Stupid Anakin. Didn't seem he was thinking with his head right there. tongue
I bet Tahiri is rather surprised that he knows her name and I'm guessing Intelligence files has nothing to do with it.

Great update. applause

Note: Here's Dummy's point of view. wink

Taking Prisoners

Anakin Solo hooked his thumbs behind his belt, and looked up at the stormtroopers standing on the roofs. Their perfect white armor shone almost painfully bright against the backdrop of the deep blue sky, and the black metal of their gun-barrels glittered and gleamed in the Tatooine light.

The Imperials had picked a good point for an ambush, Anakin admitted. Just ahead of him, the narrow alley took a sharp right-angled turn, with a two-story building blocking the straight progress of the street. As well as the usual enfilading fire-teams aiming down from the rooftops on either side, that meant there was a third squad of white boys standing on the roof directly in front of him, with four assault blasters leveled at him, and an officer in a smart gray uniform standing in the middle.

"Don't try anything stupid, Solo" the officer said. "We have your little girlfriend already." The man was hardly more than a silhouette against the blinding light, but Anakin could see that he was wearing a breastplate over his uniform, with a pistol on his hip—and he could hear the cruel tone in his voice.

Little girlfriend? He must mean Lee.

Anakin glanced at Tahiri, standing beside him. She was gazing up intently at the Imperial officer, and even though she seemed uncomfortable about all the blasters aimed down at them, there was a slight smirk on her lips. She was pleased to see him.

Anakin's eyes widened in shock, and the reality of the situation came home to him, like a punch in the guts from a Gamorrean. Here was the girl he'd been trying to find for the past ten years—and by the looks of things, she was a loyal Imperial now, grinning up like a brainwashed idiot at the officer on the rooftop.

"Tahiri!" he gasped.

He'd been really dumb. The Imperials must have known that he'd never truly forgotten her. They'd known they could use her against him. How many of his attempts to track her down had they found out about?

That didn't matter now. He'd fallen straight into the trap, following her without even asking why. He had been too busy trying to make sure if it really was her, or if his mind was playing tricks on him.

"Surrender!" the officer repeated.

Anakin turned slowly away from Tahiri, and looked back up at the Imperial. His eyes narrowed, and he began to put together a plan inside his head. "Or what?" he asked. "You kill Lee? And then where would you be?"

The officer paused, and Anakin danced quickly behind Tahiri's back, grabbing her around the neck with one arm, and jamming the muzzle of his blaster into her side.

"It's okay," he whispered in her ear. "All their guns are set to stun."

The officer tensed in alarm. Tahiri flashed with surprise in the Force, but for whatever reason, she didn't voice any objection.

Anakin almost grinned, glancing up at the officer for a moment, before looking back at her. "You can explain what the Imps did to you after we get out of this mess."

Now Tahiri did shoot him a worried side-glance. "How do you know they're on stun?"

Anakin answered by taking a few quick steps down the alley, so that his back wasn't as badly exposed to Imperial blasters. There were still two troopers on the right, but the ones ahead and to the left would have to fire through Tahiri to hit him.

He had a hunch they wouldn't do that.

Uh-huh. The Imperials seemed to be hesitating. That was good.

He turned, pulling Tahiri directly in front of him, and spun round to the right. His blaster was in his hand, and two shots sang out, guided by the Force.

Two stormtroopers dropped back on the roof, both shot in the face. With Tahiri serving as a human shield, they'd been the only ones with a clear line of fire towards Anakin.

"They want me alive, right?" he grinned, returning his blaster to her side.

"Yes, you," she answered, with a sideways glance. Her bright green eyes were beautifully serious.

Had she always had those flecks of black and gold lurking in her irises?

"How are you at deflecting stun-blasts with the Force?" he asked. "You'll be fine. They won't shoot you, because then I still have a shield if they do." He could hear a slight edge of uncertainty in his voice. "Imperial stormtroopers aren't meant to be that dumb."

