FIREBRAND

Prologue

The fires of the desert raced for the horizon. The infernal heat of Hell plunged toward frozen night as the first of twin suns melted into the deep purple void. Fueled by the rapidly changing temperatures, the bitter, sandy winds ground into her skin, blasted her eyes. The suns and dunes blurred, and suddenly she was blind.

Knowing her opponent, knowing what should follow, she raised her lightsaber into a sweeping frontal guard. Her left hand arced low to high, until her knuckles crashed into a rampart of solid metal. The jolt raced all the way back to her shoulder.

She stepped left, kicked high with her right, her body parallel to the ground. For an instant her face was shielded from the pummeling winds. Blinking, blocking blindly, and then she could see again. Her vision took in the panoramic vista, nothing more.

She reached out instinctively, but the Force refused to answer. It couldn’t. She had been fighting so hard, all instinct and guts, she’d forgotten the void.

Before panic could rise, she found her opponent. His armored head raced into view. Close. So close she drew her weapon tight. But too late. The helmet crashed into her forehead, snapping her head back, sending her reeling.

The ground ejected the air from her lungs, depriving her brain of what little sense it had left. The weapon slipped from her hand. Her fingers scrambled for purchase; pure will made her knees drive up in an attempt to rise. What they found wasn’t gritty sand, but smoothness. Sudden clarity erupted in her thoughts just as clutching flesh spiraled up her left leg.

The Sarlacc!

She looked upward, searching for the waiting hand, a rescue to signal this last training session was over. None was there.

Far enough back to guarantee safety from the eternally hungry beast, Boba Fett watched. Feet apart, hands relaxed at his sides, he gave no indication of concern. The ysalamiri perched in their cages seemed more interested in her fate than he did.

The truth of her situation tugged at her more strongly than the ravenous Sarlacc below.

“This wasn’t the deal!” Jaina screamed.

“Dead or alive, I’ve still gotten paid, hut'uun.”

“Go frag yourself!” She wrapped the fingers of her left hand around one of the long teeth trying to propel her body into the creature’s gaping maw.

Jaina wasn’t done yet, even as her fingers began to lose their grip. Shutting her eyes, she banished her anger and locked down her passion. The simple act of control went against every instinct bred into her. Fear cried out for attention as she slid further down the slope. Her pounding pulse shouted, Death is imminent.

Without aid, without the Force, there was no escape.

Yet Jaina would not – could not – yield.

She let go, sliding into the pit. Her palm skimmed two rows of teeth before her fingers snatched closed on another. Her right hand stretched low, digging out the knife sheathed in her boot. In a fluid move, she swiped.

The Sarlacc’s screech pierced the dusk, its severed tentacle falling away. Jaina bit the blade, securing it across her mouth, then began to climb. With four free hands and feet, she used the rows of teeth for leverage and scrambled for the maw’s far side. Teeth dug into her flesh, still seeking to claim her for their owner. Daring a glance below, she watched a second tentacle flailing up from the depths.

With one last surge, she jumped high. Snatching the knife, Jaina threw it straight and true.

Abruptly power surrounded her, surged through her, a rejuvenation as great as if the first setting suns had willed her its dying breath. Time became an eternity. The Force flowed from her right hand toward the greedy maw, propelling her upward.

From above, the Mando war cry. The old bounty hunter’s emotions flared.

Her flip brought Jaina to the pit’s rim.

She stalked toward her opponent. The blood-covered blade flew from the ysalamir’s corpse to her waiting hand.

Gev!

She ignored him, and charged. His left arm came up in defense.

Ke gev!” echoed a second voice out of the darkened desert.

The words were supposed to be her trigger to stop. Their failsafe.

Jaina ignored it, too. No flinch. No hesitation. She was going to finish –

Her body collided with an invisible wall, and she fell back against the sand. A snap-hiss announced the glowing blade aimed at her throat.

Panting, Jaina paid no mind to the weapon. Its wielder had been a Jedi; she did not fear him. Instead, her stare never wavered from the visor that hid her adversary’s face. To the interloper she said, “He was going to kill me.”

“You…” Deliberately, slowly, Boba removed his battered green helmet. He looked as bad as Jaina felt. Right shoulder definitely lower than the left. Weight solidly settled over his left leg. Blood trickling down from his hairline. “…were about to do the same.”

He turned to the man holding the lightsaber. “She’s ready, Gotab.”

Gar serim.” With a nod the other man retracted the blade and stepped back.

Boba leaned forward, extending his left hand. Jaina studied him, weighing trust, honor, and what little she understood about his personal code – and took it. They both swayed as she rose. For a moment, awkwardly, each balanced the other.

