Zekk, orphan of a doomed planet, gifted with abilities beyond those of normal GFFA beings...

Come on. Tell me that's not from DC or Marvel. wink

Here, I 'tweak' Zekk's story a bit, injecting some good-old superheroness into his life. For better... or worse.

If you want PMs, please let me know!!!!!!!!!!!

Chapter one: Weapon S
“What are you doing?” Zekk cried out, struggling against the grip of the stormtroopers. The crazy-eyed woman approaching added to his panic. “No, no! Get away from me!”

“He’s surly,” she said. “Oh, let’s just stun him. I’m sure Garowyn here will have loads of fun with him.” Her arm swept to the side, indicating a petite young woman in lizard-skin armor, with piercing hazel eyes that washed over Zekk like a scientist observing a lab specimen.

Panic swelled in Zekk as the stormtroopers raised their weapons, his edginess abating only slightly as he noted them setting them to stun. Blue arcs of electricity shot from their barrels… and oblivion swept over him, condemning him to darkness.

Shadow Academy, Coruscant orbit
Dark Jedi Brakiss walked around the glassine cylinder, his eyes never leaving the floating occupant. “Impressive,” he muttered to the only other conscious person in the room. “He’ll be the perfect weapon, you say?” he asked, stopping and turning around.

Garowyn looked up from a datapad she held in her right hand. “Yes,” she said. “This boy is strong in the Force, and my modifications will turn him into the ultimate anti-Jedi soldier.” She rapped the cylinder at around the midpoint. “This little street urchin will carve through Skywalker’s brats like a lightsaber through wood.”

Brakiss turned his eyes back to the young man suspended inside the cylinder, a breathe mask over his pale face and his long, black hair floating in the bacta. He noted tubes trailing from his arms, legs and torso, gleaming and oily in the dim light. “Quantum armor infusion?”

The Nightsister nodded. “Bonded to his bone, a monomolecular level.” She pointed to a pair of goggles over his closed eyes. “Coupled with the permanent healing trance we’re inducing in him and the dozens of martial arts we‘re flash-teaching him, he’ll be nigh-unstoppable.” A sigh escaped her lips. “We’re suppressing his memories, but can’t erase them fully. The next generation should be more pliable then this one.”

Brakiss pointed to gloves covering his hands. “And how are the new weapons being implanted? Claws have a shorter range than lightsabers, after all.”

Garowyn nodded. “Yes, but the claws have the element of surprise. And they’re coated by the quantum armor as well. He’ll be able to use them like they use their own lightsabers. And I’ve got more modifications ready for him.”

Brakiss nodded, his thoughts turning away from the project. “Very well, Garowyn. Keep me informed.” And with that, he walked out, silvery robes swishing about.

The Nightsister looked over the cylinder again and its occupant. She made some more notes before walking off, fantasies of dead Jedi and burning worlds in her mind.
*****
Brakiss shot up out of bed, sweat plastering his blond hair to his brow. He quickly dressed and retrieved his lightsaber, panic crawling up his spine. He exited the room about two seconds before alarm klaxons blared and emergency lighting switched on, bathing the corridors in an eerie red light.

A pair of stormtroopers ran by, blaster rifles at the ready. “What’s going on?” Brakiss shouted after them. “Has the New Republic found us?”

One of the stormtroopers stopped and turned, hand tapping his skull-like helmet. “Trouble in Garowyn’s lab, sir. There’s been a breakout of one of her subjects.” He turned and ran off, Brakiss following behind. He ignited his lightsaber, sending forth a pulsing red plasma blade and holding it at the ready.

A cloying stench reached his nostrils before he even reached Garowyn’s lab. He reached out with the Force and felt… fury. Pure, animal fury. The pair of stormtroopers raised their blasters even as an emergency bulkhead slid into place. Muffled thuds could be heard on the other side, growing in volume with every second…

A section of the bulkhead suddenly bulged in. Slight at first, but growing with every second. It quickly tore in three places, thin spikes sticking out of the holes. Brakiss stepped back as a human fist punched through the weakened durasteel. A second hand slipped through the gap and the two hands pushed on the hole, widening it and tearing apart the door like it was paper.

“Shoot!” Brakiss screamed at the stormtroopers.

The two white-armored soldiers raised their blaster rifles and fired, even as a black-haired human male ran through the hole, dodging to the side and avoiding the plasma bolts. They readjusted their aim, but were seconds too slow as the male seemed to flicker, appearing right in front of them with claws extended from his knuckles. He stabbed right through their plasteel armor-and the flesh beneath.

Brakiss held out his left hand and concentrated, bringing the full power of the Dark Side of the Force to bear. In the second it took him to concentrate and bring forth Sith Lightning, Garowyn’s failed experiment shoved aside the stormtrooper corpses and rushed him, claws flashing and eyes ablaze with fury.

The Dark Jedi brought up his blade to deflect the claws, the dark lightning dissipating as quickly as it was summoned. The male slid the claws down the length of the blade, easily clipping off the emitter handle with a flick of his writs.

Brakiss dropped the sparking and smoking emitter handle and disengaged from the berserker, shuffling back. “Stop!” he shouted, even as more stormtroopers arrived. “You are not-” His tirade was cut off as the male stepped forward, ducking a hasty slash and kicking Brakiss in the abdomen.

The stormtroopers readied their weapons, but could not shoot with Brakiss right in front of the man. Sensing their need, the Dark Jedi leapt back, somersaulting out of their line of fire.

Wild green eyes darted about before he raised his right arm and punched the wall. Claws sprang from his knuckles at impact, slicing through power conduits and sending out a shower of sparks from the puncture points. The lights flickered and died, sending the corridor into darkness.

Emergency lighting winked on two second later, revealing a half-dozen dead stormtroopers littering the corridor. Brakiss’ eye twitched at the carnage. He raised his hands once more, summoning Sith Lightning. “Die!” he screamed, sending forth a stream of bluish-white bolts at the male. They enveloped his bare torso, sending him into the wall as his muscles spasmed.

A sneer crossed Brakiss’ lips, but it turned into a frown as the male stood back up. “Wait a moment. You can’t do-” His final words were reduced to a gurgle as the male rushed him, stabbing the claws through his chest. Blood streamed from Brakiss’ mouth and his blue eyes turned glassy before he slid to the deck plating.

