You know, it never really clicked for me until I read this story, but now I know exactly what Wes is: He's a puppy. A big, goofy, endlessly loyal puppy.

Oh yeah, and "Darklighter Memorial Medical Center": Nice touch.

Can I be on the PM list?

8 Januar 2008

Well, the docs have been in already this morning and they are going to spring me into Wes’s tender mercies in a couple of days - I can’t wait to get out of here - as long as I begin to eat; with all the medications, I just haven‘t been hungry, I just pick at my food which I‘m told is not good. I have also just been informed that when it comes time to begin rehab on my shoulder, Wes will be the one working on it with me - I’ll be in good hands - they have been showing him the exercises and things that I will need to do to bring my shoulder back.

I struggled to sit more upright in bed, “So, Wes, once I’m out of here what do you say to you, me, Tycho and Hobbie taking a few days and heading out to Lando’s Adventure Resort?”

“And just what are you going to be able to do there, boss, in your condition? You can’t ride the thrill rides and those are the only fun ones.”

I pouted and if my left arm weren‘t strapped to me and in a sling, I would have crossed my arms over my chest in defiance, “There’s plenty I would be able to do and you guys can do the stuff I can’t together without me - I won’t mind, I‘m sure I could keep busy.”

“Ah, Wedge, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Ackbar, AND the doctors, say that you are to have complete rest in order to heal and come back 100 percent? My understanding of Ackbar’s standing orders for you do not include any trips in the near future to an amusement park - we can go once you’re better; besides, I already have it planned out where we are going for the next three to six months it is going to take for that shoulder to heal completely.”

“Oh?”

“Yep, but it is a surprise and now it is time for you to get out of bed and do some walking and maybe sit up in the chair for awhile - the docs want you up and mobile before you can go home.”

With Wes’s help, I managed to sit up on the edge of the bed, “Do I really have to do this? With this damn hospital gown on, my backside sticks out.” I didn’t tell him that sitting up made my woozy and a bit nauseous.

“Don’t worry about your cute little backside - we took care of that and I brought you some sweats from your quarters to wear. I’ll help you get them on and then you can walk around the room and down the corridors - the doc wants you to get a lot of walking in.”

Several minutes later, I was wearing a pair of my black sweat pants and with the help of my nurse, Wes had gotten me into a sweatshirt as well - needless to say I was much more comfortable and felt more human than I did in the hospital gown. I had a pair of flip-flops on my feet as they insisted that I could not wander around in my bare feet. I stood up, the room swam before my eyes so I closed them until it stopped, “Ok, I think I’m ready to take that walk, Wes.”

Wes just grinned at me and handed me my IV pole that I was still hooked up too and we headed for the door. We walked up and down the halls several times before returning to my room - Wes helped be back into bed and helped me get comfortable again. My nurse was waiting there for me when we returned. “Now that I am up and around, when can I take a shower?”

Sure thing, Sis - consider yourself added to the list grin

9 Januar 2008

I got to take my first shower today since I have been in the hospital and it beat to all hells the bed baths the nurses have insisted on giving me; they are embarrassing - it is not easy doing it with only one arm and I had to have help especially washing my hair and drying off but at least I feel human and the hot water made most of my aches and pains diminish somewhat. They have left the IV in my arm but disconnected me from the machine and have taken all the wires and leads off now that I am up and about. Wes and I roam the halls at least three times a day and sometimes Tycho and Hobbie will come with us if they are there visiting - they are being kept pretty busy running the squadron in my absence but today is Tycho‘s day to relieve Wes for a few hours so that he can get some sleep. He was sitting in Wes’s chair by the door when I came out of the ’fresher.

“Tycho, have you found out who was behind the assassination attempt, yet?” I asked as I climbed on to my bed and attempted to get comfortable - not an easy task when you can’t use one arm and shoulder.

“They are still investigating it, Wedge, but so far signs have pointed to a enclave of Imperial resisters based on Coruscant - the guy Wes shot, he’s the one that got you, is going to survive but he is not talking although NRI has rounded up about a dozen of them at the hotel after the shooting. Corran was responsible for helping with that - turns out several of the waiters were involved in the attempt of Ackbar’s life. Let’s change the subject; I am really not suppose to be telling you these things - Ackbar’s orders, you are suppose to be concentrating on getting well not on the assassination attempt. So, boss, how are you feeling today?”

“Tych, you know I want to be kept informed even if there is nothing I can do from this hospital bed - it concerns me, as well.” I looked at my chrono, “Wes should be up soon and then it will be time for our daily walk - the docs are letting me go outside for the first time today and you know Wes. . . “

“Yep, he will be armed to the teeth like a Wookiee and twice as deadly,” Tycho grinned.

