“I WILL CARRY YOU”
Dana Skywalker

Disclaimer: Just icing to George’s cake.
Timeframe: Various. Post-NJO – LOTF
Summary: When your world breaks down, I will carry you. Inspired by the song I Will Carry You by Clay Aiken, which is included through the story in italics. Written for the Mother's Day Challenge.

A shout-out to Jade Pilot, my fantastic Master, who's been like an e-mom on these boards. Hope you have a great Mother's Day! hugs

Happy Mother's Day, everyone! rose

Yeah I know it hurts,
Yeah I know you're scared walking down the road that leads to who knows where.
Don't you hang your head, don't you give up yet
when courage starts to disappear

I will be right here.

“Momma, it hurts.”

Mara sighed. “What did I say the first time, Ben?”

He puckered his lower lip, and cast his eyes downward. “But Momma . . .”

“What did I say?”

He frowned, but relented. “Not to jump off anything that’s more than five feet in the air, even if other boys are doing it ‘cause they’re dumb and you have the Force, which should not be abused,” he mimicked, before adding, “Even though Papa is always telling stories about him jumping around.”

“You can jump off whatever you want when you’re a Jedi Master.”

Ben looked up at Mara with wide, innocent eyes that had a startling resemblance to Luke’s. Especially when the farmboy was in trouble.

She swatted his unruly mop of hair. “Don’t look at me like that.”

He kept his gaze fixed on her. “But Papa always stares at you like that.” He lowered his voice. “When you’re mad at him.”

“You stop picking up your father’s bad habits,” Mara spoke sternly, though she contained her laughter.

“Papa has bad habits?”

“Everyone has bad habits, son.”

“But Papa . . .” Ben blinked his cerulean eyes. He pointed at the Holonet, and said, “They say Papa’s perfect. He kills the bad guys, he saves Coruscant and Corellia and Yavin and, and the whole galaxy! And,” Ben gave his mother a meaningful glance, “He jumped off the playground monkey bars once when you weren’t looking.”

Mara glared at the Holo. “I ought to sue,” she muttered.

“Who’s Sue, Momma?”

She waved her hand. “Nothing.” She ruffled his hair. “Let’s take a closer look at that scrape.”

Ben stuck out his arm, and Mara leaned in to look at the gash. The wound had closed, and a jagged, dark scar remained. Her fingers lightly skimmed the injury, and she felt Ben flinch in pain.

“It looks better. Let’s just stick a bacta patch on it, and it should be good as new in a few days.”

Ben made a face, indicating his opinion of bacta patches.

Mara raised an eyebrow. “Do you want to be grounded?”

He jumped off the couch. “No! Want me to find the patches?” He flashed her a winning smile.

Mara put a hand over her mouth to hide her grin. “Go for it.”

When he was almost out of the room, he stopped and turned around.

“Uh, Momma?”

“Yes?”

“You won’t tell Papa about this, will you?” His mouth quivered, and there was a worried look in his eyes. Mara would’ve laughed if he hadn’t looked sincerely frightened.

“It’ll be our secret.”

Ben grinned before disappearing out of the room.

Everybody cries,
Everybody bleeds,
No one ever said that life’s an easy thing.
That’s the beauty of it,
when you lose your way,
close your eyes and go to sleep
and wake up to another day.

“Good morning, mother.”

Mara was instantly suspicious. She looked up at her son over the rim of her cup of caf. He was still in his worn, X-Wing pajamas Luke had gifted him on his last Life Day. His hair had gotten long, too long for Mara’s taste, and it stuck out at odd angles.

“Mother?” she echoed.

He shrugged, while pouring hot cider into a glass. “That’s what Lorelei calls her mom. ‘Mother’.”

“Who is Lorelei and why does it matter to you what she calls her mother?” Mara gripped her cup, feeling the heat throb through her callused palms. She had a good idea what the answer to her question was.

“Jacen knows her.” He swallowed a mouthful of cider. “She’s from Corellia, and her parents found out she was Force sensitive. Jace might take her as an apprentice.”

“And?” Mara prodded.

Ben groaned. “It’s too early, Mom—Mother.”

She fixed him with a glare.

He rolled his eyes. “She says most her Corellian friends call their moms “mother”. It makes you sound grown up and stuff.”

