Prologue

Journal Entry 1001-33-02 Standard Coruscant Cycle

Sleep eluded me again last night. No matter what I do, I just couldn’t sleep. I tried to meditate, but couldn’t find my centre. It seems that the Force is eerily quiet these days, almost completely dark, as if some malevolent force is bending it to it’s will. It was dark before, but now it’s even worse. If that was possible.

No, the reason I didn’t sleep tonight, was the same reason I’ve not slept for the last several years. The events of that day replay in my mind’s eye every single time I close my eyes. No matter what I do, I can’t get those events out of my mind. That was the day the light was almost extinguished.

I remember that day as if it was yesterday, it forever haunts my sleep, at least when I’m awake, I can focus on what I need to be doing, but every time I close my eyes, it’s played out again before my eyes. Each time I try and see what I could have done differently, but no matter how hard I try, nothing seems to work.

On that day, the last hope of the galaxy was extinguished. Master Skywalker and I left for Vijun in the hope of saving Ben from Jacen. Luke had already lost Mara, and he wasn’t about to lose Ben without a fight. Han and Leia flew us there in the Falcon, as well as what remained of the Jedi.

It was a ferocious battle; Jacen’s Sith warriors against a group of twelve Jedi Knights, and the last two masters alive. One by one, I could feel the Knights succumb to the Sith blades, as they were over-run by the sheer numbers of those who’s minds had been twisted by Jacen’s teachings. There was only four of use left, and for some reason, they didn’t attack us as fiercely as before, and it was then I realized; they were trying to keep us from helping Luke. Then the unbelievable happened.

Somehow Jacen managed to get through Luke’s defences, my lasting image of Luke Skywalker, Jedi Grand Master, was his headless body falling to the floor, his head rolling to the feet of his sister Leia Organa Solo. His lifeless blue eyes not giving a hint of the pain that he must have been feeling.

Han screamed at me to get Ben out of there, but I couldn’t. Now the warriors re-engaged us with the same ferocity as before; as Han ran towards his son intending to take him down. I couldn’t help but watch was Jacen deflected the blaster bolts away from his father; and when he realized that his father wasn’t going to forgive, he did the most unthinkable thing. He killed his own father. The look of betrayal on Han’s face spoke more than words ever could. I vaguely remember Leia screaming, before she too fell to her son’s blade. If there was any goodness left in Jacen, it was now gone.

That was the moment when I knew I’d failed. That’s when I knew that the galaxy would be plunged in to the depths of darkness the kind of which we’d never seen before, and perhaps not even survive.

How I escaped, I’m still not sure. I was in such a shock that I didn’t see a stabbing lightsaber coming towards me until one of the younger Knights leaped in front of me, taking the blade full in the chest. She screamed at me to run, so I turned, and ran for my life. I somehow got to a ship, and blasted off that Force-forsaken world. It was then the realization hit me, that I was the last of my kind. I was the last of the Jedi.

To make matters worse it seems like something or someone is controlling the Force itself in someway, I’ve felt this for some time. But whenever I get close to finding my centre, it seems like there is a shift in the Force, it’s as though somebody doesn’t want me to find my centre. But to be honest, I don’t care any more. All that matters is that I failed. I couldn’t get Ben away. And that’s the pain that stops me sleeping.

I am alone.

I'm guessing Kyp's the one speaking?

Very, very unexpected to have everyone just die like that.
More, please! Definately got me hooked.

And update. I wrote out the first few chapters ages ago, and I've written the climactic final battle too. But it's getting there that's going to be the trick grin

Yeah, this fic will concentrate on Kyp a lot. I originally wrote this as a movie script, then figured it'd be better as a story. I even have sketches of some bits..

I had to kill everyone off like that, as it's going to be a very dark story, and sadly they're not going to make a re-appearance in the near future. As much as I'd like Luke to return in ghostly form.

More is coming grin

[b]Chapter 1[b]

Jedi Master Kyp Durron laid down his flim-pad, and wearily ran his hands over his face in a futile effort to wake himself up. He cast his eyes around what had been his home for the last several years.

He’d come to Kashyyyk five years ago, looking for a safe haven away from Jacen’s hordes of Sith Warriors. The Wookies agreed to hid him as an honour debt to the legendary Han Solo. The hut was high in the mighty trees that covered the planet. Thus assuring Kyp the privacy. Only a handful of Wookies knew that he was hiding there.

His residence was a large circular hut, which consisted of one main communal area. Against the north side was the small kitchen unit. The south side of the hut had the cot he slept in. At the foot of which was the only possession he had, his chest. Which contained his meager belongings.

