Major Invincible Spoilers Inside!

You have been warned! devil

Legacy of the Force: Invincible, Epilogue posted:
[…] Leia said, “Well, we do have some good news.”

“Jag is coming to see me?”

“As soon as he can,” her father promised.

This thread will be a series of missing scenes from Legacy of the Force: Invincible, leading up to the Jaina/Jag reunion promised in the Epilogue. love

The Good News builds on my previous LOTF missing scenes:

* Nearly Zero – Jag and Zekk missing scenes from Inferno and Fury cool

* Should Be Going – Jaina and Jag’s farewell at the start of Revelation rose

For context, Part One of this story is Jaina and Jag’s first reunion since “Should Be Going”… love

As always, thanks to TKL for the awesome betas. hugs

The Good News

between Chapters One and Two of Legacy of the Force: Invincible

Part One

After the fourth hyperspace jump in a randomly selected direction, Jaina decided she was probably good and clear of anyone who might have tried to track her departure from Nickel One. With no idea where the Jedi might have relocated their secret base, she didn’t even know which direction to point her starfighter. Not that it would really matter for the comm signal. Still, she felt a little strange to be heading back, without knowing where back was.

She entered the comm codes, and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

“What? Are you asleep or something?” she finally muttered.

On cue the comm beeped, then emitted a sharp burst of static. “Jaina?”

“It’s me, Jag.” She took a breath, and that finally made it seem real. “And I need the coordinates. I’m… done. I’m coming home.”

His sigh of relief was audible. “Just give me a second. I’ve already plotted a –”

“About that…”

“– very efficient route for you to –”

“Uh, Jag?”

He stopped, and paused for a split-second. “Yes?”

“I’m not at Mandalore.”

“You’re… But… Where are you coming from, then?”

“Actually, I don’t really know.”

If eye-rolling made noise, Jaina was pretty sure she’d just heard it. “Okay… Where are you close to?”

“I’m a couple of random hyperspace jumps away from Roche. Give or take.”

“Fett put you in the middle of an Imperial invasion? Nice guy.”

“Yeah, he’s got a big heart. Look, are you going to –”

“– send the coordinates? One second.” Jag knew better than to say his location aloud. They couldn’t be certain the transmission wasn’t being intercepted – but they could be sure no one else knew the encryption sequence Jaina had memorized before she left. “Transmitting.”

The indicator light flashed. “Receiving.”

“It won’t take you long. I’ll alert the scouts to be expecting your X-wing.”

“About that. There’s been a little –”

Jag laughed. “Naturally. What are you flying, Jaina?”

“A Bes’uliik.”

Immediately his voice was intensely serious. “You’re certain Fett isn’t tracking you?”

“Long story. Short version, he’d have had no way of knowing which one I’d take.”

“You didn’t steal it, did you?”

Now it was her turn to laugh. “Jag!”

“This is you we’re talking about, Jaina. Admit it – it was a fair question.”

“Maybe.” The console beeped again. “Coordinates received.”

“Of course you’ve already run the diagnostics to make sure you’re not sending any signals.”

“Of course.”

“Should be fine, then.” He paused. “So… what’s it like?”

She knew exactly where he was headed. “Yes, Jag. When I get there, I’ll let you fly it.”

“Excellent.”

“See you soon?”

“Can’t wait.”

“Me too.”

“I meant the Bes’uliik.”

“Shut up, Jag.”

“Copy that. Clear skies.” Another burst of static, and the feed went quiet.

***

When she’d finally made her way along the convoluted passages through the Transitory Mists, when she’d finally brought the Bes’uliik to a smooth landing in a hangar bay on Shedu Maad, they were waiting for her. Her family. No matter what was going to happen next, they made all this worth it. They were the reason she came back – and clearly they wanted her back just as much as she wanted to be here.

She wasn’t even sure her boots hit the hangar floor before her father crushed her in a firm, heartfelt embrace. She hugged him back.

