STAR WARS – Jedi Generations Book 1: Rebirth

Chapter 1: Captured

There was no conversation between the hooded figures as they gathered around the round table. There was no need for useless conversation; talking was highly overrated. All positions at the table were not yet filled, so the meeting would not begin
Gathering here was always a risky venture, but if things were to work out the way they wanted them to, meeting in a secret location on the very planet they sought to conquer was necessary. The government was too busy rebuilding to notice them, and the diminished Jedi Order was also too busy to detect them. Now was the time to move forward without attracting too much attention.

They stood in their proper locations around the table hiding their faces in the shadows of their cloaks. Finally, the final member entered the dimly lit room. When the final member took her place at the table, all the members became more alert.
“What is the status of our operation?” a female voice came from the hooded figure who was the last to arrive.

“We are ready to begin, Number One. We have our marks selected. If any of our operations fail, we have back up strategies in place. Either way, the Jedi will not catch on immediately, and by the time they figure it out, it will be too late.”

“This is a good start, Number Three. Even in her limited capacity, we do not want to evoke the wrath of the Chosen One as of yet. We must weaken the Jedi so we can commence phase two of our plan.”

“Agreed,” the members said as one.

* * * *

Jacen Solo was now a newly christened Jedi Master, though he had no apprentice by his side. That was fine as far he was concerned. He would rather be alone during his travels. He didn’t have someone nagging him everywhere he went and did not have to be concerned about someone else’s safety other than his own.

His travels had brought him to the planet of New Alderaan. Actually, that wasn’t true at all. The strangers pursuing him, as he could feel in the Force, was what brought him to this planet. His true destination had been Dantooine where he believed he would find a likely candidate to be trained as a Jedi. He had been trailed ever since he left the planet of Naboo, and yet he still could not shake these guys. They had not made a move on him as of yet, but he could feel their anticipation and their patience: an ambush was inevitable.

Coming to a populous planet like New Alderaan seemed logical at the time. He could walk through a crowded city and hopefully lose them, but they were professional trackers. They could have been bounty hunters, but he sensed that there were a handful of them following him. That could only mean one thing: Jedi Hunters.

Jedi Hunters were in the same league as Bounty Hunters, but they are highly trained, equipped, and focused on capturing Jedi. No one has figured out why they have singled out the Jedi; all he knew that his family have encountered them numerous times through the years.

His twin sister, Jaina, was the first to encounter this clan. She aided Kyp Durron to help find one of Jedi apprentices that had gone missing. The Jedi Hunters had captured Kyp and with the help of Aunt Mara, Jaina went in and rescued him and the missing Jedi. That was the day Jaina left the Jedi Order to follow in their mother’s footsteps into the realm of politics.

The next encounter was the first encounter that proved to be deadly. His younger cousin, Jacina Skywalker, was out to gain her knighthood when she was kidnapped by the Jedi Hunters and sold to an underground arena fighting organization. She was forced to fight to the death for the entertainment of hundreds of people. That was where she learned some of her unique fighting skills. Uncle Luke and Mara took the Jedi Order and went in to rescue her and the other fighters imprisoned and forced to fight against their will. The attack went well until one of the Jedi Hunter went to kill Jacina but instead, Aunt Mara used her body as a shield to protect her daughter, killing her in cold blood. For many years since, Jacina had blamed herself for her mother’s death.

Then there was Tojar, the Jedi Hunter, hired by Jabelleta the Hutt who was in league with Sithious. Tojar kept popping up during that whole war with Sithious and it was there he and his younger brother, Ani, learned that it was he that was behind the assignation of their mother and father.

After the war, no one had heard from the Jedi Hunters. Jacen had hoped that they would leave the Jedi alone after Sithious’ reign of terror, but it appeared that they had not learned their lesson. Here they were once again.

Jacen had his hood up over his head as he stealthily moved through the people of the capital city. The city was beautiful with white stone buildings, lots of trees and plant vegetation around the sidewalks and streets. The markets up and down the streets were teaming with life as if it was a holiday, but based on what he had heard, this was normal everyday life. Right now, the crowd was his only line of defense. At least the Jedi Hunters had some sort of morals, not willing to put the innocent at risk, but how deep was their patience?

No, this was a wrong move on his part. It was wrong for him to use the innocent for his protection. There was no telling how patient the Jedi Hunters were. The last thing he needed was for them to use the people to get to him. He had to lure them away.

