*SPOILER WARNING*: This story will contain a lot of LOTF spoilers and a few NJO spoilers...you are forewarned.
Title: The Face of a Warrior
Author(s): NightSword
Timeframe: LOTF post-Fury
Characters: Jaina, Jag, Zekk, Kyp, Jacen, Tenel Ka, Han, Leia, Luke, OC's
Summary: As Jaina struggles to understand what it means to be the Sword of the Jedi, an old friend from Jag's past emerges that could be the key to ending the war--for either side.
Here's an idea for a story that I dreamed up. It takes place after Legacy of the Force, Fury, and is meant to agree with the books and movies for the most part. That said, I have changed a few details (especially regarding the government of Carida). Although the topic doesn't show it, Jaina, Jag, Zekk, and Kyp will be involved in relationships; I just don't want to give those away just yet.
There will be weekly Monday updates with some bonus updates thrown in.

Prologue
"A parting is only a beginning..."
Jedi Temple, Corusant
Jaina sighed, and threw herself into a chair, slumping exhaustedly into the cushions, and waiting for Jag to acknowledge her presence. He sat to her side in an identical chair, back straight and posture perfect. Some things clearly never changed, she thought. There were still some habits from his years with the Chiss that he retained. Unfortunately, waking up at insane times in the morning also seemed to be one of them.
Reaching out with the Force, she clearly sensed that he had noticed her presence, but was too deep in thought to respond. She paused, rather than interrupting his thoughts, so that she could gather her own. When she had finally decided on a course of action, it seemed that he had also; in any case, he finally spoke.
“So you came,” he noted, careful to keep any sort of emotion or inflection out his voice.
“Solos don’t break their promises,” she said, then immediately winced at her words. The Killik war was still too fresh, too imprinted in their minds for the statement to even be remotely true. Even now, her own twin brother was hardly a good example of honesty.
“You can hardly say that Darth Caedus is still a Solo,” he remarked, his voice still bland. She winced again. Had it really been that obvious what she was thinking?
“I’d rather not get into the philosophy of what my brother is or isn’t,” she said, hoping to head off another discussion or Jacen’s morals. She wasn’t sure just how many more of those she could take.
Thankfully, he didn’t argue, but instead swiveled around in his chair so that he was fully facing her. “You’re going to see Fett, aren’t you?”
She blinked in surprise, working hard to keep surprise from her features. “I’m not that easy to read, am I?”
“It was the only logical deduction from the evidence.”
She looked at him sharply, studying his face carefully. Sure enough, there was the slight twist to the side of his mouth that his voice had indicated. Jaina glared at him. “You mean, Zekk told you.”
“Zekk only told me that you were going somewhere, and that he got the impression that you thought that I wouldn’t approve. I put the rest of the pieces together.”
“I assume that you know why?”
“Are you asking because you want to confirm that I know the reason you think you’re going for, or because you don’t have an answer and you want one?”
“I—never mind. In any case, I was wondering if you’d like to come along.”
She was gratified to see a brief flash of surprise across his features before his face resumed its normal, emotionless, mask. “Why me and not Zekk?”
“Damn,” she thought. Now the two were actually conspiring against her. Aloud, she merely said, “Zekk has some other…issues he has to deal with here. So are you coming or not?”
“As much as I would enjoy spending the next few months of my life training with an insane Mandalorian and a Jedi who sleeps with her lightsaber under her pillow, I’ll have to decline the invitation. Maybe some other time.”
She allowed her lips to twitch into a brief smile before replying. “What’s your real reason?”
He sighed heavily, and sunk into his chair. “There are several issues that I have to deal with as well, including a number of unresolved ones from the end of the Killik war and my time on Tenupe. Then there are others that have to do with this war. If it all works out, we could gain some very powerful allies.”
“Will you still be here when I get back?” She didn’t know why it mattered that he was there when she returned, but it did.
“Very likely, although I can’t make any guarantees. Nevertheless, you can expect some surprises by the time you get back.”
“Very well. I have to get going.” She felt awkward, but pulled him into a brief hug. Thankfully, he didn’t comment. “Clear skies, Jagged.”

