Thanks, gang! cool And after a long hiatus, here's another intense round!

Chapter Four: Headstrong

In one of the wider chasms inside of Droid World, a small cluster of humans fought with the ferocity of a crazed ranchor. Small and medium sized blaster fire razed the air in orange and red, as walking machinations lumbered their way to the group and fell far from their intended targets.

Scores of shattered limbs, servos and motors littered the floor. When silence took over again, the noises from the guns stopped and the arguments from the women started again.

Commandos took the short breather to check their weapons and to do a head count of those that survived the latest exchange. Their medical officer took an evaluation, and noted that only one of their own was slightly injured in the left arm from a glancing shot.

The droid army lost 1,327 units.

But what really got the officer’s attention was the continuous bickering between the two females that led the charge against the droids. He kept his distance from them, but could see plenty from where he stood: finger-pointing, furrowed brows, hands on hips as one yelled at another. Pity the poor person who has to get between them.

“And killing innocents to get what you need to accomplish is justifiable?!?”, Jan shouted, as if an increase in volume would rattle Mara.

“You weren’t there, so don’t push me, poodah! I was following orders because it was my duty, mercenary!”

“When we get out of this mess, you keep the hell away from Kyle and me.”

“If it wasn’t for me, Kyle would’ve gone to the dark side a long time ago.”

“If you weren’t there,” said Jan, “he wouldn’t have gone in the first place!”

If eyes could actually shoot out vibroblades, the ones from Mara’s seething eyes would have pierced Jan’s skull tenfold. Mara’s hands clenched and shook as the arguments got more heated, and her hand got closer to her lightsaber.

“Ladies,” interrupted Ro, “if you two ladies are done kissing, we’ve got company!” Everyone looked up at the two upper levels to see a collection of Grapple Droids, standing in wait.

Slightly larger in size and mass, the grapple droids were based on the outdated Seperatist’s super battle droids. Electrically charged industrial pinchers, designed more for heavy lifting than combat, protruded on the outside of their arms. Where hands were normally located, in its place were tandem-firing mini-cannons.

“Looks like we’re in for a scrap,” uttered Mara under her breath as her lightsaber ignited.

“Just breathe.”

Luke and Callista sat crossed-legged with Aqinos, this time in the center of the stone temple that he and the so-called “Iron Knights” have called home since the Jedi Purge.

Luke glanced up to see the Knights approaching towards the small group. Juggernaut war droids, FLTCH series droids and a couple of Uulshos Justice droids encircled the humans, and synchronistically looked up to the lights that shone down from the ceiling. The crystals within them, each one with its own unique color, started to glow brighter by the minute.

“The crystals that you see within the droids, Master Skywalker, are a sentient race known as the Shards. As we bond with the Force, you will know them intimately, as if they were your own students since Day One.”

Luke’s eyes closed, his hands outstretched, with his left hand holding Callista’s. The darkness is instantaneously replaced with fluid motion, of amber colors and intangible textures. Stalactites grew down above his head, threatening to engulf him but never seeming to reach him.

“What does this place remind you of?” said a voice of smoke and silver behind him. He turned and saw Callista, her gorgeous malt brown hair in a ponytail, dressed in a black and grey jumpsuit with mining gear. He looked down and saw that he wore the same as well.

“Mimban. We’re in the underground caves. Leia and I were looking for a passageway to get back up to the surface.”

His hand reached down and flicked the dark water, cold as the memory it brought back. “What waited for us was... my father. My first confrontation with him, and the last time I used the Kaiburr crystal. Leia and I nearly lost our lives that night.” They leaned against each other as the lily pad-like raft took them to dry ground. Luke helped Callista out, and they slowly made their way up the rocky path.

Near the entrance of the tunnel, Aqinos waited for them. “Before we ascend further, I have a challenge for you both. Stretch out with your feelings, and tell me what lies beyond the egress.”