There was one place in mind that he knew would do nicely. Keeping his identity to himself, and not attracting any undue attention, he stealthily and swiftly swam through the ocean of people, using the Force to keep a lock on the Jedi Hunters who were pursuing him. They had one advantage over him which allowed them not to lose track of him. Their armor, much like the one wore by the bounty hunter, Boba Fett, was not common attire amongst the Alderaanians. Seeing the visitors wearing them caused them to separate and give clear passage towards him.

Swerving through the crowd, he reached one of the city’s hangers. Taking a quick glance behind, he waved his hand in front of the motion detector and the door slid open for him. The hanger was completely full with various different spacecrafts. There were but a handful of pilots and droids at several of the shuttles.
This will have to do.

Using the Force, he reached out to the few living souls in the hanger and tried to implant the idea of leaving the hanger for an errand. Most of them bought into his little mind trick, but there were still a few of them, probably pilots or smugglers, who were anything but simple minded. There was enough walking space in the hanger for them to get out of the way when the time came.

He stood there in the middle of the open space as he allowed himself to meditate in the Force. He allowed the Force to flow around him like a river that he was standing in the middle of. He allowed it to strengthen and quicken him as he prepared for the confrontation. His hearing was enforced with the Force as the hissing sound of the door sliding open alerted him that the time had come.

The metal-tapping-on-metal clanging noise confirmed that they had at last arrived. His heart kept its pace as he waited for them to make the first move. He was not going to be the one who started this confrontation. The tapping had come to a stop. From the sound, Jacen read that they did not dare get too close to him.

At least you were smart enough to keep your distance although it would have been smarter if you had left me completely alone.

Click-click! That was the sound of the confrontation beginning. His eyes shot open and his saber flew off his belt into his hand as he spun around in time to deflect a blaster fire meant for his back. The shot was easily swatted away.

The fully armored hunter stood defiantly, keeping his weapon pointed towards him. The Jedi Hunter made no other attack towards Jacen, which alerted him of another impending danger behind him. He spun around to swat away another blaster fire. Two more Jedi Hunters had come from the secondary entrance to block any way of escaping.

Interesting move. It seems they had lured me here intentionally.

After taking the shot, the two new Jedi Hunters had taken shelter behind a shuttle. Knowing how they fight, he knew that he was in trouble. He sensed a major threat behind him. His cloak twirled behind him as he turned to see a spiky round device in mid-toss ready to land half way between the first Jedi Hunter and himself.

Force! I hate those things!

With a shrug of his shoulders, his Jedi cloak dropped to the ground. It only proved to be added weight that was only hindering him. He took a super leap up, nearly able to touch the top of the hanger, as the device opened and threw hundreds of pin-sized saber darts. The pin-sized saber darts, originally meant for him, flew past underneath him harmlessly. The first Jedi Hunter quickly raised his blaster rifle up and fired at him still in mid air.

Moving his blue blade until it was nothing more than blur, deflected each and every shot until he was able to land gently on his feet. The original hunter continued his attack on Jacen not letting his finger up from the trigger.

Jacen angled his blade perfectly to bounce the blaster fire back at the hunter, hitting the blaster rifle and knocking it out of his hand.

A silent alarm went off in his head telling him to duck. He obeyed just as the tip of a red saber whip snapped over his head. A quick angle-roll helped him avoid the whip as he landed where he had stood at the same time turning him around to face the two other hunters. One of them was nowhere to be seen, which concerned him slightly, but he had to focus more on the hunter with the saber whip at that moment.

The hunter went to snap his whip once more, and Jacen responded my twirling his light saber in front of him. The saber whip made a sizzling noise as it tried to wrap itself around the blade. Before it could take hold and burn out his only weapon, he ceased his twirling and tugged as hard as he could, pulling the weapon out of the Jedi Hunters hand and instantly causing the weapon to deactivate.

With that danger now over, Jacen turned only to find himself face to face with the first Jedi Hunter that had moved in for the attack. He could not read the facial expression through the helmet but Jacen did not need to to know the Jedi Hunter wanted a hand-to-hand combat match. Remembering that his light saber could not penetrate the armor worn by Jedi Hunters, Jacen knew that he had no other choice in the matter.

Despite the safety the armor provided, the hunter took no chances and knocked his saber out of his hand. Okay, if it’s a physical fight you want, I’ll be happy to give you what you want.

