Bastion
1700
Office of High Moff Jagged Fel

Jag starred at the men sitting around his desk.

Five of the Moff’s on his Council were here, plus a few of the Imperial military, as well as his father, Soontir Fel. Each had their own agenda. Moff Ortigan had been making a concerted effort to discredit Jag’s every unilateral decision. Moffs Bardos and Fiars were intermittently agreeing to everything Jag said. And Soontir watched it all with a hawkish expression, feeding on the animosity in the room.

The latest topic of discussion was a possible alliance with the Chiss Empire. Showing a rare skill in micromanaging and interfering where she didn’t belong, Daala had set a team produce several proposals, most being highly regarded by even Jag’s staunchest supporters. In the minds of the Moffs, Daala was still Imperial at heart, and represented not the twisted existence of Palpatine but the strategy and leadership of Tarkin.

Yes, Bastion spent a good amount of its time, trying to distance itself from Palpatine, ranging from school texts, to war recounts. Sith Lords had become a taboo that only the Jedi broke.

Regardless, it all added up that Chief Daala had more pull in his Council than Jag did in this instance. He had already rejected most of Daala’s proposals on sight and had admitted the others to Council on the hopes of staving off political suicide. Still coups abounded in numbers that would rival the Hapan court and Jag’s Chiss instilled unfailing discipline and tenacity were beginning to crumble.

Moff Ortigan, a man of considerable years that were only outweighed by his girth, had been trying to convince Jag and the Council for the last hour the finer points their High Moff had inadvertently missed during his own meager observation.

“You were one of them,” Ortigan concluded. “Surely you must see the merits in such an alliance.”

“‘Were’, being the operative word,” Jag reminded. “My honor amongst the Chiss is tenuous at best. And while, I more than any can see the benefit of such an alliance, I do believe that the Chiss would not.”

Ortigan opened his mouth to continue his recitation.

Jag held up a hand, staving off the impending drone. “And I suspect these proposals from Chief Daala are no more than a means to use me and this Empire to cultivate the Chiss. I will not be used. And as of right now, this meeting is over. I have an ambassador to meet.”

“Your Rebel pet,” Ortigan said condescendingly.

“Watch yourself, Moff Ortigan,” Jag sneered. “She’s has vicious teeth when she’s angry. And frankly, I would enjoy seeing them snap at someone other than myself.” He gestured towards the door with his eyes, keeping his face place, unmoved. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

Most of the occupants filed out, all save one.

“I’m not in the mood, Father,” Jag said, closing down the terminals on his desk. He’d cleared his calendar for tonight and hadn’t been anticipating an unsolicited conference from Soontir.

“Jagged,” Soontir cautioned.

“Father, I asked you here as my advisor.”

“Which, I was happy to do.”

Jag smirked. “Maybe too happy.”

“We brought the whole family so that we could be together and help you through this transition phase. But you have not heard a world I said. Instead, you bend your ear to their bickering or ask that Solo girl her opinion.” His gaze flickered to the doorway. “You are losing them.”

Jag sighed. He had never asked for this position. Luke Skywalker had made a political maneuver that rivaled his sister’s skill, when fixed with Daala’s election, and had pressed Jag into the mold of Imperial Moff.

A strange subversion of the ‘devil you know’ principle and a small victory.

“I never had them. I’m willing to admit that. I’m doing my best to earn their respect, but I have my hands tied with Daala’s interference.”

Soontir clapped his hands on the desk, victory gleaming in his dark eyes. “And there is your problem. You can’t wait for them to respect you. This isn’t the Chiss or your tenuous alliance with the Jedi. This is your Empire. You don’t wait for respect, you take it. Ortigan will continue to be a vibroshiv in your side, waiting to plant it in your back, until you do.”

“And how do you suggest I do that.”

Soontir straightened, became hard, unyielding. “Declare yourself Emperor.”

He laughed, rich, and disbelieving. “Emperor? You can’t be serious.”

Unmoving as a mountain, Soontir’s sincerity did not waiver.

“You are serious.”

It wasn’t a question, but his father answered, “Yes, I am.”

“Dad,” Jag said, arguments poised on the tip of his tongue.

They were forestalled by a raise of Soontir’s hand. “I know this isn’t what you want, that you will never be comfortable with the idea of being Emperor, but you must think about it. The Old Republic and New Republic and to an extent the Galactic Alliance is run by ideals. But the Empire must be commanded by a man. We suffered under a man with his own agendas. Palpatine was greedy with his power and aloof with its use.”

“All power corrupts, Father. I’ve seen that more times than I’d care to count.”

“Yes, especially when it is attained for desire. But an Emperor must use it in service,” Soontir said sharply. “You must.”

“What you’re talking about...it seems impossible,” Jag said with a shake of his head. “Jacen Solo wanted to father the galaxy, to force it to an ultimate peace. But he caused a number of events that lead to another civil war.”

“He tried to force all beings to his vision, that will always lead to strife. The difference here, Jagged, is that these people, your people, are looking to you to be that father, to watch after them.”

