Title: Coyote Squadron
Author: JEDIGUNSHIP
Timeframe: 15 years after ROtJ
Characters: Coyote Squadron
Author's Notes: None
Summary: They are bold. Everyone looks out for one another. Enemies fear their name... They are Coyote Squadron. No enemy is safe when the Coyotes go to work.
0800. Coruscant. Coyote Squadron HQ
A Y-Wing fighter cut through the morning air, reflections dancing off its hull. It was a nice morning to take a test flight on Coruscant; the conditions were great, and there was little wind to have to worry about. All in all, it was a nice day to go flying. The pilot inside the Y-Wing watched as he flew past building after building, making sure to dodge the skybridges on the way. His comlink buzzed, and the pilot said "It looks good, sir."
"All right, Pump; bring her in."
"Will do, Matt," said Pump Winchy as he turned his fighter around and headed back to HQ.
When he landed, Pump got out of the cockpit of his fighter and headed towards the HQ building. As he approached, he could see a few of the Coyote Squadron pilots chatting; only Pump had wanted to take a test flight so far that day. When he reached the durasteel door, Matt Calhoun, Coyote Squadron Leader, and Dan Boytch came out to join him in the morning sun. "Hey, that looked like a pretty damn good flight," said Dan, his blond hair rustling softly in the cool breeze.
"It felt good to be up there," replied Pump as he took off his flying gloves. "The view up there is spectacular. Maybe you should take a spin right now."
"Nah, I'll take a test flight later," said Dan, who was now mussing up his hair with his hands.
"So, any action yet?" asked Pump excitedly; it had been a month since their last action. Of course, most of it was training. Coyote Squadron was very new, and its members were still trying to get to know each other. A great deal of friendship was needed in every squadron, because it allowed its members to know how everyone fought and also quickened response times. When somene was in trouble, another pilot could come and help them out. The Coyotes had only been together for two months, but they were already good friends. Now all they needed was action.
"Nope," said Matt disgustedly. "There just hasn't been a call for us since that last training exercise on Tatooine."
"It make me wonder if those people even know if we exist," Dan said as he spat onto the concrete. "We're ready to go."
"Maybe we aren't meant to go do anything major yet," offered Pump.
"Well, then they could just say that we're not ready."
"Don't let it get to you," said Matt calmly, his face no longer filled with frustration. "We just wait until they think we are ready, that's all."
"Judging by what they seem to think currently, that day will never come," said Dan while he continued messing up his hair. Its blond color reflected the gleams of sunlight that bathed them in warmth during a decent-weather morning.
"We just have to have patience, Dan." said Matt. "Pump, do you think that we're ready for major action?"
Pump rubbed his chin, thinking about what Matt had just said. "Well, I guess we could be...but that's just my opinion."
Dan opened his mouth to speak, but suddenly Matt's comlink buzzed. Picking it up, he said "Calhoun here."
Over the comlink, Pump could tell that it was from the HQ secretary. "Yeah...Okay...we'll be right there."
"What was that all about?" asked Dan, curious about the page.
"We have a job, boys," Matt said confidently, stowing the comlink into his pocket. "There's a battleship group gathered near the Yavin system. They have been terrorizing local systems, and are now attempting to invade Yavin 4. Ops has assigned us to take these ships out and prevent the invasion from occuring."
"Are you sure that we're ready?" asked Pump, excited and nervous about the upcoming major mission.
"There's only one way to find out," replied Matt as he adressed the other pilots of Coyote Squadron. They quickly scrambled to gather their flight gear. Droids on the landing strip began fueling the starfighters, while engineers made last-minute inspections to every craft. Pump was ready to go fight the invaders, but he had a nagging feeling; he wasn't sure that they were ready yet for something so important. It was too much of a burden for such a new squadron to carry.
"Pump, get to your fighter!" yelled Dan as he raced to his X-Wing. Pump snapped out of his thoughts and hurried over to his Y-Wing fighter. A fueling droid was just finishing filling up the gas tank, so Pump disconnected the hose and climbed the ladder to his cockpit. As he looked around, he could see the others running to their respective starfighters. "Here we go," thought Pump as he started his engines. The roar of his nacelles cut into the morning air sharply, causing birds nested below the scatter in all directions. Pump's comlink buzzed; it was Matt.
"Coyote Squadron, prepare for takeoff. This is it, everyone!"
A minute later, Coyote Squadron took off into the Coruscant sky, entering into the crowded air lanes and nearing the edge of the planet. Pump was sure that many people in the vehicles below watched them in awe, wondering what they were doing and where they were going. Pump smiled; someday, Coyote Squadron would be a household name; everyone would know that they existed. As they left the atmosphere, the Coyotes calculated the hyperspace route to the Yavin system before shooting off in sharp blurs of light. The stars seemed to elongate themselves forever as each ship burst into the realm of hyperspace.