A large fire place stood in the middle of the room. Unused, lest it attract unwanted attention. And dotted around it were some comfortable chairs, one with a small table beside it. On which sat a holo-album.

Against the west wall was a small alcove that contained the fresher. There was hardly any furniture worthy of the name.

Kyp noticed that he’d forgotten to clean up after last night’s meal. Wearily he threw the bed clothes off and stalked his way towards the kitchen. He switched on the caf machine, which started to percolate, as he set about tidying up. He knew he’d never sleep now, but he also knew he had to rest at some point. Soon as he finished tidying up, he got on with making breakfast. Porridge. Again. He’d just finished preparing the simple meal when he heard the caf machine click. He placed a small mug under the nozzle, and pressed a button. A dark black liquid oozed out of the nozzle, filling the cup to the brim. Kyp took a sip, savouring the sour taste, as he made his way with his breakfast to the comfy chair. He placed the mug on the small table, and proceeded to eat his breakfast.

As he ate, he could feel the nutrients seep in to his body, as the body broke down the food to be used as energy. He could feel the energy move through to his legs, his arms and chest, he sensed it being absorbed by the muscles that had been denied for too long. He could sense what remained of his muscles desperately using the protein in the food to repair themselves.

What was once a strong muscular frame was now little more than skin and bone. His cheek bones stood out, his cheeks hollowed out, as though someone had scooped them out with a spoon. His eyes seemed to have sunk into his skull, with dark black rings around them, giving away the fact that he’d not slept properly for some time. He looked down at his knees where the sleep shorts ended, and could almost see his femur bone, as well as his knee cap clearly. There was scarcely an ounce of muscle on him.

There was no doubt among those who knew him that he wasn’t taking care of himself. Despite their best efforts. Kyp saw this as his purgatory. Such was the state the Jedi Master was in. Such was the price of failure.

He set the bowl down, and took another swig of his caf. He reached across for the holo album, and flicked it on. He smiled wistfully at the photo of himself with Han and Chewie. It was taken not long after they’d escaped the space mines of Kessell.

He moved on, and a photo of himself with Master Skywalker at his Knighting ceremony. A lump formed in his throat. His knighting only came after he’d returned from the Dark Side, and nearly ended up killing his Master. But the look of pride Luke had on that day dispelled any doubts in Kyp’s mind that Luke ever held it against him. He recalled the words Luke said to him that day. “To face one’s darkness, and to overcome it, is the first step in gaining mastery of yourself.” Those words echoed in Kyp’s mind ever since.

The next photo was one of him, Anakin, Jaina and Jacen. It was taken on their trip to Endor, where they were to meet with the Ewoks. They all looked carefree and happy there Kyp thought to himself. And of the four of them, only two remained. Anakin long gone; killed by the Vong, Jacen becoming a Sith Lord, and Jaina, Kyp wasn’t sure if she was alive or dead.
Kyp set the small holo album down. “This won’t do me any good” he thought to himself. As he wearily got up and cleaned his mug and bowl. He stalked towards the chest and dressed himself. He caught a sight of himself in the mirror. “you’re a mess Durron” he said to himself.

He moved the chairs from the middle of the room, and started to work through his exercises. He started by stretching out his muscles, loosening the kinks and knots in them. As he stretched his back, he could hear his spine crack as the trapped nitrogen in them escaped. He felt loose.

He started by doing his unarmed combat katas. Closing his eyes, Kyp moved through the motions of the kata.

He started with his feet about a shoulder’s width apart. Then suddenly dropped his knees and twisted to his right aiming out a punch to an imaginary target. He slowly brought his left leg up until he was standing again. Spinning to his left, he executed a block from a high blow and shoved his right hand in to the gut of the imaginary target, spinning low to his right, he swept out his left leg, which would have toppled his enemy, and with a flourish punched down towards the floor where his head would have been. He held his punch for a moment, and released the pent up tension that started to creep to the Force. He suddenly launched himself into a spinning kick, that would have taken the head off any opponent, and landed cat-like on the ground, his left leg bent at the knee, his right foot sweeping the floor in front of him slowly. He stood there for what seemed like an eternity. The exercise was over.

He opened his eyes, and scanned the room. He found his staff, which had become his lightsaber. His heart ached as he closed his eyes for a moment, and brought to mind the moment he’d lost his own.

~*~*~*~*~

He was running for his life from Jacen’s forces. He ran down one of the corridors that led towards the hangers, as the Sith chased him down, their eyes ablaze with hatred and anger.