Soft light peeked out of the exit to the cavern, which seemed to burn away the illusion of darkness behind them. Callista closed her eyes, as well as Luke, and reached out with the Force.

“I sense...,” started Luke, “people. Standing in wait.”

“Blood and energy,” chimed Callista. “But that can’t be right,” said Luke, “mechanics are not attuned with the Force.”

“Walk out and see, Skywalker,” spoke the elderly Sunesi Jedi, “and another path of the Force will open up to you.”

Luke and Callista came outside, into the airy, desolate land decorated in rubble and boulders. Over twenty illumines of colorful energy stood in various places around them. Callista turned to Luke with a soft grin, took his hand, and walked him over to the closest one.

The center of the energy being pulsated a steady crimson, and the closer they got to the source, the more the form took shape... of a Uulshos Justice droid. Luke’s eyes studied the shape, and could see and sense the intricate workings of the droid.

The heart, which was the crystal, and the wires and circuitry that flowed through the body. Gears that spun in sequence, rotors, cogs and Cydex mechaline power supply that provided power to the machine all working in harmony.... and Luke can sense every inch of it.

“So this is what it feels like to him,” said Luke with a smile.

“To who?” asked Callista.

“My nephew, Anakin. He has a knack for fixing mechanical parts, even if he’s seen it for the first time. He must have acute sensitivity in the Force to mechanical things, like we have now.”

Aqinos came up to the couple and gestured to the droid in front of him, “This is my High Marshal, Dragite. Always first in battle, and always there to cover your back.” He then brought them to an emerald crystal, whose form was that of FLTCH droid. “This is my second in command, Luxum. Skillful with a lightsaber, as well as a brilliant tactician. She was crucial in the success of the Jedi bringing peace to the Arkanian Revolution.” Luxum bowed before the two of them.

“We shall take five others with us,” said Aqinos, “which will be more than a match for Lord Mordred. Seven will come with us, and we will put a stop to his rampage.”

Callista looked at Aqinos’ direction, but not at him directly. She muttered under her breath, “Seven will come...”

She fell to her knees, as her hands slammed down against the rough terrain. She looked at her exposed arms, which were those of a 2-1B medical droid. She tried to reach her lightsaber, but the pinchers of her stubby droid hands simply pushed her weapon away further. Her legs were shattered, and strewn across the rocky battlefield.

She looked over to her right, and her eyes went wide. Luke laid there on his back, his body ripped in half. His waist was exposed, and his spine and insides were metallic and plastic. He tried his best to roll over, but to no avail.

Aqinos was merely a head, resting sideways against his own body. The base of his neck shown servos whirring and wires frayed. Callista knew exactly where they were, even though it was merely an illusion in the Force.

Korriban. Again.

And up the incline stood Mordred, resplendent in his Sith armor and surrounded by his own droid army. He sneered at the dismembered group of Jedi, unable to move.

“Come at me if you dare, younglings,” taunted Mordred, “it will only prolong the inevitable.”

“If that’s an invitation, Mordred,” spoke a booming voice in the distance, “we would be foolish to decline.”

Mordred scanned the mist in the distance of the battlefield and made out what looked like seven figures slowly marching towards his direction. Seven beings, which comprised of two females and five males, decorated in traditional Jedi garb, strode with confidence towards Mordred.

Lightsabers in a multitude of colors ignited from the group of newcomers, as they charged towards the Sith and his army.

Callista gasped loudly, as she broke out of the Jedi trance. Several of the Shard Jedi looked down upon her as they helped her up. She looked at Luke, who was visibly shaken as well from the traumatic daydream. Aqinos rubbed his forehead, and nodded in thanks to Luxum who helped bring him to his feet.

“Mordred,” said Callista. “His power is growing.”

Luke got to his feet, his left hand pressed against his temple, “And the longer we stay here, the less time we have.”

“We must make haste, and stop Mordred.” Aqinos brushed some of the dirt off of his robes, and looked towards the entrance. Dala came in with a pair of Shard Jedi, his expression changed from care-free to concern when he saw the group.

