Date Posted: 7/3 5:42pm Subject: RE: Talon Intelligence Squadron: Book Two - (UPDATED 07/03 - So, Uh, I'm Awake. Where's My Squad?!)
Chapter Seven: "Where's my squad?"

He shook awake suddenly for the first time in days, the jolt sending a waterfall of pain from his head to his feet. The first thing he was aware of was how entirely painful being awake was. The second thing he was aware of was the host of enlisted personnel wrecking his medical ward.

Still groggy, Kevin Ski blinked a few times to clear his vision. Yep, they were all still there, tearing the place to pieces. "Excuse me," he called hoarsely, flinging his feat over the edge of his cot. No one seemed to hear him. "Excuse me, what's going on here?"

Kevin eyed a tall humanoid female closest to his cot. Her greenish skin matched her military uniform, and her uniform showed several badges of rank and position. "Ma'am, what's going on?" Kevin asked while attempting to stand, the process slow and unnatural. Only as he heard a set of medical shelves crash to the floor did he realize he was half-naked. Covering himself rather poorly with his pillow, Ski regained his balance and reached out to tap her on the shoulder. "Ma'am?"

She turned sharply on her heel to see him, her dark purple eyes cutting him to bits. "And who are you?" she questioned, straightening to full intimidation-height. Ski placed her in her late twenties.

"Major Kevin Ski, Talon Intelligence Squadron. What's going on here?" He frantically looked about for a familiar face and found none. Kevin stepped forward before the female officer stopped him with an outstretched arm.

"Major, this is an official investigation and I cannot allow you to interrupt." Another series of shelves came crashing down. "And I'm going to need to see some identification to back your claim. There's a little droid running around here saying you're the medic, which would make you the primary suspect."

Kevin shifted his pillow to attempt to hide more of his nakedness. "Suspect? Stone? I mean, Flight Officer Talson? No, ma'am, this is my facility -" A table covered in flimsies tipped over and threw its cargo all over the floor. "Could you please tell them to be more careful?"

The female's attentions were clearly more on the "investigation" than on his worries. "You work on that identification before we talk more, Major, or else I'm going to have to take you in."

Ski stood stupidly for another set of breaths, contemplating the words. With incredulity all over his face, he scoffed at the notion. "Arrest me? You're going to arrest me?"

"If you don't go get dressed and get that ident information, I'll have no other choice." She gestured for one of her underlings to escort him out of the medical wing. "I've got a programmed droid with a positive ident on you and it's only a matter of time before we find what's hidden in this ward."

The underling officer grabbed Kevin by the elbow and began to pull him towards the double doors leading out of Stone's lair. "What droid? Where's my squad? What's going on around here?"

She didn't have to respond to the fading questions, and she said nothing. Kevin, grumbling something about the situation being ridiculous, snatched his arm away from the lackey. "I can get to my room without assistance, thanks," he snapped, feeling abused despite the protocol. He wasn't stupid enough to question whether they were official or not. The entire operation reeked of the New Republic Guard.

The underling didn't seem to want to leave his side, though. "I'm not to let you out of my sight. You just head that way. I'll be right behind you," he said gruffly, the tone in his voice matching how disgustingly ugly he was.

Ski burst out of the double doors and headed toward the lifts at the end of the hallway. His head felt as if it were on fire, a result of having slept for the better portion of four or five days, he figured. It didn't help matters much that he didn’t have a clue about what was going on in his own base, but he figured that since he wasn't dead, he had apparently been brought back to the Nest to recover from the bomb that had detonated at the Intelligence Gala. He hit the appropriate buttons for the lift and stepped inside, waiting for his supervisor before sending the lift to the fourth floor.

Taking the next few moments to analyze the man next to him, Ski forgot about the lump of sudden worry that had welled up in his gut and thought to perhaps manipulate some information from the man. "Have you spoken with Lieutenants Rinani or Kai yet?"

The man's bottom lip twitched. "Who?"

"Lieutenant Kithera Rinin, or Lieutenant Jaren Kai," Kevin restated, suddenly having a very bad feeling about the rest of his squad. Who had survived the attack, if any? How many of his squadron had been killed by the reckless Jane Muir? "What did they say when you gave them the warrant?"

The lifts came to a halt at the fourth floor. The doors sprang open. "We haven't seen anyone here except some hobo and a young woman who was with you when we got here," the other returned, following Ski into the hallway and the short distance to his room. "Didn't get her name, and she doesn't know much about anything, either."

That little bit of information set Ski's gaze down the hallway to his squad's rooms on both sides. "A hobo?" Ski briefly thought of Bullwinkle and assumed that he was the unnamed vagrant. "Who's the woman? Which door did she go into?" he asked, fiddling with the control panel to his own room. If Danya was still on the base, he could finally get some answers.

The man growled at the ridiculous question. "I didn't ask and I didn't go looking for her. Just grab your things and get dressed."

The door to his room swished open to reveal one of the most cleanly kept rooms known to the galaxy. Ski hit the panel on his wall and turned on the ambient lights. "Well, is she all right? I need to speak with someone who knows what's going on, and I'd like to know what your investigation is all about." Ski moved toward his bed and the set of shelving that sat on its right side. On the middle shelf would be all of the necessary information to prove his identity.

"In good time," the other grunted, taking a look about the room. He took in a number of interesting awards and medals, noticing the mission names, the awarded titles, and the name of the recipient. This man was apparently telling the truth.

Ski's hand slid across the shelf for the fourth time, his palm only picking up a thin layer of dust that had accumulated there over the past few weeks. "It's gone," he moaned, suddenly finding it difficult to breathe. "All of the flimsies are gone." Ski jumped up with a sudden burst of energy and moved to his closet, on the opposite side of the room.

