	Title: Open Up Your Eyes Author: Irish_Jedi_Jade Timeframe: During VotF and Union Characters: L/M Genre: Angst, Romance, Mush Summary: Just a little bit of introspection spanning time…all related to one very special relationship. From the song “Open Up Your Eyes” is by Jeremy Camp. Big thanks to Jade_pilot for beta'ing Hope you all enjoy...it seems like I haven't posted anything in forever!!!!!! ~*~ Open up your eyes and see these warning signs Breaking through your heart and all the reason of your mind Open up to find your action leaves behind The very hope that's given for the world to feel alive oh And the time has come to realize And see the plan you've been designed for So face the fear of all unknown And see the heart inside So open up your eyes So open up your eyes Luke leaned against the cold stone wall, feeling the myriad bumps and protrusions sticking into his back. Opening his eyes, he glanced across the camp to where Mara lay, head pillowed on her pack. Her face was relaxed, her long lashes spread out on her cheeks as he gazed at her profile. Sighing, he wished for a bit of that peace when she was awake, yet he couldn’t discount the truth of what she had said to him. Curious that such fire and conviction could come from her, when in sleep she appeared almost docile. Her eyes had glinted with green fire as she had exposed the mistakes he had made and how they all added up to the same problem. She thought he was too callous, too quick to use the Force…perhaps she was right. Maybe it really was something to be conserved, like water on Tatooine. Perhaps she was right, maybe his ease and dependence on the Force weakened him…the same way an addiction weakened the addicted, made them vulnerable. Sighing again, he moved his pack and lay down, grimacing at the hardness of the ground. Turning his head he once again looked at Mara. She had shifted, rolling on her side to face him. For just a moment, he allowed himself to gaze unhindered at her…the fiery mass of her hair thrown into glorious disarray, the smooth porcelain of her skin, the beauty of her face. His eyes continued their travels, sweeping down her figure and less than chivalrous thoughts entered his mind…what would it be like to tangle his fingers in the molten river of her hair, to hold her close and feel her body, soft and warm, press against him, what her lips would taste like if he… Shaking himself, Luke rolled over, tearing his gaze from the beautiful woman before him, body cast in harsh angles by the light of the single glowstick that illuminated their small camp. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep. Throw yourself aside and hear the gentle cry Of the voice of peace that gave up all to fill the void inside Give away the fight, release your foolish pride the very bond is broken down you need to leave behind oh And the time has come to realize And see the plan you've been designed for So face the fear of all unknown And see the heart inside So open up your eyes So open up your eyes Closing her eyes, Mara took a shaky breath. She could see the last moments before the Fire crashed…it had flown so straight and so true. Behind her eyelids, she could still see yellow flames that had consumed her ship. Her home. Luke’s arm tightened fractionally around her, and she felt him gently rub his fingers up and down her shoulder. Whispered words…gentle nothings drifted to her ears and she pressed down another sob. Her ship, her everything was gone…sacrificed. Granted, it was for a noble cause, but nothing salved the ache in her heart at the destruction of everything. Her independence, everything that gave her the liberty to be her own person was gone. Pulling away, she dried her tears and got to her feet. “Come on. Now will be the best time to sneak back in.” Luke stood too, but put his hands on her shoulders and stopped her as if he knew she was once again trying to run away, like she had always done. In her ship. She closed her eyes, unwilling to face him. After a moment and a deep breath, she opened them again. Luke was gazing at her intently, and she was struck by the emotion on his face. Under the midnight skies, they had become pools of liquid cobalt, tossed by waves of sadness, compassion, and care. She was caught off guard for a moment…adrift in their tender seas. Gently, Luke shook her, startling her out of her reverie. She swallowed and took a deep breath, willing the sadness away as if the cold air would freeze the hurt that boiled in her soul. “Are you alright?” The raw empathy in his tone caused her to pause for a moment, and a sudden tightening of her chest surprised her as he leaned close, searching her face. Energy seemed to arc between them, a current of…something. Nodding curtly, she turned out of his grasp and started down the slope, eyes searching the path ahead of her and her mind wondering at what had just passed between them. Can you sense the feeling that there's more than what you know? (more than what you know) It's a fire that burns within that only seems to grow (only seems to grow) There's a price that's given and which only love can pay And the time is here and now, don't let it fade away So open up your eyes, open up your eyes So open up your eyes, open up your eyes “Mara, will you marry me?” Surprise filled her as she sucked in a breath…her chest feeling as if it had been suddenly deprived of all oxygen. Mara closed her eyes in shock as feelings she had never encountered rippled across her. Shock, astonishment, fear…but