He walked up to Callista, and steadied her balance, “Are you guys alright? Looks like you went another round with Dookuu.”

“It’s worse,” replied Callista. “Mordred has increased in strength, and we need to leave now.”

“That we can do,” said Dala as he jerked his thumb back to the pair of Shard by his side, “Thanks to Master Aqinos for loaning me a couple of these droids to help me out with repairs, the Lark is mostly flyable. We’re still short an engine, but I think we can make it.”

Aqinos cleared his throat, “If I may offer a suggestion? I believe I have a flyable ship that can provide us with the means to get us there on time.”

Hot metal shards rained upon the advancing army of droids. Some shatttered from the hail of hot metal, while some shook in place as their armor deteriorated like thin fabric in a Dune Sea sandstorm.

Commandos in groups of threes laid down a repetitive pattern of fire from their Golan Arms FC-1 Flachette weapons. A couple had to drop them when the weapons overheated, and switched over to heavy repeaters. The makeshift barricade of dead heavy loadlifters were slowly being torn apart from the constant shots of the attacking droids.

Mara reached out with the Force, torn the nearest overhead coolant generator out of its support beams, and let it slam down on several of the Grapple droids. Two, however, advanced unscathed by the fallen object, and continued towards her.

Schutta! What does it take to slow them down? She launched herself in the air, and came between the behemoths. Both droids extended their arms out by a few inches, and pink-white arcs of energy lit up the area. Mara swung at both opponents in swift strikes, using the Djem So method.

Tougher than they appear, the droids fended off most of the hits with their sidearms, in which the energy arcs blocked the lightsaber. Focusing her attention too long on the closest droid, the other one backhanded her from behind. A faint glow enveloped her body as she tumbled across the floor as her lightsaber cart-wheeled in the opposite direction. Her short trip ended abruptly when she crashed into a collapsed wall.

Disoriented, she looked up to see where the attackers were, and where her lightsaber went to. Instead of two Grappler droids, her unclear vision caused her to see four. She raised her hand, and tried to muster whatever Force energy she could ---

and both droids wobbled in their stance as they were each hit from behind. Small, electromagnetic pulses coated the outer shells of the machines, and both went down in a smoldering pile of junk. Jan and two commandos stood just behind the decommissioned antagonists, each one holding a DEMP 2 pulse rifle.

Jan walked over to Mara, as the two commandos hoisted her up off the ground and carried her on their shoulders.

Mara wanted to say something, but Jan simply turned away.

The last of the droids toppled to the floor, and the commandos did a quick sweep of the area to make sure the enemy was permanently down. “Looks like these ‘bots are definitely out of the fight,” squawked Ro from a distance, “let’s keep pressing onward. Check your weapons and be ready for anything.”

Degore’s Star Destroyer crept towards the dormant Droid World. Waves of TIE’s orbited the seemingly dead moon as transports and corvettes jumped in from hyperspace to assist in the scuttle party.

Twisted sheets of metal and wires caved in on the left entrance of the bridge, exposing the upper levels above. Bright lights that once illuminated the deck were now brown or burned out.

Klaxon alarms were long since silenced, but the moans of the dying or injured echoed throughout the ship. Techs and repair droids did the best they could to patch up critical areas, before oxygen would start venting out into the vacuum of space.

“Report,” said Degore in a raspy breath. He knew that during one of the more sizable explosions that rocked the ship, he lost his balance and landed in the crew pit. His large frame hit the edge of one of the terminals, and he knew he broke two ribs on impact.

“Power’s down on two-thirds of the ship, and we’re getting by on emergency power. At best, if we try to leave, we can get out of here only at sub-light speeds.”

“What about our fighters?”

“We lost most of them as they tried to cover the gunboats. Our TIE interceptors are still operational.”

Three corvettes approached Droid World at standard speeds, while several Lambda-class shuttles emerged from their hold. Degore spat a stream of blood onto the deck, “Get our boarding party ready to head over there--”, but he never got to finish his sentence.

