Thank you. I've written other stuff before, but never Star Wars, so I'm learning as I go.

Okay guys, since the first links to the pictures of the first chapter didn't work for everyone, I've now uploaded them again and hopefully they'll work better this time around. Here are the new links:
A mutual dream
Father's despair
And on to the most important part of this post: the second chapter is now revised and ready for posting! I hope you enjoy it.
Here we go then...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 2.
JEDI BASE, MED WING
A FEW HOURS AFTER THE DUEL ON THE ANAKIN SOLO
No med wing had ever been in such a state of chaos. Even the air seemed to vibrate with anxiety and grief. Every now and then there was a faint ripple of excitement over the long awaited victory – but those were all quickly drowned by a waves of guilt. The whole base was in muted, moving in slow motion. No one walked briskly in the corridors with a spring in their stride, there was no exhilarated bustle in the mess spiced with relieved laughter. Nothing indicated that a cruel war had finally come to an end.
They all knew of the tragedy that was still unwinding. The last chapter of a family crisis that had swallowed the entire galaxy like the black holes of the Maw.
Leia had used all her strength just to get back to the planet and stay sane despite the dread and rage swirling in her mind. She tried to calm herself, to stand straight and wait, but the horror she tried to control overwhelmed her. Letting out a small sob her knees almost buckled.
Han was there before she could fall. Leia leaned her head heavily against his chest and suddenly her sight was blurred by the tears she had fought back until now. No Force-method could help her, no political double-speak could turn away an unwanted situation like this. All they could do was wait and hope, but it was driving her insane.
Leia gripped the front of Han’s shirt. She felt him squeeze her closer and soothe her unruly hair softly with a shaking hand. Her flowing tears soaked the garment wrapping his chest and she trembled.
She could feel the terror radiating from him, the overpowering need to lose control and tumble down. He wasn’t one to give up, and feeling how close he was to the edge frightened her. She didn’t think she’d be able to gather the strength she would need to keep them together if he broke down. He’d carried her through losing Anakin even while suffering himself. She had no idea if she could do the same for him now.
The sound of rushing footsteps reached Leia’s ringing ears. She didn’t need to turn her head to see the worry that had settled on her brother’s face, to know the dread he felt, being so close to losing another loved one so quickly.
It had only been a few months since Mara’s death. The regret was still raw in all of their minds, now multiplied by the horrifying realization that another bright light was being tossed into infinity by the hands of the same executioner. They’d already lost too much to the tempests of this galaxy, to their own kin.
Leia could feel Han shake his head desperately as he helplessly gazed into the anxious blue eyes of his brother-in-law. She sensed Luke reaching toward her in the Force, offering support and embracing her mentally for comfort. Excruciatingly long minutes passed by and they continued to wait, fearing the news that were to come at any moment.
Finally a soft whoosh sounded in the corridor as the door of the Med room opened.
Leia’s head shot up from it’s resting place beneath her husband’s chin. Her vision spun with bright spots and her brown eyes had a red hue around the irises. Her legs trembled dangerously but Han’s arms, wrapped around her, kept her steady. Her heart felt like cracking at the sight of the healer standing before them.
Cilghal watched them from the middle of the doorframe, her Mon Cal eyes even more grave than usual. She exuded exhaustion and worry as she tiredly acknowledged the Grand Master’s presence before turning her full attention and compassion toward the Solos.
“There’s nothing more we can do,” she said in a low voice. Leia could distantly feel her sincere sorrow but the situation was quickly moving beyond her comprehension.
Her soaked eyes had found the bandaged form lying on top of the bed in the middle of the room. The completely still body of her beloved daughter, driven to the breaking point and patched back together by the Jedi healers. But Leia knew in her heart that it wasn’t enough, and suddenly slipped through Han’s arms as she fell to the floor sobbing.
****************
The quiet room was bathed in shadows. The only lights were the blinking signals on the consoles and monitors of the multiple medical devises and the faint glow of the bacta tank. At the edge of the ring of light a dark figure sat crosslegged. His black cloak was spread around him, arms resting atop his bended knees. The man’s eyes were shut and to the galaxy he seemed serene, but any Force-user could have sensed the mental war raging inside him half a galaxy away.
The last battle between the Galactic Alliance and its allies, the Jedi and the Confederate forces had quickly turned into a disaster. Almost nothing had gone according to his plans and the visions he’d had of the future in the Force had been of no use. Even the Force-illusions he’d created to aide the strike teams to succeed hadn’t eluded the enemy’s notice.
And now everything was in chaos again.
The man concentrated on the sedated figure in the bacta tank, healing physically but completely ruined in the Force. He didn’t know what to do to change the situation. It was a feeling that was becoming frighteningly familiar to him.
Letting his back slouch, he sighed heavily and opened his eyes. His dim blue irises searched the face gently flowing from side to side in the tank, partly covered in red bacta. It was the only part of the man he could still distantly recognize. He couldn’t look at his mutilated body, the amputated leg and the missing right arm that had left only a short stump hanging from his shoulder. The man’s dark destiny had made him even more like the grandfather he had begun to almost idolize.