The Mand’alor straightened. “Has the rendezvous with the Jedi insertion team been finalized?”

Gotab tipped his head. “It has.”

“And you’re confident your Imperial will show?” Boba asked Jaina, smug.

My Imperial?”

Gotab chuckled. “You win the bet, Boba. Based on that reaction, the agent really was her riduur.”

Her eyes flashed wide. “How –”

“I was concerned when your meet took longer than anticipated.” Gotab placed a fatherly hand on Jaina’s shoulder. “I wanted to send reinforcements to retrieve you. The Mand’alor, in all his wisdom, opted for patience.”

“An Imp spy walked into our midst, and you chose that time to smile.” Boba’s mouth curled at one corner. “After that, I expected your arrangements might require special timing and coordination.”

Jaina glared. “You should have let me kill him, Gotab.”

The old man squeezed her shoulder. “Save your energy, bev’ika. Time enough for killing.”

Jaina exhaled, letting everything go in one breath. She met Boba’s gaze. “Would you have done it?”

The bounty hunter canted his head. “Let you die?”

She nodded.

“If you had lost today, you were as good as dead in two days’ time anyway.”

Jaina couldn’t argue that point. “What makes you so sure I’m ready?”

“The failsafe,” Boba said. “You didn’t hesitate.”

“Your brother will believe he has a safeguard, probably more than one,” Gotab added. “We know now your training has paid off. Any failsafe he throws your way will not work.”

“Great.” Jaina’s shoulders sagged. “You’ve succeeded in turning me into an unstoppable killing machine.”

“You shoot straighter than a Why-Vee-Aitch. Your blade swings truer than any Jedi Master. You fight tougher than the finest Mando beskar.” Boba gingerly tested his shoulder as if to prove his point. “But if you’ve learned nothing else from me, it’s that underneath every set of armor beats a heart. It took me a lifetime to learn that… Your heart makes the impossible possible, bev’ika.”

It was the first time Boba Fett had used the nickname bestowed on Jaina by the Mandos. She knew it would be the last. “I’ve made a mess of my client,” he said to Gotab. “Can you have her wounds healed before we hand her over to the Jedi?”

Gotab held his palm up and grinned. “I learned my trade from the best.”

Jaina tried to smile appreciatively, but she was so out of practice the effort was futile. The aches and pains of the day’s lesson roared throughout her body, and her legs nearly gave way beneath her. A healing trance would go a long way toward mending what ailed her. The rest… probably nothing would ever fix the gaping hole deep within her soul.

Glancing over her shoulder, she eyed the last rosy glint of the second setting sun, and shivered.

Sounds good, sounds very good, I'm actually liking Kyp and Zekk in Lotf. I also think Syal is a great character. Soontir though, it'll be interesting to see how you work him into the story and what his thoughts concerning Jag will be. And speaking of Jag, him and Jaina are the first two characters listed, does that mean something, like is this going to be J/J?

Ah, well, I'll just have to wait until the 28th to see, won't I.

How beautiful and poetic! It reminds me of that"Season in Hell" poem (by some French guy whose name escapes me...) grin Actually, that would probably make a good title for a lot of Jaina's training...

Ouch, a girl hates feeling predictable, doesn't she? tongue Still, I'm sure someone with Boba Fett's perceptiveness could see that right away, if only to use it to his advantage.

This post reminds me of all the reasons I love Jaina Solo as a character. She comes from a long line of females that kick ass, and she's following in their worthy tradition.

I loved it!

TK great start! I suspect I am going to like your speculation even better than the real thing. Of course I imagine it is almost a guarentee that there will be a definite J/J ending.
It sounds like Boba was able to teach Jaina exactly what Jag pointed out to her- she needed to use any means to accomplish her goal no hesitation.
See you Monday!

What a fantastic description of someone who is, say, Invincible! Best of all, you've ensured that Jaina has retained her "heart" and therefore her humanity. She's not the killing machine that many people around her feared she was becoming.

I truly can't wait to read more!

Oh my gosh! That was so good! I really beleived Boba was against her there at the beginning...total sweetness. It was very engaging.

Well, good to know Boba has trained her effectively. But I hope she takes that stuff about her heart to heart. Ha, ha. That's what makes her different from Boba, from the other bounty hunters and Madalores, from Jacen. It's what makes her a Jedi, above all else. Now that she has Boba's training to back it up, she really does seem to be the Sword of the Jedi.

I have to ask. Is the Imperial Jag? Please, let the Imperial be Jag...

Wonderful start! Can I be on the PM list? I promise I won't neglect my reader duties.

BTW great training from Boba wink