"Uh... Okay, I guess," she said. He didn't have time to wonder whether she was talking about her own deflecting ability, or his analysis of the situation.

It didn't matter.

"Shoot them!!" the officer yelled. And the stormtroopers opened fire.

As Anakin had hoped, they were shooting to stun. He took a deep breath, and used the Force to dissipate the energy away from his body. Tahiri took most of the hits, but she was still on her feet, although she seemed a bit unsteady, suggesting that she hadn't quite managed to shield against the entire stun-charge.

"Imbeciles!" the officer yelled, his voice rising, sounding a little out of control—and worryingly young. Anakin's eyebrows went up, as the Imperial jumped down off the rooftop, flipping in a neat Jedi leap, and landing in the street in front of them.

He stood tall, and Anakin found himself looking into a very familiar face--handsome and cruel, with lips twisted into a wry sneer, and dark eyes that somehow shone with an inner light.

Anakin Solo looked hard at Jacen Skywalker. It took him a moment to realize that there was a red-bladed lightsaber in his elder brother's hands.

But Jacen wasn't paying him that much attention. He was gazing intently at Tahiri, using the Force to fill her with an urge to attack Anakin. The mental command was powerful enough for even Anakin to feel.

Tahiri hesitated. Her lips parted slightly.

And suddenly, a burst of blaster-fire cut through the air—but it wasn't from the Imperials. Dark-clothed men were standing further back across the rooftops, shooting at the Stormtroopers and Jacen. As a lightning-storm of blaster bolts cut through the air above the alleyway, white-armored bodies toppled off the roofs, and screams of pain pierced the rough shriek of illegal blaster rifles.

Anakin grinned. Whoever they were, their blasters weren't set on stun.

"What?!" Jacen demanded, twisting his lightsaber to catch the blaster-bolts they threw at him.

As Jacen spun to deflect weapons fire, Anakin grabbed Tahiri's hand, and dragged her away along the alley. "Run!"

She followed, shooting him an annoyed glance.

He could only grin in reply, running hand-in-hand with Tahiri down dusty Mos Eisley streets, snaking along zig-zag back-lanes, and then barging through the crowds in the busy squares. It was just like back when they were kids.

There was no time to look back and see if anyone was on their tail. But Anakin knew where he was going, and Tahiri seemed to be following him instinctively, just like he'd followed her into the Imp trap earlier.

I guess the Force-bond still works both ways.

"Quick!" he yelled, slowing and darting sideways towards a door. "In here!"

Tahiri blinked at him, and tried to stop, looking slightly confused—but still disorientingly cute—now. "What's in there?"

In answer, he just dragged her into the open doorway. Tahiri tumbled inside after him, then pulled her hand away from his, and looked around—gazing up in slight disbelief at storage racks piled high with cargo pods—some as small as suitcases, a few as big as speeder-trucks, but most of them about two or three meters long on every side.

Ahead of them, a maze of corridors led away through the warehouse.

Anakin gave her his best Solo grin. "Lots of hiding places."

Tahiri looked at him, wry and skeptical. "Why would we hide?" She narrowed her eyes. "What about the others?"

Anakin answered by stepping behind her, and pressing the muzzle of his blaster into her side again. "We hide because there's a firefight going on," he said, suddenly somber. "And we need to talk." He didn't want to discuss the question of which side they should be on until he felt a little more secure.

Tahiri turned her head, and offered him a wry and doubtful look. But maybe there was a hint of fondness in it, too.

"This way." Anakin ignored her pout, picked out a cargo pod that looked promising, and nudged her towards it.

She obeyed. He wondered if it was because of the gun against her ribs, or the fact she liked being with him.

She wrinkled her nose at his chosen cargo pod. "What's so good about this one?"

"Sensor shielding. Internal life-support. Perfect." Anakin pulled open the hatch, and nudged her with the gun. "Ladies first."

Tahiri got inside without complaint.

Anakin followed, and shut the door behind them.

