Chapter 1
Star Destroyer Anakin Solo, Coruscant System, en route to Crix Madine Military Reserve

"Colonel Solo, this is Lieutenant Tebut. We have a sensor contact."

Darth Caedus’s eyes snapped open as the crackle of the comm brought him out of his healing trance. While some repairs had been conducted following the Anakin Solo’s escape from Kashyyyk, the damage that remained caused more distortion than usual on the comm line.

Without sitting up, Caedus used the Force to activate the comm panel near his bunk. "This had better be good, Lieutenant."

Even with the interference, Tebut’s nervousness was apparent. "Sorry to disturb you, sir. The contact matches the ship that Lieutenant Skywalker retrieved."

That got Caedus’s attention. He knew that the ship had disappeared from Terephon following Lumiya’s death, but had no idea whether someone else had taken it or whether it felt her death and left the planet on its own. "Has it communicated with us yet?"

"No, sir."

"Direct it to land in the flag hangar," Caedus ordered. Not waiting for her response, he closed the comm channel and reached out with the Force. He quickly found both the meditation sphere and its pilot. "Alema Rar, I should have guessed." He used the Force to send the same instructions to Alema as he had told Tebut to deliver.

Getting out of bed, more slowly than usual because of his injuries, Caedus quickly got dressed and grabbed a vibroblade and his blaster out of the cabinet he used as a makeshift armory. His hand reached to where he usually stored his lightsaber, but it wasn’t there.

Of course. Ben took it with him when he escaped. Caedus reminded himself. He secured the cabinet and walked to the hangar, keenly feeling the absence of the blade he had used for almost twenty years.

Seconds after he entered the hangar, the distinctive orange sphere passed through the atmospheric containment field and settled to the deck between his Stealth-X and assault shuttle. As soon as its hatch opened, Alema limped her way out, holding something in her good arm.

"I’m surprised to see you again, Alema. Do you remember what I told you the last time we met?" Caedus asked, one hand resting on the hilt of his vibroblade.

"We serve the Balance with our life and death, but you should show us some gratitude," Alema told him. We are the ones who saved your life."

"What? You aren’t powerful enough for that," Caedus responded.

Alema managed to look vaguely offended. "We may not be, but Ship is."

Ah, that explains it, Caedus thought. "And what is that in your hand?"

"It is a Sith holocron we found. We thought you might find it useful," Alema replied, extending the holocron, which had been wrapped in some kind of cloth.

"It and you, I suppose," Caedus responded, taking the holocron. She’s too unstable to be useful, but if Jaina traces her here, they could figure things out before I’m ready.

"If that is what you want," Alema replied with a smile.

I want her dead, but can’t afford for her to die here. Caedus didn’t reply, taking a moment to collect his thoughts. "I want you to kill Boba Fett for me. Can you do that?"

The appeal to her pride clearly worked. "We are an expert at killing without being detected."

"Watch out for Jaina."

"We know that she is hunting us and are not concerned. Jaina and her lust toads couldn’t find an albino gundark if it was in the same room," Alema laughed.

"Underestimating my sister is a mistake few of her enemies have lived to regret, Alema," Caedus replied, seriously. "And leave the meditation sphere here. I’ll provide you with a stealth vessel."

"We would prefer to take Ship," Alema told him, backing towards the meditation sphere.

"And I would like to learn more about it. I need to learn more about battle meditation to win this war. Don’t worry, I’ll let you have it back when you return," Jacen replied. "For now, stay in the hangar. I don’t want any of my crew to see you."

"We will wait," Alema replied.

Either way, I win. If Alema kills Fett, I don’t have to worry about him any more. If he kills her, then her death can’t be traced to me, Caedus thought as he walked out of the hangar.

Rwookrrorro, Kashyyyk
Outside the window of the conference room, smoke hung over Rwookrrorro. While the Wookies were, by necessity, skilled in handling forest fires, the bombardment by the Anakin Solo had stretched them past the breaking point. With the help of the Hapan fleet, they were forced to burn even more of the forest, creating firebreaks to protect the inhabited areas that were threatened but had not already been engulfed in flames. Luke’s attention turned from the window to the door that had just been thrown open.

"Sorry we’re late," Leia blurted as she and Han entered the room, taking seats among the assembled Jedi.

"That’s okay," Luke said. "First, I talked with Tojjelnoot, and he said that we can stay here on Kashyyyk for now. I still want to find a more secure place for the students, but in the short term, Kashyyyk should be safe enough. The Wookies have mobilized their fleet and are keeping an eye out for Galactic Alliance forces."

"You should be safe for now," Tenel Ka said, matter of fact as always. "With me withdrawing the use of my fleets, they will have to consolidate their forces. I would offer you protection on Hapes, but there is no chance that your presence there would remain secret."