Luke couldn’t push back the gnawing desperation he felt of the horrible situation. He didn’t know what else they could have done. They needed to neutralize Darth Caedus, make the threat he presented to the galaxy he swore to protect vanish and not return. And what he wanted most of all, what he’d hoped the Force would show him, was to find a way to get his nephew back. To find the Jacen Solo that still had to be somewhere underneath the Sith teachings that he’d become an adept at, the inconceivable and ruthless Force-powers he possessed.
They all knew that Caedus had to be stopped, but how could they do it and still trust in their own moral judgement. How would it affect their ability to lead the Order, to once again bring peace and serenity to the galaxy? He hadn’t let Ben kill Jacen in the Anakin Solo, he had no right to ask anyone else to throw away the code just for a burst of brilliantly blinding rage. But Jaina had assumed the duty. And Luke had let her. Encouraged her, even.
It would kill Leia, Luke thought, exasperated at himself. It had been his fault that his sister had come so close to losing the last of her children. If he’d just been able to control the Force all those years ago when it all started. The ceremony that had been supposed to celebrate and acknowledge the courage of the survivors of the Myrkr strike team had ended up casting a dark pall over all of their futures.
How could he ever repay the suffering they’d been forced to go through?
Suddenly Luke felt a surge of comfort in the Force directed straight at him. At least he had been able to save one he loved from a doomed destiny. It was a small but bright flash of hope for the future and he clung to it with everything he had left.
****************
It tore Ben apart to see Luke suffer. He stood alone in the corridor of the Med wing, watching his father through the transparisteel window. He could feel the Grand Master’s silent desperation, his exhausting effort to find a solution and the restrained self-blame prowling beneath the expertly maintained calm façade.
Ben knew Luke could feel him there, watching over him – their roles suddenly reversed. He didn’t even try to hide his presence. He’d had enough of that particular Force trick. Using it had already caused so much turmoil that Ben was ready to give it up for a lifetime. Or at least for now. So instead of fleeing the multitude of confining feelings swirling all around him, Ben gathered his strength and poured all the love and support he still had in him into the Force and to his grieving father.
Over the past year the aging Jedi Master had been thrown into ordeals far worse than any man should ever have to encounter. And many of those had been because of Ben himself. His father would never say it, or even openly think of it, but he knew. He blamed himself for letting Jacen get out of control so badly that he was almost unstoppable.
I should have seen it, Ben thought and let a long sigh hiss out of him.
Maybe he could have prevented all this in some way. Stop Jacen from hurting the family he was supposed to love. He had come to terms with losing his mother, but the ‘what if’s still plagued him during the dark hours.
If only he’d told Luke the same thoughts he’d entrusted to Mara. Maybe Jacen would have been stopped in his campaign for galactic power, stood down before killing Ben’s mother.
Before doing this to his own twin.
Ben’s heart wrenched at the thought of his poor cousin, beaten down by her brother in a ruthlessly lethal duel. He knew Jaina had left for the battle prepared to die. He’d seen the calm dedication, the cold dark gleam in her eyes like a predator fighting for its right to live. There had been the unmistakable certainty of her actions being right and acceptable, even unavoidable. The same thing that had made Jacen a monster now made Jaina a hero. But it shouldn’t have been the only way.
If someone else had gone after Jacen then maybe he wouldn’t have been tormented by these thoughts. Still, Ben knew it wouldn’t have changed anything, just the identity of a self-sacrificing martyr. He couldn’t stop wondering if he himself would have been able to take Jaina’s place, to strike at Jacen without emotion, without yearning for vengeance. He wanted to believe he could, but the restrained darkness chewing at the back of his mind made him unsure.
Ben was overwhelmed by the naïve feeling of incompetence and unconsciously reached out to subdue it. Yet another habit he’d mindlessly let Jacen plant in him. Now was the time to feel, to be there for others who needed support, to help his father in any way he possibly could.
Calling on the Force to steady his legs and calm his breathing, Ben walked to the door and stepped into the shadowy Med room. He slowly sat down beside his father, adopting an imitation of Luke’s pose. Without a single word uttered they sat there, grieving in silence.
Then the tears came.
****************
Han leant against the cool and almost uncomfortably sterile wall. The room felt like a medical cage he’d been locked into with his wife and daughter, a place he wanted to run from but was chained to by his intense love for the two women he cared for most in the whole universe.
He didn’t know how long they had been standing there. After a moment of crying by her daughter’s side, Leia had seemingly calmed and Han knew she had succumbed into a deep meditation. He hated not knowing what was going on. All he had to rely on was the monitors, which didn’t make any sense to him at a moment like this.
Watching Jaina’s bruised yet still beautiful face made him choke. He dreaded the loss of only his beloved child. The loss of seeing that playful lopsided grin grace her lips or the glimmer in her brandy eyes when she flew the Millenium Falcon. He’d been worried for her more often than he wanted to remember, but thinking that she might never have the chance to find real happiness grated on him. And now, just as that chance had come close for her to grab, she wasn’t even allowed to try.