"What about your badge?"

Ski flipped through several hung uniforms and several stacks of folded clothes that sat on top of an overhanging bench. He rummaged through a basket of dirty clothes on the floor and took another look around the closet space. "I carried it with me to the Intelligence Gala. It's in my dress uniform, which..." he paused, unsure of exactly how badly things had gotten that night, "well, it could have been trashed."

"Convenient," the ugly man replied, rolling his eyes. "But I -"

"Look, you're not the only person without a clue, here," Ski retorted curtly. "I just woke up after being out for days and I want to know where my squadron is. I want to know why my lift and transport identification tags have been taken, and -"

His rant stopped suddenly upon seeing the figure in the door. Kaiba stood there, her face sporting a number of burns and her arms red from some sort of treatment. He also noticed that she was blushing. "Sir?"

Concerned that he was all right? That, yes, but - "Oh, right." Kevin pulled his medical robe further down to cover up his upper thighs, "Hi, Kaiba." Now he was blushing. "Are you the only one here?"

"Yes, sir, and they won't tell me anything." Kaiba looked at the other officer distastefully. "I've tried contacting the others, but our communications equipment is on the fritz. They've done something to disrupt them while they're 'working.'"

Before Ski could question what exactly was wrong with the equipment, the guardsman interrupted his thoughts. "Will you vouch that this man is Major Kevin Ski?"

Kaiba smiled oddly and nodded. "Of course he is! What would make you think he's not?"

"A lot of things don't make sense right now," Kevin mumbled, moving toward his closet. He cleared his throat to draw their attention. "Uh, can I please have a little privacy? I'll be out in a moment."

**********

He had made a couple of stops before arriving at the Byzan Towers, putting Qui-Sein a few minutes later at Miss Corbatt Taliq's apartment than he had intended. No matter. His bottle of Corellian ale and bouquet of flowers were sure to make up for any wrongdoing on his part.

He ran a brief hand through his hair and straightened his uniform, making sure that he appeared like a proper ensign in the New Republic Navy. Qui-Sein buzzed Corbatt's apartment on the holonet system and took a step back as the screen came to life.

"Corbatt?" he called, waiting for the fuzziness of the connection to settle. "It's Qui-Sein. From the Intel Academy."

The sweet voice of Miss Corbatt Taliq rang through the system. "I can see you, Qui-Sein!" she teased playfully. "My window is open!"

The enamored ensign backed up a few steps and peered upward into the evening sky. There she was, her flowing blonde hair cascading down her shoulders in a tantalizing waterfall. Her eyes, the brightest blue hue, looked down on him much like the stars in the sky, calling him into their trance. He had to admit that he was somewhat surprised that she had agreed to see him. That little prank he had pulled with the rest of his classmates had particularly angered her father, Admiral Leran Taliq, who at the time had been at the head of the school. Needless to say, Corbatt had practically been completely banned from seeing him.

Apparently, the young woman was a little more headstrong than her father knew.

Qui-Sein couldn’t help smirking bashfully. "Hey, there, Corbatt," he said a little goofier than he would have liked. "I, uh... I brought you these!" With the grace of a robot, he thrust the bouquet of flowers upward as if to hand them to her.

The young temptress flung her hair back and feigned an overdramatic shock. "Oh, Qui-Sein, they're beautiful!" she gushed, leaning out of her window just enough so that the young ensign could see her beautiful red gown.

It suddenly seemed as if his collar was choking him. He had to remember to check his voice to make sure it worked. "Uh, you want me to come up?" he asked with a squeak to his voice. It also suddenly seemed as if he had not reached the age where his voice had fully deepened...

Corbatt giggled. "Of course! But I have to warn you -"

Before she could get out whatever warning she had, Qui-Sein's name shattered the otherwise calm air of the coming night.

"Ensign Delph!" the voice thundered, and before he even saw the form approaching, he knew he was in big trouble.

Corbatt sulked at her window. "Daddy!" she protested with a pout, crossing her arms in a childlike display of disappointment. "I told you not to come over here right after dinner!"

Qui-Sein cringed and turned to greet the older man. With a salute that begged to be punished, the ensign spoke. "Good evening, Admiral. I was just, uh, checking up on your daughter."

"'Checking up' on my daughter?" Admiral Taliq growled. Even with a graying head and a bit of a desk gut, Leran Taliq was an intimidating figure. "With Corellian ale? What kind of 'checking up' is this?"

"Daddy, it was all my idea!" Corbatt tried to smooth over the situation, throwing the lie out for her father in the hope that he wouldn't shred Qui-Sein on the spot.

The young ensign nodded enthusiastically. "It's true, sir," Qui-Sein said. "I only now got the chance to come see your daughter after the Intelligence Gala."

The former commandant seemed somewhat satisfied with the answer. It was readily apparent that he didn't believe most of it. He shot Qui-Sein a look. "Get out of here," the man grumbled, holding back anger that was slowly rising to the surface. "I don't want you coming back here, and you'd better watch your step. If I see your face one more time, your next assignment is going to be worse than Talon Intelligence Squadron."

I'm caught up on this book now too, a bit quicker than I expected, LOL.

I've gotten to the point where I am automatically suspicious of anything and everything the IHC does. tongue I've had a few bouts of paranoia so far in this book, but I hope for the Talons' sake they turn out to be nothing more than that. wink That just adds to the whole enjoyment for me, though--a sense of who can you trust and what's a setup and what is genuine help? I'm sure I'm enjoying it more than the Talons are, though. Especially since I have cookies to munch on.