"Thanks for your offer, Tenel Ka. All the same, the sooner we can find somewhere else to hide them, the better. Corran, do you think that Mirax could fly us to the Errant Venture? I want Ben to go with me and he hasn’t flown a Stealth X before."

"What about the Jade Shadow?" Cighal asked. They had used every ship they had available to evacuate the temple on Coruscant, including the Shadow, which had not been used since before Mara’s death.

The emotional pain Luke had been feeling since Mara’s death rose to the surface. "I’m not ready for that yet," he said, struggling to keep his composure. And I'm not sure if I ever will be. It was always Mara's ship.

"I take it that you want to have the students stay on the Venture again?" Corran asked. "Mirax probably won’t have any problem with flying you out there, but I can ask her as soon as we are done here."

"Thanks, Corran. Until we find a safer place for the students, I want most of you and the Knights to stay here on Kashyyyk to help defend the planet if the Alliance does return and to help take care of the fires," Luke said. "Once the students are safe, we should be able to take a more active role in removing Jacen from power and ending the war."

"Tenel Ka, I’ve been wondering something these past few days. Do you know why Jacen jumped to the conclusion that we were threatening Allana?" Leia asked, abruptly changing the subject.

The Queen Mother didn’t reply immediately and Jaina noticed something before Tenel Ka answered. "Jacen and I have been friends for a long time, and he spent some time protecting her when the Heritage Council attempted their coup."

Luke saw a reaction from Jaina, but before she could say anything, her father did.

"That’s not all, is it?" Han asked.

"What makes you think that, Captain Solo?" Tenel Ka’s voice was level, but shock was evident on her face.

"I may not have played Sabacc for high stakes recently, but I still recognize a tell when I see one," he replied.

Tenel Ka took a moment to regain her composure. "I would prefer to discuss that with you after the meeting."

"Whatever you say, kid," Han told her.

Luke saw a flash of anger on Jaina's face before she clamped down on her feelings.

"Leia, I have a mission that I would like you to take care of. It calls for your specific talents," Luke told her, bringing the meeting back on topic.

"Let me guess, some kind of diplomatic mission," Han commented, rolling his eyes.

Kenth Hamner was the one who responded. "With the Hapans pulling out of the Alliance, we think that both they and the Confederation will be making a concentrated effort to bring the Empire into the war."

"I see where you are coming from. The first step in stopping the war is to keep it from getting any bigger. I have no problem with talking with Gilad and the rest of the Imperial Ruling Council," Leia said.

"Jaina, I’d like you and Jag to go with them in case Alema shows up," Luke told her.

"What about Zekk?" Jaina asked.

"The students need a familiar face and Tionne isn’t in any condition to work with them right now," he said. While Cilghal and Tekli had made a good deal of progress, Tionne’s physical and emotional wounds from the attack on Ossus were far from healed. "Your parents seem to be Alema's main targets, and while they can take care of themselves, you and Jag are familiar with her methods."

"Zekk might not like it much, but he’ll understand," she replied.

"The last topic we need to discuss is Tahiri," Luke continued.

"What is there to discuss?" Leia asked. "She sided with Jacen."

"We need to figure out why she decided to side with him. He deceived us for long enough. Maybe she just hasn’t realized how far he’s fallen yet," Corran reasoned. Of the masters, he probably knew her best, having worked with her in the later stages of the Vong War.

"She was here when the bombardment started. That should have told her everything she needed to know about what he has become," Han said, surprisingly more restrained than Leia had been. "But that didn’t stop her from saying that Anakin would have wanted her to stay with Jacen."

"When Captain Solo mentioned Anakin, I felt Tahiri’s reaction through the Force," Tenel Ka responded. "It didn’t feel like sadness. It was more like obsession."

"We should talk to her partners to see if they noticed the same thing," Corran suggested. "If we can figure out when her behavior started changing, it might help us understand what is happening to her."

"Corran, you would probably be the best person to handle that," Kyp said. "Of course, I know you’d miss the chance to spend some quality time with Booster."

Everyone, even Corran laughed at that.

"I would be happy to take care of it," Corran replied when the laughter had died down.

"All right then," Luke concluded. "If no one else has anything they want to talk about, we're done here."

Everyone but Tenel Ka, Han, and Leia stood to leave the room.

"Master Skywalker, Jaina, please stay," Tenel Ka asked. "This is something that the two of you should know as well." She waited until the door closed behind the last of the Jedi Masters.

"We should have told you this years ago, but I was concerned about word getting to my nobles. Allana is Jacen’s daughter."

The room fell silent for what seemed like minutes before Leia spoke softly. "She’s our granddaughter?" Before Tenel Ka could answer, Leia crossed the room and embraced her. "You loved him, didn’t you?" From where she was sitting, Jaina could see tears running down her mother’s face.

Surprised, Tenel Ka returned the embrace with her single arm. "That is a fact."