The failed experiment retracted his claws before marching on, bare feet slapping against the cold durasteel…

Ten Years Later
“Come on, Jaina! It’s getting late and I miss Tenel Ka!”

Jaina Solo turned to her slightly-younger brother, brown eyes glaring. “Listen, Jasa. I just need a quick drink before heading back to Mom and Dad’s apartment, all right? And you can go back to the Hapan consulate with your wife, but not until I have a glass of Whyren’s, okay?”

Jacen Solo’s lips pursed as he and his sister walked up to a gaudy night club, the Outlander. Neon signs and holograms promising entertainment danced along the entrance, dazzling his eyes and forcing him to shade them. “He won’t be in there,” he stated.

Jaina whipped around, long brown hair flowing behind her. She stepped forward, looking up at her brother. “I know! It’s been ten years, Jacen. I know Zekk’s gone.” She thumped her chest. “Now all I need is a drink, okay? Not a lecture from the guy who met his soul mate the first day at the Academy.” And with that, she turned back and marched into the club.

Her younger brother sighed before following.

Inside, Jaina sidled up to the bar. “A shot of Whyren’s,” she ordered from the Twi’lek bartender. While the blue-skinned barkeep turned and filled her glass from an old-fashioned tap, the Jedi Knight reached out with her senses, scanning for trouble. She nodded as a glass of brown liquid was placed in front of her. She took a sip of it, but nearly choked when someone caught her attention…

He was taller, not as pale as she remembered, but the eyes were unmistakable. More haunted than before, but still the same shade of green. And his black hair was still tied in a ponytail too. Jaina set down her drink and walked over to him, each step feeling as if she had lead weights tied to her boots. “Excuse me,” she asked when in earshot over the din of the techno-dance music. “Is your name Zekk?”

The man turned to her, mouth set in stone. Jaina stepped back as she felt an aura of hostility around him. Her hand reflexively brushed her lightsaber as he regarded him. “Never mind, sorry,” she muttered, before walking away.

She paid for her drink before passing Jacen on her way out. “Sorry about that, Jacen,” she whispered. “Tell Tenel Ka I said hi, all right?”

He nodded and kissed her on the cheek before walking off. Jaina sighed and lingered while people streamed around her, humans and aliens alike. She tapped her toe on the duracrete sidewalk, an odd feeling creeping up her spine…

She looked back and saw the Zekk look-alike duck into an alley, right behind a human woman. She snarled, her lightsaber springing to her hand. She ran to the alley, speed increasing with every step. “Hold it right there!” she shouted, igniting the violet plasma blade…

And skidding to a stop as the look-alike stood in front of the woman, claws extended from his knuckles and fending off several armed thugs.

The look-alike kicked a Rodian in the gut, doubling him over before slashing at the face of a Gamorrean. “Get away!” he yelled, jumping over the wounded porcine and ramming his weapons into the gut of a scruffy-looking human. He saw Jaina with her lightsaber and paused for a moment before turning back to the remaining thugs.

The five thugs saw the lightsaber and courage quickly fled them seconds before they ducked into a side door. Jaina and the look-alike ran to it, but it slid shut. “Forget it,” she said. The Jedi turned to the woman. “Are you all right?”

The terrified bystander mutely nodded before running off, skin almost translucent. Jaina sighed before turning to the mystery man-and finding three claws pointing at her face.

Jaina kept perfectly still as her eyes tracked up, meeting his gaze. “I don’t want to hurt you,” she said, projecting calm through the Force. She deactivated her lightsaber and held out her arms. “That was a brave thing you did.”

He sniffed the air twice before lowering his claws. “You smell… familiar,” he finally stated, his head cocking to the side. “Do I know you? Do you know me?”

Jaina shook her head. “Yes! You’re Zekk of Ennth, an old friend! Force, where have you been?” she cried out. She clipped her lightsaber to her belt before patting Zekk on the arms. “I missed you.”

Zekk breathed out before turning from her. “Ten years, you say? That’s as far back as I remember.” A derisive chuckle escaped his lips. He knocked on his head twice. “Before that is a blur… except for you.” He turned back and walked up to her. “What’s your name?”

“Jaina Solo,” she said, a half-smile on her lips. Jaina held out her hand. “I can help you, Zekk, if you’ll let me.”

The older man hesitated before raising his hand and placing it in hers. “All right… Jaina.”

An interesting idea. I personally thought you were going to do SPiderman or Batman since those characters were also orphans and Batman is nicknamed the "Dark Knight" (like the title Brakiss gave him of "Darkest Knight"). WEll, I'm interested to see where this goes, as you always come out with great crossovers. I suggest throwing in some non- Star Wars characters too such as the Thing or even Venom (or any other symbiote wearing character). Just be sure to balance out the cast of superheros with non-Force sensitive characters so that the strengths and weaknesses of each character has some varaity.

SSM12-Sorta. Looks like I'll be continuing this series first before moving on.

Zeb-Thanks. Yeah, it made sense to me for that to be the only thing-at first.

Ceillean-Thanks. And added.

iamobiwan-LOL, just think of it less a crossover and more a blending. wink And added.

Stooky-They'll come later. Right now, popular demand says I stick with Wolvie.

Here we go!

*****
Chapter Two: Relearning the Past
Jaina glanced back at Zekk every few minutes, making sure he wouldn’t disappear on her. Zekk, for his part, kept one hand clasped with hers and the other one at his side, fingers twitching and eyes glancing about.

“It’s all right,” she said to him when she looked back. “No one’s gonna hurt you here. Don’t you remember coming here before?”

Zekk’s head shook, his ponytail jerking back and forth. “I’ve learned to be cautious in any situation. Any being around me might be an enemy, in league with the ones who erased my memories and turned me into… this.” He held up his arms and looked them over, his lips curling almost in disgust.

Jaina stopped just shy of her parent’s apartment and turned back to him. She locked eyes with him as she spoke. “You’re still Zekk of Ennth. Nothing that was done to you can change who you are. You’re still a decent man, no matter what.” Her eyes flashed as she projected an aura of confidence in her words through the Force. “Do you understand?”