Wow, that was really good having the brothers meet face to face. It seems Anakin thinks of Jacen as an Imp, but not a dark sider. This is quite the mystery and gets me going more than the story itself. But that is not to say the story is not good...it's engrossing, but I'm just very into the character dynamic right now.

Good update! applause

Note: Answers coming soon. But thanks to all of you. hugs

Close Range

Tahiri heard the door closing behind her, and found herself trapped in utter darkness.

For a moment, she'd had a glimpse of an empty space, about the size and shape of a big toilet cubicle—the sort that had a hand-basin as well as a 'fresher.

Now, there was just blackness.

Tahiri tensed, her spine straightening, but after a moment, she relaxed. The dark was soft, comfortable, warm. It was familiar, although she couldn't say quite what it reminded her of—and even though Anakin Solo was standing right behind her.

She turned around, folding her arms, a wry look on her face, even if she was sure he wouldn't be able to appreciate it. "Now what?"

Anakin ignored her question. "Hey, Tahiri. It's been a while, hasn't it?"

"I guess..." she answered, half-heartedly. She was concentrating on situation assessment, using the Force to take in her surroundings. "So what have you been doing? And what's the plan now?"

Keep him talking. Keep him busy. It will make things much easier.

The boy seemed to have an unnatural urge to share things with strangers. It was his weakness, and hopefully her advantage.

"We wait until they've stopped looking," he said. "The Imperials won't risk a long deployment here."

Before he could add anything else, Tahiri reached out with one hand, and Force-pulled the blaster out of his grip.

At least, that had been the plan-but Anakin Solo failed to let go of the gun. So instead of catching a pistol in her hand, she got ninety kilos of Corellian male crashing into her, slamming her back against the wall.

She grimaced slightly in pain, then tried to push him away, frowning in annoyance. It wasn't the first time he'd made her feel incompetent that morning, either. This guy was bad news.

"Hey!!" he protested. "What did you do that for?!"

"You were pointing a gun at me!" She pressed her hands to his chest and pushed him firmly away from her.

"I was just pleased to see you!" he answered, stumbling back and sounding amused.

"Very funny," she answered, turning round to face the door. All she could see was the memory-speckled ebony of utter darkness, but she knew there would be a lock here somewhere.

There was a noise behind her. Anakin had taken a step towards her. She felt herself tense, squaring her shoulders.

"Hey," he whispered. "Don't go out there just yet. Dammit."

Tahiri didn't answer, feeling across the flat surface in front of her with the palms of her hands until she found the lock. There were standard Imperial over-ride codes that ought to work on a civilian module like this.

Silently, she wondered if Anakin had forgotten that they were on different sides in this, already. The Intelligence files said his father could be insane, and the son might have inherited the condition.

She had just tried to get him captured and here they were, hiding from... she wasn't even sure who. The more she kept thinking about it, the more awkward and absurd the situation seemed.

No, I'm not gonna start feeling bad about this!

"Tahiri?" he asked again. He sounded genuinely concerned.

"I can take care of myself," she hissed at him, stubbornly trying to open the door.

It didn't.

"Yeah, well, not even a proper hello for a friend you've not seen in ten years?" He sounded disappointed, but she had no intention of wasting time working out what he wanted. He was just a target. An especially annoying one, in fact, who had made her look like an idiot in front of Jacen and her own troops.

The least she could do was to get him back to them. Maybe then the punishment wouldn't be too severe—although she knew she needed disciplining for the mess she'd already made.

Tahiri turned to Anakin, and drew herself up straight like the stormtrooper officer she was—full of newfound resolve. "What's the door code?"

His answer wasn't exactly what she expected—even from a crazy Rebel idiot.

"Sith!" he hissed, sounding worried.

"What?!" She looked into the darkness where he was standing, not sure what was wrong.

She could almost imagine him rolling his eyes as he spoke. "I think I just locked us in here."

Tahiri sighed. "Great!" She frowned and looked at him again. "You're serious about this?"

"Yeah. Still, I guess we have time to catch up now." In the Force, she felt him looking back at her. "Do you want to be the captor for a bit?"