The armor slowed him down as Jacen expected it would, as the Jedi Hunter went to break his nose. Unhindered by the hard metal armor, Jacen raised his right arm and tangled it around the hunter’s arm, temporarily immobilizing it enough to give him a free punch. In order not to break his fingers or his fist, however, he shoved the bottom of his left palm right into the helmet’s face place, causing the Jedi Hunter to jerk his head back imaginably painfully to his neck.

Making it a fair fight, Jacen released his arm and allowed his adversary to make another attack. Jacen could swear he could hear a frustrated growl from behind the mask as the Jedi Hunter swung hoping to slap his heavy arm piece across his face.

Almost mockingly, Jacen caught his arm and twisted as hard as he could, flipping the Jedi Hunter on his back. Jacen reached out and summoned his lightsaber which was only happy to oblige. It flew into his hand and he ignited it without hesitation. He pointed to the hunter’s neck only to find that the helmet had flown off as he landed on his back. It was not a he that was now on his back…It was a she.

She looked bitterly and angrily up at him with her ice cold blue eyes. Her fire-red hair cut very short with a patch of her hair above her fore head forming a small wave which ended just over her left brow.

All this time, he was fighting a she? Taking a step back, he was unsure about what to do with her. He was still getting over the fact that he was fighting a woman.

He failed to pick up on the alert going off in his mind and suffered the consequences. An electric shock emanated from his back. Every inch of his body became immobile and his knees could no longer hold his weight. His body fell to the side of the female Jedi Hunter before everything went dark.

Sorry for the delay! I just got the second chapter back from my beta reader, and here it is!

Chapter 2: Ambush

Climbing out of the shuttle proved to be much harder than it was during her early years as a fighter pilot for Rogue Squadron. Now, Jaina Solo was fighting against time and was clearly loosing. Her hair was more grey than brown. The wrinkles on her face told the stories of many hard fought battles that she had survived. With any luck, though, she would not have to live through another one.

The repairing of the Jedi Temple was going smoothly. Hundreds of construction droids have been working mercilessly on the temple for a year now. Of all the buildings that suffered the most damage during the war against Sithious, the Senate Dome and the Jedi Temple had sustained the most damage. Besides those two buildings, over sixty percent of the damage the planet had sustained had been managed.

Jaina slowly walked down the large columned passageway. The Jedi Temple was always one of the most intimidating places to visit, even for a former Jedi Knight like herself. The materials, the landscaping, and the height of the temple all demanded reverence and respect towards the Jedi Order. Even a Sith would never dare step into the temple. The temple emanated a powerful presence as it also stood defiantly and proud.

As she walked down the gigantic corridor, she felt like she was moving very slowly, but that was just one of the illusions that the Temple usually played on visitors. She paused for a moment, in front of the entranceway to the training room. There, she watched a handful of Jedi students, ranging from age 5 to 12 working on defensive saber techniques. The five year old she knew as Brill Kanture. Jaina’s cousin, Grand Master Jacina Skywalker Mars was personally mentoring the young child herself. Jacina felt some sort of connection with the child that Jaina could not understand. What was bothering Jaina right now, though, was seeing Brill, who was only five years old, wield a miniature lightsaber.

“I’m sorry for keeping you,” Jaina’s cousin slowly came wobbling up to her, seemingly out of nowhere. “As you can see, it takes me a little while to get to where I want to go.” Jacina placed both her hands on her bulging belly.

Jaina laughed as she carefully embraced her younger cousin, who was still young and vibrant, and now teeming with life inside of her. “It’s been too long. I wish I was able to come and visit you more often.”

Jacina waved her hand in the air. “You’re busy building a new government, I understand that. So, have you been voted into the top office position yet?”

Jaina shook her head sternly. “I have no interest in becoming Chief of State. I’m too old for something like that now. The highest position I would be willing to take is Ambassador.”

“How about a title for our new government?”

“Well, we are about to vote on that. I think the one that is favored the most right now is just the Imperial Republic Alliance or RIA for short, but never mind about that right now,” Jaina replied. “Your due date is coming up pretty quickly.”

Jacina nodded, clearly anxious for this period of her life to be over. “It’s not that easy carrying twins.”

“So, you and Gideon decided to know what you are having,” Jaina smiled, half mockingly.

“Oh, after the ordeal with Sithious, Gideon and I have had enough surprises to last us a century.”