“Hi, Dad.”

Han squeezed her one more time, then put his hands on her shoulders and held her out at arm’s length to appraise her. “Are you okay? Nothing’s wrong, right? Because if Fett –”

“I’m fine, Dad. Promise.”

Skeptical, he peered at her. “You sure?”

At his side Leia laughed, and gently reached up a hand to lower his arm. “Somehow I doubt Fett turned her into a pathological liar, dear.”

“Thanks, Mom,” Jaina said, and scooted out from under her father’s other hand to embrace her mother. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you, too, sweetheart.” Leia kissed her on the cheek. “And it’s good to have you back.”

“It’s good to be back. Especially back in civilization. Because I really need a sanisteam.” Reflexively she ran a hand through her hair, and shuddered. She felt disgusting. She probably smelled, too. Should have thought of that before she started hugging people. “Please tell me there are sanisteams here.”

“You got it, kiddo,” her father said. “Running water in the ’freshers, too.”

“Hot meals, even,” her mother added.

“All right, all right, you made your point.” She leaned around her father and waved. “Hey, Ben.”

“Hi, Jaina.” He waved back, but didn’t try to get past Han.

Leia tugged at Han’s elbow, but he stayed rooted in place. “Let the others say hello. You’ll have plenty of time to debrief her later.”

Han scowled at his wife, then turned to Jaina. “You’re sure you’re okay?”

She understood. She really did. Jaina took his hand in both of hers and squeezed it. Hard. “Yes, Dad.”

Still glowering, Han muttered, “All right, I guess,” before letting Leia lead him away across the hangar bay. Ben gave Jaina a quick hug, then moved past her toward the Bes’uliik. Glancing over her shoulder, she watched him join Jag and Zekk, who were already diligently running scanners along the starfighter’s exterior. Inside, she laughed. No doubt that was Jag’s idea. Why bother wasting time waiting for the others to finish greeting her when they could do some work in the meantime?

She turned back to Luke, who also gave her a brief embrace. Then he stood before her, calm and inscrutable. For a long moment they said nothing. Finally he said, “How are you feeling?”

She held his gaze, and took a long, slow breath. “Ready.”

Luke smiled, warm yet determined. “Good.”

“Did I miss anything important?”

Luke gave her another one of those bemused, unreadable Jedi Master looks. She half expected him to answer her with a riddle. Instead he said, “Nothing the Council can’t update you on once you’ve had a chance to clean up and relax for a while.”

“What, I smell that bad?” Jaina raised a brow. “Or were you reading my mind?”

“Neither,” her uncle said, chuckling. “I remember how it feels to fight a ground battle for hours, then hop in a starfighter for a few more hours.”

“Oh.” Jaina chuckled too. “Right.”

Luke reached out and gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze, then turned and paced away. Jaina spun to face the Bes’uliik just as the three boys finished up. Zekk handed his scanner to Ben and strode over to her. For a moment, hesitant, he stood in front of her. Then, simultaneously, they reached out and embraced.

“Welcome back,” he said quietly.

“Thanks.”

They separated. He smiled. “Fett teach you anything good?”

She smiled back. “A few things.”

Zekk shook his head in mock consternation. “Figures. But I guess I’m overdue for a beatdown.”

“You certainly are,” said Jag’s voice. They looked over as he joined them. “All clear on the scans.” He tipped his head to Jaina. “You were right. Nothing to worry about.”

“You should know by now, Jag.” Zekk grinned down at them. “The lady is always –”

From behind them came a loud crash. In unison they turned to see Ben holding two scanners in his hands with the third clattering around at his feet. He gave them a chagrined look and mouthed the word, Oops.

“– right.” Chuckling, Zekk started to walk away. “Suppose I’d better help him before he breaks one of those.”

And just like that Jaina and Jag were alone, standing next to the Bes’uliik. She grinned. “Nice ship, huh?”

