Title: Nearly Zero
Author: Darth_Lex
Timeframe: LOTF
Characters: Jagged Fel, Zekk
Genre: Humor
Summary: Missing scenes from Inferno and Fury

Disclaimer: Lucasfilm owns all the rights to Star Wars. I don’t. No infringement is intended or profit to be made by me.

Legacy of the Force: Fury posted:
“I haven’t done a very good job of making friends. I would rate my success at nearly zero.”

“Zekk looks on you as a friend.”

“Yes. Well, without him, my rate of success would be exactly zero.”

This thread will be a series of missing scenes from LOTF, focusing in particular on the span of days during Inferno when Jag and Zekk stayed behind at the Jedi academy on Ossus while Jaina went to Kashyyyk, and leading into them rejoining her there before the trio’s first “onscreen” appearance at the beginning of Fury.

For the detail-oriented tongue that means these scenes take place after Chapter 14 of Inferno and before Chapter 3 of Fury.

As always, thanks to TKL for the beta. hugs

during Chapter Sixteen of Legacy of the Force: Inferno

Nearly Zero: Part One

Two men strode side-by-side into the hangar. At the far end, near the expansive vista of the Ossus jungle revealed by the open bay doors, Jaina Solo stood at the foot of her Stealth-X’s boarding ladder. Her orange flightsuit blazed in the midday sun; her white helmet was tucked in an elbow. She wasn’t tapping her foot, exactly, but her pose sent much the same message.

They quickened their pace.

“I have a feeling,” Zekk said, “she’s already decided on the plan.”

Casting up a glance, Jag chuckled. “That Force of yours is quite insightful.”

“It really is. You should try it sometime.”

A moment later they reached her. “I’m going to Kashyyyk,” she announced, all business. “I need to tell my uncle what we learned about Alema.”

Jag frowned. “Don’t you think it can wait until after the battle?”

Jaina shook her head. “He has a right to know. And I want him to know. With what’s happening now… Luke needs to know before he does anything stupid.”

“Luke’s the Jedi Grand Master, Jaina,” Zekk said. “He won’t.”

Her eyes distant, Jaina shook her head again. “He’s not himself lately. He hasn’t been since…” She couldn’t say it aloud. “Maybe this can get him to start focusing again.”

“All right,” Zekk said. “Just give me a –”

“No.” Jaina hefted her helmet into her hands. “Stay here and help the apprentices with their training. Until the others arrive, you’re all we’ve got.”

“An excellent plan,” Jag said. “I’ll only need a –”

Jaina cut him off with a raised eyebrow. Her eyes stared daggers: Don’t be an idiot.

“On second thought,” Jag allowed, “perhaps I’ll stay behind as well. The Wampas seem to have become rather accustomed to me.”

“That’s better,” Jaina said, and popped on her helmet.

“What are we going to do about Alema?” Zekk asked.

Jaina scowled for a long moment. “I don’t know. She could be going after Luke next, for all we know.” Then she shrugged. “Kashyyyk first. Once that’s over, and you’ve been relieved here, we’ll figure out how to pick up her trail.”

Her eyes met Jag’s. She wasn’t challenging him, just seeking confirmation he agreed. Which, fortunately, he did. “We’ll catch up as soon as we’re able.”

She nodded once, curtly, and turned for the ladder.

Zekk glanced to Jag, a sly grin on his face. “While you’re away, who’s in charge?”

Jaina turned back over her shoulder. “What?”

Technically we’re still assigned to chasing Alema,” Zekk said, deadpan. “But while we’re supervising the Jedi academy, shouldn’t I really be the one calling the shots?”

Jaina rolled her eyes. “You’re just lucky there’s not a third option.”

Without another word she bounded up the boarding ladder and dropped smoothly into the X-wing’s cockpit. Not waiting for a warning – and not expecting one – Jag and Zekk stepped back behind the yellow safety stripe on the hangar floor. A second later the starfighter’s repulsors fired up, and the Stealth-X rose into flight. It kicked forward, then soared out the open bay doors and disappeared into the bright Ossus sky.

