Title: Confession
Author: Darth_Lex
Timeframe: LOTF
Characters: Zekk, Jaina Solo, Jagged Fel
Genre: Romance, Humor
Summary: What happened to Zekk in Legacy of the Force: Invincible?

Disclaimer: Lucasfilm owns all the rights to Star Wars. I don’t. No infringement is intended or profit to be made by me.

One of the great mysteries at the end of Invincible is what happened to Zekk. Is he dead? Injured? Captured? The book leaves us guessing…

A particular passage in Invincible caught TKL’s attention, though. Perhaps it was a subtle hint from the evil author, Denning? devil The idea led me to go back to some of the other LOTF books and compare several other scenes. The more I read, the more I liked TKL’s devious theory about what Denning was suggesting. mischief

Using that theory, this vignette is canon speculation about the nature of Zekk’s disappearance. (The relevant passages from the novels are excerpted below, prior to the vignette itself, so you can see how we’re connecting the dots.)

Although I hope it stands on its own, the characterization of the three principals in Confession builds on my previous LOTF missing scenes:

* Nearly Zero – Jag and Zekk missing scenes from Inferno and Fury cool

* Should Be Going – Jaina and Jag’s farewell at the start of Revelation rose

* The Good News – J/J missing scenes from Invincible love

As always, thanks to TKL for the awesome beta. hugs And on this one, for the inspiration, too. batting

Sacrifice, page 107

Then something vanished from the Force.

Ben

It was like a shape flashing past her peripheral vision, and a familiar background noise stopping abruptly, leaving a dead, soundless ringing in the ears.

Ben’s gone

Ben had disappeared from the Force.

Mara’s hand was on the controls to jump to hyperspace and head back to Coruscant at top speed when the sense of her son flooded back as if the sound had been turned on again.

Inferno, page 231-232

They caught Luke dead in the stern, chewing through the damaged armor in a flaming eyeblink. The Force boiled with anguish, and then Jaina was flying through a fireball that had once been a starfighter. …

Luke Skywalker was dead.

And Jaina had shot him down.

Inferno, page 235

Leia shook her head. “I felt this surprise, then … this anguish. And Luke was just gone.”

Invincible, page 209

Jaina made no attempt to hide her presence in the Force, since the whole idea was to let Caedus sense them returning to Uroro Station. And it would have been pointless anyway, since Zekk hadn’t been taught the technique yet.

Invincible, page 220

… and she found herself more or less in one piece.

Actually, it was less, because Zekk wasn’t there anymore. Jaina couldn’t feel him in the Force – couldn’t even find the combat-meld. She hadn’t felt him die, hadn’t experienced a sudden shock of fear and pain, could not even remember a wistful pang of regret or farewell. He was just… gone.

one week after the Epilogue of Legacy of the Force: Invincible

Confession

“I’m going, Mom, and you can’t stop me.”

“Be reasonable. You’re not even close to fully –”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Jaina shot back. “I have a lot of healing left to do. I know that. But it’s not like I’m running off to fight a Sith Lord again. I’m just going for a little ride in a starship.”

Leia scowled. “That’s not the point. You’re risking –”

“I’m not risking anything!” Jaina wagged a finger. “The war is over. All the hostile forces have withdrawn. The Hapans have complete control over the Mists, and Tenel Ka was more than happy to authorize clearances for us. There’s nobody out there to shoot at me.”

Leia was still scowling, but she said nothing.

“See?” Jaina looked to the two men standing near the door. “Tell her I’m right.”

Jag just held up his hands defensively. Her father said, “No way. I know better than to get in the middle of an argument between two Jedi Knights.”

At least he wasn’t siding with her mother. Jaina gave him credit for that. “Look, I’m sorry, Mom. I know you’re worried. But I have to do this.”

Leia started to speak, then simply sighed.

“I can’t give up, not yet.” Jaina reached for the folded flight suit resting on the end of her bed. “Not without looking for him myself. So if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to –”

“Get dressed,” said a new voice from the open doorway. “Yes, we know.”