It's fascinating to see how Black Fire (including Muir and Carre) has developed into the Talons' nemesis. I imagine each group is going to cause some major headaches for the other while they hash everything out. I'm also taking notes here, since "nemesis writing" is something I've never been good at and want to learn about, and I know this will be a great story to glean knowledge from. grin

I'm really enjoying seeing the Talons continue to develop both as individuals and as a group. Even when Kevin isn't present to hold them together, they manage to do all right. That's the best way to tell that he's setting a great example for all of them and getting them to stand on their own two feet. At the same time, he's not quashing them and is allowing them to be themselves (to a certain degree tongue ) and the squadron is definitely stronger for it.

Speaking of Kevin, poor guy, what timing with his return to consciousness. tongue And not only has the rest of his squad disappeared from the Nest, but now there's the whole angle with the Guard and what they're looking for. I have a suspicion of what it is, but I'm not sure why they're looking... thinking

Would you add me to the PM list, pretty please with a cherry on top? batting

Great job! Looking forward to more! grin

Your wish is my command, madam. You've been added to the PM list. And you did catch up pretty quickly! Thanks for diving on in and reading our story!

Your paranoia is well-founded. I'm not sure even I know who to trust in this story. And as for baddies, TIS has the best. No doubts there. Kudos go to Mara Jade, Emperor's Hand for the creation of Sondara Carre. Some of the best "nemesis writing" comes from her quill/pen/keyboard/blood/sweat/tears, so I'm sure you'll enjoy the writing to come as well. wink

Thanks again, Thumper. See you around the Nest. mischief

Well, isn't that just a fine how-do-you-do for the Major to wake up to.

Still, it's good to see him up and around and apparently not much worse for wear - same for Kaiba. Clearly, some explanation is in order, once he finally gets his pants on, anyway...

Meanwhile, the ensign 'Romeo' is out trolling for forbidden fruit when he should have been there to assist the injured Talons when they woke up. Can't say as I blame him too much, but still, the team comes first and Delph had better learn that in in a hurry.

Wait a tic..

Trika made the anniversary banner?

Nice work!

Hey, Serena! Thanks for reading! I think the next thing on the agenda is for Kevin to find his pants! We'll find out what really happens with everyone tonight, though. tongue

Tirade, welcome to TIS! Things in TIS, if they can get worse or more ridiculous, will. It's the nature of the time warp that happens when you enter the Talonverse. Don't worry. We're approaching the ninth circle of hell, so things can't get too much worse. Congrats on becoming our newest Talon! We're looking forward to having you on board!

L0B0, we'll have to see about Qui-Sein's adventures to find the forbidden fruit... you can rest assured that he's not going to be happy when he gets back to the Nest... possibly a result of activity on base and drama off base. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the nod on the banner. happy

Chapter Seven, continued:
*********

It didn't take long for even more questions to pop up. "My lift tags are gone! You can't tell me that there wasn't official word from the IHC for them to lift!"

"It appears that way, Major," Lieutenant Sharla Palrr responded, sipping on a cool cup of caffeine. The Guard was notorious for drinking disgustingly horrible liquids in their most awkward form. Still watching over the search, the female seemed to have found the squad's lounge and had made herself a mug even before Ski had gotten dressed. Things had calmed down a little bit, and her team was now picking through the wreckage they had caused. Many had taken a seat on the floor and others were crawling through desks and drawers. "I expected to be questioned thoroughly at the door, but when you two were the only ones in the building, we sent back word that your squad had taken leave."

"Taken leave?" Ski asked incredulously. "Where in the galaxy would they just take off for, and why would they leave us here?"

Palrr shrugged, as cool as her drink. "Sounds like a mutiny."

"Now that's ridiculous," Kaiba muttered, having been relegated to a chair next to Stone's desk. Ski had been allowed to stand next to Palrr on the agreement that he was calm, cool, and collected. Kaiba, of course, was too much of a free spirit for the prize of standing to woo her.

Major Ski had ignored the comment, for the most part. "Taking my identification to make things official might make it seem so, but we're talking about the integrity of good men and women. They even took my office droid! No one in their right mind would take something as annoying as he is!"

"And you know that none of them would commit such an appalling crime?" she returned with a certain haughtiness of one who thinks she is right.

"My lieutenants are the only one with access to my room in case of an emergency," Ski explained. "If anyone is above suspicion, they are."

"You know them so well after what, a month and a half?"

"I know them better than I've known many of my previous officers. They are both good people."

Palrr feigned a bewildered look, her attitude beginning to rub the two Talons the wrong way. "I would have thought that such a ragtag band of misfits would have been just waiting for the opportunity to jump ship, I guess."

"They are good people," Kevin reiterated strongly, his tone leaving no room for discussion. "They are all good people. And that's why I need to get into contact with them. Can your people hurry up with the communications lines so we can get back to work?"

It almost seemed like she took pleasure in telling him the news. "We haven't touched your lines. You might want to check on those again."

Kevin flipped his head around to look at Kaiba, who was already moving. "I'll check it from the core. It shouldn't take long," she said, again turning red without the help of the burns scattered along her face.

She might have made a mistake, Kevin thought, or the squad could be in serious trouble. Watching her leave the medical ward, Kevin rubbed a hand along his stubble and only then noticed his own injuries. He hadn't taken the time to study himself in his mirror while dressing, but as he traced a number of scabs from his forehead to his jaw, he could only imagine that he looked like a wreck. He hadn't really taken the time to dress properly, either, and his gym clothes were in drastic contrast to the professional Guard milling about the room. "Then can your people get their mess together and leave?" he said rather harshly. "You said you're looking for something, but you won't tell me, and quite frankly, I don't know that you'll find anything that points to us as criminals or wrong-doers."