“Well,” Jag said after she was gone, “you tried.”

Zekk sighed deeply. “Yeah.”

“It’s not you. She doesn’t laugh at my jokes, either.”

“Jag, no one laughs at your jokes.”

“The Woodoos do.”

“They don’t know any better. They’re seven.”

“Your words, they wound me. Deep into my soul.”

Zekk glanced down. “This is gonna be just you and me for a while, huh?”

Jag spun on his heel and waved him to follow. “Oh, come on. It’ll be fun.”

Loved this first post! grin You really capture them both so well. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this fic... please let me know when you post more if it's not too much trouble. batting

Oh, someday I hope to exude as much "Don't Mess With Me" attitude as Jaina Solo does. She just stops them all in their tracks, and I love it. Can't wait to read Fury, just too many end of term projects to finish, but I hope she gets some time "on screen". Your portrayal of Jaina is always fantastic, taking the image in profic and filling it out a bit, but I really wish we got to see the authors use her more in LotF as well, you know?

Wonderful stuff! grin

Nearly Zero

I like the name (now that I get it silly , but then again half the fun is trying to see how obtuse we can be about titles. I relinquish the lead on our friendly competition to you. peace )

Casting up a glance, Jag chuckled. “That Force of yours is quite insightful.”

“It really is. You should try it sometime.”

The potential for great Jag/Zekk banter is limitless. Off to a great start here. Can't wait to see more to come in future viggies.

Jaina cut him off with a raised eyebrow. Her eyes stared daggers: Don’t be an idiot.

Women only call their main man names like idiot. I guess we know where you stand on the great Zekk versus Jag debate.

“On second thought,” Jag allowed, “perhaps I’ll stay behind as well. The Wampas seem to have become rather accustomed to me.”

Can you write a scene with Jag taking over the Woodoo duty? laugh

“Well,” Jag said after she was gone, “you tried.”

Zekk sighed deeply. “Yeah.”

“It’s not you. She doesn’t laugh at my jokes, either.”

“Jag, no one laughs at your jokes.”

“The Woodoos do.”

“They don’t know any better. They’re seven.”

“Your words, they wound me. Deep into my soul.”

This whole exchange says so much with so little. It's just simple dialogue but the depth is incredible. Both men want the same thing for Jaina, and can't find a way to give it to her, even though they've conceded living amicably with the rival for the love of their life's affection.

Things just reads like it could fit into canon.

I think the best thing to come out of LotF (so far) has to be the great fic's were getting featuring Zekk and Jag.

You really have a great sense of the tension between the two of them, and between each of them and Jaina. I really loved the comment about Jag and the Woodoos.

I'm with TKL, this fits perfectly into canon. And I can't wait to see Jag and his kids.

Looking forward to more, and soon. applause

I absolutely loved this...

I agree with padawanlost, the Zekk and Jag stories that came out of LotF have been great, and this one is one of the best. I can't wait to read the rest of the vigs in this. You have a talent of picking up and filling us in with the missing canon and this definitely could fit right in there.

I can't wait for the next one. I know you usually have a posting schedule, but if this one isn't posted regularly, may I have a PM when you update.

TheOnlyJediPrincess: Glad you liked it. happy

Jedi-Ant: Loved this first post! You really capture them both so well.
Two early-thirties guys gratuitously tormenting each other. I know whereof I speak. tongue

_Tenel_Ka_ : Laughing out loud, choking on water moment. I love their banter.
Thanks! grin Jag and Zekk have had some really great lines in Exile, Inferno, and Fury. Hopefully I can keep that feel in these viggies.