“Well, you aren’t a grown up yet, Ben Skywalker.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Mara wasn’t satisfied. “Ben, why does it matter to you what she thinks?”

“She’s—” He struggled for the right word. “Sophisticated.”

Mara snorted. “I see how it is. You think she’s pretty, and you find her attractive. She probably has perfect, chocolate orbs for eyes, rosy cheeks, flowing hair, and a heart-shaped face.” When Ben refused to meet her eyes, she pressed on. “And whenever you’re near her, your heart beats faster, you turn red, and you’re at a loss for words. Am I right?”

Ben stared into his glass. “Stop it.”

“Ben . . .”

He took another drink, and set down the glass with more force than he intended. He winced under Mara’s frown.

“Okay, yeah. I like her.”

“Ben Skywalker, you’re ten years old!”

“Almost eleven. And don’t call me by my full name,” he whined.

“Why not? Ileana calls her son by full name.”

“Who’s Ilea—” He stopped when he realized she was mocking him. Glaring at Mara, he said, “Ha ha. That’s not funny, Mom.”

“Ah, that’s better.”

There was a moment of silence, until Ben broke it by saying, “I guess she is kinda spoiled.”

“Then stay away from her.”

He sighed. “Okay, whatever.” He put his cup in the sink and headed for his bedroom. “I need to finish some homework.”

“Ben?”

He turned around and looked at her warily.

“I don’t want to hear about you liking any girls until you’re twenty at the very least.”

He rolled his eyes. “Okay—”

Before he disappeared, she added, “No, make that forty.”

When your world breaks down
and the voices tell you turn around.
When your dreams give out
I will carry you,
carry you.
When the stars go blind
and the darkness starts to flood your eyes.
When you're falling behind,
I will carry you.

Mara turned on the Holonews, sinking into a cushiony seat. Luke had left for a meeting with Omas and other Galactic Alliance leaders. And Ben, well, he was out with Jacen, training for who knows what.

Mara half-heartedly kept her eyes on the flashing images, but her mind was elsewhere.

She missed her son.

Sure, she and Luke had been disappointed when Ben closed himself off to the Force, seeking refuge from the pain that wove through the galaxy and bound itself in the energy field all Force sensitives could feel—the bursts of crimson agony, the sinews of golden-yellow hatred broiling beneath the surface, and the purple bruises, the permanent pain that echoed the suffering of wars long ago.

But during that time, he’d been there, at least. With her. He’d been her son.

Now, he was another fighter in the galaxy, another savior, another boy forged into a man too early, seeking justice that had long evaded the worlds.

As Mara turned her attention back to the Holo, she saw a flash of familiar, fiery hair. She watched, riveted, as a troop of GAG kicked down doors and blasted windows to shrapnel.

There he was.

Ben.

She listened, as the recording was muted, and the reporter began speak. “. . . son of the Grand Master. At only fourteen years of age, he has joined the newly established Galactic Alliance Guard under the tutelage of his cousin, Jacen Solo. Some call the GAG a positive good, while others say it is an unnecessary evil, utilizing police terror and torture tactics. Most are not sure what to make of it though, as the Jedi Order seems to have given its allegiance to the Guard with the membership of Ben Skywalker.”

The screen flashed back to the live recording. Mara’s breath caught in her throat.

“Do it, Ben. You must,” Jacen was saying.

“Wait a minute,” an older man in the black uniform interjected. “He’s just a boy, Commander.”

Jacen shook his head. “He didn’t join the Guard to be protected, but to protect.” He looked at Ben. “This man works for the Confederation. He’s a terrorist—it’s people like him who are bombing Coruscant, taking innocent lives. Ben.”

Mara grasped the edge of her seat. “No, Ben, no.”

Ben had lifted a blaster with shaking hands, and pointed it at the man’s head. His hands and legs were bound, and there was a pleading, frightened look in his eyes. Mara distantly recalled seeing that look often in the eyes of her former assassination victims.

“Commander, I must protest—”

“Shevu, this is not the CSF,” Jacen cut in. “Ben—”

Ben pulled the trigger.

And it was done. The man crumpled to the floor without a sound, and a stunned silence reigned after the shot. Ben had the blaster gripped in his hands, his knuckles white, and a confused look in his eyes.

Jacen nodded. “Well done.” He patted his cousin’s shoulder. “First time’s always a shocker. You’ll get used to it.”