The exterior of Droid World gave off a flash of blue light on the surface, as massive tectonic plates broke away from the moon and thrusted outward to the surprised Imperial fleet.

Large sections that ejected from the World tore through the group of shuttles, as they winked out of existence. Corvettes blew aparts like Sabbac cards in the wind, and a massive section of the World headed straight towards Degore’s cruiser.

Unflinching, as he saw his end just meters away from the bridge, Degore muttered one last word.

“Mordred.”

The titanic object collided with the Star Destroyer, and both disappeared in a massive explosion. When the last of the dead moon’s hull expectorated into space, a new spheroid stood in its place.

Entrenched in bronze, scoured in droid fighters, gun emplacements and buzz droids, at half the size of its previous incarnation, Droid World was reborn. A single, massive drive lit up the night, and Mordred’s spherical kingdom continued unabated towards Korriban.

The small army of humans ran through a well-lit corridor, aligned in bronze and dull metal. Without warning, a bright blue light temporarily filled the air, followed by a massive quake.

A nearby transparasteel window gave them a perfect view of the renewed onslaught. Jan and Mara watched with pale faces as their would-be rescuers became memories quickly.

“We’re on our own,” said Ro.

Not a slice of emotion in his comment, but Mara could sense the defeat in his spirit.

Here's a little (and I do mean little!) something to wet your whistle: Another chapter!

Chapter Five: Collision

What my Master wished to be done, I did so without question, without remorse, without regret. That is why I was admired and feared, respected and spited.

The commandos crouched down or sat on their supplies as they went over inventory, plans of attack and possible recon. Jan wrapped a bandage around her left hand as she tossed a glance at Mara.

My powers in the Force were in atrophy when he died, and came back when I stumbled upon Skywalker.

Few of the soldiers broke out rations and passed out the military-grade food to the group. Mara grabbed a protien bar and a small thermos of cold coffine, then slouched against the cold, chrome wall.

I’m as good as a smuggler as Karrde was, a Jedi knight, and fine on my own. I don’t have to explain a damn thing to that upstart! How dare she question who I am. Have her walk in my boots for those five years I was in darkness and see how she likes it.

“Mara, here’s your rations. Get ‘em while they’re cold.” The commando slid the small package across the bronze-laden floor. Mara eyed it for a minute after it hit against the heel of her boot, then fumbled with the makeshift foil wrapping.

One of the troops closer to her side leaned in close, “Can you sense their proximity?”

“No. Mechanicals are outside the abilities of a Jedi’s senses. I can feel everyone in this room we are in, but that’s it. There was one person that I heard of that was ‘blessed’ with the ability, but that secret went with him to the grave.”

Built by the Rendili StarDrive corporation well before the Clone Wars started, the dreadnaught cruiser was a challenge to both the enemies that flew against them as well as the crew that had to man them. Half the size of the standard length that it should be and just as deadly, the cruiser blasted its way out of the atmosphere of Dweem and darted past the this asteroid layer that hung near the outer rim of the system.

Dala was like a kid in a confection parlor as he marveled over the decades-old controls that still looked as if the cruiser just rolled out of drydock yesterday. The pilot Pax, slightly shorter than most of the Iron Knights, gingeredly toggled over the controls and balanced the internal gravity to accommodate the organic passengers.

Pax and Dala were inseperable as both beings swapped stories of how they loved to tweak settings beyond the engineer’s original specs.

Somewhere in the center of the ship, several of the Iron Knights sat with Luke and Callista at a round conference holotable. The Sunesi Jedi furrowed his brow, his index gently rubbed his left temple as the holographic layout of their plans expanded in front of his dark eyes.

“A straightforward assault on Mordred is an invitation to suicide, but there are alterantives to this choice.” Aqinos softly touched several crimson buttons, and the holoboard pulled back the image to reveal the location of Korriban and Droid World.

