Title: Talon Intelligence Squadron: Not Always Fair
Informal Title: TIS: Book Two
Author: Various Authors from January 2000 until January 2002
Timeframe: 11 Years After the Battle of Yavin
Characters: Original Characters from Various Authors
Genre: squadfic action/humor/drama
Keywords: squadfic, OCs, EU, round robin, action/adventure, humor
Summary: New Republic Intelligence throws together a group of misfits under the command of a disgraced officer. What ensues is nothing short of hilarious, and what becomes of them is nothing short of extraordinary.

Welcome to the second installment of the infamous JC fanfic legend! What you are about to read is a collaborative effort by the original authors to restore the Talon Intelligence Squadron series, the best-known and longest-running squadfic ever to grace the JC with its wild and hysterical antics. Talon Squad Leader created TIS in January 2000, but never in his wildest dreams could he have ever foreseen its growth. It practically took on a life of its own. Two years, twenty large threads, dozens of authors and characters, and a myriad of plot twists later, the series was legendary.

The story has never left our hearts. For those of us who survived all of the threads, TIS remains a subject of awe. Recently, the original authors have regrouped and have dedicated themselves to restoring the series from the beginning for a new generation to take in. While it has been eight years since the series began, it is still as fresh to me as ever. With the passing of TSL in 2004, his story has become even more important to me and many others. In his honor and in the memory of what was and still is the greatest squadfic ever to hit the JC, we, the original Talon authors, are dedicated to restoring TIS to its original glory.

Many thanks go out to my fellow Talons, responsible for editing this second book and supporting the project with their art and suggestions:

Talon Intelligence Squadron: Not Always Fair
Chapter One: "You're not actually getting attached to these people, are you?"

His step was purposeful for multiple reasons; his mind was a twisted garble of emotions. Captain Kevin Ski's stride might have been a touch longer than usual, as if he were extremely excited to answer the summons from the intelligence liaison office. Previous trips to the intelligence sector had never yielded very good results for the once great Kevin Ski. After his surprising demotion at the hands of the Intelligence High Council, the governing body in the intelligence community, Ski never seemed quite capable enough to wade through the red tape or the roadblocks, no matter his qualifications or achievements. High Council had ignored his requests, denied him funding, and withheld even the most common equipment.

Their newest habit is withholding information and endangering lives, Ski thought grimly, potently reminded by his fresh visit to the second floor medical wing of the Nest. Many Talons had been slightly bruised and cut from their mission on Vandor-3, where they had found the Black Fire base, but others had nearly lost their lives. His corpsman, Stone, had assured him that all Talons would make a full recovery, even the severely wounded Trika Adair. Stone had taken care of his own injuries, including hobbling around on an old pair of crutches for a couple of days. Jaren Kai and Rubi Jais were on the road to recovery as well, and it seemed that his squadron was pulling together to make sure everything was running smoothly in the shadow of both tragedy and victory.

That doesn't make the situation any easier to swallow. Ski shook his head, marching up the ornately decorated staircase to the liaison's office. The staircase was made of sparkling marble, the twisted railing on the sides of some of the finest dark wood. Brass lined the wood and formed creative statues at the top and bottom of the staircase. The walls, a starched white, were lined with similarly ornate paintings and fine art. Even some of the Senate chambers couldn't compete with the look and feel of the intelligence sector, which had become more pompous and puffed-up with the uprising of the Intelligence High Council. Some people just couldn't handle power properly, and others were never meant to have it.

Ski skipped the last two steps and hit the third floor, passing both of the statues and the last of the paintings. The third floor of this particular building was merely an entranceway to three different offices of lesser importance. Major Devoe Rosche's liaison office sat at the end of the short hallway, while the other two offices sat opposite of each other at the beginning. Rosche was a familiar officer to the captain, who had spent a great deal of time with the major before his now-infamous demotion. Ski had actually outranked Rosche until the unfortunate event, and the two had been a part of a number of intelligence missions before the intelligence sector had begun to establish separate squadrons for such missions and bureaucracy became king. The two had been fast friends, but their different duties had kept them out of communication for a long time. Rosche was a man married to none other than his work, and there existed no purer an intelligence officer than he. Rosche had earned his achievements honestly, but Ski knew it was only a matter of time before the major was burned as badly as he had been.

