[Are you sure you wish to shutdown?]

He looked at the large screen. It was black save for that one simple question. His tri-dactyl clawed hands rested on the keys. Did he want to shutdown?

He closed his eyes. It had been more than a thousand years. He had been born in the uppermost part of these underground caves. His green skin had never felt sunlight. His eyes had never gazed on a starlit sky, except for the images that had been displayed on this screen.

For over a thousand years he had waited. For over a thousand years he had watched the events of the galaxy on this very screen. He had watched as different governmental powers rose and fell.

He had watched his parents’ deaths.

Tears began trickling into his bottom eyelids. He knew them. He had seen their heroic deeds and heard their private conversations. Many of those conversations had involved him in some often very small way. His parents had known of his existence, but their hands had been tied and they couldn’t go searching for him. It was still comforting, though, to know that they had missed him, that they had wanted to have him in their lives.

There were so many times that he had longed to reach out to them, to let them know where he was and what he was doing. The hardest thing he’d ever done was watch his mother as she went on a mission that she knew was a trap, full aware that it would result in her death. He could’ve saved her. He had the power. But if he had saved her, she would’ve seen him. Others would’ve seen him. She would’ve had to explain who the mysterious person was who had used such impossible power to save her life.

She and his father would’ve had to confess their forbidden love.

Sure they might’ve been able to explain their way out of it, but once news got out that they had a son, people would’ve no doubt gone looking for him. They would know just where to look. They’d find these caves and this wealth of knowledge. And the Force only knows what evils they would’ve used it for.

As much as it pained him, as much as it had ripped his heart to shreds, he had to let her die. His father had suffered the same pain.

Father…

The tears were now gently gliding down his face. He never had any contact with his father. Yet, for some reason he felt closer to him than he had to his mother. His mother had raised him until he was weaned. Somehow he had retained all the memories he had of that short time. He remembered how soft and securely she held him, how she would often kiss his head and whisper how much she loved him and how he had such a wonderful father. She even told him that she was going to let his father name him.

He remembered watching her as she met with his father again after two hundred years of isolation. He shared her shock at the first thing his father said to her.

“Tesu.”

She had given him a puzzled look. “What?”

He took her hand. “Tesu, I named him. Our son.”

“Tesu…” he whispered to himself. “My father named me Tesu.” For two hundred years he had been nameless. How wonderful it had felt to receive his name from his father, from the one parent that he had no other contact with.

Both of his parents were legendary Jedi, each of them spending a good amount of time on the Jedi High Council. His mother was only eighteen and still a Padawan when she had gotten pregnant with him, just a few days before she’d been captured. She hadn’t realized she was pregnant until she’d been trapped for a week or so. His father, who was more than three hundred years older than her and a Jedi Master at the time, had used the Force to keep a watchful eye on her after hearing of her imprisonment. This was how he learned of her pregnancy.

Tesu remembered crawling over a ledge while his mother was asleep, shortly after he was weaned. When his mother woke and saw the tracks that lead to the edge, she assumed that he was dead. She cried for him often. Even after nearly two centuries, the pain of loosing her only child still tugged at her heart.

It was his father who had given her hope. His father had not sensed his death, and therefore reasoned that he was still alive. He had explained this to his mother when they reunited. She was preparing for a sterilization procedure at the time, knowing that she could not bear the possible loss of another child.

The two of them would often use the Force to make sure that he was still alive and well. They both longed to search for him, but they knew that doing so would result in them being expelled from the Order. Each of them had been given great responsibilities that they could not abandon. They would not neglect the responsibilities that they bore for thousands, just to look for their one son. Tesu admired them for their dedication.

Tesu had literally fallen into the care of a humanoid he knew only as Kenji. His name, physical appearance, and any inferences made about his personality and interests based off of his actions were the only things Tesu knew about him. Kenji rarely (if ever) spoke to Tesu. The only “raising” he did was to take care of Tesu’s physical needs – the need to eat, drink, be changed (eventually potty-trained), and touched. Kenji gradually stopped addressing even these basic needs. This forced Tesu to learn how to take care of himself.

Tesu had learned how to read, write, and speak in many languages via pre-recorded holograms. He used that ability to devour the rest of the datapads, holocrons, tomes, scrolls, books, and any other records that Kenji had housed in the caves. There was more information stored in those caves than the Jedi Archives could’ve dreamed of obtaining. Tesu had no idea how they got into the caves, nor why they were there. Kenji would never respond when he asked about it.

