Thanks for the compliment on Caedus. I figured that I should show how evil he can be to really establish him as the villain.

As for the Syal scene, I originally thought of it as a kind of throw away scene, but it does help build Syal's character and provides some nice foreshadowing.

It's great. HK-47 is one of the greatest assassin droids. He took out a company of 686 Sith in both KOTOR games combined. He should be able to handle Lowbacca, Tesar, and Tenel Ka and still survive. He is HK-47 after all.

I like HK-47, but I don't realistically consider him a match for them. He'll definitely have an impact on the story, but I don't want to overrate him. If it was just Hapan security and Tenel Ka, he'd probably be able to pull it off, but not with Lowie and Tesar there too.

Thanks. Yeah, Syal does need to talk to someone about things, but what's the fun in letting her blow off steam before she's ready to explode? tongue

Thanks. Like I said, HK-47 will play a pretty substantial role (and based on my current outline, will be back in Chapter 14). Yeah, Kuat had a big impact on Syal, but you won't find out exactly why for a while. devil

Thanks. I've been going back and forth on how much to do with Myri through the rest of the story, and based on the response to the scene, it looks like I need to figure out something for her.

Update tomorrow, and it'll be the first chapter where both scenes take place on the same planet.

Thanks to everyone for reading and setting a record for responses to the chapter.

Chapter 11
Imperial Capitol, Bastion

"Hello, Gilad. You wanted to see us?" Leia asked. It had been more than a day since she had addressed the Moffs.

"Yes, I did, Princess. The Moffs have made their decision and I wanted to tell you personally," he said. "They have agreed to the mutual defense pact you suggested."

"Even Flennic?" Han asked skeptically.

"No," Pellaeon admitted. "He was one of the three moffs who voted against it. He and Rosset voted to support the Alliance and Quille voted to support the Confederation."

"So I take it that Quille is the one who has been providing men and supplies for the Confederation?" Jag asked.

"He is who we suspect is aiding the Confederation," Pellaeon said, making it clear with his tone that he was already certain of it.

"Do you need any assistance in your investigation?" Jaina asked. "Master Horn has made sure that all Jedi Knights have at least some training in criminal investigations."

"Thank you, but that will not be necessary. My aide, Vitor Reige, is overseeing it personally," Pellaeon answered.

"What about Flennic and Rosset? Is there anything you are planning to remove them from the council?" Han asked.

"Flennic has kept his nose clean since the little disagreement we had during the Vong War. As for Rosset, I disagree with him, but he says that we should support the Alliance because they haven't broken their treaty with us."

"I can at least respect that," Jag said.

"Thank you, Gilad," Leia said, standing up. "We need to go to Hapes to inform the Queen Mother of the treaty."

They were already planning on going to Hapes, but they didn't tell me why, Jag thought. Maybe Leia could tell through the Force that this is what was going to happen.

"Very well. It was good to see you again," Pellaeon told them. "Jagged, could you stay for a minute?"

Jag looked to the Solos. They were eager to get to Hapes for some reason, but Leia immediately responded. "Take as much time as you need. As much as Han is tempted to, we won't leave without you."

"What do you mean by that?" Han asked, feigning incomprehension as he stood up.

"We can talk about it on the way to the ship," Leia told him, leading him out of Pellaeon's office.

"I understand why you refused a commission before, but I'm offering it to you again," Pellaeon told him after the Solos left.

"As I told you, sir…" Jag interrupted.

Pellaeon returned the favor by cutting him off. "Just let me finish. I need a liaison with the Jedi, and since you're already working with them, you are perfect for the job."

In other words, I can accept the commission, but still make Alema a priority. Jag considered for a moment. "Under those conditions, it would be my honor to accept a commission."