“We’ll swing the cruiser around the circumference of Korriban, come under one of its orbiting moons which will help cloak our presence long enough for us to attempt to sneak in. As we approach Droid World’s blind spot, you Callista and Luke will be accompanied by two Iron Knights in one of our small shuttles.”

“Wait,” said Callista in surprise, “where will you go?”

“To Korriban. To finish something that the Jedi should have taken care of generations ago.”

Luke arched an eyebrow at Aqinos, “And that is?”

“To destroy the tomb of Ragnos, and to quell any chance of the Sith rising again from that planet.”

Late late late, but it's oh-so-worth it!

Chapter Six: Abrupt

“What you ask is the impossible,” said Callista, looking at the wizened Jedi Master before her, “Kyle Katarn and his student Jaden had dealt with the Sith and their attempt at resurrecting Ragnos, and made sure no one could try that stunt again.”

“Even with the Iron Knights on our side, it’ll take weaponry the size of the Death Star to eliminate Korriban from existence,” interjected Luke as he adjusted his boots. “Focusing our strength on destroying the tomb will leave us open for Mordred to take us out easily.”

The Sunesi bowed his head softly, “My apologies to you both; I was not aware that Ragnos will no longer pose a threat to the galaxy. I am now a little more at ease, although -”. The Jedi failed to finish his vocal pondering as the ship lurched suddenly.

The audio-comm crackled as Dala’s strained voice burst through the tinny outputs, “Callista!Luke! Get up here; we’ve been ambushed!”

“We can ambush them- or ‘it’- once we reached the center of this death trap,” spoke one of the commandos, as Mara drew a makeshift map on a sheet of thin metal, and used a vibroblade to carve out the trail of where they’ve been.

“What would we target once we reached the core?”, asked Jan as she knelt by the troops.

“We have some proton charges and a few seismic mines on our persons,” said Ro as he nodded towards a couple of his men sitting across from him on the cold floor, “and if we can locate some critical conduits that feed most of this world, we may cause enough of a slowdown that Mordred will be defenseless long enough.”

Mara held her lightsaber in her left hand, “We get Mordred isolated, which will give me a chance to take him out quickly. Then we can find a way to set this place to self-destruct.”

The clustered group shifted slightly in their spot, as the lights in the area they hid in dimmed briefly, then came back to full luminosity. A nearby transparasteel port gave one of the troops a good view of why Droid World dropped out of hyperspace.

“Sir! The place has jumped in-system.” Mara and the others came over to the viewport.

“Korriban,” Mara uttered under her breath.

The moment the words left her lips, wave after waves of TIE/D fighters and dropships loaded with assault droids made their way planetside. Droid World advanced towards the system until it filled the viewport.

Then, overhead, a filtered voice that sounded like crushed glass in the night echoed throughout the halls. The sound seemed to come from everywhere, and caused the small band of fighters to quickly crouch into defensive stances, weapons drawn towards the vastness of the possessed vessel.

“A valiant effort, trying to find me in my own home,” boomed the voice of Mordred, “but my eyes are everywhere, and the Force is with me. It matters not whether you come to me or I come to you. In the end, death is what will greet you.”

Commander Ro slapped his forehead, “Makes sense. He IS the ship, so of course he’s wired into everything.”

“There’s no safety anywhere we go,” said Jan as she adjusted her grip on her blaster.

“There’s one.”

Half the group looked at Mara.

“The Star Destroyer.”

One of the troops swung his arm in a wide gesture, “Are you mad?!? We barely got out of there with our lives! And now you wanna go back?”

Mara had a spark in her eye, and ignored the interjection from the soldier, “When your crew was leaving the destroyer, do you recall what shape the engines were in?”

Ro furrowed his brow, trying to recollect, “When we abandoned ship, I know that the engineering section wasn’t hit, but the top half of the ship was crumpled from the impact against this-”

“So it’s flyable?”

“Yeah, why?”

Jan finally caught on with Mara’s line of thinking, “You wanna use their ship as a battering ram.”