Occasionally, Kenji would call Tesu over and let him watch his mother on the screen (which Kenji called Qwerty). Kenji had somehow programmed her Force signature into Qwerty, and was able to track and watch her every move. Tesu’s father’s Force signature was also programmed into Qwerty once he and his mother were reunited. When Tesu asked Kenji how this was done, he simply said that he “would learn someday”.

A few months after Tesu’s mother had been freed from her prison, Kenji suddenly left. He left behind only a short note, telling Tesu that he was gone, and giving him the authorization codes and procedures to operate Qwerty. Kenji’s sudden departure had surprised Tesu. He had never bonded with Kenji, so he wasn’t really sad that he had left. It was still a bit of a shock, though, to wake up that day and not have anyone there.

As much information as the underground Archives had, Qwerty had much more. Tesu finished reading everything in the Archives before he started on the information provided by Qwerty. It was then that Tesu learned that Kenji had injected him with an immortality serum the same day he had crawled over the ledge.

Tesu continued to watch and track various people as he trained himself in the ways of the Force. His parents were his main subjects. Kenji had done well in keeping Tesu bonded to them. He learned daily from the things they did and said. They were both great teachers, and everything they taught their Padawans and the younglings would also be heard by the long, listening ears of their son.

Tesu wiped the tears off his face with a tattered brown sleeve. The last thousand years of his life had been spent devising an ingenious master plan to finally bring peace to the galaxy, once and for all. He felt almost as if he owed it to his parents to do this. They were a part of him. In a sense, they were him. Each of them had given their lives in an effort to destroy the darkness and end the chaos and conflict that had plagued the galaxy for so many hundreds of thousands of years. Tesu felt it was his duty – his obligation – to accomplish that mission.

Qwerty beeped. He looked up.

[Are you sure you wish to shutdown?]

He paused. Yes. His first finger tapped the appropriate button. The screen went black.

His parents had both left powerful legacies behind them. Now it was his turn.

***

There was a small pillar of soft bluish light that stood in the center of the pit. A hill of rocks served as a kind of staircase out of it. Tesu stood at the bottom of the rocky hill, gazing up and out of the small hole at the top of the pit. He had never seen such light before.

He placed his hand in the pillar. Tiny specks of lighted dust danced around it. He stood there for a moment, mesmerized by the soft moonlight as it reflected off his hand. If moonlight is this beautiful, he thought, I wonder how beautiful sunlight will be? His gaze shifted to the source of the glittering pillar. He began climbing the rocks towards it.

Soon he reached the top. The muscles in his arms flexed as he pulled himself up and out of the pit. His nose and skin immediately picked up a sharp difference in the air. It was crisp and clean, with a light nip of coolness that was brought by a soft night breeze.

Tesu had felt air movement before, but it had always been generated by some fan or other device. This wind was different. It didn’t just come from one tiny source and stay at that exact speed. It came from a much broader direction, and the speed varied slightly, even stopping from time to time. The entire physical sensation of it was so new to him. His body shivered and tingled. He had to meditate for a few moments just so he could get used to it.

He opened his eyes after a few moments, his line of sight resting on the horizon. He slowly lifted his eyes, gazing for the first time on a perfectly clear night sky. Time seemed to stop. The sky was a twinkling blanket bursting with stars, with the full moon as its focal point. Each star looked like a tiny, twinkling light that hung from an invisible thread. He was almost overwhelmed by the vastness of it all. All his life his world had been defined by walls and ceilings. Being in this open space, where there were no walls or ceilings to hold him in, was so new and almost surreal. He felt so infinitely tiny in such an infinitely large universe. It filled him with wonder. All the possibilities, the places he could go, the people he could meet, the lives he could help and save, were all out there, somewhere, just waiting for his arrival.

He spied a small hill a few hundred meters away. That would be a wonderful place to watch the sunrise from, he thought. He stood, inhaling the fresh air, feeling the swish of the wind as it gently tossed his long brown hair. It was a little tangled and dirty, but it wasn’t nearly as long as it would’ve been had he simply let it grow out over the past thousand years. He would let it grow out until it reached the middle of his back, then would cut it to shoulder-length. Right now it was a few centimeters passed his shoulders.