I'd be happy to add you to the PM list.
Expect another post tomorrow afternoon.
Here's a little teaser for what's coming:
But my biggest fear, Jaina, is that you’ll turn to the dark side to save your brother. That you’ll start seeing the dark side as a sacrifice in order to save the galaxy, but you’ll only end up losing yourself. And because, this time, there may not be anyone left to pull you back

Here we are!
Chapter 1: A New Trickster
“The best tricks are the expected ones, simply because they are expected.” –How to Think Like Han Solo, Volume 1
(Six Months Later…)
Secret Jedi shelter (Flareship)
Taking a step back, Jaina caught the brunt of Zekk’s thrust on the very tip of her lightsaber, using the momentum to pivot herself around on her left foot. She winced, as the action reminded her of one of her training sessions with Fett. She didn’t bother to hide her unease from her Force bond with Zekk. Although the hive mind and most of their connection had faded with time away from the Killiks, they were still closer than most Jedi, and she had little chance of hiding anything from him.
“You alright?” Zekk asked. “You looked a bit upset there.”
She sighed. “I just need to brush up on my lightsaber skills. The time with Fett didn’t exactly help with that.”
Zekk shot her a skeptical look. “You’re still better now than I ever was.”
In response, she feinted a slash to his shoulder, then ducked low to avoid his blade and slash her lightsaber across his stomach. He couldn’t get his lightsaber in a defensive position fast enough, and her blade stopped an inch away from his stomach. “Point,” she said, and deactivated her lightsaber.
Grinning at her, Zekk said, “my point exactly.” She glared at him for the pun, but her continued on, feigning nonchalance. “You’ve already beaten me twenty times out of twenty.”
A feral grin crossed her face, and she felt Zekk’s wince. “Another spar then?”
Zekk shook his head. “We’ve already been at this more than enough for today. If you want to spar, go find Fel.”
“If you think that humor is going to get you out of sparring,” Jaina said, “then you’re absolutely wrong. Who else am I supposed to train with? And plus, while sparring sessions with Jag may help me get used to dealing with unconventional methods that he’s cooked up, he’s not exactly one to give tips on lightsaber technique.”
Zekk snorted, remembering the last time he had observed one of the Jaina-Jag sparring matches.
Jaina and Jag had walked up to him, arguing heatedly about something. He’d tried to intervene, of course, but they had both ignored him, and continued their bickering. Finally, Zekk had simply resorted to shutting Jag up using the Force, since he’d figured that Jag was far less likely to get revenge on him for the action than Jaina was.
Jaina, realizing that the argument was essentially over, had finally begun to explain. Or, more accurately, to yell at him without explaining why.
“He’s absolutely insane! Zekk, you’d better convince him off this bantha-brained idea before he doesn’t have any brains left!”
“Whaaa…?” It didn’t help that he’d only gotten a few hours of sleep, and the sense of annoyance being projected from Jag—he was almost sure that Jag was doing it on purpose just to annoy him, knowing that Zekk would have to be tuned in to him with the Force to keep him from talking—was giving him a headache.
Jaina glared at him, and he felt a hard slap connect with the back of his head. “You’d better wake up right now, you…you…street urchin!” she finally explained, apparently for lack of a better insult.
He merely laughed, which only served to incense her even more. “If you want me to keep Jag from doing something, you’re going to have to let me know what he’s trying to do.” Zekk hadn’t bothered to keep the amusement out of his voice.
Jaina was starting to look frazzled as well. “Jag here is going to be a typical, stupid Corellian male, and he’s insisting on using a real lightsaber in our sparring match. Something about needing a real lightsaber for the trick he wants to pull off. He’s be pulling off his own head if he tries to deal with a real one, that’s what’s going to happen!”
At that point, Zekk had started to lose his focus thanks to the headache he was experiencing, and Jag had managed to inject himself back into the argument, which didn’t help things at all. Eventually, they had worked out a compromise: Zekk would sit in on the sparring match and make sure Jag didn’t do anything too stupid, but on the condition that Jag explained to Zekk what exactly he was trying to pull off. After Zekk had heard it, he had to admit that it was a good idea.
Jaina’s feeling after the match had been a lot more conflicted. She’d admitted that it was an interesting idea, but she still couldn’t believe that Jacen would try such a technique on her, and she seemed to be refusing to do such a thing to him as well. After many heated arguments over the subject, she had simply stalked out, and the three had reached a silent agreement to let the matter rest there for the time being.
Zekk saw a scowl creep onto Jaina’s face as she caught the direction of his thoughts.
“In that case,” she said, turning towards the door “Never mind then. I’ll go find Jag and ask him to wax some more strategy and philosophy in my direction. Maybe something will actually come out of it before we’re all sitting around, white-haired and grey-bearded.”
