No, I wasn't implying anything romantic between them. It will be clear what I meant soon.

It pleases. And that I was frightened... It is interesting, that you for them there have thought up. I hope, Luke will not be the second the Head of the state.

It's difficult to say how Jaina would react to that.

Yes, probably you are right.

Yep, according to Formbi, she may be the Fel's Shadow Child, as he's never heard of her.

Means, it really Jag's sister?

Ben is an interesting guess We'll be seeing him soon. And more Jag as well.

thinking

Thanks so much. There will be more on Tuesday.

Tuesday? It is a pity, that today even Monday... cry

Thanks for reading and replying too

To you thanks. That you write!

damienraw: Just read chap 3, I imagine if someone as much of a dufus as daala was in charge of the GA then luke would be butting heads with her, I still cant believe she got that position, I mean she is one of the worst military commanders Ive read about in star wars then she suddenly is head of the galactic alliance,

Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more. I was apprehensive about writing this precisely because of that and how "believable" I can really make it. It's so off the wall.

I never liked Borsk Feyla but at least he was a character you loved to hate, it makes as much sense for squibs to be put in charge next time, they'd be selling coruscant to the empire in no time, sorry rant over

Well, I can't agree there. I would love to see the Squibs in charge of the GFFA not_talking

I loved Borsk though. He was the perfect politician tongue

I love the awkwardness between jag and jaina, its realistic,

Thank you. I really enjoy writing those kind of scenes for some reason.

I doubt jaina needs to help zekk
my top candidates would be
Luke - pretty messed up without mara, though he seemed to be turning a corner in legacy of the force at the end, but maybe that dark path has continued to taint him

I think Luke is a really interesting choice with a lot of possibilities, especially given the whole "blazing sun" eyes and "Mine!" thing in Invincible. Arguably the coolest thing about that book.

will we see leia and han soon and allana???

Soon, but not as soon as Tahiri, Ben, Luke, and some others, I don't think. I'm still fiddling with the structure a bit though. I like following Jaina a lot in the beginning as we can catch up with the galaxy through her eyes.

Anakin (:-))- if it is him their needs to be a solid reason reason for his absence, maybe he enlisted zekks help to combat some secret threat (begins praying to star wars gods)

Yeah, this is my favorite one, but as you point out, probably the most difficult. Trying to make it believable after Anakin's been gone for so long would be a challenge.

Tahiri, after all that sith nonsense jacen got out of her she could still be on a confused path afterwards

Jacen said specifically to Jaina that she needed to save "him" so Tahiri would be a long shot, unless you think things are not as they seem with Jacen's message in the cave?

ben - unless something we dont know about has happened he seemd a pretty level headed skywalker for his age so he is bottom of my list, I cant wait to see whats he like now

I thought Ben was a mess throughout the LotF and have been extremely disappointed in him. He ended up in a pretty good spot though, you're right.

post soon!

I'm shooting for tomorrow.

Thanks again for reading and replying grin

No, he will not be. Those of you who guessed there was a lot of friction between Luke and Daala are correct.

Means, it really Jag's sister?

That remains to be seen. All we know is that Cem is a girl and according to Wyn she likes to fly the family yacht...

Chapter 3: Katunda

From the panoramic curve of transparisteel that made up the back wall of the Executive Office, Galactic Alliance Chief of State Daala stared out at Coruscant's Senate District through a ghost of her own reflection. The arcing skytowers were glistening in the mid-afternoon sunlight amidst the endless durasteel glades of needle-topped spires, coned buildings, and ferrocrete ziggurats, all wreathed around the colossal dome that was the Senate Rotunda.

Diagonal braids of starships appeared as metal specks rising and falling from the cascades of white clouds, while the lattices of airspeeders were barely visible as they streamed through the skylanes between edifices, melting into the dull gray superstructures but managing to give the entire cityscape an obnoxious sense of motion.

Daala hated this planet.

She hated almost every person on it.

They were New Republic citizens in her mind still, weak terrorists who rejected the strength and security of an empire for their own frail rendition of "democracy" and then had the gall to act shocked when the Yuuzhan Vong tore their worlds asunder, or betrayed when they hand the entire galaxy to some crazed sorcerer from a cult that's never been held accountable for anything, and he takes them to the brink of destruction.

Looking out at the streams of people traversing the pedwalks and crowding the vistas and plazas, she saw only herds of bloated nerfs who would happily tramp their way to slaughter.

