Title: In This Place
Author(s): Lonewolf
Timeframe: NJO
Her skin is soft beneath his fingers. The scent of vanilla lingers on her body, filling his senses, lighting his mind with memories. Her body is lithe and strong in his arms. Her muscles are hardened by battle, and her curves are perfect and soft. Her hair is silky to the touch, and slides through his fingers like water. Golden and beautiful. He loves her hair.
But the golden strands are disappearing into the pool of red. They're vanishing into the crimson liquid before his eyes, staining into rust colored locks. He clutches her to his body as a feeling rushes through him that he can't describe. It's something hot and desperate, and it's taking over his mind like the red that consumes her beautiful hair.
Her eyes, those green eyes, stare at him lifelessly beneath long lashes. He realizes how many different colors make up her gaze; flecks of honey and grey are mixed within the emerald shade. Why hadn't he noticed that before?
His grip tightens around her tiny form. Squeezing his eyes closed, he can almost making himself believe they're alone in the dark, tangled in the sheets of their bunk, whispering in the shadows.
But, then he feels the warmth dripping out of her, sliding between his fingers, hot and sticky. He opens his eyes and he can see, for the first time, the chaos surrounding him. Fire has cast the valley in red. The sound of explosions rip through the air around him, and debris rain from the sky.
For the first time since he saw the thud bug slam into her body, he feels his heart beat again... and then rip apart in his chest. Waves of agony crash into him, and suddenly, he's screaming. He's screaming and hurting and pulling her impossibly closer to him, desperate to feel some glimmer of life through their bond. But that light inside of his mind has flickered and died. The familiar hum of her thoughts had vanished.
It wasn't supposed to be like this. She couldn't die. Others could. He could, but not her. Her heart couldn't stop. Her eyes couldn't fade. Her blood couldn't pour from her body like it had from so many others.
"Anakin!!" He hears his sister's voice over the din of battle. Through the fire he sees her face, dirty and wild. "Anakin, we have to go!"
Her words echo through him, and by instinct he responds. Hot tears streaming down his face, he forces himself to his feet. He holds her body in his arms like a sacrifice, a sacred thing. Through the fire fight, he carries her, oblivious to the pain shooting though his own exhausted body.
All he can do now is carry her away; carry her away from the darkness and death of this place. She doesn't belong here. She made up all the light in his world. But now, he knows the darkness, the death that surrounds him will become all that he is. And, in a moment, he says goodbye to the scent of vanilla, and the warm feel of her skin. He says goodbye to his Tahiri.

Lovely - although heart-wrenching.
She made up all the light in his world.
So true, so true. And vice versa.
Another nice little snippet,

RE: In This Place
I just found this fic and I love it!
I love this passage in particular. Just gorgeous. It captures how time seems to have stopped for Anakin in his moment of trauma, and how for this one moment he can hover in denial. A wonderful vignette. The title caught my eye too, being so stark and evocative, and I think it suits the fic perfectly. I'm looking forward to reading more of your stuff!
