safe.
“Ben, I have no idea what is wrong with your mother. She has been causing more problems lately than I care to deal with, and I do think she wanted me dead. It is true- Mara knows enough about me to get me court-martialed and probably executed, so I do want to permanently remove her as a threat. Right now though, killing the Empress would be far worse than letting her dig up the skeletons in my closet.
“Finally, you two are going to stay here on the Gorgon and stay hidden. I don’t need you captured by anyone else until I finish dealing with this situation. So stay here and don’t do anything stupid.” Daala stormed out, sending in her guards to get Mara to the brig.
Jaina looked at Ben, not sure whether to laugh or cry Ben looked at Jaina, and smiled.
“Well, at least there’s still some hope left.”
Jaina hoped that Ben was right.
Jacen’s uneasy sleep was interrupted by a stormtrooper at the door of his cell. He was handed a flimsiplast note, and then the stormtrooper just walked away without a word. Jacen sat down to read, barely able to believe it.
Jacen, if you’re reading this, then it means that my bribe did work. When I found out you were here, I had to contact you and let you know about a few things.
I don’t know what you’ve heard about your mother. She almost fell to the Dark Side and is insane now. I don’t think we’re married anymore, but I do want her to get her act together. She’s still working for Luke, and she could do some serious damage to you and Jaina if she gets to you.
I’ve been here for about a year, but for some reason they aren’t trying to get any information out of me. I have no idea what they want, and you know Imperials- it may be best not to ask.
Don’t trust Mara Jade, the Empress. She’s a tricky little Sithspawn, and she’s the real power behind the throne. Luke told me that she never did fully leave the Dark Side, and she corrupted him. I think she’ll try to do the same to you and Jaina if she gets to you. Stay away from her.
Jacen, be careful, and don’t tell the Imps anything. Destroy this note- don’t let them find out about it. I will be in touch with you and try to plan an escape.

If the note was for real, it would probably be Jacen’s only hope out. He was shocked to read what had happened to Mom, and the truth about Mara…
Was anyone trustworthy anymore?
Things might just be looking up.