"I wish none of this had happened and the three of you could have been together," Leia said through her tears, releasing the embrace.

Mara thought Jacen might have been the father, Luke thought. It looks like she was right… as usual.

"Did you ever plan to tell us?" Jaina insisted, surprising everyone in the room with the outburst. Luke saw her mother wince at Jaina's tone, but it didn't stop her from continuing. "You should know us well enough to recognize that we never would have said anything to your nobles about it."

"I am sorry, Jaina. Some, Hapan nobles are not stupid. If I was getting constant visits from Solos, they would have eventually jumped to the right conclusion."

"But with as often as Jacen disappeared for a few days, it's obvious that he visited you regularly. Weren't you worried about them figuring it out from that?"

"Aren't you happy to find out that you have a niece, Jaina?" Luke asked, interrupting her tirade.

"Yes, but I should have found out about her five years ago," Jaina demanded, almost yelling. "Tenel Ka even put Allana's life at risk to keep the secret. After the assassination attempt, I offered to guard Allana for her, but she refused to let me and Zekk anywhere near her."

"That was a mistake," Tenel Ka admitted. "I almost told you two months ago after the coup attempt, but with everything that happened, it did not feel like the right time."

"Something was always going to come up, wasn't it? Jacen told you to keep it secret, didn't he?" Jaina got to her feet. "I don't have anything else to say to you."

Tenel Ka stood up as well and got in Jaina's way as she walked to the door. "Jaina, wait. It was my decision. The first attempt on Allana's life was when she was only months old. It is dangerous enough for her to be my child without anyone on Hapes other than me knowing who her father is. I did not feel that I could risk her life by letting anyone else know. I have not even told my own father"

Jaina sidestepped and stormed out of the room.

"When you keep a secret, you don’t kriff around, do you?" Han asked, having taken the time to process the revelation. "I thought the reason you weren’t letting anyone see Allana was because of a birth defect or she had an ugly father or something."

Luke could feel a hint of a smile play across his face at Han's comment.

"Now that we know, can we meet her?" Han asked.

"The mission to Bastion is time sensitive, but after that, if Tenel Ka agrees, you can spend as much time on Hapes as you want," Luke decided.

"I do not see any reason to stop you and doubt that I could even if I said no," Tenel Ka said. "You do have a right to see her, even though I made the mistake of not telling you about her sooner. All four of you are welcome whenever you want."

"You’ve got that right. Just tell her not to call me ‘grandpa’. It would make me feel old," Han joked, trying to relieve more of the tension in the room.

"Does Allana know that Jacen is her father?" Luke asked.

"No, Master Skywalker. I have not told her. She knows Jacen as my friend, and that is all she will know him as."

"She deserves to know who her father is," he replied softly. I don't want her to find out who her father is the same way I did. No one deserves that.

"Perhaps you are right, but she is still too young to understand," Tenel Ka replied, refusing to back down. "Maybe once Jacen is no longer a threat."

"Do you think he will try to kidnap her?" Luke asked.

"Absolutely," Leia said. "At this point, I wouldn’t put anything past him, and now that he thinks Tenel Ka betrayed him, it’s only a matter of time."

"You’re probably right. Tenel Ka, would you like me to send some Jedi back with you to protect Allana?" Luke asked.

"Yes," she answered.

"How about Lowie and Tesar?" he suggested.

"They are good choices," Tenel Ka said. "I would be honored to have them help protect my daughter."

Good Story. I hope that you show Jacen's reasons for going sith to the others. Also, show his issues with his love for his family and his duty as a GAG and a Sith. also...dont show him stupid/weak coz he's not. I really hope that you develop Tahiri's character. Update soon.

Wow...this is one of the best stories I have read on here, and that's only after the first chapter! I love how you portray the characters and explained things that some...duller people wouldn't understand. Great post and if you have a PM list please add me!

I plan on having him explain it, but they aren't going to be sure that he's Sith until towards the end of the story.
As you can already see from the first chapter, I'm going to be showing how manipulative he is, and I have no intention of making him look weak.
And finally, yes, Tahiri is going to play a very major role in the story. Her first appearance is in chapter 3 and it will more fully explain why she's on Jacen's side.

Thanks for the compliment.
I have an eye for detail, so I like to make sure that the little details I'm including references to are understood.
You're added to the PM list.

I plan on updating every Friday, though that could vary a bit depending on whether I have time and stuff like that.

This is very cool, if I haven't already said so grin You did a really amazing job portraying Caedus exactly like canon (scary amazing -- are you really Aaron Allston? tongue ) and the scene with Tenel Ka and the S/S was both sad and sweet.

Awesome start grin

Chapter 2

Pulsar Skate, en route to Elshandruu Pica
"Ben, why did you want to kill Jacen?" Luke asked in their small cabin on the Pulsar Skate.

Ben turned to look at his father, before rolling his eyes as he sat on his bunk. "You mean beyond the fact that he tortured me?"