"What?" She wasn't sure whether she wanted to laugh or scream.

Instead, she pressed her forehead against the wall: cold, flat metal. That, at least, was something solid and reassuring, for a stormtrooper officer trapped in a darkened box with Han Solo's son.

She didn't want to lose her mind.

She tried to concentrate, and reached out for Jacen. She found his Force-presence quickly enough, but getting his attention wasn't as easy.

At least the Solo boy was silent now.

On second thought, though, she wasn't sure if that was a good thing. He might be thinking about doing something really dumb.

Her thoughts went back to Jacen and she tried to nudge him to pay her attention. She knew he was all right. He seemed relatively calm, so she didn't understand what the problem was. It almost felt as if he was ignoring her on purpose.

That was impossible, of course. Jacen was always there for her. But she was growing more and more frustrated...

Suddenly she felt an arm around her shoulders, and heard Anakin's worried voice. "You okay?"

That was more than she could handle. She spun round, knocking his arm away, and yelled: "What kind of idiot are you?! How are we supposed to get out of here?!"

Anakin took a step back.

Phew. That feels better. Tahiri almost grinned to herself.

"Well... maybe I can hotwire this thing. " He moved past her towards the door. By the sound of things, he was fumbling around the door with his hands now, searching for the lock—doing what she'd done five minutes ago. "You got a light?"

"No."

It was so dumb, she almost felt like laughing.

"Great. Don't they teach Force-sensitives anything in the Empire?"

The almost-grin died on Tahiri's face, and she glared into the darkness at him. "What am I supposed to have learned? Creating glow-rods?" Who did this impertinent little womp-rat think he was, talking about the Empire's training like that? What had the Jedi Masters taught him, except how to get killed stupidly?! "Why don't you come up with something, genius?!"

That seemed to shut him up, even though she thought she felt a flicker of amusement from him for a moment.

It still didn't solve the problem how they would get out of there, though. She growled and sat down, leaning against one of the walls.

"Anyway, why am I trying to do this yet," Anakin said, his wristwatch lighting up a tiny area around his arm while he checked it. The glow moved closer as he stepped away from the doors and sat down beside her. She could just see the outline of his face.

She raised her eyebrows at him.

He inclined his head slightly. "Let's wait until fourteen hundred... and you can tell me what you've been up to."

"Or I could tell you to kriff off?" Tahiri answered, giving him a nasty smirk.

He seemed oddly taken aback by it, as if he didn't expect something like that from her.

Suddenly she felt bad again, and then mad. Mad at him, at herself, at Jacen, and at the whole Galaxy.

Why was she even in here, talking to this lunatic?! She was an Imperial officer, a Force-sensitive trained by Lord Skywalker himself!

Tahiri frowned, and tried to remember exactly why she had followed Anakin. It definitely ranked among the most stupid things she had ever done.

"I've missed you, you know?" Anakin said, close and quiet beside her. It was her turn to fall silent. Even her thoughts trailed off. He was saying the weirdest things—things that were making her feel uncomfortable.

The enclosed space seemed even smaller now—and warmer.

She needed to get out.

She hoped that small-talk would distract him again—and give her time to reach Jacen.

"Sure," she replied with a wry snort.

"Sure," he echoed, and sounded as if he meant it.

The walls seemed to be closing in on her. She took a couple of deep breaths and reached out with the Force—but all she got was polite ignorance from Jacen. A frustrated sigh escaped her lips.

"You don't like enclosed spaces? Or the dark?" Anakin asked her, sounding worried.

"I don't like being stuck in here," she said sharply. Then she paused, and added: "Do you think someone will come for you?"

"Should do, if I know Uncle L—... never mind." He paused, and even in the darkness, she knew he was looking straight at her. "They say that another body helps with the claustrophobia. Come here?"

"Huh? I don't suffer from claustrophobia." Stubbornly, she stayed where she was.

He shifted closer anyway, and sat beside her, putting his arm around her shoulder. "They say it's the contrast between the closeness and the space that helps, the warmth and cold."