The humanoid female turned to view him fully, a tattered, but respectful man. Palrr forced a slight smile, not because she cared for him or his squad, but because she felt sorry for him. "I'm going to tell you something very personal, Major. I've been ordered around and beaten down in this business because of the racist attitudes of many people who still believe this to be an Imperialistic galaxy," she told him, her confession seemingly uncalled-for. "Human males, mostly, like yourself. I've worked hard to get to this position, and I'm not likely to give it up because I can't find a piece of intelligence in this building."

Kevin chuckled a little bit despite her serious tone. "Ma'am, I've no intention to undermine your authority or cause you grief, but this is ridiculous. Your group isn't going to find anything here unless you tell me what it is you're looking for."

Palrr eyed her people's work and mulled an idea over in her head. Her demeanor changed slightly, and Kevin noticed that her shoulders had relaxed from their haughty position. She stalled a few more moments and took another sip of her caffeine. "Can I now tell you something off-the-record, Major?"

Not used to so many confessions in a row, Kevin nodded, but the question seemed weighed down and cumbersome.

She took a deep breath. "I think we're both being used here." It wasn't exactly the most revealing statement, so she continued. "Nothing has seemed right since I've gotten here, and we haven't found anything that even slightly resembles the data that my superiors have told me to look for. I was told a Lieutenant Jaren Kai or Lieutenant Kithera Rinani, one of your lead officers, would greet me, but the only person I found was your cook rummaging through stacks of dirty dishes. I was also ordered not to discuss any matter of my business with anyone but my team because of your people's supposed disreputable conduct."

"Well, technically, you don't know that I'm really who I say I am," Kevin pointed out with a touch of sarcasm. "My tags and badge are missing, and anyone can point out names on the wall and claim that they belong to him."

"Not exactly, Major. You see, the third thing that hasn't seemed right is the fact that the little medical droid running around here has been tampered with. One of my men checked him out, flipped around a couple of wires, and retrieved a small script that was interrupting the normal output." Palrr snickered. "Now the droid is blabbing about giving you some medication for your head and your partner there some salve for her arms. Both of your identities have been confirmed."

"Kaiba!" Kevin yelled, turning as if he was going to catch her. "Kaiba! Grab the security feeds!" He didn't know if she had heard the order, but he figured it hadn't hurt to try.

"This whole situation is a little hard to comprehend, and it's not getting any simpler," Palrr said rather thoughtfully.

Ski turned to look at the woman next to him, his eyes imploring for her help. "You've said it yourself: nothing seems right. Tell me what you're looking for. I can help you or at least give you a little insight into why it's not here."

She took two more sips of her caffeine before he thought she had decided to spill everything. She opened her mouth to speak, then stopped. Her eyes darted to her team, and then back to Major Ski. "Not here," she whispered, then motioned with her eyes that they should move somewhere more private.

Ski took the hint and moved out of her way, figuring that finding those security feeds was most important. As he was leaving the medical ward, he heard her issuing the order to leave.

"Let's clean this up and return to base. I've got some more questions to ask around here, and then we can leave."

**********

Kendrick and Ty had just set a vector toward Lok before getting the call from Lieutenant Kai to report to the cargo hold. The Talons had just fueled up on Duro and were going to go over the specifics of their plan, if there was one to be had. The two pilots weren't the only ones who were questioning the sanity of the Intelligence High Council. Sending in a squadron without intelligence was almost as bad as sending in a squadron with faulty intelligence. They already knew that the IHC knew how to do the latter, so they figured that the higher ups might have wanted to try something new. No sense in repeating something that almost got a few good people killed. This new plan, or lack of one, was sure to be better... maybe kill them all at once.

The two pilots were having a very difficult time keeping their cynicism behind them. They attempted the feat once more before joining the rest of the team and Lieutenants Kai and Rinani.

"Lok's industrial center was the last place of contact that Jane Muir is known to have had with Black Fire," Jaren said, ushering in his pilots with a wave. He had just started the briefing. "Audio signatures have matched her voice in conversations with suppliers from just two days ago, but Intel hasn't been able to place her there officially."

"What does that even mean?" Rinin asked, and the rest of the group was in agreement.

"It means that the place of contact is likely abandoned," Jaren confessed even as the groaning began. "We're not going to find much there and we're probably not going to find anybody or anything of value."

There was a brief moment of silence. "So, uh, why are we out here again?" Mekial spoke up boldly.

Kithera stepped up and smiled her best, feigned enthusiasm. "We're going to involve ourselves in our first planned intelligence gathering mission. We'll be matching local contacts and drumming up some leads from the area."

Another brief moment of silence ensued. Most of the Talons were dumbly staring at their leaders. "That's it?" Rubi said, feeling let down and relieved all at the same time.

"We're not going into a firefight without a clue?" Danya snapped sarcastically.

"We're just going to let the hackers do all the work?" Stone asked rather dejectedly.

Jaren scoffed at the variety of responses, all similar in nature yet diverse by trade. "If I remember correctly, we were all worried about being set up, and now we're being given the chance to do some real recon work. We'll need Danya and Trika on this, sure, but I've got a plan that will split us into three groups.

"First, I'm going to need Rubi and Mekial to work up local identification documents." The implications were obvious. "I want the people who are running point to look and feel comfortable when they are in place. We're going to split the positions evenly when possible because we've got three good locations for information gathering. I don't expect hostilities against us, but we'll be prepared accordingly. Each group will be responsible for a different location on the ground, so we'll split and rendezvous at a set time. Any questions so far?"

The Talons had perked up a little, at least enough to absorb the information being given to them. The more Jaren talked, the more the others were beginning to warm up to the idea of just doing their normal jobs.