She could still spot the ridge of protestors in front of her building and crowded around the Senate, waving signs and crude effigies of the copper-haired woman. People she was protecting, people she was keeping safe. Perhaps she could move another bill through the Senate to extend the sphere where protesting was not permitted around both structures and push them completely out of her sight.

Some people were just so intimidated by a strong woman in power. She knew that it was the only reason for the constant backlash to her every decree, and to her appointment to the office of Chief of State itself.

For not the first time, Daala wished she'd been successful when she'd tried to destroy the whole thing thirty years ago. When she closed her eye, she could almost see the Star Destroyer crashing into Coruscant's surface and obliterating every inch of the city in a nova-like burst of white light.

She opened her eye.

What day was it?

Everything seemed to be running together. She turned and plucked the datapad from her desk, quickly cycling through the menus to her schedule with a few thumb-clicks.

Katunda.

She hated Katundas.

There was just something about them that seemed to drag in the early part of the week. It was a day that was always bogged down with tedious meetings and wearisome Senate business.

Liegeus had died on a Katunda...

"Chief Daala?"

The aging woman looked up from the glowing screen half surprised to see the spectral form of Dif Scaur seated on the opposite side of her pleekwood desk. His gaunt features and hawk-like nose reminded her so much of Tarkin— it always seemed to throw her off, as if she was slipping out of time.

"What?"

"You were saying something?" Scaur prompted, looking slightly bewildered. "About the List? Then you just... stopped talking?"

"Oh... oh, right."

Daala picked up the datachip the Intelligence Director had placed in the center of her desk and snapped it into the slot at the bottom of her reader. Replacing Belindi Kalenda as the head of GFI had been a necessary action she'd taken early after ascending to this office and assessing the state of the galaxy. Kalenda was a friend to the Jedi, with a long and troubling history of assisting them, and Daala simply wouldn't tolerate someone with such an allegiance with access to the government's greatest secrets.

She needed someone she could trust. And Dif Scaur was that person. It was the Jedi Vergere who had sabotaged his attempt to end the Yuuzhan Vong War with Alpha Red when Scaur was the first Intelligence Director of the Galactic Alliance, and a team of Jedi who would later report its use during the final days of the conflict. He'd earned a healthy distrust of the Jedi Order, and knew that Skywalker's cult's interests were often at odds with the best interests of the galaxy.

Thankfully, Scaur's disgraced exit from the office over the Alpha Red project was not public knowledge, so Daala was able to reappoint him to the position with little fanfare from the weeping masses.

"It looks good," she said, continuing to scroll through the names.

"It's not all that difficult for our slicers to gather," Scaur explained. "But there is a danger in alerting them after we've been in the system, and it simply takes a lot of time to go through all of the information stored in the Temple databanks... it's also not exactly legal..."

"Don't worry about that," Daala replied dismissively. "It will be retroactively. Have you had any luck tracking bloodlines from the Old Republic's records?"

"It's painstaking work. Most of the survivors changed their names during the Purge. We've pieced together a few."

The Chief of State nodded. "Very good."

Scaur paused, shifting uncomfortably in his seat and Daala knew he was going to ask a question he'd been meaning to for some time.

"Chief... You've been asking me to gather these names for months now— when are you actually going to... make use of them?"

A small smile brushed her lips, momentarily disrupting her surly expression, before she turned back to the window overlooking the capital. "What if I told you, Director, that I already am?"

"I'd be relieved," he said after a moment.

"Truly?"

"They're a danger. There's no doubt in my mind."

She smiled again. He wanted her to confide in him, to tell him what it was she'd been up to these past months, but he wasn't ready yet. What she'd created was a very fragile thing and the fewer people who handled it, the less likely it was to break.

She trusted him— but she didn't trust him that much.

Yet.

The former Imperial Admiral was saved explaining to the intelligence director that he didn't need to know when the built-in comm on her desk fizzled with static and the voice of her Cerean secretary came through the speaker.

"Your Excellency, Senator Rive is here for your fourteen-hundred appointment."

"Good," Daala said without thanks. "Send him in."

"As you wish," he replied, before the comm went silent.

"I'm afraid we'll have to continue this another time, Director."

"I look forward to it," Scaur said, rising from his seat with a slightly amused look of acceptance on his frail features.

"In the meantime, I want you to continue your work. I want more lists."

"I have every person I can spare working diligently, Your Eminence."