At his short nod, she smirked. “Good, and don’t you forget it.” She paused and smacked her forehead at her faux pas. “Damn, sorry!” She pivoted on her heel and pulled on his arm, dragging Zekk up to the front door of Han and Leia Solo’s apartment building in Column Commons.

The door slid open as she approached and she walked in, quickly locating both her father and mother. “Ah… I’ll go tell them you’re-” She stopped as Leia and Han walked in from a door near the back of the main living area. “Oh! Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad.”

Han Solo nodded at her, his eyes focused on Zekk. His hands hung causally by his sides-right next to the DL-44 blaster pistol in its holster. “Hello, Jaina. And who’s your friend, here?”

Jaina swallowed and held her hand out, motioning to Zekk. “This is… remember Zekk from ten years ago? The one who lived with Peckhum and-oh, Peckhum!” She closed her eyes and slapped her forehead in frustration. “He’s missed you so much! We’ve gotta tell him about you!”

Zekk looked down at her, his green eyes betraying confusion. “Peckhum? Who’s-”

“You’re a good kid, Zekk. I’m glad I met you back when you stowed away on the Lightning Rod way back when.”

Zekk’s eyes blinked rapidly and he clutched his forehead. “I… I know that name!” he cried out. “Peckhum and… the Lightning Rod?” He looked around, breathing rapidly. “Who is he?”

Leia walked forward and held out her hand. “Jaina, what’s wrong with him?” She met Zekk’s gaze. “Zekk, right?” At his uncertain nod, she continued. “You’ve been missing for ten years. What’s your earliest memory?”

Uncertainty played on Zekk’s face. I-I was floating in a cylinder, in bacta. I was scared and didn’t know where I was or even who I was.” He turned from the three and paced a bit in the front atrium. “I punched the cylinder a few times, cracking it before my claws extended.” Zekk held his right arm up and his quantum armor claws extended slightly from his knuckles. “I sliced through the transparisteel and killed some freaky lady who was in the lab with me.”

“Freaky lady?” Jaina asked.

Zekk shrugged. “I think she was the one who worked on me. I then killed a bunch of stormtroopers and some guy in silvery robes before making my way to a hangar near the front of the ship.” His green eyes closed and he stopped in his pacing. “I commandeered a fighter and flew around a bit before landing,” he turned and pointed over Han’s shoulder, “there, about two kilometers on some rundown landing pad.”

Leia snapped her fingers. “Wait, that had to be the Shadow Academy! I remember we found it when its cloaking device failed and it appeared, a derelict. The surviving imperials apparently abandoned it, but we never found out what happened to those aboard. Ackbar was quite disturbed at an imperial facility so close to Coruscant and never finding out about it.”

She looked to her husband. “Any chance you can use your connections in the Defense Force and find out what they did with that thing?”

Han rubbed his chin. “I can contact Wedge and see if he can put a word in with Fleet Assessment and Tracking. Might take a bit, though.” He flashed Zekk an empathic smile. “I know what it’s like to have a hole in your past, kid. Sorry.”

Zekk met his gaze and nodded once. “Yes, you do.” He turned to Jaina. “Listen… thanks. I appreciate what you’re doing for me.”

Jaina smiled and patted him on the forearm. “You’re a friend, Zekk. And I... Missed you.” She swallowed, trying to organize her thoughts but failing miserably.

He nodded, sensing her distraught. The young man walked up to Leia. “I can give you my holo-comm number so when you find anything out, you can contact me.” He turned to leave, but stopped as Leia grabbed his arm. Genetically-programmed reflexes kicked in, causing him to shrug off her grip, roll to the side and stop in a crouch, claws extended.

Leia’s calm demeanor never wavered even as Han quick-drew his trusty old DL-44 blaster. “Put it away, honey,” she said, holding out her hands to her side. “Zekk, calm down. I was simply going to offer to let you stay here, but if you’d rather not…”

Zekk slowly stood up, his claws retracting and his mien relaxing. “I’m sorry,” he half-whispered. “I try not to do that, but it just… kicks in.” He closed his eyes and his head hung low. “I will have to decline your invitation, at least for now.” He turned to the door, but spared a glance at Jaina before walking to the threshold.

Leia cleared her throat. “Your holo-comm number, at least?” She pulled out a datapad from her jacket pocket and floated it over to him. He fiddled with it before tossing it to her, the slim case landing in her hand. “You’re welcome to come back anytime, Zekk.”

He paused as the door slid open and glanced over his shoulder, making sure his gaze lingered on Jaina for two heartbeats. “Thank you, Leia. I’ll remember that.” And with those final words, he exited the Solo residence.

Han’s brow furrowed and he placed his hands on his hips. “I can’t believe this. Seriously, it’s… really odd Zekk showing up like this.” He noted Jaina’s lingering gaze on the door. “Sweetheart, you all right?” He walked over to her, a sympathetic expression on his face.

Jaina’s head snapped around to him. “Huh? Oh… I’m fine.” She plastered a smile on her face and set up light shields around her roiling emotions. “This will just take… time to adjust to.” Stay safe, Zekk. I don’t want to lose you again. I can’t lose you again.

OMG that's so sad. It makes me feel really badly for wolverine too! To live with knowing your whole past was stolen and then you have this metal in you! UGH!

I'm glad you wrote Leia and Han as sympathetic, sometimes they don't come across that way in profic. Zekk needs the support of friends.

I'm assuming we can expect a showing from Peckhum coming up? I hope so.

Also, the Shadow Academy still exists? Of course it would have to since this bares a similarity to X-men!

Cool!

SSM12-Well, it physically exists. As a functioning facility... is another story.

iamobiwan-Yeah, pretty tragic, there. And yeah, Han and Leia can be too cruel in fan and profic. And you assume correctly.

Sorry about the delay. Muses have been on strike, almost. sad

This chapter's a little... intense. You have been warned. SAnd thanks to Darthishtar for helping me settle on Vilas' new name! grin

Here we go!

*****
Kre’fey’s holo-image wavered slightly, but there was no disguising his surprise at Han’s request. “The Shadow Academy? That old piece of junk?” His white fur rippled as his right shoulder and arm bobbed a bit out of the image’s display field. “It’s in orbit of one of Coruscant’s moons… Centax III, it looks like.”