Before she could hear the reporter’s commentary, Mara shut the Holo off and threw the remote against the ground. Seething in anger, she rose from her seat and paced the room like a caged tiger.

“Used to it?!” she roared. “Kriff you, Jacen Solo, my son will not get used to killing!”

She felt a concerned question projected through her mind. Luke. He was still in his meeting, but had obviously sensed her sudden outrage. Mara sent back soothing thoughts, reassuring him. He didn’t seem satisfied, but accepted it for now.

Mara collapsed onto the couch. “Just wait till I get my hands on you, Jacen . . .” she muttered. “What the hell do you think you’re teaching? We trusted you with Ben—trusted you to teach him to be a Jedi, not a murderer!”

Mara reached out to her son in the Force, but found Ben had built a barrier around himself. She felt tears sting her eyes, but wiped them away roughly, unwilling to let her emotions best her.

“Ben . . .” she whispered. “You have to hide from me now, too?”

There was no answer.

You should know now
that you're not alone.
Take my heart and we will find,
you will find,
your way home.

Gone, gone, gone.

Ben rolled out from under the covers, wiping the cold sweat of his palms against his black outfit. The GAG uniform had become so much a part of him, had defined him, that he even ate and slept in it.

Now, it disgusted him.

It reminded him of Jacen—a cousin, a Jedi he had once admired. But whenever he crossed Ben’s mind now, all he could do was conjure up sickening scenarios of how he killed his mother.

Mara.

Mom.

His everything.

She was lost to him, and he finally understood what the word empty meant. She was nothing tangible anymore—no arms to enfold him when he was hurt, no lips to whisper soothing words when he was down, and no rock to keep him grounded. She might as well be stardust, floating in the black expanse of space, unreachable, untouchable, and unidentifiable.

Ben thrust his fist against the wall, feeling the pain shoot through his arm. He made no cry; just let the pain seep through him, hoping that perhaps the physical hurt could take away the void inside of him.

“Mom.”

His voice sounded hoarse, strange. It echoed in the room, before dying. There would be no response, no “Yes, Ben?”, no “What’d you do this time?” and no “Sweetheart, I’ve missed you.”

Just silence.

He broke down; falling onto his bed, tears soaking through the thin, cotton pillowcase.

When your dreams give out
I will carry you,
carry you.
When the stars go blind
and the darkness starts to flood your eyes.
When you're falling behind,
I will carry you,
carry you,
I will carry you,
carry you.

“Good morning, Ben.”

“Morning, Dad.” He stumbled into the kitchen, and grabbed some wheat flakes and a fruit bowl off the shelf. Plopping down in his regular chair, he began eating in silence, not bothering to look up.

“Did you sleep well?”

“Fine.” He shoved a spoonful into his mouth, and swallowed with difficulty. It was hard to eat anything. Force, it was hard to do anything these days.

Luke nodded, focused on his own caf.

Ben looked up at him for a moment. “You’re drinking out of her cup!” he blurted.

As Luke looked at him in surprised, Ben sank lower in his wooden chair, mortified. What had caused him to say something so . . . inane?

“Inane, Ben?” Despite the circumstances, Luke’s eyebrows crinkled with amusement.

“Stay out of my head,” he snapped, a line he had easily picked up from his mother.

Luke’s expression softened. “You miss her.” Before Ben could inject a snappish, blunt remark, his father continued, “Force, Ben, I’m sorry. I’m sorry you live in this kind of a galaxy, where family hurt each other, where the whole darn bloodline is tainted with darkness and tragedy. A place where you had to grow up too fast and so alone. Stars, I’m sorry for everything.” Luke’s face was torn with emotion, and his cheeks damp.

No one spoke for a moment, until Ben whispered, “I’m not sorry for my family.” He looked up at Luke. “I’m not sorry for this family, Dad, and you shouldn’t be either.”

His father looked bitter. “Ben, our family must be the worst one the galaxy’s ever known. We’re Sith, Jedi, smugglers, princesses, assassins, farmboys, heroes, villains . . . and you know what’s worse? We murder each other, then avenge someone, then kill again. It’s a vicious cycle—sometime’s I wonder if half the galaxy’s problems would never have been if it weren’t for the Skywalkers.”

Ben’s fist came down on the table. “Shut up.”