Jag slumped into his conforming chair, avoiding his father’s piercing gaze. On the surface, what his father had said carried a weight of truth to it. The Empire was based upon direct authority, one man making the decisions for all.

In the heat of battle, split decisions had always needed to be made and he’d never failed to give them. He’d accepted that responsibility as part of his captaincy, had proven through his actions that he could make life and death situations in a heartbeat. But this wasn’t life and death, this was politics, and every decision made was suicide.

Jag cringed.

“Until you take your command, Jagged,” Soontir broke into his reverie. “Some one more willing, with less scruples and morales, will try to attain it for themselves. Ortigan will be the first.”

“There’re other ways of dealing with him.”

“He won’t be the last.”

Jagged rubbed his chin, felt the grit of stubble over the skin, turned a gauging glance to his father. “Are you sure this isn’t a wish for bygone days?”

With an irritated frown, Soontir said, “I won’t deny that I would once again enjoy serving an Emperor, one I can trust completely.”

“Low blow,” Jag accused with a wry smile. Parents held an unfair advantage of having programmed all the right buttons to push. A sense of trust, pride, and accomplishment had been well wired into Jag’s makeup. “I’ll consider it.”

“After consulting with that Solo girl.”

The warm humor froze on Jag’s features. “I’d appreciate it if you’d change your tone, Father.”

Soontir held up his hands, patting the air in a placating fashion. “Of course.” He made a show of checking the chrono himself. “I have a meeting with the agricultural commission.”

“Your labor of love,” Jag jabbed.

“Yes,” Soontir sniffed. “Just don’t get too caught up in yours. And think about I’ve said.”

Reluctantly, Jag said, “I will.”

Bastion Atmosphere
2000

One lone x-wing leapt out of the dimensions of space and just outside of Bastion’s atmosphere. It was an XJ series, considered outdated by now, but had once been key in the battle against the Yuuzhan Vong. The hull was pocked and pitted, baring the symbol that marked it as belonging to the Jedi Order.

Inside the cockpit, Jaina Solo worked the instrumentation. The familiar warm flutter of her heart tripped faster at the sight of the planet. She’d been away close to a season and had missed the part of her heart that resided here at the capital of the Imperial Remnant.

She switched on the transponder and announced her presence. “Ambassador Jaina Solo to Bastion Control, clearance code alpha, alpha, delta.”

“We read you, Ambassador, entrance vector transmitting.”

Being an ambassador was a front to the reality of her situation here. On the surface, she was a liaison between the Jedi and the Imperial Remnant. After seven years, no one really bought the story any longer, but Jaina and Jag still maintained the facade.

The vector sent, she followed it down to the docking bay. As expected, Jag was there, dressed in Imperial grey with the shoulder bars designating him the High Moff of the Moffs’
council. Next to him, similarly clad, was the delegation was and Jag’s personal secretary Essana Gray.

“Ambassador Solo,” he greeted her, his face blank save for an amused twinkle in his green eyes. “It is always a pleasure to see you.”

She took his proffered hand, bent over it in a bow, careful not to drop a kiss on the back of it. Her every move on Bastion had to be deliberate, thought out. No doubt some speculated that she and Jag were lovers and even they only knew part of the story. They were lovers and they loved.

Jaina loved this part, seeing him again and knowing that goodbye was in the future and that for a space of time, she would only have to think of the now and them together. Eventually she would have to return to the Galactic Alliance, to Ossus or Coruscant, her place and duty in the Order.

“High Moff Fel, I hope you are well,” she said the ritual greeting.

“Quite well,” he returned. Only she could hear the silent ‘now’ behind this statement. He cleared his throat. “I’ve had your usual room prepared. You’ve had a long journey, I’m sure you would like to freshen up.”

“Yes, thank you.”

Jag turned his gaze to his companion. “Shall we see the Ambassador to her quarters?” he asked Essana

“Yes, sir,” the aide quipped with a slight smile. Out of the all the personnel on Bastion, Essana was the only one who knew the true nature of their relationship. Their greatest confidante, the custodian of all their secrets.

As Jag and Essana lead her to her faux sleeping quarters, Jaina reached out a hand and instantly Jag brought his to meet it. Their fingers entwined and Jaina ran her thumb over the ridges of his skin. He slowed down, matching her pace, letting Essana take the lead.

Essana left them outside of the entrance to Jaina’s quarters. “I’ll return with those items the Ambassador wanted to look over.”

“Thank you, Essana,” Jaina said, tossing her helmet to the sofa in the common room.

It wasn’t overly large, austerely furnished. Two modest windows that let in the moonlight. Severe and efficient, Imperial to the core. Jaina didn’t mind. Separate quarters was just another part of the show.

As soon as the door closed behind Jag’s secretary, Jaina found herself in an intense hug. She returned it, feeling the muscles of his back play under her hands. “Force, I don’t know why we have to keep up the game-playing. All of them have to know what is going on.”

He kissed her ear, buried his nose into her hair. “Hardly, darling. They still wonder why I keep company with such rebel scum.”

“I’ve missed you,” she said, after laughing.