“I heard that,” came Wes’s voice from behind the curtain, “And you’re damned right - as Wedge’s bodyguard it’s my duty to protect him at all costs and at all times.” Wes came from around the curtain with a towel draped around his neck and his shaving kit in his hand, “My turn in the ‘fresher, guys - has your nurse been in yet this morning?”

“No, not yet, but he should be here soon - it’s just about time for my meds and for breakfast so hurry it up.”

Tych continued to fill me in on the goings on in the squadron and by the time Wes got out of the ‘fresher, my nurse had been in and breakfast brought; I tried to give mine to Tycho but he wouldn’t take it - said I had to eat it even if I wasn’t hungry or he would report me to Ackbar - the womprat.

Tycho took his leave of us once we were outside in the courtyard saying that Gavin would be by later today to relieve Wes overnight so that he can sleep - the poor guy has not been sleeping too much trying to hard to watch over me so Tych and I devised a plan where one of the Rogues would come by at night and keep guard so that Wes can get some rest - he protests of course but he is no good to me as either bodyguard or aide if he is tired.

For shame on those who shot Wedge! I hope they turn him over to Wes.

Marvellous two updates.
I had to smile a bit, when I read about Tych's refusal to eat Wedge's breakfast tongue
And Wes shouldn't feel guilty- he can't be everywhere...

You know, as I think about the guilt thing...if the situation were reversed, it would be Wedge that felt guilty. It's just the way the boys are - the way it should be. They look out for one another. I am especially taken with the way you portray that, Brother dear.

And thank you for the PM. happy

11 Januar 2008

My stitches come out the day after tomorrow and then I get to go home the day after that - finally. Physical Therapy came by this morning to check out my shoulder; the bacta bandages have really been helping the surface healing but they were more interested in getting me to start gently moving the joint so that I don’t develop what they call ‘frozen shoulder’. They worked on my shoulder for almost an hour and now I am so sore I feel like I was run over by a herd of banthas but they said that they are coming back this afternoon to do it all over again and twice a day until I leave and once I go home I am to keep it up - you should have seen the gleam in Wes’s eyes at that, I know he can’t wait to ‘torture’ me with my physical therapy.

Tycho brought by some data card books the other day when he was here and I have been reading those between my walks with Wes, my physical therapy and napping but today. . .well, today one of the books made me start thinking back to the early days of the Rebellion and where I am at I began to remember Biggs and remembering Biggs meant remembering Jek ‘Piggy’ Porkins as well. I remembered the day we heard that Leia’s ship had been captured by Darth Vader - the memories came flooding back as if it had just happened yesterday.

Wes shook his head as he looked at the small amount of food on my tray, "I just can't figure out how you manage to survive on so little food Wedge," he teased me.

"Yeah, well I don't know how you manage to eat so much and still fit into your X-wing - besides, I eat enough," I kidded back; we continued to talk as we ate: I looked up slowly as a familiar shadow fell across my plate, "Hey Biggs, Piggy," I smiled at our other roommates who were several years my and Wes's seniors.

"Morning Wedge; I see you yanked Wes out of bed again to run with you, or maybe I should say I heard you yanking Wes out of bed again this morning," Biggs Darklighter said as he set his full plate, piled high with food, down and took a seat next to me, reaching over and ruffling the my dark brown hair as he did so - which he knew I hated: Piggy took his place opposite me and Biggs and sat next to Wes; he nodded good morning to his us as he dove into his first plate of food, munching away happily as he chowed down on his breakfast.

"Yeah, well I have to do something to burn off all my nervous energy, and at 0430, Dodonna wont let me in the Sims, something about me needing my sleep or something," I muttered quietly as I pushed the food on my tray around, picking at it occasionally, not really interested in eating.

Noticing that his I was not eating the food on my plate, "Hey Wedge, if you don't want your breakfast I'll take it," Jek 'Piggy' Porkins spoke up as he polished off the food on his plate.

"You're welcomed to it Piggy, I'm not real hungry this morning," I said pushing my plate towards my roommate, "I'm full anyhow."

Jek reached across the table - gratefully accepting my uneaten breakfast as he slid the my plate towards himself; he dove into the my untouched food contained on it as though he had not eaten in days, "Thanks Wedge," he mumbled between mouthfuls; when finished he excused himself and headed back to the buffet for second helpings.

Wes absently wiped his mouth on his sleeve, "I cannot believe that you are not hungry Wedge after that excruciatingly long and exhausting run you dragged me on; don't do that, I need my beauty sleep," Wes winked looking at our bunkmates, "Imagine, being dragged out of bed and being forced to run half asleep, cold and hungry at 0400 nonetheless, it's horrible," Wes finished the food on his tray and took a sip of his drink.