Ski burst through the liaison office doors, each step causing the frown on his face to become more pronounced. Major Rosche had apparently done well for himself since Kevin had last seen the man from Corellia a few short months ago. The cool, cozy office boasted every luxury, including a large swivel chair and desk for the major's important work. The startled man turned sharply in his chair as if to yell at the intruder. Upon seeing his old friend, however, his stern face melted, and an unusual smile split the face of Devoe Rosche.

"Kevin Ski!" he stood, arms wide to behold the man. He may have outranked the captain, but he surely didn't act as if it mattered. "Look at you! How long has it been since -"

Ski had continued to walk the rest of the way to Rosche's desk. Without a greeting or warning, Ski pulled his right fist back and swung true, smashing the major in the jaw and following through as forcefully as he could. "Cut the crap, Rosche. Why did you ask me here?" Kevin growled, growing more furious with each breath. "Did you send me the summons to congratulate me and my squad on surviving our first mission? Am I here to listen to you mock my people?"

Rosche, a very calm man, retained his dignity, taking a mere two fingers across his face to make sure he was not bleeding. He stretched his jaw briefly and brought his face back to Ski's gaze. His face had returned to its normally plain visage. "That is an awfully harsh greeting for a man who has called you a friend for years now," he said flatly, standing taller with each word and turning into the major that he was. Rosche had definitely earned his ranking and knew how to act it. "Because of that fact, I'm not going to call security and have you arrested, but you'd better explain yourself before I change my mind." Now it was Rosche's turn to growl.

Ski wouldn't back down. He, too, had earned his previous ranking and knew how to act it. "Don't pretend to be my friend. Not after all that has happened."

Rosche cocked an eyebrow. "What are you talking about, Ski? I have always been your friend -"

"The demotion, the assignment, my squad, and the setup," Kevin interrupted, his hazy blue eyes alight with a passion for defending both his position and his squad. "You explain yourself."

"Setup?" Rosche questioned with a hint of incredulity. The Corellian paused for a split-second, making sure that he had correctly heard Ski. "I have little idea about anything to do with a 'setup.'" The major gave a quick look to his private line and made sure it was accessible in case he needed it. "You're not speaking clearly."

Ski appeared to calm a bit, but still seemed adamant about voicing his opinion. "I just returned from my new squad's first mission, a mission we were ordered to carry out just weeks into our training."

"I've heard and have read Intel's initial data on the mission-"

"I was set up," Ski interrupted yet again. "We were set up. Everything from my demotion to the people in my squadron -"

"Ski, I've never read any details about your demotion because it is none of my business." It was Major Rosche's turn to interrupt. His eternal patience was almost at an end. "The reasons could be many, and -"

"There are no reasons!" Ski slammed his fist onto Rosche's desk, shaking a chrono from its pedestal. "It is jealousy that has pitted the heads of Intel against me. The High Council couldn't stand my standards and successes. The first chance they received any power on the intelligence council they made sure I was never a threat again."

Rosche took a seat, perhaps willing to give his former friend a chance. Rubbing a hand through his clean-cut black hair, he shook his head. "Those are some harsh allegations, Ski. As the intelligence liaison, I've become good friends with most of the members on the council, and I see no basis for accusing anyone of what has happened."

"Take this to heart, Rosche, as if you knew none of them: you’ve a traitor in your midst."

This the major could not take. Devoe Rosche was a man who had dedicated almost a decade and a half to the cause of freedom with both the Alliance and the New Republic. "A traitor? Ski, these are tried and true patriots. Many that now serve on the High Council are veterans from the Alliance... like you, I might add!"

Ski gave the man a very wry smile. "No, you see, these are the men who would name my intrusion team leader and fill the position with a traitor. My squad was set up to find a supposedly non-existent mercenary base when she showed herself. She nearly killed my intrusion team slicer and was about to kill my senior sniper before a risky rescue that nearly took more of my squadron. I have more than a few members recovering from injuries that happened during firefights that weren't even supposed to happen. I can't expect my people to perform half as well as they did with traitors within their teams and with the High Council withholding intelligence."

"I never knew about this base," the major responded matter-of-factly. "The fleet would have known about the base if there had been intelligence about it." Disbelief had begun to set it. He desperately wanted to believe his friend, but couldn't find the strength to accept that the Intelligence High Council had done wrong. "Odder events have happened with squads just like yours. It is merely a coincidence you've found yourself in this situation."