Zekk let out a quiet sigh as Jaina walked out the door.
For all of our sakes Jaina, let’s hope that you’ve dealt with this by the time you have to confront Jacen, or, Force help us, you’ll lose. You may have acknowledged that he’d done dark, but you haven’t accepted it, at least not yet.
It’s one thing to hope that you can redeem him—and we all hope that you can—but it’s another to depend on that thought to get you through all of this the way that you’re doing.
Jag’s already dealt with a lot of your barriers, and, if we had enough time, then he could probably get rid of all of them. But that’s exactly the problem, because we don’t have forever. The longer we sit here, the more powerful Jacen will grow, the more control he’ll assert over the galaxy, and the harder it will be for us to win. This galaxy has already been ripped apart by too many wars over the last few years, and I don’t think that it could deal with another Empire and another New Rebellion.
And then, of course, how many more people will Jacen kill before we can stop him? Notice that I say “stop,” not “kill,” because I’m still a dreamer too—because I still believe, the way you do, that Jacen can be redeemed. I’m just not depending on it.
More to the point, how many people will die before you’ll be ready to stop him. Because, we all know that if you face him before you’re ready, then you will die, and the rest of our hopes with you. Prophecies do have a way of getting them fulfilled.
And because we—I—know that you’ll blame yourself for every one of these deaths. You’ll wish forever that you could have readied yourself a day faster, and maybe some mother somewhere wouldn’t have to suffer the way yours did when she lost Anakin. Maybe some child somewhere won’t have to mourn the way you did for Anakin.
‘Yours is a restless life, and never shall you know peace, though you shall be blessed for the peace that you bring to others.’(1) But you’ll never see the ‘peace that you bring to others,’ because you’ll be too busy blaming yourself for all the death and destruction in the galaxy. After all, you’re a Solo and a Skywalker through and through.
But my biggest fear, Jaina, is that you’ll turn to the dark side to save your brother. That you’ll start seeing the dark side as a sacrifice in order to save the galaxy, but you’ll only end up losing yourself. And because, this time, there may not be anyone left to pull you back.
Jag—he’s already done it once, and, even if he doesn’t talk about it much, I can see how much it took out of him, and that was when he still loved you. Now, you may call each other friends, may even call each other close friends, but there are too many buried and festering wounds for either of you to truly trust the other. It’s not about trusting the other to watch your back, or your life, but about trusting the other to do the right thing.
I’ve been there, Jaina. I can still remember the day when you saved me on the grounds of the Jedi Temple. I can still remember your trust, your utter faith in me. The fact is, you and Jag don’t have that type of trust anymore, and you’re going to have to be willing to work for if you want it. And the first twist on my road to redemption was my choice—my choosing to come back. But, Jaina, you’re a Solo, and your Solo stubbornness isn’t going to make any of this easier.
Kyp? Your relationship with him is just as muddled as your relationship with Jag, but Kyp may be a lot less willing to accept and forgive than Jag is. You betrayed his trust, and now he doesn’t know whether to trust you or not. And that, itself, is a lack of trust. I wasn’t there much during Borleias or right afterwards, and I’ll admit it—I was jealous of your relationships with Jag and Kyp, because all three of you trusted each other so much.
What happened to that? What happened to the trust that all three of you built up? Even at the end of the war, I can remember Kyp being willing to do almost anything for your sake. He still is—even though he won’t acknowledge the fact—but he’s not going to do it for your sake anymore. He’ll do it because he feels that he owes your father a debt.
And don’t try to convince me that it was Killik war, Jaina. The war cut off your final link, but your relationship was deteriorating long before that. The war just brought it beyond the point of no return. You can keep bringing everyone close and then pushing them away, but, eventually, you’ll have pushed everyone away, and you’ll be alone. Is that what you want, Jaina. Are you going to sacrifice yourself, not to the dark side, but to misery and malcontent? Are you so determined to fulfill the prophecy that you’ve given up on yourself? I can only hope that you know the answer.
And as for me, well, just look at what happened the last time you went to the dark side. I ran away. It’s not because I didn’t want to help you—I would have done almost anything. Anything, that is, but going to the dark side. You’ve always had a big influence on me, and I was scared. I was scared of being dragged down that path, so I left. And, if you ever turn to the dark side again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to stay.
May the Force be with you, Jaina Solo.
Because, if you ever make that choice, I don’t know if I will be.