Han suppressed a modicum of impatience. “And… anything else you can tell me about it, Traest?” he asked, waving his hand a bit. “It’s for my daughter and a friend of hers.”

Traest snorted, his nostrils flaring. “Ah, Daddy’s little girl?” He held up his left hand and waved a finger at Han. “I understand, old friend. I’m the same way with my own children.” He glanced to the side. “Hmm… the Remnant vehemently denied any knowledge of the station, and the Deep Core Warlords were mum when we ‘inquired’ about it. Truth be told, the Diversity Alliance and Black Sun resurgence hit us a few months later, so we paid it little mind.”

Han nodded. “Yeah, so what about now? Things have been pretty peaceful, lately. I’m sure you can spare a team for a little expedition.” he winked at Kre’fey, also flashing him a trademark Solo half-smile. “In all seriousness, it would be a good idea to put that particular ghost to rest, considering what happened to Zekk in there.”

The Bothan nodded, holding his hands up to his snout. “I read your report on that, yes. How barbaric of them!” His fur rippled like waves. “I’ll send out a team as soon as possible, within two days if not sooner.” His image winked out as the connection was cut.

Ten minutes later, Han found his daughter in the kitchen, talking with Leia. “Good news,” he said, planting a kiss on Jaina’s forehead before sitting down. “Traest is gonna send a team out in two days to check out the Shadow Academy. Looks like Zekk can get some answers to his questions.”

A dazzling grin crossed Jaina’s mouth. She leaned over and kissed Han on the cheek. “Thanks, Dad.” She wolfed down her breakfast and got up, knocking her chair back. “I was going over to his house anyway with Peckhum. This’ll really make his day!” She slung a knapsack over her left shoulder before dashing out the front door.

Leia smiled while nursing her tea. “You’re a good man, Han,” she said, taking a sip. “How far back did you have to twist Traest’s arm, anyway?”

Han leaned back and put his hands behind his head. “Let’s say he won’t be able to drink Whyren’s for a while,” he said, smirking.
*****
Twenty minutes later
Jaina walked down a dingy, grunge-filled corridor, her nose buried in a datapad and her Force awareness in high. “It’s… this way,” she stated, pointing down the hall to a door on the right. She looked up and turned to an old man behind her. “Excited? Nervous?”

Peckhum ran his hands over his pants and straightened his shirt collar a bit.. “I wouldn’t say nervous… but anxious a bit.” He sighed, and walked up to the door. “it’s been so long. Zekk was the closest I’ve ever had to a son, you know.” he held up his hand to the door control, but it slid open before his gloved hand could touch the panel. “Zekk!”

The younger man stood inside the door jamb, clad in a simple T-shirt and slacks. His feet were bare and hair unkempt and an aura of menace permeated the air around him. Both hands were clenched and his eyes darted from Peckhum, to Jaina and then to the hallway outside. “Peckhum…” he muttered, raising his right hand and pointing. “Your name is Peckhum. I remember you.” He looked to Jaina and his gaze lingered a bit longer than before. “You’ve got news.”

Jaina nodded. “Dad convinced General Kre’fey to send a team to the Shadow Academy in two days.” She smiled shyly. “We can finally get some answers… you can get some answers.”

Zekk nodded and stepped back, inviting them in. “Thanks. I just made breakfast, if you’re hungry.”

Jaina and Peckhum stepped into Zekk’s apartment. No pictures hung on the wall, nor was there anything about the main living area beyond a couch, holonet receiver, some chairs and a table. They sat down as Zekk put some instant-heat food containers down in front of them and pulled a tab on the bottom, activating quick-heating chemicals in the bottom that warmed the food. “Not much, sorry. Some nerf sausages, eggs and the like."

Peckhum peeled off the top and sniffed. “I’ve eaten a lot worse, Zekk. Thanks.” He took a few bites, savoring the food. “So… what have you been up to, these ten years? I’ve missed you.”

Zekk speared a piece of sausage with one of his knuckle claws and popped it into his mouth. “I didn’t miss you,” he said after chewing and swallowing. At Peckhum’s shocked expression, he sighed. “I didn’t even remember you until yesterday, Peckhum.

Peckhum waved him off. “It’s all right, Zekk. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose your whole memory, although some of those memories… weren’t the most pleasant.”

Zekk nodded curtly. “I figured, but they’re still my memories.” He jabbed his thumb at his chest. “And I want them back.”

Jaina reached over, not touching his hand, but coming close. “You’ll get them back, Zekk.”
His eyes flickered to her before a small smile crossed his lips, curving them ever slightly upward. “Thanks, Jaina.”
*****
Coruscant orbit
An old-style Lambda-class shuttle flew along, sunlight reflecting off the relatively huge ventral wings and dorsal stabilizer. The shuttle’s course took it on a path to Centax III, the dumping ground for the Coruscant System. Wrecked starships, derelicts and other pieces of flotsam floated in orbit of the moon, including a modified ring-shaped station with ominous towers and spikes.

Lieutenant Rids Tesku flew the shuttle, ignoring an ominous feeling building at the base of his spinal column as the Shadow Academy grew larger in the viewport. “That thing creeps the shavit out of me,” he muttered. He glanced back at the other three members of his team. “Someone mind telling me what the stang we’re doing?”

A Duros technician turned his bulbous head to him, his blood-red eyes narrowing. “Oh, can it, Rids. This is a julaberry run if I ever saw one.” He motioned to the viewport. “This thing’s been dead for ten years. All we gotta do is download data from the computers and leave. Easy as julaberry pie.”

Rids gritted his teeth as he steered for the still-open hangar door. “I swear, Joler. If you mention julaberries one more time…” He trailed off as he gripped the steering control and flipped a few switches on the control panel. “Strap in. This might be a bit bumpy.”

The Lambda’s ventral stabilizers folded up as it entered the hangar. Landing gear extended and glowed as electromagnets were activated. The shuttle silently clamped itself to the durasteel floor. Spotlights mounted to the hull switched on, casting dark and ominous shadows about the cavernous bay.

The main hatch opened and the four team members exited, each clad in a pressure suit and carrying equipment. “Let’s get inside and get main power booted back up,” Rids said over his suit’s comm system. He looked around and shuddered. “And watch out for mynocks.”