"We're just starting to decode some of the data." Ski calmed a bit more, perhaps having gotten most of his point across. "We do know that the base had been there for at least six months. The earliest transactions are dated with a timestamp of last year."

That strange fact sat Devoe Rosche at the edge of his seat. "Impossible," he said with finality. "There's no way that's true. We've been tracking several mercenary groups since their rise to power... just as closely as the remaining shards of the Empire. You would be talking about a direct manipulation of intelligence."

Ski just looked back at Rosche. He decided not to say more, figuring he had proven his point. Ski actually took a moment to settle himself, realizing his actions for what they were and perhaps understanding that Rosche was probably one of the few friends he really had. Ski stood up straight and took the part of an inferior officer. He was not above showing respect when it was due, even if the whole ordeal was wrong. "Forgive me for my actions earlier. I am more frustrated than normal, and I didn't intend to come in here to assault you. You are the best and only friend I have left in the sector." He took a moment to clear his throat, feeling partially embarrassed at his actions. "I received your summons. What have you called me here for, sir?"

Rosche still looked stunned. About a million ideas and images were on his mind. It would maybe take many, many weeks to ponder everything and many more to come to any conclusions. "I, uh..." He began to search his desk, shuffling through many datapads and even more stacks of flimsies. "Uh, have you heard about the Intelligence Gala?"

Ski thought the matter through with a good sense of humor. "It's tomorrow. There's always lots of food. The High Council usually attends so that they and everyone else can pat themselves on the back. And," he added with a slight smirk, "I haven't been invited in four years." He gave an uncharacteristic wink to his superior. "I've heard a little bit about it."

"Well," Rosche said, continuing to search his desk, "you've been invited."

"What?" Ski was taken aback.

"I received official notice this morning. After news of your exploits on Vandor-3, the High Council gave me one more invitation, an invite for Talon Intelligence Squadron and its leader, Captain Kevin Ski." Rosche settled his chrono back on its pedestal on his desk, only then seeing the invitation that he had been searching for.

Ski's mouth was open. He quickly shut it and began to chuckle. "After all these years, I finally get an invitation with my new squadron. Did it mention anything about mocking my people?"

Rosche frowned, a little perturbed at his friend's persistent sarcasm. "Nothing like that at all. Your people are to be honored for their performance, not mocked. In fact, I've heard it rumored that many Talons may finally receive their officer promotions because of their service yesterday. The Talons prevented Black Fire from spreading further into the Core planets and helped to identify five upcoming terrorist attacks." He paused for a moment, careful to word his next few sentences properly. He truly cared for Kevin Ski and did not want the man getting hurt. "Besides, Kevin, you're not actually getting attached to these people, are you?"

That question set Ski on his heels. "Excuse me?" he asked, perhaps thinking he had heard his friend's question incorrectly.

Rosche knew he had hit a nerve, but he continued anyway. "Look, Kevin, I've heard about some of these people in your charge. You realize that most would be more apt to murder you while you slept than help you, right?"

Captain Ski's reaction was not one that Rosche was prepared for. Anger began to bleed from Ski's face, and he surprisingly pointed an accusing finger at the major. "No. No, you see, that's how everyone wants it to happen. That's how everyone thinks it's going to happen, but it's not happening that way. Everyone wants to see my squadron fall flat on its face, but my people are more qualified to succeed that many that I've led in my career."

Rosche didn't desire to say much more and really couldn't, having already angered the once-great Kevin Ski. A mixture of confusion, sadness, anger, frustration, and curiosity was all over his face. "You speak as if you've known them all of your life," he scoffed, not understanding the fierce loyalty gushing from a man who was forced to take his position. "You should be commanding your own ship, not watching a bunch of misfits."

The captain caught his anger before he exploded. "I do command my own ship," he smartly snapped. "I've got two, actually. I command my own shuttle and I command a modified YT-2000 freighter."

The flat expression on Devoe Rosche's face let Ski know that he had probably gone too far with the sarcasm. Ski stood at attention, ready to be punished for his insubordination. He was ready for the possibility. His people's attitudes had rubbed off on him, it seemed.

"Will you be at the gala tomorrow night?" Rosche asked simply, unsure if he should report Ski's actions or just send the man back to his unruly squadron as punishment.