"Are you trying to hit on me?!" she asked, attempting to sound annoyed, but finding it hard to stifle a laugh.

That had to be one of the worst pick-up lines she had ever heard....

"You didn't seem to have a problem with it in the bar?" he answered, grinning, then he grew serious again. "Or did the Empire put you somewhere like this?"

"Why don't you tell me something about yourself instead of interrogating me?" she shot back.

"Sensitive subject. Okay...."

There was a slightly awkward pause, which became a shared silence. She could feel the warmth of him now, the weight of his body leaning against her side, the embrace of his arm around her shoulder.

It didn't mean anything, of course—it was just practical and physical, like his silly chat-up line had claimed. But she had to admit that it was kinda nice. It was comfy, and that wasn't something she got to enjoy all that often.

She listened to his breathing, and to the heartbeat she could feel inside his chest.

"How much do you remember?" he asked, eventually.

She sighed. "Of what?" What was he talking about?!

"Of me."

"I remember as much as I need to," she replied—which meant nothing at all.

All she needed to know was that the Empire had rescued her from the Rebellion. She knew she had a debt of gratitude to repay by serving in the Starfleet, but she also had a life of her own now—she wasn't just canon-fodder for a worthless cause.

She was Jacen's girlfriend, as well as his most trusted aide. She was proud of what she'd become. The Empire had given her far more than she could have ever hoped for in the childhood she'd forgotten.

But she'd known Anakin Solo when they were younger? That explained his weird behavior—a bit, anyway.

Maybe she could use that, too. She smiled slightly at him. "Look, what are you going to do with me if your people find us here? What are you going to tell them?"

"I hadn't thought of anything except the truth... but I guess I can cover for you."

She resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow. "Why would you?"

"Why not?"

She frowned. This was crazy. "Because... I tried to... you know..."

Why was her heart beating fast?

"You'd just let me go?"

Anakin took a deep breath. "I'm not convinced there's any value in holding you against your will."

She blinked, and for a moment, she wasn't sure what to say.

She smiled wryly. "I think your people would disagree..."

He nodded. "They do, sometimes. They don't have to know." She felt his arm tighten around her shoulders as he spoke, his body rubbing up close alongside hers.

She could use this, she told herself. This wasn't a chance she could pass up—not after the latest failure.

Anakin grinned. "Or you could come back?"

Tahiri just sighed, defeated by his behavior. She could feel his breath on her cheek, warm and soft against her skin—as comforting as the shared darkness.

"Come back?" she asked.

She was very aware of how close he was to her now. It made her feel a little nervous.

She hadn't been trained for situations like this. She tried hard to relax in his embrace, while keeping her mind focused on the mission.

"Back to the Rebellion," Anakin explained. "We don't have much to offer, I guess." Then he paused, as if he'd just realized something. "What did the Empire want with me?"

"They didn't tell me."

"Well, what did they do with you?" he asked, releasing his embrace—but only so he could comb his fingers through her hair. "After they captured you?"

"Nothing... Why?" She sat very still—not daring to move.

Anakin sounded puzzled, but his fingers didn't break their rhythm in her hair. "Nothing? But you changed sides. Joined the Empire...."

Tahiri shrugged, as he moved his hand down to the back of her neck, and combed out hair. She didn't often get the chance to wear it down like this. She smiled and turned slightly towards him, as if to shake his hand away.

"So?" she asked.

"So, what's it like?" She could almost see the smile. "What sort of training was it? What do you do?"

She smiled back. So this was the Rebel idea of interrogation, was it? It was more fun than a proper one, but she wasn't planning to break.

"Why are you part of the Rebellion?" she asked instead. "What do you do?"

"Good questions," Anakin conceded. "I guess I've always been a Rebel, huh. Born into it."

She just stared at him, completely defeated.

"We... try to help," he went on. "And the Empire doesn't seem to like that."

"You try to help who?"

"People? Freedom? We're as much smugglers as fighters these days." His grin was bright enough that she could see it in the dark. "Blame Dad?"

