Another great post! I love how you made Ben mature, but still with some childlike characteristics. I can't wait for the next post and thanks for the PM.

Thanks. I figure he'd definately have childlike characteristics. Heck, I'm 23 and I still do.

Tomorrow will be the battle on the gunship and a Corran scene.

Oh, and just as a head's up, there probably won't be an update next week. Work has been hell this week and I'm out of town over the weekend.

Chapter 8
Interdiction Destroyer Watchman, Bandomeer System
Tahiri watched as the boarding arm split into individual tunnels and extended against the hull of the gunship. While her soldiers were only boarding from one of them, the other tunnels would force the gunship's security complement to split their forces. Tahiri and the members of the 967 walked down the tunnel as they waited for the hull-cutter to finish creating a hole for them to board through. They took cover behind barricades that sprouted out from the walls, expecting to take fire from some Confederation security forces as soon as the hull was breached.

A loud chime indicated that the cutter was five seconds from finishing. Tahiri pulled her lightsaber off her belt and let her thumb rest on its activation switch. The section of hull fell aside, and before Tahiri could move, a volley of blaster bolts came through it. Her soldiers returned fire and she heard a few screams of pain from the other ship.

She ignited her lightsaber and started deflecting blaster bolts as she stepped out from cover. As soon as she did, she saw that four of the six Confederation soldiers she had felt were still standing, with another two writhing in pain on the floor. A Force push knocked them back to give her time to cross into the gunship corridor illuminated only by emergency lighting and her lightsaber. "Lay down your arms and you won't be harmed," she told them even as they resumed firing. They are enemies, but I don't want to kill them if I don't have to. A blaster shot from one of her soldiers caught one of them right in the faceplate of his helmet.

"I would rather die here than die as a prisoner!" one of the three remaining enemy soldiers yelled, firing as he charged at Tahiri. Tahiri batted the bolts aside, then swung with her lightsaber, cutting his arm off as the other two guards were picked off by the 967.

"We're clear," Tahiri called. "We need some medics up here."

"Could you leave something for the rest of us to do next time, boss?" one of the younger troopers joked.

The rest of Tahiri's company entered the corridor and split into the four teams needed for the mission. Two of the teams immediately walked down the dim corridors to their targets, the bridge and engine room.

The smallest of the four teams set up defensive positions near the insertion point while Tahiri and her team stood guard.

"We're set up here," Lieutenant Mathais told her after a couple minutes.

"Good job," Tahiri said before motioning for her team to advance. Their task was to find the ship's passengers and detain them.

At first, they met almost no resistance, but when they turned into the corridor with the VIP quarters, they were met by a barrage of blaster fire. As they took cover, another barrage was fired from behind them, catching two commandoes in their backs.

"Ambush!" Duvil cried.

Tahiri reached out with the Force, but didn't feel anyone where the second volley had come from. "Droids behind us," she yelled.

Before she could say anything more, the three soldiers carrying heavier weapons threw ion grenades back towards the two droids, who had exited the quarters they had been hidden in. The focused ion blasts stunned the droids and gave Tahiri a clear look at them. Good thing they aren't YVHs. That would be a serious problem. "Finish the droids," she ordered.

Not waiting for a response, Tahiri charged at the Commenorian soldiers in front of them, deflecting blaster bolts back at them as she ran. When she reached the barricade in front of the guards, she used the Force to jump over it. As she landed, she cut the blaster rifles of the two nearest guards in half. She felt danger from one side and turned, deflecting a blaster bolt into the chest of the man who fired it.

Tahiri felt a jolt of pain from her back, but ignored it as she knocked the guard closest to the wall out with a kick. She turned back and saw an astonished look on a man's face as his blaster fell from his hands. That pain must have been from a blaster bolt, Tahiri thought. My armor reduced it enough that I wasn't seriously injured.

An explosion drew everyone's attention as the battle droids were destroyed. Tahiri used the second to reach out to the minds of the remaining guards with the Force. "Surrender and you won't be harmed," she told them.

Most of the soldiers dropped their weapons, but one who appeared to be the leader yelled at them, "She's using a mind trick."

They started to pick their blaster rifles back up, but the delay let Tahiri lunge at the man and impale him with her lightsaber. Seeing their leader killed, the rest of the soldiers stopped reaching for their rifles and held up their hands.