"Yeah, well, I'm just not, ok," I put a hurt look on my face and frowned; leaning back in my chair, I crossed my arms over my chest, "And it was not 'an excruciatingly long or exhausting run', it woke you up didn't it; and besides, it was not 0400 hours, it was 0430," I broke into my familiar lopsided grin, "Beauty sleep, yeah, right, Wes." Looking around, I lowered my voice, "Hey, you guys think we can sneak into the sims this morning."

Wes grinned at Piggy, "I guess I really shouldn't complain too much, I can sleep when I usually do - during briefings, on missions. . ." Wes said as he got up for seconds: he was gone for several minutes but returned to the table before Jek, "So, I wonder if something big is going to happen soon the whole base seems abuzz - you guys think we could we be seeing some action soon against the Imps," Wes asked, his eyes darting around the table at his roommates.

"I don't know but it sure feels like something big is up," I said softly sipping my bantha milk as Wes returned to our table with a second helping of breakfast; I reached up and brushed my dark hair off my forehead and out of my eyes as I gauged my roommate’s reactions to mine and Wes's comments.

Indicating to include the returning Porkins, Biggs motioned his roommates in to huddle closer together over the center of the table so they could speak without being overheard; whispering, looking around conspiratorially, "I've heard that the Princess's ship had been captured by Darth Vader and that most all aboard were killed in the attack - I don't know how true any of that is but if the rumor is true we are in serious trouble and I would not be surprised if some of us were tapped to go out and attempt a rescue mission."

Piggy nodded his head in response to Biggs' statement, "I heard the same thing from some of the guys in Gold Squadron," he commented as he gnawed on a piece of fresh fruit, "They were saying that Vader sent out a comm signal claiming all on board except the Princess were dead, including the Captain of the ship - which doesn't look good if he uses typical Imperial interrogation techniques on her."

"B-b-b-but the Princess would never betray the Rebellion," I stuttered, my voice filled with dismay and my dark eyes full of confusion, as they flickered back and forth between my two older roommates, then to Wes, "She just wouldn't - nor do I think she could," I added adamantly.

Wes stared at me, "Of course she wouldn't - not purposely anyway," he declared as he took a big bite of his eggs, "I've heard about some of the interrogation techniques the Imps use, ruthless is one word that comes to mind." Wes gulped down his drink and finished off his plate - I still looked stricken with shock; "Hey, Wedge, buddy, it'll be ok, I'm sure the Princess is ok - she wouldn't divulge our location," Wes glared jokingly at Biggs. "Don't scare Wedge like that, Biggs, you know how much he loves Princess Leia L-O-V-E loves her," he laughed and punched me in the shoulder.

Biggs grinned and retorted, "Serious up, Janson this isn't a time to be joking, a lot of us could die - and probably will die; I'm ready for a fight just bring 'em on," he added grimly.

"I do NOT love the Princess, at least not how you are implying it,” I said glumly to Wes as I sank down into my chair and pretended to sulk; suddenly I sat up, brightening - "Hey, if they're going to send someone from here to rescue the Princess that means it could be us so. . ." I stood up suddenly, grabbing Wes by the arm, "Come on, we can get some simulator time and I know just how to do it." I dragged Wes from the table, and Biggs and Porkins followed the two of us closely, as I hustled them towards the Simulator Room.

Wes was taking one last bite of his food as I dragged him off; he chewed and swallowed hastily, "Damn it, Wedge, don't do that! I could choke," he coughed - I could hear Piggy and Biggs snickering behind us - Wes turned and glared at them.

I dragged my friends down the hall and into the Simulator Room; looking around quickly, I noticed that we were the only ones there, "Come on," I said as I lead the way to the X-Wing Sim pods where I quickly punched in a command override code into four of the pods - a code I had sliced earlier in the week so I could practice during the night when everyone else on the base was sleeping: I slipped into my Sim pod and programmed in an attack on a Star Destroyer, "Ready to play guys," I asked into my comlink as I fastened my crash webbing and settled a helmet over my dark brown hair.

Biggs and Porkins climbed into two of the other Sim pods and strapped in, "I am ready Wedge," Porkins replied, "I have four lit and in the green - I am good to go."

Several hours later and exhausted, myself, Wes, Porkins and Biggs finished in the sims, "Meet me in the Mess in half an hour Wes," I whispered to my friend as he left. I headed towards our quarters to shower and freshen up before my big surprise for Wes.

I remind myself that every now and then it is good to remember the good times I have had as I have seen way too much death and destruction for someone as young as me.

A noise interrupts my reverie, I look up to see Wes looking at me, concern filling his deep blue eyes, “Wedge, where were you, I’ve been trying to get your attention for the last five minutes.”

“I was just remembering one of the good times you and I had with Biggs and Piggy back on Yavin,”

Wes just smiled, reached over and tousled my hair like Biggs use to do, “You need to do that more often, boss, or this war is going to make you old before your time.”