They silently padded over to the nearest door. Joler popped a panel off next to the hatch and pulled on the manual release lever inside, popping it open a dozen centimeters. He and Rids then forced it open and allowed everyone inside before closing it. The Duros consulted a datapad. “Main power core is two decks down. I’ll go and get it booted back up so we can take these kriffin’ helmets off,” he said, his voice echoing in everyone’s helmets before turning and walking off.

Rids consulted his own pad before motioning down the opposite way. “This way.” He led his team down the corridor, glow rods held high and lighting their way.

Two minutes later, overhead lights flickered on and air began blowing about as long-idle life support systems kicked on. Rids contacted Joler. “Nice job. I’ll make sure you get a little extra in your pay stub this week.” He checked a display on his suit. “We can take off our helmets in a few minutes.” He motioned to a ladder recessed in the wall. “Let’s stick to non-powered transport for the moment, though.” He grabbed a rung and hauled himself up. “Get those turbolifts fixed soon, Joler,” he muttered.
*****
Ten minutes later
Rids twisted his helmet and pulled it off. “Oh, much better.” He turned to the rest of his crew. “Let’s get the core located, dumped and out of here,” he said. “And hurry. This place gives me the creeps.”

A technician opened a slim black case and pulled out a set of wires from its side. He hooked them into connecting terminals on one of the few intact computer stations in the lab and a screen on the inside of the case lit up. “Power is good and-the hell?” he muttered. The case triple-beeped and he began jabbing at the controls. “There’s an unopened file here. Looks like a journal entry.”

The station’s viewscreen lit up and the image of a cruel-looking lady with wavy brown hair and penetrating eyes appeared. “Journal entry 507. Vilas’ initial tests, although optimistic, have borne bitter fruit.”

A sudden hissing from a recessed wall panel drew everyone’s attention from the image. Gas vented along the cracks as it swung open. “Merging Vilas with a Droch had seemed like the best idea at the time, but it further warped his mind and drove him into insanity. Sadly, the Purella spinnerets and Orbalisk armor had already been attached to his forearms.”

Rids unholstered a holdout blaster from his suit’s equipment belt and shouted, “Get down!” but a single strand of web shot from the hole in the bulkhead, snaring it and snatching it away. It hit the wall, shattering into useless junk.

“Of course, his Force abilities had been enhanced prior to the surgery. I feel that might’ve opened his mind to Orbalisk influence, driving him further over the edge. He became dangerously psychotic and it cost the lives of over twenty stormtroopers to subdue him.”

Rids and his team moved for the exit, but a humanoid leapt from the hole and landed in front of the hatch. The technician recoiled in abject terror at the insect-covered abomination. A black, skintight suit could be seen underneath the pulsing armor. There were two horizontal scars halfway up the forearms and his head was covered by a hard carapace, eyes and mouth visible.

“Going somewhere?” Vilas asked, his tongue lolling out of his mouth. His arm blurred as he grabbed Rids by the arm and lifted him bodily off the deck. “Yes, you are-to hell!”

He swung Rids and slammed the young man against the bulkhead. There was a sickening crunch as his back broke and vertebrae were reduced to powder. The other two didn’t have time to scream as Vilas slammed his fist into their chest, caving in their rib cages and killing them.

Vilas marveled at their corpses before jumping onto the bulkhead-and sticking to it. “Ah, what a wonderful thing telekinesis is,” he said as he ‘walked’ over to Garowyn’s image. “Yes, Vile Vilas is back, you scum!” He clawed at the carapace covering his face as his entire body spasmed slightly. “I’m nothing! I’m poison… I’m Venom.” He paused and the sick grin grew on his face once more. “I’m Venom, yes.”

He jumped off the bulkhead and landed silently on the deck. He walked over to Rids’ body and knelt down. “So, how did you and your band get here? And how do I use it to get off?”
*****
Zekk shot out of bed, sweat covering his body. “NO!” he shouted, not knowing why or even what the dream meant. He rubbed his forehead and willed his breathing to slow. “What the hells was that thing?” he whispered, unable to get the image of the insect-covered male out of his mind’s eye.

He rose and stretched, working out the kinks in his body before checking the chronometer next to his bed. Four hours of sleep? A new record, he wryly thought to himself before walking to his apartment’s kitchen. He arrived just as the comm unit turned on.

Zekk walked over and flipped it on, only mildly surprised at the caller’s 2-dimensional image. “Jaina,” he stated. “Did you just…”

“Have a horrible dream about some freak?” she finished. “Yeah.” She paused and her eyes narrowed. “How did we have the same dream? And did you recognize him?”

Zekk shook his head. “I can’t, but that doesn’t mean anything. Over half my life’s a blank file, remember?”

Jaina slapped her forehead and her cheeks reddened. “Right, sorry!” She paused and looked off screen for a moment before speaking again. “I’ve got to go. We should be hearing from the unit sent to the Shadow Academy soon enough. See you later, Zekk. And may the Force be with you.”

The older man nodded before the image cut off, replaced by a blank screen. He turned to an older-model food-prep unit on the kitchen counter and walked over to begin his day at 0300 hours Coruscant time.
*****
Five hours later
The sun rose over Column Commons, casting a glow over the thousand-meter tall durasteel columns and the hundreds of floors of superstructure they supported. Zekk wandered about the mazelike structure, unerringly following the route to Jaina’s parent’s apartment at the top of Coruscant’s most exclusive residential area. He flashed his ID to a pair of burly and heavily-armed guards before being let inside.

He walked up to the front door as it opened and Jaina walked out. The shadow of a smile crossed his normally dour features as she grinned at him and walked over. Hey,” she said. “No word from the team,” she said, the grin falling away. “Sorry.”

Zekk waved her off. “It’s all right.” He looked up, his brow furrowing. “Is it just me, or is something off?”

Anything Jaina might’ve said was cut off by a sonic boom overhead, shattering the calm and almost knocking them to the ground. Zekk instinctively extended his claws and held his arms up in front of his chest. His eyes scanned the skies, quickly picking up the faint silhouette of a Lambda-class shuttle overhead.

Jaina pointed at it. “That’s the shuttle sent to the Shadow Academy. I recognize the markings!” She turned to Zekk. “Now I’ve got a real bad feeling about this.”