Seeing that resistance had ended, the remaining members of Tahiri's team ran up the corridor and began restraining the prisoners.

"Get a medic for the Major," Corporal Almak called.

"No, let them tend to the others first. I can go into a healing trance once we get back on the Watchman," Tahiri told him. She took a second to force the pain out of her mind, then straightened back up. "Let's finish the job."

With most of her team securing the corridor, Tahiri used her lightsaber to start cutting through the door of the first set of VIP quarters, a soldier to each side with blasters ready.

As soon as Tahiri cut the door open, they entered the room and turned opposite directions, searching.

"Clear!" Almak yelled.

They moved on to the next quarters and the repeated the same procedure. This time, Tahiri heard a stun blast. "Got one!"

The rest of the quarters were occupied and the diplomats were quickly restrained. After making sure that the prisoners were properly restrained, Tahiri activated her comm. "All teams, status reports."

"Major, this is Team 1. Bridge is secured and prisoners are being restrained. Our casualties are being looked at by the medical team."

"Team 3. Engineering secured. Two dead, three injured."

She quickly changed frequencies to the channel being monitored on the bridge of the Watchman. "Captain, this is Major Velia. Target is secured."

Rwookrrorro, Kashyyyk
"How is your investigation going?" Kyp asked, setting his plate down next to Corran's. While the two men rarely agreed on anything, they had a great deal of respect for each other.

Corran swallowed the food in his mouth, then turned to his fellow Jedi Council member. "I don't have anything conclusive yet, but everyone I talked to agreed on a timeframe for the start of her unusual behavior."

"Oh, when was that?" Kyp asked between mouthfuls of food.

"It was shortly before the anniversary of Anakin Solo's death," Corran replied.

"They were close, but if his death was going to cause her to go dark, why didn't it happen sooner?" Kyp asked.

As obnoxious as he can be, Kyp does tend to cut to the heart of an issue. "Yeah, that's the question. Grief can be a tricky thing to predict. You'd think that someone snapping due to the death of a loved one would happen soon after that death, but it doesn't always work that way. Back in CorSec, I investigated a suspicious death that ended up being a suicide. The woman's husband had died eighteen years before, and to friends, she seemed to have gotten over it, but we found a journal she kept, and that showed that she had been overcome with grief after all that time. There has to be more to it than that, though. Valin and Doran have worked with her more than anyone the past couple years, and she didn't feel dark to them, just distant."

Kyp fell silent for a moment. "It would take more than just being distant for her to overlook the bombardment of Kashyyyk and try to arrest Han and Leia. Do you think someone is manipulating her?"

"As much as it pains me to admit it, you're probably right," Corran joked after chewing the last bit of his meal. "And the only person that could be is Jacen. The question is whether he manipulated her verbally, which would make her a willing participant, or through the Force, which would mean she doesn't know she's being manipulated. Based on when I've worked with her, I'm guessing the latter is more likely."

"Hoth must be melting, because we agree with each other again," Kyp said with a smile. "That would fit with her saying that Anakin wanted her to work with Jacen. So we should try to get her away from Jacen's influence and help her."

"That is how I'll suggest we handle it at the next Council meeting," Corran said as he stood up.

Thanks for your comments, especially about the characterization of Caedus. Tahiri will continue to play a major role throughout the story (as you could probably guess from one of the trailers being about her.

Chapter 9
Galactic Alliance Guard Headquarters, Coruscant
"Good, it looks like the Anakin will be out of drydock in a few more days," Caedus muttered. He had made it back to Coruscant just hours ago and was catching up on his message traffic. I could send HK-47 to Hapes to get Allana, but I have to assume that Tenel Ka asked for Jedi protection for her. If it was just Tenel Ka and her security, he could probably handle it, but I'll only have one chance at it.

A chime distracted him from both his thoughts and the next message. "Yes?"

"Admiral Niathal is here to see you, Colonel," Orlopp reported.

Caedus reached out with the Force and could feel Niathal's frustration. "Escort her in," he said before closing the comm line. He continued to read his messages until the Jenet lieutenant escorted Jacen's fellow chief of state into the office.

"Hello, Admiral. What can I do for you?" Caedus asked, looking up from his console.

Niathal impatiently waited for Orlopp to leave and the office door to close before answering. "If you don't want to be the co-Chief of State, just say so."

Caedus allowed a frown to cross his face. "What do you mean by that, Cha?"