He climbed up to the to the top of the hill. A sliver of dawn glowed on the horizon. Tesu had specifically timed his emergence to allow his skin to get used to the heat and energy that the sun dumped on the planet. As overwhelmed as he had been by the planet’s surface at night, he knew that coming out in broad daylight would’ve been even worse. He reasoned that coming out before the sunrise would expose his skin to gradually larger amounts of sunlight, thus enabling it to gradually get used to that light, heat, and energy. He had watched Qwerty to know when it was time to emerge.

The light on the horizon grew steadily brighter. Tesu watched in silent awe. The clouds and sky began to turn brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple. It was one thing to watch a sunrise on a flat screen. It was quite another to have the sunrise surround him, to be a part of it, to be engulfed by its indescribable beauty.

Soon the tip of the sun broke the horizon. Tesu’s skin instantly absorbed the sliver of sunlight as it spread over the barren landscape. The heat and energy soaked into his skin, causing it to tingle slightly. Tesu closed his eyes. He had never felt something so amazing. As the sun continued to rise, a smile grew on his face. His entire being was overflowing with a simple joy. This… this is wonderful…

He sat there for a few hours, completely wrapped up in the moment. Finally he opened his eyes. His skin had adjusted quite nicely to the heat that poured from the now completely risen sun. It felt as if his skin had been starving, and the sunlight had been its food.

He looked out over the landscape. The remains of what used to be a small yet healthy city glowed in the morning sunlight. Back when he was two hundred, an earthquake had devastated the city, while freeing his mother at the same time. She had helped to rebuild the city before returning to Coruscant. It was hard for him to watch her go.

The city had thrived for many centuries afterwards. But by about five hundred years ago, it had been completely wiped out and abandoned. Tesu sat on the hill, gazing at it for a moment. I think I’ll go pay mom a tribute, he thought.

But first…

He closed his eyes. The awesome power and perfect calm of the Force swirled around him. He could sense a small cluster of dark presences not too far from this star system. Sith, he thought with a smile. Right on schedule.

He sent out a wave in the Force. It was a wave that could only be felt by a Force-sensitive being, and in many ways it was like an emergency “here I am” distress signal. He waited to feel the tiny shift in the Force that would let him know they were responding to the call. It came rather quickly.

He opened his eyes, stood up, and walked down the hill towards the remains of the city. His hands rested behind his back as he reverently walked through what used to be the ancient city’s streets. He was wearing simple brown clothes, shorts and a tee-shirt, both of them scruffy with wear. He could feel the Sith quickly approaching.

***

“Are you sure you felt something?” The teenage zabrak was leaning against a doorway, his arms folded in impatience. “The Emperor is expecting us. If we’re late, he’ll-” He began to feel his airway constricting.

“Someone who is not sensitive enough to feel that call,” the human said darkly, “is someone unworthy to be called the Admiral’s apprentice.” He turned to face the boy, who was now collapsing from lack of air. “Wouldn’t you agree, apprentice?”

“Y-yes… Master…”

An evil smile grew on the Admiral’s face. “Good.” He released the boy just in time to prevent him from dying. “You know,” he said casually as he turned to look out the window at the planet they were approaching, “if the person who sent out that call is really as strong as I felt, then I might just use him as a replacement for you.”

Anger boiled the youth’s blood. The Admiral was famous for two things – his insanely powerful Force choke, and his tendency to kill off his apprentices before they could become powerful enough to challenge him. The zabrak had no intentions of being his next victim. “Then I shall kill him before you have that chance!” he yelled angrily.

The Admiral’s smile widened. “Good. Feed that anger. It will make you great.”

The ship landed next to the ruins of a long-forgotten city. The Admiral and his apprentice stepped off the ship, both of them immediately looking for the source of the call. They walked along for a few moments.

“Master,” the zabrak said in a hushed tone, “I feel like-”

“Feel like what?”

The two instantly turned to find a little green alien standing not too far behind them. The zabrak instinctively drew his red lightsaber. “Like we’re being watched,” he seethed.

Tesu had to struggle to keep from smiling. He was now in a situation that would allow him to quote his father. Well, that is if he didn’t count his father’s horrifically bad grammar. “Put away your weapon,” he said calmly. “I mean you no harm.”

The zabrak looked at his master, who gave him an affirmative nod. He reluctantly put it away, eyeing the little gnome with a sharp hatred.

“We’re looking for someone,” the Admiral said calmly.

Tesu was rolling inside. This was too good. “Looking? I’d say you’ve found someone,” he said, struggling to suppress a grin.