a fire burned in her now, unfamiliar and wonderful. Passion. Devotion. Love. A thousand thoughts flashed into her mind—reasons to say no, long buried fears and dizzying questions. Opening her eyes, all thought seemed to vanish, swept from her mind in a dizzying storm as she saw what brimmed over in Luke’s eyes. Despite the fact that they were both dripping wet, shivering, and quite probably about to die, Mara’s heart seemed to want to leap from her chest. A love as deep and true as the night sky was painted on his face, flooding her with the promise of unending devotion and undying passion. Mara knelt down with him, leveling their gazes. Expectancy filled his eyes and it seemed as if eternity wavered in the moment she opened her mouth to reply. “Yes, I will.” Joy so great it washed over her like a giant wave in the Force, and for a moment, she was awash in it…dancing in its sparkling depths. Luke took her hands and they both stood; he gazed on her with a love that stole her breath away. A gentle smile full of happiness lit his face, trickling into his eyes. He pulled her close in a tender embrace and Mara thought the joy would break her. Everything would be alright. Now, they had each other. And the time has come to realize And see the plan you've been designed for So face the fear of all unknown And see the heart inside So open up your eyes So open up your eyes Terror gripped Luke’s heart as he sloshed through the water, cursing it for impeding his headlong rush to her. Each step was laboriously slow, giving his mind ample time to race through the hundreds of reasons that she would never wake up. Finally, he made it to her, and he plucked her from the water, cradling her in his arms. Her head lolled back and he reached around to support it with his hand. A lump filled his throat as the dread dripped from his heart, crystallizing into frozen teardrops. It seemed as if the words that would decide their fate hung suspended in his throat, terror filled him that something might have happened…that her eyes would never open…that she never would hear the words that he wanted with all his being to whisper to her, to shout from the rooftops, to show her every day for the rest of his life. “I love you, Mara.” For a long moment, nothing happened, and long cold fingers of terror snaked their way across his heart. Silently, he begged her to come back. Open up your eyes. Please.* With a gasp, Mara’s eyes fluttered open. Green, the color of jungles, of grass, met him and his heart skipped a beat at what swirled in their depths. “So, we made it?” He heard dimly her stab at humor but all he could see was her eyes. Filled with love and longing and everlasting devotion. All for him. “Yes.” He whispered. He gently brushed a stray strand from her face, her skin soft and smooth against his fingers. For a moment she looked away, and a trickle of doubt wormed into his heart. But then, her eyes came back as she looked at him through long lashes. Distantly, he noted the way tiny water droplets adorned their lengths like diamonds strung on ropes of fire. Such observations were flushed from his mind as she pressed her lips against his, a hesitant, almost unsure gesture. But then, Luke wrapped his arms around her body, pulling her to him. Even though her skin was cold, she was warm and soft against him, fitting perfectly. All this he noted distantly as he was caught in the wonder of her lips, her touch. She pressed against him, deepening the kiss insistently but with such a tenderness it surprised him. He threaded his fingers through her hair, the fine strands tangling around and around like silk. 	I'm new to the boards, but I wanted to tell you that this fic made my day. VOTF is one of my favorites, and these extended scenes are just amazing! It was all too wonderful for words. 	That was so glorious--that the last line sums up my review perfectly--too wonderful for words--poetic, sweet, vivid, just scratches the surface. I've missed being able to give you a ginormous SQUGGLES!!!!! Oh, my, I am about to read VOTF again--and I'm gonna save this and read it while I'm reading that!!! You are really the quinteseential at mush--it's breathtaking and never overdone--though it'd take a lot for me to think that LOL always. -----signature----- Luke/Mara, forever bound. 	Irish! I didn't know you were working on something like this!! I gotta run, or I'll miss the you-know-what I'm dying to reply to this girl, I'll be back!! EDIT: I'm back WOW GIRL!!! This is SO awesome! Wonderfully mushy and sweet, though perfectly balanced with eloquence and breathtaking description! I had a happy-go-lucky feeling the whole day! For some reason my favorite bit would have to be the first section-- something about the imagery of Mara turning towards Luke in her sleep as they lie next to each other is so... romantic. The unshed emotion that lies beneath the surface, waiting to bubble up, is so amazing to imagine! And in the section following, about the Fire, I love the unspoken word you have there. You could have just flat out said "Something passed between them" , instead it was subtle and hinted at, not even sure if it happened... Love it! Girl I could rant about this for awhile, but I'll keep it (somewhat) short & sweet. I ramble too much, it loses it's meaning. This is so sweet, and you are one of the best romance writers I know. 	That was absolutely beautiful, Irish!! I really like when Luke was looking at her while she was asleep, wondering what being with her would be like!!