"Good," he continued. "The first group will consist of Flight Officers Faithwood, Quinn, Heartilly, Aris, and Yrisar. You five will be taking the downtown district. I expect that any official data, like permits or tax records, would be kept here. I want Danya to work this area from point with Telia running security detail. If Danya needs something, get it to her. If Telia deems any action necessary, listen to it. The rest of you will all be running in the support capacity.

"The second group will consist of myself, Lieutenant Rinani, and Flight Officers Jais, Adair, and Altura. We're taking the warehouses in the general area of the last place of contact, so we might need some slicing to get into those buildings more than general hacking. Trika will run point with my security backing. Again, if she needs something, she'll get it."

"The third group is going to investigate -" A rattling from below softly interrupted Jaren's orders. The slight tremor shook the gathered Talons just enough to get their attention. Jaren's own attention was already on his stand-in mechanics. "What was that?"

Kithera and Rinin were already looking at each other, the puzzling inquiries on their faces clue enough that they didn't know. "Could be a rumble from the hyperdrive," Kit suggested, although the expression on her face was evidence enough that she had her doubts. "Or it could be something worse."

Jaren raised an eyebrow at his fellow lieutenant. "How much worse?" he asked pointedly.

Another slight tremor rattled beneath the cargo bay. Kithera had bent down somewhat as if to get a better listen. "It's coming from the fuel reserves," she guessed, then flashed her eyes at Rinin. "You don't think that there's a leak?" she asked him.

Rinin was already on the move. "Better check it out," he said, then pointed at Kendrick and Ty. "Bring us out of hyperspace. Whatever it is, it is not likely to be resolved on the move."

Jaren nodded his agreement. "We'll continue this later. Everyone be helpful. Let's get this problem fixed." He turned to his computer people as the rest of the crew began to shuffle. "Danya, find H9-0 and see about talking to the ship. We'll probably need to manually -"

The trembling had turned into violent shaking, rattling the Talons from their feet to their heads. All hands immediately went for the nearest bulkhead to steady their wobbling bodies, and several Talons crouched low to the floor. With a shudder and one last brutal throe, the Hawk lurched out of hyperspace on its own, tossing the group about in a ruthless spasm.

The engines powered down. The lights flickered off. The Talons were left in a disheveled heap in the darkness.

"Holy kriffin' frack," Ty managed to let out before groaning. He could not see his position in the darkness, but from the kink in his neck and back, he figured he was turned slightly upside down against the front of the cargo bay. "Is everyone all right?"

The responses came back rapidly, with most able to flip themselves straight within a matter of seconds. "I broke a floor panel, but I'm fine," Mekial said with a touch of cheer.

"I think I re-twisted my ankle," Stone confessed, "but it's nothing major." From the tone in his voice, it was apparent that he was not thrilled at the injury, no matter how slight.

It took one minute for the emergency generators to come to life, and the power system flickered back to half its original power. Adjusting to the dim lighting, Jaren took a look around and confirmed that no one had been seriously hurt. The rest of the Talons were already on their feet. "All right, let's get moving. We need to find out what the hell that was and what we can do to fix it."

Immediately, the Talons began to disperse. Those with instructions were moving more quickly, but those without were still set to make themselves useful wherever they were needed. Kithera and Rinin were making good time down the passageways to the lower levels of the transport. Their frequently visited engine room was below.

"Fuel reserves, huh?" Rinin asked while skipping down two steps at a time. Four brief jumps and he was on the lower floor.

Kithera was right behind him. "Maybe the whole thing. I couldn't tell from up there, and there's something..." she trailed off, sniffing the air around them. "There's something... burnt?"

Rinin cautiously approached the back wall of the engine room, tentatively turning the corner on the hyperdrive and chancing a look at the large area reserved for the fuel tanks. He leapt back quickly, avoiding the large flow of fuel spilling onto the floor. "Kit! We've got a problem!"

The woman was staring stupidly at a smoldering generator in the opposite corner, the apparent source of the problem. "No kidding," she said without any sarcasm, truly awed by the entire situation. "We need to get out of here." Without much prodding, she waved Rinin back to the main walkway, and the two began to head back up the stairs. Flipping on her communications piece, she called to the top floor. "Lieutenant Kai, you need to engage the anti-fire trigger from the cargo hold. The hyperdrive is burning."

He was clearly close enough to the mechanism to reply back quickly. "Are you two clear of the engine room?"

Kithera pulled a seal door from out of the wall and fixed the mass in front of the stairwell. Securing it with Rinin's help, she called back. "We're clear. Seal is in place. Clear to proceed with the trigger."

The two Talons could feel the instantaneous relief from the other side of the door. The fire suppressant system was in the process of wasting the oxygen in the engine room, quieting the wreckage of the hyperdrive and ensuring that the fuel spill would not pose any greater threat. The seal was secure enough that they didn’t have to worry about the oxygen in the passageways of the Hawk being evacuated into space. Knowing what would have happened to the crew of thirteen had the vacuum escaped the engine room was a little unnerving, however. Stories of such mistakes were common among space travelers who flew in older and less reliable ships. Survivors of the blunders were usually accidentally sealed in the airtight quarters of freezers or cooling units in the galley, left to listen to the gasps of the dying. Once the chaos of death had passed and the air from a backup unit had been restored, the remaining crew was inevitably charged with the chore of jettisoning the dead and running the ship on its own. The unique system was worth the trouble in its danger, but barely. Those who lived through a pressure leak usually disagreed with the assessment.

The quick rush of air sounded throughout the engine room. The backup ventilation system had restored oxygen to the compartment. Kithera and Rinin simultaneously pulled on the door and released the seal. A rush of the trapped air met their faces. "The engine room has been restored to normal," Kithera called back to Lieutenant Kai. "We're opening the door now."