"It seems like every time I turn around, you are off world and out of contact." Caedus found it hard to read Niathal's facial expression, but through the Force, he could tell that her anger wasn't an act.

"I found references to an archive of Force knowledge that I did not believe Luke uncovered. What I found there will win the war for us."

"What did you find? I don't see a new massive fleet orbiting the planet," Niathal commented, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Nor a large army on the ground. Manpower is our largest concern at the moment."

"I found something more useful than either. There was a great deal of information about an advanced form of battle meditation," Caedus answered. "If I had known the technique at Kuat, we could have won there without the Jedi and without drawing the Confederation fleet away."

"Is it similar to the Force meld the Jedi have used since the Vong War?" Niathal asked, interested despite herself.

"It is far superior to that. It allows me to effectively serve as a yammosk for our fleet while disrupting the coordination of opposing forces. From what I found, it can even interfere with a Force meld, but I'm not sure how much."

"That could be useful. What are the drawbacks?" Niathal asked.

"I will need to be in the system where the battle is taking place in order to influence it. I know you want me to stay on Coruscant, but I won't be able to if we want to win this war," Caedus replied with a touch of humor. "And if any of the Jedi know the proper techniques, they may be able to disrupt it."

"Does your uncle know how to disrupt it?" Niathal asked.

"The Jedi haven't used battle meditation in years, so most likely not."

"I know this is not in my field of expertise, but could you teach Major Velia the technique as well? That would allow you to remain on Coruscant," Niathal suggested.

"A certain amount of it has more to do with natural inclination than power with the Force. She could learn it, but she wouldn't be nearly as effective as I will be," Caedus said. He looked down to the next message on his console. "What? The bill to expand the Guard was voted down?"

"Senator G'sil and I tried to push it through, but the rest of the Security Council decided that we have moved into a phase of the war where internal security is a lower priority than the fleet." Caedus felt a certain amount of satisfaction emanating from Niathal as she made that announcement. "Terrorist attacks have dropped as the war has expanded. They have authorized funds to rebuild the battalion that was lost on Ossus, but no further increases in troops or equipment."

"The size of the Guard is what caused the decrease in terrorist attacks," Caedus said, injecting a touch of anger into his voice. "All it takes is one major terrorist attack to destroy morale. Coruscant and our shipyards are secure, but if the Guard is going to be able to defend other planets, we need more men."

"We argued that, but some of the members of the council believe the Guard is too big as it is. Maybe if you had been here to address them yourself, you would have been able to convince them," Niathal replied.

"Maybe so," Caedus replied. "I've got to finish going through these reports. We can talk more about how to handle this later." Actions speak louder than words. If they don't see why the Guard is needed, perhaps they need a demonstration.

Imperial Capitol, Bastion
"The Empire has always stood for order, and that is what the Galactic Alliance is trying to maintain," the Galactic Alliance representative, an unimpressive-looking man said. "Corellia and the others believed that they should get the benefits of Alliance membership without following the rules that govern the rest of the Alliance. We ask you to help us restore order by allowing us to use your fleets to help eliminate the Confederation."

While none of the Moffs applauded the end of the man's speech, Pellaeon could see that he had scored points with several of them.

"We will inform you of our decision when we make it, Mr. Teles," Pellaeon intoned, dismissing the man with his voice.

As soon as Teles exited the meeting room, Moff Flennic spoke. "It appears that the Confederation cares so little for our support that they did not send a delegation to speak with us."

"That may be," Pellaeon replied, "but there is another person who wishes to address us before we make our decision."

Before any of the Moffs could respond, Leia walked through the door wearing her most formal Jedi robe.

Flennic instantly shot to his feet. "What right does this criminal have to address us?" he demanded.

"I am here to represent the interests of the Jedi Order, the Hapan Consortium, the people of Kashyyyk, and all other people caught between the two sides of this needless war," Leia replied, appearing unruffled by the man's outburst.

"In other words, you represent traitors and criminals. How appropriate."

"I would like to hear what she has to say, Kurlen," Moff Sarreti said.

"Of course you do. You were in secondary school when her brother assassinated the Emperor!"

"This isn't the time for another of your tirades, Flennic," Pellaeon interjected.

"The peoples I represent cannot support either side in this war. Admiral Niathal and," there was a small hitch in Leia's voice. "… And Colonel Solo took power in what was essentially a military coup. They manipulated laws and subverted the Charter to remove Chief Omas, then escalated the war."