His insolence caught Luke off guard. “What?”

“You heard me.”

His father’s eyes narrowed. “You aren’t the parent here, Ben. I don’t want to hear that tone from you again.”

“I’m not a kid either,” Ben countered. “You were the one who said I grew up too fast.”

An instant look of regret flashed in Luke’s eyes. “Look, Ben—”

Ben held up his hand. “Just let me say something. I know how much it hurts because Mom’s gone. But before she died, she told me to honor those who died for a good cause, and carry on their fight. We wouldn’t be listening to her if all we did was talk about how messed up our family is, would we?”

“I know, son.” Luke met his gaze. “And I won’t say ‘you don’t understand’, because I think you’ve understood some things better than me all along. It’s just, I’ve spent my life fighting to protect this galaxy, yet for everything I’ve done, I wasn’t even able to protect my wife and son.”

“Mom didn’t want protecting. And I, I just want to keep fighting. Like her. For her.” His voice broke on the last syllable.

Luke reached across the table and grasped Ben’s hand. “You’re right.” He chuckled lightly. “When did you start lecturing me?”

Ben shrugged, uncomfortable. “I guess it’s just this place.” He gestured at the kitchen. “I remember years ago, Mom sat here lecturing me at breakfast about girls.”

Luke nearly choked on his caf. “About girls?”

“Well, Mom would be the expert in this house, wouldn’t she?”

“I suppose.”

“I admitted I liked this girl from Corellia because, well, she was pretty and sophisticated.” Ben blushed. “But Mom told me off for it, of course, and said she didn’t want to hear about me liking girls again until I was forty.”

“She wanted you to be like me?”

Ben almost laughed at that. “Well, she did marry you.”

Luke gave him a sad smile. “I don’t know, Ben. I’m so afraid that you’re already beyond forty deep inside, with all the war and suffering you’ve witnessed.”

“So, I can start dating?” he asked, attempting to lighten the mood.

“Don’t even think it.” Luke glanced at his chrono. “There’s a Council meeting in a few minutes. Why don’t you do some lightsaber practice while I’m gone?”

“I think I’ll meditate instead.”

Luke looked incredulous. “Well, you didn’t inherit everything from your mother’s side.”

Ben offered an almost-grin. “Yeah.” He rose from his seat and headed out of the kitchen. After he disappeared, he stuck his head around the corner a moment later.

“I love you, Dad.”

“I love you too, son.”

Later that night, Ben awoke with a start, the sweat pouring down his face. It had been another nightmare—Jacen, the Embrace of Pain—he shuddered, and willed the thoughts away.

Before he closed his eyes again, a shimmer at the edge of the bed caught his eye. He reached for his lightsaber reflexively, as a tall, blue form solidified in front of him.

“Mother?” His voice tinged with disbelief.

What did I tell you about calling me that?

Ben threw off his covers, and resisted the urge to launch himself into her arms. “Mom, mom, mom,” he whispered.

Her lips curved upward in a gentle smile. I’m proud of you, Ben.

“I miss you.”

In reply, she reached her hand out to him. Ben touched his fingers to her blue apparition, and felt a small spark in his fingertips. He tried to squeeze his hand in hers, but it merely balled into a fist, as her hand was unable to hold his.

I’m sorry.

“No.” He blinked away his tears. “Don’t be. Everyone’s trying to be sorry to me, even if they haven’t done anything.”

Ben, I can’t stay long. I just want you to know one thing: I’m always with you. No matter what, I know where you are and what you’re going through. From the Embrace of Pain to the lonely nights and nightmares—you’re braver than I ever was, Ben.

He tried to talk, but the words stuck in his throat.

You’re brave for you father, too. He needs it.

Ben can only nod. Mara moved to his side and ruffled his hair. He felt a small shock wave run through them, and smiled.

“I love you.”

I love you too. She looked at him with a combination of tenderness, sadness and love. I need to go, Ben. Remember what I said.

“Of course.”

The blue faded a little. And Ben. Don’t forget I’m watching—no girls until forty.

He gave her a teary grin. “Yes, Mom.”

Good night, sweetheart.

Ben drifted off to a deep sleep within minutes, and this time, the nightmares didn’t come.

I will carry you,
carry you,
I will carry you.

finis

Hope you enjoyed . . . or something like that. grin