Kyp rounded a corner and slammed himself against the wall. Shielding his presence he waited until one of the Sith came careening round the bend. He never had time to react; the azure blade lopped his head clean off his shoulders, his body slammed into the wall with the momentum, as another saw what had become of his colleague, he rounded the corner and swung his lightsaber towards where Kyp’s head would have been. Kyp expecting such an attack ducked, and brought his lightsaber straight through the Sith warrior slicing from his groin to the top of his head.

Kyp knew he couldn’t fight them all, so he turned and ran again. Sadly there was no further bends in the corridor before he got to the hangers. So he turned. He knew that due to the narrow corridor they could only attack one at a time. But that didn’t deter them.

The Sith charged at him, intending to over run him. Kyp raised his right hand and sent a massive shock wave through the Force. The Sith were flung backwards, some impaled themselves on the blades of their comrades.

Kyp turned to run towards the hanger, but the Force screamed a warning at him. Spinning round, he could see the lead Sith leap at him from the wall. He sidestepped and brought his saber up to block. But the blades never met. Kyp’s saber was sliced through the hilt. It clattered to the floor.

The Sith thinking victory was assured started to swing his saber towards Kyp. Kyp knew he had to act fast, so he stepped inside the saber swing and elbowed the Sith warrior straight in the chin. He stumbled backwards, dazed for a moment. His eyes turned red, as he tried to lash out with the saber. Kyp stepped to the outside of the swing and held the Sith’s arm fast with a cast iron grip. It became a struggle of wills. The saber inching slowly towards the remaining Jedi. Kyp concentrated hard, and tried to ignore the smug grin that formed on his opponent’s face. Suddenly, Kyp let go, and the lightsaber passed straight through him.

The Sith thought victory was his, but then noticed that the lightsaber didn’t kill him. As he went to swing again, he could hear what sounded like broken glass fall to the floor. Its focusing crystal had been destroyed. Furiously he launched a barrage of Force lightning at Kyp, who dived out of the way.

He reached out and sensed more Sith were on their way. He had to end this now. Reaching out with the Force, he called a fallen Sith’s lightsaber to hand, and snapped it in to life milliseconds before the Force lightning would have hit him square in the chest. Kyp lay there pinned to the floor under the unrelenting Force that was unleashed upon him. The other Sith were almost upon him now, holding his lightsaber with one hand, he flung one of the dead Sith in the way of the lightning. The second it hit the body, it disintegrated, but it was all the time Kyp needed to spring out, lightsaber at the front and impaled the Sith warrior through the heart. The look of horror and hatred never leaving his face.

The other Sith rounded the corner now, and charged towards the Jedi Master. He stood firm, saber raised ready to meet the onslaught that charged towards him.

He sidestepped the first warrior and sliced hard across his exposed back, severing his spinal column, then bringing up his saber to cover an attack on his own spine, he forced the saber into it’s owner’s own chest. Another was rounding a corner, and Kyp knew that now was the time to escape. Using the Force he flung the saber at high speed, and it found its mark, right between the eyes of the Sith warrior, he tripped over the body of his comrade as he stumbled back, and as he did so, another warrior rounded the corner, and was impaled in the stomach, assuring himself a slow and agonizing death.

Weaponless, and alone. Kyp knew it was time to run.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kyp sighed as he tried to put the memory to on side. Picking up his staff, he started to move rapidly through each of the lightsaber katas. Even without a strong connection to the Force, his moves were fluid, graceful.

He swept out his left leg, his staff in the traditional guard position the whole time. As he landed, he twirled the staff as if deflecting a hundred blaster bolts. The staff was a blur of motion. All of a sudden he brought the staff across his back to block an imaginary attack on to his spine, and spinning he sliced the head off his imaginary opponent. His eyes closed as he focused on each move.

His mind drifted somewhat, thinking that it was a good job that the average Wookie was well over two meters in height.

The kata was nearing it’s crescendo, when Kyp stopped suddenly. Reaching out, he could sense great anxiety rolling off one of the Wookies that was charging towards his home. He knew that it could only mean one thing.

They’d found him.

Oooo...you left us with a cliffie!!!

I'm really getting into this. I like the katas descriptions and the flash back to the fight with the Sith. Very detailed and interesting.

I'm guessing Jaina is alive and the two will find each other eventually. This will take time, but hopefully they will kill Jacen,. Well, it's just my hope and prediction! grin

Yeah, I really wanted to paint this in a graphic way, because I find that you can put a little of yourself into the character as well. I tried to recall the saddest moments in my life, and use those feelings on poor Kyp. But he does get whole again...:)

Chapter 3

“He’s not going to make it!” said one of the beings.

Another shook his head, “He must make it. All will be lost if he fails.” It said.

