“Is that a lightsaber in your pocket—or are you just happy to see me?”

Luke froze in mid-step. He would know that voice anywhere, but he hadn’t heard from her in months. It couldn’t be. Slowly he turned around and raised his eyebrow at the owner of the voice. “Mara, fancy seeing you here!” He made a quick appraisal of her and came to the conclusion that she had been gone entirely too long.

Mara snorted and with a sly grin, said, “I don’t think you answered my question, farmboy.” She took a few steps closer to him and she was clearly evaluating his appearance. “You look like you haven’t slept in a month.”

Her observation although blunt, wasn’t far from the truth. He grinned sheepishly. “Oh you know me, trying to save the galaxy one person at a time.” There was a slight pause. “Care to join me for lunch? I was just heading over to grab something.”

She shook her head and declined. “Actually, I was kind of hoping you might have a couple minutes to talk.” She glanced around the large hall that they were standing in with young Jedi scuttling from place-to-place. “In private.”

Luke let out a breath and nodded. “Sure thing, just follow me.” He began to lead her through the curving walkways to his office. She fell in step next to him and he contemplated asking her where’d she been the past few months. He’d tried to get ahold of her a few times, but when she wanted to be unavailable, she was the hardest one to pin down.

He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. She looked really good. Healthy, happy, two things he hadn’t seen Mara Jade looking the last few times he’d crossed her path. She was sporting the tight black leather pants that were her trademark, along with an olive blouse that off-set her brilliant red hair. To finish her ensemble, she had her trusty black leather boots and a matching belt, surprisingly with a lightsaber hanging at her hip and her blaster suspiciously absent.

Luke reached his office door and palmed the activator. The door slid open and he waved his hand at the open chairs in front of his desk before taking a seat in his chair. Their eyes met for an awkward moment before Luke broke the silence. “How’ve you been? I tried to get a hold of you a few times but nobody knew exactly where you were.”

Mara looked guilty for a second, or at least Luke thought she had. It was probably just his imagination. “I just needed some time to clear my head, figure things out.” She made eye contact. “I needed to be alone.”

Luke broke the eye contact and glanced at his desk. He decided to just cut to the core. “So what’s up, Mara? What do you need to talk to me about?” When she didn’t respond immediately, Luke looked back up at her. Suddenly, the confident and controlled Mara he had always known was gone and in her place sat a lookalike who was nervous and shy. He decided to just give her a minute to collect her thoughts. Whatever it is, it must be something big.

She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. “I’ve been thinking a lot lately.” She paused. “Like a lot, a lot.” She glanced up for a moment, but her eyes found the wall behind him much more interesting. “I’ve been thinking about the Smugglers’ Alliance, Karrde, the Academy.” She took a breath. “You.” Her eyes found his for a moment and something happened. Luke wasn’t sure exactly what had happened, but something had just changed. And with that change, came the reemergence of the fiery, confident woman he knew.

“I just wanted to let you know, that I’m ready. I’m finally ready.” Luke resisted the urge to interrupt and ask precisely what she was ready for. He was sure she would clear that up. Luke caught sight of her right hand resting on her lightsaber and abruptly, he knew what she was ready for. She took a deep breath. “I resigned my commission with Karrde and the Smugglers’ Alliance. I’m ready to figure out this Force stuff.” Luke fought a grin. “So, I guess what I’m saying is, do you think that I could become a Jedi?”

Luke didn’t hesitate in his response. “Absolutely.” Mara rolled her eyes at his enthusiasm. He just laughed at her. She joined him for a moment, but then Luke sobered. “You know, I’m really glad that you’ve decided to give this a shot. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“Luke,” she tried to cut him off.

“No truly, Mara, I have been waiting for this day since I gave you that lightsaber.” He gestured to her hip and she raised her brow.

“So tell me, Master, think you can handle me?”

Luke’s eyes got a mischievous glint. “Oh, I can handle you, Jade. The real question is, can you handle me?”

She quirked her lips. “Is that a challenge, Skywalker?”

Luke smiled and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. “Take it as you will.” The look she gave him was priceless.

“Fine,” she said smiling. “Let’s test this theory.”

Luke stood from his desk and gestured to the door. “After you,” he chuckled.

Mara stalked from his office and headed to the nearest sparring rooms. She gestured him in first. Shaking his head in amusement, Luke entered the room with Mara at his heels.

They lined up across from one another and removed their lightsabers from their clips. Luke saluted Mara with his and then it snapped to life. Mara nodded back at him, but didn’t ignite her saber yet.

They began to circle one another, but Mara’s saber still wasn’t lit. Luke hesitated for a moment more and then made his move. He swung his saber high across her body, but before he even got close she was spinning out of the way and kicking his hand. The lightsaber went flying across the mats and suddenly, Mara’s blade was lit and under his chin.

Luke’s eyes were wide. He had underestimated her. She’d been practicing. “Point,” he conceded. Mara’s eyes were filled with pride.

Her lightsaber didn’t move. “Underestimating me, Skywalker?”

Luke called his lightsaber back to his hand and in the blink of an eye, their positions were reversed with Luke’s blade under her chin and her blade flying across the room. “Nah,” he said, pulling away. “I just didn’t want to look too cocky.”

Mara rolled her eyes as she called her saber back to her hand. They parried and slashed, neither wanting to give ground. Mara struck with lightning speed. She swung the saber low to the left and kicked him with her right boot. Luke spun out of the lightsaber’s way and caught her boot in his left hand. Mara struggled on one foot
for a second before she reversed her momentum and threw her into weight onto Skywalker.

Luke hadn’t expected her move and was thrown off-balance. He fell to the floor with a thud, losing his lightsaber and her foot in the process. But Mara hadn’t anticipated him falling so quickly and her momentum brought her down right on top of him.

Luke was sprawled on the floor, chest heaving, with Mara on top of him. Every inch of their bodies were touching and Mara quickly leaned up with her hands on either side of his head. “I think I win,” she said, looking down at him with an air of pride.

Luke barely registered what she had said. He was too busy staring into her mesmerizing emerald eyes. Say something, he thought to himself, but yet he could think of nothing but the fact that Mara was still on top of him and that her lips were a whisper away.

He opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by an all too familiar voice. “Sorry to interrupt.”

Mara’s eyes went wide at the voice and scrambled off him and to her feet. “Don't kid yourself, Solo,” she scowled as she marched out of the room.

Luke sat up and raised his eyebrow at his brother-in-law. “Think you could’ve interrupted at a worse moment?!"

Han laughed. “Hey, it’s payback for all those times you interrupted me and Leia, kid.”

Hope you enjoyed. happy

I really liked this Mara and Luke scene. You knew that sparks were going to fly between the two and I can't believe Han walked in on them, just when Luke was going to say something to her. rolling_eyes

I'm back and I'm so sorry it took so long Becky.

This was great as your L/M always is. You write both as if I were reading it out of a book.

And, yeah, I think Luke can handle her? wink

And this is a good timeframe for them..when they're still unsure of their feelings and there is still some tension between them, but they're so close to working through it. peace