"I'm sending some help your way," Jaren returned. "Stand by for an update. As far as I can tell at this point, we're stuck."

Well, the good news is that the major appears to still have his wits about him and there seems to be no sign of any incriminating (i.e. planted) evidence being turned up by the guard unit's thorough tossing of the nest. This Lt. Palrr may turn out to be an ally, or at the very least not another new enemy --- or she could be part of larger conspiracy. At this point, Ski has the right idea: cooperate but don't let your guard down. Now where the kriff is that silly ensign when you need him?

As for the rest of the squad being stranded together on a broke down transport in the middle of interstellar space, if that isn't a recipe for potential disaster, I don't know what is. Somehow, I don't think they are just going to pass the time playing cards & making jokes until help arrives. Which begs the question: where exactly are they, and who else knows about it? If Black Fire has anything to do with this, the situation looks grim. If the hyperdrive is kaput, I guess H9-0 is just going to have to get out and push...

In the mean time, it's too bad Jaren didn't get to complete his explanation of the assignments; I'm curious as to why he would include both ranking officers in the same detail.

FWIW, the image of Ty muttering "Holy kriffin' frack" while twisted up against the bulkhead like that cracks me up. I dunno why, but it made me chuckle.

And so most of the Talons have been let loose in the galaxy unsupervised. tongue That's gotta be an icky, helpless feeling back at the base not knowing where they are or what's going on, though.

Hmm, I don't think my previous guess on what the Guard team is looking for is right anymore. thinking I'm not really sure what to make of Palrr yet because my overly paranoid suspicions keep getting in the way, LOL. I hope they find something useful on the security holocams.

Fried generators are definitely not good. worried And just when things were starting to become quasi-normal for them with a nice, standard mission. I'm glad they're still in one piece, and I'm also wondering where they ended up.

Great work! Looking forward to more! applause

Chapter Eight: "So, we're stuck."

Jaren charged back into the cockpit to see a frantic Kendrick Quinn monitoring a stream of data coming from the engine room screens. Ty Flynn was studying something from underneath the co-pilot's control panel. Quis Heartilly stood at the back of the cockpit, biting her fingernails.

"What's the status up here?" he asked, concerned that the damage to the engine room would have triggered other problems in the control systems.

Ken looked up from his work with a frown that told Jaren the outlook wasn't good. "The hyperdrive apparently overloaded on the last jump. The spill seems secondary, actually. We can't go anywhere until we repair the 'drive and clean up that spill."

Ty fidgeted with a lever beneath his station. A new warning light popped up just above his head. Quis's eyes bulged. "What's that?" she asked, continuing to chew on her delicate fingers.

Ty slipped the lever back into its normal place and the light turned off. He briefly looked back at the woman and then at his hand. "Oh, that?" he confirmed stupidly with an equally dumb grin. "I was just seeing what it did. I've never seen one of those before. Thought it might tell me something new."

Lieutenant Kai groaned at the statement. "Enough fooling around. Kit and Rinin have a real problem in the engine room. They'll need all three of you down there, so hop to it."

It was Ty's turn to groan. He grudgingly stood to his feet and wiped off the bits of dust and dirt from the back of his pants. "You said there's a spill down there?"

Jaren chuckled briefly despite the seriousness of the issue. "Big one, too. The hole will need patching in the fuel tanks. Take whatever you've got up here with you." He gave a curt nod his way and turned around to leave.

Ty contorted his face, grabbing his and Kendrick's tool bags from the tight storage compartment in the back. "I'll meet you down there, Ken," he called as he left the cockpit.

Kendrick didn't bother to respond, only looking at the continual mess spewing from the control system. "This is just too muddled to work anymore," he told himself. He sighed and then snorted. "We're really stuck."

He had forgotten, however, that he was not the only person in the cockpit. Turning around suddenly, he saw Quis standing there, her eyes full of fear. His words had probably not consoled the poor woman any bit at all. "Hey," he said reassuringly, "It'll be all right. We'll get this thing fixed." Telling her a seemingly obvious lie didn't seem all that difficult.

"I, uh..." she began, her words painfully forced under the emotional circumstances, "I don't really feel well." Her face was turning rather pale.

Ken noticed that she had stopped biting her fingernails, but that her arms remained motionlessly tensed beside her body. He stood from the pilot's seat and walked up to her. It took a slight amount of courage to reach for her hand, and when he did, she jerked back. He held firmly, but gently. He took her left hand in his and looked into her eyes, full of complete hopelessness. Only then did notice that Quis hadn't just stopped chewing on her nails, she had stopped because she had nearly chewed them off to the skin. He took a moment to compose his next words. "Quis, we're going to get this thing back up and running again, and there's nothing to be afraid of."

The woman wasn't buying the idea. "We're stranded out here!" she cried, and small tears began to pool in the corners of her brown eyes. "We won't be able to get back on the fuel that's left, even if we can even get the hyperdrive working again!"

He had to admit that she had a very realistic point, but telling her so wouldn't make matters better. "Quis, I'm not going to let anything happen to us out here, all right? I promise."

The words seemed hollow, but it must have been his touch that soothed her fears. Quis, looking as if she was remembering some sort of training, took three deep breaths and visibly calmed. Kendrick gave her a long look to make sure she was fair enough for work, then smiled. "Let's go ahead and get down there. We'll be more useful putting our hands to work while keeping an eye on Ty, right?"

**********

The briefing room was lonely and dark. Ski had brought Kaiba into the loop about all of the developments concerning the confusing mess that was the New Republic Guard's investigation. Palrr had recounted the events leading up to their arrival, and the more the information came to light, the more confusing the whole scenario became.

"First, where is my squad's cook?" Kevin asked, agitated beyond all comprehension. "You mentioned he was on base when you arrived."