Another piped up, “Help he will need. Someone must go to him.” There seemed to be consensus among the beings. “Who will go?” The being asked.

One stepped forward, it’s body had an ethereal glow to it. “I will go.” It said. It closed it’s eyes as it prepared for what was to come.

A blinding flash built it’s way up from the centre of the being’s body, as it receded, it was no longer there. It had gone.

////

The air seared in Kyp’s lungs as he ran through the vast forest world of Kashyyyk. His legs, despite being weakened by his lack of proper eating, still pounded like a pair of pistons. He moved swiftly through the forest, and despite his weak connection to the Force, Kyp was able to negotiate most of the obstacles, others he simply had to find a way round. He couldn’t afford to take much with him, he knew that time was of the essence. He entrusted his trunk to the care of the Wookies, who swore they’d ensure it was well hidden. The only thing he had with him was his knapsack, which contained a few rations, and some data pads.

He reached out with his senses, he knew in his heart that he’d never make it. He could sense the Sith coming to try and cut off his only escape route. He called on the Force to try and help him to run that bit faster.

He could see the hull of the ship coming up now. But he could also see the Sith waiting for him.

He didn’t have all that much time to come up with a plan of action, so he had to think fast. He chose to speed up; his legs worked even faster, his breaths coming in short gasps. Using the Force, he called a fallen branch to his hand. It wasn’t a lightsaber, but it would be useful. He speeded up again, and launched himself off a fallen tree trunk.

The surprise on the Sith’s face brought a wry smile to Kyp. He knew that the Sith never expected Kyp to fight without a lightsaber, that was a mistake that would initially give Kyp the upper hand. Kyp arched his body straight for the Sith, and using the fallen branch clubbed the Sith hard in the temple. The branch snapped under the force of the impact. The Sith fell to the ground dead. A deep welt in the side of his head.

Kyp had no time to rejoice in his victory. He knew there were more on the way, calling the fallen Sith’s lightsaber to hand, Kyp steeled himself for what was going to be a severe test of his skill.

He didn’t need to wait long, four Sith appeared in the clearing; their lightsabers ignited, they all charged towards the Jedi Master.

Kyp stood there and waited, until the last possible moment, he extended his hand, and sent a Force Shock Wave, which sent three of them tumbling backwards in to the undergrowth.

One somehow managed to avoid such a fate.

“Impressive Jedi. Most impressive.” He said, his eyes a sickly yellow.

Kyp shook his head and laughed, “don’t you Sith have ANY original lines? Or do you regurgitate the crap of previous Sith lords?”

The young Sith snarled, “indeed, and where is the rest of the Jedi hmm? They were stupid enough to be duped by Sidious, and history repeated itself again, when Skywalker’s own turned on him…” the Sith allowed the words to hang in the air for a moment before he continued “…and you call the Sith pathetic? You really should look in the mirror Jedi.”

Kyp knew that the Sith was stalling, giving his comrades a chance to recover and attack the Jedi en masse.

“So what’s your plan? Do you intend to talk me to death? That’s the trouble with you Sith, you always did talk to much.” Kyp quipped.

The Sith didn’t rise to the bait. “Oh, but I’m not like the other foolish Sith, we keep our focus on the here and now. Where it belongs. And here and now, is when you shall die.”

The other Sith were coming to back him up now. Kyp knew he had to act fast. He charged at the lead Sith his borrowed lightsaber humming, he swung high but as the lead Sith went to block it, he changed direction in midair, the Sith never stood a chance. A horrified gurgle left his throat as Kyp sliced his torso clean in half.

He didn’t stop there, he used the momentum of his swing to slice the leg off another Sith, who screamed in agony as he fell down.

The third Sith charged at Kyp at full speed, but Kyp was already going through his next motion. He called upon the Force and flung the Sith high into the woodland, where she was impaled through the chest by one of the mighty branches. Her lifeless body hung there.

The four Sith charged at Kyp with all the hatred he could muster. Kyp knew full well that he couldn’t dupe this one the way he’d done the others. They fought ferociously, each trading blows that aimed to kill or maim. The difference was that Kyp did it to defend himself, the Sith did it to dominate.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The hooded figure watched in admiration as the lone Jedi dispatched three of the Sith with considerable ease and confidence. His attention was drawn to the fourth Sith who stood back and analyzed the Jedi master’s moves. "Wise move." he thought to himself.

He watched with wonder as the lone Jedi took the remaing Sith head on, despite his weakened connection to the Force. The figure watched in admiration as the Jedi didn’t allow his situation to distract him from his focus.