Oh, someday I hope to exude as much "Don't Mess With Me" attitude as Jaina Solo does.
Few women do. silly But the one who do… hypnotized love drooling

I really wish we got to see the authors use her more in LotF as well, you know?
I think you’ll like Fury, then. wink

Dana-Skywalker: They can be quite entertaining together.
To everyone except Jaina, apparently. doh! tongue

Hananiah: I think it would be nice for the boys to get on without Jaina in the mix because I think they could be really good friends.
So far as I can tell, there’s only been a handful of days in the whole LOTF series when Jag and Zekk have been working together without Jaina there: a few days in Sacrifice when Jaina goes to be with Luke on Hapes, and the few days at the end of Inferno when these viggies are set. Too bad, though. This J/Z has a lot of potential. cool

TKL: As always, you're welcome.
hugs

I relinquish the lead on our friendly competition to you.
For now. tongue

The potential for great Jag/Zekk banter is limitless.
It really is. Those two are such crackpots! laugh Especially the way Aaron writes them. grin

I guess we know where you stand on the great Zekk versus Jag debate.
Is it that obvious? silly

Can you write a scene with Jag taking over the Woodoo duty?
thinking

Both men want the same thing for Jaina
They both want the same thing from Jaina too – but that’s a different fic. laugh

even though they've conceded living amicably with the rival for the love of their life's affection.
I know! What else does the girl want from them? angry shame_on_you not_talking

padawanlost: You really have a great sense of the tension between the two of them, and between each of them and Jaina.
All that testosterone flying around, someone’s bound to get caught in the crossfire. laugh

I'm with TKL, this fits perfectly into canon.
Thanks! grin

Mira_Jade: So far Jag and Zekk has been my favorite part of LoTF
I have to admit, I have a soft spot for the Love Commander. laugh But besides that, Jag and Zekk are stealing the show. (Especially Jag. cool )

Flowerlady: You have a talent of picking up and filling us in with the missing canon and this definitely could fit right in there.
Thanks! cool As much I enjoy writing AUs, the missing scenes from canon are really a lot of fun to write. Keeping the plotlines and characterizations consistent with the profic is a real challenge – much harder than keeping consistency with yourself in an AU. tongue But that’s what makes the missing scenes so much fun. dancing

Thanks for your replies, everyone. happy I should have the next post up in a day or two. wink

during Chapter Sixteen of Legacy of the Force: Inferno

Part Two

From his perch atop an upturned storage crate, Jag watched the Wampas practicing their hand-to-hand combat skills in pairs. The teenagers seemed to be enjoying the exercises more than before, but the consensus still was that it was a lot less fun than lightsaber training. Especially now that they actually had their lightsabers to train with, thanks to the end of the GAG’s “protection” of the academy.

Too bad they didn’t appreciate the marked improvement when they’d had no other choice but to work on unarmed fighting techniques.

His eyes drifted to a human girl throwing a series of punches at a much taller boy. Despite her disadvantage in height and reach, she was more than holding her own. In fact, she was just about to –

“Stop!” Jag called out to the pair. Waving his hands, he catapulted off the crate and strode briskly on a straight line toward them. “Tela, Korr, stop!”

The two young Jedi abruptly ended their bout, and stood looking at him with hands hanging limply at their sides. The other Wampas paused momentarily too, but a mere raised brow from Jag sent them right back into their own frenetic matches.

“What did we do wrong?” Tela asked when he arrived.

“Not so much wrong, as…” Jag frowned, thinking. “Let me show you.” He motioned with his hands. “Go back to how you were a second ago.”

The apprentices faced each other and raised their hands. Tela moved in for another punch, in slow-motion. “Like this?”

“No, before that.” Jag mimicked with his own fists. “You were going at him like this. Do it again – slowly.”

“Okay.” Tela started the series of punches, driving Korr off balance in his defenses.

“Right… there,” Jag said, freezing them in place. “You see?”

The two Jedi appraised their respective hands. “Uh,” Korr finally said, “not really.”

Jag chuckled. “A point for your honesty.” He pointed down. “Tela, your left foot.”

“Yeah,” she replied, as if to say, Yes, we learned left from right a while ago, thanks.

“If you kicked him now, where would you hit?”

An instant later, Tela’s face was flushing and Korr was wincing. She looked in every direction but their faces. “I should hit him in the… um…”

“Indeed.” Jag crossed his arms over his chest. “Ending the fight.”

Korr laughed. “You think?”