1100. Yavin System.
As the never-ending streaks of hyperspace receeded, the pilots of Coyote Squadron realized that they had come into the Yavin system. Out of their front viewports was the gas giant of Yavin, its red color an oddity in this part of the galaxy. On the far side of the gas giant lay the moon of Yavin 4, the planet used 25 years earlier by the Rebel Alliance in its fight for freedom. There was tension in the air for the Coyotes; this was their first real mission as a squadron. The comlink buzzed in every ship; it was Matt.
"All right, everyone. This is it."
"I can't see the enemy," complained Pump, frustratedly trying to see enemy battleships.
"Nothing on scanners...wait, there they are," said Stock Packster, an E-Wing pilot. "From the looks of it, there are several battleships. They could be holding a lot of fighters."
"I still don't see them," said Pump.
"Mark 0-5, section 34," replied Stock. "You see them yet?"
Pump kept looking out his cockpit viewports. He could see nothing ahead of him; wherever the enemy was, their ships must have blended in with the inky blackness of space. Using his scanners, he was able to pick up a signal and follow it to the correct coordinates. "All right, I see them," said Pump.
"All wings report in," said Matt.
"Coyote 2 standing by," said Dan.
"Coyote 12 standing by," said Turk Manaway.
"Coyote 3 standing by"
"Coyote 8 standing by"
"Coyote 11 standing by," said Pump. He was excited; a real mission.
"Coyote 10 standing by"
After all of the wings had reported in, Matt said "We can take them. Just use the skills that you have learned. Lock x-foils in attack position."
All of the pilots in X and B-Wings pressed the button to move their foils into the battle position. The wings on the X-Wings separated, showing the trademark X shape in the back; meanwhile, the two B-Wings had small flaps emerge from the back of the fighter's body.
"I think they know we're here," said Stock as he continued scanning for enemy targets.
"We're still out of their range..." started Cal Mirras, the X-Wing pilot known as Coyote 6.
"Wait, I'm picking up more readings. Enemy fighters coming at mark 225.," snapped Stock.
Sure enough, several squadrons of fighters had just emerged from the battleships, and were now screaming towards Coyote Squadron. From the looks of it, they were mixed ships; mostly TIE fighters, with some TIE Interceptors mixed in. "Here they come," breathed Pump as he manuevered his ship to counter the oncoming fighters.

The wave of enemy fighters collided with the members of Coyote Squadron, and the air was quickly filled with laser fire. Pump fired off a couple shots, making a small explosion out of a TIE. However, a pair of TIE's had flanked him, and were now firing at his engines. "They're all over me!" he shouted, looking back at the enemies.
"I'll be right there," replied Dan. His X-Wing came flying through the mess and blasted both fighters.
"Thanks, man," said Pump as he started firing on more ships. Although his fighter was designed for heavy bomb loads, Pump was utilizing his laser cannons effectively, wiping out any fighter that opposed him. Up ahead, Turk was closely pursuing a TIE Interceptor. His shots were coming close to the enemy, but he couldn't quite hit a soft spot.
"Almost there..." he grunted as he released the trigger again. This time, the shots rang true, and the Interceptor blew up in a dazzling display of gas and twisted metal. "I got 'em!" he shouted, pumping his fist triumphantly.
Stock, clear of enemy fighters at the moment, looked at the battleships; they were approaching the scene, obviously charging their turbolasers for an all-out assault on the Coyotes. "Careful," he warned, "battleships approaching at Mark 319. Watch out for their blasts." At that moment, a TIE impishly fired upon him. With ease, Stock flanked the fighter and blasted it to smithereens.
By now, the battleships had began firing; long blasts from their turbolaers shot sharply through the chaos. One shot almost hit Turk, but he had executed a barrel roll just in time. From the side of his cockpit, he spoted another TIE bearing in on his position. He yanked the control yoke around, sending his fighter hurtling in an amazing aerial manuever. The TIE bought the fake and slammed headlong into another TIE; both exploded in a brilliant display of light. "Ah ha!" shouted Turk, excited that his ploy had worked.
"Guys, we have more company!" snapped Stock. His scanners had detected more ship readings; obviously, fresh squadrons were being sent out to reinforce the enemy. "Grrr," said Stock through gritted teath, "now there are more fighters. Keep an eye out."

"Damn," thought Pump as he swiveled his ship around. There, right as Stock had said, fresh squadrons had departed from the battleships and ha entered the fray. Eyeing a group of three fighters in close formation, Pump announced "I'm going after three bogeys at Mark 187."
"Copy that, Coyote 11," said Cal, "I'll cover you."
Pump's fighter settled in behind the three TIE's. Obviously, the leader noticed these movements, so the thre enemies started to speed up. Tailing closely behind until then, Pump realized that they could be leading him into a trap. Looking around the battlefield, he could see a sequence of shots coming from a nearby battleship; if he had followed, they would have tracked his movements, honed in on his fighter and blown him up. Cal settled his fighter next to Pump's as the latter fired a proton torpedo at the group of TIE's. Unexpectedly, two more enemies flew right by the group of three, causing a massive explosion that consumed the five fighters. "Yeaaa!" yelled Pump in triumph, excited that he had racked up five kills with one shot.
"I'll call that lucky," said Cal as he manuevered his fighter to trail another TIE. Suddenly, laser fire hit the back of Pump's Y-Wing; another TIE had locked onto him and was now firing across his fighter's body. Raising his shields, Pump realized that he could take one or two more hits. However, before he could fire a shot, a laser blast hit his ship, causing the craft to lurch and then sputter. "I've lost my starboard engine!" shouted Pump, sweat running down his face. "Mayday, mayday, this is Coyote 11. My starboard engine has just been hit, and now I am on only one."
"Return to base," replied Coyote Leader, "there's nothing you can do here with only one functional engine. Return to hyperspace and go back to HQ for repairs."
"Sorry," apologized Pump as he calculated the jump to lightspeed. Two TIE's sped away from the main fray, attempting to capitalize on Pump's delay for hyperspace coordinates. "Coyote 11, you have two bogeys on your tail!" said Silly Grumman, known as Coyote 10.
"I can't shake them!" shouted Pump, furiously watching his hyperdrive computer. "Almost there, almost there..."
The two TIE's continued approaching, opening fire on the floating Y-Wing. One more hit, and pump would erupt in a ball of fire. Pump looked out of his cockpit, eyeing the two fighters that were zooming in on his position. One of the TIE's opened fire; Pump yelled, and his Y-Wing was gone.