The two cousins chuckled joyously together. “So, twins you say?”

“Yes: a boy and a girl.”

“Have you two found any time yet to discuss names?”

The glow on Jacina’s face was a sure sign to Jaina that it was not going to be much longer before she popped them out. “Actually, we have chosen the names. Gideon is being very gracious and allowing our children to carry the Skywalker name so that my family’s name can live on.”

“Really? Somehow, the galaxy would not feel right without a Skywalker.”

Jacina nodded. “Their names will be Liam and Rene.”

“Liam and Rene Skywalker. They sure do have that Skywalker ring to them.”

“Jaina, this is a pleasant surprise,” came the rugged voice, which reminded her of her father’s. Gideon Mars joined the two of them from the training room. He neatly kept and his facial hair trimmed for once. He looked half his age now without that beard and mustache.

“Gideon,” Jaina took a step towards his cousin-in-law and embraced him tightly. “How have you been?”

“Keeping busy with these squirts. I have to tell ya’, I’ve never, in my life, ever thought that I would be training children.”

“It’s a big adjustment from being a con-artist, I suppose.” Jaina couldn’t help at laugh at the irony. She could only imagine her father having to make that adjustment when he had joined the rebellion against the Empire.

“Yea, I’m telling you, sometimes it’s easier to deal with someone who wants to kill you than it is dealing with someone who’s age you can count with one hand.”

“If I may make a comment,” Jaina straightened up to get serious. “Do you really think it’s safe to put a lightsaber in the hand of a five year old? Don’t you think that’s a little too young?”

“Oh, you are going to love this,” Gideon smirked, obviously knowing something she did not.

“Hush, you!” Jacina slapped him lightly on his upper arm. “The lightsabers that they are using are specially made. I like to call them safety sabers.”

“Safety sabers?” She was instantly intrigued. Jaina never heard of such a device.

“My wife is brilliant!” Gideon could not hold back the enthusiasm any longer. From the look of Jacina’s face, she submitted to allow him explain it to her. “She made these specially made lightsabers strictly for training purposes. Check this out!”

Gideon just happened to have one of these safety sabers attached to his belt next to his actual weapon. The handle looked exactly like your everyday Jedi weapon except this one was smaller to fit into the hands of a child. Gideon pressed a button on the perfectly carved durasteel handle and it released what appeared to be your average glowing saber blade.

Jaina almost had a heart attack right there when Gideon grabbed the glowing blade with his right hand and pulled the blade away as if he was slicing the palm of his hand open. Her nerves were soothed, somewhat, when he showed her the palm of his hand to show no damage to his skin at all.

“Incredible!” Jaina was more than impressed by the demonstration.

At that point, Gideon started showing off again as he slapped his right ankle with the bluish blade several times. The blade didn’t even penetrate the cloth or the boot. “The only damage a kid can do with this thing is give someone a nice bruise. You can’t even slice toast with this baby.”

“It handles just like your normal lightsaber, and it makes for an excellent tool for simulating a duel.”

“I have to admit that I feel much better now,” Jaina laughed. “When I saw Brill with a lightsaber, I was ready to give you a stern talking to; Chosen One or not.”

* * * *

Flying just meters over the ocean was thrilling as much thrilling as it was awe striking. Titinya Solo found it comforting, almost as much as the Garden of Utopia on Coruscant. However, she and her husband now lived on her home world of Bastion. This was the next best thing next to the garden.

She piloted her one-man shuttle as close to the water’s surface as she dared. The stress in her life seemed to be fade away, granted she was taking the long way home to experience this feeling. It was not like she was avoiding returning back to the academy. It also was not like she was overly stressed, because she wasn’t. She just had a passionate love for nature.

“Echo Base to Pond Skipper, do you read me?”

Ti shook her head in disbelief. Her husband had obviously told the cadet contacting her to call her that. Was it because he was being playful with her or pulling of a gentle prank on the new cadet? She sensed it was probably a double whammy.

“I read you, Echo Base.” If that’s you checking up on me…

“We have you on our scanners as over the ocean. Can you confirm your location.”

“Location confirmed,” Ti replied. “You can tell Master Solo, that he’s sleeping on the couch tonight if he keeps this up!”

The response was more immediate than she had anticipated, telling her that this was more serious than she had originally thought. “Negative Pond Skipper, Master Solo has still not arrived back to Bastion. We’re detecting an unidentified ship closing in on your location.”