He knew that the time to act had come. He left his hiding place, and moved in to the clearing.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Kyp was growing weary. He’d spent most of his strength killing the other three Sith that he didn’t leave enough to fend off the last one. It was obvious that he’d be fooled. It was this Sith who was the leader, not the chatty one. Kyp noticed that the Sith was becoming bolder and more aggressive, and he knew that he wouldn’t last much longer.

The Sith’s blade got through his defenses, and sliced a deep gash in his right thigh. Kyp screamed in spite of himself as he tumbled to the ground, his hands gripping his leg tightly.

The Sith towered over him, gloating in his victory. “The last of the Jedi…”

A clear voice called out behind the Sith Lord, “What makes you think he’s alone?” His tone was clear, precise and clipped. He strode out confidently into the clearing. His brown cloak billowing out behind him on the gentle breeze.

The Sith Lord spun around. “And who are you?” he demanded.

The figure didn’t make any moves to reveal his identity. His hood was pulled low enough over his face to cast it in deep shadow. “Who I am is irrelevant, but what I am is not. All you need to know, is that I am your doom.” There was no emotion in the voice, just fact. As if he’d known this all along.

The Sith Lord laughed a booming loud laugh, as he raised his hands and tried to electrocute the Jedi, who raised his hand and absorbed the lightning with ease.

“Come now, have the Sith not learned any new tricks?” he goaded.

The Sith Lord snarled, and tried to bring down a might branch from one of the trees down upon the Jedi’s head.

The branch stopped millimeters above the Jedi’s head, before he nonchalantly waved his hand which sent the branch careening towards the Sith Lord.

His eyes widened in shock at the branch hurling towards him. He leaped out of the way and ignited his lightsaber, slicing the branch in half.

The Jedi leaped towards him, his Azure blade ignited and engaged the Sith.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kyp looked in wonder at the unknown figure. His moves were graceful and purposeful, it seemed as though he was able to anticipate every single attack. It was clear that the Sith was growing more and more frustrated and was starting to make mistakes in his fighting technique.

He swung wildly at the Jedi who leaped clear over his head and brought his lightsaber crashing down on the Sith blade, driving it into the Sith’s own shoulder. The Jedi spun and neatly decapitated the final Sith Lord, his lifeless body slumped to the ground with a thud.

The Jedi stood there a moment, the blade still humming in his hand. He disengaged the beam and turned to the fallen Jedi behind him.

He strode over and offered his hand to Kyp, who took it with gratitude. “Thanks” said Kyp. “I’ve not seen any lightsaber fighting style like that ever. Where did you learn to fight like that?”

Kyp could see the trace of a smile appear on the hooded figure’s face. “I was taught at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.”

Kyp resisted the urge to laugh, “that was…what, thirty or forty years ago! That would make you about eighty, but you move like a man half your age.”

The hooded figure bowed his head at the compliment. Silence rose between them, before Kyp broke it, “I’m Jedi Master Kyp Durron, I was a student of Luke Skywalker.” He said, extending his hand to the Jedi.

The hooded figure looked Kyp in the eyes, he could sense the pain inside the young Jedi. “I know” he said quietly. “I was Luke’s first master.”

Kyp was now confused, “That can’t be right, Luke’s first master was killed by Darth Vader on the Death Star.”

The Jedi nodded, “Yes, I was.” He peeled back his hood to reveal a young man in his thirties, with pale blue eyes, and a thick mane of brown hair. His face was covered by a full beard. He extended his hand towards Kyp.

“I am Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’ve come to help you.”

Go Kyp! tongue At least the man can still fight.
I'm a bit confused as to why and how Obi-Wan showed up. I'm intrigued.

Great update!

You'll see in the later chapters, it will be revealed happy Suffice it's to say that Obi-Wan will play a major role in what's going to come.

It had been awhile and so I reread the older posts to refrsh my memory. While reading I thought: "How like Obi-Wan on Tatooine has Kyp's life become " (wow, that came out Yoda-esque!)

Anyway! Great so Obi-Wan shows up to help. I guess if it must be any Force ghost he would be the right one. It'll be interesting to see Kyp and him together. But....who was standing with Obi-Wan is the big question???

Wow!! This is so incredible! I tend to skim through stories, a few really good lines catching my eye, but this entire thing was fascinating. I especially loved the first-person original post.

“Impressive Jedi. Most impressive.” He said, his eyes a sickly yellow.

Kyp shook his head and laughed, “don’t you Sith have ANY original lines? Or do you regurgitate the crap of previous Sith lords?”

laugh

And I'm very interested to find out how Obi-Wan got there! Kyp and (young) Obi-Wan fighting side by side... love drooling

Please let me know when you update!