Any guesses on what Jag's "unconventional" strategy was?

It's nice to know that Jag and Jaina can still get on each other's nerves. LOL Great insight into Zekk's thoughts.
I have no clue what Jag came up with but I'll bet it's extremely good. Knowing him.
Great job!

Thanks for the comments!
Jag's little trick will come into play a lot more later, especially since Jaina still needs to figure out how to deal with it.
It's snowing! That means some teasers today and/or tomorrow and a post by Wednesday.

Hmm, interesting.
The J/J/Z love triangle seems to be one of the most talked-about topics of LotF, and you did quite a good job at putting in your own impression of it. Especially this:
Jag—he’s already done it once, and, even if he doesn’t talk about it much, I can see how much it took out of him, and that was when he still loved you. Now, you may call each other friends, may even call each other close friends, but there are too many buried and festering wounds for either of you to truly trust the other. It’s not about trusting the other to watch your back, or your life, but about trusting the other to do the right thing.
I don't believe the J/J shippers ever considered that, did they?
Seriously though, the dynamics of the characters in LotF are quite different than what they were in NJO, and you seem to do a pretty good job of capturing them in your story. Not bad at all.
Keep it up.

Thanks for the comments!
In writing this story, I have tried to avoid the J/J/Z triangle with Jag vs. Zekk, but instead focused on the individual relationships that make up this "triangle".
Next Post Tuesday, January 29: Jacen, a long-lost family member, and the introduction to our first major OC
Teaser:
Caedus cut off the flow of electricity. “Stand, Stimson, and give your report.”
Yub Stimson pulled himself from the floor and snapped to attention. He snapped off a meticulous salute.
Caedus returned it sloppily. “At ease, soldier.”
Stimson spread his legs slightly, but kept his back straight and his hands clasped behind his back.
Even now, you remind me of your brother when I first met him. The impressions are the same. If I did not know your brother to be elsewhere, I could have mistaken you to be he.
(The italics at the end are Jacen's thoughts.)

I wouldn't say that I am a Jacen hater, although he isn't my favorite character.
I don't tend to think of him as evil; rather, I see him as a weak person, where the Sith have taken advantage of that to establish control over him and twist his mind.
You won't get to see any fighting in the next scene, since it's still setting up some major plotlines for later in the story. However, you will get some nice Jacen combat scenes later on.
Post Later Today: Jacen, a long-lost familiy member, and an introduction to our first major OC