"I had a team take your Sergeant Bullwinkle to the Horizon Medical Facility," Palrr said rather nonchalantly. "From his blubbering and obstinate attitude, he definitely had some issues left over from the Gala bombing. His brain scan is scheduled for early tomorrow morning."

"And only the sergeant was around?" Ski asked. "No one else?"

Palrr shook her head negatively. "No one else, sir."

"This doesn't make any kriffing sense," Kaiba mumbled, her head pounding from too much thought, not enough food, and a slight amount of medicine from a certain medical droid. "I'm going to need Danya here to analyze the feed properly."

Kevin took some small comfort in cradling his head in his hands. The coolness of the briefing room made his burns feel better, and pressure from his hands was keeping his headache at bay. "Try them again," he said rather gruffly, referring to their futile attempts to contact the Hawk. "They've got to know that the communications equipment is down and are trying to fix it."

Palrr continued to watch the two Talons work on piecing together both the problem and the solution. Ski twisted around and gave the humanoid female a look that could hardly be forgotten. Frustration and fear clouded his hazy blue eyes. He was clearly worried about his people. "And you don't have any backup feeds?" she asked with an unimpressed furrow in her brow.

Ski risked souring his face in front of the Guard leader. "This base isn't equipped for such tools yet," he explained without shame. "You can already see how little funding we have. We're lucky just to have the regular surveillance in place at this point. Thanks to some of my quick-thinking personnel, we've got that, but little else."

Kaiba had finished staring at the portable computer screen long enough. She sat back in her chair and turned to her leader. "I can't tell anything more about it. I can only guess that someone's wiped the feed before the Guard arrived. Danya or Trika might have something heavier to analyze the feed, but I can only speculate how someone might have gone about deleting any footage, or if someone even did."

Kevin put his head back into his palms again. Why did his eyes ache so badly? "You were going to tell me all of the little details about why exactly you're here," he mentioned to the lieutenant sitting to his left. "You didn't want to talk in front of your people, though." Ski pulled his face away from the table and sat up straight, looking Palrr directly in the eyes. "What exactly are you looking for in my medical wing?"

Lieutenant Palrr shifted slightly in her chair, uncomfortable with the straightforward manner in which the question was asked. "Well, I was told to keep the whole thing a secret. It wasn't wise to let my people in on the whole plan, either."

Major Ski sighed while frowning. "I won't connect you with the information, if that's what you're worried about."

"Please, Major, you're in the intelligence business," Palrr scoffed. "It's your job to keep secrets. But the one that they told me is being kept against you."

Kaiba smacked her head back against her chair. "Well, out with it already!"

Palrr continued without minding the woman's impatience. "My team was looking for medical information, hence our search through your medical ward. Apparently, someone has gone to great lengths to cover up a little detail that would prove that one of your people is highly dangerous to both your squadron and the New Republic."

Kevin snickered. "I'm sorry," he started, attempting to hold back a hearty guffaw, "but I thought you were going to give me something profoundly interesting. You are aware that most of my roster consists of criminals, correct?"

The other frowned at his assumptions. "I'm not talking about past crimes," she snapped back. "Most of your people are relatively tame compared to the potential disaster that this information holds. I'm talking about someone that's been planted in your squadron to cause destruction."

"Done that one before," Kevin shot back with equal spite. "We've uncovered a mole already and have several people with psychological issues that have yet to be sorted out."

The female just looked coolly at the man, her green skin only slightly flushed at his boldness. "You just can't imagine the depth of this, can you? I see it and I haven't seen you or your squadron before in my life!" She sunk deeper into her chair, remembering that she was, after all, speaking with a major. "There is some sort of physical, psychological, or chemical evidence that would pinpoint a sleeper in your squadron."

Kevin's mouth dropped to the table surface. A sleeper? Planted in his squadron? "Why would someone hide that information?" he demanded, his anger bleeding onto his face. "How did you get that kind of information in the first place?"

"That's the part that doesn't make sense!" Palrr hissed, her body sliding forward in the chair. "Why not arrest all of you and test for such a problem? Why not discharge all of your people? I can't answer any of those questions, and that's why I'm assuming that at this point, the information I have been fed was merely a distraction."

"A distraction from what?" Kaiba asked, giving a saddened look at a completed frazzled Kevin Ski.

Palrr shrugged. "I don't know," she replied while looking absently at her manicured fingers. She yawned despite having just finished a cup of caffeine. "It's obvious that the medical droid, the security feed, and your squadron's AWOL status all deem that something is seriously awry. I reckon that in any case, if there was any information to be had, the intrusion that occurred before my team arrived certainly cleared out whatever it was."

Kevin looked back at his lone officer, his face twisted with worry. He softened a bit when she turned her frown into a smile, one that bolstered his spirits and determination. He could have just lain down to die, he supposed. No one would have blamed him, either. He still wasn't sure who else would have taken the chance to pull off running the Talons, but he definitely knew that he was the only one that would have made it this far.

They truly couldn't have picked a better person for the job, and that part made his stomach curl into a knot. It was because he was the best person that he was run through the maze of deception. It was because he was the best person that he and his people suffered. It was because he was the best person that everything, if it could go wrong, would go wrong.

And it was they who continued to stir the soup. The Intelligence High Council knew exactly where to hit him and had the exact resources to do it, including a seemingly obvious connection to Black Fire.

He had gazed at Kaiba for so long that the young woman began to blush. He caught his stare, shifted uneasily in his seat, and returned her smile politely. He couldn't help it, but he, too, began to turn rather red. "I think," he said, turning to Lieutenant Palrr, "that we have a lot of work to do to sort this out, and unfortunately, I'm going to be making a trip to the Sector. If you think you can still find the information -"

Palrr held up a hand, shaking her head at the idea. "I can deal with whatever blow comes from losing the information, if it's even true to begin with." She stood up from the conference table, giving a nod to the two Talons. "I'll remove my team and get out of your way."