Ski wasn't sure what the major would do, either. "I accept the invitation for my squadron. Anything else, sir?"

Rosche sat back in his chair, an expression of complete dumbfounded curiosity on his face. "No, nothing more. Dismissed."

Captain Ski turned to leave, then paused. "May I say something more as a friend, Major?"

Major Rosche nodded. "As a friend, Kevin? Are you certain I can be trusted?" he said rather sarcastically for his nature.

"Watch your back, Devoe," Kevin said sadly, as if he knew eventually Devoe would fall just as he had. He wished it would not happen, but as a man whose standards of excellence would eventually call out the injustice of the High Council, Devoe would probably find more deception and manipulation at every corner. "As a friend, Devoe, watch your back."

Captain Kevin Ski left Rosche's office that day with an invitation to the prestigious Intelligence Gala. In exchange he had left a lot of questions. As the door to his liaison office shut, leaving Devoe Rosche alone, the major could only imagine how long it would take to get to the bottom of the mess that had been caused.

Woot! What a great start! Nothing says "HI!" to your old friends like a set of knuckles to the jaw. I'm secretly impressed and disappointed at the same time that Rosche held onto his temper and didn't hit back. I sure hope he's not in on the conspiricy and not another uptight <expletive> <expletive> like that <expletive> Jane. angry

I love the letter you posted in the place of the traitor's portrait. Awesome! applause

silver, yes, the fantasticness is starting up again. Get ready for awesome sauce. mischief

Perigrine, welcome aboard! Glad you caught up to us and are enjoying things. Rosche is quite an interesting character, though, and we'll hope for now that he's still a good friend to Kevin. Sort of weird for a Corellian to hold back like that, but it's Rosche, through and through. And that "portrait" in place of Jane Muir? Trika's got a mouth all her own that won't be stopped. 'Nuff said. tongue Thanks for reading!

Serena, you're back for more! Thanks for stopping by!

Alexis, can you imagine a bunch of misfits getting a prestigious invite to a gala? Oh lawd, there will be some exciting times ahead, for sure. Thanks for reading!

All, thanks again. You all are a fantastic group of readers, and we really appreciate the support and feedback! Same posting schedule will hold as in Book One. End of Chapter One coming on Tuesday. happy

Bah! Blue!! Such demands on your part! LOL. The website is a continual work-in-progress, but you can be assured that as soon as we have something that looks good, we'll start releasing bits of it. I doubt that the larger sections will be done any time soon, but character profiles and website sections that can directly benefit the writers, editors, and artists of the Talon crew will go live as soon as humanly possible. The extras will come later. mischief

Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to get back here next Tuesday for more "storytime with Trika." happy

OMG. How did I miss this episode?! shock

I mean, the Talons have sort of come together to have a successful "first mission," but the urge to lash out is probably lying just beneath the surface... I know I personally wouldn't be able to stand a gala anyway, let alone a crew gathered from rather interesting places. mischief

So, in the spirit of you guys attempting to yank me over to USJS, how much will it take to grab you, Alexis? My attempts to pull in Musical will one day be successful, I assure you. mischief

thinking I have so much on my plate right now, I don't know if I could be a good writing team member right now. Though I do have an interesting idea for a character...

Chapter One, continued:
**********

The soft drone of machines kept Stone company as he continued to check his charts and data. Upon return from their first mission, Stone had given every Talon a full examination to make sure everyone had truly made it out all right. He was particularly concerned about the Talons who had braved the underground base for Jaren's rescue. So far, no one had been affected by any of the chemical and radioactive weapons, and other levels of vital importance seemed normal. He was just about to run a datapad program on two more samples when he heard a soft groan from behind him.

Stone swiveled in his chair and rolled the short distance to the corner cot where a recovering Trika Adair lay. The young woman opened her slanted eyes and took a good look at the ceiling before turning to see her teammate. He merely returned her stare with his own, leaning forward from his chair with his elbows on his thighs. "Good morning," he said, checking his chrono as if to make sure he had the correct hour. "You're not due to be up for another... five standard hours."

Trika relaxed and sank deeper into the cot. She blinked a few times in rapid succession, then shook her head a couple of times. Apparently, Stone had given her a good dose of sedative despite her early rising. "I heard you calling me," she said hoarsely, her voice not fully functional yet.