The Admiral eyed him for a moment. “Do you know of any Force-sensitive beings in this area?” he asked suspiciously.

Tesu debated whether or not to continue the dialog his father had with the famous Luke Skywalker over a thousand years ago. As fun as it would be, he thought, it would be best to stop reveling in his heritage and get on with his plans. “I am the one who sent out the call,” he said with a polite nod. “I wish to join the Sith Empire.”

The Admiral smiled cruelly. “Oh?” He took a few steps towards him, hoping to intimidate the sixty-some centimeter tall gnome with his height. “What is your name?”

“My father named me Tesu,” he said with an air of humble dignity. He had decided that this was how he would always introduce himself.

“And who is your father?”

Tesu stared at him as if he hadn’t said anything. That was a secret he planned on keeping for a very long time. “What is your name?” he asked innocently.

“I asked you a question,” the Admiral said, channeling his anger into a Force choke.

Tesu smiled, effortlessly using the Force to redirect the Admiral’s attack away from him. “Isn’t it obvious that I don’t want to answer that question?”

Both master and apprentice gaped at him. The Admiral’s infamously powerful Force choke seemed to have no affect on the alien. I wonder if Force lightning would be a better method of persuasion? the Admiral thought darkly.

Tesu, who had heard the Admiral’s thoughts, immediately created a concave Force mirror around the Admiral. The Admiral’s hands raised. Blue bolts shot out of his fingertips – but they didn’t get far.

The Force mirror both reflected the bolts back onto the Admiral, and contained them to only the Admiral’s body. The Admiral jolted with blue energy, then fell square on his tailbone.

This is my chance, the zabrak thought, instantly wielding his lightsaber. I’ll kill my Master and take his place as Admiral! Suddenly he found himself being hurled back by a massively strong yet very focused Force push. His body slammed into a nearby wall and stuck, as if someone was pinning him there with some sort of Force push-pin. When he looked up he saw that his master was still on the ground, while this Tesu creature was standing, completely composed, gazing at him. He… he hasn’t moved at all!

Tesu turned towards the Admiral. “I didn’t catch your name,” he said, again acting as if nothing had happened.

The Admiral, who was still shaken, decided it best to comply with Tesu’s request. “I am Darth Ragor,” he said as he stood up, “Admiral in the Sith Empire.”

Tesu had already known this via Qwerty, but he played stupid so as to avoid any unnecessary and unwanted questions. He turned to the zabrak, who’s name he knew was Darth Zeth. “And what is your name?”

Zeth was seething in anger and hatred towards him. “I’m not telling you!” he snapped.

Tesu nodded, carefully lowering Zeth from the wall. “Very well.”

“You’ve been trained,” Ragor said, struggling to gather his shattered pride.

“Not exactly.” He turned to face Ragor. “I’m self-taught.”

“Is that so?” Ragor’s eyebrows crossed. “I find that hard to believe.”

Tesu didn’t like where this conversation was going. Looks like I’m going to have to employ my own persuasive methods, he thought with an inward sigh. “I assure you, Admiral,” he said, the Force rippling with his words, “What I have learned, I have taught myself.” It was an offshoot of the Jedi mind trick, and was much more subtle and effective.

Admiral Ragor stared at him, blinked, then nodded. “Very well.” He turned to Zeth. “I would commend you for moving to strike me down,” he said darkly, “except that you failed.” Turning back to Tesu, he said, “You are fortunate in that the Emperor is looking for new recruits. You are also fortunate in that we just happen to be on our way to see the Emperor.”

No, Tesu thought, I’m not fortunate. I’m well informed, and I use that information wisely.

“Come,” Admiral Ragor said as he began walking towards the ship. “I’m sure the Emperor will no doubt be pleased with your decision to join us.”

Tesu nodded, following the two humanoids to the ship. He may be pleased in the short run, he thought as they reached the edge of the city’s remains. But in the long run, he’ll feel like a complete idiot.

His long ears had easily picked up the light hums and whirrs of the starship as it had landed. He gazed at it with mixed feelings as he approached. In many ways, he felt like a child. All his life he had been removed and protected from the rest of the galaxy, viewing the events that transpired as if he were some sort of omniscient god. Now he was going to be in the middle of it all. It felt strange and exciting all at the same time.

Here goes, Tesu, he thought as he stepped onto the boarding ramp. This is where your life truly begins.