"Thank you, General Fel," Pellaeon said with a smile. "I will have a ground crew prepare a TIE Defender for your use."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alema felt Carid leave the ship. She had escaped detection during the transit to wherever they had ended up. A few minutes after he left, she followed, pursuing the imprint he made in the Force.
After walking less than a kilometer, he stopped in front of another landing bay. Alema melted into a shadow and waited. We hope he is meeting the Solos, but there is no way to know for sure…
Her thought was interrupted by the landing bay door sliding open. From where she was, she could see an old Corellian transport in the landing bay. But we have been wrong before. Paying little attention to those around her, Alema followed Carid into the landing bay.
He was attentive, but Alema was able to use the Force to avoid notice as she crept behind a stack of shipping crates, where she waited for several minutes.
For all we know, Fett could have meant for Carid to kill the Solos out of revenge, but if we attack and he helps them, it would make things… difficult for us. Making her decision in an instant, Alema raised her blowgun to her lips and launched a poison dart at him. Unlike the Jedi, Carid was unable to detect the dart until it pierced the skin just behind his ear.
Alema started to leave her hiding place, but felt someone approaching the landing bay and waited. A minute later, the door hissed open and Han, Leia, and Jaina entered.
"Jaina, I know you don't have as much experience dealing with bounty hunters as I do, but I thought you'd know to hide the body better," Han said.
"What are you talking abo…" Jaina's voice trailed off as she saw Carid's body. "I've never seen that man before in my life."
"I have a bad feeling about this," Leia said. Alema felt her reach out with the Force and suppressed her presence as much as she could.
"I feel a presence, but it's slippery," Leia finally said.
"Alema," Jaina surmised. "Dad, get out of here."
"Not on your life," he said as Alema lined up her blowgun to shoot her last poison dart at him.
Before she could fire, Jaina or Leia Force pushed Han back through the door.
"Alema, we know you're in here," Jaina called, looking around to get an idea of where she was hidden.
"Jaina, protect your father. Alema is my problem," Leia said, pulling her lightsaber off her belt.
"Mom, it'll be easier for us to find her and take her out together," Jaina replied, activating her own lightsaber.
Alema took advantage of their disagreement to fire the dart at Jaina. Unfortunately for her, it stopped in mid-air before being crushed by the Force.
"Bad idea, Alema," Leia said turning to face her. "Just surrender now and save us all the trouble."
"You destroyed our nest and you destroyed our beauty. For that, we will make you suffer as we have," Alema said, stepping out from behind the crate and raising her blue-black lightsaber in front of her.
"Not to mention your sanity," Jaina muttered.
Leia activated her own lightsaber and cautiously moved closer to Alema. Alema's anger gave her the energy to overcome her injuries as she charged at Leia, leading with her lightsaber. Leia sidestepped and brought her lightsaber around to try to hit Alema as she passed. Alema blocked and swung her lightsaber at Leia a few more times, but Leia blocked each time.
Leia responded with several fast strikes. While she didn't get through Alema's guard, she did manage to force her back. Alema blocked a blaster shot from Han, but this left her open to a lunge from Leia.
Alema hissed with pain as Leia's lightsaber pierced her bad shoulder. "If you are going to kill us, then kill us. Do not leave us to suffer as you have before," she demanded, swinging her lightsaber once more.
Alema felt a burning sensation in her chest and involuntarily fell to the ground. Looking down her body, she saw a deep lightsaber wound on her abdomen. We are dying, she thought. We will never be able to find Balance, but perhaps there is a way we can get some measure of revenge. "Jacen… is a Sith," she forced out, using most of the energy she had left to make sure that Leia heard it.
Leia's response was the last thing Alema wanted to hear. "Thank you for the warning, Alema."
If she had the energy, Alema would have screamed at the injustice of even her smallest revenge being denied.
I was looking for ways that they'd find out that Jacen was a Sith, and when I decided that Leia would be the one to kill Alema, I thought it would be a nice touch for her to say it.
I think the important part for Jag's family is that Alema is truly and verifiably dead.
Originally, I was going to have Caedus kill her in Chapter 1, but I decided to hold off on it to add some drama.
Like I said above, she was originally going to die sooner, but I decided this would work better.
Tomorrow's post includes Jacen's response to the assassination attempt and one of the scenes from the trailers.
Chapter 12
Galactic Alliance Ultra-High Security Penitentiary, Coruscant
"What can I do for you, Colonel Solo?" the prison administrator asked. If it wasn't for his uniform, Caedus would have mistaken him for a bureaucrat based on his balding head and his sagging midsection.
"I would like to speak with Prisoner Sing," Caedus told the man.
The administrator, who Caedus made no effort to remember the name of, spoke again. "May I ask why?"
"No, you may not," Caedus replied. "Unless you would rather be a resident of this facility instead of its administrator."
The administrator visibly gulped. "Very well, sir. I will escort you to her cell personally."
The walked out of the administrator's office and through the halls of the prison until they reached the deepest, most secure cell block and the Force vanished from Caedus' mind.
The administrator winced at Caedus' reaction. "I apologize, Colonel. I should have warned you that we were approaching the Ysalamiri boundary."
Caedus forced a smile. "No apologies are necessary. You are not used to having Force-sensitive guests."
"Here we are. I will just magnetize her restraints and we can go in."
"Magnetize her restraints?" Caedus asked.
The administrator responded as he punched in some commands on the door panel. "You could say that, sir. The first time one of my men brought her a meal, she snapped his neck with her bare hands and tried to escape. I had to flood the whole cell block with coma gas to bring her down. We fit her with arm and leg restraints that can be magnetized to secure her to the wall whenever someone else is in the cell. The records from Oovo IV indicated that she was dangerous, but I had no idea just how dangerous she was."