“Seems like it.” He held her gaze. “I’ll need to make a thorough, detailed inspection to know for sure, though.”

A tingle ran down her spine. She remembered his attention to detail all too clearly. “I bet.”

Without another word he reached out and pulled her to him. His arms closed around her back, and she wrapped hers around his waist. Not thinking, she pressed herself against him and rested her face on his chest. She felt him sigh, but from relief or contentment she couldn’t tell.

Then, abruptly, she tried to pull back. “Sorry,” she said hurriedly. “I must stink.”

But he wouldn’t let her go, so the furthest she got was a futile half-lean away from him. His mischievous eyes stared down at her. “Not too bad.”

“Gee, thanks.” She leaned in and hugged him one more time. She wanted to ask him if he’d missed her. If he’d thought about her as much as she’d thought about him while she was on Mandalore. If he’d kept thinking back to that night on Endor as much as she had. If he was feeling all those old emotions roaring back, too. If it was okay to let herself feel them again.

She wanted to ask him, so badly, but she couldn’t. Not now. Not yet.

They ended their embrace but still stood close. Close enough to…

“Jaina,” he said softly. “I…”

She waited, but he didn’t continue. In the Force, he was a roiling ball of conflicted emotion, certainty and hesitation at the same time. “What is it, Jag?”

He leaned down and rested his forehead against hers. “I’ll tell you later.”

She didn’t need him to say when. She knew. When this is over. “Promise?”

“I promise.”

She nodded her forehead against his. “Okay.”

Jag straightened, and motioned his hand toward the far wall of the hangar bay. “Want me to show you the way to your quarters, so you can get that sanisteam?”

“Sure,” she said as they started walking. “But I thought you said I didn’t stink?”

He quickened his stride to get ahead of her. “I lied.”

Oh!” Jaina growled, and took off after him.

This was the exact scene I was expecting to read in Invincible since the teaser at the end of Revelation. You know that Jag and Luke would have been going nuts when they heard she was coming back in a Bes’uliik! I was a little bummed that we did not get Jag giving it a joy ride through the mists. wink

You do such an amazing job writing Jag and Jaina. I cannot wait for more! applause

I really like how you brought whats left of that family together here Lex, because I think that is very important to what LotF was about, and the way the seven of them (plus Jag/Allana) will move forward. Even if it's somewhat serperately.

O yay! It was so great to finish Invincible and then find this. I was kind of going crazy, which is what I get for going into a fugue-like state and reading six legacy books in three days. This story is like...Methadone.

Love the flirting and the flying and the double entendres. The tension between friendship and desire and fear between Jag and Jaina is so true to who these characters are at this point. I love it!

Thank you! dancing There is so much missing from Invinsible I am glad to see someone adressing it.You know I love your J/J. Quick work of getting Zekk out of the way. laugh I was actually very disappointed in the final book. Not enough detail and I felt it lacked emotional punch. Especially for the showdown. Time for replies. grin

jadesabre75: Man...there was just so much good about this I can't list them all.
I really had a lot of fun writing this scene, start to finish. Glad it worked. happy

I’ll take that as a good sign. batting

Gotta give Allston the credit for that. He does J/J banter better than anyone. love

Trickster-Lead: It made me smile...much like the ending of Invincible.
Thanks! grin We’re building toward an extra J/J scene to go with that ending… whistling

princess_of_naboo: Finally, someone is fixing the lack of J/J in Invincible.
laugh laugh Yeah. Silly Denning. shame_on_you

I’ll do my best. love

Jag4Me: This was the exact scene I was expecting to read in Invincible since the teaser at the end of Revelation.
If Denning hadn’t gone for quite as sharply focused of a plot, this kind of scene definitely would have been a good one to include for some character development. I can understand the storytelling choice Denning made, though. And it’s fine with me, because that just means there’s more room for fanfic! dancing