Here we go...
Chapter 2: Betrayal
“The more you see the less you know…” –“City of Blinding Lights” by U2
Corusant, GAG Headquarters
The lack of lighting in the room wouldn’t have allowed the man crouched before him to see more than a few faint shadows or outlines. However, with the Force on his side, Darth Caedus felt perfectly at home in the room. Sunlight had started to give him headaches nowadays, so he avoided light whenever possible. That, and he could feel the discomfort and fear of his supporters whenever they entered one of his purposely darkened room—the dark meant a lack of control, and lack of knowledge, and Caedus planned to keep it that way.
Their fear will keep them in line, he thought, and we will all be better off then. The fewer arguments and petty disputes they have, the more energy we can spend on keeping the galaxy at peace.
“Colonel, we were not able to retrieve her—” Yub Stimson began.
Darth Caedus glared at him. I will not allow my daughter to grow up in a galaxy full of war, he vowed silently. Allana will not have to kill in order to protect the galaxy. She will not have to go through the childhood I did. My daughter will know the peace that I did not.
Caedus allowed his bitterness and rage to envelop him, and a flash of dark purple and black lightning shot towards Stimson. The man writhed in pure agony, his screams animal like. As much as Darth Caedus wished that he could continue to punish the man for his failure, he knew that Stimson was by far the most qualified man for the job. He could feel, looking through Stimson’s thoughts, that the man knew it as well. Stimson knew, had calculated his own survival from this encounter. You are more like your brother than you realize. Stimson had perceived the importance of the mission given to him. Else, he could have run off like so many others, hoping to make a clean disappearance, rather than return to report his failure to the Sith Lord.
“Sir, we followed her to Tatooine. While she was in the spaceport, we caught a rendezvous with Fett. Our logs show that they left separately, but exited on the same hyperspace vector, so we suspect that they left for the same spot.”
Caedus wanted to blow up at the man, but he kept his actions in check. No matter what, it had to appear that he was deliberate and in control, even when he lost his temper. He could not lose face in front of his subordinates. They would not fear him if they believed they held any type of leverage or control over him.
“Why did you not capture him?” He was pleased to see that his voice came out cool, cutting, but angry.
The man didn’t even flinch. “We tried to follow them, sir, but Lraka, the idiot, put in the wrong coordinates, and we ended up at Kashyyyk.”
Caedus felt his ire rising, and he let another bolt of lighting hit the man in front of him. Stimson dropped to the floor but, this time, kept his jaws clenched together to keep from screaming.
Idiot! Caedus raged. He is willing to sacrifice this mission, sacrifice Allana, simply because he dislikes Lraka.
“Lieutenant Lraka is a skilled and able soldier! You will not attempt to foist your own mistakes off on him, and you will not allow petty rivalries to endanger your mission objectives. Is that clear, commander?”
“Clear,” Stimson managed between gasps.
So perhaps you’re not so much like your brother then. He endured pain far better, Caedus thought. I know perfectly well that it was Lraka’s fault, but he, unlike you, already fears me.
“Do not disappoint me again Stimson, or I can promise you that your punishment will be far worse.” Caedus kept his voice filled with cold, hard, anger. “You will continue on your mission to capture her. DEAD, if necessary. You will search for here, you will find her, and you will bring her in. Failure is not an option!”
Caedus took a slight step back and waved his hand towards the door. “You are dismissed, commander,” he said, as Yub Stimson flew out the door and the door slammed shut behind him.
So, he thought, you will indeed be a formidable enemy. But then, knowing your brother and your family, I would expect absolutely no less of you. And when the time comes for the twin battle foreshadowed by the Vong, you will serve as a hostage, no matter how much you try to prevent it. After all, you may think that I believe you are Yub Stimson, but I know your true identity.

So who is Jacen so determined to capture?

RE: The Face of a Warrior (LOTF post-Fury, Jaina, Jag, Zekk, Kyp, J/TK, H/L, Luke, OC's) TEASER #1 1

Here's a little teaser to keep you all occupied. I'll post up one more teaser tomorrow, and then a post on Friday.
Teaser:
She felt him stiffen, and his arms moved from her waist to her shoulders, turning her around so that he could look into her eyes, searching for the slightest hint that this might be all a joke. “I’m not playing with you,” she said softly, then stopped, feeling her resolve to keep herself from crying dissolving entirely. Those green eyes—would she ever see them again? She felt herself starting to sob, and he drew her into an embrace, her face buried into his chest.
And it's not who you think it is... (at least not in this chapter)

Jacen, Jacen, Jacen. I think someone needs some anger management classes.
Ooooo. I want it to be Jag, but I'm thinking I'm going to be disappointed.
Great chapter!

I don't want to give away any major spoilers, so all I'll say is that:
1). "The future is always in motion"
2). My teasers are formatted exactly as they will appear in the post (bold/italics/underline, parentheses, quotation marks, etc)
Here's another teaser
“Kalata is the center of the palm of the hand of the Goddess. At that point, her hand wraps around her sword. It is said that, when Kalata fades, the Goddess has drawn her sword, and the galaxy is at war. Should the Goddess and the light come out victorious, the sword shall once again be sheathed and the light of Kalata returned. If the Goddess loses, then the star Kalata shall disappear upon her loss.”
Next post tomorrow!