Zekk looked down at her. “How can you tell?” he asked.

The young Jedi shrugged. “I’m a Jedi and a pilot. I’m trained to pick that stuff out.” She reached into a pocket and pulled out a comm unit. “This is Lieutenant Jaina Solo of Rogue Squadron, patch me into-”

The shuttle suddenly exploded, sending debris flying in all directions. Zekk backed up as a particularly large piece headed right for where he and Jaina stood. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, and he was only partially relieved when he heard the snap-hiss of Jaina’s lightsaber behind him.

The debris resolved itself into a humanoid as it landed with a bone-sickening thud in front of Jaina and Zekk. Both recoiled at the sight of the insect-covered male with a psychotic grin. “Ah, my replacement!” Venom shouted, spreading his scarred arms wide.

Zekk’s face screwed up in confusion. “What?”

The… thing’s mouth twisted, his mouth somehow widening in an even larger grin. “Yes, you! You replaced me, Zekk of Ennth! I read all about it in Garowyn’s data files!” Venom turned his head slightly and regarded Jaina. “And my, my! You’ve done so well for yourself!” The grin dropped and his eyes bulged with rage. “I HATE YOU!”

Two security guards ran at the twisted being from behind, but Jaina shook her head at them, warning them off. Venom caught her gaze and turned, eyeing them. “Ah, how nice!” He raised his arms and clenched his fists. “I love presents!”

Zekk ran at him, claws extended. He slashed at Venom, but a gasp escaped his lips as his weapons skidded off the insect armor! “What the-” He was cut off as Venom turned, swiping an arm at him.

“Orbalisk armor, gotta love it!” he shouted, a strand of webbing firing from his left wrist. It struck Zekk on the shoulder, sticking and pinning his arm to his side. Venom tugged and the already-short distance between the two was closed, allowing the freak to punch Zekk in the chest.

There was a low snap of bone from Venom’s hand as it impacted the quantum-armor cage surrounding Zekk’s lungs and heart. He pulled the crumpled hand back, howling in agony, allowing Zekk to strike at him with his free right hand. Venom countered, though, holding up his left arm and deflecting the blow away with his armored forearm.

Jaina closed the distance between her and the combatants in seconds, an alarm going out from her through the Force to every Jedi on the planet. She stabbed at Venom with her electric-violet blade, but even the plasma from the lightsaber failed to do anything other than skitter off his chest.

Venom’s eyes glanced at Jaina. “Pest,” he spat out. He raised his right arm and reached around Zekk’s back, firing off a stream of webbing from it. It quickly widened into a large, sticky net, hitting Jaina and pinning her to the duracrete floor.

Zekk’s eyes went wide with fury and he reached out, snapping the webbing that held his arm in place. He grabbed a hold of Venom’s right arm and still-injured hand. He squeezed, using the Force to amplify his strength. He then turned and knelt down, hip-tossing Venom over his shoulder and to the ground.

The freak arched his back at the last second, though, allowing him to plant his feet underneath and prevent landing in an awkward position. He lashed out, hitting Zekk in the back of his calves and sending him falling to the floor.

Jaina gasped as she felt Zekk using the Force, albeit on an instinctive, animalistic level. “He’s… he’s Force-sensitive,” she said out loud. Most of her body was pinned to the ground by Venom’s web, but her right arm was free-and she still had her lightsaber in hand. She maneuvered it down by centimeters, brushing it against the fluid that covered her head. It sizzled and disintegrated, allowing her to go from a kneeling position to almost-standing. “I’m coming, Zekk!” she shouted.

Venom turned his psychotic gaze to her. “You’ll be coming… to your own funeral!” His tongue lolled out and he clenched his hands, but he stopped short. “Oh, why’d you have to invite them?”

Despite the danger she was in, a smirk crossed Jaina’s face as the front gates flew open and her parents led about twenty soldiers into the front courtyard. “Surrender and Dad won’t hurt you too much.”

Venom snarled at her. “This shall wait until next time." He turned and leapt into the air, twisting around and landing behind Han, Leia and the group of soldiers gathered to stop him. “We must do this again sometime!” he yelled before running off, disappearing within seconds.

Jaina struggled a bit more with the webbing, but Zekk was soon there, helping her to slice it away with his claws. “Are you all right?” he asked, concern on his face.

Jaina finally shrugged the last of the webbing free and gingerly stepped away from the puddle of goop, strands still sticking to her hair and clothes. “I’ve been better, Zekk.” Her gaze followed the path Venom had taken even as Han and Leia ran up to her, smothering her with hugs. “Ack! Need… air…”

Han loosened his grip. “What the hell was that thing? He half-shouted, looking to Zekk. “And why did it attack you two?”

Zekk locked eyes with the older man, claws retracting back into his knuckles. “I don’t know him, but he knows me. And he tried to hurt Jaina, so there will be a reckoning with this… Venom.”

The fight scene between Venom (loved the name...superhero badguy moniker) and Jaina and Zekk was great! Very descriptive and easy to picture. I like that you took the time to develop the characters going onto the Shadow Academy ship and encountering Vilas.

I forgot Zekk is different and i like Jaina's surprise at finding him Force sensitive. Using Vilas as the antagonist and the failed experiment was perfect esp. given how in profic he was the failed chosen one of the Shadow Academy. He'll be the perfect bad guy throughout the story. Only wondering now who else you might introduce?

Zekk is certainly taking his whole new life in stride. You're writing him fairly calm with a tinge of bitter. Yes, he is much like Wolverine!

YAY! applause

A very nice chapter. I do like Vilas's new persona, especially his set of abilities. I'd like to suggest making him unreadable by the force, thus making Zekk the only one that can track him and a much higher threat to the protagonists. The idea comes from the original Venom being undetectable by Spiderman's Spider Sense. Also, I'd also suggest changing the title of this story so that it more accurately describes the story and therefore attract more readers. This story is starting to shape up and it would be great if more people would take the time to check it out.

BTW, what is a Duroch? I never heard of 'em before in any of the stories.

SSM12-Yeah, it's Venom. I figure Sabretooth would be too cliched, and Venom is just... out there.

iamobiwan-Thanks. It was fun to write. happy I figured they deserved that, at least. I picked Vilas early on, actually, as the antagonist. Yeah, there will be some subtle changes here and there.