The matter of fact tone of Ben’s answer shook Luke, but his response was full of compassion. "Was that the reason?"

"No. I brought that on my self when I tried killing him on the bridge."

All of Luke’s Jedi training couldn’t keep the shock from his face. He tried to respond to that, but no words came out of his mouth.

"He killed Mom, Dad. I can’t prove it, but I know he did," Ben said, radiating sincerity.

"Why would he do that? Your mother supported him, even when I thought he was starting to go too far." He has done some things I can't condone, but I can't believe that he would kill Mara.

"Because…" Luke heard the hitch in Ben’s voice. "Because I heard him talking to Lumiya in his office."

Everything clicked into place in Luke’s mind. "Why didn’t she tell me who she was hunting? If she’d told me, we would have confronted him together and she’d be alive now."

When he heard that, tears flooded down Ben’s cheeks. "Dad, I asked Mom not to tell you. I was embarrassed that I had trusted him, and now it’s my fault that she’s dead."

"I’m sorry, Ben," Luke told him crossing the room to wrap Ben in a tight embrace, feeling him shudder as he continued to cry. "I didn’t mean it that way."

They stayed that way for several minutes, sharing their grief over Mara’s death until Ben pulled away from Luke.

"Killing Jacen won’t bring Mara back," Luke said as Ben worked to regain his composure.

"I know that, Dad," Ben told him, wiping tears from his eyes. "But we can’t let it go unpunished."

"Even with what you told me, it still might not have been him. We know that he was working with Lumiya and Alema was working with Lumiya. It would make sense if they were working together too. Despite everything he may or may not have done, if you kill him out of revenge, you will become him, and I don't want that."

Before Ben could respond to that, Mirax’s voice crackled over the intercom. "We’re preparing to drop out of hyperspace."

"Do you want to go up to the cockpit with me, Ben?" Luke asked.

"No thanks, Dad," Ben said.

"Do you want me to stay here with you?"

Ben shook his head. "I’m not a kid any more, Dad. You don’t have to keep an eye on me all the time."

"All right. Just let me know if you need anything." Luke stood up and started walking to the door.

"We’re going to be on the Venture in ten minutes, Dad," Ben replied with a small grin, seeming like a normal fourteen year old for just a moment. "I think I can stay out of trouble for that long."

Luke returned the grin. "Well, with who your parents are, I doubt it." With that, he left the guest quarters and walked up to the cockpit.

"…this is the Pulsar Skate," Mirax finished over the comm as Luke entered the cockpit.

"Hello, Mirax," Booster’s distinctive voice boomed over the comm. "We’re clearing a flight path to my private hangar now. Are my grandchildren with you?"

"No, dad, they’re both on assignments. I’ll tell you all about it once we get aboard," Mirax said to her father. They had agreed to not mention that Luke was on the Skate until they were aboard just in case someone was listening in.

"All right then. You’re cleared for landing." Booster closed the comm channel.

Mirax approached the underside of the red Star Destroyer with practiced efficiency and landed in the flag hangar near a single X-wing that Luke guessed was Wedge’s.

"It looks like Wedge and Iella are here to greet us," Luke said, checking a display that showed them standing outside the ship.

"That’s good," Mirax responded as she shut down the Skate’s engines. "I’m sure that you have a lot to talk about with them."

Between the two of them, they quickly finished powering down the ship before exiting the ship, getting Ben on the way past his cabin.

"Good to see you again, Wedge, Iella," Luke said, extending his hand.

"Booster lined up quarters for the two of you, but I have something I want to talk to you about first, Luke," Wedge told him, shaking his hand. "Iella can take Ben there now."

"Go ahead, Dad," Ben said to Luke when Luke turned to say something. "You guys have been friends a lot longer than I’ve been alive, and if it’s something I need to know, you can tell me later." He hoisted his bag and followed Iella out of the hangar.

The two men discussed a few things, but none of them too significant until they reached Wedge and Iella’s quarters. As soon as the door hissed shut behind them, Wedge turned to Luke. "Don’t worry. Iella sweeps the room for bugs every day."

"I figured that between the two of you, Myri, and Booster, there was no chance of your room being bugged," Luke said, taking a seat in one of the chairs in the common area of the luxury quarters.

"Well, it was mostly Iella. Myri’s been too busy making money as a dealer in one of the casinos on Diamond Level and taking note of anything interesting said at her table." Wedge sat on another chair facing his old friend.

"Has she heard anything useful?" Luke asked.

"Useful to us? Not really. Some of what she’s heard has been useful to Booster though," Wedge replied with a grin. As soon as the moment of levity was over, he turned serious. "Ever since I heard about what Jacen did at Kashyyyk, there’s something that’s been poking at the edge of my mind. Remember Borleias?"

