Title: Red Sky
Author: Lonewolf89
Characters: Anakin and Tahiri (surprise, surprise)
Timeframe: NJO AU
Author's Note: I plan *crosses fingers* to develope this into a longer fic, but I'm starting classes again in a few days, so my updates maybe few and far between.
The sky looks familiar, but then he's seen so many skies on so many planets. It's comforting to think he knows where he is, though, so he allows himself the illusion as he stands in the rubbled remains of the planet. The planet he thinks he remembers.
His peripheral vision is shot. Whether it's from the explosion or the torture, he's not sure, but at this moment, it doesn't really matter. He can see the sky. For the first time in three years, there's something above his head besides coral ceiling and duracrete. He's seeing most of it through the red haze that's left of his eyesight, but it's sky, and it's air, and it's one step closer to life than he's been in a very long time.
He shifts slightly, putting his hands on his hips. The coral implant attached to his shoulder pulls uncomfortably at his muscles, clenching them tightly together. The tug has become so familiar to him that he ignores it. The cool evening air feels good against his skin. He ripped away the self-sealing, Vong clothing the moment he escaped, and now he's standing naked in the ruins of whatever planet it is that he's just destroyed.
For a moment, he wonders if this isn't reality at all. Maybe it's a vision, or even worse, a twist of his own imagination. But suddenly the sky is lit with a million shooting stars, and he believes the reality of the moment. Logically, he realizes the lights are simply the remnants of Vong ships colliding into the atmosphere, but he he doesn't let what he knows get in the way of what he wants to believe. He would have never escaped to begin with had he only focused on the facts.
He wonders if there's anyone left up there. Beyond the battleships and legions of warriors, he wonders if anyone he knows is left in this galaxy. There was someone he loved. He can't remember her name, but the face is clear in his mind, and it's kept his hope alive all the years of his captivity. Her eyes, beautiful and green, shine out in the dark places of his mind. And standing here now, alone on a planet that he's destroyed, he sees them reflected in the fire that rains from the sky.
~
The sheets are tangled around her when she wakes, heart racing, eyes wide. The dream was like so many others she's had of him. But this was different in a way, a ways that made her feel what she hadn't allowed herself to feel in a very long time... hope.
Slipping from the blankets, she pads softly towards the window and gazes out at the expanse of sky. "I'm here," she whispers to the stars. "Come and find me."

Anakin+alive = goodness. If only people with the initials GL didn't think people would be confused by the name Anakin this wouldn't have to be just a wishful thinking fan fiction.
Good writing so far, looking forward to more about the best duo in the EU.

Oh my stars, I second and third everyone else who's reviewed this and say I hope you expand on it as well. What a brilliant start, so very intriguing!! And I absolutely loved the last line, so perfect, and it really sucks you in.
Wonderful job! If you add more, please let me know with a PM (if you do those).

Wow, that was amazing! I loved the vivid descriptions, they were both startling to the senses and realistically picturable! Lovely job with this, I am very eager to see more!

I'm glad you like how I write these two. They're my favorite characters, and it's always good to know when other A/T fans like my characterizations.
Thanks for the feedback, Jedi-Ant! I'm be sure to add you to the PM list.
divapilot: I've always loved how their relationship has defied the odds, made more by their will than by the realities that surround them. Anakin saves her from a planet full of Vong, they have their first kiss in an airless locker... the romance of it all! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

RE: Red Sky (Updated 1/1 Happy Birthday Thrawn!)
|
Thrawn mentioned his birthday was on the 2nd, so, being the brilliant person I am... I took the hint. Happy B-Day McE. It's a bit short, but I hope you enjoy.
Black Sky:
Space is black. It is dark and infinite, and in its endless expanse, he can see a million stars that light the surfaces of a million planets. He's missed space, and he's missed flying even more, the sense of being apart of that infinity. Cramped inside of the cockpit of the battered corralskipper, he's learning what that feels like all over again.
His hands are moving along the control panel instinctively. He has no idea where he's going, but he knows he'll end up exactly where he's supposed to be. The hum that's been driving him in the back of his mind assures him of that, and since it's gotten him this far, he doesn't bother to question it.
Staring into the darkness through hazy eyes, he wonders if he's the same person he used to be. He doesn't remember his life before his capture, but he knows he wasn't always a prisoner of the Vong, and he knows there was pleasure at some point before the years of pain.
But, there will be time enough to wonder later. Now, he needs food and rest. Since there's no food to be had, he'll have to settle for sleep. So, he closes his eyes and leaves his ship to drift. As he does, he allows himself to dream, to dream of her, the beautiful woman who's eyes seem brighter than all the stars that surround him.
~~~
Her bare feet sink into the thick mud as she leaps from her X-Wing, squishing between her toes pleasantly. Closing her eyes, she reaches out with the Force, sensing the forest around her that's bright and pulsing with life. It's a good feeling, one she's missed in all the years onboard ships.
Opening her eyes, she can hear the rustle of curious animals in the darkness around her as they creep in closer. She wonders if there's a reason she came here during the night cycle. The Force has plans of its own, and it will be curious to see what its intentions are.
But, for now, she must see to more practical matters. Mara Jade had taught her that during her years of apprenticeship. Pulling herself from the thick mud, she truges toward solid ground, slinging her pack across her shoulders. The decision to come here struck her suddenly. She knows she's come to wait for something, and that's enough for her now. She's learned to listen first and ask questions later. That much, she's learned from Luke.
So, she locks down her ship and plunges into the darkness. There's a cave up ahead. She'll head there, and then... she'll wait.
Firstly, thanks for the PM. It's so great to see more of this wonderful tale so soon.
As he does, he allows himself to dream, to dream of her, the beautiful woman who's eyes seem brighter than all the stars that surround him.
Aww... so sweet!!
So, she locks down her ship and plunges into the darkness. There's a cave up ahead. She'll head there, and then... she'll wait.
Dagobah?? That's my guess, anyway. She's waiting at the cave for Anakin to return to her.
Another fine post, Lonewolf! It's really great to see that the A/T 'ship is still alive.
Oh, and happy birthday, ImpWok!!
Ant.