"It seems that any time you disagree with the decisions of the legitimate rulers of a government, your first reaction is to try to depose them," Flennic interrupted. "First Emperor Palpatine and now your own son."

Leia was silent for a moment. "I am afraid that the comparison you just made could be more valid than you realize. Both subverted the democratic process to bring themselves to power and both used terror tactics to try to keep systems in line. Jacen ordered the bombardment of Kashyyyk, which was a member of the Alliance, just because they did not leap at his command. If you side with him, how long will it be before he betrays you the same way?"

Pellaeon saw several Moffs considering her words. After letting them soak in, Leia continued. "I am sure the representative of the Alliance talked about order when he addressed you. A certain amount of order is needed, but there is a thin line between order and tyranny, and the Alliance has crossed that line. Until the Alliance is brought back under the control of an elected leader, it is not truly the Alliance. We want to end the war so that Colonel Solo and Admiral Niathal will be forced to fulfill their promise to hold elections and relinquish the power they have assumed."

"If you are opposed to the policies of the Alliance, why not join the Confederation?" Moff Quille asked.

"While the Confederation aided Kashyyyk when it was attacked by the Alliance, we cannot support them because of their participation in the attempted assassination of Queen Mother Tenel Ka," Leia answered.

"I had been under the impression that you were active participants in that assassination attempt," Moff Lecersen commented. Pellaeon respected Lecersen, who, though he was less vehement than he had been before Kashyyyk, still favored fulfilling their treaty obligations to the Alliance.

"You were misinformed," Leia replied. "Han and I were not aware of the assassination attempt until just before it began. Once we figured it out, we assisted in stopping it."

"Thank you for the clarification," Lecersen said.

"All we are asking for is a mutual defense pact and a promise that you will not provide assistance for either side in the conflict. As long as the Consortium and Kashyyyk aren't attacked, we will not ask you to spend the lives of your soldiers."

Yeah, I imagine it would have been tough for her to admit. Even though she is appalled by what he's done, he's still her son.

It seemed like something he'd probably consider, but HK-47 probably couldn't stand up to Lowie, Tesar, and Tenel Ka by himself.

I don't have any plans to include Kyle in a major role, but he'll probably make an appearance or two.

Post will be up after I get back from the gym.

Chapter 10
Star Destroyer Errant Venture, Elshandruu Pica System

Syal tapped the door control of her parents' quarters.

After a few seconds, the door hissed open. Her father's eyes widened as he saw her. "Syal? What are you doing here?"

She smiled broadly before giving Wedge a big hug. "I just came in on the Rising Star. Uncle Tycho and Aunt Winter are settling into their own quarters and I was wondering if you had a bed for me."

"Tycho brought you? I didn't want him to involve you in this," Wedge said. "We do have a spare bed in Myri's room."

Syal walked into the suite and dropped her bag on the couch before sitting down on it. "It's not like he kidnapped me," she joked. "He just talked to me and what he said made a lot of sense."

Wedge sat in another chair and smiled a bit. "Well, it's good to see you. Were you at Kuat?"

Syal was saved having to answer by her mother coming out of one of the other rooms in the suite. "Syal!"

"Hi, Mom. It's good to see you," she answered, standing up to accept the embrace of her mother.

"Let me guess, Tycho and Winter picked you up on their way here," Iella commented with a smile.

"How did you know?" Wedge asked with a smile.

He's not actually surprised that she knew, Syal thought. After all, Aunt Winter is as much her friend as Uncle Tycho is dad's friend.

"I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you," Iella joked.

"I'm still on Kuat time," Syal said. "Where's the room I'll be staying in?"

"Oh, of course. It's right over there," Wedge said, motioning to one of the room's doors. "We can catch up more in the morning."

Syal entered the room her father had motioned to. One of the room's two beds was neatly made while the other was strewn with blankets. "Well, I can guess which one is Myri's," she joked to herself.

She dropped her gear bag on the neat bed and unzipped it. After pulling out her uniforms and neatly laying them out on the bed, she realized that, other than what she was wearing, she only had one set of civilian clothes. I'll have to ask Mom if I can borrow some clothes from her.

Before she could do anything else, she heard the door hiss open again followed by a surprised cry. "Hi, Syal!"