Mara gave her a quick nod, “Exactly. While Mordred is infused in this place, he doesn’t have the physical ability to use the Force to halt the cruiser from being lodged into his dark heart.”

The squad of troops looked at each other, and one of the soldiers closest to Ro looked at his boss, and nodded in agreement with Mara’s agenda. “Well boss, nobody said we’d live forever.”

Ro looked resigned to the idea, and turned to another trooper, “How long did it take us to get here?”

The officer looked at his chronometer, and compared with a holo-journal, “Eight hours, sir.”

Ro mulled over the options, then said “Let’s find an alternate route back to the ship. I hate long goodbyes.”

The group rose to their feet, and cautiously made their way up another hall. Mara noticed Jan glancing at her.
“What?”

“I know that you’re not the Sithspawn that you once were,” said Jan, “but I’m sure glad you’re one helluva tactician.”

“When you’ve traveled to the places I’ve been, you make best with what you’ve got.”

The group pressed onward into the darkness.

Chapter Seven: Abrupt

“Secondary conduit has ruptured; the hyperdrive is bleeding out into space.” Kril, one of the Iron Knights, spoke to the group in a calm, electronic-filtered voice as sparks showered over his durasteel frame while he adjusted the shields. Dala scrambled furiously with the controls as TIE-D fighters clung to their flight path like banthas following a trail of sweetwater.

“Shields are buckling from the pounding! Think you can ‘Jedi’ something to shake these guys offa us?” strained Dala as he pulled hard on the controls to avoid an oncoming hailstorm of green laserfire.

Callista, Luke and several of the Iron Knights did their best to maintain their balance as they headed towards the few gun turrets the ship came installed with. Aqinos gently laid one hand on Luke’s shoulder.

“If I may offer an alternate solution? Callista, Kalel, come with me. Let’s give our attackers a wave of appreciation.”

As the ship rocked with each successful hit, the group of Jedi reached the center of the vessel.

Aqinos nodded to the Iron Knight next to him. “Kalel is, believe it or not, my most spiritual of the group. She can mentally link into the mind of an attacker and release them of any hostility, to the point of almost purging their spirit of any wrongdoing.”

Callista glanced at Kalel, “She’d have a lifetime job if she sets up a shop in Nal Hutta.”

“Let us concentrate,” spoke Kalel in a voice that sounded vaguely like Mon Mothma, filtered through an ancient synth-voderphone, “reach out with the Force, touch the minds of the pilots.”

Through the calamity of battle, TIE/D fighters angled and arced to avoid the constant barrage of cannon fire from the ancient vessel. Luke focused in on the closest on... and felt nothing.

Droid ships!

We’re deep in Mordred’s territory, echoed Callista in his mind.
Then let us apply our abilities in another way, replied Aqinos.

Dala squirmed as three TIE/D fighters barreled down towards their proximity. The next second, the attackers slammed into each other. The Iron Knights hesitated slightly as their pursuers slowed to a crawl and flew almost parallel to their gun sights.

Seconds later, the only trace of the TIE’s were micro particles of heated metal that quickly cooled in the vacuum of space.

“All I have to say is: what’s your favorite drink, and how many do you want me to buy you?”, Dala quipped as he turned away from the controls.

“I’m not the drinking type,” said Luke as he waved one hand, “besides, I’ll have what she’s having.”

Callista looked at him wryly, “All I need is you.” She smiled as they kissed.

Dala rolled his eyes, “You two need a room. Or a completely separate ship.”

“Jealous?” asked Callista.

Dala did not miss a beat, “Of being single? Not a chance.”

Aqinos adjusted his tattered Jedi cloak, “Very well done, all of you. Jedi--and Sith--always operate in pairs. But the advantage that the Jedi have is that we work as a unified force when the occasion arises.”

Kril swung around suddenly in his pilot chair, “Master Aqinos, I’m tracking multiple--”

The next thing Callista felt was the bulkhead against her lean body, as her world went to black.