Ceillean-lol, not sure I like Venom, but thanks. And more, yeah.

Stooky-Good advice, there. Thing about the name is, it was supposed to be one post of Zekk as Wolverine, then another of Zekk as... Batman, then another of Zekk as Spiderman. I guess popular opinion has me at Zekk as Wolverine for a hot. wink Drochs are from Planet of Twilight, last of the Callista Trilogy.

Here we go!

Chapter Three: Seeking Answers, Finding Only Questions
One Hour Later
Jaina’s gaze followed her father as he paced back and forth, hands gesticulating wildly as he wore a path in the living area’s carpet. “I don’t know what level of hell that thing crawled out of, but it can go back there and the sooner, the better.” He stopped and looked at Zekk, who was leaning against a wall opposite Jaina. “Do you have any idea what that thing was, or who?”

Zekk stood up from the wall and stared past Han, into infinity. “I might have met him, but if I did, I don’t remember.” He punched the side of his head and grimaced. “Damn it, for all I know, we’re brothers!”

Han opened his mouth, but closed it. He then waved Zekk off. “Nah. I know what it’s like to have family that hates you, and that’s not familial hate he had for you. At least from what I saw and what Jaina told me.” He looked over at Jaina as she sat on the couch. “Did you ever see the guy?”

Jaina shook her head and waved her hands in front of her. “No way, Dad. I think I’d remember meeting someone who wore bugs and shot webbing from his wrists.” She suddenly stopped waving her arms and looked at her own wrists. “How did he do that?”

Zekk shrugged. “He’s probably modified, like me.” He held up his own arm and his claws extended from his knuckles. “I doubt any other humanoid in the galaxy has these.”

Han pointed at him. “I’d take that bet, kid.” He glanced to the door as it slid open. “Kid! Am I glad to see you,” he said, walking over. “And you brought friends, too.”

Five people walked in, three humans, one near-human and a Mon Calamari. Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker walked up to Han, patting him on the back. “Good to see you,” he said, smiling. He turned to Zekk, his ice-blue eyes penetrating right through the younger man. He held out his hand. “I’m sorry it took so long, Zekk of Ennth. I’m Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master. This is Tionne,” he said, motioning to a pale-skinned, exotic-looking female wearing a silvery dress. “This is Cilghal,” he continued, waving at the salmon-skinned Mon Cal. She wore a dark-colored robe and her mouth opened in a lipless grin.

A young man stepped forward and over to Jaina. He opened his arms wide and hugged her as she rose from the couch. “Damn, I’m so glad you’re safe,” he said. He let got after a minute and turned to Zekk. A lopsided grin crossed his face as he walked over. “Damn, Zekk! I’m glad to see you again.”

Zekk looked him over, brow wrinkling. “Sorry… we know each other?”

Jacen’s face fell. “Oh… Yeah, that’s right. Jaina told me and Tenel Ka about your memory loss. I’m sorry, Zekk.” He held out his hand. “I’m Jacen Solo, Jaina’s twin brother.”

The slightly older man shook his head. “It’s all right.” He took Jacen’s hand and shook it. “Nice to meet you-again,” he joked, a mild chuckle on his lips. He turned to the final member of the quintet, a tall redhead with piercing gray eyes. “Is this Tenel Ka?’ he asked, instinct coming into play.

The woman nodded, lips pursed slightly. “Indeed, friend Zekk. We met once before ten years ago, so I do not expect you to remember me. I am Jacen’s wife, Tenel Ka Djo-Solo,” she stated with a slight nod of her head.

Zekk smiled at her. “It’s all right, Tenel Ka. I think I’ve seen news programs on you two, now that I think about it.” He turned to Luke even as Tenel Ka’s cheeks reddened. “So, why are you here?”

Luke smiled. “Cilghal is the foremost Jedi Healer in the Order and might be able to help with your memory loss. With your permission, she would like to perform a physical examination of you to determine what exactly was done to you. Tionne is our historian, and might be able to provide insight on what happened to you-and to the thing that attacked you.”

Zekk looked to Cilghal and his eyes narrowed slightly. He held his arms out to the sides. “Do what you want to me, Cilghal. I’m sick of questions. I want answers.” He then looked to Jacen and Tenel Ka. “Wait… what are you two here for?”

Jacen shrugged and exchanged a glance with his wife. “Moral support?”

Tenel Ka nodded. “We are family, and that is a fact.” She turned to Jaina and held out her left hand. “Jaina, you’re all right?” she asked, concern lighting her voice somewhat.

Jaina smiled nervously. “Oh, just great. I find an old friend who had his memory wiped and was experimented on, and we were just attacked by something straight out of a nightmare.” She smiled sweetly, batting her eyes. “Other than that, I’m fine.” She looked to Zekk and locked eyes with him for a moment. “If it wasn’t for Zekk, I’d probably be dead.”

Zekk waved her off. “If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be in danger in the first place.” He turned back to Cilghal. “So, any idea how to get my memory back?”

Cilghal’s eyes swiveled around and locked on to him. “Until I can examine your mind and body, young Zekk, I cannot say for certain.”

The young man nodded, mouth set in a grimace. “Fair enough.”

Luke cleared his throat and everyone turned to him. “Zekk, there’s another matter that must be addressed.” His eyes locked onto the black-haired man and seemed to look through him. “Yes, Jaina was right. You are strong in the Force.”

Zekk blinked before smirking. “Right, pull the other landing gear!” His smirk died as he noted Luke’s expression not changing. “Wait, me? He asked, right hand patting his chest. “I’m a Jedi?”

Luke shook his head. “You have the potential to be a Jedi, Zekk. If you so choose it. Your power is great, but unrefined and can be dangerous to you without training.” He motioned to Jaina. “Jaina told me that she sensed something from you when fighting that thing. And from the description she gave me, and information Tionne has, Sith alchemy was involved in its creation.”

Tionne cleared her throat and spoke for the first time. “The insects covering its body appear to be orbalisk armor. Their shells are light-saber resistant and blaster-proof.” She held out a datapad to Zekk, who took it. It showed an image of a small, golden-colored insect with a small antenna jutting out from underneath its carapace and multiple legs beneath. “It feeds off the host’s Dark Side energy, in return providing it with virtually impervious armor. The only weaknesses are at the neck and wrists,” she said, sliding a finger across her throat. “Was it wearing a helmet or hood of some sort?”