"That will be all," Caedus said, dismissing the man.
"We don't let anyone into the prisoner's cell alone, sir," he replied.
"She's stuck against a wall and I'm GAG. I can handle her myself if she causes problems. Now leave and turn the cameras off," Caedus insisted.
Even without the Force, his voice was forceful enough to persuade the man to leave. "Whatever you say, sir," he replied, giving a quick salute.
After a few seconds, Caedus tapped the door panel and the door opened. True to the administrator's word, Sing was fastened to the wall opposite the door.
"What do you want, Solo?" she demanded, her voice dripping with malice.
"There is a job I would like you to do for me," he said evenly.
"What's in it for me?" she asked.
"Agree to do a mission for me and I will give you your freedom and a ship. If you complete it to my satisfaction, I will give you the opportunity to do more for me," he replied.
"What keeps me from killing you as soon as you free me? There's nothing I love more than killing Jedi."
"That expertise is part of the reason I want you to work for me. You wouldn’t have heard about it in here, but there has been a falling out between the Alliance and the Jedi order. After the first assignment, I would pay you for each Jedi and Confederation leader you kill," Caedus said.
"You have my attention," she admitted with a predatory smile.
"Last night, there was an assassination attempt on me. I discovered that it was ordered by the Bothan Admiral Babo. I want him dead, and if you can frame the Jedi, so much the better. After that, you are free to kill whatever Jedi or Confederation leaders you want with four exceptions," Caedus explained.
"I assume that you are one of them," she said, her tone making it clear that it was a statement rather than a question.
"It would be difficult for me to kill you if I'm dead," Caedus answered with a smile. "The other exceptions are Tahiri Velia, Ben Skywalker, and Chume'da Allana. If you attempt to kill any of them, the deal is off and I will kill you."
"You have a deal, Solo," she said, nodding. "How are you going to get me out of here?"
"I will arrange to have you moved to a lower-security cell and make further arrangements to allow you to escape," Caedus told her.
Rwookrrorro, Kashyyyk
"What's this about, Dad?" Ben asked. His father had woken him up very early and was leading him through Rwookrrorro toward one of the landing pads that had been allocated to the Jedi.
Luke stifled a yawn of his own before answering. "When we get there, you'll understand."
They both lapsed into silence as they navigated through the rows of Stealth-X fighters. As soon as they passed the last row, Ben saw a very familiar ship with a non-reflective gray hull. "We're going to the Shadow?"
"Cilghal had a chance to get some things from my quarters when she was coordinating the evacuation," Luke explained. "I want to show you something."
Ben watched his father deactivate the Jade Shadow's security systems. "What is it?"
Luke didn't answer, but motioned for Ben to follow him as the ship's hatch hissed open. Ben could see the pain on his face as they entered the ship. Ben knew that it was the first time his father had been on the ship since Mara's death. When they reached the master cabin, Luke pulled a chest out from under the bed. "Could you help me open this?"
I wonder what's in there, Ben thought as he started unfastening latches. Between Ben and Luke, they quickly removed the lid. Luke dug through the chest. It looks like most of the stuff in there is Mom's.
"Here we go," Luke said, breaking the silence as he pulled a lightsaber out of the chest. Ben instantly recognized it, but his father explained. "This was my father's lightsaber. Both your mother and I have used it and I want you to have it."
Ben took the lightsaber from his father's hand and, making sure it wouldn't touch anything, ignited it. While the academy lightsaber Ben had used was the same shade of blue, something about this lightsaber, which had served both of his parents well for years felt different.
After a few seconds, Ben deactivated it and handed it to his father. "Thanks for the vote of confidence Dad, but I don't deserve this. Not after what I've done."
Ben could feel a mix of sadness and confusion in his father's mind. "Chief Omas' death was my fault."
Luke took a minute to answer. "I heard you were there, but I don't know what happened. I'll understand if you don't want to tell me."
Mom would understand. I'm not sure if Dad will, Ben thought, struggling with the decision. "Jacen had given me evidence that Omas was behind Mom's death."
"He told me that when I confronted him after hearing about what happened," Luke interrupted.
"I didn't want Chief Omas to die. I wanted to fake his death so I could get close to Jacen. But he thought Jacen would see through it so he…" Ben fell silent for a moment. "He threw himself onto my lightsaber."
Luke put his arm around Ben. "You tried to keep him alive, but when someone wants to die, it's very difficult to talk them out of it."
Ben frowned. "Jacen said something like that on Lorrd when we were investigating. We got called to a hostage situation and Jacen let the hostage taker blow himself and one of his hostages up to save the rest. Nelani wasn't happy with him and that's how he explained himself."
"That was just before Nelani's death, wasn't it?" Luke asked.
"Yeah, it was," Ben said. "I wish I could remember more about what happened then. You and Mom said you thought that Brisha was Lumiya's daughter, but I don't remember anything about her but her name. It feels like it's important, but I just can't figure it out."
"Ben, you don't have anything to be ashamed of," Luke said, placing the lightsaber back in the chest. "You tried to avoid killing Cal, and that's the important part. I want you to take the lightsaber, but if you don't want to, you can make your own."
Ben considered for a moment. "I'll think about it, Dad."
I like how you portrayed Ben as being able to owe up to what he's done. It feels like he doesn't know if he's worthy of the Skywalker name. ANd a wonderful conversation between Sing and Caedus. It's nice to see that Caedus still considers Ben someone to keep alive. More soon, and thanks for the PM!