The Jedi healers had done everything they could for Jaina. They’d healed the scorched side of her right lung, patched up the vibroblade cuts in her knees and left shoulder, but something in the young woman’s Force presence had prevented them from doing anything more. She’d trapped herself in her own mind, shielded by invisible walls of her own unconscious making.
Cilghal had told Han that it was probably an instinctive but impenetrable way of protecting her mind while trying to heal the mental wounds that the duel with her twin had caused. They could only imagine the scope of the unseen damage that was now tormenting her.
But Jaina was still fighting, clinging on to the last bits of her life that were still worth reaching for. Maybe she’d yet get a chance to seize the love that desperately waited for her.
Suddenly there came a defeated sob giving Han a start as he knelt beside the stool Leia sat on. His eyes flooded with worry as her eyes slowly opened, glistening with newly rising tears. He watched as she heaved a heavy sigh and opened her mouth slightly, searching for the words that were eluding her.
“She… she’s completely blocked in,” she breathed voice trembling.
Han pulled her close and let Leia rest her head atop his shoulder as he tried to process the words in his confused mind. He blinked eyes that were rapidly growing damp when he heard the door whoosh open.
Turning his head towards the sound Han saw a number of sobered people waiting in the corridor. He nodded at them and the group quietly poured in.
Zekk was the first to come to Jaina’s side. Han knew the young man still intensely cared for and even loved his daughter. The Jedi had given up on his implausible fantasy of a romance with his partner, but it didn’t lessen his worry for her in the least.
Behind him there were other Jedi Knights Jaina had trained and fought side by side with. Lowbacca, Tesar Sebatyne and Tekli – the last that remained of the Myrkr strike team - all lined beside Zekk, with their heads bowed in sorrow and compassion. Then there were other Jedi Han had seen and heard the names of but didn’t have the strength to recall. They stayed respectfully by the wall, offering their silent support through the Force.
Han searched the group for the missing face he’d expected to be one of the first by his daughter’s side. The young pilot should have been there, and it made Han almost angry that he dared to be missing in action at a moment like that.
Slowly he stood up and gave Tekli an appreciative nod as the tiny Chadra-Fan took his place at supporting Leia. Han walked to Zekk and pulled him slightly away from the others.
“Where’s Jag?” he asked in a low voice.
“Wandering around,” Zekk answered simply, still gazing at Jaina. He shook his head slightly and let his chin drop close to his chest, closing his eyes as if he was readying himself for meditation. Han quickly jerked the sleeve of the man’s robe, forcing Zekk to raise his head and look at him.
“Where is he?” he demanded with a hiss, still trying to keep his voice low. He didn’t want Leia to have to worry about his growing anger, he just had to find the neglectful space bum who had reacted so explosively to losing the one he loved and yet was absent from her side when she needed him the most.
“I’d try the hangars,” Zekk finally said and sighed heavily. He glared at Han’s hand still gripping his sleeve and turned around as he was released.
Han took a few deep breaths, calming himself before gathering his strength to go and storm the hangars for the man his tormented daughter loved. Turning his sad eyes to once more gaze at Leia, Han swallowed hard and left the room. He had to do this, however hard it might be. He had to do it for Jaina.
Take off, you hoser.
Aleria: I'll be back with my review in a bit!
ON THE EDIT: Okay, I said it before and I'll say it again, the way that you've captured the absolute emotional desolation that would have to ensue after an event like this is FANTASTIC!
You reduced me to tears a couple of times: for Leia, for Luke, for Jaina, for Han and for Jag.
Simply wonderful... Everytime I read something you send me, it gets so much better. As always, the honour is mine to beta this.
Ok, LOL I think I've sufficiently recovered. Awesome job with Leia's feelings. Awesome!!!!! I was getting teary eyed just reading it.
Loved the look into Luke's psyche. This is the second Solo child he's sent into danger that might not make it out and then there's Jacen whom he feels so powerless to help and is like a son to him. Loved how Ben is taking care of his father now and the part where Ben came in and sat by Luke...priceless.
I think I said it in my own fic, but how much can one man take, no matter how great or how strong. Han has always been the glue that held his family together and the loss of Jaina may well be the one thing he can't withstand.
Loved it! I'm interested to see what kind of shape Jag is in. Is he going to revert to his stoic Chiss persona or is he going to be a basketcase.
Awesome job!!!! Can't wait for the next part! More Jaggie!
Finally got to see the drawings. And they were awesome! I really envy people with your talent. I couldn't draw for the life of me.
Awesome post! But everythings so messed up! Jaina and Jacen's live are both just hanging in the balance. I can only imagine what it must be like on the people that care about them. And Han going to find Jag? That sounds like a fight waiting to happen... But I'm sure Jag has a good reason for not being the first at Jaina's side, right? Right?! If not, I'll beat Han to the punch!
Definitely continued the intensity in this next post. For a moment there, I thought you were going to totally keep us hanging as to whether Jaina was alive or not. Well.. since she technically is, there's still hope!