Jaina spun to see her uncle standing astride the portal. She glowered. “Don’t tell me you’re here to try to talk me out of this, too.”

“I’m afraid so,” Luke said.

“Good luck with that,” Leia muttered, and headed for the door. Han gave Jaina a meek, apologetic smile, then followed his wife out into the corridor.

In the silence, Jaina glared at Luke.

“Uh,” Jag said, shifting toward the door, “I should probably go prepare the ship. Or something.”

“Actually,” Luke said, “you’re going to want to stay for this.”

Jaina raised a brow. “Oh?”

Motioning Jag to join him, Luke strode into the room. He indicated the bed. “Have a seat, Jaina.”

She frowned, but obeyed. Bracing with her hands, she hopped up and sat on the edge of the bed, her legs dangling down toward the floor.

Luke withdrew something from a pouch on his belt, and offered it to her in his open palm. It was a small holoprojector.

Jaina took it, gazing down at it. “I take it I’m supposed to watch this.”

“No,” Luke said, “it’s just a distraction while I mindrub you.”

“Very funny.” Jaina looked up to Jag. He came to her side and leaned against the bed. She looked into his eyes, and he nodded. She set the holoprojector on the bed between them.

“All right, then,” she said quietly. “Let’s do this.”

Jaina activated the device, and a hand-sized holographic image of Zekk rose over it.

“Hi, Jaina,” his flickering blue form said. “If you’re watching this, that means you’re still alive. And that makes me very happy. The reason you’re watching this is, I’m still alive, too.”

Jaina shot Luke an accusatory glare. He shrugged, and pointed toward the hologram.

“I’m sorry it had to be like this,” Zekk continued, “but it was the only way. Everyone had to believe I was missing. The scans, the searches, the probes into the Mists. All of that was necessary to confirm my disappearance. To validate my status as killed in action. For all the galaxy, it had to appear that the Jedi Knight Zekk was truly gone forever.”

Jaina glanced to Jag. He was as surprised, and confused, as she was.

“I’ve gone undercover, Jaina. New look, new identity.” He chuckled. “I’ll even cut my hair.”

Jag laughed. “I’d like to see that.”

“Shh,” Jaina admonished.

“If you see me on the street, you won’t recognize me.” Zekk tried to grin. “That’s right, Jaina. Not even you. But of course there’s only one way to really hide from Jedi.” Zekk paused. “It’s true. Luke taught me how to conceal myself in the Force. In fact, I expect I’ll be using it quite a bit now. No one can know I’m a Jedi. It would compromise my mission.”

Jaina raised a brow.

“No,” Zekk said. He had anticipated her, of course. “I’m not going to tell you what it is. Luke won’t either. You can only know that I’m alive and well, and undercover. By the time you see this, no one will know how to contact me. Not even your uncle.” Zekk took a long breath. “But I will always know how to contact you. And someday, when this mission is over, I will. We’ll see each other again, Jaina. I promise.”

She reached up a hand and wiped the wetness from her eyes. When she lowered it, Jag took hold of it in both of his.

“And when I do come back,” Zekk said, eyes narrowing, “you’d better be married to Jag.” He waited just a moment. “Yes, you heard that right. Marry him, Jaina. Hell, if this operation takes as long as I think it might, you’d better have some little Fels running around by the time I show up, too.” He smiled. “Be with him, Jaina. Love him. Let him love you.”

Zekk gazed out of the hologram intensely. “Don’t screw it up this time.”

Now Jaina had to use her other hand. To wipe her tears.

Zekk’s face grew intensely serious. “Luke told me he’d play this for you both, so I expect you’re listening too, Jag. Take good care of her, buddy. But that should be easy. I know how much you love her.” For just a moment, Zekk smiled wistfully. “Maybe there were times I tried to fool myself otherwise, but deep down I always knew the truth of her heart. It was only ever you, Jag.” He paused. “So take care of her, and love her, and don’t ever break her heart.” Then he smirked. “Because if you do, I’ll come back, and I’ll hunt you down, and – well, let’s just say I fight a lot better than Alema Rar.”