Stone sat back in his chair and slid back to his desk. He grabbed the datapad he had designated for Trika, then returned to his spot at her side. "I haven't said much for the past few hours," he told her, looking over some of the information he had gathered from his analysis of her recovery. "I told everybody to leave you alone a while ago, and nobody has been in to visit you since then." With a smirk that told her he was trying his hand at humor, he added, "I knew it was too peaceful to last."

"No," Trika said, ignoring his comment and attempting to sit up despite the shaking in her arms. "No, I heard you calling me." She seemed resolute in getting her point across.

The medic frowned, unsure of what to say to his delusional patient. Instead, she continued. "I've been listening to you since she shot me. That's how I knew I would be all right. You did all of this, right?"

Stone took a look at much of his handiwork, which was amazingly grisly even after several treatments of bacta and repair salve. He had practically held together a gaping hole in her gut, all the while attempting to keep the bleeding under control and maintain her breathing. He nodded, not wanting to allow his voice to waver and crack. He wasn't sure what he would have done had she died yesterday.

Trika had moved herself into the cot's corner, finally collapsing against the wall after successfully sitting up. "I knew you were working on me because you kept talking to me. I was going to be all right."

He wasn't sure how to let her know that she had been unconscious for the entire time, and he wasn't sure if it mattered, even. He had done some testing just that morning and had reached the same conclusion that he had a couple of weeks ago. Force-sensitivity wasn't something Stone was prepared to treat or handle. Trika might have been unconscious, but he could not say that she was totally unaware of her surroundings.

"You're all right now, though," he instead changed the subject to the present. Stone actually took another look at her and a deep breath in order to say his next words. "It was really scary for a few very critical moments while we were trying to get out of the base. I thought I had lost you when we first entered the medical ward near the hangar. You weren't breathing, you know."

She looked so weak, but Stone had to admit that it was encouraging to see light in her eyes. "I have you to thank for it all," she said with a smile, a rather weak smile that told him she was still tired. Trika brushed a stray hair from her face before jerking forward suddenly. Wide-eyed, she brushed her hand back through her smooth, red hair. "My hair," she said stupidly, as if she didn't know she had any. "You took out my braids."

Stone nodded, curious about her reaction. "I took them out as soon as we returned and I knew you were stable. I washed your hair and your clothes, actually. They needed a good cleaning. We were all a big mess when we returned."

Trika didn't seem very weak anymore. She had pulled her hair back and stuffed the bulk of it down the back of her knock-around jumpsuit. "Who has seen me since you washed my hair?"

Stone looked more confused than ever. "Just about everybody. I had to run them out so they wouldn't wake you up. Should I have not washed your hair?" The medic couldn't understand anything Trika was saying and almost added it up to yet another delusion. "Do I need to give you something to go back to sleep?"

The woman sat back, incidentally banging her head against the hard wall. She closed her eyes and shook her head. "No, I really appreciate it, actually. I just -" She paused, trying to figure a way to explain herself. "Well, I'll have to tell you about the long-standing tradition of Chinaési hairstyles sometime in the future."

He understood more with just that sentence. "You mean to say that there is a reason behind that absurd style of yours?" he asked with a smirk, which quickly changed into a full-fledged smile.

Trika returned the smile and added a roll of her eyes. "A very good reason, thank you. And one that I have followed for my entire life."

"I'll make a stop by your quarters before I grab lunch and find all of your hair things," Stone offered, motioning at his own hair, trying to describe what "hair things" really were. "You'll need something to do while I keep you here for a few more hours for observation."

"Hopefully not too long," Trika said, her attention coming to rest on the mess that was the corpsman. "You look like you weren't very careful playing around with your surgical tools."

Stone chuckled, checking the bandage on the left side of his face. He moved in to give his teammate a gentle pat on the head. "As long as I can torture you with my awful looks, you'll be right here by my side. We, uh, had a bit of trouble after the whole mission kind of exploded... exploded literally, I guess."

"I'm not interrupting anything, am I?" The tender but bold voice broke through the bonding moment. Trika and Stone turned to see Danya Faithwood standing at the double door entrance.

"Not at all," Stone replied, sitting back in his chair calmly as if to prove it.