She bit her bottom lip, perhaps unable to properly express her jumbled thoughts. "I'm sorry that I can't provide any further assistance. This whole thing is a sham, and right from the beginning I could tell that you and yours aren't being handled properly. I've seen multiple intelligence squadrons with very extravagant facilities and personnel that competently outperform -"

Kevin interrupted, standing as he did so. "I do regret that my people are not treated properly, and the facilities are shameful, but I do not regret my people at all. They are all good people."

His words had a certain finality to them, and Palrr caught it even without identifying his stern expression. "I'm very sorry for all of this, Major," she repeated. "I wish things were different in this galaxy."

Major Ski extended his hand to the female, which she took with a particular hesitance that had been born of prejudice and injustice. Both grips were firm, and although it was she who could have filled volumes with stories of her battles against the minds of men, it was Ski whose crushed expression could have told more. Their eye contact was powerfully revealing. The two were quite possibly more similar than either of them could have imagined.

"Thanks for your time, Lieutenant," he said, letting go of her hand. "I hope that the consequence of what's happened here does not fall on you."

Palrr gave him a wry smirk. "It wouldn't be the first time," she answered, then turned on her heel and left the room. Kevin and Kaiba watched her fully leave, standing and sitting in their respective thoughts.

Kaiba turned to her leader, knowing that he was on the verge of anger, confusion, and fear. If he hadn't given in to all three already, he was surely considering breaking down at any moment. "Sir," she ventured into his thoughts, "what would you have me do?"

Major Ski stared into the hallway a bit longer, his conscious thought not able to determine the best course of action. For being a commander, for being the leader of an entire squad, he was becoming very annoyed with his indecision. "I'm going to take a walk to the Sector and get some information," he mentioned almost absently, as if he was talking to himself. He spun about slowly to look at her eager expression, something that almost made him step back. How can she be so hopeful at a time like this? he wondered. Regardless, the enthusiasm bolstered his intentions and gave him renewed energy. "I'll need your help, though. Go ahead and gather the communications equipment we'll need to keep trying the Hawk. I'll want you to continue contacting them while we're away."

"Roger that, sir," Kaiba responded, gathering her things to leave. "I'll rummage through the spare stuff in the conference rooms, too." She turned toward the door and –

Crash!

Qui-Sein Delph had just rounded the corner in a shocked rush, smacking Kaiba head-on and sending small electronic equipment flying. Kevin watched the entire collision with some amount of curiosity. Kaiba jumped back rather suddenly, and Qui-Sein turned into a scatterbrained junior cadet again.

Qui-Sein winced at the collision as the equipment clanged noisily to the floor. "I'm so sorry," he said, his mouth agape at the mess. He began to kneel on the floor to pick everything up. "I, uh... sir? I mean, good evening, sir. You two are up! W-What's going on here?"

Kevin cocked a single eyebrow at the young ensign, not bothering to attempt summarizing the situation for him. "I don't know, Qui-Sein," he shot back with a sarcastic twist, a new talent acquired from his people. "Why don't you tell me what's going on here?"

Fumbling with a spare comm unit, Qui-Sein slowly stood back up and began to hand the equipment back to Kaiba, who was smirking slightly at the ensign's embarrassment. "The Guard is downstairs messing up the medbay, sir!" he told Major Ski. "I thought they had all left for the evening. They said they were finished!"

"What?!" Kaiba asked with an edge of frustration. "You just let them into the Nest?"

Qui-Sein shook his head. "No, ma'am," he said before he could think about it. He again mishandled a headset. "I mean, yes, ma'am, but not them. This is a different division of the Guard."

"On whose orders did you let them in?" Kevin questioned. He took several steps toward both the door and toward Qui-Sein, who noticed the quickening pace on his superior officer.

The young ensign shoved the last bit of equipment into Kaiba's arms and prepared to be verbally lashed. He stood up straight and reverted to every bit of military training he could muster for the event. "Sarge said that we were to expect some visitors, and that I was to let them in to do their business and then let them back out. I locked up before I left for the evening, sir!"

"Apparently not," Kevin mused, a frown on his burnt face. Or maybe something else is occurring behind the scenes. The major turned to Kaiba. "Get the rest of the comm equipment. Let's get going." He then turned to Qui-Sein, who was still looking ridiculous at attention. In a move normally reserved by his mother, Major Ski grabbed Ensign Delph by the ear and pulled him into the hallway.

"And as for you, you're going to tell me everything that happened, step by step," Ski said, ignoring the slight cries coming from his catch. "I want names, descriptions, and exact protocols, you understand?"

Ensign Delph followed Major Ski down the hallway and toward the lifts, attempting to remain composed despite the rough tug on his ear. "Yes, sir!"

Major Ski pushed the button to call the lifts to the third floor. His destination in the Sector? He didn't quite know yet, but he did understand that something had to be done, and it had to be done now. "Something's wrong on both ends of this mess, and I intend to find out every detail."

What a glorious fracking mess this has turned out to be. The Talons are in it up to their collars, and practically nobody has any idea what the heck is even happening. All I know is that Delph has got some explaining to do, and right about now would be a good time for some much needed enlightenment.

What's up with Quis freaking out like that anyway? Methinks there is more to that act she just put on than meets the eye.

Oh well, we may be utterly and completely lost, but we are making good time... silly

At least I was LMFAO @ Ski dragging Qui-Sein down the hall like a spoiled toddler. That was totally hilarious laugh
