Title: Help Me Dance Right, Daddy
Author(s): J_M_Bulldog
Timeframe: Post JAT, AU
Characters: Luke, Mara, and an OC
Genre: Family mush. Is that even a genre?
Keywords: Still haven't figured out what this means
Summary: Luke and his daughter's journey though moments in time.
Notes: Set to the song Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman. Beautiful song, and I highly recommend listening to it while reading this. You can listen to it here if you like, and it's free to do so.
Disclaimer: I don't own Luke, Mara, or Star Wars. They belong to George Lucas. I don't not own the song Cinderella. That belongs to Steven Curtis Chapman. I did come up with the OC though
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She spins and she sways
To whatever song plays
Without a care in the world
And I'm sittin' here wearin'
The weight of the world on my shoulders
It's been a long day
And there's still work to do
She's pulling at me saying
Dad, I need you
There's a ball at the castle
And I've been invited
And I need to practice my dancin'
Oh, please, Daddy, please
Luke sighed, placing his datapad gently down on the desk, though he wished he could just throw the thing across the room. He ran a weary hand through his slightly shaggy blond hair frustrated. It was ironic that in a time of 'peace' the work of a Jedi doubled. Far-flung worlds requested advice on matters Luke knew he was not anywhere near qualified to answer. Core world officials threaten with death loudly demanded Jedi protection. And of course there was still the small matter of pirates, smugglers, spice runners, and slavers.
Luke wearily rubbed his eyes before placing his head on his desk. The galaxy, it would seem forget that there was only so many Jedi Knights and even fewer Masters to go around. As the founder of the new Jedi Order and, to many, the leading Jedi Master, it fell to Luke to choose who went on which mission. The fewer numbers inevitable meant some request were shifted lower on the priority list much to the resentment of those who were asking for aid.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy," the tiny voice of his five-year-old daughter bade Luke to life his head.
He smiled as she skipped into his study, red-blond hair bouncing with each step. He noted she wore her 'princess outfit' today and he had to suppress a chuckle. The irony that his and Mara's daughter absolutely adored her Aunt Leia to the point the child wished to act just like Leia while Han and Leia's daughter, Jaina, was never far from Mara's side whenever Jaina and her brothers wee at the Praxeum was not lost on him.
"Daddy," his daughter said, tugging on his arm intently. "Help me."
"What's wrong, baby?" he asked concerned.
"A dance, Daddy," she answered as if Luke was nuts for having to ask. "Aunt Leia say I come. Help me dance right, please."
Luke frowned. This was the first he had heard of any dance. He sighed, knowing he would have to hurt his daughter's feelings because there was no way they could make a trip to Coruscant at the moment. A gentle prodding from his wife cleared his confusion. He had forgotten that his daughter had a very overactive imagination. One that Mara swore she got from Luke. He glanced at his work still lying on the desk. Decisively, he stood. Galactic problems could wait. His daughter wanted to dance. Since he had not known his parents growing up, he had vowed to spend as much time as possible with his children.
"Let's go," he said, taking her hand and leading her out of the study. "We can't have my baby girl not know how to dance properly."
"Mommy, music please," she asked as soon as they reached the living room.'
Luke felt and saw Mara smile as she turned the holoplayer on and he gathered their daughter close. They began to twirl with her standing on the tops of his feet.
So I danced with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh, I dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song
'Cause all too soon, the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
She says he's a nice guy
And I'd be impressed
She wants to know if I approve of the dress
She says, Dad the prom is just one week away
And I need to practice my dancin'
Oh please, Daddy please
"He's Uncle Wedge's son, Daddy," Caramia said as if that made it all better.
Luke glanced at Mara to find her grinning and knew he would not get any help there. He turned back to their daughter wondering just where the years had gone. Was it not just yesterday she would ask him to dance with her because of some event she had invented? Now she stood in their dining room, asking if she could go to a graduation dance for the junior pilots of the New Republic Armed Forces with Drazen Antilles. Luke sighed, realizing that his baby girl was growing up. Did Han feel this old when he realized Jaina had grown? Luke wondered. He stared at Caramia and knew that he could not refuse. He smiled and watched as her face lit up. She dove and Luke enclosed her in his arms.
"Thank you, Daddy," she said, excitedly. "Do you like the dress we picked out?" she asked straightening and twirling around to show off the shimmering purple dress picked out on one her and Leia's latest shopping trips to Corellia.
"It is beautiful," Luke answered truthfully, though he still felt melancholy because he knew he was not the person she really bought the dress for. "And so are you, Baby Girl."
"Oh, Daddy," Caramia protested. "I'm not a baby anymore."
Luke stood. "You'll always be my baby girl," he stated.
"Help me dance right?" Caramia asked, as if she sensed her father's mood and reverted back to her often asked request.
"Of course," Luke answered extending his elbow to escort her to the living room.
So I danced with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh, I danced with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song
'Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
She'll be gone
Well she came home today
With a ring on her hand
Just glowing and telling us all they had planned
She says, Dad the wedding's still six months away
And I need to practice my dancin'
Oh please, Daddy please
"Look," Caramia said holding her hand out.
Luke caught a twinkle from her finger and sighed. He had known Drazen would ask. The young pilot had flown to Yavin 4 to personally ask Luke and Mara for permission to ask Caramia while she and Ben were visiting Jaina and Jag. It still did not stop the melancholy he had begun to feel ever since Caramia and Drazen had begun dating to rise once more.
Luke knew that soon he would gain a son-in-law but it felt as if he was losing a daughter in the deal. Still he could not help but be happy for the young couple, and he could not stop a smile from forming on his face as Caramia breathlessly began to tell how Drazen had popped the question and what their plans for the future were. He felt Mara's hand rub across the back of his shoulders and glanced at her to find her smiling. He nodded and brushed against her with the Force in thanks.
"Daddy," Caramia said turning to him. "Help me dance right?"
Luke smiled and stood, holding out his hand. "Always, Caramia, always."
So I danced with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh, I danced with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song
'Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
Caramia was totally precious at five and spot on and endearing and loving the rest of the times. Luke's POV is marvelous, as a daddy. Loved Mara's support and warmth throughout. The song fits wonderfully.
I don't know if family mush is a genre per se, but it sure is yummy!!! Luke makes a perfect daddy for a girl.... someone to spoil rotten and to remind him of sweet Mara, (and snarky Mara too!)
Serious and complete huggles--I thoroughly enjoyed this!!!!
That was such a wonderful story for that song! I love the idea of the Skywalkers having a daughter, and what a great way to bring the Antilles into the family!