"How could I forget? We held out for a lot longer than I thought we would and…" suddenly Luke’s voice trailed off. "Are you suggesting…"

Wedge cut him off. "Well, we’d have to change the name since we aren’t exactly insiders on either side any more. This kind of thing is what we created the Insiders for in the first place, wasn’t it?"

Luke thought about that for a few seconds. "You’re right, it is. I forget, did we ever bring Jacen in on the Insiders?"

"Not that I remember. You weren’t sure how much he was changed by his captivity," Wedge reminded him

"I’m beginning to think it changed him more than I had imagined. Have you brought the topic up with anyone else?"

"I sent Tycho a message with vague references to it. With the way I sent it, the message shouldn’t have to go through any censors, but even if it does, they won’t find anything wrong with it." Wedge stood back up. "Do you want anything to drink? Booster gave me a bottle of Whyren’s Reserve from his personal stock."

"No thanks. I’m still on Rwookrrorro time, so it’s too early for me to start drinking. Tycho and Winter will know to keep it discreet if they catch the references. I’ll bring it up with Han and Leia when they get back from Bastion."

Galactic Alliance Senate, Coruscant
While Caedus hadn’t expected applause as he entered the chamber, neither had he expected nearly a quarter of the senators to stand up in their pods and start walking out.

Using the Force to make sure that everyone heard him, he spoke. "Before you all leave, you might want to hear what I have to say."

Most of the senators paused and turned to face him. One, the Dimala senator, spoke into his microphone. "Only if what you are going to say is that you are resigning as co-Chief of State."

"No, not that," Caedus replied with a hint of a smirk. "If you are leaving because of the Jedi abandoning us at Kuat, you might want to rethink that, considering that Luke Skywalker attempted to assassinate me four days ago.

"Colonel Solo, was this ‘assassination attempt’ before or after your immoral and illegal orbital bombardment of Kashyyyk?" the Camaasi senator asked.

"It was after," Caedus admitted. "I regret that bombardment was necessary, senator. Remember, I spent most of my childhood under the protection of a Wookie. The bombardment was their fault, not mine. "They were harboring fugitives and withholding vital war material."

Not satisfied with his answer, many of the senators who had risen when he arrived continued to walk out of the Senate chamber.

"Kashyyyk, the Hapan Consortium, and the Jedi Order are enemies of the Alliance. If they had not abandoned us, this war would be all but over and we would be planning the election for the new Chief of State at this very moment," Jacen said.

"I do not believe you," the Camaasi senator said, rather insistently. "You should be attempting to negotiate a peace, not drawing more people into the war."

"I did not start this war, Senator," Caedus responded, suppressing his anger at being challenged by a mere senator. "I understand where you are coming from, but if we negotiate a peace, it will only delay the conflict for a few years before it re-ignites. If we want a lasting peace, we must first deal with those who are attempting to destroy order."

"I hear the sincerity in your voice, Colonel Solo. However, my people can no longer support this war. If you will not negotiate a peace, then we have no choice other than to secede from the Galactic Alliance," she pronounced, gracefully standing up and following the other senators out of the senate hall.

Caedus took this news in stride. "I have nothing further to say at this time," he said, before crisply turning and walking out of the senate chambers. Admiral Niathal followed him out of the room.

"We need to talk," she demanded.

Both Chiefs of State remained silent until they reached an empty conference room.

"With both the Camaasi and the Jedi gone, we have lost a great deal of our moral superiority in the eyes of the public," the admiral told Caedus. "Especially after that idiotic orbital bombardment of Kashyyyk."

"That ‘idiotic’ orbital bombardment probably saved Kuat," Caedus said. "And moral superiority is not as important as material strength. With the Confederation going after every shipyard they can, we can’t afford to lose the largest shipyard we have."

"Yes, but it also caused the Hapans to withdraw their fleet. That puts us in an even more difficult position, especially if the Queen Mother decides to join the Confederation," Niathal snapped back.

"She won’t join the Confederation. When she talked to me, she said that she supports the Galactic Alliance, but not me. The problem is that I am the Galactic Alliance."

"Don’t you mean that we are the Galactic Alliance?" Niathal asked, swiveling her eyes to look at him.

"Yes, of course," Caedus quickly corrected. For now at least.

"Back to the topic at hand, even if the Hapans stay out of the war, we don’t have as many ships available for offensive operations as the Confederation. Additionally, after what happened at Kashyyyk, we have lost the moral imperative we had when the war started," Niathal pointed out. "The first issue is the more important of the two in the short term."

"I agree. Do you have a solution for it?"

"Despite some Moffs supporting the Confederation, the Imperial Remnant has stayed out of the war so far. Intelligence indicates that the Confederation is sending diplomats to address the Imperial Ruling Council. I instructed the diplomatic corps to send a delegation of our own."