Despite themselves, Jaina and Jag both laughed.

Zekk took another long, slow breath. “I’m sorry I couldn’t say goodbye in person. I’m sorry for all the heartache you must have felt these long days until now. If there were any other way, I would have spared you this. I hope you can believe that.”

Even though he couldn’t see her, Jaina nodded.

“And I hope someday you can forgive me.” Then Zekk tipped his head. “So I guess this is it. Goodbye, Jag. Goodbye, Jaina. Until we meet again.” He smiled. “May the Force be with you.”

The small blue hologram sputtered with static, then vanished. Jaina picked up the projector and held it in her free hand. For a long moment she simply looked at it while Jag held her other hand. Finally, when the tears stopped flowing, she offered it to Luke.

He took it. “I’ll have to destroy this.”

“I know.” She tried her best to smile. “Thank you.”

Luke nodded. “I’m sorry too, Jaina. I wish –”

“No,” she said, lifting her hand. “It’s okay. You did what you thought was right.” She took a deep breath. “I forgive him. And I forgive you.”

Luke bowed graciously, then turned and walked quickly from the room. He waved the door shut behind him.

Jaina fell against Jag, wrapping her arms around him, crushing herself to his chest. He held her, running his hand gently up and down her back as she cried. Every once in a while he kissed the top of her head, but mostly he just held her.

Finally she leaned away and sat up again. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve. Then she looked up at Jag. “I don’t care how important the mission is,” she said, drilling her eyes into his, “don’t you ever – ever – pull some crazy stunt like that on me.”

Jag’s mouth curled, and he raised a brow. “But I thought you just forgave Zekk?”

“That’s different.”

“Why?”

She grinned. “Because Zekk’s just a friend. You’re going to be my husband.”

“I see.”

“You heard the man,” she said, motioning toward the empty space on the bed where the holoprojector had rested a few minutes before. “He didn’t really give us a choice.”

Jag grinned. “I suppose not.”

She took his hands in hers. “He’s right, you know. We can’t screw it up this time.”

He squeezed her hands back. “We won’t.”

“Good.” She stretched up and kissed him tenderly on the lips. Then she let go of his hands and slid off the edge of the bed, dropping her feet to the floor. Releasing a deep sigh, she said, “Now I have to go tell my mother that I’m not going to look for Zekk. She’s going to ask why, and I’m going to have to tell her I decided she was right.”

“Indeed.” Jag chuckled, taking her hand as they walked slowly toward the door. “That could set a bad precedent.”

“You’re right. Let’s go for a fly.”

Now I've got to go and read it...I'll be back wink

Okay I'm back...

Oh I really liked that speculation...and yep it really does make sense. thinking Emmm...I wonder where Zekk will turn up. You know I'm really buying into the idea that Draco is related to him. Could Luke have sent him to the Empire to indirectly help Jag?

Well, anyway, this was really great. applause applause

And by the way, congrats on the noms... applause

Nice little vig, Lex. I my first thought after finishing Invincible...that he'd either gone off or had been ordered off by Luke to sort out his little dark lapse on the asteroid. Not that it was much of one. And he did tell Jaina because she'd have either followed him or raised almighty hell about him going.

Sort of like a "I need to get myself together alone" kind of thing.

But I'll be honest, Jedi Shadow Zekk is way cooler. cowboy

Awesome little idea. Zekk's disappearance is just strange enough that all of my theories seem a little off. I mean, I can see him going off to Dagoba or someplace for some soul-cleansing, but Zekk doesn't seem the dramatic type to make a whole production of vanishing in the force and letting everyone thing he's dead. This actually makes a lot of sense.

Jaina and Jag's reactions were great. Especially the part about not wanting to admit to Leia that she's right!

Now I want the fic where Zekk comes back from being under cover to play uncle to a bunch of little Fels!