Scaur bowed as low as his body would allow before turning and leaving, the office's door whooshing shut behind him. No more than a few seconds passed before the dark panel hissed open again, and a far more interesting creature stalked across the expanse of plush burgundy carpets that lined the path to Daala's desk.

The spindly insectoid stood two-meters tall, with lanky triple-jointed limbs and a predator's grace— his movements seemed to whisper murder as much as the three razor-sharp claws that capped his long hands.

There was nothing quite like the sight of a Blood Carver.

Though, strictly speaking, Vak Rive was not a pure one. The Senator from New Batorine was a hybrid, one of the many who inhabited the new home the Blood Carvers were fortunate enough to get before the Empire took control, and doubly so to have been ignored by the Yuuzhan Vong. Their species had almost been completely wiped out by the Lontars hundreds of years earlier, and the Blood Carvers were near the brink of extinction for centuries afterwards.

When finally given a home of their own again, the creatures did what all insects seemed to do well and multiplied. Their flourishing numbers had led to several new breeds of Blood Carver, like Senator Rive.

Unlike the typical golden-orange Carvers, Rive's chitinous exoskeleton was as black as carbon, and parts seemed to glisten like slick viscera beneath the office's overhead glowpanels. He had the same insectoid spikes hanging down from the back of his skull to protect a surprisingly delicate neck, but Rive also possessed an extra set of limbs that folded out from the back of his waist.

"Good afternoon, Your Excellency," the Blood Carver greeted in his thin, reedy voice.

"Senator Rive," Daala nodded. "You may sit."

"I just saw Kyp Durron on the HoloNet," he said, sitting down with the eerie bend of his double knees. "Decrying the dissolution of the Jedi Council."

"Hardly dissolution," she replied, taking the seat from across the creature. "They can still meet in their Temple in any form they'd like. There's simply no reason for us to officially recognize the body. When their council reaches an agreement they can send an emissary here. I don't need to hear from twelve of them."

"They haven't lost anything really, and already they are trying to stir the masses into a frenzy."

"Nothing new. They seem to live to tear governments apart."

Daala was getting a headache just thinking about it, her hand straying to the spot where a piece of shrapnel had buried itself in her skull more than forty years ago. The wound had caused a slight neurological injury, primarily to her medial temporal lobe, causing the then-Admiral to lose some of her recent memories. There had been no permanent damage, of course...

She adjusted her eyepatch and focused on her guest again, doing her best to ignore the splitting pain. "The Jedi are a menace."

"Indeed."

"I have another list," she said, indicating the datapad beside her.

"That is pleasant news. My colleagues will be especially pleased."

For the past five months, Daala had ordered Director Scaur to collect the names of every Force-sensitive in the galaxy, slicing into the Jedi Temple's databanks for records on every being they had come across with an affinity for the Force and their known family members, as well as combing through what remained of the Old Republic's records to locate families that had survived the purge with traces of Force-sensitivity.

It was the starting point. Daala couldn't afford to move against the Jedi themselves, not while Skywalker still held so much support amongst the citizens of the Galactic Alliance and the Senate. But she knew it was only a matter of time before the power-crazed sectarians fostered another conflict, or destroyed planets, or another one of his protégés just tried to take the entire thing over.

And then Daala would make her move.

Legally.

Senator Rive steepled his clawed fingers. "They're going to accuse you of being another Palpatine when this all comes out, you know."

"I'm no monster," Daala scoffed. "No one is talking about extermination, I simply want the Jedi registered and regulated. We do it for blasters here on Coruscant— hell, we do it for speeders. Certainly a single Jedi Knight is more dangerous than any blaster you can find on the market, and capable of more carnage than the worst airspeeder wreck."

It was a conversation the pair had had dozens of times, as if they were both afraid the other still needed convincing.

"I couldn't agree more," the Blood Carver purred. "The rest of us aren't safe with Force-sensitives running around the galaxy, doing what they please."

"Which is why they all need to be confined to one planet."

And that was where Rive came in.

He was a being she could trust, whose disdain for the Jedi had been obvious to her the first time they met.

The Blood Carver had "close ties" to lobbyists from a conglomerate known as KraytCorp— that is to say that they owned Rive, bought and paid for everything he wanted in order to score favorable contracts from the Senate. Daala wasn't naive— she understood that credits kept the galaxy moving at every level, most definitely at the highest tier of "democracy."