"And..." Anakin leaned closer, cupping one hand to her ear, and whispered. "Interrogating each other's fun, isn't it?"

"No, it's not," she lied. Shifting round on her butt, she turned her face towards him—and found them bumping noses.

Anakin grinned, and she pulled back.

"Yes it is," he teased, sitting back confidently. "Agent? Lieutenant?"

Tahiri just sighed. "How much longer do you think they'll be?"

She forced herself to concentrate, and reached out to Jacen again. Beside her, Anakin checked his watch.

"Okay," he said. "Time to go, I guess."

"To go where?" She frowned.

"Out of here," he answered. If she hadn't known him better, he would have sounded like he knew what he was doing.

"And how do we do that?"

"Stand back!" he said—and a blaster bolt zapped past her, illuminating the darkness for a moment as it sizzled into the center of the door.

Tahiri frowned, and the lock clicked open.

Anakin kicked the hatch open with his foot, and weighed his blaster in his hand.

Tahiri sighed again. "Great," she breathed, shielding her eyes against the bright shaft of light.

"Fancy electronic lock," Anakin beamed at her. "Stun-beams work like ion bolts. Big design flaw when you're trying to keep cargo safe."

She gave him a rueful look and tried her best not to smile. "You should know, huh?"

Anakin gave her a winning grin. "Like I said, smugglers as much as freedom fighters. I guess we do it because it's fun, if that answers your earlier question."

She rolled her eyes, stood up, and stepped outside.

She watched as he climbed out after her. A handsome scoundrel. Not her type. Even if he didn't smell too bad.

"So I can go now?" she asked, with a doubtful look.

"If you want." He looked disappointed. Well, that was his problem.

Tahiri was just mad at Jacen for ignoring her. What was he playing at?

She blinked. "Why would I stay?"

Anakin shrugged. "You might like it? I know I would."

Tahiri smirked, and stepped closer to him. She lifted her gaze to meet his, noticing the height difference between them properly for the first time.

"Yeah?" she asked. She was enjoying this.

Anakin nodded. "Yeah. Unquestionably." He looked down at her and smiled into her eyes. "So, do you want to do this as an Imperial defector, or as a new friend I just made today?"

She grinned, and grabbed his blaster, using a sharp blow to his wrist to back up the Force-pull.

That worked.

Grinning, she leveled the blaster at him.

He raised his hands in an out-and-up gesture. "You got me." He was grinning at her—far more than he should, considering the situation.

She sneered down the barrel of the gun at him—trying to hide her worry. "Why don't we try a third option?"

"Sure," he smiled. "What is it?"

She gave him a taut, fake smile. "You come with me."

He laughed gently. "Back to the Empire? No thanks." Then he gestured in her general direction. "Besides, you'd have to get past the Rebel commando squad in the doorway behind you...."

She heard the sound of safety-catches being snapped back on blasters, the distinctive rustling noise carbines' slings made when you lifted them up to fire.

Lieutenant Tahiri Veila clenched her teeth, and lowered her gaze for a moment. She felt like a total failure.

Sure, Jacen would probably show up to rescue her, but she'd be on punishment duty for a month. She took pride in her training, and she enjoyed the sense of Jacen's approval, but she didn't like being disciplined—it hurt, and it meant she'd failed at something.

Tahiri lifted her eyes again, and looked at Anakin as he stepped up and disarmed her. She practically handed him the gun.

He grinned apologetically "By the way... there is no commando team."

There was the electric blue flash of a blaster stun-bolt at close range. There was no pain, but suddenly, she was dropping to the ground like she was diving in zero-gee.

Anakin dropped quickly to one knee, and caught her before she hit the floor.

"Easy there," he said, cradling her gently. She just gazed up dumbly at his handsome face. "Now, come on. Let's get you back to the ship..."

Anakin's a sly dog eh? Hmmm wonder what's going to happen next between those two, I wonder on how Jacen's going to react to Tahiri in the enemy's hands. Good work can't wait for more.