Whatever else he was warning her about was falling on deaf ears. She quickly flipped a switch and activated shuttles radar to locate the intruder and then concentrated in the Force. She needed to know what the intruder’s intentions were. There was no point instigating a fight if she did not have to.

The intruder’s intentions were made clear without the Force when a couple blaster bolts splashed into the water centimeters to her right. “Okay pal, you just declared war on not just on a Jedi, but a Solo. That’s going to be the last mistake you ever make.”

A sudden jerk on the control stick and her shuttle started making a sharp left turn, with the tip the left wing skimming the edge of the water. She was glad that this shuttle was shaped and flew very much like an X-wing except with a longer, stretched out neck, and one pair of wings instead of two.

Water splashes were becoming more frequent all around her as the intruder was now clearly going full force to eliminate her. The constant fire, from the fighter pursuing her, was too consistent for the pilot to be firing at her manually. That fighter was clearly using am automatic firing mechanism. Either this guy was an armature, or he was taking no chances of missing her. However, whoever this guy was, he failed to realize who she was: A Jedi Knight.

In her mind, she counted the time between shots taken. If the move she was going to make worked, she would never careful timing. For anyone else, doing what she was about to do was suicidal, but she was not just anyone else. Stretching out in the Force, she waited for the next shot to fly past her viewport and splash into the water beside her. The millisecond she saw the splash, she tugged on her control stick as hard as she could to her right.

Her shuttle twisted itself, now flying in the opposite direction, just barely missed being hit by the next shot. The maneuver stunned the intruder long enough for her to pull the control stick towards her; pulling her shuttle straight up towards the atmosphere. The intruder quickly caught on and followed in pursuit.

The shuttle Ti was piloting did have weapons, but it was not equipped for space flight. She had to assume that the intruder did have that capability if for no other reason than it was unwise to underestimate your enemy. “Okay, pal, let’s see how you like this little trick.”

Force it! I’m starting to sound like my hubby’s father more and more.

Ti reached forward and with the flip of several switches, her engines shut down. Her shuttle ceased its ascension and immediately began free falling backwards. Using the Force to locate the intruder, she could see in her mind’s eye the shuttle quickly peeled to the right, barely able to avoid colliding into the rear of her shuttle.

When she felt the intruder had avoided the collision, she quickly activated the engines and piloted her shuttle in a giant loop until the belly of her shuttle was once more centimeters from the surface of the water.

From a distance, she got her first look at the fighter. The design was completely unfamiliar to her. It was not from Bastion, or Imperial in origins for that matter. Wherever this intruder was from, he was coming straight at her on a head on collision course. “Okay, let’s see which one of us will flinch first.”

Her thumb rested calmly on the red button on her control stick. With the help of the Force, she was able to calm her nerves which allowed her to think sharply and immediately. Timing it perfectly, she pressed on the fire button. At the same time, the intruder fired is as the two of them rapidly approached an inevitable collision. Closing her eyes, and allowing the will of the Force to be done, she braced herself for whatever its will was. A giant explosion produced a wall of fire which soon was engulfed in water.

I read the first chapter. Very impressive so far. The characters and story are very intriguing. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

Chapter 3: Backlash

The Jedi Hunters forced Jacen to sit on the ground as they prepped their ship for takeoff. This was the first that Jacen had experienced the neck collar device which the Jedi Hunters called their Force Inhibitor. It was a very awkward looking and feeling device around his neck. He was curious to know how these Jedi Hunter’s were able to create such a device.

The female Jedi Hunter, whom he had nearly killed in battle, kept her helmet in her hands. If Jacen had to guess, she hated wearing the helmet unlike her comrades. Interesting! Another thing he was curious about was why they were using Mandalorian armor like Boba Fett. As far as anyone knew, the Jedi Hunters were not Mandalorian by any nature.

Overhearing a conversation the female Hunter was having with someone on the other end of her hand held holoprojector, Jacen knew her name to be Lanora. Of course, that name could be just an alias. He carefully listened to her conversation while trying not to look like he was eavesdropping.

“We’ve caught the Jedi. You failed to mention that the Jedi you wanted us to capture is the cousin of the Chosen One. Do you realize what kind of jeopardy you have put my crew in by risking the wrath of the Chosen One?”

“We know full well of his relations to the Chosen One,” the image of the cloaked figure responded. “The mission remains the same.”

