Title:
How?
Author:
talkingbanana
Characters:
Myn, Lara, Kell, Tyria, Doran, Syal
Rating:
PG
Summary:
Myn and Lara get their shuttle back.
Author's Notes:
Takes place sometime around Betrayal. I've only read about half of Betrayal and I'm not really that interested in the LOTF storyline, but I liked this part.
Anyway, here you go. For the fanfic100 prompt #81, How?
* * *
Myn Donos is not an easily angered man.
If you asked him about it, he would probably say that he learned control of his temper from his years as a sniper. Tempers and emotions have no place behind a sniper's scope, he'd explain; the only way to get the job done is with cool, lethal efficiency.
However, that's not to say that he never gets angry. He admits that Kirney can be frustrating, and hardly a day goes by where he doesn't fight with their Ewok co-pilot, Kolot. But they're his
family
, and he can never stay angry with his family for long. He loves them, mood swings and identity crises and shedding fur and all.
But this - this gets him
angry
.
Their biggest shuttle, the most important part of their small transport company, had been stolen two weeks ago right under Kirney's nose, and it had vanished without a trace. He's not angry with Kirney, because he knows it's not really her fault, but he is furious with the government. The official response he gets from CorSec is that they've marked the shuttle as a casualty of war; it was stolen by the enemy during a battle that raged through the streets of Coronet City, and if their insurance didn't cover battle damages or "acts of the Force," they were out of luck unless the enemy mysteriously returned it.
The CorSec official he had seen yesterday had made some snide remark about how, with Myn's history, he could expect Coruscant to return the shuttle any day now, complete with a traitor's commission. The official's jaw is now a slightly different and considerably more painful shape.
The door chime rings, and Myn gestures to his wife to stay seated in their office; he'll get it. They both know that it's probably another angry old lady who wants to know why her flight on their now-missing shuttle got cancelled, or maybe an angry old man who wants to send a cargo of rhyscate to his son on Coruscant despite the cessation of trade.
Everyone these days is angry. Myn wonders briefly how the galaxy got this way, angry all the time, before emerging from his office.
But for once, the customers aren't angry ones, and Myn's own anger fades to curiosity as he studies the two anxious looking teenagers standing in front of the counter, holding hands. They're unusual for several reasons: they're too young, they're wearing tattered old flightsuits, and they look
extremely
familiar.
"Kirney, dear, can you come here a second?" Myn calls out; she's better at placing faces than he is. He subtlety reaches underneath the counter and hits the button that locks the doors; if Kirney recognizes the kids, considering the current somewhat
strained
relationship between Corellia and Coruscant, they might try to run.
His beautiful wife emerges from the office and stops. "Myn, are they?" she asks tightly, her voice trailing off. She doesn't finish the question.
"We're, um, friends," the boy says weakly, glancing at the girl at his side. "We kind of borrowed your shuttle a little while ago. We brought it back."
"Myn, this is bad," Kirney whispers.
Myn can't remember the last time she sounded that scared. He wraps an arm around her shoulder and pulls her close, doing the best he can to let her know that it would be okay. He recognizes the boy now, knows why she's scared. "You're Kell Tainer's son," he says quietly.
The boy appears to consider lying, but simply nods weakly. He starts to say something, but the girl elbows him in the side, and he clenches his mouth shut. Turning to the girl, he whispers something into her ear; when she nods, he looks back up. "Is Lieutenant Kettch your co-pilot?"
Myn can't help it; he laughs. So does Kirney, and he's grateful for that; she doesn't always laugh about their time with the Wraiths.
Kirney stops laughing suddenly, and the color drains from her face. "Iella Antilles," she announces, staring at the girl. "Myn, she's Wedge's daughter. She looks exactly like Iella."
The girl cringes. She obviously didn't expect to be recognized.
Surprised, Myn studies the girl. His wife is right. He remembers the kids' names now, remembers seeing the baby pictures. "Doran Tainer and Syal Antilles, all grown up. And together, no less." He knows that their parents are on opposite sides of the war and assumes they might be, too; but he decides not to mention that. Feeling bold, he asks, "Do your parents know?"
"Mine do," Doran answers, hesitates. "We're sorry about stealing your shuttle, Mr. Donos. It's - it's this damn war, sir. We were stuck and getting shot at and we had to get out."
Myn tries to smile, but can't. He hurts to think of his old friends' kids getting shot at, despite knowing that the Tainer boy is a Jedi and that comes with the territory. The Antilles girl, too, she is probably a pilot like her father or Intel like her mother. Still, didn't they all fight so their kids wouldn't have to? Wasn't that the point? "It's all right, kid. No harm done?"
"No harm done," Doran assures him, looking back over his shoulder at the shuttle. "Um, my parents came. They didn't know if you'd want to see them, so they're waiting."
Myn looks at Kirney; this is her decision. Kell and Tyria will recognize her, and they both know that. Kirney swallows hard and then nods. "That would be nice, Doran," she says quietly. "If Wedge still hasn't turned me in, all these years, they won't either," she whispers.
Doran closes his eyes and the shuttle ramp lowers, revealing good friends they had long since lost touch with. Myn smiles at their emerging forms; they have aged, as they all have, but the years haven't been too unkind. He wonders how this could happen, how a war could bring home long-lost friends, but he remembers to hit the door lock release before Kell and Tyria reach the door. Taking Kirney's hand, he leads her out in front of the counter to greet them. They share an uneasy laugh at their shocked expressions of recognition, but the laughter turns to tears of joy as Tyria reaches out and embraces Kirney.
Kell looks at Myn, a silent question; they need to know her name. Myn doesn't hesitate. "Kell, Tyria, I'd like you to meet my wife, Kirney."
They understand, and that's all that truly needs to be said. Still, Tyria whispers words of healing: "We never doubted you. We never doubted you."
"Thank you," Kell adds quietly. "We never could've caught him without you."
Myn smiles; he has told Kirney this all along, but she needed to hear it from them. He wonders again, how? It is one of those questions that will always plague him now, but he decides not to worry about it. It isn't important how the shuttle returned or how the Tainers, of all people, were the ones to return it; he is simply thankful that all is well once again.

RE: How? - Betrayal AU, one-shot, Myn/Lara
I saw this last night
talkingbanana
, but didn't have time to read - but I have remedied that now. This is just great, and I'm so glad you took that little scene on Betrayal and turned it into a story. I like the AU twist.
I think what you show really well here is the huge toll that war takes, and that comment of Myn's about what it was they all fought for - i.e. that their kids should have a better life - is right on the button, It's a very real human concern, and it cuts one to the heart when one feels that one's efforts have all been to no avail. (Sorry about all the "ones" - it sounds really poncy, eh?
)
Anyway - it was so nice to see what
Betrayal
implied - Myn and Kirney together. It was also cool to have Kell and Tyria involved. Great little viggie, and thanks so much for posting it.

I just love this. It's great to see Myn/Lara again, and this is such a plausible scenario.
Still, didn't they all fight so their kids wouldn't have to? Wasn't that the point?
I can see that exact sentiment haunting those of the Rogues' and Wraiths' generations, considering how things kept turning out.
Still, Tyria whispers words of healing: "We never doubted you. We never doubted you."
"Thank you," Kell adds quietly. "We never could've caught him without you."
Perfect. It's such an incredibly brief snippet, but the words and manner are exactly as Tyria and Kell should be. And lovely to see them reunited with Myn and Lara, for however short a time.
Beautifully done. It's always good to see something about the Wraiths from you.