Syal glanced over her shoulder. "Hi, Myri." She returned her attention to her bag, then turned back after she had a second to process what she had seen. Myri's hair being a riot of color was no surprise, but... "What is that you're... well, I suppose you could call it 'wearing'?"

"I'm working as a sabacc dealer at the Maw Casino," Myri said, explaining her low-cut dress. "It's a good way to get information."

"Maybe, but you're my little sister. Why can't you wear something a little less revealing?"

Myri let out an exasperated huff. "You and Dad seem to think I'm sixteen, not twenty-two. This isn't as revealing as what some of the other dealers wear. It helps attract men to my table."

Syal rolled her eyes and turned back to unloading her bag.

Myri peeked over Syal's shoulder. "Looks like you need more clothes. As soon as I get changed, we can go shopping down at Trader's Alley."

Syal groaned, but she knew Myri wouldn't take no for an answer. "Not tonight, Myri. It was a long flight and I've had a bad week."

"You were at Kuat?" Myri asked. "I heard things were pretty bad there."

You have no idea. Syal didn't let her emotions show as she replied. "Yeah, you could say that. I don't really want to talk about it right now."

"Well, I have tomorrow off, so we'll have plenty of time for shopping. I'll even buy," Myri said with a smile as Syal hung up her uniforms in the closet.

Syal rolled her eyes as she dropped her bag at the feet of the bed. "Good night, Myri."

Jacen Solo’s Apartment, Coruscant

"HK-47, you said that one of your primary functions was sabotage, correct?" Caedus asked, sitting in a chair in his apartment. His plans were starting to take shape, but still lacked concrete details.

"Statement: Yes, Master," The brown droid confirmed.

"How do you feel about staging a terrorist incident? I need the people to realize how important the Guard is."

"Statement: I have no problem destroying innocent targets," HK-47 replied, his red eyes gleaming with malice.

"Very good. Now I just need to figure out a target for you." Caedus sat for a minute, trying to consider the best place to strike. "It needs to be on a planet that doesn't have a significant military presence so we aren't blamed for not preventing it."

After a few minutes, he felt himself drawn to Cal Omas' schedule. The schedule, now rendered obsolete by both the coup and Omas' death showed that he would have been on Chandrila in two days to speak to the participants in the Legislative Youth Progam. "Perfect," Caedus said. Before he could explain further, his danger sense flared up. "It feels like we have assassins coming. Get ready."

HK-47 turned and walked out of the line of sight from the door. Caedus rested his hand on his lightsaber as the door panel chimed. "Who is it?" he called.

"Courier," came the response through the speaker. Caedus took cover behind his chair and used the Force to open the door and saw a Bothan standing there, package in hand. The package erupted as a hail of metal tore through it. Startled by the fact that his target wasn't right in front of him, the Bothan pulled the slugthrower out of the fake package, and followed by five others, entered the room.

When it looked like no more assassins were going to enter, Caedus exerted himself with the Force to shut the door behind them and stood up. "Only six of you? The Confederation must be more strapped for resources than I thought."

The Bothans turned toward his voice and immediately began firing, three with blasters, and the others with slugthrowers. Caedus blocked the blaster bolts with his lightsaber and used the Force to catch the projectiles in midair and throw them back at the assassins. Two of them fell.

As the remaining Bothans took cover, a pair of blaster bolts came from the closet HK-47 had concealed himself in and caught one of them in the chest.

"Exclamation: Die, furry meatbags!" He took another down with a blaster shot to the head as Caedus let loose a blast of Force lightning, killing two more.

Caedus, his lightsaber still ignited, walked over to the Bothans. One of the two who had been hit by the slugthrower projectiles was still alive. "Tell me who sent you and you will live," he said, forcing his will on the Bothan.

He was strong-willed, but his injury, combined with the sheer power of Caedus made the decision for him. "Admiral Babo," he forced out through the pain.

That's all I needed from you. Caedus reached out with the Force and casually crushed the Bothan's windpipe.

"Query: Do you wish me to kill his superior?" HK-47 asked hopefully.

"Not right now," Caedus said. "I have a more important task for you first."

It's great. HK-47 is one of the greatest assassin droids. He took out a company of 686 Sith in both KOTOR games combined. He should be able to handle Lowbacca, Tesar, and Tenel Ka and still survive. He is HK-47 after all.