“But our bounty has not,” Lanora snapped. “For putting me and my crew in this position; if you want this Jedi alive, we expect to be paid triple the original bounty.”

“Let’s be reasonable, shall we? No target is worth three million credits, not by a long shot.”

“Take it or leave it. If you say leave it, I’ll kill this Jedi right here and right now and the Jedi will have no idea who was behind his death.”

“It appears you have us with our arm behind our back,” the cloaked figure’s voice was cold, but emotionless. Without his Jedi ability, Jacen could not tell if he was about to be loaded up onto the ship like cargo or face a gruesome death. “Three million credits then. Bring Solo back to us immediately and you will get your bounty.”

“It’s a pleasure doing business with you,” Lanora seemed relieved by the acceptance to her terms as she turned off her portable holoprojector.

“Is he going to pay us?” A member of her group asked through his helmet approaching her from behind.

“Yes, but I only trust them as far as I can spit. Prepare the ship for takeoff, but keep a look out. I smell a trap.”

“I agree,” he replied as he walked towards a small pile of boxes of ammunition and picked one up. Those boxes had to be heavy, and with the added weight of the armor on their shoulders, it was abundantly clear that these people were rather strong physically.

Lanora turned to face Jacen with a sneer on her face. “It appears I won’t have to kill you myself, Jedi; though it would have been better for you if I had.”

“I do not need the Force to sense that you expect trouble from your employer. Why do business with them if you can’t trust their motives?”

“Can it, Jedi. I know what you are trying to do. You think you can soften me up into not handing you over to your ultimate demise,” Lanora growled towards him. “The only thing that moves me is credits in my credit account and knowing that my actions are responsible for ridding the galaxy of another Jedi scum like you!”

“How colorful.” Jacen frowned.

Lorna looked back to find that all the cargo was now on board and the last of her crew were inside checking all systems. Grabbing him by his cloak, she pulled him to his feet. It was only at that moment, Jacen noticed the lack of circulation in his wrists that were tied behind him. He tried to wiggle his pinkies to try to slow the numbness that was starting to engulf them.

“Move it!” Lanora pulled on his rob, throwing Jacen in front of her. It was the smart thing for her to do. She was not going to take her eyes off of him. She had three million credits riding on him, and like any good bounty hunter, she was going to take no chance in losing her bounty.

Jacen had no more than taken two steps towards the ramp when a stream a powerful invisible force sent him and Lanora falling onto their backs. The force was quickly replaced with flames. His ears were still ringing when he sat up and saw the remains of the shuttle still burning.

“Spawn of a Sith!” Lanora cursed.

Jacen could not tell if the fire he saw in her eyes were from the flames or the anger that was awakened in her. “I suppose your three million credits are now up in smoke along with your ship.”

The look on Lanora’s face as she looked in his direction was murderous. Perhaps it had not been a smart move to agitate her further. Without using the Force, it was difficult for him to judge when and how hard to push his enemy. Remaining calm, and showing no sign of concern; Jacen quickly ran through his possible options in his mind.

The situation became more complicated when a red laser beam grazed past his ear and hit the ground missing his leg by centimeters. Fighting against his restraints, he looked around to see a light skinned humanoid pointing a blaster rifle at their direction. The lower part of his face was covered by a mask of some sort.

Using his leg strength, he pushed himself up, keeping his eyes intently on the attacker. In the corner of his right eye, he could see Lanora with her back towards the danger. How could someone as good as she was not know where the attack was coming from?

Another red bolt nearly hit him in the heel, causing him to stumble forward. This time, the shot had come from somewhere behind him: Lanora was not so off after all. If there were at least two attackers, then Jacen didn’t need the Force to know that there were probably more. With no way to defend himself, he ran to take cover behind another ship.

Lanora, on the other hand, refused to back down from the fight and took her blaster and started firing at everyone that fired at her. The armor had one protected her from a few direct hits, but the hanger began to fill up with more masked attackers. It did not take her long to realize that it was only a matter of time that they would find a way to kill her. She leapt behind the same shuttle Jacen was hiding behind, leaning back on the side of the ship’s hull beside Jacen.

“Well, this is fun,” Jacen grinned. “It appears your client wants you dead as much as they want me dead. Keep up the good work.”

“Shut up!” Lanora growled. “I’m trying to think here!”