You know that Jag and Luke would have been going nuts when they heard she was coming back in a Bes’uliik!
Funny how Luke ends up flying it in the final battle, huh? He may be the Jedi Grand Master but at heart he’s still that kid from ANH who’s bored with the T-16 and wants the fancy ships. laugh

Piper: QFT!
Remember that title. There’s more to it than might seem… whistling

I'm remembering Han's reaction to her game plan in the battle room.
Yep. She’s her father’s daughter. mischief

I really like how you brought whats left of that family together here Lex, because I think that is very important to what LotF was about
Thanks for noticing this. happy I can see why Denning didn’t include a scene like this in the tight plot of Invincible, but it’s also not a coincidence that when Jaina returns from Mandalore, the whole family is gathered in one place. The whole gang’s there and ready to take down Caedus together. cool So I just wanted to make that a bit more overt than the subtle way Denning uses it in the book.

Then you can ask her permission to get back up.
Poor Zekk, he gets no love on the J/J threads. doh! silly

She might slip after all.
Yep, it’s all about safety. angel

Solo_and_Fel: Thanks! grin

Sticks: I've been reading back through your various missing scenes, and WOW. These are amazing. So amazing I almost want to pick up the books so I can see where they fit in
Glad you enjoyed catching up. happy I think this story will work even without reading my other missing scenes, but there will definitely be a few little connections along the way, too. wink And I do try to match the scenes to the tone of the books they go with, so hopefully they would fit in like missing chapters.

but I honestly doubt anything in profic can compare. Your characterization is impeccable. I tip my hat to you and humbly beg for more.
Wow, thank you. blush It means a lot. And don’t worry, the next post should be up today or tomorrow. dancing

Aleria: This is just what we needed, and were left yearning for, in Invincible.
I know! not_talking But that’s what fanfic’s for…

I love the way you write Jaina and Jag. With their bantering and the thoughts they just won't utter aloud yet. Simply marvelous!
Thanks! happy Writing J/J at this point in LOTF is actually a bit tricky for me. If it had been my storytelling call, I’d have let J/J get together in Fury so that all of her emotions were resolved before she faced Caedus in Invincible. But given that the profic took the other angle, not resolving it until after the final duel, I have to stick to that for the missing scenes. Which is fun, though, because it means I get to play off their unspoken feelings, and maybe even a little bit of denial (what they’re afraid to admit to themselves). love

lurker: This story is like...Methadone.
In a good way, right? worried laugh

The tension between friendship and desire and fear between Jag and Jaina is so true to who these characters are at this point. I love it!
Thanks! grin That is definitely the dynamic I was going for in this scene.

aurra: A story like this is just what I need to make Invincible a little more bearable in the J/J department
I’m sensing a theme for Denning in this thread… talk_hand

I'll just pretend Troy accidentally left this out and we're good to go
Accidentally! laugh

jade: From the Banter, to Ben dropping the scanners it felt like it fit in...
Yeah, the Ben dropping the scanners thing was one of those moments where I was trying to capture Troy’s tone in Invincible. Much of the book is serious and somber thematically, but there’s lots of great SW humor in there too – sarcastic lines, witty zingers, and even some goofball moments to take away from the dark mood. And really, what’s better than a 14 yo kid having a klutz moment for that? silly

Jaina_and_Jag: I wish it had been in the book.
Me too. Especially if it means I got a cut of the royalties! laugh

More soon! grin

obsessedwithSW: Quick work of getting Zekk out of the way.
Busted! Yeah, I figured the J/J fans would like that bit. angel

Just a suggestion but anyone going to tackle Jacen's final call to Tenel Ka and her escape? And what was your take on the whole Ben/Tahiri deal?
There’s definitely a lot of room for missing scenes for Invincible. This story will just be the J/J ones, but those are interesting possibilities, too… thinking

Thanks again for reading, everyone! grin

The next post is drafted, but I’m still tinkering with some things – not to mention making the fixes required by my incisive beta. hugs

So hopefully the next post will be up by tomorrow! dancing