"The Empire stood for order. They should approve of the measures we have taken to restore it," Caedus reasoned. "And on that topic, we need to expand the Galactic Alliance Guard. Terrorist attacks have increased in the past month on most of our major planets, and we’re starting to get spread a bit thin."

Niathal clearly hadn’t heard of an increase in terrorist attacks, but played along. "With as unpopular as you are in the Senate right now, there’s no chance of them agreeing to that."

"I will talk to Senator G’Sil. He has been sympathetic to the needs of the Guard in the past. And as for the Jedi, they may be a bigger threat than the Confederation."

"Bigger in what way?" Niathal asked.

"They can inspire sedition because people believe in them. I will deal with the problem they present myself."

"Deal with them in what way?" Niathal asked.

"In whatever way is needed to prevent them from being a threat," Caedus told her. "Between my contacts and several of the Force techniques I learned during and after the Vong War, I can make sure that they don’t impede the conclusion of the war any more than they already have."

Awesome chapter!! Go Ben for sticking to what he believes -- especially since he's right tongue And your Caedus continues to be eerily chilling.

Thanks and thanks again for beta reading.
Yeah, Ben is right, but it's going to take some time for him to convince people that he is.
As for Caedus, if you think he's chilling now, wait until you read the next scene (well, you already have, but you know what I mean wink )

Just to give you all a little preview, tomorrow will be the first scenes for both Tahiri and Jag.

Current PM list

Chapter 3
Galactic Alliance Guard Headquarters, Coruscant
As soon as he heard the click of his office door locking behind him, Caedus pulled the holocron that Alema had given him out of a secret compartment in his desk and placed it on his desk. He held his hand on top of it, but nothing happened for several seconds.

She gave me a broken holocron? Caedus asked himself.

As soon as he finished the thought, a hologram of an older man with black hair appeared above the holocron.

"I am Darth Vectivus, the gatekeeper of this holocron. What do you wish to know?" it asked.

"What did Alema access?" Caedus immediately asked, knowing that she wouldn’t have given it to him unless she had already learned everything she wanted to know about it.

"The Twi’lek?" the hologram of Vectivus asked. "She was judged too insane to gain access to the true knowledge this holocron holds."

Caedus thought for a moment. He would have plenty of time to investigate the contents of the holocron. "What can you tell me about Battle Meditation?"

The hologram of Vectivus did not answer immediately. "I did not have any experience with battle meditation, but I did find a notation in an ancient Sith text I recovered. The text made reference to a Sith Master who was a battle meditation expert who assisted in many battles during the war with the Jedi and gave the location of the star system where the master died."

"Colonel Solo, Jedi Veila has arrived," Orlopp interrupted over the comm.

"Send her in, Orlopp," Caedus ordered, quickly deactivating the holocron.

"Yes, sir," the Jenet lieutenant responded.

As Caedus hid the holocron in his desk, he considered how to handle Tahiri. He had combined several techniques to make her become addicted to flow walking. It had worked a bit too well, and while it made her utterly dependant on him, that was not what he wanted in an apprentice. I still want Ben as my apprentice, but Tahiri has her uses.

Tahiri entered the office, dressed in a rumpled flight suit. Dark rings around her eyes showed her exhaustion.

"Hello, Tahiri," he said. "I’m glad that you decided to stay with the Galactic Alliance, unlike the rest of the Order."

"Somebody had to," she replied.

"We need to make sure that concerned citizens don’t mistake you for one of the Jedi who abandoned us at Kuat. I’d like you to accept a commission in the Guard."

"Does that mean I have to wear boots?" she asked, a bit of the old Tahiri shining through as a hint of a smile crossed her face.

Inwardly, Caedus rolled his eyes, but he forced himself to return her smile. "Sorry, they’re part of the uniform."

"Well, I guess it makes sense," she said after thinking about it for a moment.

"Good. I can have Lieutenant Orlopp prepare the paperwork while we go for a walk. I thought of a place near here that we can go to see Anakin," Caedus told her.

At the mention of Anakin, Tahiri’s eyes lit up and her exhaustion seemed to vanish. "Lead the way."

After issuing orders to Orlopp, Caedus and Tahiri checked out an airspeeder. Caedus flew them to the now-abandoned Jedi Temple and took a moment to gain his bearings before finding the spot he was looking for. The Jedi had managed to take most of their smaller artifacts, but GAG and Alliance Intelligence had already scoured the building for any information that could be useful.

"I think this is the right place. The floorplan was different before the war." Tahiri took Caedus’ hand and he projected them back in time to an empty hallway. Before Tahiri could say anything, a younger Kyp Durron walked through an intersection ahead of them. "Looks like I wasn’t too far off," Caedus said as Kyp stormed away without noticing them.

"Where’s Anakin?" Tahiri asked, her free hand shaking a bit.

"He should be just around this corner," Caedus said, leading her to the intersection Kyp had passed through. As they got closer, Caedus heard the voices of his siblings.