“I have a plan to get us both out of here alive, if you care to hear it, but it’s going to mean that you trust me and turn off the Force Inhibitor around my neck.”

Lorna almost sounded sincere when she laughed as if he had just told her the galaxy’s funniest joke. “Trust you? That’s funny. I never knew you Jedi had any sense of humor.”

“Well then, I suppose we’re going to die here, and I’m perfectly fine with that. As a Jedi, I always live ready to die on any mission I go out on.”

“Sith’s spit!” Jacen wondered how many more curses was she able to come up with. It’s been a long time since he had been around someone whose language was so colorful that even his father would have blushed. The illuminating blue lights on the device around his neck faded out, leaving only a small red blinking light. “Don’t try to take the device off; I have the inhibitor set to detonate if any attempt to dismantle it is made. It will blow your head right off your shoulders if you even try to use the Force to dismantle it.”

She was good. For her to have change the settings on the device around his neck, she must have some kind of remote. She was wise not to give him any view of that remote because he could always use the Force to draw the remote to him.

“Very well,” Jacen nodded, relieved to feel the flow of the Force engulf him once again. He reached into that invisible stream, and used it to untie his wrists.

“What’s your plan, Jedi?”

“How are you at hotwiring a hover bike?” Jacen asked, rubbing his wrists, and waiting for the numbness in his hands to subside.

“You insult me even now?” Lanora barked, looking as if she was ready to leap on top of him and rip his head of his shoulders with her bare hands.

“There is a hover bike in the next space over from this shuttle. I’ll cover you and you hotwire the hover bike and we use that to get out of town.”

“Your plan is adequate,” she replied calmly but coldly.

“One last thing. I will need my weapon back,” Jacen put out his right palm.

Her upper lip curled with distrust and disgust as she grabbed his lightsaber from her belt. “I have my eye on you, Jedi!” She slapped the weapon into his hand. “Now do your thing.”

With a nod, he did just that. He rolled out back into the line of fire and he was instantly greeted with blaster shots from all directions. There had to be at least ten attackers trying to do what the bomb had failed to do. He could see a good number of them, and all of them had a mask covering everything below their nose. The one thing he did notice was that all of them had the same short, black hairstyle. Was this some kind of fanatical occult?

There was no time to worry about who they were. What was important was surviving long enough to be able to worry about that later. With a snap-hiss, he brought his lightsaber to life. With swift moving twirls and swings, he drew all the blaster fire towards him and deflected them.

Lanora took advantage of the distraction and ran around the shuttle she had been hiding behind to reach the hover bike. It would not provide enough cover for her from any shots made at her, so Jacen had to prove himself to be the greater threat.

Instead of just deflecting the blast shots away, he angled his blade with each maneuver more precisely; sending the shots back to the original senders. He was able to take out a few of the attackers, but more just took their place instead.

He was getting ready to tell Lanora to hurry up when the hover bike roared to life. He maneuvered his way towards the vehicle. “You drive and I’ll cover our escape.”

“Bantha’s foot!” Lanora snapped. “You’re the one driving. I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

Now it was Jacen’s turn to want to swear. This woman was the most infuriating person in the galaxy. He would have loved to see if Uncle Luke would have been able to keep his composure with someone like this woman. Still with his ability to use the Force, he sensed in would be futile and perhaps lethal to pursue the matter further. He deactivated his weapon and put in on his belt.

Lanora was firing her blaster back at the attackers as Jacen lept on. “Get on!”

Lanora hopped on, but did not fully sit down. She used his shoulder to keep her steady as she continued to fire at the attackers. Flipping a few switches, and grabbing the handlebars, he backed out of the landing space into plain site. Lanora was shooting as fast as her weapon would allow her to provide as much protection as she could for themselves. With a few more switch flipping, Jacen drove the hover bike forward towards the entranceway to the main roadways.

The group of attackers came out of their hiding places after them, trying in a last ditch effort to get their targets. Jacen unintentionally cut off another hover vehicle pulling out onto the roadway. When they were clear from the hanger, Lanora sat down and put her weapon away.

“See, no problem!” Jacen said with a grin on his face.

“Yea, no problem!” Lorna quickly grabbed the lightsaber from Jacen’s belt.

Before he could protest, the Force Inhibitor around his neck reactivated. “Hey!”

“You’re still my prisoner, Jedi, and don’t you forget it. Now get us out of this city. I’ll have to recollect myself and figure out our next move.”