Zekk looked up from the datapad. “Yeah, it covered his entire head.” He handed the pad back and shook his head. “Damn, is it normal to have a buzzing in the back of your head?”

Jaina stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. “’Buzzing’?”

He turned his head around and nodded. “Yeah, right here,” he said, pointing to right below his earlobe. He took a step away from her and frowned. “Now it’s slightly stronger…” Zekk stepped back again and knelt down. “And just a bit stronger, but not by much.”

Luke frowned. “Has this ever happened before?”

Zekk stood back up. “Nope.” He snapped his fingers. “That thing! I must be able to sense it!” He held up his right hand and his knuckle claws extended. “Just let me at ‘em, I’ll stop that freak!”

Tionne’s eyes darted about in confusion. “Wait-how could you sense him, if that’s what it is? You have no training at all. You didn’t even know about your Force-sensitivity until about two minutes ago!”

Tenel Ka spoke up. “Perhaps… there is a link between Zekk and the creature?” She locked eyes with Zekk for a moment. “How else would it be able to find you in all of Coruscant?” She looked around. “And can anyone else sense him?”

The Jedi in attendance slowly reached out with the Force, eyes half-closing. After a few minutes… “No,” Luke confirmed. “That much anger and evil should be visible like a beacon, but I can’t sense anything that malevolent.”

A smile slowly blossomed on Jaina’s face. “So he tracked you here, and now you’re the only one who can track him!” She clenched a fist, but stopped. “Wait-what about the crew that went to the Shadow Academy?” She looked to Han, eyes wide. “Dad, can you please go contact General Kre’fey, or Starfighter Command?”

Han nodded. “Consider it done, sweetheart.” He turned to Luke and patted him on the back. “Thanks for stopping by, kid. Say hi to Mara and the kids for me.” And with that, he turned and headed for the kitchen.

Zekk headed for the door, hands clenching and unclenching. “If anyone needs me, I’m gonna be busy tracking this thing down and removing said head from body by the neck.” The door opened for him, but he stopped as he felt a familiar hand on his forearm. He turned and saw Jaina standing there. “Jaina, what-”

“I just got you back. Do you honestly think there’s any way I’m letting you go off and wander alone without me?” She looked up and her eyes were shiny with unshed tears. “No chance!” she gritted out. “You and me, you hear?”

Zekk’s emerald eyes narrowed. “But it’ll be-”

“I’m a Jedi Knight, remember? I’ve fought the Diversity Alliance, Black Sun, remnants of the Shadow Academy and a hundred other threats. Coruscant’s my home, and no way in the nine hells of Corellia will I let it be harmed by that freak!” She unclipped her lightsaber and held it up, igniting it and sending forth an electric-violet blade.

A smile crossed Zekk’s lips as he stepped out the door. “All right, Jaina.” He stooped and turned to Jacen. “Hey, tell Peckhum I’ll see him again.” And with that, he walked off.

Jacen nodded. “Yeah, and you take care of my sister!” he shouted after him. He half-closed his eyes and sent Jaina a message through the Force. Be careful, please.

A message came back almost immediately. Don’t worry, bro. We’ll be back.
*****
Fifteen kilometers below Coruscant’s upper levels
Venom punched a wall with his good hand, sending chunks of duracrete flying. “Why couldn’t I beat him?” he screeched out. He turned and held out his right arm. Webbing shot from his wrist and ensnared a rusted chunk of metal. He whipped back and sent it flying into the wall with a crash, impaling it right through the wall and leaving it hanging.

He grabbed at his head and fell down into the fetal position, rocking back and forth. “Why couldn’t I beat that pathetic wimp?” he screamed, voice echoing in the cavernous room he found himself in.

“You couldn’t beat him because you’re only half as smart as you could be,” a voice echoed in his head and from his lips.

Venom leapt to his feet, hands out in front of him. “Who’s there?” he shouted, eyes darting about. “Show yourself!”

“I cannot, for I am around your head. You recall Garowyn mentioning you being merged with a Droch? Well, that’s me. My body was altered and I now encircle your head, keeping the orbalisk armor from spreading over your mouth and suffocating you. I was also supposed to be psychically merged with you for stability. The physical connection at the base of your neck is there, but until now, I couldn’t speak with you.”

Venom clawed at the back of his neck, feeling a ridge at the base of his neck. “How do I get rid of it?”

“Why would you get rid of me?” the voice echoed, coming from Venom’s lips in a smooth, melodious manner. “I can offer you so much more. A calming influence, advice… just like when you took that data chip from Garowyn’s computer at the Shadow Academy and hid it in that fake droch in your back right thigh.”

Venom knelt down, reached back and felt around, eventually coming to a droch that didn’t twitch as he touched it. He peeled it back and plucked a small piece of plastic from the inside of it. “What does it hold?” he asked, holding it up and looking it over. “Does it have information about me?”

“No, our enemy. It’s Zekk’s memories, encoded and ready to be downloaded into his mind. Wouldn’t that be the perfect distraction at an opportune time?”

Venom smiled and laughed. The guttural sound echoed off the walls of the underground chamber. “Perfect! Yes, I see there are advantages to us working together.” His eyes narrowed. “But this is a bit inconvenient, wouldn’t you say? Talking like this is slow, and gives away our plans.”

“Precisely, which is why we must merge mentally, Vilas. Both of us must become one. I can do it, but it will be painful.”

Venom waved him off. “Do it!”

A sudden pain shot from the base of his spine to his head, enveloping it. His eyes watered and he dropped his knees, clutching his head. Venom punched the wall with his still-healing right hand, re-injuring it and worsening the breaks in the bones. “I-I am Venom!” he shouted.

The droch’s voice echoed from Venom’s mouth. “I am Venom.”

“I am Venom!”

“I am Venom.”

After a few minutes of incoherent shouting, Venom slowly rose to his feet, the pain leaving his mind as two became one inside his twisted psyche. He looked to a piece of transparisteel and saw his reflection. Venom held out his right arm and smiled.

“We are Venom.”