"How can we know that?" Jaina asked.

"Think logically," Anakin said. "Any planet taken by the Yuuzhan Vong is obviously dangerous."

Caedus and Tahiri turned the corner to see Jaina and Anakin talking in the hallway. As soon as they saw them, Caedus backed them away to their own time.

"Why did you pull us back so soon?" Tahiri asked, stumbling back against a wall as her exhaustion gripped her again.

"That was the price of failure, Tahiri," Caedus told her, forcing himself to seem apologetic. "I had to learn where the Jedi went after they abandoned us from Ben and you failed to capture my parents."

"If I’d contacted you, the masters would have known it immediately, Jacen," she replied. "And I didn’t expect your mother to attack me the way she did."

"Results are what matter, Tahiri. If Ben hadn’t showed up to try to assassinate me, I wouldn’t have known where Luke ran off to. But don’t worry, I have an easier assignment for you this time," Caedus told her. "Intelligence learned that the Confederation is sending a delegation to the Remnant. I want you to capture them, alive if possible. I’m assigning an interdiction cruiser and a company of GAG troops to you for this assignment. If you succeed, we can come back and stay longer."

"I won’t let you down, Jacen," she told him, standing straight.

Millenium Falcon, en route to Bastion
As Jag approached the lounge, he heard the hiss of a lightsaber. Turning into the room, he saw Jaina wearing a sports bra, shorts, and a helmet with its visor down. A remote zipped around her, firing a series of low-power blasts that her purple lightsaber deflected to seemingly random points around the room. Jag found himself frozen, watching her until he realized what he was doing.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts. I don't want another relationship until I decide what's next, and she probably wouldn't want to take me back.

Not wanting to distract her, Jag edged along the wall to the kitchen area. She must know I'm here, Jag thought as one bolt hit the wall near him. After a few more near-misses, he made it to the caf dispenser and started preparing a pot

After another couple of minutes, during which Jaina blocked every shot, she deflected one straight back at the remote, ending the training sequence.

Without removing the helmet, she deactivated her lightsaber and turned to face him. "You’re blocking my last target, Jag."

"What?" Jag looked around, trying to find any kind of target.

Sighing with frustration, Jaina pulled off the helmet, allowing Jag to see that her face, flushed from the exercise, and hair were absolutely soaked with sweat. She walked over to the kitchen and pointed at a small circle of flimsy that had been attached to a cabinet door at about her eye level. It looked like debris from a hole punch. "That was my target, and I couldn’t hit it because you were in my way."

"I’ve never seen you do a drill like that before. I thought you were just deflecting the bolts at random," Jag admitted, coming close to an apology. A chime drew his attention. "Do you want some caf?"

"Sure," Jaina responded, reattaching her lightsaber to her belt.

As she practically collapsed into a chair, he grabbed a pair of mugs and poured the caf into them. "I guess that was you running through the corridors that woke me up a few hours ago," he commented as he turned back to Jaina.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t remember that you were such a light sleeper. I should have been quieter," Jaina responded, wiping the sweat off her face with a towel before taking a sip of her caf.

Jag considered mentioning that he wouldn't have survived the two years on Tenupe without being a light sleeper, but thought better of it. "So, why did you feel like you needed to wake up so early to exercise?"

"I realized something. I’m going to have to be the one to take Jacen down. I’m sure that Tsavong Lah is laughing about that in whatever afterlife he’s in. Eleven years after his death, he’s finally going to get the battle he wanted."

Jag considered that. It's one thing to lose a sibling in battle, but I can't imagine having to make that kind of decision. Honestly, I'm not sure if I could make that decision. "What makes you so sure?" he asked. "And how do you get from there to spending half the night exercising?"

"I’m not sure if he was influenced by Luminya, but the Jacen I grew up with would never have done any of the things he’s done in the past year. The time he spent traveling around the galaxy learning from other Force groups gave him abilities that I don’t have, so I need every advantage I can get."

"You’re probably right about that, but there is a fine line between preparing and burning yourself out," Jag reminded her. "And our current assignment is tracking down Alema. You can’t afford to look past her."

"I know." Jaina took another drink of her caf, then looked at the chronometer. "We should be about an hour out from Bastion. Let’s go to the cockpit and see if Dad needs any help."

They got to their feet, caf mugs still in their hands, and walked through the corridor to the cockpit. Jaina tapped the cockpit hatch open and their ears were assaulted by Han’s snores. The back of his chair was tipped back, allowing him to sort of lay down.

"Should we wake him up?" Jag asked.

"No, we have time before we revert. I’m going to go take a sanisteam," Jaina replied, finishing her caf.

Well, we knew that Alema had the holocron from Inferno, and with what Jacen found on it, I figured there needed to be a scene with him using it.

As for Kyp, I just figured why try to write a new scene in the past when I could steal one wink It's from the beginning of Conquest

Chapter 4
Rwookrrorro, Kashyyyk
"Valin, do you have a minute?" Corran asked.