“Really, Jay, this arrangement is ridiculous,” he admonished her. Bringing her out to arms length, he eyed her. “You flitting across the galaxy, me stationed here on Bastion, seeing each other for a few short weeks before you’re gone again.”

She took his hands in her own, holding them between them. “You know the reason. We have to be careful.”

“You were just questioning our subterfuge,” he reminded her, his tone suddenly formal masking his frustration.

“That was a joke and I really don’t see...,” she drew off, let out a sight. Bracketing his face with her hands, she gave him a gentle kiss. “I just got here, can we reschedule this argument?”

Jag nodded, the stillness of his expression melting. “Yes. But we will discuss this, Jaina.”

Jaina was saved a reply, when the door spurted open again and in came the two pressing issues the Jedi Ambassador had come to Bastion for, rushing forward ahead of Essana. Davin, the oldest, had his father’s raven hair and his mother’s liquid brown eyes. He held tightly onto his two-year-old sister’s hand. Anika shared the same coloring of the man she’d been named for, dark brown ringlets framed her child chubby face, ice-chip colored eyes looking out beneath the warm fringe.

As they rushed her, Jaina bent down with arms opened wide. She caught them in a fit of giggles and held onto them like an anchor.

Her children. Son and daughter. An unwanted miracle that still baffled her to this day. When she’d found out she was pregnant, life in general had been in an uproar. She and Jag had been deciding their relationship and she’d still been mentally coming to terms with destroying Darth Caedus.

She hadn’t wanted a child, never thought she would, and it had put her at odds with Jag more than a few times. But once Davin had been born, everything solidified.

Two children named after two brothers deeply loved. Anika was supposed to be Cherith, named after Jag’s older sister who had passed on, but the first time Jaina had seen her, she knew that she was a little piece of Anakin.

Jag hadn’t minded.

She placed a kiss on each of their brows, ruffled Davin’s hair and lifted Anika into her arms. “Okay, who gave Daddy the hardest time?”

Jag snorted. “As if you have to ask. Your daughter has inherited your knack for blazing through everything in her path. She doesn’t quite get the idea that she’s supposed to be in hiding.”

Fear the shade of grey sky and silver ice seized her. “What happened?”

“Public appearance in one of the academies,” Jag informed her. “Essana came to pick up Davin and Anika spotted me. She started calling for me and managed to break Essana’s grip. She was caught by Davin before anyone noticed.”

Jaina cupped the soft curve of Davin’s cheek, pulled his head to her side. She closed her eyes, letting herself absorb the fact that both her children were safe and in her arms. When she opened them, she saw Jag watching her, concern written on his face. The corner of her lip twitched

“And it would seem your son is very much like his father. Pulling us recalcitrant Solo girls away from the cusp of danger.”

Briefly, a shadow passed over Jag’s features. There and gone again.

“What is it?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Ask me later.” He clapped his hands and rubbed them together. “Bed time. Who wants to be tucked in by Mommy? ”

“Are you all right?”

Jaina didn’t turn her gaze from the quite of the Bastion streets, but held out her hand for Jag and drew him near. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing her back to his chest.

“Couldn’t sleep,” she answered.

“Nightmare?”

“No. Nothing like that. Just thinking.” She turned her face to look up at him. “You?”

“I missed you,” he said succinctly, squeezing her firmly.

Hyper-aware of him, she nestled deeper into his hold, the Force swirling warmly around her reflecting their happiness. Precious were these moments, distant from each other and nothing more than a heartbeat. She wanted to remain here forever, in this escape.

She didn’t know how long she’d been there, luxuriating in the quiet, when she felt Jag tense behind her, sensed the change in his thoughts. A thought, hailing back to his short discomfort with the children.

“You can tell me,” she prompted him.

“Too many thoughts creeping up on me.”

She chuckled. “That can be dangerous.”

“Only to those who depend on Solo luck.” The silence stretched for several minutes before he continued. “My father wants me to be Emperor.”

Jaina sucked in a breath, let it out in a long drag. “That is dangerous. Does he suddenly have a death wish for you?”

“He believes it will ease my problems with the other Moffs,” he explained, a hint of unhappy humor in his tone.

“Oh.”

Uncle Luke had been working with whatever hand he’d been offered, but had invariable pressured Jag into a position he had not wanted. Too duty bound for his own good, he’d accepted it without complaint, but she knew the weight that bowed his shoulders.

“Maybe you should.”

She felt his surprise, not only as a sharp peak in the Force, but in the subtle movements of the flesh. She knew every inch of him now.

“What of Davin and Anika? There would be no way to assure their safety if I made that leap. Every Moff looking to rise to power would increase their investigation ten fold. Essana is already hard pressed.”

Basically, she was needed here.

“The Moffs would never accept a marriage between us. They already question my presence here as an ambassador. There is no other purpose here for me.”

He pressed his face into her hair, breathed her in. She wrapped her arms over his, tightening his grip. “I know,” he said. “I only wish.”

“Me too.”

As to who knows about Davin and Anika, that will be revealed in the story. I'm glad I surprised you with the children. Thanks for reading.

I think they deserved a little happiness. They're in a committed relationship, despite all the problems they have politically.