"Not unless you think something so entirely dreadful just happened between me and Stone that I would have to hurt him for it," Trika responded quirkily. It seemed her tenacity for humor and sarcasm outweighed any injury she might have sustained.

Danya truly knew nothing had happened between the two, but she also could keenly see how much Stone really cared for Trika. The two mirrored much of what was happening among all of the Talons, and Danya could see that every member was becoming a part of the family that was Talon Intelligence Squadron. "I just stopped by here first to tell you two about the debriefing this evening. Captain Ski says that we are to help him make the briefing room an official meeting room instead of just a bickering room, and he'll start promptly an hour after dusk."

"Is he just going over the mission?" Stone asked.

Danya shrugged. "I'm not sure," she answered honestly. "He seemed like he had something more planned, but I can't be sure."

Stone stood up from his chair and tossed his charts back onto his desk, a cluttered pile of loose data if he had ever seen one. "I think that we will both be able to attend, given Trika's speedy recovery. Oh, that is, if she can get her hair looking ridiculous again, we'll be there."

His patient gave a wry smile back to Stone, finding the energy to retort hard to come by. Danya chuckled, not sure about the exact joke, but accepting more of Trika's odd behavior and looks as time went on. She turned to leave, then turned back around, possessed to say one more thing. "I never thought that I would ever say this," she aimed at Trika, grabbing the woman's attention, "but I'm really glad that you're here with us right now."

**********

Jaren Kai had finished toweling off from a brief dunk in the squad's lone bacta tank. He eagerly put on the rest of his sweat clothes and dashed out of his quarters, making the few strides to Telia Aris's room in mere seconds. He gave a couple of knocks at the door and waited. His wait was very short-lived.

Telia answered the door immediately. The two had been waiting for this moment for what had seemed like an eternity, and as they stood in each other's presence, both knew that something more to their relationship had been ignited below the surface.

She ushered Jaren into her quarters quickly, and the two embraced as soon as the door shut. Their hold was long and emotional, both snipers at one point or another shaking in weakness. Jaren held her close, relieved that she had made it out of the underground base alive. She still meant so much to him. He had trained her. She was his partner. She was his friend. Was she something more? Jaren had fallen for her, again. A million different words came to him, but he could say nothing, content for the moment with her in his arms.

"I was so afraid that I would never see you again," she breathed, choking on the words as she spoke them. "If it wasn't for you watching my back, you would have never gotten captured."

Jaren ran a hand over her brown hair, his comforting touch easing her anxiousness and worry. "It's no one's fault. I am very thankful to have made it out with you. I am very thankful to be with you right now."

Whatever tension there had been before the mission was suddenly replaced with something that had been lost a long time ago. As Jaren and Telia embraced, they understood what had happened. Their tension had been replaced with their love for each other.

**********

The fifth floor Talon lounge was quite a sight to see the day after such an adventurous mission. Ty Flynn and Rinin Altura were recreating the entire destruction of the Black Fire Mercenary Base, complete with sound effects and hand gestures. Kendrick Quinn sat to the side in one of the comfortable chairs, laughing at the two and their apparent gift for gab. Kaiba Cloudrifter, hyped on a large mug of caffeine, continually interrupted the duo and corrected them with her own obnoxious demonstration of the explosions. Most of the other Talons occupied the sofas and couches around the room, and some even had taken up a small space on the floor. In a single day the Talons had completely changed, it seemed, and for the better.

"How's your arm?” Mekial Yrisar asked her partner, Rubi Jais. The spy had been wounded during the mission by holding back Black Fire operatives so that the intrusions team could escape.

Rubi rolled her arm one full rotation. "Much better," she admitted, proving her statement with the movement. "The last bacta treatment really helped."

"I'm trying to tell a story here!" Ty and Rinin practically told the two ladies at the same time.

The two just smiled at each other, friends. They politely asked forgiveness and feigned paying attention to the two animated teammates.

"And then we made a sweep around to the eastern -" Ty started again.

"No, the western -" Rinin interrupted.

Kithera had returned from a side cart in the lounge, carrying a large carafe of herbal tea to refill some of her teammates' mugs. "You two are driving me nuts!" she finally let them know before offering some of her brew to Rubi and Mekial. "What's blown up is blown up, and what's done is done. I'm sure we're going to hear about all the gory details later tonight."

Ty flung his mop of brown hair around to see his team leader and give her a scrunched face. "You're just jealous that you can't tell as good of a story as I can."