KraytCorp had their claws in everything, from shipping, to trade, to weapons— the company had even cast their net in the market of starship parts. But it was their mining subsidiary, Krayt Metals that was the answer to Daala's Jedi problems. The company owned several uninhabited worlds off the far edges of the Perlemian Trade Route, one of which was supposedly rich in a very rare crystal that could not be detected by any sensors beneath the planet's obsidian crust. KraytCorp was eager to use Jedi as miners on the remote world, putting their skills to more practical, noble use and easing the burden on the tax payer by having Jedi provide for themselves through labor.

The galaxy was kept safe from the Jedi and the Jedi were allowed to live out a peaceful existence in seclusion.

Daala had already created a secret patrol to round up the non-Jedi Force-sensitives on Scaur's lists, ripping them away in the night without arousing suspicion. Those who could be taken alive were handed over to Krayt Metals and put to work in their colony along the Outer Rim. The task force, which she'd code named Knight Hammer after the warship she had failed to destroy the Jedi with on Yavin IV, wouldn't be much good against the Jedi Order itself, but when the time came to enforce the new law against Master Skywalker and his followers, she would have the full support of the Senate and the military behind her.

"The Jedi have allies that will not easily cast them aside," Rive cautioned. "The Hapan Queen and Moff Fel are closely linked to your enemies."

"I know."

Queen Mother Tenel Ka Djo was one of them herself and would no doubt attempt to apply political pressure on Daala when her plan was known, and Jagged Fel was perhaps more abhorrent. A long time friend of the Jedi, Daala had learned that he only attained his position at the head of the Imperial Remnant through Skywalker's strong-arming. The Chiss-raised pilot had none of the experience necessary to lead a government.

Fel also appeared to be another in a long line of Imperial misogynists, having virtually ignored Daala's orders that half of the Moff Council be comprised of females, only appointing three in the two years since the civil war had ended— a clear violation of the cease fire agreement.

There was no doubt that both Fel and Tenel Ka would have to be dealt with at some point.

The Chief of State and Rive discussed the Jedi and the changes to come for a few more minutes, before the Blood Carver thanked her and promised to pass the good news along to his friends at KraytCorp, so that they would be prepared for a fresh shipment of Force-sensitives.

When he left, Daala returned to her station beside the window, sneering out at array of towers and flowing air traffic.

What day was it?

Everything seemed to be running together. She turned and lifted the datapad from her desk.

Katunda.

She hated Katundas.

There was just something about them that seemed to drag in the early part of the week.

Liegeus had died on a Katunda...

When Rive returned to his suite, the Blood Carver removed his Senatorial robes and draped them over the back of the flowcushion couch in his living room, sitting in the synth-leather seat and exhaling with delight as the cushions caressed his bony form.

It had been a good day.

Not wanting to get up, he lifted his lower right arm and a hand-sized metal device floated out of the pocket of his dangling robes and glided into his palm as if by magic. The Blood Carver's thumb clicked against the round object's activator, and a shimmering blue hologram materialized with the form of a pale being whose face was shrouded by the cowl of her black cloak.

"I have good news for Lord Krayt," Rive said.

Krayt, huh? I love the way your mind works, Yobi. The best place to hide is often in place sight. And the best lie is often based in truth, is it not? You've done anohter fantastic job of creating a clear picture not only of Daala's coniving plan and the world Jaina is returning to, but also Daala's fragile state of mind. Well done. applause

thinking From a purely medical standpoint, would her brain injury make her more susceptible to mind suggestion?

Interning the Jedi, eh? Well, I guess there's one in every galaxy. Two, really, in the GFFA.

You took that bit in Revelation and turned it into gold.

Damn... I knew Daala would be up to something, but turning the entire Jedi Order into slave labour isn't exactly what I thought she'd be trying. When will these maniacal political leaders realise that Jedi have a nasty habit of fighting back when someone attacks them.

It will be interesting to see how you fit this into the Legacy comics. The Jedi are still with the Alliance by then, I believe (never read them myself, so I don't know for sure).

Can't wait for more.

This vaguely reminds me of X-men and registering mutants... except with more evil intentions.

"Which is why they all need to be confined to one planet."
Ooh. Now it gets really interesting. My mind is already reeling with the implications.

The galaxy was kept safe from the Jedi and the Jedi were allowed to live out a peaceful existence in seclusion.
Slash go crazy from not being able to help anyone or follow the Force. tongue But we don't talk about that last part. wink

Although with her memory issue, maybe she'll think she got rid of the Jedi already. Heh.