His son quickly turned from the workshop table he had been crouched over. "Sure, Dad. Or is it Master Horn for this?"

"For this, it’s Master Horn," Corran responded as he sat down on one of the stools that Valin had moved away from the table. When he had first started helping at the academy, it took him months to get Valin to stop calling him Dad during classes. Over time, it had evolved into a running joke between them. "Working on your lightsaber?"

"Actually, no. I had an idea a couple days ago that I’m working on. What did you want to talk to me about?" the younger Horn answered, loading everything into his tool kit.

"In the past few weeks, did you notice Tahiri acting unusually?"

Valin thought about it for a few seconds. Over the past few years, he had been Tahiri’s usual partner on most of her assignments. "Starting a couple days before the anniversary of Anakin’s death, she was a lot more withdrawn. She usually needs some time to herself at that time of year, but this time she disappeared for several days. When she came back, she didn't seem to be the same Tahiri I've worked with for the past few years.

"How so?" Corran asked. While he had picked up a habit of tinkering from his mother, Valin also had Corran's own investigative streak.

"I tried talking to her about it… you know, to see if there was anything I could do to help, but she always had some excuse to avoid talking about what was bothering her. Then every few days, she would disappear for an hour or two."

"Did she say anything to you about Jacen?"

Valin didn't answer for a few seconds as he thought back. "Not that I can remember." After a brief pause, he continued. "I just thought of something else. It didn't look like she was sleeping very well. Every time I saw her between Anakin's death and leaving for Kuat, she looked tired."

"All right. That's all the questions I have for now. If you think of anything else, please let me know." Corran said. "So, what was it you were working on?"

Recognizing the more casual tone of the question, Valin relaxed a bit. "It's just a little something that Doran suggested. I don't want to talk about it until it's done and I'm sure it works, but it's something you and Jysella will both appreciate."

Sith Meditation Sphere, Unknown System
As soon as the meditation sphere dropped out of hyperspace, Caedus reached out with the Force, trying to find the Force signature that would mark the Sith tomb. His eyes snapped open as he detected not one, but two nodes of the dark side.

This is a place of great power, the meditation sphere whispered into his mind.

"I know, I can feel it too," Caedus replied. He stretched out with his mind again. The more powerful of the signatures was in space, close to the sun. The other, only slightly less powerful, was on the sole planet in the system. "Let’s go to the planet first," he decided.

As soon as the thought had formed in his mind, the meditation sphere altered course. As the planet became visible and grew, Caedus could see that it was mostly covered in water, with many small islands dotting the half of it he could see. The meditation sphere fell toward a specific island, homing in on the nexus of the dark side on the planet. As it grew closer to the island, Caedus could see that while most of the island was overgrown, the center was taken up by a clearing containing ancient ruins.

The meditation sphere settled to the ground at the edge of the clearing. Caedus ensured that the new lightsaber he had constructed during the journey was attached to his belt before stepping out of the ship. He quickly walked to the largest segment of the ruins. Using the Force, he pushed the remains of what appeared to have once been a stone door out of the way to reveal a passageway that sloped sharply downward.

As Caedus descended, he noticed that below ground level, the walls were virtually undamaged. The Force must have preserved this ruin, he thought as he descended, leaving distinct footprints in the ages of dust. It is the only way it could have survived in this condition. As the light from the outside faded, Caedus drew the lightsaber he had constructed during the journey and ignited it, casting red light down the passage. An intact door sat at the bottom of the tunnel.

Caedus again reached out with the Force to open the door. Though it resisted at first, it eventually succumbed, swinging open. The darkness of the room beyond seemed to absorb the light emitted by the lightsaber, so Caedus pulled a glowrod off his belt with his free hand and activated it as he stepped into the room. The combined light revealed a number of ornate caskets scattered around the room and a rust brown droid sagged against a wall. Surprisingly, as opposed to the ramp, very little dust was visible in the tomb itself.

Caedus knelt next to the closest of the ornate caskets and brushed the dust off of it, revealing text that, though similar to Aurbesh, was different enough that he had difficulty reading it. He stood and walked to the next, but before he could touch it, the red eyes of the ancient droid lit up.

"Query: Who are you to disturb the tomb of my masters?" The droid asked. The smoothness of the motion as it straightened up and raised its arms surprised Caedus, as did the blasters it held in both hands.

"I am Darth Caedus. I seek knowledge of the Sith."

Clearly not satisfied, the droid spoke again. "Prepare to eat blaster, meatbag."

Caedus raised his lightsaber, but before the droid could fire, he saw the blue apparition of a female Force ghost, her back to him.

"Do not shoot him," the spirit ordered. As the droid lowered its blaster, the ghost turned around. "Darth Caedus, I am Lady Bastilla," she told him.