Despite himself, Jag smiled at the boy, then looked to Tela again. “So. Why didn’t you land it?”

“I… I didn’t…”

“You saw it, though. You saw it was open?”

“Yeah, I did.” She met his gaze, barely. “But it’s… it’s just practice.”

Jag shook his head. “That’s no excuse. There’s no point to practice if you’re not treating it like the real thing. If you don’t train yourself to land a debilitating strike now, you won’t be ready to land one when it really counts.” He turned to Korr again. “Why’d you leave it open?”

Korr dipped his head. “I, uh… I didn’t realize I was.”

“Well, then,” Jag said, smiling broadly, “you’ve both learned a valuable lesson today. And that’s a very good thing.”

The teenagers nodded. When he didn’t say anything further, and they realized no more chastisements were coming, the teenagers’ faces brightened a little. “Let’s try that again,” Korr said. “And this time I’m not gonna leave you that shot.”

“You’d better not,” Tela said menacingly, “because next time I’ll take it.”

Jag chuckled and turned away. “I’ll let you get to that, then.”

He paced back to his crate and sat down. While he watched the rest of the sparring, he contemplated Tela’s decision. Was it a conscious choice? Or was she just accustomed to not looking for such dirty, below-the-belt tactics? The former he could understand. The latter, though, would be more troubling. And he really couldn’t tell which it was.

There was only one way to find out.

A short time later he called the practice session to a close and sent the Wampas back to their dormitories to clean up before dinner. Then, setting a brisk clip, he walked through the maze of buildings until he reached the open space where Zekk was finishing up a lightsaber training session with the Rontos. He observed from the side until Zekk’s group scampered away, their lessons concluded, too.

Jag strode toward Zekk. “Don’t leave just yet. I need to run an experiment.”

Turning, the taller man raised a brow. “On me?”

“Yes.”

“Can I refuse?”

“No.”

“Well, that’s not very nice.”

“Perhaps so,” Jag said, stopping just in front of him. “But I never claimed to be a nice guy.”

“You’ve got me th–” Zekk bobbed suddenly, narrowly avoiding Jag’s first punch. His left hand flew upward, knocking aside Jag’s next strike, too. “You didn’t say it was a fighting experiment.”

“I know,” Jag replied, his voice eerily calm as he threw another series of three swift punches. “You might have refused.”

Zekk growled an inaudible reply, then counterpunched. Jag ducked. He drove his fists higher, toward Zekk’s shoulder. The taller man took a step, retreating… Suddenly, without warning, Jag kicked out with his right foot –

With reflexes only the Force could provide, Zekk sprang back just in it time to avoid a boot to the groin. “What,” Zekk exclaimed, “the hell?”

Jag bowed ceremonially and held his open palms wide. “I thank you.”

Zekk glared. “I take it your experiment was a success.”

“It was.”

The glare was unabated. “I think you’d better explain.”

“I will.”

Zekk waited. When Jag said nothing further, he canted his head. “When?”

“Eventually.”

When, eventually?”

Jag only tipped his head, spun on his heel, and marched in the direction of the Wampa’s dormitory. Zekk had made the same error as Korr – but years of experience had taught Zekk better than to expect his foe not to land such a kick. At least, any usual foe. But Zekk had become so accustomed to training with Jaina he’d forgotten to guard himself.

And it certainly wasn’t because Jaina had any qualms about trying that kick, even on a friend. She’d never hesitated to kick at him there, in all their countless sparring matches years ago. No, it wasn’t out of friendship or concern for Zekk. It was something else.

Jaina was training as hard as she’d ever trained in her life. Yet even as she did, she was losing her edge. His Jaina would never have made that mistake.

Jag just had to find a way to get her to see it.

Yay missing scenes! grin

The banter in the first one was great. And in the second one I was wondering if you were making allusions to Jaina's training with Jag's observation of the Wampas... and you were! It's a great and believable backup for his later LOTF action/speech.

My favorite part though? The little stab at the end about his Jaina.

I'm excited about this series, Lex.