Kithera rolled her green eyes and poured another mug for Mekial. As soon as her mug was filled and she thanked Kit, as the squad has come to nickname her, Mekial let loose her own bit of wit. "You're just jealous you were relegated to dumping your spirits instead of having fun on the ground with the rest of us... and you got punished for it. How long do you have kitchen duty for, again?"

Every Talon present, except for Ty, had a laugh about the whole situation. "Very funny." He pointed a "threatening" finger her way. "My brew saved the day, you know."

Milan, quiet under the circumstances of being in a group, took the opportunity to chuck a rather large wad of flimsies at the pilot. Ty took the hit to the face. "You're full of it," Milan told him, enjoying the surprised jerk Ty managed after the forceful throw.

The flimsies hit the floor, and Ty considered picking it up to throw back at him. He thought better for a moment, though, lest he suffer a painful end at the Kiffar's hands.

Then, against his better judgment, Ty picked up the wad and gave it a hurl at Milan.

Several Talons gasped; more laughed. Milan stood up, about to punch Ty through the fifth floor to their quarters on the fourth floor. Danya Faithwood entered the lounge to rambunctious laughter and an oddly playful Milan beginning to chase Ty around the sofas.

No one, understandably, paid her much attention.

She tried to clear her throat for attention. She tried standing there for a while, hoping for some form of acknowledgment. Finally, Danya, her hands on her hips, called for attention with a loud, "Hey, quiet down!"

Milan, even playfully giving chase, had caught up with Ty and had the man by the neck. He gave a pause upon hearing tiny Danya's call for silence and practically dropped Ty to the floor and stood up straight. The other Talons had quieted upon hearing her, and after a brief moment of silence, the only noise that could be heard was a gently wounded Ty trying to get up from the floor.

Danya waited until his groans stopped. "Captain Ski is calling an official debriefing promptly one hour after dusk tonight," she told them. "From what I understand, he's going to go over everything that happened yesterday and more. I don't have any further details, but just be there. I'm going to have datapads ready by dinner time with the agenda and other subject matter."

The rest of the Talons just stood there, or sat, looking blankly at the petite woman. Finally, Kithera spoke up.

"Thanks for the information," she said, breaking the awkward silence created by the suddenly quieted group. "We'll be there."

"Care to join us?" Kaiba asked, sipping on her mug of... well, caffeine, of course.

Danya considered the offer for a long moment, knowing her responsibilities and yet still yearning to be a part of this new group of friends. Being Captain Ski's partner required her to be more than just a hacker, and more than just a wingman. At first, she had resented the extra burden of administrative upkeep in addition to her duties as the operations team hacker, but she had since come to terms with the fact that she could be more of a help to both Captain Ski and the squad if she simply cooperated. Since that time, she had practically helped in all matters of keeping the squad informed and prepped for their training. It was most of her preparation, after all, that had turned what little hope they had had for a piloting system into a reality. That preparation had turned them into the capable squad that assisted in the destruction of the Black Fire Mercenary Base.

She really wanted to be a part of the group, and one day she would... duty called, however.

"I'd love to, but, no," she said, waving a datapad for everyone to see. "I have to get everything ready for tonight's debriefing."

"How about dinner, then?" Kaiba offered, seeing Danya's plight. "I don't think any of us are going to settle before the meeting, and I think Bullwinkle stocked more of that freeze-dried fruit." The evil grin she wore told Danya that the group had already mentioned stealing the loot, another possible mission into enemy territory that could get someone harmed.

Ty had returned to a normal, standing position. "Ripe for a recon, in my opinion!

The dark blonde-haired woman began to nod her head. "I'll double-up on my work and see if I can join you guys." She didn't quite understand the change, and she really didn't care to understand it. At one point in her time at the Nest, she had had little interest in becoming acquainted with the other Talons, but now... was she actually looking forward to taking part in whatever hijinks her crazy teammates had in store? "Call me when Bullwinkle starts to make a ruckus."

Perhaps it was because they understood that they were truly where they were for a reason. Perhaps they knew that their situation was an unexplained fight, but one that they had finally secured. The Talons could not admit they were in the most admirable position or the most esteemed fighting group, but they could admit that their exciting journey had just begun, and it was a journey that they were going to take hand-in-hand.
